IT’S FESTIVAL TIME The organisers of Tewkesbury’s ‘Big Weekend’ were overwhelmed with offers of help and support at an open meeting at Theoc House last month. The room was packed with people - businesses, groups and individuals - all eager to know how preparations were going and what is planned for the Easter weekend event. There is a already packed programme of events with Saturday 19th April’s highlight being the Walking Parade, starting in Sun Street and taking in High Street, Barton Street and Oldbury Road. RECAPTURING THE WARTIME SPIRIT IN THE COTSWOLDS Following the enormous success of its first 1940's event last year, the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway is organising another ‘Wartime in the Cotswolds’ weekend on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th April. Heritage steam trains will be running from Toddington to Cheltenham Race Course (air permitting of raids course) and there will be lots of entertainment for the whole family. Visitors can enjoy the distraction of wartime songs and melodies while mingling with soldiers on leave and on duty; wonder at the bravery of the auxiliary fire service and see displays of military and civilian vehicles from the war years - and lots more besides. New for this year is a display and demonstration of a fully manned RAF ‘ops room’ provided by a WWII RAF group. To add to the weekend's atmosphere, subject to operational and requirements weather conditions, an RAF Spitfire will overfly the event on the Sunday afternoon. played an enormous part in keeping the country mobile during the war years, including the strategically-important line between Stratford and Cheltenham, over part of which the present-day Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway runs. Popularly known in the War years as the Honeybourne Line, this section of track provided connections to all parts of the country and was heavily used for freight, troop movements and moving produce from the Vale of Evesham.
Part of the popular TV series Land Girls was filmed at the GWR’s restored stations. The award-winning railway currently runs services over a 12 mile section of track between Cheltenham Racecourse and Laverton, but is well on the way to extending the line. Construction work is currently underway at Broadway Station and a share offer will help fund bridge repairs on the final stretch. These laws meant that thousands of animals, ranging from crows to were kingfishers, slaughtered, for money, because they were seen as being in competition with people, especially for food. Many kinds of wild creature now had a price on their head. Visitors to the John Moore Museum this Easter can meet the centre’s Tudor rat catcher and discover the harsh realities of problem pests in 16th century Britain. There’s also a chance to explore the 15th century Merchant’s House and meet our Tudor housewife whose home is plagued with pests. Visitors can take part in a ‘Price on their Heads’, quiz and trail (with prizes). All activities take place on Saturday 19th April, from 10am to 1.00pm and 2.00pm until 5.00pm. The John Moore Museum, at 41 Church Street (GL20 5SN) is nestled in a row of historic timber-framed buildings close to the Abbey.
The museum was established in 1980 in memory of the writer and naturalist John Moore. Today it is also home to an extensive Natural History collection featuring specimens of the mammals and birds native to our countryside, woodlands, wetlands and farmland. A few doors away is The Merchant's House, a two storey building which has been beautifully restored and furnished to show the construction of a 15th century shop and dwelling.

Healings Borough Flour Mills, Tewkesbury, under construction in 1865. The recent offer by the developer to enable the town to use spare land behind the former flour mills for parking quite intrigued me, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society. When the 2009 photograph (above right) was taken the then owner, ADM, found its development plans thwarted by the fact that the Ham Commoners still had grazing rights over this area of concrete! That was resolved amicably to the benefit of the Commoners, but it did highlight the way that Healings gradually extended its land ownership on what was called ‘Knave’s Acre.’ What is now forgotten is that the Healing family decided to make use of the railway to build a steampowered flourmill. This was designed to crush imported American hard wheat, on what was formerly Tewkesbury’s Quay. The painting below is the only known picture of the river quay before Healings. In addition to the wharves there were other dock buildings: Rice’s Mill can be seen to the right in 1865 (above). There were also houses such as Quay House, occupied by mill foreman Moses Coopey until it was demolished in 1935. As one would expect in a harbour, there was a public house: the Admiral Benbow which enjoyed various names: 1670 the ‘Mermaid;’ to 1770 the ‘Star’ and then ‘Severn Trow.’ Next month we shall consider the public right of way which controls the entrance to any future car park.

LINE-UP FOR LAKEFEST TAKES SHAPE The musical line-up is taking shape for this year’s annual festival at Croft Farm, Bredon’s Hardwick, near Tewkesbury. Lakefest will take place over three days in the summer, from Friday 8th Sunday 10th until August. The Lakefest team is really excited to finalise the headliners performing at this year’s festival. Lee Martin, Lakefest Organiser said “What a fantastic lineup! I am so excited that we have got such a great set of artists at this year’s festival. The wide selection of different acts from the 70s, 80s and 90s means there is for all ages to enjoy, making the festival family friendly which is what we are all about! There are still bands to be announced so watch this space for those, I cannot wait for August.” Headline bands already signed include The Lightning Seeds. Ian Broudie’s band were at the forefront of the Brit Pop movement, but became household names after penning the 1996 England football anthem ‘Three Lions.’ Classic punk rockers Buzzcocks will also be there, as will Shed Seven - who had fourteen UK hits in the
1990s. Doctor & The Medics are performing too: they are perhaps best remembered for their international No. 1 single ‘Spirit in the Sky.’

TEWKESBURY PARK SQUASH JUNIORS PERFORM WELL 78 children, their parand ents coaches made their way to the Riverside Squash Club in Gloucester on the weekend of 7th, 8th & 9th March for the Cadbury Squash Tournament sponsored for the 20th year by Mrs A Cadbury OBE, JP, DL. There were boys and girls events for under 11, 13, 15, 17, 19. Juniors from Tewkesbury Park Squash Club played extremely well over the weekend and they managed to bring home some trophies - Hannah Ballard GU19 winner, Ashley Worrell BU17 runnerup, Robbie Hardwick BU13 winner and Erin Hunt GU11 runner-up. HISTORIC FRUIT BOWL RETURNS TO CANADA

DON’T WASTE MONEY ON RE-FELTING A piece of china at a recent Church Street Auction sale has been repatriated to Canada. The fruit bowl, commissioned by the Canadian Pacific Rail Company, was bought by local photographer, Jack Boskett, who put the item on the internet. After a flurry of interest, the dish was sold for a large undisclosed sum to a shipping collector who is involved at the Columbia British Maritime Museum. The piece was identical to the type used on the Canadian Pacific ocean liner Empress of Ireland which sank on 29th May 1914, the number of those killed is considered to be the largest Canadian maritime accident in peacetime. It will be on display at the 100th anniversary of the sinking between the 29th April to 29th September. It dates to approximately 1910 on the ship but the bowl was proba-
bly made around the region of 1872 looking at the makers mark on th rear. It is currently in Canada on the way to the new owner.

BEANS TALK Pupils from Year Two at Mitton Manor School provided the legwork in transporting a massive knitted beanstalk from the Roses Theatre to the Church in Baptist Station Road. The beanstalk had been adorning the foyer and bar of the Roses Theatre to tie in with the recent pantomime. The creation of the knitted giant, was a special project created by community builder Jane Griffiths and involved
up to two hundred people in and around the town. The beanstalk measured a massive two hundred and five meters and later it was divided up into two metre lengths.
They will be sewn together to make blankets by the K2Toys Charity Knitting Group for the village of Hope and Grace Ordman Charity in Tanzania.
TREE PLANTING BY LOCAL BRANCH OF WI The ladies of Kemerton womens Institute commemorated the Queens Diamond Jubillee with the planting of a Crab apple tree by the cross in the village recently. Albeit a little late, the event was attended by WI President Jeanette Way and the County Chairman Anne Turner, marking another event in traditional village life.

BACK TO THE BLUEBELLS There is hardly a more stunning sight in the British Countryside than a woodland carpeted with Spring flowers. This month and into May, wild bluebells will be at their best, writes Jack B. Walker. Locally there is no better spectacle than in Beckford Coppice - and this walk has proved one of the most popular I have ever undertaken for Tewkesbury Direct.

Park in the lane at the side of the Yew Tree Inn at Conderton. The village is also accessible by the 540 bus from Tewkesbury (except Sundays and certain bank holidays). Walk up the lane, passing an interesting
old orchard. As the road bears left, carry on straight ahead up the rough track which leads on to Bredon Hill. (1). At the edge of the wood with a gate and barn ahead of you, keep on the stony track as it bears right and sharply

Chartered Veterinary Physiotherapist, Eleanor Clarke, is now running a veterinary physiotherapy clinic alongside the Folly Gardens team. Eleanor qualified as human physio in 1998, from Sheffield University and completed her Post Graduate Diploma in Veterinary Physiotherapy at the Royal Veterinary College in 2001. Eleanor has worked locally for many years, mainly treating dogs, cats and horses and has been a great help to many of our own vets’ and nurses’ animals. Physiotherapy works best when used in conjunction with Veterinary medicine. So if your pet has suffered with any of the problems listed right, then a chat to one of our vets and an assessment and treatment with Eleanor can be of great benefit in their recovery. Many insurance companies will also pay for a Chartered Veterinary Physiotherapist too.
What does an assessment entail? Initial assessments take 45 minutes. They include taking a full history, followed by static, dynamic and palpatory assessments, to identify and treat primary and secondary problems. A physiotherapist works with animals to restore normal soft tissue length and movement patterns, to alleviate pain and gait abnormalities. An exercise/rehabilitation programme will then be created to allow the effects of physiotherapy and veterinary treatments to be maximised.

Cross over the next stile, near a high stone wall, and walk ahead to reach the lane, turn left and walk back to Conderton.

He has a specialist interest in Advanced Pain Management and is qualified to use Animal Acupuncture to treat acute and chronic pain in small animals such as cats, dogs and rabbits. Dev is performing acupuncture on an average of two pets per day: mainly cats and dogs with muscular-skeletal problems or conditions such as arthritis. Pain relief results in over 95% of cases which compares to a success rate of 60% when using drugs alone. It is often possible to wean some animals off their medication, or at least reduce their reliance upon it. Modern Western Acupuncture treats the root of the problem - the needles used are very fine so cause no pain. Treatment is tailored to each individual animal but often starts with a course of four weekly sessions. In order to maximise the healing process, regular sessions of physiotherapy plus Omega 3 Fish oils and Glucosamine are often recommended, all of which can be covered by Pet Insurance Plans.

upwards. (2). As the route levels out, there are good views to the towards the right Cotswold Hills and the Vale of Gloucester. On reaching the cross tracks (3), turn right to walk down the hill along a well-walked sandy path known locally as the Yellow Brick Road. The open fields on the right are strewn with limestones which often contain small fossils. At the next cross tracks (4), take the path on your left which leads into the woods. You will walk past a small plantation behind an electric fence, necessary to protect the growing trees from the resident fallow deer population. Follow the path down to the stream and cross the footbridge. This section of Beckford Coppice is famous for its bluebells: please keep to the trail to protect them. Follow the path up the bank and through the woods and cross over a stile. (5). Turn right and walk along the edge of the wood, to reach a small gate.

One of the organisers, Geoff Pope, said: “To a very appreciative audience, Jessy Lee, Mike Kean-Price (Town Crier), Angie Pope and Penelope Tubbs read Laurie's poetry and selected pieces from his books to great applause. “The readings were then followed by Johnny Coppin featuring Laurie's words put to music and also singing some of his own songs he has written and included on his new CD 'Borderland'. “Jessy Lee was able to tell us about life with her dad, reading some of her own and her mother's

Eli is the constant character throughout the story. In 1839, aged just 13, he is kidnapped by native Americans who kill his mother and sister. We follow Eli's life as a native, where he learns tribal skills and lives a protected life as the chief favours him, while other white people live in enslaved existence. The second strand of the story is told in diary form by Peter, Eli's middle son; and the final strand by Jeannie his great granddaughter. It is Eli's long successful life, however, that threads the storyline together. Leaving the Indian tribal life when disease desecrates his new friends and family, he returns south and has trouble reintegrating into white life. He becomes a hard nosed rancher with a thriving cattle business, but when the Texas oil boom starts he profits from this to the detriment of the environmental wellbeing of his land. This causes family angst especially with son, Peter, who is a die hard cattleman. Their conflicts are recorded in Peter's diary as is his own personal life which is the skeleton on which the denouement of this book hangs. Jeannie, the sole survivor recounts her story as she endures old age and incapacity looking back on life where she takes over the business and expands it, while her private family life is less successful.

We have already taken in our first fox cub of the year (March 16th) and we also have baby squirrels in care. Any day now the flood gates will open and we will be inundated with baby birds and mammals all needing intensive, round-theclock care, feeding and cleaning by our dedicated team of staff and volunteers. It is a very busy and often stressful time for all of us. The year so far has been the quietest for several years which has surprised me given the mild winter we have experienced. In January, only 82 casualties were admitted to Vale. In 2013 we treated 113 patients and the year before that the figure was 137. February 2014 saw 67 animals coming through our doors, 47 less than 2 years before (2012). It is difficult to be sure of the reasons for so few casualties coming in but it does concern us as the number of animals admitted to wildlife centres often reflects the overall situation out in the wild so do these figures show that more species are in decline? It will be interesting to see how the coming months, with the breed-
ing season for most wildlife just beginning, pan out. I mentioned our first fox cub earlier. She was found in the road outside a house and is far

too young to be out and about as we estimated her to be only about 14 days old, weighing a mere 210gms. Her eyes had just opened and at this stage she should still be warmly tucked up with mum and her siblings. We can tell from her appearance that she is obviously the runt of the litter and there is a possibility that she has been intentionally ‘dumped’ by the vixen because she wasn’t thriving and possibly has other issues going on which may become apparent in the weeks to come. Instinct will tell the parent that there is something wrong and, to protect the health and future welfare of the rest of the litter, a sick or
birds and, although it appears harsh, it is the best way of preserving the healthy members of the family. The baby squirrels that we are caring for, including the latest tiny addition weighing a mere 20gms, have come in because the trees that their dreys (the name for a squirrels nest) were in were cut down. At this time of year, especially as birds are
now busily nest-building too, great care must be taken when carrying out any tree or hedge management and ideally planned work any should be postponed until the autumn. If there is no alternative than to carry out the work in the spring or summer, it is vitally that you important ensure there is nothing nesting before carrying out the work. Besides the obvious risk to the animals living there, you could well be committing a criminal under the offence Wildlife and Countryside Act which could lead to prosecution. And now – the rest! What was the point, not to mention the considerable expense, of moving the traffic lights 50 metres further up the lower High Street, narrowing the road by 4 metres and losing a number of valuable parking spaces into the bargain? The ‘pavement extensions’ at various intervals have cost us 3 parking spaces each, just as the alterations to the corner into Sun Street have. The busiest road in town, now much narrower, with the addition of obstructive central traffic islands, have made life much more awkward for trucks and buses. So, as it’s now impossible to pass a truck that’s unloading, yet more parking space has been given over to ‘Loading Only’. Pretty it all maybe, but practical it’s not! It has removed valuable free parking spaces right where we need them most – for the ‘quick in and out’ type of shopping so many of us do. We initially lost conservatively – 38 spaces; parked tidily, that figure rises to 44. Add in the new loading bays and that figure rises to 58. It is claimed that parking

䡵 Anthony Stockman hasn’t been compromised, because additional spaces have been created elsewhere. What 58? Tell us where they are then, because I’ve only found a token few! And in any case, if I want to nip into the bank, or Smiths, I don’t want to have to park down by the Fire station and leg it back in the pouring rain. Another problem: These ‘pavement extensions’ are sharp cornered and not ‘rounded’, so you’re far more likely to curb your wheel(s) as you park, or alternately bash the offside on one of the islands in the middle. Just take a look at the tyre marks on all the new bits and the narrow section approaching the lights down by Smiths. And these extensions have now been adopted as additional crossings by all and sundry, producing several shunts in the process. So now, many frequent shoppers no longer want to go into the High Street, with the inevitable loss of revenue for shop-keepers. ‘Joe public’ doesn’t want to park in the expensive local ‘pay & displays, they’ll go to Cheltenham, where the retail parks are free. We liked the High Street as it was, so please remove the central islands and pavement extensions and give us back our parking. 䡵 Please note: the opinions expressed in this article and the first part which appeared in our January issue, are the personal views of Anthony Stockman.

HUSKYFEST 2014 LADY RUNNERS OF TEWKESBURY
NEW 'BEGINNERS COURSE'
The 'Lady Runners' beginners course is designed for Tewkesbury women, aimed in particular to those who are new to the sport. Get fit in time for the Race For Life event this June!
This is the second year of Huskyfest held on the 22nd and 23rd march at Croft farm Bredons Hardwick ,it is the biggest event of it's kind in the UK. The weekend is awash with activities and entertainment including working dog sessions, dog behaviourist, fun race, novelty dog show as well as activities for children. Saturday night was a traditional pig roast followed by the Huskyfest Band. Camping, log cabins
and pods were available to rent and dogs go free. Croft Farm is an excellent host site, with an enclosed off lead area and large cafe and bar and plenty of space for all those dogs. Huskyfest 2013 saw over 100 dogs and their owners take to the trails. This year was no different - with a high standard of working dogs.
Run by Debbie Hawtin, Maria Dispirito and Julie McGeever, who are all qualified Run Running England Leaders. The leaders will focus on teaching group members to run correctly and safely - and keep it fun! The aim of the 10 week course is to help women be able to run three miles upon completion. SEVERN UNIT MVS HAVE BUSY END TO WINTER BRIDGE CLEARING TO BOAT BUILDING When the floods eventually subsided members of Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service were able to take their Gemini inflatable down to King John's Bridge to do their usual job of clearing all the flood debris and logs which were stuck around the arches of the bridge and obstructing the flow of the River Avon.

Arts Week Marvel A large wall Mosaic depicting the spirit of the community has been created by pupils, and parent staff helpers to celebrate Week at Arts Tewkesbury Church of England School. Made up of thousands of small mosaic pieces, the work was divided into three sections, and children in small groups took a share of laying in the pieces. The work was completed and mounted on the wall within a
staggering four days, and this was only one of sixteen projects that took place that week. Depicting many different aspects of community life, the designs were by the children, including, swimming, horseriding, music, technology and as a centrepiece the schools' Candle of Hope. The making of this great piece was filmed and shown on a big screen at the school by pupil, Henry McMahon.

Making sure your home is secure By the time you read this article the clocks will have gone forward and the evenings will be getting lighter. It is also a good time to review the security of your property, writes Tewkesbury Police Sgt Henry Wright. I have put together some tips to make your home more secure paying attention to different areas where your premises may be vulnerable. 䡵 FRONT DOOR: a Yale type lock on its own is not sufficient and most companies insurance insist on a mortice lock. • The door should be fitted with a 5 lever mortice deadlock. • Ensure that the frame is strong and will support the door, hinges and lock. • Make sure the door is suitable for external use and is a minimum of 45mm thick. • Letterboxes should have an internal cover plate. • For additional safety and security fit a spy hole and door chain. 䡵 PATIO DOORS: these have been the point of entry for the majority of local burglaries follow these tips for added security: • Unless the doors are fitted with a multi-locking system, it is best to fit extra locks. These are fitted on the bottom

Here are some good reasons why it pays to be a Non Smoker 1. Think of those who care about you and love you very much. They want you fit and well. 2. Tobacco and tobacco smoke are two of the leading causes of deadly cancer. 3. Smoking increases the risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. 4. There is growing evidence that smoking can lead to AMD (age-related macular degeneration), a degenerative condition occurring at the back of the eye resulting in blindness. 5. Smoking increases your risk of developing cataracts. 6. Smokers may develop complications associated colon disease. 7. Smoking can suppress the body's immune function. 8. Smoking contributes to chronic sinusitis. 9. Tobacco worsens gum disease. 10. Tobacco can cause haemorrhoids to flare up. 11. April 2014 Are you parking somewhere you shouldn’t? Parking is an issue for many residents on the estate and it is a topic that the parish council receives a lot of correspondence about. Whilst the access roads are perhaps the obvious place to park, there are other areas of the estate that may not be and we ask that you be considerate to other residents in choosing where to park. For houses without driveways, it is quite common to have designated parking spaces in small courtyards or in tarmacked areas adjacent to the houses or in some circumstances their garages. These spaces are actually owned by the householders and are not available for general use. Just because no one is parked there doesn’t mean it’s necessarily free and you could technically be parking on land owned by other people. House-holders are quite within their rights to ask you to move, so please take care not to park on land that is owned by other householders. As a general rule of thumb, courtyards and areas next to garages will have designated parking spaces. Some will be clearly marked but others may not be. Help your fellow residents by not parking in these areas unless you know you have the right to. Some residents find themselves unable to park in their own designated spaces or blocked in by less caring drivers. Our guidance would always be that if you are asked to move your car then there is probably sound grounds for doing so and you should look to move your car elsewhere as soon as possible.
Traffic Calming If you have a good memory, you may recall that back in December 2012 we were improvements. The main concern was speeding and the overwhelming response was the desire to tackle this at both entrances to the estate at Snowdonia Road and you may feel that “SLOW” has become synonymous with the rate of progress made on this project rather than anything to do with traffic speed. hopeful of working with the County Council this year to get the traffic calming that the parish needs and deserves.

ANYONE FOR CRICKET? The new cricket season gets underway this month - and there are plenty of clubs in the area with opportunities for players at both senior and junior level to get involved with the game. Tewkesbury Cricket Club - which plays at the Swilgate Ground in Gander Lane - is a family orientated club which caters for players of all abilities and ages. The club runs three Saturday teams, one Sunday XI, a midweek XI and junior teams from under 11 to 16. This season the first and second XI will play in the West Of England Premier League. The firsts will compete in the Glos/Wilts Division and the second XI will be in the reserve division. Overbury Cricket Club - whose lovely ground is pictured above - is also encouraging junior and senior players to try their hand. It has excellent facilities on the lower slopes of Bredon Hill and plays in the Cotswold Hills league. The excellent website www.play-cricket.com has details of all clubs in the Tewkesbury area.
