Every year on Remembrance Sunday Pat Perry had a lifetime’s wish to see her Uncle’s name added to the War Memorial at the Cross, writes John Dixon. Her father had told her about his elder brother, Private Albert James Enoch Parsons, drowning in the river at the ‘the Witheys’ at the Mythe Tewkesbury on the 13th August 1919. He had been home on leave with his wife and young daughter when he went for a swim with some loyal lads. After a while he was seen to be in difficulties and sank. His pals tried to help but without avail. His family always believed his breathing was impaired by his being gassed during the war. Now Pat's wish has come true: Albert’s name was added, along with others, at a ReDedication of the War Memorial and service of Thanksgiving for Armed Forces Day. A lovely

‘Manhattan Beach’ by Jennifer Egan Paperback, £8.99 This is a great book and I shall endeavour to tempt readers of this review to choose this excellent novel as a summer time read. The story is all about Anna who we first meet as a girl of nearly 12 when she accompanies her father Eddie to the home of Dexter Styles. Young Anna goes off with Dexter's daughter, and experiences her first sighting of the sea, which basically becomes her lifetime passion. We learn about Anna, her mother Agnes and her disabled younger sister, Lydia and the hard life they live so soon after the 1930s recession. Eddie tries to provide for his family with on and off employment in the docks and his other ventures that led him to Dexter Styles, a nightclub owner and gangster. Forward on some years, and Anna, now an adult, is working for the war effort in the New York naval dockyards helping to inspect equipment for the US navy. Once she sees divers training she sets her heart on becoming one, and despite facing extreme prejudice as a woman, eventually succeeds. It is her colleagues Rose and Nell, and fellow divers, Bascombe and Marle who become integral parts of the events that mould her life. Anna as an adult has suffered as Eddie disappeared out of his family's life without warning. It is only after Anna and Nell visit a nightclub where she once again meets Dexter Styles that she starts to put together the jigsaw of her father's life. Styles is a success, mar-

ried to a wealthy daughter of a respectable banker. He is known for his gangster connections, which we learn about as the two meet. Styles helps Anna by taking Lydia on an excursion away from her sheltered existence to view the sea. As Anna and Dexter's lives interconnect, we follow their families' individual stories, while Anna herself becomes a diver and despite everything, respected and accepted. The diving all seems very authentic and real and the author's research is self-evident and this provides a great structure against which the plot of the book is set. While Anna slowly uncovers the events behind Eddie's disappearance, we can enjoy the mixture of characters good and bad who filter through these pages. This book offers lots of historical background, naval themes, all merged together with the lives of the two main protagonists, as we dive into a melee of adventure, intrigue and gangster life. VOLUNTEERS HELP BLOOM EFFORTS Volunteers from Kingsbridge Risk Solutions based at Miller Court in Tewkesbury spent the day undertaking some corporate volunteering in Tewkesbury town centre to help out Tewkesbury in Bloom, writes Shelby Powell. More used to being in the office and smartly dressed, the team (pictured) enjoyed a day in the sunshine in t-shirts and shorts armed with paint brushes for a change. The hardworking team set to work renovating the benches at the Town Hall gardens with a lick of paint and the bell shaped bollards which run along the bridge leading to Healings Mill were spruced up with a glossy black finish. Kingsbridge spokesperson James Ledingham commented: “As

we were working we had to convince the passing tourists that this was voluntary work and not mandatory community service! “The running joke of the day was “You’ve missed a bit!” Next month the team are helping out at the Animal Shelter in Cheltenham. From coal merchant to housing in 150 years Town Centres, we feel, are in crisis with one possible solution to provide affordable housing for people who will then spend their money within the Town Centre, writes John Dixon. Stokes and Sanders Courts in Oldbury Road are examples of such housing developments just behind the High Street and built on “brownfield” sites. A generation ago, the back of the Town Centre was a hive of small-scale industries: Stokes Court was the home of Tewkesbury Glass with its substantial office building (B) which provided the nucleus of the housing development (A and C). Sanders Court had been owned by Freddie Raggatt, the feisty boiler maker who threatened to blow up the War Memorial if his son’s name was not added - it was! He probably built the house (white in C) in about 1904 when both courts were conjoined. Like many properties on the east side of the road, it had been a coal merchants’ yard since 1871. From coal merchant to boiler maker to glass and carpentry workshops to housing – adapting a Town Centre for modern needs in 150 years.

Yet, though they had suffered so many defeats, the Germans had not been victorious, Paris was safe and the attacks had petered out. So now was the time for a counter attack – and it started on 8th August 1918 and it gradually pushed the Germans back over the next three months. Many historians today regard this campaign as the most successful in British military history. Yet Tewkesbury still lost sixteen more of its sons, five of them from the 1st Glosters which had been fighting since the beginning of the war in France. This campaign, as with the March German attack, was a series of co-ordinated battles, conducted consecutively all the way along the line by the Allies that gradually forced the German Army to retreat to the point where the

civilian politicians had to step in and halt the bloodshed. The Allies now appointed Marshal Foch as Allied Supreme Commander; he was keen to expel the invader and was further buoyed by the effective build-up of US military power, as well as British reinforcements as victorious troops from Palestine and Italy were gradually returned to this theatre. In addition, reserves which had been – allegedly – held back by Lloyd George were sent to France. The fear created by the German attack in April 1918 had induced the Government to amend the Conscription Act for the fifth time – in order to include men from 17 to 51 (instead of 41). Foch accepted Haig’s proposal to attack for a second time on the Somme: many of

It was a very warm evening for our July meeting, and England was playing in the World Cup, but Pam Slater’s fascinating talk about Pearls kept us enthralled. Who knew that pearls could come in so many shapes and sizes and varying colours? Pam had bought many of her necklaces from Charity shops and was adept at restringing them herself and making her own designs. Her examples proved that you need not splash out on expensive white ones to look stylish. We do not meet in August apart from the outing to Whitley Court then on September 12th Mr Trott will talk about the life of Hubert Parry. Head of Unit Nic Price said “Mark is the “Mock Mayor of Barton” and as part of his daily radio show was visiting all the places that incorporate

the name Barton within the County. He did live commentaries from the boat as they went along the Severn onto the Avon which involved going

through Upper Lode and Avon Locks and this gave us an opportunity to tell listeners about the two rivers and their historical importance to

Tewkesbury as well as all about the role of Severn Unit MVS within the local area and especially with Avon Navigation Trust.”

This easy flat stroll takes in both banks of the Avon, and gives us the chance to see the historic and picturesque twin mills of Fladbury and Cropthorne. Use the public car park at Jubilee Bridge. The bridge spans the Avon to link three neighbouring villages Fladbury, Cropthorne and Charlton. The original bridge was built in 1887 to mark the golden jubilee of Queen Victoria. Before that time the only way to cross the Avon was by means of a water gate near Cropthorne. This was a series of gates and sluices on top of a weir, which could be closed when water was low, and enable the river to be forded. The 1887 bridge was replaced by the present iron arch structure in 1933. Leave the car park and cross the bridge, (1)

and look out for a kissing gate on the right (2). Go through into the meadow, and walk along its edge with the road and a wire fence to your left. At the end of the meadow, bear right and then go over a footbridge on to a small island (3). Ahead of you is a bench where you may admire this lovely setting, and read the information boards which trace the history of the two mills here. Fladbury’s Mill is to the left: in front of you between the weir and the lock is the impressive red brick Cropthorne Mill. Go back over the footbridge, but this time go along the river bank (with the Avon to your left) and follow the path back to the bridge. Here is another information board, beneath which are a few fragments of metal which are all that’s left of one of the original cast iron bridge’s supports. Go through the gate (2), and back over the bridge. Turn left up the lane which runs between car park and the Avon. Look for the yellow waymarker arrow on the left (4). Follow the direction through the gate and down to the river. Bear right and follow the river bank until you reach the end of the meadow. Cross a footbridge (5) and bear left over a stile to reach the lock behind

UK’S FIRST EVER NATIONAL PLUM DAY The UK's first-ever official National Plum Day will take place in Pershore on Saturday 11th August, with the aim of restoring plums to the top of the British fruit charts.

plums - the Pershore Purple and the Pershore Yellow Egg Plum. For the Heart of England in Bloom regional competition last month, the weather turned out to be just perfect in Tewkesbury, writes Shelby Powell. Judges Mark and Paul enjoyed a two hour tour of the town and it was their job to assess if volunteers have reached the necessary horticultural standard for an award this year. The judges enjoyed viewing the new sensory garden at Marina Court, there was a stop off at the Village Green at Twixtbears before heading down to the Little Park by the Lock. The judges admired the railing planters along the riverside walk before meeting local school children who had planted up wheelbarrows especially for the occasion. A quick mini bus ride took the judges to the grounds of the Abbey and then it was a short walk to Victoria Gardens where the stunning flowerbeds are planted up by volunteers. The judges were able to enjoy a bird's eye view of Tewkesbury Nature Reserve and The Ham with a short helicopter ride sponsored by Tewkesbury Rotary Club. The big competition, the UK Nationals, is on Wednesday 1st August when the volunteers will have to pull out all the stops and being the only entry from Gloucestershire, the pressure is on for Tewkesbury to do well. The National Awards ceremony is being held in Belfast in October and the Borough Mayor has kindly agreed to collect the town's award. In addition, Victoria Gardens has been nominated for a special award.

PAIN ADAPTATION with Katie Hogg, Two Rivers Osteopathy The human body is very clever at adapting to pain and often after a few weeks of discomfort pain levels can drop. Sometimes this can men the injury has healed, sometimes this can mean the body has adapted and compensated. A very clever mechanism. Sadly, after many compensations the body can adapt no more and the result is long term discomfort or permanent damage. It is important to be body aware. Be aware of how you more normally and if this alters after an injury. Symmetry is what our musculoskeletal system is aiming for. So, when you are next walking to the post office, walking the dog, sitting at your desk, driving the car…..think about how you are standing/sitting/ moving. Is you weight evenly distributed? Are you shifting to one side or the other? Are you able to stand still? Do you need to keep fidgeting? These are all important questions to establish what is normal for you and what is abnormal. Asymmetry needs looking at. This could be your osteopath, personal trainer or a member of your family just analysing you. Be nice though! PROBUS CLUB VISIT TO THE MORGAN MOTOR COMPANY As part of a varied range of outside activities, members of Longdon District Probus Club recently paid a visit to the Morgan Motor Company, at Malvern. It was a real eye-opener, even if it wasn’t a first visit for some. The factory is located a little off the ‘beaten track’ near Victoria Park, and Club members met in the visitor’s café for refreshment prior to the guided tour. A fascinating video was shown prior to the tour proper, this video describing the history of Morgan cars from the beginning (in 1909) up to the present day. Our guide for the tour then ‘steered’ the Probus group through the factory, pointing out all of the salient features of the production process. It’s difficult to comprehend how successfully all the components and sub-assemblies come together to form a Morgan car, but they obviously do. It was good to note how many of these items are sourced from within the UK. Many skills such as panel beating, carpentry and leather work, are needed to make a Morgan car, and it is obvious that all the Company employees can be, and are, justifiably proud of the end prod-

uct. Included in the tour was a visit to the museum, where many classic Morgan cars were on display. The photograph shows members of Probus admiring, with their guide, a classic Morgan car.

Our local metal detector enthusiast, Stuart Borley, regularly submits his finds to this magazine to share these discoveries with readers. It is important that unearthed finds are not cleaned with anything other than soapy water and a brush, as valuable detail and provenance can be lost. However, there are many finds that are clearly identifiable, as modern or of low value and there is no reason why these items cannot be cleaned to make them more interesting to view. Stuart gave us four items and we used different cleaning techniques to bring the artifacts back to life.

The first item is a Brass butterfly brooch, probably from the 1920’s, the item was soaked in Phosphoric acid (a chemical used widely in the food industry and found in Cola drinks) which removed the verdigris and then it was scrubbed with a brass wire brush to make it shine. The same process was used on the brass and enamel badge shown in the photograph. After cleaning it is clear that it is a first world war campaign badge commemorating

the battle of Arras, France. A brass coat button came to life after an acid dip and a polish on a burnishing wheel. The final item ,a wrought iron hand made nail was cleaned in a grit blasting cabinet and burnished on a rotary wire wheel. Readers may agree that the restored look makes the items more interesting and we may carry out more before and after restorations in future issues.

Sunday 19 August 2018 will see The Rotary Club of Tewkesbury stage their annual Classic Vehicle Festival on the 54-acre site at Tewkesbury School Playing Fields. Over 1000 classic vehicles will be represented, from the dawn of the motoring era, to pre-war, post-war, American, sports cars to custom cars and hot rods, plus over 200 classic motorcycles. The event, now in its 8th year is the Rotary Clubs’ biggest charity annual fundraiser which actively raises thousands of pounds for both national and regional charities. Over £100,000 has been donated since its inception. The Festival features live vintage entertainment courtesy of the

On Monday 9th July, a trip to The Houses of Parliament for 48 members and guests, was arranged by Mary Yerburgh, President of Kemerton WI. What an enjoyable and momentous day it turned out to be! The previous day The Brexit Secretary, David Davies had resigned and while we were in The Palace, Boris Johnson too resigned! We were lucky enough to meet Tewkesbury’s MP, Laurence Robertson, who gave us an insight into his work and answered a number of questions. In the morning we had a tour of Westminster Hall and

learned of the history, when in the 11th Century it was used as a meeting place, evolving to becoming the workplace of a 21st Century Parliament. Today the Westminster Parliament is comprised of three parts; the House of Commons, the House of Lords and the Sovereign. We were fortunate to see all parts and to witness a Bill being taken from The Commons to The

Lords. Some of our members were even able to observe a debate from The Public Gallery, seeing Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn! From the architecture and its decoration; to the paintings, the statues, the furniture, stained glass windows and floor tiles; one cannot help but be moved by the majesty and importance of this wonderful building to our Country.

Local Members of The Royal British Legion to represent Gloucestershire at WW1 Commemorations in Belgium Phillip and Hilary Edge will travel to Europe for The Royal British Legion’s Great Pilgrimage 90 event 5-9th August 2018. Members of Tewkesbury Branch of The Royal British Legion

will join thousands marching in Ypres, Belgium, this August as

part of this year's centenary commemorations to mark the end of the First World War. The Royal British Legion event, known as Great Pilgrimage 90 (GP90), takes place

between the 5th and 9th of August and will be one of the largest in the charity’s history. GP90 will mark 90 years since the original Great Pilgrimage in 1928, which saw 11,000 World

War One veterans and war widows visit the battlefields of the Somme in France and Ypres in Belgium, a decade after the conflict ended. The Great Pilgrimage culminated in a march through Ypres to the Menin Gate, in remembrance of those who never returned. Local Legion members and Scout Leaders, Phillip and Hilary Edge will represent the

Tewkesbury Branch and the local community at the event, as Standard Bearer and wreath layer respectively. Phillip and Hilary will tour some of the battlefields and cemeteries visited by those on the Great Pilgrimage, before marching along the original route through Ypres, to the Menin Gate on the 8th August, bearing their branch standard. continued on P47…

Blessed with a sunny day there was plenty to do and see at this years Ripple Fete, which included the Great Bake Off, Horse and Cart rides, Dog show, miniature traction engine rides, archery, Splat the Rat and a host of other traditional attractions.

Organisers Jon Lewis and Roger Barnfield reported that the event had raised approximately ÂŁ2,000 to be shared between the Charities, Mind, Alzeimers Research and the Air Ambulance. Jon wishes to thank all the volunteers who helped, Jag and Nita for the use of the field and of course, all those who came to the Fete.

At July's meeting we had a wonderful time surrounded by flowers. Jo Hiorns and her mother Christine gave us a demonstration on how to make a lovely hand-tied bouquet - not as easy as it looks! We then all proceeded to complete our own bouquets, 'professionally wrapped' and finished with bows. It has certainly given most of us the confidence to have another go. Many thanks to both Jo and Christine for their help and patience, it was definitely a very enjoyable and informative evening. There will be no meeting in August, but we will be back in September with a talk by Charlotte Phillips entitled 'Plus Sized Model/Pageant Queen'. New members very welcome to come along and join us. Enjoy some fine architecture this bank holiday in Deerhurst The evidence of history is never far away and a visit to the small village of Deerhust this coming Bank Holiday weekend could provide a few surprises. Two fine examples of early English architecture lie within a stones throw of each other, the first is the Anglo Saxon English Heritage Monument, Odda’s Chapel. The Chapel was built by the Anglo Saxon Earl, Odda in 1056, ten years before William the Conqurer invaded and changed the course of English history. Oddly enough the chapel’s location was unknown until 1885 when the Reverend George Butterworth discovered that it had been incorporated into the adjacent and much later 16th Century House, Abbot’s Court. The Second example is the Church of St Mary believed to be one of the finest and most complete buildings in England to survive from before the Norman Conquest. Its architectural history is complex and is still much debated by architectural historians, but a substantial part of the building is now considered to belong to the first half of the 9th century, the period of Æthelric’s bequest. This includes the famous angel in the ruined apse and a series of carved beast-heads, including two at the west end and two on the chancel arch. The font also belongs to the 9th century and a statue of the Virgin and Child (originally painted) near the entrance is likely to be of a similar date. There are many surviving Anglo-Saxon arches, doorways and windows. A particularly notable feature is the high-level chapel in the tower. This is not open to visitors but it has a splendid double-opening with triangular heads

which can be seen from the floor of the nave. The best time to visit these important buildings will be during the Biennial Deerhurst Flower Festival on the 25th, 26th and 27th August. This spectacular event is organised in one of England’s oldest and

most delightful Saxon churches, The Priory Church of St. Mary, nestling by the river Severn in the village of Deerhurst. The historic church will be transformed into a fragrant and colourful art gallery bedecked with vibrant floral displays depicting the theme for 2018, “A Moment in Time.” In addition, to make a day out of it, refreshments are served all day on the Priory Lawns along with a selection of craft stalls, local entertainment, BBQ and bar. Nearby, in Odda’s Chapel local artists will be exhibiting their works, and the Church Tower will be open each afternoon for anyone to try their hand at bell ringing.

Proposed new model of pharmacy inspections All pharmacies are visited by a General Pharmaceutical Council Inspector . and this usually occurs every four years, unless there is an issue or complaint, writes Peter Badham. The Inspector will judge the pharmacy on five core principles; Governance, Staff, Premises, Services, and - finally, Equipment. 85% of pharmacies are rated as satisfactory, and of the balance 14%

resolve any issue identified in the inspection within a few days. There is a process of review, where in future all of these reports will be available on a dedicated website for patients to read.

Classic vehicles from all over the UK head for Prescott, near Gotherington, on the first weekend of August (4th-5th) to take part in the Vintage Sports Car Club’s annual hillclimb event. Some 250 pre-war racing and sports cars will take on the challenge of the traditional 880 yard course first established by the VSCC in 1938. Practice will take place on Saturday, with the competition on the Sunday. There will also be the annual gathering of spectator pre-war cars, and international auction house and club sponsors, Bonhams, will also provide an impressive display of exquisite cars from their upcoming sales.
