FRANCE HONOURS TEWKESBURY VETERAN Tewkesbury War Veteran R. A. Chandler has been presented with the Chevalier de l’Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur, in honour of his role in the D-Day landings during the second World War. In 2014, the French Government told the UK Ministry of Defence that it wished to recognise the selfless acts of heroism and determination displayed by all surviving veterans of the Normandy landings, and of the wider campaigns to liberate France in 1944, by awarding them with the Legion d’Honneur. Former steward of Tewkesbury Royal British Legion, Wendy Parry, helped Mr Chandler with his application - and he was asked to bring along his medal to show comrades at the club in Church Street. The last thing Mr Chandler expected was a delegation to meet him - including Brigadier General Thierry Ducret, the French Senior National Representative to the NATO Allied Rapid Reaction Corps. Brigadier Ducret officially presented Mr Chandler with his medal, with representatives of the town as well as many friends and guests present.

UPCYCLING FOR CHARITY Sixteen students from Tewkesbury School have been working closely with the Roses Theatre to create a range of products for the charity shop. All were made the by girls, ‘upcycling’ garments which had been donated. The students had a hand in designing, pricing, labelling and displaying the goods - and are now hoping to be able to raise money for a trip to the 2016 Clothes Show. Textiles teacher Mr Cummins says she is very proud of the imagination, drive and dedication they have shown.

WHEELY GOOD WALKIES An elderly Afghan hound from Tewkesbuty has been given a new leash of life, thanks to the thoughtfulness of his owner. When Tewkesbury’s museum curator Maggie Thornton realised her faithful friend Boswell, 13, was having difficulty exercising, she began researching canine mobility aids on the internet. Boswell has a chronic arthritic condition in his back legs, which makes it very tricky for him to walk, let alone run. Now Maggie has found the perfect solution - a bespoke harness and wheels which support Boswell’s rear legs,

and enable him to take regular exercise. Without his daily walks, Boswell’s health would have detriorated more quickly - but thanks to Maggie’s dedication - he is now back on the road again. The harness supports Boswell’s hips and frame, allowing two wheels to do the work of his back legs. Maggie’s other two dogs accepted their old friend’s new look as readily as he did - and they still allow him to be boss, too!

LET’S GO TO THE VINTAGE HOP The nostalgic atmosphere created by this year’s Tewkesbury Vintage fair will carry on into the evening with a special classic record hop at the town’s Watson Hall (Saturday 23rd April). Vintage Hop Organiser Clive Montellier said:

“The aim is to give everyone who has been

at the fair during the day - and anyone else who likes great music from the 40s, 50s and 60s the chance to don their best vintage gear and hit the Watson Hall's fantastic original sprung dance floor. “I'll be sharing the honours behind the decks with Rob McElvanney who, like me, is a regular DJ at Smokey Joe's retro cafe in Cheltenham. “Rob will be spinning the best in Swing Jive, while I dig into my collection for great tunes, both classic and more obscure, from the 50s and early 60s. “So, you can expect to hear the full range from swing, through rhythm'n'blues, rock and roll, jive and rockabilly, with some classic 50s and 60s hits thrown in for

good measure and to keep the feet moving.” Tickets will be just £3 on the door, with all the proceeds going to local charities. The Vintage hop will start at 7.30pm and finish at 11.00pm in the Watson Hall, Tewkesbury. Proceeds will go to local charities.

Noonday by Pat Barker, £8.99 At last readers can enjoy the third long awaited finale of Pat Barker's latest trilogy that began with 'Life Class' and followed five years later with 'Toby's Room'. These two books introduced us to Paul Tarrant and Elinor Brooke, both art students until the first world war interrupts their studies and romance. Subsequently in the second book, Elinor's relationship with her brother, Toby who in 1917 was reported 'missing believed killed', a story only explained by their friend and fellow artist Kit Neville, himself a casualty. Elinor and Paul, now a married couple reappear in 'Noonday', but it is now the second world war that harasses their lives and loves. Living in London where Paul works as a warden, Elinor starts the novel helping her sister care for their dying mother in the country home where Toby's memory still resonates. There are many angles to this book. The life of evacuee child, Kenny and how when he returns to London his story continues to filter in and out of Paul's life as London is torn apart by the blitz. This scenario provides for some great

writing about the horror of the blitz itself and the devastation it brings on the capital. Stories of loss and pain augmented by the art within their real lives. Kit also reappears in the book and once Elinor is back in London working as a war artist and also an ambulance driver, the lives of the three once again intermingle. If you have not read the first two books do not worry, 'Noonday' stands alone. However, you may well be tempted to read about their early lives in the first two books that you will find stocked on our shelves. Pat Barker is of course best known for her WW1 'Regeneration' trilogy, also a very worthwhile read. 'Noonday' is published on 7th April. Selected by: Ian B. IT’S BLUEBELL TIME! Without doubt one of the most popular walks I have written about in Tewkesbury Direct over the past seven years is the trek to see the wonderful bluebells in Beckford Coppice, writes Jack B. Walker. Depending upon the arrival of Spring, the best time to view the spectacle is mid-April to mid-May - and this year it looks like there is going to be a very good show indeed. Park in the lane at the side of the Yew Tree Inn at Conderton. You can also catch the 540 bus from Tewkesbury if you want to leave the car at home. Walk up the lane, and

as it bears left, carry on straight ahead up a rough track (1). When you reach a gate and barn ahead of you, keep on the stony track as it bears right and sharply upwards, (2), and continue ahead until you reach the cross tracks (3). Turn right and walk down the hill along a broad sandy track known locally as the ‘Yellow Brick Road.’

At the next cross tracks (4), take the path on your left which leads into the woods. Follow the path down to the stream and cross the footbridge. This section of Beckford Coppice is famous for its bluebells: please keep to the trail to protect them. Follow the path up the bank and through the woods and cross over a stile. (5). Turn right and walk

along the edge of the wood, to reach a small gate. Go through and carry on ahead with the fence to your left, then bear right as the wellwalked path descends through the field. At the bottom of the field skirt a thicket (6) and bear right up a lane between some hedges. The route now rejoins the Yellow Brick Road (7), so bear right and walk up the hill to

FUNDING A WILDLIFE HOSPITAL Most of the articles I write are about the work that we do at Vale Wildlife Hospital and the casualties that we deal with on a daily basis, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. This month I want to highlight the hardest part of running a wildlife hospital, the funding of it. With all the stories of the different species that we deal with and the injuries we see treat every day, it’s easy to forget that it all costs a huge amount of money and all our running costs have to be raised by us. We are not funded by the government as are wildlife hospitals in some other countries, nor do we receive any sort of council funding. The entire £30,000 every month that it costs to enable us to continue our work has to be raised, month in and month out – it is a mammoth task and one which we are appealing for help with. We pride ourselves in giving the best care possible to the sick and injured wild animals that are brought in to the hospital daily. The vast majority have ended up needing our care because of human-related some issue – very few are casualties of natural causes. I feel that we are therefore all responsible for trying to help these animals and return them to their natural environment as soon as they are fit and well. We desperately need people to help us raise the funds to keep going. We do as much fundraising as we possibly can and we also have a charity shop in Evesham (and we are looking into the possibility of opening one in Cheltenham too). But much of our time has to be spent handson in the hospital, especially in the spring and summer months when we can have 600+ animals in our care at any one time. WE NEED HELP WITH FUNDRAISING. by John Dixon, Tewkesbury Historical Society It is very confusing but old Sun Street was at some distance from the Library and has now been replaced by the precinct shops pictured below – Woody’s and the Nutrition Centre. To add further confusion, old Sun Street was also known as Station Street, possibly after 1878. Last month we saw that Boots’ Hearing Centre was once the Coachbuilder’s Manufactory and then the Car Mart (101). Sun Street was named after the public house that was demolished in about 1840. The Gothic-styled buildings were built by the Board of Health in 1878 and designed as lock up shops with no living accommodation. No 1 was famously occupied by Fred Preston, tailor to the wealthy (later Stallards). In front of it was a weighing machine and the late Nora Day claimed cellars from the old inn still lurked under these shops and Sun Street. Behind him was Cobbler Reg Brick, then Barber Stokes and cobbler Jack Hodges. The Labour Exchange had been the Borough Surveyor’s Office and the Fire Station before that. The conveniences had been built on a sheep market which also ran along the other side of the street, until built on by the garage. What a shame these buildings of character were demolished for the Precinct. John Dixon

Come along and try the latest fitness classes with top local and international presenters including former X Factor contestant Chico, who will be presenting his new fitness programme called Block Fit which is four workouts in one!

Kirstie Hay of Tewkesbury’s Fast Fitness for Ladies sent in this report about raising money for Sport Relief. Lauren Wyatt (staff member) completed an all day circuit from 9am7:30pm, which meant Lauren completed over 40 circuits. As our workout is a 30 minute workout which takes 2 circuits to complete in one workout. She completed a huge task and did so well at it with the help of all our loyal members and staff. We also invited members to bring their loved ones in for a sport your sweetie workout that evening, Which proved very entertaining but fun. We have raised over £500 for this great cause.

Dr Rob Vernon has written numerous books and articles on the subject and Margaret was once the Education Officer for the National Coal Mining Museum for England at Wakefield. More recently

they have studied the various British mining communities that once existed to work the mineral wealth of Spain. Linares, a lead mining area in northern Andalusia was one such

have worked with the Spaniards to put together the history of the British mining community there. Their latest book ‘Don Regino’ recounts the short life of Reginald Bonham Carter. The title is the name the Spaniards affectionately called him. He was a popular young mechanical engineer who worked for various British lead mining companies, before becoming the manager of a local foundry, and owning his own lead mine. Had he lived, he would have been the great-uncle of Helena Bonham Carter, the film actress. Unfortunately he was killed in an underground mining accident in 1906, and is buried in the ‘English’ cemetery at Linares. ‘The Spaniards say that only the English and the dogs are out between twelve and three, during the siesta.’ We have probably all heard of the quote about ‘Only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the mid-day sun’, but perhaps we didn’t know that it was known, and said, by Reginald

Bonham Carter in 1902, in one of over 400 letters he wrote home, and provided a rich source of information for the book. In his letters he writes about mining, agriculture, irrigation, transport, politics as well as the concoctions of his cook, and the antics of his servant. Perhaps he was wrong about his prediction about the popularity of golf courses though! The valley that I passed through would at present make a good golf links, which I sometimes think of starting, though I don’t think it would find much favour.’ From an influential London family, his story is an interesting one. He was one of twelve chil-

dren, many of whom became famous in various walks of life. The book has ample illustrations taken from the Bonham Carter Archives in the Hampshire Record Office, and elsewhere. It makes fascinating reading and is available from Alisons Bookshop in Tewkesbury for £11.

Black days of World War I remembered In April 2016, we are commemorating two of the blackest days in World War I, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society. These are the defeat at Katia on Easter Sunday and, six days later, the surrender of the Kut garrison in Mesopotamia (Iraq). At Katia in Egypt Gloucestershire and Worcestershire Yeomanry were cut off by a superior Turkish force. No Tewkesburians lost their lives – but the 500 unlucky ones became POWs, suffering hardship and brutality during an 800 mile desert forced march. Four had inexorably died by 1919: Frank Neale of wounds in Jerusalem; Frank Perkins of dysentery in a notorious prison; William Greenwood succumbed to cholera in Ankara; Albert Clarke of malaria in hospital in December 1918 after a 350 mile march to Damascus. 60-70% of Turkish POWs died in captivity. Frank Pullin and Thomas Strickland of Apperley Court survived – but the latter died, aged only 47, from TB. The surrender of Kut was “the most abject capitulation in Britain’s military history”.

Wartime Spirit: back at the GWR This month

Steam back to the Forties Home Front Visitors can step back in time, pack up their troubles in their old kit bags and smile, smile, smile at a special nostalgia event this month. On Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th April, The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway’s Toddington Station will stage a 'Wartime in the Cotswolds' event, delivering an authentic experience of railways in the 1940s. A full weekend of nostalgic 1940s-themed activities is planned and everyone is invited to take a trip down memory lane. Visitors can travel the line between Cheltenham Racecourse and Toddington, where an intensive steam train timetable will be running. There will be military camps, re-enactors, an air-raid shelter experience, wartime music, singers and entertainers, military and civilian vehicles - plus much more. THE ROSES THEATRE NAMED CHARITY OF THE YEAR The Roses Theatre in Tewkesbury is delighted to announce that it has been named Charity of the Year by local IT company Redsixty. The Charity of the Year partnership will commence on the 21st March with the launch of the Ride to Rio campaign, which will see staff from The Roses and Redsixty cycling the distance from Tewkesbury to the home of the 2016 Olympic Games. Theatregoers can expect to see volunteers racking up 9,227km over the next six months, with all money sponsorship going to the Roses. Redsixty will also be aiding their Charity of the Year through a full

calendar of engaging fundraising events, in a collaborative effort which gives back to the Tewkesbury community. Proposed events for the coming year include a Coffee and Cakes morning in May, a carwash at Basepoint Business Centre in June and a summer barbeque as part of the theatre’s annual outdoor performances in August. Sheldon Witney, one of Redsixty’s directors, said: ‘We are delighted to be working alongside and supporting our char-

ity of the year, The Roses Theatre. They are a hard working and enthusiastic team and we hope to contribute to that enthusiasm and make a real impact.’ As a local Tewkesbury company, Redsixty has supported the Roses for many years, including their sponsorship of the Aladdin pantomime in 2012 and ongoing donations towards various projects and campaigns. In 2016 they have decided to take their support one step further and dedicate a whole year to

helping the Roses raise valuable funds. Staff from both companies are looking forward to the year ahead, which will see them join forces and provide new opportunities for the community through the theatre. The Ofsted report begins by stating that ‘the Headteacher has driven significant improvements in the academy since the last inspection’. It goes on to refer to the school as ‘a rapidly improving academy’ with a ‘culture of high expectation that is shared by staff and pupils’ generated by the actions of the Headteacher. The proportion of pupils achieving 5A*-C grades at GCSE was also well above average”. FIRST AID SUCCESS FOR SEVERN UNIT MVS Members of Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service recently attended a RYA First Aid Course at Croft Farm Water Park and successfully achieved their new RYA qualification. Head of Unit Nic Price said “Instructor Tom Lawrence covered subjects ranging from resuscitation, treatment of an unconscious casualty, recognising and treating hypothermia to drowning and it was an excellent course.” Nick added “We all learned a great deal and this knowledge and practical experience should stand us in good stead if a medical emergency occurs. This qualification will enable five of our members to progress towards achieving a RYA Advanced Powerboat Qualification later this year.”

It is clear that over time a couple of ground floor doorways have been cut into the brickwork and some of the top floor louvre vents have been converted to windows and one has been bricked up. CHARITY AUCTIONS RAISES £4881 FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN TWYNING Recently over 100 people, mainly from Twyning gathered to support a Charity Auction. What happened next exceeded all expectations. For the Parish Church, the Village Play Group and the ‘Extreme’ Explorer Scouts it was the culmination of months of hard work gathering all sorts of charity lots from generous donors both inside and outside the village. The 75 lots, including a holiday cottage in Devon for a week, a visit to the workshops of the GWR at Toddington, a day at the races with a racehorse owner and a flight in a light aircraft over the local area, were keenly bid for. They hoped to raise £2000 to £3000, all being well….but at the end of the evening the magnificent total £4881 was raised for work amongst the young people of the village. All the hard work had paid off. But this could not have been achieved without the generosity of many people…those who gave the auction lots….those who bid so generously on the night. Almost a month on, representatives of St Mary Magdalene Twyning, the Village Play Group and the ‘Extreme’ Explorer Scouts have gathered to celebrate the generosity of all who supported their Charity Auction. They especially want to

thank Hilton Puckrup Hall Hotel who provided the venue as part of their charitable service to the community together with the expert advice and support of Michelle Alcock their hospitality manager. The auctioneer for the

evening was Nick Granger of Bespoke Auctions Winchcombe. He too gave his services for free. With his blend of humour and skill in extracting money the Twyning fundraisers were in good hands.

2ND TEWKESBURY BROWNIES FUNDRAISING FOR SARA Last month, 2nd Tewkesbury Brownies presented a cheque to Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA) after raising £156.03. Ben Peachy, Boat Manager for SARA visited the unit to accept the money raised by the girls, which will contribute towards the purchase of a new boat for use locally and nationally. The Brownies and

Leaders staged two events to raise money. The first, at Morrisons during the run-up to Christmas, saw the Brownies and Leaders standing outside in their Christmas hats, with a sleigh, music and of course Santa. It was

great fun, and they all enjoyed giving out sweets and wishing everyone all a Happy Christmas. The second event involved the Brownies walking around Priors Park with the Sleigh and Santa. The crew from

SARA came along to help and did a great job towing the sleigh for Santa whilst Rudolph and friends had a rest. The Brownies along with SARA members walked through Priors Park wishing everyone a Happy Christmas and

giving out sweets. The Brownies had an enjoyable time and there was a real community feel about the night. Heather Caley, Brownie Leader said, “It was great to see the girls

learning and helping SARA with this worthy course and I just want to say a very big thank you to Morrisons and SARA, and all the Leaders and Parents who helped us to raise the money.”

TIRLEBROOK PRIMARY SCHOOL TO BRING SUNSHINE TO THE CLASSROOM Tirlebrook Primary School has started the academic year shining by launching their plans to become a Solar School. They will be fundraising £8,000 by July 2016 so they can install solar panels on their roof. As well as fundraising events that will be planned over the next 10 months, businesses and individuals in the community can support Tirlebrook by sponsoring a solar tile on their website at http://www.solarschools.org.uk/tirlebrookprimary/. Installing solar panels would add hundreds to the school’s budget every year. That means more funding for school trips and learning resources. Solar panels are also a powerful learning resource for the children, helping them to understand how they can cut carbon and protect the planet. Tirlebrook’s Eco council launched the start of their campaign at the school assembly on 9 October. Tirlebrook’s Eco Council are a hard working team of children who have lots of ideas about helping the school to become more environmentally friendly! They are involved in running

Green Week and reminding everyone about recycling in school. They also award the 'Eco Friendly Class of the Week' each week. They are also involved in community projects such as Tewkesbury in Bloom, litter picks and helping

HISTORIC GRAFFITI It was brought to our attention recently that two windows at 155 High Street had some unusual engravings inscribed on to them.

The building dates back to the 1400s, it is today the main office for Engall Castle estate agents and is Grade II* Listed.

The building has four floors and a cellar where an original priest hole is now blocked up. Engravings in the windows on the first

floor show the names Mary Loys and Thomas Smart and the date 1738. It is believed that they are married from the building which was

originally a private house and engraved their names with the engagement ring.

DOGS DANGEROUSLY OUT OF CONTROL Every month we get several incidents reported where members of the public are bitten by dogs, writes Police Sergeant Henry Wright of Tewkesbury Police. The law relating to these offences are contained in the Dangerous Dogs Act which has recently been amended. Owning a dog is a huge responsibility and should not be taken lightly however by taking time to think about the changes in the law you can keep your dog and the public safe. The Act applies to every single person in charge of a dog in England and Wales and it is an offence to allow a dog to be “Dangerously out of control.” Generally if a dog bites a person, it will be presumed to have been “Dangerously out of control,” however even if the dog does not bite but gives the person grounds to feel that the dog may injure them,the law still applies. Another fact is that the law applies to private as well as public places so for example a postal worker or delivery person coming into your garden if injured could lead to the owner be prosecuted and the dog being seized.

A summary of the legislation : It’s against the law to let a dog be dangerously out of control anywhere, such as: • in a public place • in a private place, eg a neighbour’s house or garden • in the owner’s home The law applies to all dogs.

Out of Control

Your dog is considered dangerously out of control if it: • injures someone •makes someone worried that it might injure them A court could also decide that your dog is dangerously out of control if either of the following apply: • it attacks someone’s animal • the owner of an animal thinks they could be injured if they tried to stop your dog attack-

ing their animal A farmer is allowed to kill your dog if it’s worrying their livestock.

Penalties

You can get an unlimited fine or be sent to prison for up to 6 months (or both) if your dog is dangerously out of control. You may not be allowed to own a dog in the future and your dog may be destroyed. If you let your dog injure someone you can be sent to prison for up to five years or fined (or both). If you deliberately use your dog to injure someone you could be charged with ‘malicious wounding’. If you allow your dog to kill someone you can be sent to prison for up to fourteen years or get an unlimited fine (or both). If you allow your dog to injure an assistance

dog (eg a guide dog) you can be sent to prison for up to 3 years or fined (or both). We want to promote responsible dog ownership and keep the public safe, please ensure that your dog is kept under control at all times especially around children and livestock.

Jon Lewis, from the Railway Inn at Ripple, is also starting to organise a beer and cider festival in the village, which he plans to stage during June. Jon is very keen to hear from any brewers of craft beer and cider within a twenty mile radius of Tewkesbury who would like to take part. The aim is to provide an opportunity to showcase local real ales, cider and perry - as well as providing a fun day out for the whole family. This meeting will also see the only appearance of the season for the NHCA motorcycles. The motorcycles and sidecars are always a spectacular sight as they make their way up the tight confines of the track. The 1127 yard course rises over 200 feet via short straights, fast and slow corners and a breathtaking hairpin, with the fastest modern racing cars completing the course in under 36 seconds. Prescott, which is home to the Bugatti Owners’ Club, is situated five miles north east of Cheltenham off the A435 (Evesham Road) between Gotherington & Gretton.
