Retail giant Aldi launched its brand new store in Gloucester Road, Tewkesbury last month - and shoppers turned out in droves on opening day. Now another major chain, Sainsbury, has lodged a planning application for a local superstore, demonstrating confidence in the retail future of the town. If granted, the new Sainsbury’s outlet would be scheduled to open in 2014, with a petrol station also on site. A new roundabout would also be constructed at its entrance on the A46, at Easter Park in Ashchurch. Meanwhile, construction work has begun on Tewkesbury’s new community hospital.

Situated next to the present hospital in Barton Road, the new facility will have individual en-suite rooms for patients, ensuring privacy and supporting effective infection control. There will also be diagnostic facilities including x-ray, outpatients, minor injuries unit, therapy services and a theatre suite.

COMMUNITY CENTRE WINS AN AWARD Volunteers at Wheatpieces Community Centre are jumping for joy after securing a prestigious award for their work in the community. Last month volunteers attended an awards ceremony held at Cheltenham Racecourse, and were presented with the Heart of Gloucestershire Community Project of the Year award by the Duke and Countess of Wessex. Centre Manager, Adam Fendt, commented "We are very pleased with what we have achieved. A competition held over the jubilee weekend proved extremely popular with shoppers in Tewkesbury. The competition was organised by Helen Mansfield with prizes generously donated by the Co-Op supermarket and Tewkesbury Town Council. Members of the public were invited to check the windows of participating shops in the town centre to find the 'odd one out' or the 'cuckoo'. The competition was very well supported, and there were some particularly tricky ones to find. The over-all winners in the adult category were Roger and Margaret Carver of Tewkesbury, who were presented with a food hamper. The junior category was won by sisters Phoebe and Erin Kinsey from Walton Cardiff, who won a Cascades swimming pass, as did Lauren Brook. Runners up came home with commemorative jubilee medals, kindly supplied by Tewkesbury Town Council. Prizes were presented by the manager of Tewkesbury Co-op, William Ellis.

TORCH RELAY FLAG OFFERS MESSAGES OF SUPPORT Tewkesbury School’s new Rowing Club were the first group to write messages of good luck and support onto an Olympic flag due to be presented to local Olympic rower, Zac Purchase. The signing of the flag, which had been organised by Tewkesbury Borough Council’s Sports Development Officer, was used locally as part of the Olympic Torch Relay. The flag, which was signed by a number of local schools, groups and residents has enabled a wide range of the community to get involved. Students from Tewkesbury School’s Rowing Club were privileged to be the first group of students to sign the flag. They met Borough Councillor Claire Wright at their training site near the Mythe Bridge last month. The Club, who have just started training from Mythe Bridge in brand new rowing boats funded by the Lottery as well as corporate sponsors, are making excellent progress.

VILLAGE HONOURS DEDICATED SERVANTS John Bennett (Chairman of the Ripple Parish Hall Management Committee), has presented engraved crystal glass bowls to both Dorothy Marchant and Clive Astin, for dedicated service. Clive Astin has served as Chairman of the Parish Hall Management Committee for over twelve years. Under his leadership, the Hall facilities have been up-graded considerably, including more recently the insulation of the walls and roof, the fitting of solar panels, and the purchase of 100 lightweight chairs. Dorothy Marchant first became a member of the Committee in 1952, when a teenager. Therefore with 60 years of Committee meetings, she has witnessed many changes to the Hall. She has also served as a Trustee for many years. At a small presentation evening, John Bennett stated, “the engraving on the glass bowls states ‘for dedicated service’, and certainly the recipients are well deserving of these token gifts of appreciation. “The Committee hopes to continue their successes of the last few years. Our next event

will be the Roving Crows on Saturday 8th September, and we will be publishing the Flick in the Sticks programme

NEW LOOK TOWN GETS MEDIEVAL LAUNCH The Medieval Merriment retailer-led event, which took place on Independent Retailers Day, was a big hit with locals and tourists alike. The medieval procession, which left from Church Street led by a knight on horseback, accompanied by medieval musicians and costumed retailers, was followed by a large number of tourists who arrived by coach. The event was organised to mark the smart new look of Tewkesbury’s High Street after extensive works. Church Street and the High Street was lined by a cheering crowd made up of locals, shop and office

workers who came out to see the colourful pageant. Outside the Town Hall there was a ribbon cutting ceremony to symbolise the re-opening of the high street, and a net full of purple and gold balloons was released into the air. The Abbey bells rang out to celebrate the start of independent retailer month with much of the merriment continuing throughout the day with retailers offering free samples of medieval foods throughout the event.

ROSES IN BLOOM A recent visit to David Austin Roses at Albrighton had a two fold purpose: to choose roses for presents and to research fragrant climbing roses. Where better to go to see nearly all the roses available in bloom? The wet weather had done its best to damage the blooms but the overall effect was spectacular as the photo shows. Roses are a thorny subject which tends to divide gardeners: those who absolutely must have roses and those who cannot abide them, particularly with the varieties which only have one grand flush each year. Rose beds such as those at Highnam Court, are not so common. Roses can be grown in mixed borders, which has the advantage of reducing pests and diseases. English Roses make the most excellent climbers. They are vigorous, without being too tall, and so are easy to manage growing to 8 to 12ft. They flower all the way down to the base of the plant and are very generous with the number of stems produced from the base.

These varieties are ideal for a wall, trellis, obelisks, arches or pillars. When planting against a wall there is a rain shadow of about 18 inches so plant at least this distance away so the roots can reach moisture. So which climbing varieties to choose? Gertrude Jekyll is a beautiful rich rose pink and highly scented; Graham Stuart Thomas has cupped flowers of an unusually rich and pure yellow, named as 'The World's Favourite Rose'

Starting from the Yew Tree Inn at Conderton, walk up the street at the side of the pub and take the first left (1) into a lane with a stream on the right hand side and a thatched cottage to the left. This attractive little street is known as Watergrip Lane. As the lane bears to the right, go straight ahead, passing some stone cottages on your left and through a five five bar gate into an orchard (2). This is a recently re-established community pear and apple orchard maintained by the villagers. Bear straight up between the trees and go through a gate into a field (3), keeping a drystone wall on your right. At the end of the field, go through the gate and turn left on to a tarmac lane. After a short distance, take the track up the hill to your right (4). This is a permissive path known as Rich Hill track. Walk up through the trees, emerging with a barn to your left. Carry straight on along the track for three quarters

A huge variety of birds can be seen and heard here: the views back down the Vale of Gloucester are far-reaching too, as the picture (above left) shows. Take the next track to the right (5) and note the ruined buildings of Shalden Farm as you go through a gate. Turn right opposite the buildings (6), and follow the path down into a gully, and keep descending with the field wall on your right. Above you on your

left are the ramparts of Conderton fort, one of the principal Iron Age forts in the region. Carry on walking down the valley, with a stream to your left and trees to the right, and eventually you will come to a gate which emerges on to a rough track with a barn to the left. (7). Carry on down the hill until the track joins a lane by a metal barrier. (8). Walk straight down the lane to return to Conderton. The village is accessible by the 540 bus service from Tewkesbury.

RAILWAY SEEKS HELPERS TO RUN EXTENDED LINE The award-winning Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway takes its passengers back to a time when train travel was fun and more leisurely. This summer the volunteer-run organisation is running steam trains between Winchcombe and Cheltenham Race Course - a round trip of 15 miles - with glorious views towards Tewkesbury Abbey, and the Malverns, as well as aspects of the Cotswolds A separate service by 1950’s diesel railcar covers an eight mile trip northwards from Toddington to Hailes Abbey and back, across the Stanway viaduct to Laverton. Combined tickets (valid for two days) can be purchased for both services Commercial director for the GWR, Colin Fewell, said: “As passengers travel with us, they can see that we are very near to re-opening the full line - which will mean that next year this will be a 25 mile round trip – making it one of the longest heritage lines in the country. “But, as we grow, we need more volunteers, particularly to support

the large increase in visitors we expect. This is just one of a series of Tudor Saturday experiences at the Church Street museum. On Saturday 18th August, a family drop in (2pm-5pm) takes a look at the Tudor and Stuart classroom. In those days, pupils had to sit in silence, bow to their Masters and learn their lessons by heart. Mistakes were punished with a birchwood rod against the back of the thighs! The workshop will be ideal for children studying the tudors at school. If you want to find out all about how timber-framed buildings were made, then the afternoon events of Saturday 25th August are for you. Enjoy a tour of the museum’s two timberframed buildings and consider how they were constructed. Have a go at making a mortice and tenon joint, discover what exactly goes into wattle and daub and take a look at an Aframed roof and the

tools used to make it. The Saturday afternoon events all have tickets available on the door, but pre-booking is advised for ‘View from the Pew.’ This is a talk by Tudor expert, Adam Edwards, at 7pm on Friday 4th August at the Old Baptist Chapel. Adam’s talk will examine the tumultuous changes in religion in England from 1500 to 1624, and how it affected ordinary people and their religious practice. Tewkesbury, with a monastic establishment and rising non-conformism, was particularly changed at the time.

Never trust a faรงade in Tewkesbury! Ruth Lane, pictured proprietor of Replay, is to be congratulated on the tasteful way she has invested in presenting this historic shop which is one of the jewels of Tewkesbury. However, the historic photo by Taunt shows how, in the late 19th century, the medieval faรงade was covered over and it was the initiative of Thomas Collins who revealed the underlying timber frames which we enjoy today. The building itself has accommodated diverse businesses. In 1901 it was the confectionary shop of Palmiro Barsanti but it was taken over by wounded war veteran Tom Bassett (pictured) in the interwar years. He was a pork butcher although it was his faggots and peas, concocted in the Belfast sink, that are still part of the folk memory! THE ONE THAT DIDN’T GET AWAY I am sure that most of you know a fisherman or two, and the reputation they have for telling a tall story? writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. This month’s article is the tale of two friends out for a relaxing day of fishing on the River Avon recently, just downstream from Eckington lock. They were sitting watching the world go by when all of a sudden a large white bird with bright blue eyes appeared, swimming towards them. The bird was a gannet, rarely seen inland as they spend their lives out at sea and around our coastal waters and breeding on islands and cliffs by the sea. At this point, the two fishermen were reeling in their latest catch which was spotted by the hungry gannet which proceeded to give chase, trying to catch the fish before it was landed. It followed the fish up onto the river bank and watched as the fish was put safely into the keep net. However, feeling sorry for the obviously starving gannet, they offered the fish to the bird which immediately grabbed it and swallowed it down. A second fish was offered and

Gannet again, the gannet lived up to its name and gobbled it down. The keep net was now empty and, not knowing what else to do, we were called and when we arrived the gannet was still out of the water, standing on a concrete step. We do deal with a few gannets each year, usually in the autumn following high winds around the coast, when the birds sometimes get blown inland and become disorientated and grounded. Back at the Hospital, the gannet was checked over and made comfortable for the night with a large bowl of fish to satisfy his appetite. These were soon devoured and, after another day with us, eating everything that was put in front of him, he was moved down to West Hatch, the RSPCA’s wildlife centre in Somerset where they deal with a large number

BIRTHSTONE OF THE MONTH with Butwell & Jones

The birthstone for August is pretty Peridot (pronounced perry-doe). Peridot is the name given to gem-quality Olivine, a mineral found in lava and in the earth’s mantle. As this name suggests, it occurs only in green, although the shade varies according to the amount of iron present. Peridot has a glamorous history. It is believed to have first been found on St John’s Island in the Red Sea, a site of particular geological distinction due to its

uplifted earth mantle, and was mined there for thousands of years. It is mentioned in the Bible by the name of Chrysolite, and Cleopatra is said to have owned many pieces of Peridot jewellery. It was brought to Europe by the Crusaders and has been popular here ever since. Peridot is not an especially hard gemstone, but is robust enough to withstand daily wear. It will look good either in yellow or white metal, although the effect is quite different. It combines well with Citrine in yellow and Tanzanite in white, to particularly stunning effect. Last month Tewkesbury Borough Council’s Executive Committee recommended to its Council that a strategic framework - which includes a wide range of actions to implement the master plan - is adopted. The master plan has three phases in total, the first was creating the vision – which went out for consultation and was approved in 2010, the second is the adoption of a strategic framework, and finally the third phase, will be the implementation of master plan. The actions, which are either short term,

medium-term (over one to three years) or long term (longer than three years) include reviewing the council’s Car Parking Strategy, exploring design concepts for Back of Avon, looking at options for the future of Cascades and the Spring Gardens site and many more. There are also a number of actions that have already started, including the recent high street improvements – a £250,000 scheme recently carried out by Gloucestershire County Council, which included a complete resurfacing of the high street.

From September, the teenager from Cheltenham, will be attending Pershore College on day release to undertake a two year Sports Turf Management and Green Keeping course leading to nationally recognised qualifications. Michael's passion for golf began at any early age, and last year he was captain of the Junior

GIRLS MARK JUBILEE AND OLYMPICS WITH SPECIAL FUN DAY Last month 120 Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Senior Section members with thirty adults from Tewkesbury District Guides had a fun packed day at Tewkesbury C of E School. It was organised to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and London 2012 Olympic Games. Tewkesbury Guides representative Jane Atkins said: “It all started in the morning with a small flag parade and the lighting of a candle to represent the Olympic flame. To help us start the day we had Kevin Philipson, a local Olympic torch bearer, and local dignitaries. “The girls had lots of fun taking part in activities from sports and dancing to crown and medal making. “During lunch, we

had another torchbearer visiting us. Rebecca Pantaney, a 1998 Commonwealth Badminton Team Gold medal winner, arrived with her Olympic Torch for the girls to hold and have their photograph taken. “The girls were also asked to bring spare coins to make a Giant Trefoil Badge to raise money. At the end of the day they had raised approximately £90 for the local Air Ambulance. They all went home with their newly made crowns on their heads and a new badge designed by two local Brownies.”

Basically, it’s the cheap alternative to Asphalt, (Tarmac) and is a ‘quick fix’, but is it any good? This answer is – ‘Not really’. So, what’s the reasoning behind this? Ok, a bit of history: Asphalt, or Tarmac, (although they’re not strictly the same), is the petroleum based black stuff we normally associate with what is called a ‘metalled’ road. Its advantage is that the bitumen content binds aggregate and sand very effectively to produce a very durable smooth surface, with superb predictable grip and is ultimately hard wearing. The disadvantage is that once produced, it has a limited time span in which to lay and roll it. If it cools too quickly, it ‘goes off’ and has had it – so, throw it away. Tar on the other hand, comes from the roots of pine trees, (sometimes with the addition of low fraction petroleum additives, but not always), is kept as a solid and can be boiled up when needed, to be put down as a road surface, prior to covering with chippings. If it cools down, it can simply be boiled up again and is therefore infinitely re-useable. So, you lay a film of tar over the old worn out surface, reverse a tipper truck laying a carpet of chippings over the tar and then roll and pound it into a new road with a 12 ton steam roller. After that, along would come a road sweeper to re-cycle any loose gravel. Great! – if it was 1950 or 60. You see then, traffic density was about 10 % of what it is today; vehicles were much lighter – especially the lorries, both average driving and cornering speeds were much lower and the application

process was much more thorough. BUT – tar has an Achilles heel; it has a lower melting point than asphalt, which reduces dramatically its adherence to the chippings that have been pressed into it. And because the chippings are only attached to the surface and not part of a chain structure, on a hot day, the two easily part company, with dire results. This is partly due to the ‘modern’ method of application, the use of a much lighter, narrower rubber tyred roller and the fact that excess chippings are not re-cycled, but left for cars to complete the bedding down process that the roller has missed. You don’t see good old steam rollers any more, and so the result with today’s heavy and fast traffic is inevitably a wash out. Take Fiddington Lane for instance, which was closed for three days in March, while the entire length was re-surfaced. It lasted precisely two weeks, because when the sun came out and the tar started to melt, the chippings disappeared, leaving black lines of bare tar and banks of loose gravel in between. Subsequent repairs haven’t solved the problem permanently. As a comparison: turn down the lane to Ashleworth and Hasfield, jut before Tirley. It was resurfaced about four years ago, but with Asphalt; it still looks as good as the day it was laid and you feel safe on it, which I never do on the cheap alternative, especially if I’m on two wheels.

The Wheatpieces community centre was the home to Tewkesbury’s Championship Wrestling debut show. The near sellout event was great entertainment from start to finish and for the whole family. The evening kicked off with live music from local band Cast To Flames, followed by some bone crunching muscle tensing action. The evening really came to a high when Tewkesbury's very own wrestler The Insane Star JP fought in front of his adoring fans in a hardcore match... that he eventually won despite being slammed through a table. The charity raffle for Cancer research raised over £40! If you missed this wonderful show.. don't worry as TCW will be coming back to the community centre in January... and as the great JP would say.. “It's gona be frickin' insane!” Ricky Gill
