If Charles Frazier rings a distant bell, back in 1997 he published "Cold Mountain" which became a bestseller, and went on to be filmed. Some twentytwo years later, and only the author's fourth novel he again focuses on the American Civil War, in his latest book, "Varina". Varina Davis was the second wife of the Confederate President of Southern States, Jefferson Davis, who she married when she was a teenager, he a still grieving widower. He was not then a politician, a career he started after their marriage, interrupted when he fought in the Mexican War, was wounded, and became a hero before returning to become a Senator, and eventually to be the only Confederate President.

Varina, V, had grown up overlooking the Mississippi, and when 17 had been sent by her parents to visit the family of Joseph Davis on their plantation. A year later she is married to his brother Jeff, and cast away from her family home where her father's only successes were failed ventures. Seemingly Varina's new life should have been an improvement, her story, when she is 80, is told in flashbacks. It is recounted following a visit by James Blake, a black school teacher, who she rescued as a child, nicknamed Jimmie Limber, due to his double joint-

The two meet on regular Sundays, sometimes venturing off to the races, but V supplies Jimmie with a part of his life that he has forgotten, the time when the Davis family fled Richmond, Virginia, to escape the Union troops who were plundering all before them. It is this part of the book which provides the real historical interest in this novel, as Frazier depicts the depravity and poverty the south endured in believable detail, and of the Presidential family's slow but desperate flight south. These parts alone make the book a worthwhile read, but the rest of Varina's and Jeff's lives, often spent apart, reuniting in Jeff's old age on the Gulf coast, add a complete other strand. V was certainly a remarkable and stalwart lady. A good read. An unusual story, well told, and hidden away in American history which makes it all the more interesting. Selected by: Ian B. DOUBLE HEADLINER COMEDY NIGHT AT THE WATSON HALL A night of first rate hilarity is set for Tewkesbury next month, when Scallywags Comedy present a Double Headliner Night at the George Watson Memorial Hall in Barton Street. Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalist Noel James will be joined by top TV comedian Nathan Caton, who has appeared on many shows including ‘Live at the Apollo and ‘Mock The Week.’ Also on the bill will be two local comedians Marti (aka Tim Hoskins) and popular entertainer Jon Wagstaffe, who comes from Tewkesbury. Jon will also act as MC on the night. Promoter and performer Jon Wagstaffe started out on the comedy circuit in 2010, and has racked up close to 1500 gigs in that period. He has brought laughter up and down the UK, including two small runs at the Edinburgh fringe festival. “Scallywags started in 2012 and we run nights all around the country at every level, said Jon. “We also book the comedy for Lakefest Festival,” he added. The comedy night at The Watson Hall is a double headliner special , and the acts have over 35 years experience between them. Noel James, a teacher from South Wales,

received a standing ovation from three of the judges in his ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ semi-final. All but Simon Cowell rose to their feet. Judge David Walliams said that Noel ‘deserved to be one of the biggest stars on British TV.’

AGP was established at Croft Farm by proprietor Ali Phillips just over two years ago. Since then he has seen the business go from strength to strength, while keeping a close eye on developments in technology. “There’s no doubt that the number of hybrid and electric vehicles on the road is increasing, and with the drive forward to reduce emissions, the vehicles we will be driving a decade from now will be very different,” said Ali. Although he has ten years experience under his belt, Ali is still willing to learn more and acquire new skills. After identifying a need for a workshop equipped to service and repair electric and hybrid vehicles in the area, Ali embarked on a training course in Berkshire to learn more about them. After achieving IMI approval, he has now

Swifts Skittle Team Charity Donation To The Cotswold Prostrate Cancer Support Group For many years people around the world have set themselves tasks to raise money for those less fortunate than themselves. The 2018/2019 skittle season was going to be the turn of the Swifts Skittle Team. 14 men wanted to do their bit whilst enjoying a social evening. So, Rob Danter (Captain) and Jim Godson put the proposal forward to donate our cash to The Cotswold Prostrate Cancer support group. This group was started in 2007, by men who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. As we all know, men are not very good at going to the Dr, unless they really have to. Sadly, a disease that affects 1 in 7 men, and kills 1 man every 45mins. Our chosen charity is not there to try to sort out the aftermath, but to try to prevent this disease before it is too late. We are here to help men come to terms with the challenge of the diagnosis, and be better able to handle the difficult periods when it is often traumatic to talk to people, even those very close to you. A proactive approach,

which is absolutely vital in its fight to prevent more men losing their life.

In late July and in August, Tewkesbury Friends of the Earth have planned a ‘walkabout’ in Tewkesbury to establish what trees the town has, their condition and if there are suitable sites to plant more. It is hoped that the local community will be

TWAITE SHAD MIGRATION 2019 SURVEY RESULTS presentation by Tim Thorpe from Severn Rivers trust on 5th July: Twaite Shad survey data was submitted by 12 volunteers and the results so far were disappointing with only 4,865 Twaite Shad passing upstream at Upper Lode weir. Last year the number was 8,957, although Tim said to be cautious with the figures as not all data was in for this year yet. The excessive rainfall during the migration period (mid April to mid June), affected the ability of the fish to swim up the fish pass at the weir. The University of Bournemouth and the Environment Agency chipped and radio tagged 100 Twaite Shad this year, creating an opportunity to scientifically study the Twaite Shad. This will increase knowledge of how best to manage this vulnerable fish and the information also provides insight in to how to manage the overall biodiversity of the River Severn. Following the talk by Friends of the Earth member Cate Cody on ‘Almost Zero Waste' on 12th June at Tewkesbury Library, the group’s stall at this year’s Medieval Festival focused on Zero Waste and reducing the use of plastic. The Tolley (1757) or the Tolsey/Tolzey was the place where tolls were collected from traders, visiting from the countryside for the Town’s markets. This income was the Corporation’s main revenue. No pictures have survived of it - but we think it was located at the Cross and may have resembled Ledbury’s market hall. The Council met there possibly in Cross House at the corner before it moved to the Town Hall by 1838. It was also named Guest Lane in 1830, a mis-spelling of the name of Giles Geest, a leading 16thC citizen and philanthropist of the Feoffee Charities (which still operate). The two photographs

do not suggest much change since 1973, but the Antique Centre was the second Methodist Church to be built there in 1814, after Wesley’s visits. After the new church was opened at the Cross in 1878, it was used by many social organisations, such as the YMCA, Scouts and Masons. In 1871 there were 12 dwellings in the Lane of various sizes, with Tolzey House (right in Now photograph) being the largest, once inhabited by a Hayward Boot Manufacturer. However, industry then took over the house and the dwellings in the Mill Avon end of the street and transformed it - as we shall see in a later edition.

Serious business at Probus Club Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club meets every Tuesday morning and usually we are entertained and educated by a great variety of speakers who talk to us on very wide range of subjects. Occasionally we enjoy outings to places of interest such as our memorable visit to the Severn Trent sewage treatment plant two years ago, our recent visit to the Welsh Assembly (featured in the July edition of Tewkesbury Direct) and our forthcoming trip to the BBC at the Mailbox in Birmingham. From time to time however, we decide to have a discussion amongst all members on substantial issues that affect us all and some months ago we held a stimulating and occasionally contentious debate on Brexit and the implications of leaving the EU. At the end of June we embarked on another discussion on a subject which perhaps retired people think about more than others, namely End of Life Matters. Our discussion was structured into three parts: Legal aspects, Medical issues and Funeral planning and bereavement. We are fortunate to have amongst our membership a retired solicitor, a retired GP and a retired

Church of England vicar and the three sessions were led extremely capably by our experts in each of these fields. The session on legal matters covered very important issues including Advanced Decisions (sometimes called Living Wills) and Lasting Powers of Attorney and we were given some invaluable advice in legal and financial planning for our later years and for our inevitable demise. Our retired GP member covered many aspects of our health issues as they change as we get older and perhaps the need for palliative care as we near the end of our lives. The final session covered the very sensitive and often not discussed subjects of funeral planning and bereavement and how it affects people in different ways. It is a sad but real fact that all of us are going to die but many people fear the thought of death and don’t like to talk about it and one significant message stood out from the discussion – talk over every aspect of the end of your life with those

closest to you and don’t leave it too late. In Probus Club our overriding objective is to help members stimulate their retirement and our discussion on End of Life Matters certainly did that. How To Protect Assets For Your Loved Ones When giving seminars, I often refer to “the elephant in the room” as being the difficulty in families talking about what happens if a loved one dies or goes into a nursing home. As much as I love elephants, I now think it is more about “kicking the can down the road”. By this, I am referring to Governments inability to bring forward the necessary guidance and legislation on what is going to happen about care and nursing home fees. We all know the Government is going to have to reform the current position which will, in all probability, mean we are going to have to pay, in some way, much more. This leaves us all in a dilemma as to how to protect assets for the next generation. The use of properly constructed Wills can help to mitigate the effects of nursing home fees on a surviving spouse. By creating a Lifetime Trust in the Will it is possible to place a share of your property in Trust so the local authority cannot lay claim to this. The other worry is what happens if we lose our mental ability to look after our financial affairs. If we do nothing and lose capacity, then it could be an application to the Court of Protection which

can be time consuming and expensive. The sensible course of action is to make Lasting Powers of Attorney so we have taken control on who will be able to manage our affairs if mental capacity is lost. The exciting project took place over 8 weeks in the summer term, where the Trelleborg staff taught the students both at their manufacturing site in Tewkesbury and at the school. Students have learnt about engineering, planning and operations, project management, logistics, costing, health and safety and marketing. These are skills that the students will be able to take into future careers and has provided a valuable experience that they can use on any applications for university or apprenticeships. From Trelleborg’s point of view, as a growing business, it has provided an opportunity for them to promote themselves to the local community. O-rings are one of the most important types of seal produced in the world and are used in critical applications in the aerospace and oil and gas industry. To make such a big version produced some troublesome engineering issues, which the students had to solve. The 364m O-ring took

Update From Firmfix Windows, Doors & Conservatories, Tewkesbury Some of you may have seen on social media, that our very own Tracey Grimmett took on the Teenage Cancer Trust 28 miles in 28 days challenge in April. Here, in her own words, is how she did. It was called ‘More than a Marathon’ 28 miles in 28 days. I had to google it, but a marathon is 26.21 miles and much to my amazement I managed to do 54 miles in total! Absolutely blown away at the fact that I managed to not only complete the 28 miles in 28 days, I actually managed 2 marathons. I’ve seen far more of the local area than I ever knew before and feel very lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the country. Along the way we were lucky enough to encounter loads of wildlife and even heard a Cuckoo which must mean summer is on its way. Tewkesbury, Bredon,

Eckington, Strensham, Upton upon Severn, Worcester and then further a field to Warwick and Stratford were the areas covered, I’ve never seen so many parts of the river Avon and Severn. The weather... wasn’t always kind, in fact it was freezing sometimes but the Easter bank holiday made up for it. Going back to the cause, I wanted to commit to something that I had to do every day whether I felt like it or not, much like the regime followed when a cancer patient is diagnosed. My sons regime was more than 3 years of treatment, a large part of his teenage years. A commitment he wasn’t

YOUNG IDEAS By Sofia Hasa, aged 9 This month Sofia talks about some very special sessions run by Sarah Hawkins at the Boys Brigade Centre on the Ashchurch Road on Monday evenings. Relax Kids classes use seven stages of initiatives that enable children to understand their thoughts and feelings, and how to deal with emotions when they occur. This is taught through a mixture of fun games and relaxing calming and craft exercises, finishing up with visualisation techniques. Sofia says â€œI enjoy going to the classes and find them really helpful.â€? Classes usually follow a theme suitable for all primary aged children, but not all children are suited to group sessions, so Sarah also offers individual sessions. STRUMMERS GUITAR OF THE MONTH by Paul Thomas

BURNS MARQUEE When the explosion of British pop groups occurred in the early 60’s, Jim Burns had been manufacturing guitars for long enough to be in a prime position to take advantage of the fact that almost every teenager in Britain was desperate to buy a guitar and join a beat combo, writes Paul Thomas. Now, what the kids really wanted was an American guitar; specifically, a Fender Stratocaster, in red, like Hank Marvin played in The Shadows. But these holy grails were not only hard to come by, they were prohibitively expensive. Mind you, Burns guitars were not all that cheap themselves and so a plethora of much cheaper European and Japanese Fenderalikes found themselves propped up in the corner of teenage bedrooms throughout the land. What Jim Burns needed, in order to prise shillings from pockets, was some serious credibility – ideally a celebrity endorsement. And then, in 1962, the unthinkable happened. Hank Marvin and The Shadows approached Burns. According to legend, they were having trouble keeping their Fenders in tune during their live shows and wondered if Burns could help? Bingo! Two years later, Burns finally managed to come up with an instrument that satisfied Hank Marvin’s exacting requirements. Named, appropriately enough, The Marvin; this new guitar bore a certain resemblance to a Fender Stratocaster but was different enough to have an identity of its own. The Marvin incorporated a number of ‘improvements’ on Fender’s Stratocaster, including the newly designed Rez-o-Tube vibrato unit and Rez-o-Matik pickups. Retailing at a whopping £173, the Marvin was twenty pounds more expensive than Fender’s Stratocaster but Hank and the boys were happy and their ringing endorsement produced an upturn in the popularity and sales of Burns’ more affordable guitars. This was a golden period for Burns. Despite this success, Burns guitars continued to be subject to re-branding and name changes – a trend which continues to this day. Jim Burns-designed or inspired guitars can be found under the names; Burns-Weill, Ormston Burns Ltd, Baldwin Burns, Burns UK, Jim Burns Actualizers Ltd and Burns London Ltd. No matter. A Burns is a Burns. Cool and idiosyncratic. It is the last named, Burns London Ltd, who are responsible for the Burns Club Marquee which is Strummers’ Guitar of the Month. Resplendent in Islington Blue, this guitar represents everything that is cool and enjoyable about Burns guitars. Manufactured to a high standard in Korea in 2002, it manages to be at once exotic and familiar. Like a Strat but not a Strat. And cool as you like. Alongside magnificent farm animals competing to be named ‘best in show’ there is also an equestrian competition, terrier racing and an events arena featuring amongst others - stunt motorcycling. I first visited Moreton Show back in the 1980s, and since then it has grown to offer a ‘farm to food’ experience, food markets, a home and garden marquee, a dog show and over 350 trade stands. You’ll also find local

ales and wines alongside delicious food too. Personally, I still enjoy the fruit and vegetable competitions with some fierce local rivalry for the biggest and best or the most perfectly shaped produce. Arts and crafts are to the fore in the ‘Homes and Gardens’ marquee too. There are discovery options too - demonstrations of traditional Cotswold and rural crafts, where you can learn something new with every visit. But the highlight of the show is probably still the grand parade at the end of the day, when the ‘best in show’ livestock enter the ring. The showground is situated just to the north of the town, and is in easy walking distance of the railway station if you want to avoid the drive (and maybe sample some of that local ale!) The Programme tells the story of the creation of a life size solid chocolate sculpture of William Shakespeare which was commissioned for a surprise birthday party for Jack’s girlfriend, Samantha, who performs as an actress outside of her day job. Prudence who runs her own business ‘Food is Art’ runs through a step by step guide on how she carved it into the finished product and then presents the Bard’s bust in Stratford Upon Avon along with a special surprise. As an added bonus, she created a solid chocolate record which

played Happy Birthday to Samantha on a record player in front of family and friends at the party in The Schoolplace, where Shakespeare was known to have gone to school during his teenage years. This year it was an extra special event, as we were also celebrating the amazing milestone of our Playleader Angela Walker, who has worked at our setting for 30 years this year. there was a fancy dress parade, Taekwondo display and a tug of war competition. There was also a display of memorabilia, including photographs and videos from the past 30 years at our pre-school.

TALKING OF TEWKESBURY by Amanda Orton As I write this, Tewkesbury Cookshop, a much loved face on the High Street for the last 27 years, has announced that it will be closing in September, writes Amanda Orton. What a sad loss to the town that will be, especially with the rise in popularity of culinary skills that are much admired on programmes such as The Great British Bake Off. There’s no denying it – the retail trade is a tough one to be in. I can’t think of any retailer that I know that does it for the money or the glamour! People are always quick to offer an opinion – if the greedy landlords didn’t charge so much, or the councils didn’t demand such high rates, then all would be

okay. Well, don’t forget that landlords are in business too and business rates are set by central government – merely collected by our local borough council. And many small shops are happily exempt from paying business rates.

We trim our outgoings as much as possible and do everything that we can to encourage customers into our shops. Of course the biggest competition these days comes from the internet. Driven by a desire for the cheapest price, many people forego the pleasure of a proper shopping experience with a knowledgeable shop keeper, and opt for a soulless online transaction. However, I do know of one shopkeeper, sadly no longer trading, who spent a good hour with a shopper, helping her with her endless questions, only to be told at the end of the consultation, “Thanks – I’ll go and order it online, it’s cheaper”! But what will these people do when there isn’t a shopkeeper whose brains they can pick before they buy online? People moan about the demise of the High Street, but if you don’t use it, you’ll lose it. There are often long discussions on Facebook about the fact that the shops in Tewkesbury are rubbish. I beg to differ. I think for a small market town we have a good selection of shops offering a wide range of goods.

Yes, there are some things that you can’t buy in town, but given the restrictive size of the shop units, that is hardly surprising. Big name chain stores will not go into small retail units. So let’s celebrate the small independent shops that we do have and the success stories that they have created. Cards and Gifts moved across the High Street into bigger premises a few years ago. Sweets and Treats have not only moved into a larger retail unit, but have also taken over The Carousel tea room, such is their success. Caffe e Vino has recently moved into a larger unit and another café, The Hide, has taken over their old premises. Bluebell Wood Florist in Barton Street and Chocolat in the High Street not only have a shop, but also offer workshops for budding (excuse the pun!) florists and chocolatiers. Sam Morris Cow Art has just moved into The Loft in the High Street where she runs her workshops. A new pet shop has just opened in Barton Street. I could go on with more success stories. The town centre is evolving. It’s always been a place to shop, to socialise, to meet friends and neighbours and that is more important than ever, in these days of social isolation. Even a small amount of money spent in our independent shops, stays in the local economy and helps it to thrive. We can all play an important part in that and help our town centre to thrive.

Creaking on joints is very common. I have written previously about cracking joints and repetitive habitual cracking. Here, I wanted to discuss the creaking often heard in the neck. All joints make squeaks and noises. Indeed, if you use a stethoscope to listen to different joints you would find the noises incredible. Noises in the neck are often reported and it is simply due to the proximation to the ears that you notice these. Bone is a good conductor of noise and therefore you are more aware of these noises. The squeaks and creaks arise from the joint surfaces coming into close contact at some points within a joint. This is often caused by tension through the muscles resulting in approximation of the joints. At the end of a day, gravity will also have taken effect and caused the joints to come closer together. If you have an underlying inflammation in the joints as a result of arthritis or infection, his too will result in squeaks and creaks. In general, these noises are normal and nothing to be concerned about. If you are experiencing pain, reduction in range of motion, heat or swelling in the joint you are concerned about, contact a medical professional.

SUMMER JOBS FOR SEVERN UNIT MVS7 Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service are having a very varied and busy Summer this year. Head of Unit Nic Price said “After the June floods receded our first job was to move a huge tree which was blocking the main navigation arch of King John’s Bridge. With the help of our small boats we managed to get a rope round the trunk and a party of Unit volunteers assisted by Avon Navigation Trust Director Paul Cronin were able to pull it safely to shore so that the navigation could be reopened.” On Saturday 22nd June the Unit was in action again but on dry land this time when they had a stand at Bredon’s Big Day Out on Bredon’s Recreation Field to raise money for Bredon Play and Recreation and they took along an inflatable rib on a trailer which the children very much enjoyed playing in as well as running some games.

Peter Gill's Rock School is once again returning to Cheltenham this summer with a packed week that will enthuse and motivate any young musician. Now fully established after twelve highly successful years the Community Interest Company has seen many numerous past attendees realise their musical ambitions by taking up college and university courses and even by becoming full time professional musicians and teachers. Many of these return each year to pass on their own experiences to those attending the course. All tutors in his Rock Schools are hand-picked by Peter for their knowledge, skill, enthusiasm and energy. The Rock School offers a wide range of workshops which include song-writing, performance skills and both song interpretation and replication. All culminate with a well orchestrated and constructed performance for friends and family members, allowing all atten-

dees to showcase their improving talents and reap the rewards of their hard work. A wide range of music styles is encouraged which is by no means limited to ‘rock’. It is not unusual to have genres such as reggae, ska, pop, country, swing, heavy metal and even jazz featuring at the end of workshop performance. At the heart and soul of every Rock School is to improve communication skills – something which is a fundamental skill for everyone whether a musician or not. Attendees learn how to communicate better, both musically

and verbally with those of different ages and different abilities in an environment that is safe and encouraging. No suitably enthusiastic and gifted young musician will be turned away from the rock schools with suitable scholarships being available - anyone that would like to apply for a scholarship should contact Peter directly. Peter Gill is one of the country’s busiest and hardest working professional musicians. He has tutored musicians of all ages for almost thirty years and continues to offer private and group tutorship. Members of Manor Players of Tewkesbury dramatic group proudly display the trophy awarded them by the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) for their production of ‘Scrooge the Musical’, which took place at the Roses Theatre Tewkesbury in November 2018. The show marked the return of Manor Players to The Roses after an absence of more than 10 years. It was very well received by audiences and received critical acclaim, despite the fact that a number of problems occurred in the lead up to performances. A leading cast member dropped out less than 2 weeks from the start of performances and the daughter of another cast member was hospitalised with appendicitis on the first night. Despite this and other technical problems, the show was a great success. Manor Players’ next show is a pantomime, ‘Robin Hood meets the Babes in the Wood’, which will take place at the George Watson Memorial Hall on Thursday 7th, Friday 8th and Saturday 9th of November at 7.30 pm, with a matinee on Saturday at 2.00pm. The show was written by Manor Players member Ian Leaver.

Monday 2nd July saw the formal handover to the new Club Officers for 2018-2019. Anne Bartholomew became, the first female President for the Club, in 70 years. The themes for the year were “Health and Well-Being” with 3 main chosen charities alongside a wealth of support for local community events. The Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice - Provides palliative care for the inpatient unit to support people living with a lifelimiting condition. During the year the Hospice has received £5,500 from Tewkesbury Rotary Club, which includes an initial cheque; fundraising by Tony and Jennifer Barrett from the Starlight Hike and the Charity Concert at Tewkesbury Abbey in March. Midlands Air Ambulance - Every year, Midlands Air Ambulance supports our Classic Vehicle and in December Mary Seldon, visited the Club and outlined all the work they carry out. With no Government or

Lottery funding, they need in excess of £9 million to keep 3 air ambulances operating. The Club donated £6,000 this year for this very valuable charity. Mary’s Meals works in 15 countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. Its vision is to provide one good meal in a place of learning for every child, drawing them into the classroom to get an education that could free them from poverty. Tewkesbury Rotary Club has donated over £3,500 during the year to support Mary’s Meals. Dogs for Good Following an inspirational talk from the local Ventri-Field family, Tracy, David, 8-year-old Connor and Assistance Dog Tammy, a cheque was presented to assist the charity with all their excellent work. Planting of crocus bulbs - Over 15,000 crocus corms where planted around the town and surrounding villages to remind us that Rotary International has almost eradicated polio from the world.

Tewkesbury Fire Cadets - Provided excellent support at the Annual Bonfire and Fireworks Display held at Tewkesbury Vineyards in November 2018 Winston’s Wish Following a moving presentation by Jane Grimshaw the Club presented a cheque to Winston’s Wish to help with the wonderful work they do supporting bereaved children. Senior Citizens Party The Senior Citizens Party held at Watson Hall in February 2019 Marina Court Village Green - The new village green at Marina Court opens as part of their Community Hub, with tools for the forthcoming person Shed being supplied by Work Aid. Life Education Bus This was funded for children at John Moore School for 2 days as part of their PSHE programme. Plus ongoing support for C of E Primary; Alderman Knight School; Tewkesbury School: and Tewkesbury Fields Care Home By Anne Bartholomew.

NEWTOWN W.I. When Chris O’Grady reached his 50th Birthday he decided to walk from his home town of Pershore to the city of Rome. This would be 1,200 miles on a pre-planned route which eventually followed the ‘Via Francigena’ an ancient pilgrimage pathway. He took a rucksack, sleeping bag and small tent and planned to ‘couchsurf’ wherever possible. Otherwise he relied on the generosity of people he met along the route for food and somewhere to sleep. Amazingly he only needed to use his tent once and made many good friends on the journey. His exploits made front page of the Pershore Journal and he achieved his goal of seeing the Pope. What an achievement! We recently had a trip out to Kelmscott Manor and attended the Centenary picnic in the grounds of Cirencester Park. The highlight of this was being able to see the famous yew hedge from the inside. There is a mystery tour in August and then our meetings resume on September 11th with ‘Poetry and Prose’ by Margaret Daniels followed by Wine and Nibbles. Tewkesbury Cricket and Cider festival 2019 Following on from the great success of last yearâ€™s inaugural event, Tewkesbury Cricket Club are pleased to announce the return of the Cricket & Cider Festival to be held at the club's Swilgate Ground in Gander Lane, Tewkesbury. The town's very own cricket club will stage the event over the August Bank Holiday weekend starting on Friday 23rd with a match between a current Tewkesbury CC XI and the Club President's XI starting at 15.00, although the cider festival will be open from 14.00. Following the match there will be food and live music in the pavilion. On Saturday 24th, the club's First XI have a crucial league match against Hatherley & Reddings CC followed by live music once again in the clubhouse. As well as sampling some of the ciders, there will also be a chance for spectators to win some prizes with our special Cider Quiz Sheet! There is a fun day on Sunday 25th with a Sixa-Side Tournament and various other competitions including country skittles, welly wanging, golf, coconut shy and many more. The event then concludes on Bank Holiday Monday with a Dads vs Lads exhibition match. Will the juniors get their revenge on the parents this year?! The Festival is open to

all and entry is free. There will be 10 traditional ciders on sale throughout the weekend and for the first time two barrels of craft beer - just in case cider isn't your thing! As well as this, the club bar is well stocked with a wide range of chilled bottled real ales, beers, lagers, wines, spirits and soft drinks, not to mention crisps and snacks. There are lots of

benches and places to relax whilst watching the cricket and food will be served throughout the weekend. All visitors will receive a free program detailing the ciders on sale and itinerary of events. MITTON W.I. Firstly we would like to welcome two more members to group - we hope they enjoyed this meeting and will be seeing them for many meetings to come. There was a change of plan for July's meeting. Due to a mix up of dates our 'Fascinator' tutor was unable to attend - thankfully no garden party or wedding attendances were harmed due to this cancellation. It was then decided that a Pub Quiz was in order. In true W.I. style, most of the Jokers were placed on the Food and Drink round. Although there were a few complaints as to how hard the questions were, it was enjoyed by all and quite a few laughs were had to some of the answers. There is no August meeting but we will be back in September to hear about Alpaca Farming. October's meeting will be a talk from a ghost hunter. New members very welcome to come along and join us. MINECRAFT by Jaiden Gokani (Age 9) Young reader, Jaiden Gokani, is a Minecraft game player, and has written this article to share with readers, why he enjoys building his own special worlds. Minecraft is a great game and a good way of using your own creativity and imagination. I have been playing Minecraft for over 2 years and I feel I can create my own world as I picture it in my head. In my opinion, I think Minecraft is suitable for anyone age 5 and over. Just like the real world, we need to eat and find ways of surviving. Minecraft is a game for building and creating using 3D blocks and other objects. You can also choose what mode you’d like to play in. The choice of modes can be out of Survival, Adventure, Creative and Hardcore. I like Creative mode because you can fly around and get everything you need from your inventory list. Survival mode is harder because you must find all your items from planting your own seeds, harvesting your crop or from hunting. You can also trade with other farmers using your emeralds to pay for your supplies. Be careful in Survival mode, as dangerous mobs can jump out and can attack you, and may even kill you. You could build

many things such as; houses, schools, skyscrapers, ships, zoos and even cars that work and much, much more.

One of my favorite worlds that I created in Minecraft, is called ‘Real World’ I named it this, because it has a McDonald’s, Pandora shop, a clothes store and a farm and lots more fun things. Remember, no two worlds will ever be the same. I hope this has inspired you to get creative and play Minecraft and hopefully you’ll love playing it as much as I do. “And what are you doing this afternoon, Slater ?” he asked with a supercilious grin (not that I knew the word “supercilious” when I was 16). “My Maths O Level, Sir,” I said knowing full well that he was quite aware of this fact. He had been teaching me after all. I hated maths (and always have done) and I was none too keen on him either. I knew it was not my best subject. “Waste of time,” he carried on. “Wouldn't bother going in if I were you. You don't stand a chance. Nowhere near good enough! Get in and have your lunch. See if you can manage that!” Just what I needed to boost my none to strong confidence. The same master was Sports’ Master, too. Well I was about as good at sport as I was at maths. No - I was a little better at maths! You can imagine how sports lessons went. Last to be picked for a team if picked at all - not good enough. Sent on a cross country run rather than play a team

game as I was – not good enough. On the side, would not stand a chance of being a School Prefect. That was for the sporty boys and I was not good enough. I DID pass my Maths O Level and later in life became a primary school teacher and headmaster where I vowed that I would never inflict upon a child those dreadful words - you are not good enough -creating that feeling that my maths teacher created in me which grew exponentially and affected me for a large part of my life! Too many people, young and old, go through life where the phrases “not enough” and “not good enough” carry a lot of weight in their minds and, to be honest, hold them back in life. Never good enough to be in the team/friendship group. Never slim enough to fit into some much admired item of clothing. Never clever enough to be in the quiz team. Never confident enough to try for something special.

Never handsome enough to attract that special person. You just end up feeling that you are just not good enough. Period. As I have travelled through life I have reached the decision that we spend far too much time calculating how much we have, how much we want and how much we don't have. The danger is that then we compare this to what everyone else has. Always ends up, if we are not very careful, in the early days at least, thinking that we are lacking in some way. We never have enough. We never are enough. We are so wrong to think like that. Most of us, and I admit not everyone, sadly, have enough. Many have more than enough. Look in the mirror and realise that the person you see IS enough, too. You wake in the morning to a comparatively peaceful world. You have a roof over your head. You have clothes to wear. You have education. You have..... You have..... You have....... You do have enough! You have time to remind yourself that you have enough. You have time to be Grateful. As soon as you start looking at this side of things your whole outlook on life can change, and change for the better. You become more readily grateful for the life you have, the food you have, the people you have, the choices you have. You don't have to be perfect. We all have strengths and weaknesses. We all have imperfections but they do not make us lesser people. Appreciate your strengths AND your

imperfections and you will for certain become more truly connected in life. You have the strength to overcome anything. You ARE good enough! Please don't take the positive things in life for granted. Take a look at your life right now and just look at all that you have to be thankful for ; to be grateful for. SUGGESTION – Make yourself a Gratitude Journal or Gratitude Jar. Every day, sometimes more than once a day if the day is a special, full one, write down what you are grateful for, who you are grateful for, something special that has happened that has made this day a good one. Write it in your journal or on separate pieces of paper and store them in your Gratitude jar ( or box ). Maybe that you saw a lovely sunrise. Maybe the roses are in bloom. A stranger gave you a beautiful smile, you had a great message from someone special....And so much more! On a day when you are feeling a little down and could do with a boost just reach for your journal or jar and read through all those gratitude notes of things, people, events that you had felt so grateful for. Take moments to appreciate those special moments; moments of joy. It helps you to feel good, to cherish life AND to cherish yourself !!! Going back to having enough and being good enough ….. RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker

OFF THE BEAT IN BREDON

Despite the popularity of Bredon Hill for walkers, the village from which it takes its name is often overlooked, writes Jack B. Walker. This month’s easy route explores some of the lesser known paths around the locality - and takes us to neighbouring Westmancote too. Our walk starts from the small car park next to the River Avon in Dock Lane, which is at the heart of the old village. With the river behind you, look to the right and you will see path behind a safety barrier on the opposite side of the road. Walk up this (1) until you emerge at the rear of the Primary School in Back Lane. Turn left and walk along the road until you come to a T junction at Perwell Close (2).

precipitous than similarly named paths in the Lake District! Eventually you will come to a kissing gate (5) which opens on to the lane. Cross the lane to the corner on your left, and you will find a narrow path which leads between the gardens of two houses. The house to the right for many years had a miniature railway running through its extensive gardens. The old track bed is getting over-

䡵 St Giles Church,Bredon Turn left and look for the footpath which descends to a stream. Ford this and walk up the bank, keeping the trees to your right, until you eventually meet a track (3) which crosses the main Bristol to Birmingham Railway Line. Cross over the B4080 with care, bear slightly left and look for the footpath on the opposite side of the road (4). Follow the path across the open fields by a line of trees. This is known locally as ‘Westmancote Ridge’, although it is far less

grown now, but as you near the end of the path you can see what remains of the old station buildings, and a footbridge. I fear there may not be much left of this quaint garden feature in a few years time. The path emerges into a field (6). Walk diagonally across to the corner, and bear left to keep the hedge on the right, until you reach a lane in the village of Westmancote (7). Follow this quiet lane past some interesting old cottages and grander houses, as it bears right, to meet the

road which runs up through Upper Westmancote to Bredon Hill and the ‘King & Queen Stones’ (8). Bear right along the road until you reach a gap in the hedge. Follow the path across the field to return to point (6) and re-trace your steps to Bredon. If you prefer to walk back by road, do not cross the field but carry on straight down the lane until you reach the main road between Bredon and Kemerton. This will bring you back into the village past the doctor’s surgery, village hall and playing fields, where there is alternative parking. Facilities in Bredon are good: there is a well stocked supermarket (which houses the post office too), and two pubs which both serve food. The Royal Oak has a Thai Restaurant; the Fox & Hounds is in Church Street near the school. On the old station site there is a very good recently opened Fish & Chip Shop. There are some shady picnic tables next to the Avon too. Worth a look, if you have time, are St Giles Parish Church, and nearby the vast Tithe Barn (National Trust, honesty box). To reach the barn go through the church yard, turn right and look for the NT signs. It is rumoured that the young William Shakespeare performed here in his ‘barnstorming’ days, when he was a member of a touring ‘Company of Players.’

Bredon can also be reached by the 540 bus (no service on Sundays or on Bank Holidays.
