EASTER EVENTS FOR ALL THE FAMILY Whatever your interests or hobbies might be, there’s plenty going on in and around the vibrant town of Tewkesbury to entertain you and your family during the spring holidays. Tewkesbury Abbey will be the focal point for Christian worship from Good Friday (15th) until Easter Monday (18th April). The Abbey is bringing back its tours this year, telling the story of its 900 year history in a 90 minute guided tour. The first will take place at 2pm on Monday 18th April, and advance booking is essential. Tickets can be purchased from the abbey shop, tea room or via Eventbrite. Over at Teddington Hands, Teddfest is taking place at the Truckstop, courtesy of William Gilder. Formerly known as ‘Season Start Up,’ the event brings together vintage, classic, modern and retro trucks and vehicles - together with live music, trade stalls and refreshments. The event begins on Friday 15th April and runs until 3pm on Sunday 17th. Tickets are available on the gate.

Ciaran McMenamin Paperback £8.99 This is the story of the lives of three childhood friends told initially through the experiences of two young men in the trenches in the First World War. The novel is split between those sections on the Western front and then, in the summer of 1922, either side of the newly established border between the Irish Republic and British Northern Ireland. Protestant Archie Johnston and Roman Catholic, Francie Leonard, grow up on adjoining farms in Co. Fermanagh. They are best friends, and at Archie's insistence join up to enlist in the British Army. They leave behind them Archie's older sister Annie, always part of their childhood escapades, who tells Francie to keep Archie safe. Francie and Annie have become a couple, their love ignoring the conflicting religions which are splitting their homeland. As far as Annie is concerned neither of her menfolk returned from the war; Archie a casualty of the conflict; Francie, for his own reasons staying away and fighting on behalf of the Republican cause. His prolonged absence never explained to her. Inspector Crozier of the Specials is on the trail of Francie, now a notorious and wanted IRA fighter sent north to take the war to the British. They have a long history as Crozier, then his superior, a Staff Sergeant, was his tormentor in the Ulster Division in Belgium and France; even from the outset of their acquaintance at training camp when he discovered Francie's religion. Events particularly on the battlefields of the Somme meant that Francie was always having to keep a watchful eye out for himself, and his friend. Crozier is after Francie, little has changed except for the colour of his uniform - now black. The chapters on the Western front are very realistically portrayed. The barbaric cruelty of the war, the inhuman suffering of the troops, be they British or German, and the wastage of lives on either side are
described unflinchingly. The camaraderie amongst the troops softening the hard realities the story has to tell. For Francie his life is threatened even then by Crozier, who is a nasty vindictive individual; but then Crozier has much to hide. How these two adversaries survived and Archie did not, is gradually revealed. The rest of the book is all about Francie, and Annie and them escaping capture. Francie had gone home to visit his mother but word quickly spreads and the Specials led by Crozier are after him. He takes refuge in the barn on the Johnston farm and of course is reunited with Annie. She helps him, the two evading the frenzied pursuit by the Specials led by Crozier. After several days of close calls and some harrowing experiences they end up at a town called Pettigo, which is literally split between north and south, where there is an exchange between the Republicans and the British army. [This interestingly was a real confrontation]. The events that lead up to Pettigo and after that engagement create a very convincing image of the formation of the two states within the Emerald Isle, portrayed through a personal vendetta, softened by a love experienced through difficult times a century ago. This is a very engrossing read, reminding me slightly of Sebastian Barry's "A Long Long Way," another WWI novel, though with a section involving the Dublin Easter Rising. The Environment Agency has commenced work on the installation of a new eel pass next to Abbey Mill Sluice. Work is expected to be end this autumn, and when complete it will provide improved passage for eels at the sec-

As part of the project, specially trained conservation dogs have been walking the works area to dissuade ground nesting birds from using the area where they could be
endangered or disturbed. Birds such as curlew have been encouraged to use their traditional breeding areas to the south and west of the Ham. Crossing points are also being installed to maintain public access to the Ham.

Popular Village Street Market set to return this summer One of the highlights of summer in the Bredon Hill villages is poised to return this July. Owing to the pandemic, the last Overbury Street Market was held in 2019 - and the wheels are now in motion for a spectacular return on Saturday 9th July. The fundraising event, which is aid of good causes in Overbury, promises two packed hours of enjoyment, with bric-a-brac, toys, books, arts and crafts, plants, preserves and cakes available on a wide range of stalls - plus refreshments and live music in an idyllic garden setting. Heritage railway is back in business The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway (GWSR) is once again welcoming travellers over its 14-mile Cotswold line between Cheltenham Racecourse and Broadway. The re-opening for the 2022 season was a week later than originally planned, as a number of significant winter engineering works were being completed. Trains will now be running every weekend and most weekdays until the end of October with the Santa Special season beginning at the end of November. The railway is also planning a wide range of events in 2022 - including a steam and real ale festival next month, and the Cotswolds Festival of Steam in June. During the winter break, the fleet of steam and heritage diesel locomotives based at Toddington engineering works has undergone maintenance and repair. All of the line’s beautifully-presented coaches have also been inspected and repaired at Winchcombe carriage works as necessary. One fully-restored coach has been specially adapted to provide additional accommodation for disabled visitors, while another has been

Significant engineering works have been completed, including permanent repair by contractors of a cutting slip at Winchcombe, and contract repair of the bridge which carries the B4632 Broadway Road over the railway near Stanton. Extension of the canopy at Broadway station to provide an airy, covered area between the station building and the new footbridge is complete too. The design closely follows the design of a similar structure that formed part of the original sta-
tion building which was demolished in 1963. This work has been carried out entirely by volunteers to an impressively high standard. GWSR Chair Richard Johnson said: “Our railway depends on around 900 volunteers. They don’t just put their feet up during the winter break – they muscle in and devote a huge amount of effort to ensure that the railway is in the best possible shape for re-opening.” Tickets can be bought in advance at the website www.gwsr.com, where full details of all services can be found.

RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker
MEDIEVAL TEWKESBURY A friend recently gave me a copy of a leaflet produced by the Gloucestershire Building Recording Group, as part of their Dendrochronology project in Tewkesbury, writes Jack B. Walker.
Distance: Approximately 2 miles, easy terrain. Car Parking: any public car park in Tewkesbury, but the route starts from Abbey Lawn (Gander Lane). Refreshments: a wealth of cafés, restaurants and inns to choose from. Take your pick! Sketch map not to scale: OS Sheet OL190 (The Malverns & Bredon Hill) recommended. Important: do NOT attempt this walk during times of flood or when high river level warnings are in place.
Mill Bank Cottages from the Ham
The project has used tree-ring dating in local timbered buildings to pinpoint when they were constructed; some date back to early Medieval times (1400s). Tewkesbury has some of the best surviving 15th-century buildings in the country, with several already a few decades old by the time of the Battle of Tewkesbury in 1471! Inspired by the ‘Tewkesbury Medieval Buildings Walk’ leaflet, (available from the Berkeley Arms and Tewkesbury Cards and Gifts,)* I have plotted a stroll around Tewkesbury, pausing to take in some of the key points of historical interest. We start from Abbey Lawns Car Park (1) walking through the gates into the grounds with the impressive tower ahead (see photo). Bear round to the right of the abbey, and turn right (2), along the path from the main entrance to exit on to Church Street. Cross the road with care, turn left and then right into Victoria

Gardens (3). Walk to Abbey Mill, then turn left to cross the weir and through a gate on to the Ham, and turn right along the path (4). Opposite you now are excellent views of Mill Bank (see photo): the earliest cottages here date back to 1454. Carry on along the path with the Mill Avon to your right. On the opposite bank are several former boat yards Just before Healings Mill, cross over the footbridge (5) and turn left along Red Lane. There’s an optical illusion at the bridge into Healings Mill, where the river appears to be running up hill. It is of course the late Victorian mill which is leaning! Keep along Red Lane,
with the Mill Avon to your left. The narrow lane curves around behind the Tudor House Hotel, and joins the High Street. Turn left (6) here and walk along to the mini roundabout, to reach the Black Bear. Built in 1439, the Black Bear - the county’s oldest inn - has been undergoing painstaking restoration for over a year now. It should reopen in the summer. Retrace your steps to point (6) and carry on along the High Street until you reach Trinity Lane on the left. Turn into the lane (7) and walk towards Oldbury Road, with Holy Trinity Church opposite. Note the fascinating little Lucia Cottage on the left, which dates back to 1437. Turn right along Oldbury Road (8), and look for Old Post Office alley on the right (9). Walk down the alley to return to the High Street, and turn left (10). After a short distance you will reach Cornell Books, formerly the Wheatsheaf Inn. This dates back to 1481. On
the wall in the passage way are the signatures of the 1950s singing stars ‘The Beverley Sisters’ who certainly left their mark! Walk down to the Cross, then right into Church Street (11). Here now are some of the town’s oldest surviving buildings. As you walk along you will pass (on both sides of the street) the Berkeley Arms (1495) and the adjacent No. 9 Church Street (1332), Tewkesbury Heritage and Tourist Information Centre (1465-95), The Royal Hop Pole (1426), the beautifully restored terrace next to the Crescent (1409) and the John Moore Museum. Also worth visiting, signposted down an alley way, is the atmospheric Old Baptist Chapel (1458) with its hidden graveyard just beyond (12). Carry on along Church Street until you reach the abbey and walk back through the grounds to the car park. *For further information visit the website www.timber-framed.com

He’s a white rabbit six feet tall, whom only Elwood can see. Elwood and Harvey go everywhere together, typically from bar to bar where Elwood drinks with and befriends strangers. Soil has five components: mineral particles (e.g. stone), organic matter, water, gases (e.g. O₂) and living organisms. The parent rock is perhaps the most critical component because it can determine the mineral content, the friability, the pH, the drainage characteristics or the fertility. It takes thousands of years for its effects to be introduced. Organic matter accumulates from successive stages of growth of organisms. It takes hundreds of years to build into rich layers. Gases are important because organisms that
live in the soil need to respire and plant roots grow in the air gaps between soil particles. The living organisms in soil are what keep it healthy. They break down dead matter and allow nutrient exchange and retention in the system. If soil is compacted, animals and bacteria find it hard to survive and the ecosystem dies. New/imported soil or soil that has been stored in big heaps is particularly prone to this as it loses its structure and this in turn affects plant health. Soil can be sandy at the coarsest end of the particle size chart or if it

With experience, you can tell what soil type (and fertility levels) you have by the vegetation in the area. It is possible to ‘improve’ soils with organic matter, lime, sand, grit, animals etc which can be rewarding, although it’s usually hard work. So maybe just choose your plants accordingly?

History which was such a boon when queuing in the former General Post Office. Readers in their 30& 40s, at least, will remember it well! I last saw it in 2013. The Post Officer closed in 2003 and the building was bought by the popular clothing store which, of course, needed as much wall display space as possible. The tableau was covered up very carefully and it is still in the same condition, a superb piece of art – which does not deserve to be covered up. The tableau will be worth viewing for a short time at M&Co – but what about the long term? I am sure that the company will allow us to remove the tiles providing the wall is properly restored. We are, therefore, looking for volunteer help: • Someone who can carefully remove the tiles and store them before their restoring them; • Someone who has a wall (approximately 9 ft

Phew! - the Hop Pole Management managed to finish their portico restoration in time for Cheltenham Race Week – and free up Church Street traffic!, writes John Dixon. Since the company arrived in the town about 14 years ago, it must be congratulated on proving itself unafraid on investing in the expensive historic nature of the building. Restoring the portico could be something of a gamble, however, as we can see in 1957 when an erring lorry knocked it down. Unfortunately, the next year every main building of the town was photographed formally and, thus, preserved the Hotel with this poor imitation - it did not long survive. It is a very important historical symbol as, in 1892, it was reported that “The Royal Arms, which are of exquisite workmanship and finish, were made by the Coalbrookdale Iron Company and supplied and fixed by King and Handley of this town (then inhabiting the Nodding Gables). The precious right to be named the Royal Hop Pole was derived in an amusing way. Queen Victoria’s daughter had married an impecunious German, the Duke of Teck. He was famous for expecting to be entertained royally - but for no payment. In return he granted the pub the right to display the Royal Arms! In the party was their daughter Princess May (pictured above) who was engaged to the Queen’s heir. However, he died and was replaced by the younger Duke of York who became King George V. Conveniently, he had married his late brother’s fiancée - who is now famous to us as Queen Mary, grandmother of our present Queen. I have never understood why the coaching inn was named the Hop Pole because, as far as I know, the nearest that hops were grown was Bredon’s Norton. Can any reader convince me of the reason for its main name?

It’s been happening for centuries (they didn’t call it ‘traditional’ back then though)! The really special thing about ceilidh dancing though, is how fun and embracive it is. encourage everyone. The steps can be as simple or as complex as you’re game for. Although you start most dances partnered up, the very nature of a ceilidh means that everyone ends up dancing with each other at some point. No experience is necessary! You will be under the watchful eye of the professional caller who’ll be with you every step of the way – walking you through the moves before each dance and continuing to call out helpful hints through out the rest of the dances. Tewkesbury Choral Society continues to move forward out of the Covid era. We will perform Brahms’ German Requiem (in English) in Tewkesbury Abbey on Saturday 14th May at 7.30 p.m. Tewkesbury Choral Society gave its first concert for two years in December 2021. We performed Haydn’s “The Creation” to a very appreciative audience. Our numbers were reduced from about 120 in pre-pandemic days to 70. However what we lacked in numbers we made up for in quality. We sang with accuracy and musicality and the concert was enjoyed by all - audience, orchestra and singers. We looked forward to beginning a new year, and hopefully with Covid in retreat, we hoped we could build on our December concert and welcome new members into the choir. Sadly this was not to be. Omicron struck. We
his Requiem partly as a response to the death of his mother and of his friend and mentor, Robert Schumann. Unusually he does not use the words from the Latin Mass for the Dead which speak of death, torment, judgement, but selected passages from the Bible, using the German language, for the German people, to offer comfort and consolation to the bereaved. At this time we believe that these words will be well received. Our soloists for this concert will be Hannah Davey, a superb soprano from Cheltenham and Thomas Humphreys, who has delighted us in the past with his rich baritone voice. Unusually for works of this type, they do not sing their parts alone but are accompanied by the choir. Also it is usually performed with a large orchestra, but we will be performing it in Brahms’ own arrangement for pi-

Sarah McQuaid In May, the intimate 15th century venue sees the welcome return of international singing star Sarah McQuaid, who played at sell-out concert in the chapel during the autumn of 2019. Honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Ards International Guitar Festival in Northern Ireland (2017), Sarah McQuaid has also drawn critical praise for her voice and her engaging rapport with audience. During the lockdown she recorded a solo live album, The St Buryan Sessions, in the church near her home in Cornwall. This year she is touring to launch the collection, which re-visits some of her earlier work and also features two previously unreleased ‘cover’ songs. Journalist Neil March described Sarah as “one of the most instantly recognisable voices in current music … shades of Joni Mitchell in a jam with Karen Carpenter and Lana Del Rey,” while the Huffington Post said “I’ve attended hundreds of concerts of all kinds, and her subtle mastery onstage launches her straight into my fave shows ever.” Sarah returns to Tewkesbury on Friday 27th May, with doors open at 7.30pm for an 8pm start. As I write this I have still to receive confirmation from Forthampton Estate that we can walk the private tracks through the woods near the cricket pavilion. One Year On; How the Youth of Tewkesbury Came Together by Annabelle Lee In Tewkesbury, there are many talented young people who contribute to the artistic and cultural landscape of the town. It is very important to recognise this talent and celebrate these incredible achievements, considering that young people are the future of the town. On the 13th of April 2021, Tewkesbury experienced the loss of 17 year old Finn Bayliss, leaving the community shocked and in a sudden state of mourning. However, as a result of this tragic event, Tewkesbury’s youth came together to organise a myriad of events that paid a magnificent tribute to Finn’s life and interests. Both Finn’s closest friends and family and even complete strangers to the Saville and Bayliss families bonded together at such a devastating time and worked together to create a legacy for the ‘high-spirited’ young man so that he will never be forgotten within the community. Initially, a GoFundMe page was established to help Finn’s family in anyway possible with an original goal of £2,000 however due to the generosity of his peers and the wider community of Tewkesbury, it raised way more than expected with 359 people donating whatever they could to aid his family at that vulnerable time. Along with this incredible display of generosity from Tewkesbury, his closest friends and strangers alike flooded the highstreet with their motorbikes, a symphony of engines that truly showed the impact Finn had upon the community and the perfect way to show respect for a son, a brother, an uncle and a best friend or even a stranger who shared the same passion for motorbikes. Along with these events and fundraisers, Finn’s brother Toby, who also organised the ride out of the motorbikes, and his closest friends helped to organise a beautiful vigil that took place at Northway Park to mourn in a way Finn would have enjoyed. A fireworks display,
a collection of motorbikes all bought by his closest friends and his favourite kind of music, Drum and Bass, filled the field along with 400 of his friends who came to support his family and each other during a shocking period of mourning. One year on, it is so important to reflect about how the young people of Tewkesbury were able to encapsulate Finn’s energy and how they mirrored this as they mourned him in ways that were re-

spectful however that still showed Finn’s personality. He was an aspiring Drum and Bass artist and a sociable boy who was the ‘not only my son, but my rock and my best friend’. This is how his mum, Shaz, remembers him so beautifully and continues to honour his memory.

After starting 2022 with a very lively and enjoyable meal at Zitta e Mangia, we are now getting into full swing with our monthly meetings.
At our last two meetings we learnt a lot about our local history, firstly we heard about how Mitton Manor was used as a convalescent home for soldiers from WWI. This month we heard the story of the Severn Railway bridge disaster. It was opened in 1879 to transport coal from the Forest of Dean across the Severn to Sharpness before it collapsed in 1960 when boats hit one of the piers. So much history than many members knew nothing about. We have a full program of speakers this year as well as a monthly craft group and outings. We are a very friendly group and we would love to welcome you to our meetings which take place on the second Wednesday of every month at 2pm at the Wheat Pieces Community Centre. AN ASSET TO THE VILLAGE COMMUNITY It is three years since, Jag Purewell, wife Raji, and son Jivan took over Twyning Stores, and to celebrate, staff organised a special anniversary celebration outside their shop in March. Churches Together Easter Message 2022 Hot Cross buns and Easter Eggs have been in the shops since the beginning of the year and there is a sense that this is all there is to Easter. I got to thinking about Easter Eggs and hot cross buns recently and wondered why Christmas is a more attractive season than Easter. From a viewpoint of faith, is a birth more important that a death. You may say, well if there was no birth there could not be a death?. It may be that you are completely indifferent to both Christmas and Easter and I respect your view. However, before you turn to another page can I ask that ask that you carefully consider my next paragraph please. Just over two thousand years ago a man named Jesus was born in Bethlehem and at the age of thirty years started a ministry which resulted in a worldwide movement covering all aspects of life. Jesus came to bring love, joy, and peace to a hurting world. Eventually he was stopped, arrested, and brought to trial, on trumped-up charges which resulted in him being crucified on a cross. On the cross I believe His death brought us life. He was taken from the cross and placed in a tomb. This is not the end of the story because three days later He rose from the dead. That is why one of the hymns of the Church states “I serve a risen Saviour, He’s in the world today.” It is true that Jesus is alive today through His Holy Spirit in millions of people’s lives throughout the world. Dire Straits bass player heads for Tewkesbury Known the world over for his work as the bassist in the massively successful Dire Straits, John Illsley heads for Tewkesbury as part the launch tour for his new album. ‘VIII’ features eight brand new songs, plus a newly recorded studio version of the classic Beatles track ‘I’m Only Sleeping’ which John performed at the virtual ‘Dear John’ concert in 2020 celebrating John Lennon’s 80th birthday. The album release follows the publication of the successful autobiography ‘My Life in Dire Straits’. This new album from John instantly evokes the classic feel and sound of the band, augmented of course with his own personal style and touch, and will be a delight to fans old and new. The album will be released in May, and the tour that John will be undertaking will offer an evening of music and

On Sunday 2nd May there will be an anniversary walk - for more details see www.tewkesbury.org.uk The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway has restarted its services, taking passengers on a nostalgic 14 mile journey from Broadway to Cheltenham Race Course, through stunning Cotswold scenery. See the article on page five for more details. Tewkesbury Baptist Church will be holding an Easter Fayre and Parade on Saturday 2nd April, from 11am until 3pm. There will be stalls, refreshments and entertainment on the stage at the church (in Station Road) - culminating in an Easter Hat parade at 2.45pm. Open to all who have a hat! Admission is by donation to the Community Build Project. Up-river at Upton-upon-Severn, the famous folk festival returns from Friday 29th April until Monday 2nd May. The town plays host to a number of top traditional folk artists for a series of concerts, as well as a grand procession, Morris dancing and general folkie fun throughout the town.
