The shepherd's hut of the title is the location where Jaxie Clackton, a teenage boy ends up after a series of initial events that are covered in the first part of this unusual Australian story, which is recounted by Jaxie himself. We first meet him suffering not only some physical abuse from his father, who he works for, but also regular verbal insults; his mother, to whom he was close, having died some months earlier. On finding his father crushed underneath his car, the jack having collapsed; he fears that he will be blamed. In their small town everybody knows everything, and their relationship is public knowledge. He sets off, on foot, in somewhat of a hurry taking many of the things he will need, but omitting to pack some other essentials. He is armed with a rifle, which he is more than proficient, for his age, at using. He treks north for several days, the aim is to reach his girl friend and cousin Lee, and during this hike we learn about Jaxie and Lee, their childhood and how their unusual upbringings has brought them closer together. He reaches an old miner's hut where he stays for a few days, hunting, but he cannot keep his meat so plans to fetch salt. It is on this outing he arrives at the shepherd's hut, where he meets Fintan MacGillis, a retired Irish Catholic priest who lives out in this deserted location on the edge of the salt plain. The story unfolds as their relationship develops from initial mistrust by Jaxie, who thinks he

The exact story is in part revealed. Fintan is an odd character, but who would not be after living a solitary existence until a rather brash teenager turns up. Jaxie is always planning to move on but the days pass into weeks, and months until the wind changes which leads to a series of fairly brutal events which epitomise the harsh life that some inhabitants of Western Australia live. This is not a story for those of a delicate disposition, equally it is not overly gruesome; it has it's fair share of Aussie slang, and swearing, but it does give a very clear view of rural life and whilst some of that continent is very sophisticated, there are vast swathes of land where human inhabitation has declined leaving a scarred landscape. Jaxie's early life has also been scarred, how he and Fintan come together is a good read. ROLL UP! ALL THE FUN OF THE FAIR! Now in motion at Tewkesbury Museum, Mr Alfred Salt’s fabulous model fairground! After two years hard work, volunteers at the museum are putting the finishing touches to the model fair which has been, on and off, part of Tewkesbury life for the past half century. As displayed it consists of five major rides – Gallopers, Mini-cars, Chair-0-planes, Steam Yachts and a Big Wheel. In addition, there are static rides, stalls, caravans and hundreds of people. But this is only a part of the original display, hand made by Mr Salt in the 1950s, when, it was, he boasted, the “best in Britain”. The fair was later given to Tewkesbury Council by a Councillor Husband and installed in the Town Hall basement. It was declared open in 1968, but cramped and damp in the old police cells, it ran there for about a year, before gradually falling into disuse. In the 1980s it was rescued and taken to the museum. Tewkesbury Fair Society and the museum restored five of the rides, though without power. Two years ago, the
museum decided to again restore the fair, this time with motors, lights and music. In addition, the whole display would occupy the ground floor front room, acting as a shop window display to attract people into the museum.

The backdrop
The result is, to be frank, stunning. The rides are housed on a specially made table with explanatory panels on the front. Along the rear of the table top runs a specially created 3D streetscape of Tewkesbury in the 1950s, and on top sit the rides, stalls, caravans and a crowd of people. Modern motors provide the motion, and a bespoke control system is activated by visitors push buttons; when complete, it will also handle lights and music. All the fun of the fair. This is a very ambitious scheme for a small museum, funded by very generous donations from individuals, charities and a bequest. To complement the

We have suspended the process where our drivers had to receive a signature from the patient when they made the delivery, to reduce any possible spread of the virus. Our drivers have been instructed to wash their hands each and every time they go to one of our pharmacies. The vans have been issued with suitable wipes and products to ensure the vehicles are not contaminated. Please inform our pharmacies if you think you might have the virus, we can still support you. For patients who believe they might have the infection, our drivers can now leave the medication on the door mat, press the door bell, and wait in the van until the parcel is taken inside by the patient. A masterful restoration A 1950’s petrol pump has undergone a restoration, incorporating the corporate Shell petroleum livery of the time, and reflects it’s former glory. On behalf of a client, Chrissi Eaton, of Three Counties Interior Wood Finishers, undertook the stripping and refinishing at his workshops at Newtons Farm Ashchurch. Chrissi said, “Clearly, de-rusting, cleaning, and respraying metal artifacts is not in my usual line of work, but the processes of refinishing are very similar and I enjoy putting things back into their original condition.” Chrissi can repolish and paint furniture to a high and durable standard, and his work includes, kitchen cabinets, dressers, old and new furniture or any

The Gourmet Garage The name Gyngell used to be synonymous with Garages in central Tewkesbury because two brothers were in the trade, writes John Dixon. There was Fred, who operated the Central Garage at the Cross (now One Stop) whilst Bert had not only a cycle shop but also Abbey Garage, from 1920-1953, located on the corner of Church Street and St. Mary’s Lane. It was later owned by Graham Wright, until he opened the garage still on the Ashchurch Road (now PJ Nicholls). Younger people might be surprised to know that, when they dine at the Salerno Restaurant, it was - until 1991 - a garage repairing cars, with motor oil and grease instead of olive cooking oil. In addition, in 1923 Mr Gyngell bought the right to operate a petrol pump over the pavement – in 1927 a car caught fire whist filling up! By 1985 it was clear that garages no longer belonged to the centre of town, so it started being integrated with the Abbey Hotel next door. Not surprising the restaurant’s first name was ‘Abbots’ and the restaurant and hotel are now as one since 1985.

Artifacts from bygone days discovered during Barn Restoration Work has started on restoring an old Medieval Barn, annexed to the Berkeley Arms Pub at Tewkesbury Cross. The work is being carried out in partnership with the pub and the, not for profit organisation, The Pub is the Hub, on the basis that the barn can be used as a community asset, for meetings, events, music and more. Licensee Ron Winwood is keen to make readers aware of the restoration with a view to engage public support for it. However, during preparatory clearance, items spanning many years was discovered behind a rubble wall. These items include a Tewkesbury and District, Homing Pigeon certificate dated 1906, a
Gloucestershire Old Spot Pig Society Herdbook from 1921, a cash book from long gone Tewkesbury shop W.H. Wilkins amongst many other items. Ron has put a display cabinet into the pub to display the items so that customers can appreciate the pub’s long history.

Unprecedented times “Unprecedented times” seems to be the key phrase at the moment and there's no better description for this completely surreal situation that we all find ourselves in at the moment, writes Amanda Orton. It's a situation that you see in films; not real life! It's a massive period of adjustment for us all. We've all been hauled out of our comfort zones and plonked down in uncharted territories. For so long, we have been used to having “What we want; when we want it” and temporarily, that has been suspended. Sadly, we're seeing the greedy and selfish side of people in supermarkets, loading up their trolleys with far more than they need for a weeks shopping maybe they ought to introduce basket only shopping and take away the trolleys. The flip side of that is the wonderful people who are taking care of others – doing their shopping, running errands etc. And of course, everyone who is going above and beyond to keep the country running as healthily and normally as possible – our fabulous NHS staff, food chain employees (be nice to them please – they're doing a sterling job), postmen and delivery drivers and the many other tradesmen and women who are looking after us all. A huge thank you to them all! Life as we know it has been turned on it's head and many of us don't like change – me included – I never relish that new mobile phone at upgrade time for example. The familiar pattern of our lives has been temporarily been put on hold, and we all have a new normal, so let’s use this as a wonderful
opportunity to rediscover ourselves and each other and try some different things. It will be strange to have families thrown together more than usual, but as I write this, the sun is shining, which always helps. Youngsters can get out into the garden to play; this could be a good time to teach them housekeeping and DIY skills. Little ones could be entertained with a treasure hunt around the house – the prize being something as simple as bedtime being a little later for one night. Take it in turns to cook and try new recipes if you can't get your usual groceries – you might discover your new favourite food! Kids love to cook too – they could do a restaurant night for grown ups, including a simple menu card and waiter service too of course. I can see picnics being the favoured dining experience this summer – if it's raining, have a picnic on a rug in the sitting room. Don't forget to spoil yourselves with little treats – I shall be giving myself regular manicures and pedicures, and have bought some new colours of nail polish.
And exercise to get the serotonin going – dancing around the sitting room to your favourite music will get the feel good factor
pumping. Take time to appreciate the good things too, like the gorgeous flowers that are blooming at the moment – there is still a lot of beauty around us. And don't forget that it's okay to feel that this is all weird, because it is. We're all going to react to this differently and that's okay too. Look out for each other and take care of yourself too! American Star to reschedule Tewkesbury Concert Rising American folk star Rebecca Loebe has had to postpone her European tour due to the Coronovirus. The bubbly singer songwriter was scheduled to play in Europe and the UK this month, including a penultimate show in Tewkesbury, Rebecca, who has appeared on the US edition of the hit TV show ‘The Voice,’ was looking forward to playing in the intimate setting of the Old Baptist Chapel, and her tour manager told Tewkesbury Direct that she is looking to reschedule the gig for next year. RAMBLING AROUND: ALDERTON AND DUMBLETON HILLS with Jack B. Walker A walk up into the woods on Alderton Hill is very pleasing at this time of year, when the woodland flowers are springing back into life, writes Jack B. Walker. Park with care on the outskirts of Alderton, (if there is space, near the
playing field), or in the village centre - with respect to local residents. From the Beckford Road, take the path north along the side of a field towards a gap, and then follow the Winchcombe Way marker diagonally left across a field to a stile in a
hedge (1). Keep the same line across the next field to another stile and over a footbridge, taking the route towards the corner of the woods which are clearly visible on Alderton Hill (2). As the hedge gets closer, look for the stile
on the right, go over it and across towards the stile into the woods (3). Follow the path through the trees as it skirts around the base of the hill. the Dumbleton Estate. At the end of the wood, go through the gate and across a mead-
ow to reach a five bar gate with a stile beside it (4). Do not head towards the farm, or take the footpath ahead - but turn right and follow the blue bridleway markers up a steep slope towards another five bar gate. Go through and back into the wood, following the bridleway as it continues to climb. Eventually the bridleway meets a lane coming up from Dumbleton. Turn right, and at the signpost follow the
directions down the hill to Alderton (5). The steep descent takes you across a lane (6) and then down over a field with the hedge to your left. Go over a footbridge (7) and along the field boundary. Cross a stile into a paddock (8) and through a kissing gate into an alleyway, which brings you back into Alderton. At the road (9) turn right to return to the playing field.

TEWKESBURY MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL 2020 It is with great regret that the decision has been made to cancel this year’s festival. This is following the advice of the Government on mass gatherings. We, the Directors of the Festival, are deeply indebted to all the re-enactors, traders and caterers as well as our valiant and hard-working crew, who come to the event and help us make it the popular, fabulous event it has become. We would also like to extend our thanks to our Landlords: Tewkesbury Borough Council, Tewkesbury Park Hotel, the Gupshill Manor, etc, as well as the local traders who support us by means of advertising in our programme, and/or sponsoring us. OSTEOPATHY ADVICE with Katie Hogg, Two Rivers Osteopathy Sciatica is a firm favourite self-diagnosis for many people. Pain in the leg is often blamed on sciatica. So, what really is sciatica? The sciatic nerve, is a large nerve which stems from 5 nerves from the back. These all join together to become the sciatic nerve which is about as thick as a finger. This nerve then travels down the back of the thigh, the back of the lower leg and into the outside of the foot. It has many nerves which branch off from it on the way so by the time it gets to the foot it is a fairly thin nerve. The term “Sciatica”, literally means “irritation of the sciatic nerve”. Osteopathically the diagnosis “Sciatica” does not tell you where this nerve is being irritated. This could be from the lumbar spine, the pelvis, through the buttock musculature or the hamstrings. True sciatica includes pain travelling down the whole length of the nerve from lower back, down the back of the leg, all the way to the outside of the foot. The underlying cause still needs to be established in order to treat

There are many ways in which to treat this condition and after being in practice for 12 years I am still waiting to find two cases of this condition which respond in the same way to treatment. Bluebell Walk
At the time of writing we have our popular Bluebell Walk arranged to take place on Sunday 26th April from the cricket pavilion on Bushley Green [GL20 6JB] starting at 2.30. The 2 mile walk is on tracks through the privately owned woods, by permission of the landowners, and is usually followed by an excellent afternoon tea at the cricket club for £5 per person. There are acres of bluebells in the woods to admire, which are stunning if we are lucky enough to get a sunny day. Team owner Graham Carter has been a keen motorcycle fan for many years and worked in the paddock with Charlie a few years back when the youngster was riding a Moto3 bike in the British Superbike Championship. With Carter now having formed his own team, Atkins will start the season racing their Kawasaki 636 in the No Limits 600cc championship next weekend, a nine event series on some of the best circuits in the UK, following which, the aim is to obtain enough financial backing to compete in the Quattro Group British Supersport Championship, a support class of British Superbikes, starting in April. The first day of testing was spent learning the track and finding a base setting for suspension and gearing. The track was completely new to both rider and team. The following morning, they were up early and back in action with
the team making numerous large and small scale changes to the various bike settings, gaining valuable feedback from the rider. Day three saw a new chain fitted, another gearing adjustment and
plan was to just do the morning session and pack up and head back to the UK. However, a series of red flags early on had brought about little progress from the first session. With plenty of data in
Charlie Atkins on the Kawasaki 636 with Graham Carter and the Synergy Racing Team a new set of tyres. Atkins was instructed to up the pace as he took to the circuit with some big names, such as, Taylor Mackenzie and James Hillier. Atkins continued to provide precious information to the team, who in turn were able to make further adjustments. This saw Charlie set some impressive lap times. On the final day the

MY PILGRIMAGE FOR THE HOMELESS by By Chris O’Grady Back in March 2010 I set off on a four month walk of 1,200 miles from Pershore, Worcestershire that ended in Rome Italy. Bless Jill my wife of these last nine years, as together now living in Tewkesbury we have worked out a plan that will allow me to spend
six weeks walking on my own the complete 627 miles of the South West Coast Path. I begin in Bournemouth on the 30th March with the plan to end at Minehead on 5th May 2020. I have pledged to raise at least £5,000 for charities which support peo-

ple and families “living rough”, while at the same time personally intend to rely on the “kindness of strangers” with occasional requests for couchsurfing or hospitality to support my “Pilgrimage for the Homeless”. I am also working on giving talks to local groups in the South West as I pass through about my experience of Walking to Rome, one man four pairs of underpants and 1,200 miles to go. Money raised at these talks will be given directly to local charities helping the homeless “The Homeless” for whom I am raising money are those we all see on the streets of the towns where we live and work, as well as those around the world, often
refugees made homeless through war, political unrest or environmental disasters. All contributions made to my “Pilgrimage for the Homeless” will be passed directly to charities and professionallyrun organizations that support those people who have no home. FOODBANK Here at Tewkesbury Foodbank we are getting ready to support our Community face the threat of the coronavirus pandemic as it unfolds. Our first priority is to ensure the safety of everyone who comes to our Foodbank, whether it’s someone who needs help, someone volunteering their time, or someone making a donation. In order to this we are now asking visitors and clients to wait at the door of our Centre to reduce contact for everyone. This way vouchers can be processed, and the food given out more quickly, with fewer volunteers. Our second, but equally as important priority, is to remain open and able to help those in financial crisis and homelessness in our town. In order to do this,

ARMOUR AT THE ABBEY 2020 It is with regret that the Tewkesbury Medieval Festival and Tewkesbury Abbey announce that this year's Armour at the Abbey, scheduled for Saturday 2nd May and Sunday 3rd May, is cancelled. This is following Government recommendations on gatherings. However, next year, 2021 which is the 900th anniversary of the consecration of the Abbey, plus 550 years since the Battle of Tewkesbury in 1471, will go ahead with even more for people to come and see and enjoy. This is scheduled for Sunday 2nd and Monday 3rd May, plus other events on the Saturday. As well as the re-enactors displaying their skills, way of life and clothing, archery demonstrations, trying-on of armour, etc, there will also be a service to dedicate a new casket which is to be made for the bones of the Duke of Clarence (butt of Malmsey wine fame) and his wife, Isabella of Warwick. MITTON W.I. The March meeting was certainly interesting! We were visited by the England's Glory Ladies Morris dancers who treated us to a couple of dances before giving a potted history of their group and Morris dancing in general. This group was one of the first all-ladies groups in the country, established in 1973 and their main dances originate from Ilmington near Stratfordon-Avon. It was then our turn to join in - we certainly laughed alot, but much of the foot- and handwork went very much awry. Although the group are asking for volunteers, we don't think they will be picking many of us! The England’s Glory ladies will be performing all around the country again this year so visit their website for dates. It was lovely to see more new faces at the meeting and hope our lack of dancing skills have not put them off joining us again very soon. Due to current circumstances our meetings are cancelled until further notice. New members very welcome to come along and join us. SENSATIONAL SANDSTONE OFFERS
By Stephanie Jepson of Courtney World Travel These past few weeks have been worrying for many people. There has been so much conflicting advice regarding holidays. After an update from ABTA on 17th March I can hopefully cast some light on things for you and the current situation. Before Covid19 reared its ugly head, if the FCO advised against travel to a destination then a Tour Operator was obliged to refund your money or offer an alternative holiday. The government and ABTA have since updated this advice as Covid19 and its affects have been unprecedented: Most operators are now offering a credit note which you can use with that Tour Operator through the travel agent who you booked your holiday with. There are time restrictions on the vouchers – there will be a ‘re-book’ by date and a ‘travel by’ date on the voucher and every Tour Operator is different. For instance, if a tour operator operates its own flights then they have a lot more flexibility over the duration of time you can re-book. If a Tour Operator is not using their own flights then the airfare rules will differ depending on the airline and the oper-
ator will be governed by that and so will your voucher. That is the easiest way of explaining it (I hope). If you want to go on the same holiday but later, most operators are allowing us to simply swap your holiday to the new dates. Refund policies vary from Tour Operator to Tour Operator, and some are only offering vouchers or a re-book. This has naturally caused some people anxiety but in a few months’ time when all this madness dies down and hopefully Covid19 or ‘Corona’ (as we so lovingly call it) has gone away we will

One of the most beautiful creatures one can see, I think, is the butterfly, writes David Slater. As a teacher one of my favourite places to take children was to the Butterfly Farm in Stratford Upon Avon. Stratford-upon-Avon Butterfly Farm was opened in 1985. It is housed in a large greenhouse, with waterfalls, ponds and a wide variety of tropical plants. Many hundreds of exotic butterflies from all over the world fly within this area. Visitors can walk throughout and observe behaviour and lifecycles at first hand. We even took cocoons back to school so that we could see them develop into butterflies using
specially developed viewing boxes developed by the staff of the farm. Just imagine the excitement when the butterflies began to emerge! This made me think of the story of a young man who loved butterflies just like me. He was totally fascinated by them. It so happened that he had discovered some cocoons on a twig that had been broken off by the wind in a park near his house. He picked up the twig

carefully and noticed that the cocoons were securely woven to the twig by silken threads and were undamaged. He wrapped them carefully in his handkerchief and took them home. On getting home he placed the twig with the cocoons in a large Kilner jar and made a lid of cotton which he tied on, making sure there were holes for air to circulate. Each day he looked carefully at the cocoons. Nothing happened at first and then one day he noticed that one appeared to be moving. It was swaying very gently. It was actually trembling with activity. And that was that. Nothing else happened for ages. The cocoon he was watching stayed firmly attached to the twig and the vibrations continued. No sign of anything else happening. And then the vibrating and shaking seemed to become more intense but with no sign of a butterfly! The man had never seen anything like this before and had never been taught about the life cycle of butterflies so he started to get rather concerned. He got so concerned that he convinced himself that the butterfly was in distress and was actually trapped within the cocoon and was desperately trying to escape. The man was so worried that he took a penknife and very carefully made a tiny slit in the side of the cocoon. Almost immediately a wing appeared and then another. The man was overjoyed. He was convinced that he had just helped the butterfly to become free.
The butterfly walked unsteadily along the twig but it didn't fly. The man sat there watching for an absolute age but still the butterfly did not fly. He thought that perhaps the wings needed time to dry. He left for a while and then went back to see what was happening, expecting to see the butterfly at least attempting to fly. He was disappointed. Sadly the butterfly never did fly and died. The man was devastated but went to his local Garden Centre and spoke to one of the helpers there who knew about garden insects like butterflies. He told her the full story and as soon as he mentioned slitting the cocoon she said, “ Well, there's your reason, I am afraid. The butterfly needed that time in the cocoon to fully develop. It is the struggle inside the cocoon that gives the butterfly the strength to fly. You thought you were helping but actually you were doing the opposite!” Thinking about that story again today makes me think that there is a real important parallel between the life of the butterfly and that of our own. Sometimes it is the struggles in life that strengthen us the most and help us get to where we want or are meant to be. It is also a story which reminds us that we should not interfere in things unless we really know what we are doing and understand the full consequences of our actions. David C. Slater
