Not necessarily a happy occasion and this year, it transpires, less so than others. Kate Gleeson is hosting her two brothers and as ever there is one absentee, Kate's twin, Elaine who died twelve years previous. Kate's life has never been the same after her twin, with whom she shared everything, was suddenly taken from her. Kate spends the day preparing for her family even carefully making a Baked Alaska, though as the dinner party unfolds and emotions are revealed, tensions rise, all is far from calm. Kate never serves this dessert, and later she is left alone and bereft. Kate's relationship with her two brothers is good, Peter the elder one who took over running the family farm in Carlow after their father died, and Ray who now lives also in Dublin, with his wife Liz, who also attends the dinner party. The book itself looks back on their early lives, and particularly those of the twins. The brothers' childhoods and careers are woven into their sisters' story and how Elaine died. There is one other crucial character, absent from the Dublin dinner party, their mother, Bernadette, who is a very complex individual, who influences her offsprings' lives in many ways. She has a fiery
temper, so life in the farmhouse was never uneventful. The twins were always very close but their interests were very different, Kate liked music, Elaine had a horse. She was more wayward than Kate who lived a bit in her sister's shadow, but always in the eye of her father. As the book unfolds over the years looking backward to life in Carlow in 1999 and 2006, moving to Kate's University years in Dublin and her somewhat mundane job as a receptionist at the time of the dinner party. Sarah Gilmartin reveals the family's lives and how they find themselves sitting around a table remembering their absent sister. In summation, a good read by a new Irish writer. Looking at life in Ireland over the recent past decades, no mention of the Troubles, just the trials and tribulations within a well characterised farming family. Selected by: Ian B. Tewkesbury Running Club is trying to encourage the next generation of runners and help the local community. The club has set aside £1000 in grants from its limited funds and has reached out to local schools via their members. Schools have been invited to apply for a grant of up to £250 to help fund running equipment for the school, or other interesting uses. To date Tewkesbury Running Club have agreed to three grants. Both Tewkesbury CofE Primary School and John Moore Primary School will be receiving £250 each to fund new vests and other equipment for their cross country teams. The Tewkesbury inter
RUNNING CLUB GRANTS TO LOCAL SCHOOLS -school cross country championship sees Year 4 to 6 children taking part in a series of events each year and is hugely popular and a great gateway into running. The first of these grants was presented to Tewkesbury CofE Primary School last month, during the school's assembly by club members and pupil parents Nick Matthews and Carley Merryman (former pupil). The cheque for John Moore Primary School will be presented at a date to be agreed by club member and pupil parent Jon Mansfield, and club member and grandparent Cameron Pay. The third grant agreed is for Carrant Brook
Junior School and will be presented by club member and teacher Suzanne Tharme. The grant in this case is to help a group of 7 to 11 year-old children who require emotional sup-
port and additional nurturing. The money will be used towards the funding of child led workshops, with a local artist to create willow sculptures for the school. The final grant to of
£250 was presented to Northway Infant School to fund the purchase of balance bikes. This take s the total donated by Tewkesbury Running Club to £1000 for 2022. Tewkesbury Running

East Manor Group choose RED for distribution needs One of Gloucestershire’s leading door and window manufacturers and installers, the East Manor Group, has sealed a deal with Tewkesbury-based RED Transport & Logistics, to look after their trade transport needs. The East Manor Group came into being in 2017, following a management buy-out. It comprises three companies - CDW systems, based in Gloucester, Clearway Doors & Windows of Cheltenham, and Clearway’s specialist division Designex Cabinets Ltd. RED Transport and Logistics has been operating from its base near the M5 Junction 9 at Tewkesbury for over a decade. During that time the business has grown into one of the UK’s leading independent haulage and logistics firms, with a fleet of vehicles ranging from vans to articulated trucks. East Manor’s Jeremy Phillips outlined the new business relationship: “We started using RED to transport and deliver our bespoke Designex display cabinets to our customers - which range from museums to the homes of private collectors. “We were highly impressed by the level of professionalism demonstrated from top to bottom in RED’s organisa-

Dedicated vans were provided for our specially made cabinets, and extreme care was taken in handling them from collection to delivery. “CDW is a trade supplier of aluminium doors and windows nationwide - so the size and scale of items coming out of the factory can vary tremendously. “We asked RED to help us out with a few awkward loads initially and nothing presented a problem to them. “They even offered a storage facility for advance purchased aluminium profile, which enabled us to secure materials at an advantageous price to keep our
prices highly competitive in future. “This Spring we decided to embark on a special relationship with RED, after being looked after so well by Stefan Roberts, Ollie Alonso and their team. “So RED are now fulfilling all CDW and Designex’s transport needs, and undertaking some trade work for Clearway Doors and Windows when needed. It’s nice to keep it local.” The Group continues to see a rise in business. CDW has recently been engaged in major construction projects in the Channel Islands. access is Odda’s Chapel where local artists will be exhibiting and selling their works. It is Lilian Faithfull Care’s first charity shop but it has the character and feel of a boutique. The spacious and airy shop gives customers room to browse; it makes shopping easy for those with pushchairs, wheelchairs or walking aids.

Tirlebrook is 50! Calling students, families and colleagues past and present! Are you, or have you been a member of the Tirlebrook community at some point over the last 50 years? Perhaps you are an ex-student, parent or grandparent, or maybe you have worked at the school. If you are one of these people then we would love to hear from you. Community is at the heart of what we do at Tirlebrook. Since opening our doors in 1971, we have welcomed thousands of children and families, and as part of our birthday celebrations we are looking to record audio stories and collect photographs dating back through the decades to the 1970s. We would love to hear from past students, staff, family and friends, whether you were here two or twenty years ago, and invite you to come and share your stories of our school, however big or small. Our vision is to create an audio recording of your stories to be played alongside a moving photo gallery to form a living history room as part of our Tirlebrook is 50 event on Saturday 1st October from 2pm - 6pm. Due to the pandemic we had to put last year’s
planned celebrations on hold, so we are more determined to make this event one to remember! The respectable, mature (but fun-loving) gentlemen who typify the membership of Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club must have wondered what was in store for them when Kirstie Bingham from the John Moore Museum arrived in the costume of a medieval serving wench to tell us all about swearing, sex and toilets in Tudor times. Kirstie’s talk turned out to be a no-holds barred exposition of things that were never talked about in polite society in those days – or perhaps even in these days. No subject was off limits as she discussed Tudor approaches to sex and how living conditions at the time constrained people’s attitudes to nudity, sex and sleeping arrangements. We learned about women’s “time of the month”, the derivation of some of today’s more hard-core swear words and we had plenty of discussion about toilet arrangements and how the keeper of the Queen’s privy was a much sought-after role as it meant getting very up-close and intimately personal with the monarch. Kirstie’s talk was delivered in a matter of fact but light hearted way and was thoroughly enjoyed by a nearly full house of members. Earlier in the month

tion Trust earlier in the year, our members were now able to visit the Kemerton Lake Nature Reserve where Kate guided us around the lake, pointing out many rare plants, water birds and their young on the lake and proving to us her extensive knowledge of the natural world and in particular the many different species on the Reserve. On the day we visited we were blessed with a beautiful early summer morning for the visit and celebrated afterwards with a pub lunch! A WHALE of a Tale As part of the fight to keep plastic microbes out of our oceans and foodchain an event is being held on Sunday 25th September in Tewkesbury Town Hall and Gardens at which an 18 metre WHALE will be attending to ‘tell his tale’. There will be 6 half hour performances between 11pm - 5pm along with other entertainment. Bold explorers squeeze into the belly of an enormous inflatable Sperm Whale where they find themselves in the depths of the bubbling, kelp-swirling ocean.
Fitting carpets in the homes of Tewkesbury for over 30 years They encounter an acrobatic diver who leads them swimmingly through the age old journey of the life of an ancient Leatherback Turtle. With the use of exquisite puppets, comedy and music, Circo Rum Ba Ba explore the tale of sea creatures and their battle to survive in an ocean full of rubbish. The audience help to save the turtle and the Whale from a deluge of plastic and travel from the Indian ocean to a coral reef, leaving feeling em-
powered that everyone can make a difference. There will be many organisations presents that are working with the environment to reduce the pollution in our rivers and to care for and maintain the natural environment in Tewkesbury for all to enjoy. There will be activities, quizzes, information and stalls, plus a ‘protest’ wall of sea creatures made from recycled Tewkesbury plastic.
Building up to this event there will be opportunities during the school summer holidays for children and young people to get involved in competitions with entries to be
displayed on the day. 1. Draw a poster of sea creatures with an anti-pollution message 2. Paint a poster with an anti-pollution message. 3. Make a sea creature out of recycled plastic. There will be two age groups, 4-7 and 8-11. On Friday 2nd September, 10am - 12.30 and Tuesday, 6th September, 3.30- 5pm there will be workshops at Tewkesbury Library to help with ideas and crafting the sea creatures. Keep an eye out for other related activities at the Library during the summer. Any completed entries can be dropped off at Bookworm, 150 High St., Tewkesbury, entry is free just make sure that the entrant’s name, age and contact details are include on the back. The event is free having been funded and supported locally.

Restoration of Parish Hall windows is complete Work on the windows of Tewkesbury Abbey Parish Hall and offices, built in 1813 as a National School, a Grade II listed building, has now been successfully completed. Alendronic acid, for example, has increa-sed in cost price to our company from 20p a pack to £20 a pack. This is being mirrored across numerous widely used drugs; it is not unique. I have never seen this happen before, with such rises in prices across a long list of medicines. As a company we hold up to six months of stock, in hand but other providers do not. So we can ride the storm to a point. We have already seen a surge of new patients trying to get their medication from us. I hope the supply chain settles down or we could have shortages this winter.

It’s not just those of us that work outside who are painfully aware of the changes happening to our weather patterns, everyone can see it now so hopefully everyone can relate. More informed people than I can discuss how we can play our own part in protecting our planet, but a more tangible focus is our own gardens and locality. Gardens and our knowledge of their plants are still based on traditional norms. Plants emerge or flower at given times of year, leaves drop during ‘autumn’ and it rains in April. Right? Yet every year I comment on something happening that shouldn’t be. I often sound like I’m making excuses as things emerge and flower at the wrong time so carefully planned displays are often a bit wonky or mistimed. Designers or the people that write books or instructions on seed packets haven’t really

caught up with that yet. They can’t because nobody has a clue what weather we’ll be subjected to or how plants will respond. To put it in perspective, the RHS has only recently begun a study into suitable tree species for UK gardens facing a changing climate. I think we also need to be realistic about what sustainability means. For example, extra water storage for summer droughts is an obvious idea, but is that truly sustainable when the required amounts far exceed the amount we’ve stored or the plants we’ve put in require a lot of inputs? On the flip-side, we could use more drought tolerant plants, yet do those plants tolerate our extremely wet winters too? Can we keep using plants that need cold winters to remove pests and disease if mild weather just prolongs their active period? The point I’m making is that we need to be prepared to totally rethink our old notions about what happens to gardens at given times of the year. Just because nobody knows the answers, it doesn’t mean we can’t ponder the questions.
CONSERVATION AND RE-USE IN THE GARDEN As recycling is so important in conserving resources and energy it makes sense to reuse materials, writes committed recycler and repair cafe volunteer Ken Flude Those of us who can remember the rationing and material shortages of past times (similar to those of the pandemic) might be interested in these garden repair projects. The whole of this trellis is made of recycled packaging timber salvaged from pallets. The outside frames were 48mm x 72mm rails and make a two 2m squares mitred to give a facetted effect. The other 2m and 1m facets are made of timbers cut from old floor joists and slats cut from pallet planks and are over twenty years old but protected by the climbers so did not need replacement as the more exposed panels did. Elsewhere in the garden the fence panels needed replacing as they were over twenty five years old. They were made of re-used timber in the first place, so an improved design to prevent water ingress should mean a reasonable life span for them. Likewise the pergola and the oil tank shed are also made of recycled timber from various sources , demolition salvage, old fencing, redundant church organ parts,packaging etc. All of this was destined for landfill and even the residue ended up as firewood with the fixings as scrap via a magnet, 䡵 Ken Flude and the ash on the garden.

The centuries old Tudor House Hotel in Tewkesbury has a new General Manager with the appointment of Joe Bishop, who had a baptism of water and not of fire when he became a trainee manager! For he was working at The Bell in the town at the time, and was cut off for a week during the great flood of 2007. But there was a silver lining in that it was during that, never to be forgotten period, that he met his future wife, Hannah, who later went on to work with him as am hotel receptionist before making nursing her career. “I started working in the hotel and catering industry in the area as a fifteenyear-old pot washer and was so fascinated by
the buzz of it all, that I guess I just never left,” he said. “Now being made General Manager of The Tudor House, following it’s amazing refurbishment by The Coaching Inn Group, is a career dream come true because I have an enthusiastic team and we’ve just opened a new terrace overlooking the river,” he said. PRINKNASH AND COOPERS HILL This month we venture just over the boundary of the Borough of Tewkesbury, to take a walk around the woods and scarpland at Prinknash. Monastic life at Prinknash began in 1928, when the Benedictine Community on Caldey Island, off the coast of Pembrokeshire, found life cut off from the mainland increasingly difficult. Here in the Cotswolds they began to thrive, establishing a wellknown pottery, making and selling incense and building themselves a new abbey, which they moved into in 1972. A bird park in the extensive grounds was a popular tourist attraction for many years too. Gradually, the numbers in the community declined, and the brothers returned to St Peter’s Grange - the old manor house they had first occupied in 1928. Today, Prinknash Abbey and parkland remains a popular destination for visitors. There is a thriving café and shop, and next year a small convent will relocate to take up accommodation in part of the ‘new’ abbey. Our walk begins from the abbey’s large free car park. Descend to the café and shop (where

Pass the private turning on the right (1) which leads towards the workshops where incense is still made. Continue on to reach St Peter’s Grange. (2). The monastic chapel may be visited by passing through a small gateway. Upon leaving the chapel, return to the driveway and look for a small shrine on the right (3). Follow the track upwards to the right of it, to reach a peaceful graveyard(4). Walk through the cemetery to reach a driveway, and bear left, following the way markers upwards. Look for some steps on your right (5) and climb up to reach a track. Bear left to join the Cotswold Way. Upon reaching the A46 (6) cross over with care, and continue along the Cotswold Way. To your right is the Cotswold Commons and Beechwoods National Nature Reserve (7). The Cotswold Way now traces the edge of the scarp through wood-
䡵 St Peter’s Grange and Monastic Chapel land. There are several former quarries along the route. Eventually you will ascend and arrive at the precipitous edge of Cooper’s Hill (8). It is here that the famous - and highly dangerous - annual Cheese Rolling event has taken place for at least five centuries. There is no actual record of when the first races took place. The rules are simple there aren’t any. Other than risking life and limb to chase after a round of Double Gloucester Cheese as it plummets down to the base of the slope some 200 yards away! Originally the event took place at Whitsuntide - although more recently the races have
been held on a Spring Bank Holiday, attracting very large crowds. After you’ve decided not to take part next year, re-trace your steps along the Cotswold Way via Upton Wood, and take the next path on your right (9), descending to the busy A46. Bear left along the road for a short distance, and cross carefully to Prinknash Abbey Park entrance (10).Take the driveway back down to the Car Park. The Abbey Café is open 10am-4pm every day, and serves excellent cakes and light lunches. There is indoor and outdoor seating. Just below the café is the Monastery Garden, which is a perfect spot for quiet contemplation.

How we treat the elderly is still a temporary political concern even after the welcome introduction of Old Age Pensions in 1908 - for 70-year-old men only! writes John Dixon. The photographs of the Spring Gardens Home show the expression of the concerns of the postWar Welfare state. Care of the vulnerable had been the concern of the Medieval Abbeys but after their dissolution the problem probably deteriorated. The concept of the role of the Church of England is providing Alms-houses is seem the Russell buildings near the Abbey and the (modernised) Richardsons in Gander Lane took care of religious adherents - but what about the others? The Spring Gardens complex was built on the
site of the former Barnes Alms-houses which exemplified how charities in the industrial age in the 19th-20th century looked after the elderly when their families could not - or would not. Bennett announced the opening in 1830: of “24 Convenient Dwellings 3 Storeys High; Ö a spacious alms-house in the Oldbury Field, ...dwellings of two rooms each with suitable offices for the benefit of the poor people of the parish. The 8 ... occupied by 8 married couples, the men not less than 60 and the women 50: the first floor by 8 widows or maids not under 50 and
the upper storey by eight widows or maids not under 45. The inmates are subject to proper regulations and are to attend divine service at the parish church twice every Sunday. It is understood that this excellent charity will be suitably endowed by the liberal founder, Samuel Barnes.”
We notice there were still religious concerns! Barnes was a nailer then ironmonger; retired a rich man and left his money in trust for this purpose. ‘William Finch, (blind) aged 74 was awarded 15p (now £6.23) by the Poor Law Authorities in 1832 while in 1911 younger tents paid 3d per week

Tewkesbury Rotary Club will celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2023. “...so what!?”.....”never heard if it?” You may not have heard of our Club but you probably know of two of Tewkesbury’s biggest annual events- the Fireworks display in the Abbey Vineyards and the August Classic Vehicles Festival at Tewkesbury School, both organised by our local Rotary Club. You probably don’t know that these events and others raised funds to enable the Club to donate some £34,000 to 30 charities and other worthy causes in the year to June 2022. Many of these were local good causes but we also supported relief work in Ukraine and, for many years, through Rotary International, raised and donated £ millions to eradicate polio from the world. Sadly Tewkesbury Rotary Club has shrunk significantly during the last three years-- lockdown and anno domini amongst members didn’t helpand, of our two major events, the Classic Vehicle Festival will not happen in 2022, with the Fireworks in jeopardy. Although rising costs and increasingly onerous bureaucracy haven’t helped, the Club has too little manpower to put on
these events....and others like the annual Senior Citizens’ Tea Party at the Watson Hall, and bingo and quiz sessions at local residential homes. Our donations to charities will also reduce dramatically.
Will you help rebuild Tewkesbury’s ‘hidden treasure’? We meet fortnightly for a couple of hours in the evenings, usually over a meal, to discuss Club
matters and socialise. Current members are mostly retired, so younger talent would help, although new faces of and age and gender would be very welcome. Contrary to some beliefs, we are not stuffy and like a good laugh as we try to do our bit for the community. If you’d like to have a chat about joining us- and hopefully reviving our major events in future years, please contact our Secretary, John Halstead (halsts@hotmail.com).

Our July meeting was well attended to hear from Willow Weaver Jane Sherwood. Jane told us of her interest in learning willow weaving on a course at Denman College. She explained how she has also taught herself in many different styles of basket making and willow weaving. Following on from this, many of our members are now booked to visit Jane to learn to make Christmas decorations later in the year. Many thanks to Jane for a very enjoyable evening. Mitton W.I. will be returning to Mitton Manor School from September, when we will be trying Tai Chi with Mark. The October meeting will be a talk by Ian Boskett about the Great Train Robbery. agreement that it was ‘nice to be back’ in the town, judging Hospitality and the overall aesthetic picture of the town after the Pandemic. Within the Hospitality aspect of the judging, both the Royal Hop Pole and the Anchor were critiqued
on external flora, the hanging baskets and plant boxes contributing to the ‘overall picture of progression’ the judges were wishing to see this year. While hoping to
see the beauty that Tewkesbury can provide, the judges were also not looking to see certain aspects that have the potential to ruin the picturesque landscape such as lit-
ter and weeds. Luckily, however, due to the countless hours put in by volunteers of the town, Tewkesbury looked immaculate. All the best for the results in August!

A TNR Trustee is an unpaid voluntary role, working as part of the team which has overall responsibility for the reserve. TNR Trustees are the land-owners and leaseholders for the reserve, set the strategic direction, oversee its management, and ensure effective financial control. As a TNR Trustee you will have a chance to make a substantial impact on conservation, education, and health and wellbeing in the local community. You will be able to develop your strategic decision making skills, and your knowledge of governance and the responsibility of charity status, working alongside a committed team of Trustees. Children at the Little Foxes Playgroup, which is associated with The John Moore Primary School, have been enjoying learning in a new outdoor kitchen. The kitchen gives the children a chance to develop life skills and encourages using the environment to cook up culinary delights like lavender soup and mud cupcakes. It was constructed by Daniel Webb, Chair of Governors at The John Moore Primary School, after timber and materials were donated by house-builder Bloor Homes and Midlandsbased developer Deeley Construction. The materials donated were also used to create a reading den, which will be used by children aged three to four in the preschool. Daniel Webb built both structures off-site and then they were transported free-ofcharge to Little Foxes Playgroup by Tewkesbury-based Robert Express Delivery (RED). He made a further

Since 1919 the CWGC has looked after graves of British and Empire War dead. Many of them are abroad near foreign battlefields. Some, however, lost their lives in the UK and in many c a s e s , their bodies were returned to their home burial grounds.
