Friday night’s headliner will be announced soon, and Miss Moneypennies Orchestra will bring the event to a close on the Sunday evening. The breathtaking location plays host to a happy vibe, with all ages coming together to enjoy good music. The action takes place across several stages, with both camping and boutique camping available in the Deer Park. Organiser Lee Martin said: “We’re feeling incredibly happy with

the reaction to this year’s announcements. “We like to think we’ve curated the stages to ensure that there’s something for everyone in the mix, and can’t wait to see all the plans come together in the Deer Park. “We love what we do, and the local people who support us and have happily followed us from Croft Farm over to Eastnor represent where it all began and how it is about a community, with

us building to grow on the ticket-buyers’ experience each year.” More than music, Lakefest offers a whole mini-holiday experience for its visitors. Most choose to arrive on Thursday and leave on Monday, taking in the whole Lakefest weekend and all that it has to offer. Children can be kept busy with the activities in the craft area, and there’s also a food village, market, and bars.

For once the cover of a book actually seems to bear some relevance to the contents. Although if you want a book about wolves, this is not the one, then I would suggest Sarah Hall "Wolf Border" which is a really great novel about the reintroduction of wolves into the border country in the UK. This American novel, by a new author has been garlanded which much praise, and was nominated for the Man Booker prize last year, getting onto the shortlist. Teenager Linda lives beside a lake in Northern Minnesota where she has grown up and knows the waters like the back of hand, hence the cover. An only child brought up initially in a hippie community that disintegrated leaving her alone with a mother who she has trouble connecting with, and her father where there is a closer bond. New neighbours move into a new shoreline house which they can see from their land, and Linda forms a close connection to Patra and her 4 year old son Paul who welcome her into their home and she helps by babysitting. The other strand of the book is Linda's school where she is seen as being a bit of an odd ball, and it is a school project she undertakes for one of her teachers on "The History of Wolves" which gives this novel it's title. The teacher Mr Grierson does not remain at the school long as he is charged with possessing child pornography and while

he is not a constant presence in the story, he is a recurring memory for Linda. The main story is about Patra and her scientologist husband Leo Gardiner, who is away working in Hawaii before returning to his family, then the easy life that Linda has had with her new neighbours changes. She still helps out, but you feel atmospheric undulations as the book advances through the spring season into summertime, the lake coming alive with trippers after the coldness of the northern winter. The events of this spring/summer are looked back on, and we experience Linda as an adult reflecting on this adolescent experience. Her memories of injustices on her teacher, and her distance from her mother after her father dies, is mixed with recollections of the Gardiner family, and the events during and following a weekend away in Duluth. These have formed Linda into who she is, and how she looks back on her teenage years.

The first train in nearly sixty years steamed into the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railwayâ€™s restored Broadway Station last month. Thanks to the tireless work of volunteers over many years, a further stretch of the line has opened, linking Broadway with Cheltenham Racecourse, fourteen miles away. Public passenger services commence at Easter.

International flavour for Tewkesbury ‘Folk Treble’

A special 'Folk Treble' concert will be held in Tewkesbury’s historic 15th century Old Baptist Chapel on Thursday 12th April. Worcestershire based singer-songwriters Colin Pitts and Mike Weaver will be joined by Russian folk singer Daria Kulesh for a special joint concert from 7.15pm. Daria's Russian and Ingush roots are reflected in her music, intertwined with multicultural influences she has experienced on her turbulent and exciting journey through life. Her award-winning album Long Lost Home was listed as “haunting and enigmatic” by the Times, and voted 2017 album of the year by Laurel Canyon Music. Mike Harding described Daria’s latest single as “one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in years.” Her music is extensively played on folk radio stations, as well as being featured on BBC Radio 2. Much of Colin Pitts' music has been inspired by the Vale of Evesham, where he lives, and many of his songs have become folk club standards in this region.

Daria Kulesh, Colin Pitts and Mike Weaver He is renowned for his powerful yet sensitive songwriting, and relaxed performance style. Colin has performed at clubs, village halls and festivals all over the UK and has also been on many local radio shows as well as a performance on BBC Radio 2. His most recent CD, Where The River Bends, was recorded in Bredon and released two years ago Mike Weaver - who lives near Tewkesbury is best known for his self-penned songs which “exude beautiful harmonies, clear story telling and a passion for people.” He returned to writing

and performing in 2013, and since then has released three CDs, songs from which have received airplay on folk radio stations all over the world. The music starts at 7.30pm, with doors open from 7.15pm. with John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society What a wonderful response from former High School Girls for the article on the Swilgate Tennis Courts, writes John Dixon. Val and Jannette confirmed the location and joy of playing there - but the latter and Sheila took me one stage further with this photo of the Council’s hard Tennis Courts - which had a totally different view of the Abbey. Bring your own balls and rackets! The courts were evidently hard enough to support, now, the bungalow of Les Stamp, the Campsite Manager. Then 1951: I learned that these courts were located behind the Gloucester Road Car Park and were opened for the Festival of Britain. Still there at least in 1967, leisure facilities had expanded. Then 1957: Mooted in 1935, planned in 1951 and approved in 1955, the infamous ‘Birdbath’ was opened by the Council ñ it looked cold on the opening day at Easter! Was a Putting Green provided between the courts and the pool? Now 2018: it is a Motorhome, Static Campsite and Caravan Park and the Office is still using the pool’s buildings? Les pointed out that the slip way used to service boat repairs and sales. The more one learns, the more there is to learn!

Our nomination is a thank you for the work we have done getting the reserve to the condition it is in so far, however the management of Tewkesbury Nature reserve do not rest on their laurels, we are in the process of putting together a plan to further enhance the site to better visitors, including the wildlife’s, enjoyment. The reserve occupies 40 hectares of land to the south-east of Tewkesbury, bordered by the A38 Tewkesbury by-pass to the south and east; the A438 (from Tewkesbury town centre to M5 Junction 9) to the north, and the Stonehills and Priors Park residential estates to the west. “Up the Float and Down the Cut” was the intriguing title of the talk given to Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service and guests by Mr. Roy Thomas of Twyning. The “Float” refers to Bristol’s Floating Harbour and “The Cut” is the Feeder Canal that links the Floating Harbour to the River Avon - a subject which Roy had researched in great depth. Head of Unit Nic Price said “We were very grateful to Roy for coming and giving us this most interesting talk which was illustrated by his many excellent photographs. In 1809 Bristol was transformed by the opening of the Floating Harbour when the tidal river was impounded to allow ships to remain afloat all the time and

helped Bristol to grow into a busy commercial port.” With the lighter evenings Severn Unit will soon be training out on the water again on a Monday nights and will

RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker

SPRINGTIME ON ALDERTON HILL Although steep in parts with some muddy footpaths, this walk into the woods on Alderton Hill, is very rewarding when the woodlands are springing back into life, writes Jack B. Walker. Park on the outskirts of the village, if there is space, near the recreation ground. If not, leave the car in the village, with respect to local residents. The first part of the route follows a section of the long distance ‘Winch-combe Way,’ so it is well signposted. From the Beckford Road, take the path north along the side of a field towards a gap, and then follow the Winchcombe Way marker diagonally left across a field to a stile in a hedge (1). Keep the same line across the next field to another stile and over a footbridge, taking the route towards the corner of the woods which are clearly visible on Alderton Hill (2). As the hedge gets closer, look for the stile on the right, go over it and across towards the stile into the woods (3). Follow the green lane through the trees as it skirts around the base of the hill. Deer are abundant here, in a reserve well

managed by the Dumbleton Estate. Roe, fallow and muntjac are all resident here. In recent years Red Kites have also been spotted here. Red Kites were at their most vulnerable in the 1900s, when only twelve birds survived in the Welsh mountains. Thanks to the Brecon Beacons National Park and the establishment of

the Welsh Kite Trust, a conservation programme ensured the birds protection - and slowly they began to thrive again and move eastwards across the country. Pairs were first spotted in this area about ten years ago. They are recognisable by their forked tail feathers At the end of the wood, go through the gate and across a meadow to reach a five bar gate with a stile beside it (4). Do not head towards the farm, or take the footpath ahead - but turn right and follow the blue bridleway markers up a steep slope towards

another five bar gate. Go through and back into the wood, following the bridleway as it continues to climb. This path can be very muddy after rain at this time of year - and the climb is fairly challenging! As the path levels out and a field becomes visible on your left, you may catch sight of the landmark Broadway Tower high on the Cotswold scarp to the east. Eventually the bridleway meets a lane coming up from Dumbleton. Turn right, and at the signpost follow the directions to Alderton (5). The steep descent takes you across a lane (6) and then down over a field with the hedge to your left. Go over a footbridge (7) and along the field boundary. Cross a stile into a paddock (8) and through a kissing gate into an alley, which brings you back into Alderton. At the road(9) go right, back to the car.

Distance: approx. 3.5 miles, some steep ascents.Paths can be muddy at times. Car Parking: lane side near the Recreation Ground or with care in Alderton village. This is the sixth year that the award-winning heritage railway will be staging the event (April 28th & 29th), and it promises to be the biggest and best yet. Event organiser, John Rogers, said: “We will be running three steam service trains each day at 45 minute intervals between Toddington and Cheltenham Racecourse. “Of course, the big news this year is that we will also be running from Toddington to Broadway, the first year that trains have reached the village since 1960. “Toddington Station will have the major display with many military and civilian vehicles together with period traders selling costume and clothing, etc. “The marquee will also be at Toddington and will have a full programme of events on both days and on Saturday evening it will host a 1940s swing dance band. “We will have a full size Spitfire replica in the car park and this will do engine runs every hour. If you wish, you can have your photo taken sitting in the cockpit; a small charge is made for this. “We have requested a visit from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Subject to weather and operation issues, they will be doing a fly-past over the line from Broadway to Winchcombe on Sunday afternoon. We will confirm over the tannoy if so, and what time they are going to be with us” There will be entertainment, re-enactors and period displays at all stations - including appearances from Winston Churchill, Field marshall Montgomery and film stars Laurel and Hardy. Visitors are recommended to park either in

BETTER TRAIN SERVICES FROM ASHCHURCH FOR TEWKESBURY A different and faster type of train is now operating train services from Ashchurch for Tewkesbury station on the route to Bristol, Bath and West Wiltshire. Refurbished and larger 90mph “Turbo Trains”, previously used on commuter services in the Thames Valley, are already replacing the smaller 75mph “Sprinter” trains formerly used on the route. Ken Radbourne, a retired rail manager, who is a chairman of the steering group of the Ashchurch, Tewkesbury and District Rail Promotion Group said “The introduction of these trains marks the beginning of a range of improvements to train services and facilities at the station. Not only do we have more comfortable trains but we are also looking forward to an increase in frequency of services on this route over the next couple of years.” The Group has a close working relationship with Great Western Railway (who provide most of the trains services at the station and also manage the facilities there), and has achieved some notable improvements at the station since their formation nine years ago, including the introduction of a direct early morning service to London on Mondays to Fridays, and increased car parking at the station. Most notable though, following pressure from the group, is the successful introduction last year of a member of staff based at the station to issue tickets to customers from 06.20 until 09.20 Mondays to Fridays. This has proved very popular as it avoids having to buy your ticket from the conductor on the train, and has allowed people to purchase tickets in advance if they wish. Services run direct from the station to a range of destinations, including Bath Spa, Salisbury Southampton and Weymouth. Fares are not as expensive as is often assumed. For example, an Off-Peak

Back in the Groove at Repair Café The vinyl revival continues, but rather than buy a new record player some people chose to revive a classic from the heyday of LPs and 45s. Stuart Dove brought his 1960’s Ferguson record player to March’s Repair Café. The player was in very good condition except that the record feed didn’t work and the sound came and went. It has been owned since 1968 by Stuart who bought it to play his favourite reggae and soul music, especially Wilson Picket and Otis Redding. Over the years it got put aside for newer technology – cassettes and CDs - but Stuart now want to bring back the real analogue sound of vinyl, and play the LPs he has stored all these years. Ferguson was a midrange home record player, mono speaker, mains power but portable, so you could take it to friends and share music. It wasn’t a bad player with a quality BSR deck. It had an auto feed. Records were stacked on a long spindle, and released into the platter when needed. The arm carrying the stylus (needle), swung across to the start of the record, then touched down softly into the groove. A bit clumsy, but it meant you didn’t have to change a single every 3 minutes. Back in this century, Café repairers Jamie and Cliff quickly rectified the auto-feed, which was sticky through lack of use but by closing time were still tracing a failing transistor which caused the sound to come and go. In the end, as they didn’t have a suitable transistor in stock, one of them took it home, and will return it to Stuart at the next Café meet. The March café also repaired a computer, clock, a couple of vacuum cleaners, clothes and fabric, sharpened blunt knives, renewed a socket

ABBEYFIELD TEWKESBURY LTD by Andrew Crowther, Chairman In Tewkesbury you cannot miss The Abbey, but nestling near the great Norman tower is Abbeyfield sheltered home for elderly residents. It has no connection with The Abbey. Abbeyfield is an international organisation set up in the 1950’s in Bermondsey, London by an ex-army major who realised that loneliness was a social ill. He invited lonely elderly residents to ‘ordinary homes in ordinary streets’ where they could have freedom to come and go, but were looked after by a housekeeper and given two meals a day. The original type of home is now found throughout the UK, over 350 of them run inde-

pendently of the Abbeyfield organisation, based in St Albans. The central organisation also runs 145 homes directly (there is one in Gloucester), some of which are care homes and some for residents with dementia. From the outset we received nothing but helpful advice after our move to a new property. Andy arranged for existing curtains to be altered quickly and to an excellent standard and then fitted them with great care. Appropriate new curtain poles were suggested and fitted, again with great care and efficiency. A new roman blind was also suggested for one window which is proving an excellent choice as Andy has an extensive range of fabrics so we could choose a perfect match. Nothing could be too much trouble, and everything was done efficiently and cheerfully, making our move to a new house much less stressful. We would recommend LASKEYS without hesitation.

This type of hound is bred for strong hunting instincts, great energy and like all scent hounds, for a very keen sense of smell, writes Nigel Sligh. There are different breeds of foxhound, each simply called Foxhound in their native countries. For many centuries English hunters preferred hunting large game, especially deer. It was considered beneath nobility to hunt fox, which was considered vermin. This task was left up to the common farmers, which they performed with dogs. It became evident that larger the pack of dogs, the more efficient the hunt. Most farmers, however, couldn’t afford to keep more than one or two hounds. To solve this they began pooling their dogs into larger packs and clearing out multiple farms on the same day. These hunts quickly turned into social events.

In the late 16th Century as a result of the depletion of deer in England, during the reign of Henry VIII, the nobility got more involved with fox hunting. Although the farmer’s hounds were successful, the nobility wanted to breed a specific dog for hunting foxes. The English foxhound was developed by a mixture of the Greyhound, for speed, the Fox terrier, for hunting instinct and the Old English Bulldog, for tenacity in the hunt. The Beagle, Harrier and Bloodhound may also have been part of the original mix.

In 1650, Robert Burke took his pack of English hounds to North America and they became the foundation for several strains of American foxhounds. George Washington bred his French foxhounds, Grand Bleu de Gascognes, with these lines to create the present day American foxhound. It is said the line of the Grand Bleu de Gascogne or Gascony Blue, is responsible for their musical bay or bark. This type of foxhound is taller and lighter than the English foxhound. Twinkles Shares Some Easter Fun Twinkles the HUGE Easter Bunny had been hopping all around Tewkesbury causing chaos not only by setting up an easter egg trail for children to follow in local shops during the Easter Holidays but being mischievous too. The bunny’s exploits have been filmed and over the Easter Holidays a film will be published each day on “Tewkesbury Noticeboard” Facebook sharing clues for the children to follow the easter egg trail. Children can join in by purchasing an activity pack, which will include a pebble to paint, the Easter egg trail instructions, easter eggs and an invitation for the children are welcome to come along to the Children’s easter disco on 6th April and throw some shapes on the dance floor with Twinkles. The March meeting was certainly interesting! Our guest was Maria Morelli who came to instruct us in the art of belly dancing. Suitably attired, our lesson began – we then found out that our shimmying and figures of 8 certainly needed working on. Thanks to Maria we eventually completed a full dance routine. We don’t think we are quite good enough for the stage yet, though. That said, we all had lots of laughs and certainly a very enjoyable evening. Maria then gave us a sample of her dances and showed us some exquisite dance costumes, all hand sewn. Our next meeting will be on Monday 9th April, 7.30pm at Mitton Manor Primary School – Colour Analysis with Judith Mercer. New members very welcome. Sunday will see the new KataKanu Boat races in the morning and River Parade themed on “Royal Regatta” in the afternoon. Tewkesbury’s BIG Weekend is organised by a small group of like minded individuals who came together to provide a Festival that is mainly free or good value for the good people of Tewkesbury and surrounding area. It stimulates business for the Town and brings the Riverside and Town together. This year we are producing a different walk around some of our famous “Alleyways” to link the two. POSITIVE THINKING with local therapist and counsellor David Slater I want you to think about the experience of two brothers who lived on adjoining farms and fell into conflict, writes David Slater. It was the first major disagreement in 25 years of farming side by side that they had ever experienced. Then, all of a sudden, the long collaboration came apart at the seams. It began with a small misunderstanding and it grew into a gigantic disagreement, and finally it exploded into an exchange of bitter words followed by months of uncomfortable silence. One morning there was a knock on John's door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter's toolbox. “I'm looking for a few days work," he said. “I was wondering if you might have a few jobs here and there. Could I help you with anything?” "Yes. You are just the person that I need,” said the older brother. “I do have a job for you. Look across the valley at that farm. That's my neighbour. In fact, it's my younger brother. Last week there was a meadow between us and he took his bulldozer and dug out that massive ditch to sepa-

BUILDING BRIDGES rate our properties. “Well, he may have done this to spite me, but I'll go one better. He needn't think that he is going to get away with that at all. No one messes about with me ! “See that pile of timber by the barn? I want you to build me a fence an 7-foot fence - so I won't need to see his pathetic little farm anymore. It will teach him a lesson, at least!” The carpenter said, “I think I understand the situation. Show me the nails and the post hole digger and I'll be able to do a job that pleases you.” The older brother had to go to town to a meeting that day, so he helped the carpenter get the materials ready and then he was off for the rest of the day. The carpenter worked hard all that day measuring, sawing, and nailing. When the farmer returned home it was near to getting dark and the carpenter was only now beginning to clear up his materials after having completed his work . Now this is where you will be surprised

just as was the farmer! The farmer's eyes opened wide, his jaw dropped. There was no fence there at all. There was a bridge - a bridge stretching from one side of the ditch to the other! A fine piece of woodworking - handrails and all - and the neighbour, his younger brother, was coming across, his hand outstretched and a broad smile on his face. He called across “You are quite an exceptional guy to build this bridge after all I've said and done. It is more than I deserve. I just cant thank you enough. We belong together!” The two brothers stood at each end of the bridge, and then they met in the middle, taking each other's hand. They shook hands warmly and then hugged each other tightly. No animosity at all! They turned to see the carpenter lift his toolbox on his shoulder. “No, wait! Stay a few days, please. There are loads of jobs that we can get you to do for us,” said the older brother. “I'd love to stay on,”

the carpenter said, “but I have many more bridges to build.” Why tell you this

story? Well, it reminds us of an important choice that we do all face at various stages in our life. Everyday we have the choice of building fences or bridges.
