A NEW CAR BOOT SALE FOR TEWKESBURY? It has been announced that a new Sunday car boot sale will take place in Northway Lane Tewkesbury, starting on Sunday 5th May. The organiser, Mark Hutchings, thinks the town needs a venue where local people can, buy, sell and recycle surplus and un-needed items, as reuse is the best method of recycling. The sale will take place in the field opposite the former British Car Auctions site, with sellers setting up at noon and buyers admission starting from 1pm. A new event in June will see a glittering lineup of music stars head for the glorious setting of Sudeley Castle, Winchcombe. A party atmosphere will be created in the castle grounds from Thursday 6th-Saturday 8th June, with singing sensations Alfie Boe and Will Young headlining. A family fun day will be held on the Saturday, when BBC Radio 2’ Sara Cox will be joined by the hugely popular entertainers Dick and Dom, with music from Toploader and Roland Gift. Alfie Boe’s special guest on Thursday evening will be Caro Emerald, with All Saints joining Will Young on the Friday night. There will be food, bars and transport from various pick-up points - and various local charities have been given their own space to raise funds at the event. February 1491 is the setting for Samantha Harvey's new book, rural Somerset, it's location. The story runs over just four days, and the author recounts the events, in effect backwards, starting on Shrove Tuesday, concluding on the preceding [Egg] Saturday. Samantha Harvey's fourth novel is a big change from her earlier ones, and her move to Medieval England works as does the language she uses. She has cleverly chosen to construct the story writing in a modern style but with a distinct Medieval touch to the language, and the quality of her writing is so good, I, as her reader, savoured every word and sentence. Some authors have tried to immerse themselves in old English, Samantha Harvey has avoided that trap, and excelled.

The story line is very simple, the plot far more complex. Tom Newman the wealthiest and most industrious man in the small village of Oakham, close to Bruton, has drowned, his body not found. John Reve the village priest recounts the events of these four days, and the village folk come to him in his cramped confessional to unburden their souls. Reve recounts the revelations of their confessions, some imagined, some exaggerated, their penitence to assuage their sins, various. These act as an antidote to the main story which is simple. accident, by a third party or maybe was it suicide? Will Tom Newman's soul find rest? John Reve has to untangle the events of Newman's death. He has to account himself to the rural Dean whom he summoned due to Newman's importance in the village. Newman's death could have serious repercussions for Oakham as Bruton's monks are eyeing up the land, even though the village has no bridge and access is somewhat limited. Newman had been endeavouring to construct a bridge to improve the economy of the village which would help the local dairy farmer and secure the villagers' livelihoods. The Bruton brotherhood are somewhat feared. The book is sprinkled with a myriad of quaint rural characters, and equally enjoyable village customs and traditions. These all add depth to the tale as the weather, [remember the floods in the Somerset levels?] swirling waters, mist cloaking the English countryside in winter's damp shroud. Selected by: Ian B. Bredon Hill communities can benefit from donations In 2012, Kemerton Ents Committee was set up by a group of villagers who wanted to provide young and old alike with fun things to see and do in Kemerton. The committee has run movie nights, children's discos, curry and quiz nights, all at reasonable costs. All of the events have been well attendeds. It was never intended to generate profits, but owing to the success, the Ents Committee now has ÂŁ1800 in the bank. They have decided to donate this money to local community groups and charities, so that others can benefit. There are four lots of ÂŁ450 to give away, and worthwhile individual causes in the Bredon Hill villages as well as groups are invited to apply. To be considered the following criteria must be met:

SCULPTURE GARDEN RE-OPENS IN MAY The Sculpture Garden at Showborough House, about three miles north of Tewkesbury, will reopen on Thursday 2nd May. Rising folk star to headline Old Baptist Chapel concert One of Britain’s leading young musicians will headline a ‘Folk Treble’ event at Tewkesbury’s historic Old Baptist Chapel in June. Kim Lowings, who is originally from the Midlands but now lives near Gloucester, will be performing as a duo with her father Andrew. The family pair have been writing and collaborating since 2011. They have become well established on the British folk circuit and together form half of the band Kim Lowings and The Greenwood. As a duo they are able to showcase their songwriting skills and the intricacies of their

New Junior Darts Academy for Tewkesbury A Junior Darts Academy is all set to open at Double D’s Snooker Club in Tewkesbury later this month. It’s all thanks to the efforts of Clive Burgess, a local darts enthusiast. “I have been playing darts in the Tewkesbury league for about fifteen years and have run different leagues within it for the last five or six years,” Clive explained. “I noticed that year on year, player numbers were getting less and less and that there were very few young players coming through. “I did a bit of research and found out about the Junior Darts Corporation (JDC). So I decided that I wanted to get involved and try to bring youngsters back into darts. “I have now attended training course and will get the backing of the

Another challenging subject for Probus Club Hot on the heels of our report on our recent talk on fracking, Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club recently had a very interesting talk on the equally controversial subject of Global Warming. The speaker was Ken Ingamells, a veteran meteorologist (and sometime boss of Michael Fish!) and he held us spellbound for the whole of the morning talk. Despite being 86 years old, Ken gave us a detailed, sometimes highly technical and very well argued discourse on all aspects of the subject which was entitled “Global Warming, Fact or Scaremongering?” Ken launched straight in by telling us that most of the serious issues affecting the world today bear three elements: belief, opinion and facts - and global warming has all three. His intention was to give us the facts and let us form our own opinions. He told us about greenhouse gases and what they consist of and how they affect the world’s population how for instance CFC’s in aerosols were banned in 1987 (but will take nearly 200 years to totally dissipate) and scientists’ realisation that nitrogen dioxide (emitted by diesel engines) is now a serious pollutant.
Ken described several other factors which can influence global temperature – the movement of the earth’s tectonic plates, reflection of sunlight and changes in solar energy. Many of the factors we can do nothing about, such as the earth’s elliptical orbit, the earth’s tilt and curiously its “wobble”, each of these having cycles of thousands of years.
So there will always be climatic change: 10,000 years ago the last ice age ended and interestingly 7000 years ago the global temperature was 2 degrees Celsius warmer than it is now. Ken then gave us some options as to how we, the population of the world, can hold back global warming, each option having benefits and potential harm.
Reducing the burning of fossil fuels, wave power (expensive to build and harmful to wildlife and coastlines), solar energy (panels don’t last long and only generate in daytime), wind turbines (UK needs 25000 wind farms to fulfil our energy needs) and nuclear power (with radioactive waste active for thousands of years). This was a very thought provoking talk and demonstrated what a wide variety of subjects our speakers present for us every Tuesday morning. Volunteer John Shelley, an RAF- trained engineer, began the restoration by completely stripping the ride to it components and inspecting each part. The metalwork was in good condition and just needed a clean and lubrication (John is a strong believer in the value of old-fashioned grease to maintain the original look). Unfortunately, the wooden parts were not so lucky. Woodworm had attacked one yacht so completely that the side panel fell apart when touched, leaving only a pile of wood dust. The yacht was treated with woodworm killer and new wood let into the panel. Several coats of Humbrol paint later and the join is almost completely invisible. New planks were made to fill gaps in the walkways. The yachts is the second of five rides to be restored, next up is the Chair O Planes. This has been badly damaged over the years, and many of the wooden parts are missing. Fortunately a recent

Osteoarthritis Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition. It affects pretty much everything with a skeleton. The deterioration of the cushioning cartilage which covers the bones at a joint begins to deteriorate and this leaves some areas with a thinner layer of cartilage and occasionally areas with no cartilage at all. This results in the joint space being reduced and this irritates the joint. When a joint is irritated the body tries to stabilise it by introducing inflammatory mediators to pack the joint. Tewkesbury Don’t Drop Litter Pickers

Teresa Howell and Jen Messenger have been friends for many years and meet up socially once a week, writes Amanda Orton. Recently, they decided to do something worthwhile during these weekly meetings and start picking up litter from around Tewkesbury. Teresa is a self-confessed clean freak and has kept the alley between Margaret Road and Warwick Place clean and tidy for some time. Both she and Jen decided if they “did their bit”, then it might encourage others to join in and make a real difference to the town. In the five weeks since they started, they have already made great headway – you may have seen them in their yellow vests along the by pass, or noticed full red refuse sacks around the litter bins. Red sacks mean that the refuse in them has not been sorted into recycle and landfill. Their hi-vis vests, litter pickers and refuse sacks have been supplied by Tewkesbury Borough Council who have also insured them while they are working. Offers of other equipment to aid them in their task would be gratefully received – in particular a trolley to move the bags when full, as they are heavy to carry. Teresa and Jen said they have picked up allsorts of litter from wet nappies to tin cans from 1992, a dining chair, crockery and knives and forks. They have in mind key areas that they would like to target in the near future, which they hope will create awareness of the difference that everyone can make by not dropping litter, but either putting rubbish in a litter bin or taking it home to dispose of in the household waste. They would love for other people to join them – it’s a great way to make new friends and have a laugh while working. They have already been joined by fellow litter picker, Trevor, and Teresa’s husband lends a hand too. With greater awareness nationally of the negative effect of litter, they are hoping that not only workplace friends will join in, but also schools as part of lessons about the environment. Also, if you’ve tidied up an area on your own, do post a photo and message on their Facebook page and encourage others to do

BOATHOUSE OR STABLES? It is good to be able to provide a good news story of when Then has been transformed into Now and provided much needed new homes, writes John Dixon. In 2011 Chuck Pavey made an anguished appeal to have this building saved and eight years later his wish has been granted. I am very grateful for local photographer Alex Nugent for logging this story. Some called it the Stables, others a Boathouse and it was probably both. Such stables were typical of the Mill Avon’s water front clutter of commercial buildings from the 19th century, which were mostly swept away in the Riverside Walk Scheme of 1949. We think it was also temporarily used by the boatbuilders, Durrant and Vickeridge, in the 1950s. (Dennis Vickeridge is pictured standing below.) Since then it has been something of an antediluvian relict, depriving its owner of much needed car parking space. Let us, therefore, hope that Chuck is now content and congratulate the developers for saving this historic building. We wish the occupiers years of living there in contentment living in a boat house or a stable.

World Book Day at Mitton Pre School The children and staff came to pre-school dressed as their favourite book characters, from Dennis the Menace to princesses, Elmer and The Hungry Caterpillar! The children listened to stories including The Gingerbread Man, and
had a gingerbread man to eat at snack time. They also used puppets

It’s a distant relative to the shrew, and it has changed little in the last 15 million years. They are born in litters ranging from one to eleven. A baby hedgehog is called a hoglet and a group is called an array. They are primarily solitary animals who only pair up to mate. The hedgehog’s specialised coat carries over 6000 spines, which are modified hairs, each lasting about a year before it falls out and a new one grows in it’s place. These little mammals have an excellent sense of smell but very poor eyesight. Hedgehogs are one of the few mammals that truly hibernate. Simply put, hibernation is defined by an animal significantly decreasing their body temperature to about 20C, thus slowing their metabolism down and entering a coma like condition. Which, on awakening, takes some time to recover. It is said that technically Bears don’t hibernate, because their body temperature only drops slightly, also, they can fully awaken easily. However, this theory is not supported by everyone. Hedgehogs usually hibernate from October to April and are likely to change nesting sites at least once during this period. Their fuel during hibernation comes from fat reserves that have been built up over summer. Which is why supplementary feeding is important.

The ‘hogs’ natural diet of slugs, caterpillars and worms is becoming scarcer in gardens for various reasons. Specially made food in both dry and moist kibble is available, but remember, they should be getting most of their food from insects and worms, so this commercial food is only supplementary. Dried mealworms are a tasty snack and can be addictive, ‘hogs’ are likely to fill up on dried mealworms leaving little room for eating their natural food with higher nutritional value. Some people like to feed hedgehogs bread and milk. Be advised that hedgehogs are lactose intolerant. Bread is low in energy and is nutritionally worthless to them. To make a ‘HogHome’, use a natural feature, a compost heap or log pile, these places will naturally have an abundance of insects and worms. If you are making an artificial home, make sure you use untreated wood and you create a tunnel entrance to stop predators, like foxes, from getting their paws in. Our little nocturnal friends can travel one to two miles a night looking for food or a mate, so

Annual Senior Citizens Tea Party The Rotary Club of Tewkesbury held their Annual Senior Citizens Tea Party at the Watson Hall, on Saturday 23rd February. Over 100 Senior Citizens from Tewkesbury were entertained by the Gloucester Strings Ukulele Band who played many well-known songs, providing a real party atmosphere. The Senior Citizens also enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea provided by the

The Bingo and Raffle were also popular adding to a very successful Saturday afternoon. The Rotary Club of Tewkesbury support many local charities, schools and events within the community. This year the main funding event, the popular Classic Vehicle Festival will be held on Sunday 18th August, at Tewkesbury School Playing Fields. The event features a spectacular display of over 1000 classic vehicles, from the dawn of the motoring era, to prewar, post-war, American classics, custom cars, hot rods, supercars, motorbikes, those of historic and engineering significance to mass produced retro run-abouts. It’s not just cars either…over 200 classic motorcycles will be on display, with all the major marques represented, plus live vintage entertainment courtesy of the Haywood Sisters, dancers, 110+ quality trade stands selling
everything from car accessories, autojumble, memorabilia to jewellery and crafts, plus a bar, dance floor and a wide selection of catering. The annual event, now in its 9th year, is a must-do on the classic car show calendar. It’s a superb family day out, whilst raising thousands of pounds for both regional and national charities. In addition, this year, there will be a Special Open Air Cinema on Saturday 17th August, the night before the Classic Vehicle Festival at Tewkesbury School playing fields. The movie ‘The Italian Job’ first released 50 years ago, in 1969, will be a fun filled evening’s entertainment. The cult classic is often considered as one of Britain’s greatest comedy capers famed of its endlessly quotable dialogue and of course the famous car chase, featuring Michael Caine and Noel Coward. The next fund raising event for the Club is the Charity Concert at Tewkesbury Abbey on Saturday 23rd March at 7.30 pm. The Concert will feature Gloucestershire Youth Orchestra, Gloucestershire County Youth Choir and the Gloucestershire Intermediate String Ensemble. Tickets are available from The Abbey Shop and the Sue Ryder Shop, in Bishops Walk Tewkesbury. Later in the year, on Saturday 2nd November the Annual Bonfire and Fireworks Event will take place on the Vineyards in Tewkesbury. Each year this proves to be a very popular family event, again raising money for local charities. The Rotary Club of Tewkesbury is very appreciative of all the help and support received within the local community and hope the events organised will again prove very popular in 2019. Wine production in Gloucestershire is nothing new; in fact it dates back as far as Roman times. More recently - in the 1970s - the increase in wine’s popularity in the UK saw vineyards being established throughout southern England. One of the most successful has been Three Choirs, which was founded just outside Newent in 1973. Covering 75 acres and producing 250,000 bottles annually, Three Choirs offers a variety of wines. One of our favourites at Teddington Stores is the crisp, dry white estate bottled Bacchus - with its hints of elderflower and a long delicate finish so typical of this grape variety. Another locally produced Bacchus wine comes from the Woodchester Valley Vineyard near Stroud. Their excellent Orpheus Bacchus (named after the famous Roman mosaic which was unearthed in the village many years ago) is one which we highly recommend. Woodchester Valley has three separate vineyards in the area, and its 2015 Orpheus Bacchus was listed as one of the
Independent Newspaper’s fifteen best English still wines. It’s a full bodied wine of intense character, and a clean persistent finish on the palate.
Other local wines in stock include Sixteen Ridges (made near Ledbury),Castlebrook from the Wye Valley, and Poulton Hill of Cirencester. SHERGOLD METEOR DE LUXE In 1982, the last of the original Shergold guitars rolled off the production line in Harold Wood, East London; thus, drawing to a close a brief but fascinating episode in the history of British guitar manufacturing. Shergold Guitars was established in 1967 by Jack Golder and Norman Houlder, who had learned their trade under the auspices of the legendary Jim Burns. Initially, the fledgling company produced guitars for other manufacturers including Hayman and when that particular contract came to an end, in 1975, Golder and Houlder found themselves with a large stock of partially finished instruments. It was from these bits and pieces that Shergold started to produce their own guitars, all of them topped off by an infamous headstock logo featuring an exotic-looking luthier attacking a guitar body with what appears to be a dagger! The guitars they produced over the next seven years were considered, by some, to be old fashioned and ugly – hefty slabs of wood with gothic-scripted scratch plates. However, they were substantial, professional grade instruments with original switching options that have gained hugely in status and respect since the company’s demise. The most celebrated recording of a Shergold guitar appears on Joy Division’s hugely influential post-punk album, Unknown Pleasures. Recorded in 1979, Bernard Sumner’s precise and unsettling guitar lines were created exclusively on a Shergold. The particular Shergold Meteor De Luxe, which is Strummer’s Guitar of the Month, was built in 1979, making it over 40 years old. Resplendent in tobacco burst with a smooth, re-fretted maple neck and powerful pick-up options, it is a seriously cool and collectable piece of musical history which, in new hands, has many more glory years ahead of it. New Life for the Old Mission Hall Tewkesbury’s ‘Old Mission Hall’ on Trinity Street is now a Mission Hall again! Its re-opening was celebrated by the congregation of Holy Trinity Church recently after six months of refurbishment.

In 1936 the ‘Brethren’ denomination used the building, which had been converted from an Edwardian carriage builders’ workshop, as their mission hall. Residents of Tewkesbury today who lived in Spring Gardens
as children have recently come forward with fond memories of the Sunday school which they attended and the summer trips and outings. After years of commercial use, at one time as a Labour Exchange and most recently as a
printers’, the building is now part of Holy Trinity Church and will be used for a variety of purposes including providing a space for today’s young people to explore their faith as it did nearly a century ago. At a recent Sunday
morning service the people of Holy Trinity gathered at the Old mission Hall to give thanks to God and celebrate his provision through them of this additional facility with which to serve the community.

Amazing Success in Gloucester Inter-Club Film Competition

March 16th was a red-letter day for ‘Tewkesbury YMCA Movie Makers’. The Club entered two films in the competition which was hosted by the ‘Gloucester Film Makers’ at their H.Q. at Brockworth. Film one “Herman’s Hermit” is the story of a married couple’s attempts to evict a hermit from their garden. Film two “Tewkesbury Abbey’s Norman Tower” This is a guided tour of the secret places, not usually seen by visitors climbing the tower. Both the videos were written, filmed, edited and produced by Club members. We are thrilled to announce that our entries took First and Second places. In addition, The Abbey film was awarded the Cheltenham Videomakers Trophy for ‘Best Visuals’.
This, the 52nd Anniversary of the Competition was contested by five clubs: Gloucester, Tewkesbury, Worcester, Stonehouse, Stroud and Bristol, for the nine films entered. If anyone is interested in becoming involved with our Club, please contact Roger Butwell on

MITTON W.I. A packed March meeting heard Esme talk on the history of the W.I. More new ladies attended group too, which was great. Esme firstly explained her reason for joining the W.I. following a move to Devon – to meet new friends and colleagues (nothing changes!). She told us about Adelaide Hoodless in Canada who wished to educate women and Madge Watts who exported the idea to Britain and helped to start the first British W.I. In Wales. We were also invited to think about the difference between our lives now and the lives of women at that time, housing, healthcare etc. which spurred on these pioneers. She also told us about Lady Gertrude Denman, who joined the movement in 1916 and became president of the National Federation for 30 years. As a fairly new group, it was good to learn more about the origins of this great movement and for all these strong women to be brought to life – many thanks Esme for sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm. April’s meeting will be a talk about a charity helping schools and hospitals in Gambia and Sierra Leone. We will also be donating a good number of knitted hats for use in the maternity wards of these hospitals. New members very welcome to come along and join us. £23,500 Pocket Parks Plus Grant for Tewkesbury Town Tewkesbury Town Council are delighted to have been awarded a grant for £23,500 as part of Pocket Parks Plus grant scheme from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. The grant will be used to help fund phase one of the refurbishment of the Warwick Place play area in Prior’s Park, Tewkesbury. The work, which includes the removal of the current equipment and installation of two new multi activity structures will be completed by early May 2019. Tewkesbury Town Council and the Heart of Prior’s Park (HOPP) have been working together for three years to plan and fundraise for the refurbishment. Chairman of HOPP; Gavin Preedy, said ‘It is fantastic that the refurbishment at Warwick Place play area will start this year. The community are looking forward to seeing their plans implemented and HOPP are grateful to the Town Council for their support of this project.’ Tewkesbury Town Mayor; Cllr Chris Danter, said ‘The Town Council has been working hard to secure funding for this project and we are delighted that we are
now able to start phase one of the project,
thanks to the Pocket Parks Plus grant.’

Angela Panrucker is an amazing speaker with a wealth of knowledge at her finger tips. Her talk with slides on the ‘Order of the Garter’ was full of history, pageantry and famous faces. She and her husband have been to watch 33 Garter ceremonies at Windsor Castle that have taken place in all weathers from baking hot sun to pouring rain. Who would believe that something as simple as a parade could be so fascinating. Maybe we will all apply for tickets next year! It is with great regret that James and Helen announce the sale of Tewkesbury Cookshop This well-known, family run business has been in the town for many years, but the couple are having to sell up and move on because of ongoing health and family issues which have long affected their ability to run the shop as they had wanted. James said, “It’s a really sad time for us both, but we believe that the right person can make a success of the business by building it up into a vibrant part of the community, which it deserves to be. We had so many plans, but sadly things haven’t worked out for us personally and we haven’t been able to carry them out.” They hope that someone in the town will want to take over this prominent retail landmark on our High Street and stop it from becoming another empty shop. They are not looking to make any profit from the sale, so are just asking for the price of the current stock and the main fixtures and fittings in return for a quick sale. Helen said, “The cur-

A Tewkesbury success story Little did Stefan Roberts know 14 years ago that he would today own a multimillion pound enterprise boasting 400 vans and 15 depots delivering millions of parcels throughout the UK. Last year Roberts Express Delivery was renamed RED Transport & Logistics showing how far the company has come since the early days when it was just Stefan as a man-and-a-van operation. SEVERN UNIT MVS TRAIN WITH AVON NAVIGATION TRUST In early March three members of the Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service joined with volunteers of The Avon Navigation Trust at their Annual Volunteer's Seminar in Evesham. Head of Severn Unit Nic Price said “We work closely with ANT during the year and were pleased to take part in their First Aid Awareness Course run by First Response Trainers in the morning. This was an excellent course covering many aspects of First Aid including CPR training using “Resusci Annie” manikins as well as learning how to operate an AED machine (Automatic External Defibrillator). Other useful subjects covered in depth included how to deal with someone choking and also wound treatment.” During lunchtime ANT chief Executive Clive Matthews invited the volunteers to visit nearby Evesham Lock which was completely drained and undergoing extensive repairs and he explained exactly how this work is being undertaken which gave everyone a rare insight into how these locks were made and operate. Afternoon sessions covered the work the ANT staff and volunteers had done during the last year and what
were the plans for 2019 and this completed a

She was 102 years old and blind, but despite this she was a celebrated citizen and retained her memory to the last. She was the last link to events like Queen Victoria’s coronation. She was the widow of Richard Fletcher, Gunsmith and bell hanger. They were of a dynasty of Fletcher gunsmiths, who had two shops in Tewkesbury as well as gunsmiths in Worcester and Gloucester. Her husband died young. What is a service? When talking about car servicing, what is a service? There is no clear definition of a service or what it involves. There are different levels of servicing and many garages can call it a “full service”. Why? Because in the UK, the garage industry is not regulated. So where one garage might change your oil and air filter, check your brakes and call this a full service, another garage may also include a cabin and fuel filter, an engine flush and injector cleaners, and call this a full service. So if the customer just asks for a price of a full service and doesn’t know what it includes, they may find that other items, such as fuel filters, will be at an additional cost. prices that the services are “like for like”. Meaning they have the same detailed check and equally as important, include the same quality parts. Always ask for a copy of the service schedule from the garage so you know what checks are being done. Most garages these days will keep a log of what work has been carried out on your car on a computer database and will alternate the service items to ensure your car is well maintained. If you are given any advisories, it is always best not to let these build up,

POSITIVE THINKING with David Slater It is a fantastic sight to see a flock (properly called a skein) of geese flying in formation, writes David Slater. They always form a 'V' formation. It doesn't matter what part of the world you see geese in flight, this is the formation that they adopt without fail. I have heard David Attenborough explain how this formation is an energy saving device for these birds as they fly. As each bird flaps its wings it creates an uplift for the bird that is following behind. The fact that they fly in a 'V' formation means that the whole flock adds, it is suggested, a 71% great-er flying range than if each bird took its own flight path without any set order. It makes Goose Sense. We can often find in our own lives that if we share a common aim, a common sense of community, a common desire, we can achieve our goal more quickly and easily if we all work together, each person supporting the others. Inevitably some geese are stronger than others. On occasions the odd bird may fall back and cease being part of the formation. The first thing he notices is the
drag and resistance of trying to make it alone so he very quickly slips back into the formation and regains the support that he temporarily missed. It makes Goose Sense. In our dealings it makes sense to continue to work in a supportive atmosphere where we are all heading for the same goal than it does to try and go it alone without any support at all. So easy to lose direction when one is struggling alone. When the leading goose tires he allows himself to fall back and for a bird who is less tired to take the lead. It makes Goose Sense. When one is in a very demanding position or a position upon which many others depend it makes sense to step aside, albeit temporarily, and let someone else take the helm. This can be a rotating position so that no one is negatively affected by the demands of the job, As a flock of geese pass by overhead it is so easy to hear the charming honking sound coming from some of them. What they are actually doing is telling their mates in front to get a move on and to not drop their speed and hold
GOOSE SENSE IS GOOD SENSE others up. This is Goose Sense. We can all do with words of encouragement and the occasional chivvying to get a move on or concentrate on the task at hand ! Vitally, it should be
noted that if a goose gets sick or exhausted and can't help but fall out of the formation, two other geese fall out too and stay with the bird either until it recovers or even dies. They are there to lend
help and protection. When the situation is resolved, and only when, the two geese take off on their own, join another formation which may be around, or catch up on their own. This is Goose Sense. We should be prepared to stand by our family,
friends, colleagues through thick and thin. No one should have to face difficulties alone. Would that Goose Sense could always be translated into Human Good Sense. These birds have so much to teach us! David Slater

KINGS OF THE HILL BACK AT PRESCOTT Motorsport returns to Gloucestershire this month, when the Bugatti Owners’ Club host a round of the British & Midlands Hillclimb Championship. Cars will race uphill against the clock on the famous Prescott course, near Gotherington, on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th April. There will also be rounds for the BOC New Barn Roadgoing (Saturday only) and the Henney's Cider Classic Championships, and the Bugatti Car Handicap (Sunday only). This meeting will also see an appearance from the NHCA motorcycles and sidecars on the Saturday. The first cars will be on the track around 8.30am both days.
