Although we proceed with caution, indoor events are now happening again - and one of the highlights this month is the appearance of Craig Charles with his funk and soul show at the Watson Hall (Friday 27th August). Music festivals are able to go ahead too - so over at Eastnor Castle Lakefest will be taking place Thursday 12thSunday 15th August, with Sir Tom Jones topping the bill. Tewkesbury has its very own music festival too, over the Bank Holiday Weekend, featuring Nigel from Dodgy, the Bob Marley Experience and lots of other fun music at The Boathouse. Although Tewkesbury’s famous Medieval Festival couldn’t take place this summer, battle will be commencing in nearby Evesham on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th August. This book has been a best seller in the States, and justifiably so. It covers an unusual angle of American society, as it follows the lives of twin sisters, Stella and Desiree. The book is about colour as both girls, though of African origin are white, and in the case of Stella, she spends her adult life "passing" as white. They grow up in the Louisiana town of Mallard, which by all accounts does not exist on any map, it is a town where the residents have "managed colour," so Desiree's eventual return causes a stir. Their childhood was traumatic, and as teenagers, having been forced lo leave school, despite academic promise, they are sent, by their widowed mother, out to earn their keep. The monotony of their lives propels them to up and leave home, setting off together to New Orleans where they falteringly establish themselves. Stella eventually finding secretarial work, while Desiree continues on more menial tasks. Then one day Stella vanishes, moving with her wealthy boss, who she eventually marries. They end up in Los Angeles where they have a daughter, Kennedy, and live a comfortable life as a white family; Stella never disclosing her background to her husband, or over the years to her daughter. The book opens in 1968 with Desiree returning to Mallard holding the hand of her daughter, Jude, who is black and therefore stands out in this community. She is escaping an abusive marriage. Mother and child settle back into the family home where her own mother Adele still lives and working as a cleaner; her life unchanged by the sudden departure of her daughters, but she welcomes Desiree back in as though no time has passed. Desiree had herself moved onto Washington D.C. where she worked for the judiciary on fingerprint identification, a role she can-
not replicate back in Louisiana, so she finds work in Lou LeBon's Diner. A decade on, Jude, a bright student and an athlete, moves to Los Angeles, on a sports scholarship to study medicine. There, as luck would have it, she is working as a waitress at a smart L.A. party when a woman identical to her mother walks in. It is her aunt, but she is unaware of this and then over the next few years is fixated to discover the truth. The cousins meet and become friends, of a sort, but their different upbringings, and Kennedy's privileged life means that they are never equals. Jude pursues her medical career, self funding her studies with partner Reese; while Kennedy aspires to be an actress, unaware of her mother's past. We follow these families, plus Adele's partner Early Jones, an unusual individual!, through the politically strident years of America as far as 1988. The simple complexities of each of their lives, and how the twins, so close as children, survive apart, make this a very fulfilling read. It is an unusual story told from a particular angle, "passing" something apparently common in the States that maybe we are not so well acquainted with on this side of the Atlantic. A satisfying, interesting read with a myriad of support characters who embellish the main story by a novelist who will be worth looking out for in the future. Selected by: Ian B. Red Devils swoop into Lakefest The world's pre-eminent free-fall display team, The Red Devils, will parachute into Lakefest this month, in what will be one of less than a handful of civilian displays in the UK this year. Festival director Lee Martin said: “It was so important to me to add something a little bit special to this years celebrations, realising just how long everyone has been waiting to come together in the shared experience of live music under the summer sky, and then the stars. “As one of my team is a former paratrooper, we put this plan together, and it's incredibly rewarding to see it realised. “No other free-fall team in the world come in quite as fast or hard, and this is in part due to the fact that every one of the Devils is a serving soldier with Britain's
elite Parachute Regiment: each of them has seen active service, and every one of them will return to active service. “They are the bravest of the brave and their display skill evidences that.” The Red Devils will swoop into the festival at Eastnor Castle on Saturday 14th August. “Due to circumstances out of our control we are sad to announce that Echo & The Bunnymen will not be performing at this years event as they have cancelled their 2021 tour,” Lee added. “We are delighted to welcome Scouting for Girls to fill their Saturday night slot!

Guided walks of Tewkesbury’s Battlefield have returned for the summer. On Sunday 8th August an evening walk will start from the Abbey Lawn Gate (in Gander Lane) at 7pm. Afternoon walks will take place (2pm) on 22nd August and 5th September. The walks, run by the

A fitting tribute to Finn A memorial bench has been installed at the Lower Lode Inn, in memory of young Finn Bayliss from Tewkesbury. Finn, who worked in the kitchen at the Lower Lode, tragically lost his life in a road accident near Highfield Business Park, Deerhurst, earlier this year. Finn’s beautiful memorial bench was kindly made and perfected by Adam and Cara Zikking at AtoZ woodworking, for his loving mum Sharon Saville and her family, dad Mark Bayliss and his family, and many friends - some of whom knew Finn as ‘MC Finno.’ Finn’s father Mark Bayliss said: “I would just like to say a big, big thank you to those who kindly donated for this well loved young man, whose memory will live on. Also to Michelle Breakspear and her daughter Katie Louise who organised the fund raising. “This beautiful bench will be placed at the Lower Lode, and we thank Samantha Snape of the inn for allowing us to do so. “The Lower Lode was Finn’s first place of work and where he enjoyed going, so this will be where family and friends can sit and think of their memories with Finn.” Samantha Snape,

Bumper, Open Day raises over £18,000 to help Wild Animals Dear readers, I’ve managed to get the (almost) final total for our Open Day on Sunday 4th July; £18,027.12. It was an absolutely fantastic day with a brilliant atmosphere, despite a couple of heavy downpours. We had more charity and craft stalls than ever before and the Ukulele Band went down a storm (excuse the pun). We plan to make Open Day even bigger and better next year. Our Fun Dog Show was as popular as ever with lots of varied ca-
nine companions entering into the classes. Best in Show was won by Pippa the Schnauzer (who won 1st in Dog that looks most like it’s owner). A huge thank you goes out all stallholders, charities, staff, volunteers and, of course, the visitors. This money will go a long way for the charity as our numbers continue to increase, taking in 7,159 patients last year and with running costs of over £40,000 a month. Tewkesbury Abbey, opens again The onset of the pandemic affected many in Tewkesbury, with businesses and the community alike having to adapt and find new ways of working to survive. The Abbey has been no exception to this. 2021 was meant to be a huge year, when it was due to celebrate 900 years of its consecration. The Abbey has seen many changes over the years, although maybe not too many pandemics. The Abbey today provides a wide range of worship every day of the year, from quiet morning prayer to huge concerts and carol services, pre-pandemic. Hopefully, these will return in time. The Abbey’s ministry extends far beyond its walls though, and visiting the sick, supporting charities and supporting social projects are all in a day’s work to its teams. However, Tewkesbury Abbey is not well-endowed financially. Contrary to popular belief, there is no government funding beyond Covid relief for the building which is of huge significance to the town. It soon became very clear that the Abbey was going to have to adapt, and quickly, as soon as it was able. This resulted in the ’pop-up’ shop being born. During the easing of restrictions following respective lockdowns, the ‘pop-up’ shop offered a combination of a scaled down Abbey gift shop along with takeaway teas and coffees in the tearoom. Income was
vital at this difficult time and offered a chance for parishioners to venture out and visit their beloved Abbey, whilst enjoying a takeaway coffee or tea at the same time. As soon as restrictions eased, the pop-up shop was able to open
again fully, but differently. It is now open 10am-4pm every day, including weekends, and offers teas, coffees, cold drinks, cakes, rolls and sandwiches, ice cream and seasonal specials, whilst inside seating is offered in the Parish Hall. There are now outside picnic benches, and during the recent sunny weather these were enjoyed by many. The Abbey has once more
enjoyed welcoming visitors from all over the UK, and there are plans for the return of the Abbey shop as it once was. Abbey tours will also hopefully resume in July once restrictions ease further, with plans for garden tours to be added as an addition. Events are slowly returning, in line with Government restrictions. The Abbey is now open daily from 8:45am to 4:30pm with services resumed, but in line with Government and Church of England advice, face coverings must be worn. Live streaming has also been introduced, and during lockdown and whilst Government restrictions severely limited attendees to funerals, the Abbey was able to offer this service to families and loved ones, with its teams having to learn very quickly how best to do this. There are plans to develop live streaming, along with its whole visitor experience. We wish to welcome everyone back to Tewkesbury Abbey and aim to offer a space for everyone to enjoy.

When the pandemic was announced, our Probus Club had built up its membership numbers to a healthy level, with a reputation for interesting and diverse speakers. As Probus is a retirement group, we almost all fell into the ‘shielding’ category, so the virus was an instant turnoff. Instead, we gathered from members: working life stories, reminiscences, original articles, poems, jokes, travelogues, international news, more jokes, with weekly feedback on all of these. The result was a weekly 10-page newsletter, written by members
themselves, and sent by email to all our members to keep strong the Tuesday morning habit of chat, coffee and, most importantly, something to stimulate the mind. Just because people were stuck at home didn’t mean that they had to miss out on the
Tuesday camaraderie. We got hooked on ‘dad jokes’ which became our ‘Groaner Virus’ and there has been a healthy feed of (clean) funny stories and one-liners to savour with our morning coffee (or tea), and then to share with the grandchildren.

Industry returns to former Dowty Seals site The erection of this Moog Factory on the A46 near the M5 junction made me realise I know nothing of the building it was replacing, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society. Why is it called Easter Park? – answers on a post-card to presidentths@gmail.com I was very grateful to local photographer, Alex Nugent, giving me his photos of the building of Dowty Seals, his former place of work - and I am always astounded at meeting so many people who once worked at one of the Dowty Factories. I have now learned that Dowty Seals Ltd. was formed in 1948 to make synthetic rubber seals, an essential of hydraulic equipment and it was then housed in the former railway Provender Store near Ashchurch Station. By 1960, the newspaper was reporting that, because of the “Need for more space, a new factory for Dowty Seals was nearing completion”. Alex remembers working with a thousand people until Dowty’s was taken over twice and the site being sold to Sainsbury’s since when it has lain sadly empty. Let us hope that Moog’s factory lasts for more than the Seals’ forty years. I once visited the Moog Factory to visit a work placement - I was shocked at how pristine a factory could be. Let us look forward to the rebirth at Easter Park. John Dixon

As we were unable to start our meetings, as we had hoped at the Wheat Pieces community all on the 14th July, we decided to have picnic in Victoria Gardens. It was a lovely afternoon, as we gathered around the rose gardens, and each member was given a goodie bag of prosecco, orange juice, cake and chocolate. A perfect afternoon tea. It was wonderful to catch up with people we had not seen for many months. We are hoping to start our meeting in the Wheatpieces Community Hall on the 8th September at 2p.m., when our speaker will be Ian Boskett, talking about the Great Train Robbery. We are now really looking forward to again welcoming members, both old and new to regular meetings, which we will be held at 2p.m. every second Wednesday of the month at the Wheatpieces community hall. RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker
WALKING BY WITCOMBE’S WATERS Residents of Tewkesbury may not venture often to the far-flung corners of the Borough, writes Jack B Walker. Many may not even realise that its boundaries stretch to the edge of the Cotswolds near Gloucester - but that is where we are heading out to for this month’s walk.

Park with care and consideration next to the delightful little Grade 1 listed church of St. Mary in Great Witcombe. Walk back along the lane, passing Church Farm and turn into the lane on the left, then over a rather awkward stile on the right (1) into a field. Walk across the field passing the lovely gardens at the rear of Witcombe Farm, and climb up to cross over a stile at the top of a bank by the livery stables (2). Witcombe Reservoirs were constructed in the 1860s to provide water for the city of Gloucester. They are fed by natural springs in the area. There is a trout fishery here, and the three reservoirs attract a great deal of wildfowl year round. This quiet and peaceful location is popular with birdwatchers, anglers and those seeking a perfect moment’s contemplation. Cross over the dam between two reservoirs, and take the lane to the left of a former waterworks house - which is now somewhat overgrown (3). Follow the lane along
the side of the lake, then upwards keeping the field boundary to your left. There are often cattle in these fields - so leave dogs on leads at all times. As you rise up, following the waymarker arrows, the path passes to the left of Witcombe Roman Villa to reach a gate at the edge Coopers Hill Wood (4). 䡵 Looking towards Witcombe Woods

To visit the villa, don’t enter the wood but turn right, keeping the trees to your left, then go through a kissing gate and along a narrow path past farm buildings (5). Built in the second to third centuries AD, Witcombe Roman Villa was unearthed in 1818 and excavated shortly afterwards. Sadly the plasterwork and beautiful mosaics that were uncovered were largely destroyed by exposure to the elements. Remnants
are now housed in small buildings on the site but are often not open to the public. The ruins are in the stewardship of English Heritage, and more information on the site can be found on the website www.englishheritage.org.uk After visiting the villa, retrace your steps to point (4), go through the gate into the woods, walk on up to meet the Cotswold Way, and turn left along it (6). At certain times of year there are good views from the woods, down across Great Witcombe to Bentham and beyond. After a little over half a mile on the Cotswold Way, turn left
down a bridleway (7) and continue along it as it descends through several fields, to meet a track running up from Witcombe Park to Green Farm (8). Bear right and skirt the edge the buildings at Witcombe Park to meet a lane. Home to the Hicks Beach Family, Witcombe Park is also used as a wedding and corporate venue these days, and has also featured as a film and television location. Free range Gloucester Old Spot pigs also have the run of an arboretum on the estate. Turn left (9) and walk back up the lane to Great Witcombe Church.

Problems with your Dog or Cat’s Skin?
Owners concern of their pet’s skin is one of most common reasons for them to be presented at veterinary clinics and so I thought it would be worth a mention on this month's article. Pets with skin disease can present in many guises: from cats that over-groom, to dogs that chew or lick their feet, recurring cases of sore ears or those pets that keep rubbing their bottoms or face on the floor to name a few. Whilst we do see rare and unusual skin disease cases being brought into the clinic from time to time, by far and away the most common reason for pets being presented are due to problems that are caused by fleas (and other external skin parasites), food allergy and allergies to things in the environment, a condition called Atopy. Very often, it is a combination of factors that tip pets over the “threshold” leading to a pet with a skin problem. Add to this the secondary skin infection that commonly results from it being inflamed and you have the perfect formula to create a pet that just keeps scratching.
Why treat effectively for Fleas? Fleas very commonly cause dogs and cat’s skin to become inflamed and so effective flea control is essential in the treatment and prevention of itchy skin. It is not just the fleas biting the animal that causes irritation but also the allergy a pet develops to the flea saliva that creates the problem. This is known as Flea Allergy Dermatitis. The UK’s top selling flea treatment is based around an active ingredient called Fipronil and it is available in many over the counter and online pharmacies, supermarkets and pet shops. If you don’t know the products I am referring to then look it up. It was revolutionary when it first became available in 1993 but that’s almost 30 years ago and fleas have now developed resistance and it is much less effective. In my opinion it is much better to use prescription only medications, available through vets, as they are the latest pharmaceuticals available and therefore the most effective. There is often very little difference in cost compared to ineffective products.
Food allergy Pets that are scratching very often have a degree of food intolerance which can manifest itself as skin disease. Food allergy is a massively under-diagnosed cause of allergic skin disease. It is common for owners to be reluctant to change their pet’s diet but never-the-less a dietary trial can make a big difference in deciding whether food allergy plays a part in the problem. Food trials last 2-3 months and are normally based around a hydrolysed diet that has been fiddled with to prevent immune recognition by the body. A food trial does require
patience and consistency from owners as even a small lapse in diet can undo all the hard work. It can take time to see the benefit but it is worth it.
Atopy Reactions to environmental allergens can be really frustrating as it can be hard for owners to prevent pets coming into contact with their allergy trigger. The good news is that there are tests available to determine specifically what pets are allergic to. This information enables bespoke treatments to be created to reduce the pets sensitivity and aid in control. Finally, there are some simple and effective steps that owners can implement to help manage atopy. As a practice we have a keen interest in dermatology. On Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th August, reenactors will gather at the town’s river side Crown Meadow. Over 300 soldiers and more than a dozen mounted knights will take part in an event which promises to be bigger than ever before. The actual Battle of Evesham took place on 4th August 1265 - over two hundred years before the Battle of Tewkesbury. At Evesham, Simon de Montfort - the Earl of Leicester and leader of a rebellious band of barons - was defeated by Prince Edward. The whole affair was something of a massacre, with de Montfort’s forces heavily outnumbered by the royalists. The battle re-enactment will take place on Saturday and Sunday, and admission is free. The festival is open from 10.30am-4.30pm both days. On the Saturday, there will be a parade through the town with local schools also taking part. There are living history encampments, a

A groomer can expect hissing and grumbling from some cats that dislike being handled. However there are a minority of cats that are extremely aggressive towards owner and groomer when approached with grooming tools. This aggressive reaction can stem from fear, a bad grooming experience in the past, dislike of being handled, fear of pain from a badly matted coat. Some have hypesthesia where they are super sensitive to being touched. The way forward is a very difficult path for the groomer, and one I find myself treading very carefully whenever presented with the scenario of an aggressive cat. The only definite is that the matts need to go.

On one hand, the cat must not get the upper hand and control the situation, especially when its coat is matted and the job needs to get done safely. On the other hand, too much restraint doesn’t bode well for future positive grooming sessions. Sedating a cat every time it needs to be combed isn’t realistic either- its costly and come with additional risk, especially as they get older. I treat each cat as an individual and will make decisions based on that cat’s anxiety or aggression level, age, health
and the severity of matts. If I feel sedation is the safest for your cat, I will recommend a groomer vet and I will not charge for my visit. Going forward, will help the owner to keep their cat matt free and healthier. – prevention is better than yearly reoccurrences. This is my job, but mostly I care about every cat and their welfare. Chris Pitt and Scott Coleman of Tewkesbury’s Pitman Paint, is restoring a rare Austin J40 pedal car for collector Howard Allen, who lives in Malvern. This is something of an usual commission for Northway-based Pitman Paint, who are more familiar with restoring full sized vehicles. Mr Allen - who is a member of the Austin J40 Pedal Car Club owns several models,
RESTORATION OF RARE J40 PEDAL CAR some of which are extremely rare. “In 1949, Leonard Lord, the chairman of the Austin Car Company set up a factory in Bargoed Wales to provide meaningful occupation to Welsh miners suffering from Pneumoconiosis or other related lung diseases,” Mr Allen explained. “It was a state-of-the
art factory, with resident medical staff and hospital facilities. The men were not expected to do heavy manual work, just light engineering tasks, with offcuts from Cowley and Longbridge shipped over to Bargoed and a production line set up to manufacture these pedal cars. “Between 1950 and 1972 some 32,098 J40’s
were produced and many were shipped overseas; to Australia, New Zealand, America, Canada, Hong Kong and Singapore to name just a few. “Local Authorities used these cars to teach children road sense and many fair ground rides feature 10 or 12 cars fitted to a powered roundabout.

Covid restrictions easing for Landlords! Our experts are always on hand to provide guidance particularly during challenging times, and COVID-19 has undoubtedly led to a stressful time for landlords and their tenants. Solicitor Kamrul Zaman looks at the recent changes to the procedure for evictions. The notice period for evictions has now been reduced. “Many landlords are still confused about the applicable notice periods for their particular situation”, comments Kamrul. “While there are suggestions that notice periods will revert back to pre-COVID arrangements later this year, possibly from 1 October 2021, we are still waiting formal confirmation from the Government about future plans”. So what are the current rules? For an assured shorthold tenancy, a landlord can evict their tenant without reason, provided they serve
a Section 21 notice. Currently four months’ notice must be provided to a tenant before a landlord can proceed to court. This has reduced from six months which was in place during the peak of Covid-19. “Don’t forget there are strict requirements for Landlords to comply with including providing a valid Gas Safety Certificate and protecting any deposits taken as this may negatively impact any future claims at court” comments Kamrul. In other circumstances, it may be possible for a landlord to use a Section 8 Notice and, depending on which ground is being
used, there are different notice periods. For rent arrears, the most common grounds which can be used are grounds 8, 10 and 11 and where the rent arrears stand at less than four months, the landlord is required to give four months’ notice (this will be further reduced to two months from 1 August 2021). Where the rental arrears exceed four months, the landlord is required to provide 4 weeks’ notice. Tewkesbury Family Fundraising Efforts Anna Bisley, her husband Steve and their son William are fundraising for Bristol Childrens Hospital via The Grand Series/The Grand Appeal. Anna and her family received incredible support from The Grand Appeal when her sister Alex passed away at the hospital in 2006, and so they began to fundraise for TGA at any opportunity they could and to date have raised £27,000. ery bike I can add some information about the Severn Vale Cider Co. It was set up at Hill House Farm in Bushley by Captain David Morgan, a veteran of the First World War, in which he lost his brother. As on many farms at the time, cider was produced from their own orchards, largely for the workforce and was considered to be part of their wages, or at least a perk of the job. It was often said that the farms producing the best cider had the best workers, and the hard manual work required some quantity of cider, particularly in the summer months of haymaking and harvest, when each worker could have a gallon or more a day. A farm like Hill House could easily have 10 workmen and boys, and a few female workers as well. Severn Vale Cider Co. not only produced farmhouse ‘scrumpy’ cider, but some of the finest cider and perry around, award winning sparkling stuff, comparable with the best champagne, and bottled in the same way. Four bottles in wired wooden crates were shipped around the country by train from Tewkesbury station. These were often given as prizes for the village fetes and Christmas whist drives. Captain Morgan was a great supporter of all things in Bushley up to his retirement in 1970. His grandson, Philip Neal, presented the Captain Morgan trophy for the ‘unsung hero’ of the cricket club soon after the Captain’s death,
still presented annually, though fewer of us now have personal memories of this great man 50 years on. from Tim Perry, Bushey Tim also has Major David Morgan’s hundred year old, complete set of; The Standard Cyclopeadia of Modern Agriculture, an interesting view of farming methods of the time. Changing careers There is a shortage of professional gardeners in the UK and a surplus of people who have enjoyed gardening during Covid-imposed lockdowns so it’s no surprise that I’ve encountered many people looking to change career. I’m going to try to put you off: Horticulture is not highly valued, reflected in the poor wages and is seen as unskilled, even at the very highest levels. It’s also hard physical work, sometimes repetitive and subject to the whims of employers where you need to juggle their wants against plant’s needs. You’ll be outside in heatwaves and bitter winters, soaked to the skin and covered in mud, cut or stung. If you have notions of finding an organic niche to work in, good luck. They exist, but organic is often expensive and gardens are a financial drain so most owners want to see over-
heads minimised. Still interested? I don’t need to talk about positives if you’re still reading, so let’s look at how to start in a new horticultural career.
Experience is best, but qualifications open doors. RHS level 2 is a minimum and demonstrates basic knowledge. Plenty of gardeners don’t have RHS 2, but if you’re trying to convince an employer that you’re serious and don’t need spoon feeding the basics, it will help. Most professional situations also look for PA1 and PA6 (pesticide application) and maybe a basic

chainsaw qualification too. Experience can be gained by volunteering at a charity garden, but remember that volunteering one day a week, for a year, in one garden, won’t allow you to compete with professionals in the job market. Landscaping firms, garden maintenance contractors, golf courses and some nurseries are often easier to access because they rely on seasonable labour for less skilled jobs. These can be great places to start but you may need to prove yourself before they’ll invest time in you. There are also trainee programmes such as WRAGS, apprenticeships or sometimes privately available schemes. The advantage is that you’ll get dedicated training. As an osteopath I sometimes require further medical investigations in order to definitively diagnose a condition, discover the reason the patient isn’t responding as expected or confirm a diagnosis. The most common imaging services are x-ray and MRI. The main difference between the two is what they show. An x-ray predominantly shows bones and articular surfaces and an MRI will show the soft tissue, fat and water, as well as bones. An x-ray is the quickest method and often the best to establish many different problems including fractures, dislocations, arthritis and bone density. An MRI, magnetic resonance image, will be able to establish many of the things an x-ray can but will also show areas in soft tissue which
is causing problems. A mass picked up on x-ray can have the composition assess by MRI and further information can be used. Neither one is better over the other, they provide different information to the radiologist who reads the image. CT scans are used in a similar way to MRI
but they use radiation and a dye can be used to particularly highlight an area of concern. Such as the intestine. PET scans enable a better view of cells and cellular structures and give the reader an understanding of how the body is functioning on a cellular level. If you ever require imaging, your medical practitioner will decide which image will give the most information. Any further investigations can then be requested if required. SENSATIONAL SANDSTONE OFFERS
It’s a sure sign that summer has arrived when the banners go up in the streets. They seem to help lift spirits and bring a little bit of normality in a confusing world. What you see in the streets, though, is only a small part of the picture; the culmination of twelve months of effort by dedicated volunteers. 2021 has been particularly difficult, both because of the restrictions on painters working together and because of our determination to put on a good show for the 550th anniversary of the battle. We’ve reached a milestone in our project; 186 banners. This is the maximum number we can deliver with our current resources. For thirty-odd years the project has grown slowly, staring with a single banner at the Cross. The next year, there were three. The early aim was to persuade shops to fly banners and to flood the three main streets with them. By any measure, this project has been a success. Those first banners, fixed labouriously into Christmas Tree brackets, have grown to 186 banners in ‘proper’ brackets and have spread well beyond the three main streets. The banners have come to represent Tewkesbury in the summer, complementing Tewkesbury
in Bloom’s floral efforts and being used to promote the town’s charms. Other towns, spread around the country, have used our experience to start their own banner projects, highlighting their own history. At the heart of the project are the volunteers who spend Monday afternoons between October and May in

One certain consequence of putting up the banners is a lot of requests for more, and we’re no longer in a position to meet these requests, so thinking caps are on for

Putting banners up, and taking them down, in the town centre is a relatively straightforward task, involving walking the streets with a ladder and trolley full of banners. Further afield involves vehicles and more complications. We’ve got no wish to say no, and most banners we put up are visible to visitors to Tewkesbury, to the Medieval Festival or to the battlefield, or all three, but the time has come to think about the future if the project is to continue, bearing in mind as well that the people who started it back in the last
century are running it still. It might be that we will offer a different option, asking willing people to store and maintain their own banners with our support where they’re further away.
What we don’t want to do is to say no, so we’ll be thinking hard and working through ideas through the summer, hoping to have a solution for next year. A solution which will help us get to 200 banners.

That’s because Marchants, the 70-year-old Cheltenham based family coach and travel firm, has agreed to ‘wrap’ one of its double-decker buses with images advertising the GWSR’s train services. The popular heritage railway, which operates between Cheltenham and Broadway, is emerging from Covid restrictions and resuming normal operations. The dramatic buswrap which features a train crossing the spectacular Stanway Viaduct on the sides, and an almost life-sized headon image of a locomotive on the back, will be seen in and around Cheltenham over the coming months. Roger Marchant, Marchants Managing Director, commented: “This is a really exciting opportunity for us and for the railway. It’s the first time that we

Stepping out at the 2021 Winchcombe Walking Festival The award-winning Cotswolds Walking Festival at Winchcombe is set to go ahead in October albeit in a scaleddown format. The event, which normally takes place in May, had to be postponed this Spring due to Covid restrictions. Winchcombe is sometimes described as ‘the walking capital of the Cotswolds’ as it is the meeting point of several of the county’s waymarked trails. A walking festival was established in the town over twelve years ago, with rambles being led by knowledgeable guides from the area. The routes are designed to suit people of all abilities and mostly take place in the daytime. This autumn’s event will be held over the weekend of 1st-3rd October, and the programme will be announced on social media during August.
