Alternative to incinerator Sue Oppenheimer, director of R4C - a company behind sustainable, alternative means of waste disposal - will be giving a talk in Tewkesbury this month. Sue will be talking about an alternative proposal to the Javelin Incinerator at Haresfield, fall-out from which could land on Tewkesbury Borough residents. It is of great concern to environmentalist Cate Cody of Stonehills, Tewkesbury, who said: “This will be a good opportunity for Tewkesbury residents to hear about the implications this incinerator may have on our community.” The talk is free of charge and will take place at the Wheatpieces Community Centre on Wednesday 5th April, starting at 6.30pm.

A number of successful events over the past year raised a magnificent total of nearly £10,000. The money will be shared between the national charity, Prostate Cancer UK, and a Gloucestershire charity, the Cotswolds Prostate Cancer Support Group. Presenting cheques for both charities to Roger Powell, chairman of the Cotswolds group, Tony Tombs said “These two charities were chosen because I felt the need for better awareness of this type of cancer. “As the majority of our members are men it was guaranteed to be well supported. So I'd like to give a big thank you to all our members and staff here at Puckrup Hall Golf Club”. Thanking the club, Roger Powell said: “This amazingly generous donation will really help our charity's efforts in supporting Gloucester-

shire men affected by prostate cancer, and their families. “It's also going to boost our campaign to raise public awareness of the disease. It's still the case that even though prostate cancer's the commonest cancer in men - it kills more that 10,000 UK men every year - most men know next to nothing about it. “We'd like everyone to know something about the symptoms, and also to know that in its early stages prostate cancer may have no symptoms at all!” The Cotswolds group has evening meetings at the Maggie's Centre, close to Cheltenham Hospital, on the second Monday of each month. Festivities begin at the Watson Hall with a vintage fair, and culminate at Theoc House café bar with a nostalgic music event. You can expect all the usual attractions at the fair, which opens at 10.30 am. A packed programme of authentic entertainment can be enjoyed from the venue's first floor balcony seating

area plus a bustling indoor market where visitors can pick up vintage finds. If you are after fashion inspiration you can enjoy the fashion show or pop into the beauty parlour for beauty styling advice. The popular tea room will be serving light snacks, cream teas and delicious homemade cake.

Once the fair is packed up for the day head down the street to Theoc House café bar's function room to enjoy a 1960's 60's and 70's night with celebrated tribute singer, Richard Griffiths (below with Tanya Chamberlain).

The Easter Bunny himself will be mingling with passengers on this year’s Easter Eggspress train services at the award-winning Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway. On Easter Monday (17th April) travellers can climb aboard at either Cheltenham Racecourse or Toddington Station for this 'eggscellent' event, which will be taking place at Winchcombe Station. There are free activity books for children on the trains, plus a chance to meet the Easter Bunny and take part in lots of fun Easter activities and win prizes. There will be military camps, re-enactors, an air-raid shelter experience, wartime music, singers and entertainers, military and civilian vehicles, a static ‘Spitfire’ display - plus much more. There is plenty of free parking at Toddington and Cheltenham Race course stations. Cheltenham Race course is strongly recommended, as there is plenty of hard standing. High Street market returns next month Tewkesbury’s popular street market is set to return next month, with dozens of stalls selling foods and crafts in the town centre. On Saturday 27th May the High Street will be closed to traffic, and filled with stalls for shoppers to browse at their leisure. Local producers and growers will be selling wares such as artisan breads, award-winning cheese, beer and cider, plants, herbs and preserves. Building Bridges? When visiting Chastleton House in the Cotswolds recently, Tewkesbury Direct reader Celia Gregory spotted this poster on display. Dating from 1822, it promotes the erection of a Severn Bridge at Tewkesbury, which would ‘thereby open a communication from Milford Haven (in Pembrokeshire) through South Wales, Hereford, Ledbury, Tewkesbury and Stow-on-the-Wold to London.’ The ‘nobility, clergy, gentry and others residing at Stow’ and in the neighbourhood are ‘particularly solicited to attend’ a meeting at the White Hart in the town on Tuesday 19th December. Support for the project was achieved, and in 1823 the original architect appointed to draw up plans was replaced by the celebrated engineer Thomas Telford - whose design for the Mythe Bridge was a single-span cast iron bridge, to allow navigation of the river below to be maximised by vessels. The Mythe Bridge was completed in 1826, at a cost of over £14,000. The 170ft long structure was originally a toll bridge, but the tolls were removed some time in the mid nineteenth century. It is now designated as a Grade II listed building, and was strengthened in both the 1920s and 1990s - although it passage over it is now restricted to vehicles of less than 17 tons.

NEW HISTORICAL BULLETIN Tewkesbury Historical Society has published its twenty sixth bulletin. The edition includes obituaries for Cliff Burd and Harry Workman, articles on The Red Cross Hospital at Mitton in World War one, and two stories of child evacuees in World War II – one seeking peace in Tewkesbury, and the other sent from Birmingham to a camp in Staffordshire before settling in Tewkesbury. There are also article on the trials and tribulations of “Tying the Knot” in the early 60s, the steam-powered Stocking Factory turned housing development in East Street – Chimney Pot Row - and the revelation of a Tewkesbury poet from the 19th century. From Howell’s to Hollams

Hollams Road in 2016

Hollams Road has changed so much during one century, writes John Dixon. Before the first World War, it was a tranquil Nursery Garden with their (then) modern greenhouses being worked by one family – the Howells with their ten children. (The large houses of Cotteswold Road can be seen in the background.) Fast forward 40 years after World War II. The Howell family lost two sons in the ear – one in Iraq and the other to the flu epidemic but all except one emigrated to new lives in Canada. The Nursery languished for a generation until the Council bought the land just before World War II so that houses and people replaced the Nursery. It was, however, still a tranquil playground for children in the early 50s. Fast forward 60 years to 2016 and the commuter’s cars have driven away the children from playing in the street. JOHN DIXON will give a talk, illustrating this century of change, in “From Howell’s to Hollams” at Trinity Church in Tewkesbury on Monday 3rd April in aid of the Town Museum.

READERS WRITE to Tewkesbury Direct Dear Tewkesbury Direct, Calling all dog owners who walk in the Newtown Area - there have been increasing numbers of dog owners who are failing to clean up after their dogs. I am a local Newtown resident and dog owner

and I am noticing more and more that other dog owners are not cleaning up.

The photos shown here were taken within a small area of about 300 metres of each other in the area of Churchill

Grove and Tirlebank Way and are from three local homeowners who feel they have to express their dissatisfaction to dog owners who do not clean up. One of these homeowners has a dog themselves, and one is an elderly lady who is forever having to clean up after inconsiderate people. When we decide to take on a dog, it goes hand in hand that being a responsible owner means we clean up on behalf of our pet. Tewkesbury Borough Council provide lots of Dog Poo Bins in Newtown and "poo bags" are inexpensive so there really is no excuse for us not cleaning up. I am sure Newtown residents would be grateful if dog owners would show more consideration to their friends and neighbours and let's get Newtown's footpaths and byways clean again ! His latest book, "Days without End" sees him repeat this same achievement, and the paperback edition has been brought forward. "Days without End" sees Barry move away from his familiar story ground of Ireland, but one of the two main characters is very much a Barry creation, Thomas McNulty, an Irish orphan who has made his way across the Atlantic to the New World. Here he teams up with John Cole, and they become life long partners. The book retells their lives from their first experiences in the world of entertainment, before they join the US army and experience action in the wars against the Native Americans. Vivid story telling, long marches, with extra characters introduced, who then feature throughout the book, sees the couple return to civilian life with Winona, an Indian chief's daughter kidnapped from her tribe who they care for and bring up as their own. It is this threesome who form the rest of the story as they return to stage life before the American civil war summons the boys back in to the Army alongside their old cavalry mates, and previous Captain. Moving through the years and some large geographical distances, the story turns from Native American wars, through peace, until the brutality of hostilities return. Barry covers these changes in mood very well, and throughout he tells the tale with an American "tongue" that is in some way enhanced with the gentleness of the Irish brogue. This book is far more than the love story it has been described as. It leaves a lasting memory, shows the author's meticulous research, and is deserving of all the praise he has received. The Roses has been working with Gloucestershire based organisation Gdance to look at how best they can deliver a new dance programme that offers something different to existing dance schools in Tewkesbury. UNLOCKING THE SEVERN FOR PEOPLE AND WILDLIFE The Severn Rivers Trust is an environmental charity that works across the Severn catchment to improve and protect the River Severn. The Trust has entered a partnership with the Canal & Rivers Trust and the Environment Agency to deliver an exciting new project â€“ Unlocking the Severn. The project is focussed on a little-known species of herring - the Twaite Shad. An important food source for the local population and a rival to salmon and eel in economic importance, Shad were once commonplace throughout the Severn Estuary supporting a vast fishing industry. Now a species of international conservation concern, they spend most of their adult life at sea but migrate far up the river to spawn in Spring, earning them the colloquial name - The May fish.

Twaite Shad However, during the industrial revolution weirs were introduced to the river to maintain its depth and enable the transport of goods by Canal. This made the river Severn an artery of trade and fuelled the

Upper-lode flooded out growth of industry and population along the river, but it blocked the passage of migratory fish, affecting the Shad most of all. The solution? The largest project of its kind in Europe and will see work on seven weirs on the rivers Severn and Teme to open passage to all fish. Fish passes will enable migration while maintaining the Severn as a navigable river for boats. Alongside this, the project aims to reach communities with the story of the fish migration through community

events, education and volunteering. Upper lode Weir in Tewkesbury is an important site for the project. Twaite shad can pass the Weir, in the right conditions, using a notch at the eastern edge. But volunteers are needed to help observe the movement of the fish over the weir in Spring. Follow the path down to the stream and cross the footbridge. This section of Beckford Coppice is famous for its bluebells: please keep to the trail to protect them. It is also home to a colony of fallow deer, which can often be seen on quiet mornings and about an hour before sundown. Follow the path up the bank and through the woods and cross over a stile. (5). Turn right and walk along the edge of the wood, to reach a small gate. Go through and carry on ahead with the fence to your left, then bear right as the wellwalked path descends through the field. At the bottom of the field skirt

Cat of the Month This is Daisy. She is very cute and a real favourite with her dedicated cat fosterer, Linda: she would love to see her find a new forever home. Daisy came into our care few months ago, along with her 7 year old sister, Dido previously house cats. Unfortunately, their owner can no longer look after either of them. ANIMAL MATTERS by Vale Wildlife Rescue

And so the sleepless nights begin... At the time of writing we are only into March, which should still be a quieter time in wildlife rehabilitation centres, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue.

But we have already admitted over 400 casualties to Vale Wildlife Hospital so far this year. The last few weeks have been noticeably busier with a steadily increasing number of calls to us for help. I have been watching many bird species on our site, including blackbirds, rooks, jackdaws and robins, busy collecting nesting material and have even seen one blackbird flying off with a beak full of food indicating that there are probably already babies in the nest. The orphan season has well and truly kicked off with us as we have had three litters of fox cubs brought in all in the space of a week! We rear many cubs every year but we rarely get them in this small (weighing under 100gms each) – the majority are at least a month old and are therefore able to eat solid food for themselves without the need for bottle feeding. All three of these litters were of six tiny cubs each, only a matter of days old, so eighteen cubs in total. Sadly, we lost three from one of the litters, from the smallest, weakest group but all the others are thriving and giving us sleepless nights as to begin with they were being bottle fed every two, then every three

hours throughout the day and night. It is at this time of year that we are made very aware that wildlife rehabilitation is not a 95 job. It is 24 hours a day commitment and takes real dedication to be able to cope in the ‘busy season’ throughout the spring and summer months. We more or less have to put our life on hold for five months as, by the time we’ve worked very often a 12-14-hour day (and quite often more), we don’t feel like doing anything except falling into bed for a few hours sleep. Any day now we will start to have nestling birds brought in, many because of the domestic cat, so we urge cat owners to be very vigilant, keep your pet in as much as possible. Make sure he/she has a collar with a bell on and if you are aware of any nesting birds in your garden, try to make sure that the nest area is protected to keep cats away. Unfortunately a massive amount of damage is done to wildlife at this time of year by cats. Weather permitting, our Car Boot Sales will be starting again on Saturdays from April. POSITIVE THINKING by David Slater It is quite a while ago that this happened but it is just as thought provoking now as it was on that first day that this seemingly very simple incident took place. The scene is a Pet Shop in a small English town and it was the time of the school holidays so many children were out and about with their parents, enjoying themselves. Richard was no exception. He enjoyed spending time with his mum and dad. Indeed he never wished for more than that. He didn't want expensive trips out or expensive meals or the most complicated of toys. He wanted the companionship of the people who meant so much to him. He meant the people who loved him because he was, well, just Richard. On this particular day their walk took them by the woodland animal rescue centre where there was a wide range of animals all placed there for some reason or another. The family usually went in and spent time looking at the fish, birds, hamsters, rabbits, dogs and cats. Richard always took some of his pocket money to give to the centre to help provide the food for the animals. Time was short today so it was likely to be one of those days where

they just popped in, gave their gift and popped out again, This day turned out very differently though. In one of the pens was a dog and lying around her were six puppies that looked like balls of fur. "This is our latest visitor," said one of the helpers who always made a point of chatting to the people as they looked round." "Where did you find them?" asked Richard. "In a wheelie bin at the back of the old church building in town, " she replied." We heard them crying so went and had a look and this is what we found. The mother is exhausted. She has done so well to keep her pups alive as long as she has done. Soon we will be seeing if we can find good homes for the pups, although one may stay with mum for company for a while." Richard stood looking at the canine family with open mouth. He was never the "I want" sort of boy but today he looked at the puppies and then at his mum and dad and said, "I want one of those puppies If I can, please. I really would like to give one a good home." Mum and Dad looked at each other and with one voice said that they thought that was a wonderful idea and chatted with the helper. The

helper also thought it was a great idea and went over to Richard. "The puppies are all awake and playful now, " she said. Perhaps you would like to have a closer look at them and see which one you would like." The puppies ran eagerly to Richard, tales wagging like mad. That is to say all the puppies with the exception of one came running over. There was one who lagged behind somewhat and was quite a way behind the rest. "What's wrong with that little dog?" asked Richard. " It seems to me that he is limping. Has he hurt his leg ?" "He is limping," said then helper," but he hasn't hurt his leg. He was born with a deformed hip so he will limp like that for the rest of his life." "That's the puppy that I would like to have, said Richard. " That's nice of you to say that," said the helper," but you would find that you could have far more fun with the more able puppies. “The other puppy may need a lot of help at times and that would put demands on you. I think you may be better off with one of the others. Disabled or deformed pets are not always the easiest to cope with.”

In 1947, the premises and two cottages were sold to Mr Hampton for £620. A reminder of how recent Universal Suffrage is comes from a ‘Revision Court’ in 1902, when the electoral roll was minutely examined. William Henry Watts claimed a vote as occupier of a cottage in Long’s Alley, but Mr More, acting for the Conservative Party, objected, contending that Sarah Ann Smith owned the furniture and she was the real tenant. Mr Watts didn’t get his vote. At around the same time, the Sanitary Committee were concerned about conditions in Long’s Alley and East Street, and the property owner’s reluctance to remedy the problems, which were about sanitary facilities and standards. After 1903, though, this matter drops off the agenda, so was presumably resolved. Life in these alleys was not as tumultuous as some, with only one prosecution coming to light; in 1885, Robert Hotchkins struck Ezekiel Shepherd a violent blow and threatened to split his head open with a hatchet if he ventured

into Charlwood Alley. In 1945, Grace Evelyn Beacher, of 1, Charlwood Alley, took a large advertisement in the personal column of the Echo to say that any person ‘found scandalising her character’ would be prosecuted. There must be a story behind that! Life went on quietly until that fateful decision to relocate the

police, and the alleys had to be sacrificed. Long’s Alley has gone forever, and Charlwood’s has been turned into a simple short cut between Barton Street and East Street. The Police have moved on now, and the old station has been converted into houses and the area has entered the next phase of its evolution.

A LITTLE MORE OF THE TOWNS HISTORY COMES TO LIGHT Last November we ran a piece on some painted over lettering that could be seen in low sunlight below the window on the British Heart Foundation shop. The word Hopkins could be made out and Simon Hayward from Haywards Hardware shop in the High Street provided some background to the former shop. The business was owned by C E Hopkins and traded in haber-

dashery and it also sold Millinery. Founded in the late 1800s Lucy Hopkins, the Proprietors Daughter married George Hayward forging an inter family connection. The shop traded into the 1960s when it finally closed.

We are looking for Teams of eight people to take part in our Bell Boat sprint race as part of Tewkesbury BIG Weekend. We provide the boat, safety equipment and an experienced Helmsman. We need Clubs, Pubs, Good Friends, Societies and anyone who can put together a Team. You do not need to have any previous experience. The cost per boat is a minimum of £20 which should be raised as sponsorship. There are three cups for the winners, one for raising the most money for our charities, one for the fastest time and one for of the Champion Champions. Anti-burglary advice from a convict I have been looking at the crimes over the past weekend and am disappointed to discover we have had seven burglaries since Friday morning, writes Police Sgt Henry Wright. In one particular case the family car was stolen and with an hour it was seen on an Automatic Number Plate Recognition camera in the West Midlands Police

I hope with the clocks going forward and the days getting longer we will see a reduction in dwelling burglaries but the best deterrent is being vigilant and reporting anything suspicious. I know that over the years I have tried to give tips on how to avoid being a victim of burglary but to change the theme I have provided some tips from a career criminal who has just been sent to prison for six years: --“I have some advice that may stop others becoming victims of burglary. I was very careful in the way I selected the properties I wanted to burgle.” “I would pick a village pretty much at random and then look for a focal point like a church or a village hall to park up at. This would be my navigation point for when I returned at night. “I would then go about selecting properties. I targeted bungalows as it is easier to establish that no one is in as you can generally look into all of the rooms. “Then a really big thing for me was mail in the doorway – it’s such a giveaway that someone is on holiday. “After that it was about careful checking of the property on different days at different times on a number of occasions to satisfy myself that people were actually away. “That means revisiting over a number of days and knocking on doors and tapping on windows. “There are some prop-

erties that I would just never touch. “If there was a “Beware of the Dog” sign or any pictures of dogs visible then for me it was just not worth the risk. “And any property with a burglar alarm, even if I thought it was a dummy; again it’s just not worth the risk when there are so many without them. I would also check for warmth coming from a property and look at the lighting over a number of days. “Some people think just leaving a couple of lights on will do, but actually, if a light was on at midday on Tuesday and still on when I checked again at 4am on Thursday – it’s more of a sign that no one is there. “Buy timer switches so the lights go on and off at natural times. “I stole jewellery, cash and bank cards and I was able to withdraw cash using some of those cards because so many people have pin numbers hidden somewhere. It doesn’t matter where you hide it; any four digit number is going to be a pin number. “Because I was so careful to make sure people were away, I would spend a long time searching houses – I knew no one was coming back. “This allowed me to carefully look through all draws and at bits of scrap paper lying around the place. There’s normally a pin number somewhere. “The best thing to do is disguise it. Make up a fake mobile phone number with the correct number of digits and then hide your four digit pin within the number – that way the burglar will just pass over it.” --I hope that these tips can stop you being a victim of crime.
