When the children of Mitton Manor Pre-School Group in Tewkesbury heard about the plight of a young girl living in poverty in Africa, they decided last month’s Red Nose Day would provide an ideal opportunity to help. Angela Walker, a play leader at the group, told Tewkesbury Direct: “We have been learning about a young girl called Ronika, who is a four years old and lives in a slum in Kenya. “Ronika must help her family every day by keeping the shed that they live in clean and tidy; if not Ronika could easily become ill from the dirt and germs that are rife in the slum. “The children have been so lovely thinking of ways they could help Ronika. They did jobs at home to raise money. Tasks they undertook were laying the table, hoovering, dusting, put-

ting the rubbish out, making beds, putting their toys away, dressing and undressing them selves. “On Red Nose Day children came in fancy dress or wore something red. We had red play activities and the children made jam on toast, red nose biscuits, and
red jelly for snack time. “We played stick the red dot on the clown, dancing games and to finish with the children could pay 50p to throw a custard pie at me! “In total we made £160 - a fantastic effort by the very young” MORE PICTURES can be seen on page 22.

Last month Fiona Munt-Whittle, swimming instructor and director of Aquatots, organised a swimming reunion for a group of children who originally met at the poolside in Tewkesbury over ten years ago. The children's parents enrolled them into baby swimming classes run by Aquatots - and from that initial chance meeting the families have kept in constant contact with each other and Fiona, their first swimming instructor. Fiona, who lives in Twyning with her family, set up the business after the birth of her first child and has now been teaching babies and young children to swim for over twenty five years. Local Businesses View Plans For Former Mill Site Members of the local business community gathered at Theoc House last month to share views on the future proposals for the redevelopment of the former Healings’ Flour Mill. which is likely to be demolished due to issues of instability, as well as a number of listed buildings in Quay Street. Peter Burford has over forty years’ experience in surveying and property development, having been involved in the successful Gas Street Basin project in Birmingham. Subject to talks with the Environment Agency and planning authority, Peter confirmed that the development will include residential units as well as providing additional town centre car parking. The plan is to revitalise the riverside with improved mooring facilities, and includes the provision of an additional footbridge to enhance the riverside walk experience for visitors to the town. Peter’s vision for the site also includes the provision of larger retailer units which are not currently available in the town centre. It is hoped these will attract new retailers into Tewkesbury. The addition of a riverside restaurant is also a possibility. The meeting was organised by the Discover Tewkesbury retailer team.

Despite having to deal with seven floods in the last twelve months, and well as recent bad weather, the Friends of Victoria Pleasure Gardens have erected three Jubilee Arches in Tewkesbury’s splendid riverside park. Dawn Hunt, chair of ‘the Friends’ said: “We hope to have commemorative plaques alongside each of the arches installed within the next few weeks. “All the people or companies that donated towards the arches are listed on a 'Roll of Honour' which is currently on display in the Town Hall. “To celebrate the final two arches going up we have decided to hold an afternoon event on Sunday 22nd April at 2.00pm, when we will begin this year's digging
and tiding up. “Everyone is invited to come along and meet for refreshments and hopefully join in. We can provide all the tools required, as long as they bring their own supply of gardening gloves and energy!” On Sunday 30th June at 2.00pm the gardens will be officially opened at the annual garden party. “This year the Friends of Victoria Gardens are celebrating their fifth birthday, so it will be a little bit special, with a brass band, morris
dancers, teas and ice creams. “ said Dawn. The Victoria Pleasure Gardenss were created in 1897, alongside the Mill Avon, to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. The Friends group was founded in 2007 after the gardens were devastated by floods, with the aim of restoring them to their former glory. CLEAR POLICY Steve Barker, from Tewkesbury-based insurance specialists Coversure, has stepped forward to clarify the position regarding confusion over excess payments with certain motoring policies. “Generally speaking, customers are only liable to pay the excess if a claim is made on their vehicle,” said Steve. “In recent times, some insurance providers have been changing their policies to include third party excess. “Why? Perhaps to be able to offer the lower monthly rates customers look for, to win business in a very competitive market, or even to appear to be value for money.” An example of this was found on one of industry publication Insurance Age’s forums shows a customer who took out a motor insurance policy with a £3,000 excess, based on the premise that the monthly payments were very affordable and allowed him to maintain his lifestyle. The customer then had a minor accident, where the only damage to the car was a broken number plate. It later became apparent that the other car had been written off,
leaving the customer with fourteen days to pay the £3,000 excess bill (with immediate interest) which he couldn’t afford. The reason this happened was again due to the customer not reading the terms then basing their decision solely on the monthly payments. The lesson to be learnt from this therefore is, if it seems like there should be a catch, there normally is one. Steve Barker warns about reliance on the internet for purchasing cheap car insurance “Customers need to fully understand the conditions imposed upon the policyholder this is difficult if they choose to buy insurance online. “By dealing with a local insurance broker, conditions like this are fully explained to the customer and appropriate cover found and a price that is affordable, but without the nasty surprises should a customer need to make a claim.”

The historic church of St Nicholas at Ashchurch is being opened up to the public from April until September. Visitors will have an opportunity to look round the Grade II* listed building between 10am and 4pm every Thursday. Situated just off the A46, St Nicholas was consecrated in 1121 and was ordinally an outreach church from Tewkesbury Abbey. Services were conducted by monks until the dissolution of the monastery in 1539. Spokesperson Sandra Terry said: “We wanted to give people the opportunity to share this historic building, so it was decided to open it every Thursday so that people can come and look round and appreciate its beauty. There’s a mix of new and well-established gardens, highlights of which include the Old Rectory next to St Mary’s Church, and the ancient moated gardens of Gubberhill farm in Ripple. The Church will also house a floral display. Cream teas will be available at the Railway Inn in Ripple and light lunches will be served in
Uckinghall. In addition there will be cake and plant stalls. The cost is

“It opens doors to other restaurants down there that are interested in using us.” A key part of the deal, thought to be worth around £250,000 a year is the potential longterm supply of the butchers Longhorn steak burgers. The burgers are made with steak trim and seasoning. They start at 78p each and about 2000 are sold each week. The Fifteen deal, which includes two or three weekly deliveries to the restaurant, will allow Martin to double his heard of Longhorn cattle to 200 and pro-
vides an opportunity to build further outbuildings and invest in new equipment. It will also help him in the future to open a farm shop, subject to planning permission, to add to his farm and cutting plant. The cutting plant currently has a viewing area where customers who visit the site can see the meat being prepared. The beef, a key meat for the business is dry matured for between 28 and 31 days and is particularly popular because of its fat cover. The beef comes from Martin’s own farm as well as others in the
Cotswolds. Martin’s Meats, which was set up in 2003, employs nine staff and supplies restaurants across the county. These include Number Five in North Street, Winchcombe, The Plough at Ford, Brasserie Blanc in Cheltenham and the Horse and Groom at Bourton on the Hill. The marking of seventy five years in business would be a momentous occasion for any company owner, but none more so than for Harry, Roger and George Workman. Their company, Cotteswold Dairy Ltd, started its life as a thirty gallon milk round, purchased by Harry Workman on May 1st 1938. Harry is now 95 years young, and there are not many companies where the founder can celebrate 75 years of business. The company gradually built and grew due to the hard work and dedication of Harry, and of his son Roger when he joined the company in 1963. In 1991, George Workman (Roger’s son and current managing director), joined the company as well continuing the family name and dedicating himself to growing the business further. 75 years since delivering its first pint, the company is one of the largest independent dairies in the country. Amid a competitive market and a troubled industry, it continues to grow day by day. The dairy currently processes around 70 million litres of milk per annum and prides itself on quality. The Workman family put this down to long-term partnerships which have been forged and maintained with local farmers, from whom milk is sourced. The loyalty and dedication of the Cotteswold’s staff also plays a major part in the continued success of the company. Back in the early days milk was processed by a handful of people and delivered around Tewkesbury in a Morris 8 van. Now a workforce of around 320 is employed in the Tewkesbury processing plant and at seven distribution depots across England and Wales. This ensures the milk is of the highest quality and is delivered efficiently and reliably to a loyal customer base, which includes independent milkmen, schools, nursing homes, village stores and garages. And, of course, Cotteswold’s own invaluable doorstep delivery service.

The Tewkesbury Mustard Company was founded by Robin and colleague Sam Ramsey last year - although Robin has been making the traditional ‘hot stuff’ for over ten years. Tewkesbury Jobcentre Plus is set to relocate to Tewkesbury Borough Council’s offices in an exciting move that will add another important public service to the range of organisations operating from within the building. The job centre, which is currently located on Church Street in Tewkesbury, has strong links with the organisations within the council offices, such as housing, benefits, revenues, the police and the county council services. The move will mean the job centre is able to maintain its level of service to customers while also making it easier to work with its local partner organisations and employers. The relocation, which is set to take place this summer, will result in savings for both the bor-
ough council and the job centre. In addition, by moving to the council offices, the job centre will free up its current offices to other businesses that want to be located in Tewkesbury.Borough Police moved into the Council Offices, off Gloucester Road on the edge of the town centre, in July 2012. Tewkesbury Borough Police Superintendent Rob Priddy added: “Only seven months in I can say that the move to the Council Offices has seen excellent results in the service we provide.”

SPRING ON HIGHER GROUND The Malvern Hills offer excellent trekking country for walkers of a variety of abilities. This short route over high ground is ideal for spring days, with magnificent views across the vale from the summit of Herefordshire Beacon. From the car park on the A449 opposite the
Malvern Hills hotel, go through the gate and up
the path, forking right to ascend to British Camp’s 2000 year old earthworks (1). The path climbs over the ramparts to the summit of Herefordshire Beacon (2). To the west the view is towards the high hills in Wales, with undulating Herefordshire countryside in between. Looking east the panorama stretches from the Lickey Hills in the north to the Cotswolds in the south. Walk southwards along the edge of the ramparts until you come to a path (3), which

The Malverns: near British Camp Reservoir descends to an open space. Here there is a circular orientation and direction structure (4). Follow the path as directed to visit curiosity known as Clutter’s (or Giant’s) Cave. This may once have been used as a shepherd’s shelter, as well as being connected to pagan beliefs. Retrace your steps to point four and follow the broad track as it skirts around the slopes of the hill. There are various benches along this path where the views can be taken in. As the main track curves around, bear right down a steep grassy path towards the reservoir below (5). If
you don’t fancy tackling the descent and prefer to return by a higher route, the track you are on will take you back to the car park. British Camp Reservoir collects water from various hill springs. It was opened in 1895 by the Duchess of Teck, granddaughter of George III and mother of Queen Mary. On reaching the side of the reservoir, bear left, keeping the fence to your right. (6). When you reach the drive leading to the Reservoir House, turn left (7), and walk up through the woods. Eventually the drive emerges at the lower end of the car park.

Tewkesbury Historical Society’s Bulletin 22 has now been published with articles written on Tewkesbury’s History from the Romans to the Falklands. It also features the Reformation, the 1795 Womens’ Bread Riot and the apparent ‘Synagogue’ in Barton Street. It is available from, Alison’s Bookshop in the High Street.
It is hard to imagine the ‘Cross’ with no War Memorial! This photograph, from Cliff Burd’s collection, hales from an innocent period before World War I. However, having taken most by surprise, the war consumed at least 156 Tewkesbury lads. An appeal was launched and our War memorial was unveiled in 1922 by Mrs Letitia Didcote, who had lost three of her own sons. Then the Mayor, on behalf of the Council and Citizens, solemnly pledged that “the present corporation and all succeeding corporations would guard it with jealous care and see that nothing untoward happened to it”. The names of 32 men and one woman were added in 1939-1945 and another in 1972. After a delay of too many years, the Council embarked upon securing the cleaning of the Memorial in 2011 and, as we know, when that took place serious problems were discovered which require major repairs. The Council is fulfilling its obligation to press ahead but feels it needs, once more, to appeal to its citizens to raise £10,000 towards the cost of the repairs. Otherwise we shall have let down all those whose names appear on the Cross and our iconic monument could crumble to nothing. John Dixon, Tewkesbury Historical Society

The Choir Factor is coming to Tewkesbury The Choir Factor is a family run business established in 2009, singing pop, rock, Motown and gospel classics from the 1960s to the present day. The project was designed to be a great social experience for members, providing them with an opportunity to sing with a group of like minded people. CHARITY BEGINS ON THE GOLF COURSE Three captains at Sherdons Golf Centre in Tredington have spent the last twelve months fundraising for LINC to support the valuable work of this cancer charity, writes Shelby Powell. Members have taken part in a variety of events from raffles and quiz nights to social events and golf 'Away Days' plus the Annual Three Captain’s Charity Day, raising a grand total of £1,765. A BLEND OF TWO HARMONIES Folk duo ‘Megson’ have been nominated for the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards three times to date, and have received 4 star reviews from leading critics- but they aren’t stopping there, writes Rob Wakerley. Dear Tewkesbury Direct, The history books tell us where the war memorial is today which was once occupied by the High Cross this was demolished in 1650. Parts of it were used to repair the long bridge over the Avon. They say that every picture can tell a story, I like to think that this photograph was taken early on a summer’s morning. There is one pile of horse muck in the middle of the road you can see that the shop awnings are down, lads outside Barsanti’s shop in Church Street. Barsanti was an Italian and he was the first person to sell ice creams in Tewkesbury. The children appear to be looking over to Barsanti’s shop waiting
for it to open so they can enjoy the pleasures of the best confectionary in town. The war memorial was unveiled May 1922 for the men of Tewkesbury who lost their lives in the great war of 1914 -1918. It was erected in 1920. The photo of the War Memorial was taken before the brass plaques had been engraved with the names of our lost soldiers. There are 151 names of the First World War soldiers. The five standing stones as seen were put there to stop traffic from damaging the war memorial. It wasn’t that many years ago that they were removed. Derek Round, Tewkesbury. SPRING DILEMMAS Following on from last month’s piece about the onset of spring in a wildlife hospital, we are often faced with some challenging situations at this time of year, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. It is a sad fact that we all see animals lying at the side of the road after being hit by vehicles – an ever-increasing occurrence as the amount of traffic on our roads continues to grow. The most important thing that we have to consider in the spring (and even the summer) months is that the consequence of the casualty on the road, or anywhere else for that matter, might be youngsters, not old enough to fend for themselves, being left to starve to death. We recently received a call to an injured badger that had been seen in the same place for 24 hours, so we immediately sent someone out to bring the casualty back to the hospital. Initial examination by our vet revealed serious problems with a front leg and x-rays showed that the damage was too severe to be treated and our only option was euthanasia, a decision that is never taken lightly but the welfare of each individual is always paramount. Unfortunately, during the examination we discovered that the female badger was lactating, meaning that there was almost certainly a dependant cub somewhere (and quite possibly two or three).
Knowing that there are cubs which stand very little chance of survival without their mother, is a horrible feeling but there is often little we can do about it but we have to make every effort we can to locate them.

NHS CHALLENGE April 2013 marks one of the biggest changes to the NHS since its conception, writes Peter Badham. The Primary Care Trust are being disbanded and the provision of local health care will now rest with the Health and Well Being Board and the Clinical Commissioning Groups. There is a lot of good logic in that the Health and Well Being Boards will ensure that care is seamless across many different faculties, including Social Services, Education and Housing. Clearly good health is more than just medication, it is a good lifestyle, where we live and how live.

MEDAL OF HONOUR This World War II DSO Medal will be up for sale at Church Street Auctions on the 4th April. Won by Captain P.R. Cherrington for wrestling the water supply from a dug-in enemy at the village of Budalin, Burma in 1945. A medal of this calibre is expected to attract a lot of interest, and the lot includes, an engraved cigarette case, a photograph and related ephemera, to retell the story of this outstanding soldier.

INTERESTING FIND FOR MUSEUM This old but broken Victorian ceramic hot water bottle was unearthed recently in Tewkesbury by Ian Boskett. What makes it special is the sellers stamp, Haywards of Tewkesbury and Upton. Haywards still have the same two branches of their shops which are still trading over 100 years later. Finder Ian thought about taking the bottle back to the shop to see if it was still under guarantee. Simon Hayward from the business said that one that had been given to him by a customer a few years ago. Ian decided to donate it to Tewkesbury museum instead.

EVENTS TAKE TIME AND RESOURCES One of the issues for policing that many of you may not consider is the amount of special events that take so much of our time and resources – they are the events that you may look forward to, like New Years Eve or Christmas celebrations, or events that many of us gather for such as Remembrance Day Services. Some of the things that are specific for Gloucestershire might be the Royal International Air Tattoo, or for us in Tewkesbury the Mop Fair and the worldfamous cheese rolling. For every one of these events, even though you may not see us or expect us, there is a policing plan and varying degrees of presence to make sure that things go smoothly. That no traffic problems arise, that everyone out drinking gets home safely, or that parades can march through safe streets where traffic is controlled. One of the biggest events of the year is of course the Cheltenham Festival. As I write this it is the end of a busy night shift after Gold Cup day, and the numbers of visitors to the area are huge in comparison to normal. This means a busy time for us; many officers are stationed in and around the event, with

You can guarantee that we will see extremes of mood and happiness from those riding high after a successful week, and those drowning their sorrows who haven’t been so lucky! It is a time when we as a police service have to be flexible and responsive, ready for whatever occurs, and when the demands on us are extremely high. Mostly it is an enjoyable, if tiring, week, and the teams enjoy the work. They even get to do a little celebrity spotting, and back at the station we have some one-
upmanship of who has bumped into, seen or spoken to the most famous person. Within the organisation, we have had one notable development: the arrival of our new Chief Constable, Suzette Davenport, last month. Suzette arrived with us recently from her former position as Deputy Chief Constable of Northamptonshire and has already spent some time with Superintendent Priddy and the team here at Tewkesbury. Finally I have to let you know that the flexible nature of policing requires change, and that I will moving on from Tewkesbury at the end of the month to take up a new role in the custody unit at Gloucester. I have enjoyed being part of policing here and the vibrant local team working on your behalf. This of course means that the monthly article will be undertaken by someone else and next month you will hear from Inspector Brian Murnaghan to keep you up to date. As always,

TEWKESBURY’S M5NINE MARKS SECOND YEAR M5NINE is an outreach to the local community which is backed by Tewkesbury Christian Centre. Meetings are held in the Scout Hut, Oldbury Road, every Thursday between 10am and 2pm, offering tea, coffee, soup and a roll to anyone who wishes to call in. Now coming up to the end of its second year, M5NINE is looking forward to the future with a willingness to help our community. Currently M5NINE offers a Food Bank which consists of basic food essentials to anyone in need, as well as a ‘sit and knit’ get-together producing warm clothing and items for orphans and the homeless, everywhere. Hospital transportation can be provided for people who are having difficulty getting to and from appointments. The second saw Legge control the early part but the longer it went, on the more Davis began to take over. The round finished with Davis in the ascendancy, looking to land ground and pound on Legge. Both men appeared tired going into the third and Legge attempted the early takedown. Davis had his wits about him and reversed it to end up on top on the floor. Quickly working his way to Legge’s back he sank in a rear-naked choke that enticed the tap from Legge.
