CRAIG AIMS TO CRACK SWIM RECORD On Saturday 17th July Craig Openshaw from the Tewkesbury area is attempting to be the first person to swim the 47.1 miles of the navigable River Avon.

He is hoping to achieve this world first in just 24 hours - all to raise money for Cancer Research UK. If successful Craig will become an un-official World Record Holder. Craig will be assisted in the swim by his Support crew, Rob, Bob, Joe and Phill, all local Tewkesbury lads. The swim will start at Alveston Lock in the early hours of the morning in total darkness, finishing many hours later in Tewkesbury where the Avon meets the Severn! The ‘Swim the Avon’ team are hoping to raise £4,700 - £100 for each of the miles Craig Swims. They have already raised £4,200 and are hoping to exceed their original target. Crew member, Rob Stringer said: “We are delighted to be raising money for Cancer Research UK. “All Team Swim The Avon members are

This American author recounts the story of Evangeline, a prisoner, in 1840 in the infamous Newgate prison in London, having been a governess, after her clerical father died. The opening section of the book recounts these events, the hardship of prison life and then the soul-breaking journey south which she endures with fellow inmate and deportee Olive. On board she meets the ship's doctor, Dr Dunne, and fellow convict, Hazel, a Scottish teenager who has knowledge of herbal medicine and midwifery learnt alongside her mother in Glasgow.

Beside the story of Evangeline we are also follow the life of Mathinna, an orphaned indigenous child who is "found" by the wife of the British Governor of Tasmania and then "adopted" and removed from her native surroundings to the Governor's house. There, for a while, she lives a comfortable, but strange lonely life, without receiving any real love and care. Her story is one of the misuse and abuse of natives, even children. The paths of Hazel and Mathinna eventually
cross, and then over the years their paths intertwine until the novel's conclusion in 1868; however, over these twenty-eight years, we witness the lives of the deportees in Tasmania. The day-to-day events for the women become no easier ashore. The long voyage and some cruelties experienced on board follow them and permeate their years as they serve their sentences. The growing and developing colony on Tasmania is established as are the lives of the main characters of this book that come into focus in the closing chapters of this unusual historical novel.

Full service to resume from 20th July on Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway Following the Government’s decision to delay lifting of COVID restrictions, the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway (GWSR) will continue its present pre-bookable round trip services until 18th July. Trips are available from Toddington, Broadway and Cheltenham Racecourse stations. Winchcombe Station, Gotherington Halt and Hayles Abbey Halt remain closed. The planned show in the Tim Mitchell Building, marking the 40 years since the formative GWSR was created to preserve as much as possible of the route of the former Stratford-upon-Avon to Cheltenham railway line, from which all track had been lifted, will go ahead from the 20th July. Sadly, ‘Posters from the Steam Age’ – a show marking the life and work of the last great railway poster artist, Laurence Fish – scheduled for July at Winchcombe Station – has had to be postponed and is now rescheduled for September. Article cuts the mustard for Tewkesbury Historical Society’s Woodard Award Tewkesbury Historical Society’s Woodard Award for 2021 has been awarded to Karl Freeman, for his article Great Balls of Fire (the Story of Tewkesbury Mustard). Judges Dr. Steven Blake and David Aldred, attended the society's AGM via ‘Zoom’ where they praised the quality of the THS Bulletin publication, and chose Karl's article as winner. The runner-up was The Rise and Fall of Tewkesbury High School by Clementine Oliver. The Woodard Award is presented annually for the best article published in the Historical Society’s Bulletins. The point of the Award is that it is independently adjudicated by two wellknown local historians. Dt Steven Blake, who is now chair of GLHA, advised on the setting up of Tewkesbury Historical Society in 1991. David Aldred was formerly head of History at Cleeve School, and was a photographic passenger on the Last Train to Tewkesbury in 1961. Tewkesbury Art Society is back up and running, and is open to both existing members and any new members who wish to join us. We are currently meeting in The Watson Hall on Barton Street every Tuesday morning from 10am until 12noon. THREE CHOIRS FESTIVAL RETURNS The Three Choirs Festival, one of the country’s foremost programmes of choral and orchestral music, is set to return this summer. Due to the Covid pandemic, 2020’s event had to be called off. This year’s festival will take place from Saturday 24th July to Sunday 1st August in Worcester Cathedral. With a history stretching back over 300 years, The Three Choirs is the world’s longest running non-competitive classical music festival, and alternates between the historic cathedral cities of Gloucester, Hereford and Worcester. Down the centuries the Three Choirs has seen many premieres, with composers Frederick Delius, Ralph
Vaughan Williams and Edward Elgar amongst those who have conducted their own work at the festival. Events are held in the beautiful cathedrals as well as other venues in and around the host cities, which have in the past included Tewkesbury Abbey. Remembering Sharon Louise Thompson Denniss Owner of Tewkesbury’s Italian restaurant, Zitto e Mangia, Natasha Buchwald, has put up a plaque in memory of her good friend Sharon Thompson Denniss. Sadly, Sharon died in July 2020 and Natasha fondly remembers the many happy evenings spent with Sharon and husband Dean. She describes Sharon as “one of life’s friendly people, a lovely person, and a great pal.” The plaque marks, “Sharon’s corner”, her favourite spot in the restaurant, and records how much she is missed by customers and staff.
Dr Mike Jenkins obviously has a love of history and of how the names of our towns and villages have evolved over the centuries. This well produced book is assisted by a very comprehensive index, something which is sadly omitted from many local books on cost grounds. Yet here it is included, with some 18 pages where you can look up a broad miscellany of names; as diverse as Worcester, Wychavon, Winchcombe to even Washington D.C. Therefore it is easy to find a specific town of particular interest. After an initial introduction entitled “The Foundation” the author moves into a history of “Populating Britain” by region, ethnic group, even invader. There follows a record of “The Place names of Worcestershire” again by ethnicity, where the author clearly presents his research unfolding interesting detail for locations close and further afield. In addition to our town, of Tewkesbury, other Gloucestershire locations are detailed. Across the county borders, Bredon Hill which receives multiple listings, alongside Kemerton, Conderton, Puckeridge and Broadway, to name but a few. A diversity of hills are featured from the Malverns, Cotswolds to Cleeve Hill, even the Chilterns. Heading just slightly further afield Pershore and then the etymology of the names of Evesham receives particular attention. This is a strangely beguiling book, one which is likely to be taken down off the shelf and referred to many times. A great gift. If the author’s name seems familiar, Dr Mike Jenkins is well known to some in Worcestershire as he was the Head of various Medical Organisations relating to Education and Professional regulation. “The History of Place Names in England and Worcestershire” is available at alison’s bookshop @ £ 11.99. RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker
ALONG THE SEVERN TO DEERHURST Continuing our Summer series of strolls along waterways, this month we take the Severn Way from the edge of Tewkesbury to the historic little village of Deerhurst, writes Jack B. Walker.

This is a ‘there and back’ walk, although if you have OS maps 179 and 190, it is possible to negotiate a return route around the golf course. Please note, too, that there are cattle in the riverside meadows so do please keeps dogs under control around them. We set off from the small car park and picnic area at the riverside end of Lower Lode Lane in Tewkesbury. From here there is a tantalising glimpse of the inn on the opposite bank - to which a ferry service sometimes operates. From the car park, head in a southerly direction along the bank towards Cheltenham College Boathouse. This is the centre of operation for the famous public school’s rowing teams. Go through the gate (1) and carry on along the footpath, with the mighty River Severn to your right. You are now walking on a long distance footpath, the Severn Way, which runs from the source of the river on the Welsh mountain Plynlimon, and ends at Severn Beach near Bristol.
We won’t be covering 210 miles today, but it is a most pleasant 3.5 mile stroll to the historic village of Deerhurst. The route is pretty simple - just follow the river! At point (2) there is a footpath that strikes off towards Tewkesbury Park, and at point (3) we reach more open countryside as we approach Deerhurst. St Mary’s Priory Church
Odda’s Chapel
Leave the riverbank at point (4) by a large tree, and take the track over to Odda’s Chapel. Now under the stewardship of English Heritage (small fee payable), the Saxons were worshipping here in 1056, when the chapel was first dedicated. Interestingly, though, there is evidence that the stones used to build it came from a nearby Roman
villa. This makes the fabric of the building some 1800 years old. Attached to a halftimbered barn, Odda’s Chapel was used as a cottage for many years. An inscribed stone found in an orchard nearby proclaimed ‘Duke Odda ordered this hall built and dedicated to the Holy Trinity, in memory of his brother Aelfric, who was taken up from this place.’ Leaving the chapel, bear right and follow the lane around the bend. Note here the sturdy metal gates, which are part of Deerhurst’s flood defences. Go through the gates (5) and turn left along the path to reach
the priory church of St Mary - which also of great historical interest. The buildings to the right of the church were once part of a very important abbey, which was functioning before the time of Edward the Confessor - who was crowned in 1043. Inside the church has many interesting story boards that tell you more about the history of the priory, and some of the curious features in and around the building. The return route from here simply retraces the outward route along the river. PLEASE NOTE it is not possible to undertake this walk in times of flood.

Tiny grass seeds = Big Problem Expert advice on protecting your dog from the dreaded summer problem of grass seeds from Head Vet Brad Cooper of Folly Gardens: Grass seed season usually runs from May to October depending upon the weather conditions. The emergence of grass seeds causes one of the most painful, distressing and life-threatening conditions affecting dogs.
Sometimes they remain shallow and can be easily pulled out manually but usually heavy sedation or general anaesthetic is required. The seed is often invisible on X-rays so, in the past, this meant several ‘blind attempts ‘ to locate it but at Folly Gardens we have invested in a video endoscope so that we can trace the grass seeds and remove them more easily. As always, prevention is better than cure so I’ll be checking my dogs’ paws at least once a day - please do the same with your four-legged friends.
Prevent Grass Seed Problems: All dogs, especially long haired breeds, benefit from having their paws, toes and ears trimmed short in Summer and Autumn. All breeds are susceptible, especially if walked in meadows or woodland. Spaniel breeds, cockapoos, Jack Russells and Westies are particularly vulnerable because of their hairy ears and feet. Grass seeds have evolved to be distributed. Their minute size and barbed shape means they easily attach themselves to fur and travel only one way. Often a seed will embed itself between the toes, penetrate the skin, then burrow deep into the sensitive tissues of the foot, resulting in extreme pain, discomfort, infection and lameness. Time and vigilance are of the essence as the longer a grass seed is left untreated, the more likely it is to track up the paw, armpit, ear or groin. At Folly Gardens we have removed grass seeds from dog’s chests months after the “grass seed season”. We have found them in muscles, buried deep within the abdomen and even in the liver! They can be a huge problem - those little seeds should not be underestimated!
Every inch of your dog should be routinely checked for grass seeds after every walk. Take extra special care in checking between toes, around the ears, eyelids, nose and lip folds where seeds get stuck. Look out for head-shaking, paw-licking, frantic pawing of the ear, sneezing, nasal discharge (a tell-tale sign of a migrating seed) and lethargy. In the event of any of these symptoms, always seek treatment immediately from one of our veterinary team. Spread the word: tell your dog-walking friends

It is time that we featured Priors Park in this series, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society. One reason is that the then would be the green fields of “Priors Ground”, which was bought by the then Town Council in 1918 to provide decent housing for alley dwellers. The first homes, however, were built in Gloucester Road and then in Foresters Road in 1913. The name Prior’s Park was bestowed in 1926 and ever since then the estate has developed providing homes in different stages. And, as we can see with Seymour Place, redevelopment has taken place. During the recent Covid Lockdown, James Baker of PPNP has set up a group of local enthusiasts, working with me, to start writing a history of the Park. We have met thanks to Zoom on the internet and our first project was entitled The Most Perfect Childhood, 1953-1968 and researched by very enthusiastic group members. We now hope [if restrictions pass into history] that we shall be able to provide a display of our work and widen our members to those - who do not use the internet - by meet-

So the season is underway, the weather has improved and we’re all heading out in search of new plants. I hope you’ve done a bit of research before buying. You’ll need to know what their water requirements are, drainage, light, feed, resistance to trampling, disease etc. but the factor that I see most people get wrong is hardiness. The RHS produce a list that gives ratings from H1a (heated tropical greenhouse) to H7 (fully hardy, even in UK uplands). The list is invaluable, but the criteria need to be observed in their entirety because the temperature ranges are a bit misleading and don’t take exposure or damp or differing/ persistent frosts into account. So many times I’ve had people suggest I grow something they’ve

seen growing in the South of Italy or in Florida and after a cursory glance at the temperature ratings, they’re convinced it’ll be fine at almost 1000ft in the Cotswolds.

Flowers for the Cross Volunteers from Tewkesbury in Bloom have been supplying and maintaining the beautiful summer floral memorial displays at The Cross for many years to acknowledge the sacrifice of our town’s service men and women. The plants are supplied by local nurseryman Brian Williams from Knightsbridge Nursery based just off Coombe Hill (formerly of Cornerways Nursery) and this year Laurence and his team at The Cross House Tavern will be sponsoring the displays. Laurence has sponsored the displays in previous years, and has generously agreed to continue to support this initiative for 2021. This year the troughs which encircle the The Cross will be filled with red begonias and petunias to give a vibrant and long lasting display all summer long for a befitting tribute on behalf of Tewkesbury residents.

At last, we were able to meet face to face for our June meeting, and about 18 members enjoyed a socially distanced picnic on a lovely June day in Victoria Gardens. Such a welcome change from only seeing each other on a computer screen via Zoom. For many of our members it was the first time they had seen each other since last March. Marguerite Shaw had compiled a stunning scrapbook of the year of the pandemic which she presented to our president, Sylvia Taylor. We are now really looking forward to when we can again welcome members, both old and new to regular meetings, which we will be held at 2 p.m. every second Wednesday of the month at the Wheatpieces community hall. Tendons and Ligaments Tendons and ligaments are similar in their construction, being made up of fibrous connective tissue. However, there are many differences which separate these two soft tissue structures. Tendons connect muscle to bone and ligaments connect bone to bone. Tendons need to be able to relay information about stretch in the muscle so that the muscle is not damaged. The cells in the tendon which do this are called Golgi tendon organs. They response to increased stretch and will limit overuse. Of course, if the information in ignored by us then damage to the tendon can occur. Ligaments have poor blood supply and limited stretch. This means they can be damaged and take some time to heal. During this healing process the sense of joint position can be altered, and this can create a feeling of weakness in the affected joint. The naming of the injury to these structures is confusingly similar. A
tendon will be strained whereas a ligament will be sprained. However, if the anatomical structure which has been injured, has been diagnosed correctly then the treatment will be able to be prescribed correctly in order to heal and repair any damage. As mentioned, ligaments have a poor blood supply and rely on the blood supply of surrounding structures. Tendons have a better blood supply than ligaments, but it is not as good as muscle. Therefore, when the

connective tissues are injured, increasing the blood flow to the area is paramount to healing. Ice packing will create the constriction of blood vessels followed by dilation of these vessels when the ice is removed. This creates a flushing effect to the damaged area and will promote healing. Budding young footballers are turning out in force every Saturday morning in Twyning. Club spokesman Steven Wilcox told Tewkesbury Direct a little about the club’s roaring success. “In February 2020 we had eight children playing with make-shift goals on the village green. “Since then we’ve gone through a Covid year and now we have over forty members, 410 year old, ~30% girls, eight coaches, equipment and a hired pitch to meet at every Saturday morning. “The whole ethos of is centred around inclusive fun, and providing affordable football. “Many children who may not have normally considered even playing now do, and they really seem to enjoy it! “From the affordable side it’s less than £1 per session! “Football is the biproduct to some degree.”

My wife Michelle has been outstanding looking after our four children almost singlehandedly, and also coming out with me on training swims to enable me to train for this ridiculously ambitious swim.
