The shepherd's hut of the title is the location where Jaxie Clackton, a teenage boy ends up after a series of initial events that are covered in the first part of this unusual Australian story, which is recounted by Jaxie himself. We first meet him suffering not only some physical abuse from his father, who he works for, but also regular verbal insults; his mother, to whom he was close, having died some months earlier. On finding his father crushed underneath his car, the jack having collapsed; he fears that he will be blamed. In their small town everybody knows everything, and their relationship is public knowledge. He sets off, on foot, in somewhat of a hurry taking many of the things he will need, but omitting to pack some other essentials. He is armed with a rifle, which he is more than proficient, for his age, at using. He treks north for several days, the aim is to reach his girl friend and cousin Lee, and during this hike we learn about Jaxie and Lee, their childhood and how their unusual upbringings has brought them closer together. He reaches an old miner's hut where he stays for a few days, hunting, but he cannot keep his meat so plans to fetch salt. It is on this outing he arrives at the shepherd's hut, where he meets Fintan MacGillis, a retired Irish Catholic priest who lives out in this deserted location on the edge of the salt plain. The story unfolds as their relationship develops from initial mistrust by Jaxie, who thinks he
must be a paedophile, for him to have been marooned out their, apparently by the church, who twice a year resupply him with the basic essentials. The exact story is in part revealed. Fintan is an odd character, but who would not be after living a solitary existence until a rather brash teenager turns up. Jaxie is always planning to move on but the days pass into weeks, and months until the wind changes which leads to a series of fairly brutal events which epitomise the harsh life that some inhabitants of Western Australia live. This is not a story for those of a delicate disposition, equally it is not overly gruesome; it has it's fair share of Aussie slang, and swearing, but it does give a very clear view of rural life and whilst some of that continent is very sophisticated, there are vast swathes of land where human inhabitation has declined leaving a scarred landscape. Jaxie's early life has also been scarred, how he and Fintan come together is a good read. GWSR train services will resume in August The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway (GWSR), which operates steam and heritage diesel train services between Cheltenham Racecourse and Broadway, has announced that it will resume some operations from Saturday 15th August. The service will comprise pre-bookable trains on some days from Toddington station, which will operate a round trip with stops at Cheltenham Race-course and Broadway. Trains will not stop at Hayles Abbey Halt, Winchcombe or Gotherington. Richard Johnson, the volunteer chairman of GWSR explains: “We are planning to re-start services cautiously at a time when Covid-19 restrictions are progressively being lifted. “We are, however, very conscious that we will still need to maintain self-distancing and great care will be taken to ensure the safety of our visitors and volunteers. “We will be using coaches that have an old-fashioned side corridor with compartments that have sliding doors. The idea is that visitors will be able to book a compartment for a minimum of two people and for family groups of up to eight. “The trains will be thoroughly cleaned after every trip.

As one of over 950 volunteers, I must say that I can’t wait to see trains running through the Cotswolds on our railway once again!” The GWSR is therefore planning to operate some ‘ghost trains’ in advance to ensure that when public services resume, they do so with the utmost safety in mind. Volunteer staff are being invited back under controlled conditions to ensure their safety and
the safety of visitors. They will initially be returning to ensure that locomotives, rolling stock, signalling and track are in tip-top condition ahead of resumption of services. Urgent repairs to a landslip south of Gotherington have also been completed, following the success of a £250,000 appeal. SHARING A LOVE OF NATURE UNDER LOCKDOWN James Hargreave has been Shielding from COVID-19 since March. But being confined to his house and garden hasn’t stopped him sharing his love of nature with others. James has been posting daily pictures since April on his Instagram and Twitter accounts, showing just how important even the smallest and newest of gardens is in supporting our wildlife. Just eighteen months ago the garden of his new-build home on Tewkesbury Meadows was just bare ground. James, who is also a Trustee of Tewkesbury Nature Reserve, was determined that even this small space would make a difference in helping conserve and protect our natural environment. He set about designing a garden that would not only fit around family life, but would also be a haven for wildlife. Richard from R. Lugg Landscaping and Gardening Services landscaped the area to James’ design. James then created as many different habitats as he could in the small space to provide as much diversity as possible, whilst still making it practical to hang out the washing, pitch the family tent and grow some vegetables. The Exchange Co-Working Tewkesbury is about to have a new office coworking facility in the centre of Town. The Exchange Co-Working is opening at the end of July and bookings are now being taken. LEARNING DOESN’T STOP AS LANGUAGE CLASSES GO ONLINE Schools and nurseries may have closed but learning has not stopped for local children in the Tewkesbury area. In a positive move, their language club has re-located all its lessons online so that children can carry on with their bilingual learning during the Coronavirus crisis. The weekly extra-curricular classes are usually held, in small groups, at lunchtimes or afterschool in local primary schools and nurseries, following the awarding La Jolie Ronde methodology of language teaching. Tommy Bullock, 5 and 1/2 years old and his award winning poster Andrew Baldwin, Tewkesbury Boys Brigade Leader, wrote in to tell us about the successful Boys Brigade At Home programme. “The Boys Brigade Art Competition was part of the dozens of activities that our Boys’ Brigade HQ have been providing weekly as part of the new BBatHOME programme that started the week after lockdown.
“We held our Awards Evening via Zoom recently and over 40 members were presented with the new BBatHOME medals for taking part in the activities and earning either bronze, silver or gold.
“The activities are available for anyone to do at www.boysbrigade.org.uk/bbathome/activity-packs and we have promoted them via the local primary schools. “We have also provided over 100 Craft Activity packs for young people in the community whose parents would struggle to buy arts and crafts materials, and were distributed via the Tewkesbury Community Response Groups. “The packs were paid for by donations from parents and staff members.”

A VIRTUAL RUN IN MEMORY OF MUCH-MISSED, HUSBAND AND FATHER, ANDREW MURRAY After tragically losing my husband Andrew Murray in a Road Traffic collision on the 30th June 2019, as a family we have struggled to come to terms with the loss. We focussed on raising money for a Charity called Brake last September by getting people involved in a virtual run.
“It is more important than ever to keep in touch with friends and family, I have some great cards and gifts, it will be great to see you all again.”
This year as a country we found ourselves in lockdown due to Covid19 and many people took up exercise to help them through, many people struggled mentally in these uncertain times and charity’s more than ever needed support. We all needed a focus, a challenge to help us through. Knowing the first anniversary of Andrew’s passing was coming up, I decided to set up a virtual run, walk or cycle. The idea was to give not just ourselves a focus but others. The challenge was to complete 10 miles, 10 miles was the amount of miles Andrew had left till he got home.
I set up a just giving page in memory of Andrew with all donations going to the Air Ambulance. 74 people completed the 10 mile challenge, with many others making donations. In the month of June we raised £1,140. We had a social distancing medal hand out and with the support of Jemery Steel from Morrisons, everyone also received a goodie bag with refreshments and food for their hard work. A massive thank you to everyone for their donations and remembering Andrew. Watch this space for next years big event. By Emma Murray.

Animals and plants have been thriving during the lockdown, and this pretty little Ivyleaf Toadflax has taken up residence in the render of a property in the town. It is not a very pretty name for a truly spectacular flower, but it is a Mediterranean plant, believed to have hitched a ride on marble sculptures imported from Italy to Oxford in the seventeenth century. Once the flowers are finished, the seed heads bend away from the sun and towards the wall, dropping their seeds into the cracks – thus they are able to grow vertically up the wall. It’s future at its new home is likely to be short lived, but it would be nice to think it may be replanted somewhere less invasive.

GEOFF SINGS TO A GLOBAL AUDIENCE Local resident Mary Daff responded to our online appeal for positive stories through these hard times, and tells us of her husband Geoff who likes to express his positivity through song. On Sunday 29th March my husband Geoff Daff decided to sing a song, live on Facebook to brighten up the day, it was only going to be a one-off but the response we got was amazing. So the next day he did another and then another and promised to sing every day through the lockdown. We have had plaudits from people in the Uk and from all over the world, including Australia, New Zealand, the Bahamas, the USA, our favourite place Corfu and clearly residents of Tewkesbury loved his singing as well. Geoff said “It all began in Corfu many years ago, it was a karaoke night and someone was singing one of my favourite songs, it was ‘The Wonder of You’ by Elvis. I said to Mary he is murdering one of my favourite songs. The guy behind me said ‘If thy can do it any better, get up there and do it’ so began my singing career. “We went to Australia in 2006 and met up with a lady called Jean
Whittle, who was a Daff, who had contacted us through Ancestry.com. She lived in a place called Ballarat. She had a family get together for
Geoff Daff us and while this was going on she played some music of a band that her father played in. It got me thinking it would be nice to do a CD for the family. We found a recording studio in Doncaster and off we went to record the CD. “Mary took the CD to
a friend’s house for a coffee morning and had it playing in the background and it went down well and they wanted to know if it was for sale. They said that we should sell them, but we didn’t record them to do that. Mary came up with the idea that if we did sell them the money would go to ‘Breast Cancer Research’ as I had lost my sister, Kath age 53, through breast cancer. So, it started, we recorded 6 CDs in all and with a few fund-raising events we made £9,000 for breast cancer research. “While we were on holiday in Corfu in 2017, I had a phone call from our son, Steven, who is one of the directors of the music festival, Lakefest. He said they wanted to run a charity event and asked me if I would sing on the main Abbey Stage at Lakefest, after some persuasion from Mary, I agreed. I sang for 20 minutes and raised over £600 for breast cancer research. I must say that was the highlight of my singing career to date.”

Tewkesbury Historical Society has published its twenty ninth Bulletin. “It contains an obituary for our late Secretary, Janet Benson, as well as historical research,” said THS’s life president John Dixon. Joanne Raywood has written a biography of a missing portrait in the Town Hall of Mayor, James Blount Lewis, and Kevin Willis has written a biography of a more modern MP, Nicholas Ridley. Tewkesbury High School has been recalled by Clementine Oliver and the noble lords of the Middle Ages have been featured by April Irwin and Steve Goodchild, viewing the Battle of Tewkesbury in its European context. Karl Freeman has emphasised the importance of Tewkesbury Mustard and Tony Bayliss has introduced us to his Memorabilia which includes the Nazis. Rub the butter into the salted flour. Mix to a smooth paste with water. Divide into two, and roll each into a round flat cake, the size of a dinner plate. Split, butter and serve very hot for tea.

The other side of the road In a former life, we looked at the former Gyngell Garage on the corner St. Mary’s Lane with Church Street, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society. Across the road at 39, Bert Gyngell operated his bicycle shop. The location of the two shops suggests that there was not much traffic in the 1930s! Next door was Barsanti’s with his famous Italian tea-garden to the rear. 39 and 40 were redeveloped in an intriguing fashion by the Abbey Lawn Trust for the Queen’s Visit in 1971. What was previously the Abbey Garage has been restored as a medieval building – the Alley is the former Aurora Passage which, until 1917, was the Aurora Pub – famous for having one of the first flushing toilets in the Town. The Abbey Garage’s false roof was probably removed during restoration. It is always said that you can never trust a façade in Tewkesbury – and this building is a prime example of this architectural deception for the best of motives. John Dixon

BOOKWORM REACHES ANOTHER MILESTONE The community bookshop with a big heart celebrates its 10th anniversary on the high street. The not for profits social enterprise is the brainchild of manager Karen Brennan and the late Pat Seymour who both worked together at the Oxfam Bookshop in Tewkesbury. When the charity decided to close their bookshop, Karen and Pat opened up Bookworm to

Over the past 10 years, it seems that nearly every Tewkesbury project has been supported financially from the sale of books, DVDs, stamps and puzzles! From the town’s Christmas Lights to In Bloom flowers, the Museum and Hospital, as well as the Medieval Festival and community
groups such as the Boys Brigade and Town Band. The shop provides volunteering opportunities for those seeking work experience as well as providing an opportunity for socialising to ease social isolation. You’ll meet some of these volunteers front of house while others work behind the scenes dealing with online orders, and sorting donations. During the height of coronavirus, volunteers delivered books and
puzzles to those self isolating and shielding to bring a welcomed treat. When we are suffering from health problems, the most important thing to us is that our symptoms are understood and a diagnosis is reached. However, naming the complaint is only the first stage. Many medical problems, once diagnosed can follow the same path and protocol, however, we all respond to treatment differently. Therefore, whatever treatment you receive will need to be tailored for you and your recovery or management. Having a name on your condition can be comforting and
that can indeed be part of the treatment. Many of my patients are relieved when I tell them there is something wrong! They feel like they haven’t been imagining it and that there probably is an answer. This can aid the placebo effect and psychological relief which is a very real and important part of treatment for anyone. Understanding what a diagnosis means can illustrate the importance of establishing further information regarding a treatment plan. For example, “arthritis” literally translates as joint inflammation. “Arth”
meaning joint and “itis” meaning inflammation. Many things can cause a joint to inflame. An infection, over use or auto immune disease, to name a few. Therefore, the diagnosis of arthritis is not enough. Establishing why the joint is inflamed and how this came about will help in recovery and treatment of the condition. The Cross will bloom in 2020 The summer flowers around the base of The Cross have been provided by the volunteers from Tewkesbury in Bloom over many years as a tribute to our servicemen and women, past and present, on behalf of the town’s residents and businesses. The flowers are sourced locally from Brian William’s nursery, and include either petunias, pelargoniums or begonias. Brian also cares for the flowers, regularly watering, feeding and deadheading to
Ironmongers, Plumbing and Electrical Engineers and Suppliers ensure the town puts on a good display. This year the team from Tewkesbury’s newest town centre inn, The Cross House Tavern, have generously made a donation to guarantee the flowers for 2020. “We wish to thank Laurence, Catherine Ali and Tracey from Cross House for their support

Artifacts from bygone days discovered during Barn Restoration Work has started on restoring an old Medieval Barn, annexed to the Berkeley Arms Pub at Tewkesbury Cross. The work is being carried out in partnership with the pub and the, not for profit organisation, The Pub is the Hub, on the basis that the barn can be used as a community asset, for meetings, events, music and more. Licensee Ron Winwood is keen to make readers aware of the restoration with a view to engage public support for it. However, during preparatory clearance, items spanning many years was discovered behind a rubble wall. These items include a Tewkesbury and District, Homing Pigeon certificate dated 1906, a

LOCKDOWN MAKEOVER, UNCOVERS RICH HISTORY Like so many businesses, owners have spent their time, effort and money to give customers a treat when they return.

Landlord of the Berkeley Arms, Ron Winwood, with the help of friend and decorator, Chris Warner, have given the interior a period restoration. During the process they discovered a painted rosette, and charred burning on the wooden lintel above the fireplace, which had been uncovered. A dendrology report commissioned on the building explains that these were probably from lit tapers stuck to the wall with clay.
This would have been the method of lighting before oil, gas and electricity, one can only imagine how it would have looked. Ron has used his skills to age the look of the plasterwork and stripped much of the painted woodwork. He has made a medieval door using upcycled materials as well as creating heraldic decorations, which all give the Inn an authentic medieval vibe. All that remains to be done is to find a Ghost.
Nice to have my boys back! Local mum, Jodie Vincent, was thrilled to see her boys, Jake and Charlie, looking back to normal after muchneeded haircuts at Tyler’s Barber Shop in Barton street. The lockdown has meant that customers have probably waited longer than ever before to get a trim, and it has been a relief to many to get their hair sorted. Jodie adds “I was beginning to think I had four girls, not two brothers, and two sisters.”

MINDFULNESS AND MINI-MOOS Year Six children at Twyning School have been getting creative and enjoyed a “mini-moo” art workshop on the village green with a local artist. Their Teaching Assistant, Julie Bowen, contacted Sam Morris of Sam Morris Cow Art to see if she would be interested in running a painting workshop for the year six children. “They really need to get out in the open, and do something creative” said Julie. Between them, they decided on a socially distanced paint-a-cow session on Twyning Green and Sam started setting the wheels in motion. Sam positioned the easels all around the large tree near the school, with parasols overhead, and soon the paint was flowing - a good time was had by all. The children really enjoyed their afternoon and all proudly went home to show off their canvasses. One parent said “Today was incredible - all spaced out on the village green. What a lovely memory.” Another said “It was an absolutely amazing day.”

CYCLING, ITS BENEFITS AND A SENSE OF FREEDOM DURING LOCKDOWN As a keen cyclist I have noticed an increase in people cycling and making the most of our daily exercise during lockdown. Clearing the mind, whilst out on the bike for an hour is a pretty kind thing to do for yourself, a sense of freedom. It is a known fact that physical activity stimulates the release of serotonin and endorphins. These brain chemicals play an important part in regulating your mood. If you are new to cycling it is imperative to have the bike correctly fitted in terms of frame size and especially seat height. A guide for the correct seat height is
your knee should be slightly bent (25 to 30 degrees of flexion of the extended leg when the pedal is at the bottom, dead centre) on the down pedal whilst seated in the saddle. If you have knee pain, you will
require greater than 30 degrees of flexion, and therefore the seat should be lowered. Pain in the anterior aspect of the knee can be due to powerful ‘cycling quads’ which might deliver too much shear force across

It is important to stretch out the quads and concentrate on keeping the Glutes strong to keep an even balance from both muscle groups. Examples of exercise that can used to strengthen the glutes: • Side-lying abductions and side-lying clams with the weaker leg • Glute bridge (feet on the floor and elevate the hips) • Planks • Deep lunge • Pigeon Stretch – a yoga pose • Kneeling quad stretch I have briefly outlined how pain in the knee can be a referred pain from tight thigh (quad) muscles. Tight hamstrings can limit the performance by restraining the leg during the downstroke on the pedal. A knock-on effect from tight hamstrings is a common cause of a tight lower back. Equally, the pelvis may be out of position or from over pronated feet. Tight gluteus muscles can occur, and by releasing these, can has a positive result in allowing the pelvis to return to a more neutral position. An initial assessment of the biomechanics of your posture, by means of an initial assessment can highlight how there may be secondary reasons for pain that is being presented. This small square of land belongs to Tewkesbury Hospital, so it was not developed when the new GP surgery was built. The Apple trees planted in 2017 are flourishing, bearing some fruit this year, but most of the apples have been removed as the trees are still juvenile and need to conserve their energy to develop roots and grow. There are also two old cooking apple trees which would have been planted in the grounds of Orchard House, the Edwardian villa that was on the site of the previous hospital. These two veteran trees are a testimony to the capabilities of their survival which is what inspired and prompted me to plant the new trees (with Matron’s permission). A mini orchard within a this small habitat is so vital for wildlife even on a small scale. The grasses, brambles and weeds provide a habitat for insects too. It is very pleasing to observe butterflies enjoying the bramble flower nectar or basking on a warm stone to rest in this haven. Once lost these little green spaces are irretrievable.
