Lauren Tierney ‘20 was selected as a National Merit Scholar and Markus Schroder ’20 earned Commended Student status in the 2020 Merit Scholarship Program. Their efforts placed them among the 50,000 highest scores in the program.
U.S. MERCHANT MARINE ACADEMY APPOINTMENT
Teddy Brunger ’20 accepted an appointment to the United States Merchant Marine Academy to major in Marine Engineering Systems and continue his football career.
U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY APPOINTMENT Following in the footsteps of his parents, Emilio Quiroz ’20 accepted an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy.
2019 NCEA SETON SCHOLAR
Yolanda Aybar Delgado ‘21 was one of six students throughout the nation recognized as an NCEA Seton Scholar. Yolanda, her parents, and host parents were flown to Maryland for the presentation of the prestigious NCEA Seton Awards. Yolanda’s academic achievement, character and community service made her stand out above the rest. Each Seton Scholar earned a $2,000 scholarship.

Maddie Henry ‘21 won the Grand Prize for the national Scholastic PSA Contest for Creative Safety Ideas. Students in grades 6–12 created storyboards or scripts to help promote the importance of all passengers wearing a seat belt while in a vehicle. Maddie won $1,000 plus a trip to NYC to film the PSA. The TV show Teen Kids News featured the PSA.

Joseph Stokes ‘21 was promoted to Chief Petty Officer, the highest rank attainable in the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps, placing him among the top 3% of the over 12,000 members nationwide.

SERVICE MCC missionaries in action
MCC missionaries spent a week on location in the Dominican Republic and St. Croix. We are proud of these participants giving of their time to be the hands and feet of Christ to those in need.
To Botswana with love MCC in conjunction with West Shore and Indialantic Soccer Club collected soccer uniforms, training vests, soccer balls, and cones and shipped them to Botswana. It’s wonderful these groups came together to make these donations possible to benefit so many underprivileged children!
Christmas joy at Sea Pines The MCC band and choir delighted our neighbors at Sea Pines with the sights and sounds of the Christmas season.

SERVICE DAILY BREAD MCC sophomores and juniors dedicated 80 hours of service at Daily Bread in the Hygiene Center and Soup Kitchen. Our school also sponsored four donation drives throughout the year.
Hurricane Preparedness International Program students helped elderly neighbors prepare for Hurricane Dorian.
Restore our Shores MCC students visited the Brevard Zoo to take part in a Caring for God’s Creation retreat. During their visit, the students created Oyster Habitats used to help preserve the Indian River Lagoon.
MCC recognized for exceptional service Bishop John Noonan and Diocese of Orlando Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Mr. Henry Fortier presented MCC with the St. Teresa of Calcutta Award for Faith in Action. The continued service we provide at Daily Bread earned us this special recognition. This is the second time in three years that we received this honor for making a difference in our local community.
Senior Service Day The Class of 2020 visited five local senior citizen centers to spend time, play games, and bring Christian love to others.
Lourdes Barba Ridyard Memorial Award Lourdes Barba Ridyard ’83 was a member of the community of Melbourne Central Catholic for over thirty years, serving as a student, parent, and teacher. As the Learning Lab instructor, Lourdes portrayed our Franciscan virtues to her students, embodying kindness, patience, and love. After battling cancer, Lourdes passed away in 2013. CORONAVIRUS RESPONSE E-Learning push touches mind and heart On Friday, March 13, Melbourne Central Catholic High School, like all Orlando diocesan schools, announced it would be moving to an E-Learning environment due to the global COVID-19 pandemic and the accompanying restrictions outlined by the state of Florida.
Some of the inspired outgrowths included: WORDS OF COMFORT
Students and staff wrote letters to residents of nursing homes allowing us to deliver over 750 letters to four local nursing homes. MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
MCC’s Key Club delivered bouquets of flowers to two nearby assisted living facilities.
MCC quickly assembled a plan, communicated frequently, and adjusted the plan accordingly in the ensuing weeks, earning high marks from parents who appreciated the school’s preparedness and that students lost no instructional time.
CLASS OF 2024
The MCC E-Learning model grew to be multifaceted. The virtual activities that took place outside the classroom ensured students stayed connected during an uncertain time.

We placed yard signs on their front lawns to welcome the newest members of our family. HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTIONS
We held a virtual ceremony to honor students for their achievement of academic excellence. The week-long remote celebration of our Hustler pride consisted of themed days and photo contests. SALUTE TO THE CLASS OF 2020
We honored each graduate under the Hustler Stadium lights and lit scoreboard at 8:20 PM (military time of 20:20) and yard signs were delivered to their homes. VALEDICTORIAN LUNCHEON
We delivered lunches to the homes of our 16 Valedictorians so together they could enjoy a remote luncheon with members of the MCC Administration team. COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES
We recognized each member of the class during a virtual awards ceremony and the Baccalaureate Mass with Bishop Noonan was live-streamed. The Graduation ceremony combined the personal with the virtual for our graduates and their families. Each graduate was able to walk across the stage to receive their diploma joined by a small group of classmates. A videographer recorded and combined clips from the day-long celebration as a keepsake. TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK
We honored our dedicated teachers with pictures and video messages of gratitude from students and parents. Yard signs were placed on their lawns to make sure they knew their efforts were appreciated. WEEKLY MASS

The MCC Virtual Art Show demonstrated the creative brilliance of students in the Visual Arts program during the 2019-20 school year, in and out of the actual classroom. These pictures are only a small representation of the individual and collaborative artworks that were part of this display. It has become very evident to the world during the pandemic that the arts are an extremely valuable part of our human experience from singing over balconies to a newfound joy in painting and so much more. MCC Visual Arts teacher Mrs. Rozengota hopes we retain this knowledge as we heal to a new normal in our society and celebrating our students’ art is a wonderful way for us to do just that.

Baseball Alumni Game Every year, MCC Baseball Coach Tom Dooley invites his former players to dust off their baseball gloves and return to campus for a friendly game against our current Varsity Hustlers. ALUMNI PROFILE ABE MATAR, MD CLASS OF 2005 Abraham (Abe) Matar, Melbourne Central Catholic class of 2005, will always be an athlete at heart - and he has MCC to thank for that. Having grown up playing sports his entire life, some of Abe’s best high school memories involve athletics. Abe recalls being in the stands his freshman year when long time classmates Leigh Pauley and Dominique Caravano helped the Hustlers win the 3A girls basketball state championship. He also helped cheer on both boys and girls soccer teams during their 2003 state championship runs. But without a doubt, Abe’s fondest high school memories involve his time playing on the basketball team with members of his 2005 graduating class: Andre Balta, Scott Carmichael, Ryan Dourney, Larry Loschiavo, John Palsis, Spencer Parrish, David Walker, and Tommy Wilson. “I’ll never forget the long van rides to away games, the early morning 5:30 am practices, offseason conditioning on the football field, and the pregame meals. Those will always be some of my best memories”. Abe credits Coach Rob Terry and Steve Henderson for consistently pushing him to reach his potential. “Coach Terry and coach Henderson always pushed me to be better on the basketball court, and I took that mentality with me and applied it in college and medical school”. Most importantly, MCC provided Abe with the educational foundation to succeed in college and eventually medical school. He believes that one teacher in particular contributed most to his academic development - Mrs. Joy Patterson. “Mrs. Patterson was one of the most influential teachers I had because she expected us to perform at a university level in her class. After taking her AP English/Literature class, I was more than prepared for my freshman year of college”. He remembers that she found creative and fun ways to keep students engaged. “I distinctly remember Mrs. Patterson challenging each of us to learn and act out the infamous “To be, or not to be” soliloquy from Shakespeare’s Hamlet in her class. This was one of my first experiences with public speaking, and it was valuable in preparing me for the numerous presentations I’ve given since.” The son of immigrant parents, one a writer and philosopher, the other a college professor, there was never any doubt that Abe would pursue higher education. However, Abe credits guidance counselor Mrs. Susan Reibsame with helping guide him through the college admissions process and putting him in a position to succeed. “Mrs. Reibsame was absolutely phenomenal. At times the college admissions process seemed daunting, but she made it manageable. Every time I went to her office feeling overwhelmed, she would reassure me, and we would come up with a clear plan for moving ahead. I always left her office feeling confident that everything would work out the way it was supposed to”. Abe ultimately matriculated into Emory University in Atlanta and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry. Towards the end of his college career, Abe developed an interest in medicine, specifically organ transplantation, after working in a research

laboratory that studied treatments for Type 1 diabetes. “I remember watching my first transplant as a junior in college and I was in awe. I knew from that point on what I wanted to do with my life and that was to be a transplant surgeon.” With a new-found interest in transplantation, Abe moved to Boston following graduation from Emory and took a position in an organ transplantation research lab at Harvard Medical School. There he spent three years working on developing new ways to trick the body’s immune system into accepting an organ transplant without the need for anti-rejection medications. It was here that he also met his lovely future wife, Rebecca, an immunologist. After three years in Boston, Abe moved back to Florida and attended medical school at the nearby University of Central Florida College of Medicine, where he was named to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society for his academic achievements. Following medical school, Abe returned to Emory University for a seven-year residency training program in general surgery. As part of the seven-year program, Abe came full circle and recently completed a two-year research sabbatical in the Emory Transplant Center, where he had first developed his interest in transplantation 10 years earlier. Abe will complete his general surgical training in 2023 and plans to pursue an abdominal transplant fellowship, where he will gain specialized training in kidney and liver transplantation and care for patients with end-stage kidney and liver failure. “Transplantation is such a rewarding field because you can really change someone’s life for the better when they get a new organ. It’s like a new lease on life”. Abe currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia with his wife Rebecca and their two-year-old daughter Eva. He can’t wait to take Eva back to his hometown and show her the places, like MCC, which helped shape the person he is today. Go Hustlers!
FACULTY PROFILE RITA HERSHBACH ENGLISH TEACHER 1994-PRESENT Rita Herschbach was born in the South Bronx, New York, and spent her early years at a Catholic elementary school and Cardinal Spellman High School. She was always drawn to the service of helping, training, and educating others, so decided to obtain her teaching credentials by attending Rollins College and UCF. She started working at Brevard Community College and then was hired by Our Lady of Lourdes as the 6th grade religion and language arts teacher and boys’ baseball coach. The following year MCC hired her as the freshmen English teacher and newspaper adviser. Through the years, she has advised the school newspaper, which placed “All-Florida,” took students to journalism conventions in St. Louis, Kansas City, and Seattle, coached softball, advised the National Honor Society which twice had its service projects placed in the top ten in the nation, traveled to leadership conferences with students in Dallas, Baltimore, Boston and Washington, DC. headed English as the Department Chair, was honored as “Faculty of the Year,” spoke at two diocesan conferences (Orlando and St. Augustine), was a finalist for the Orlando Diocese 21st Century teacher of the year, coached the Speech and Debate team, created the broadcast journalism course at MCC, has been an AP Reader for the AP English Language exam, coached bowling and charted MCC’s first Key Club, which won a national service award for our senior citizen prom. For three years, she took Key Clubbers to the state convention. For the last ten years, she has also taught online for Florida Tech.
Perhaps the students are the ones who have kept her at MCC. There have been times she thought of trying something different, another school maybe, another level, but she would always think of the students she taught in freshman year who would say, “Can’t wait to get you next year,” or the parents who tell her how much of an influence she was on their child and that they can’t wait until she teaches their younger child. She always felt that by leaving, she was letting her students down. Maybe more so it is the students who are in college or have graduated college, law school, medical school, the academies, etc. who still email once in a while and tell her how much they used what she taught them: “Anyone who took her class seriously not only left with a better
understanding of the English language but an appreciation for someone so dedicated to helping her students.” JOSH GOINS ‘13 “She takes such great pride in her work, wants her students to do their personal best, and has a true interest in making sure her students grasp key skills and knowledge to help them to learn and grow.” DANNY HAIRE ‘20

“He did not come to be served, but to serve all that He encountered.” mark 10:45 On May 23, 2020 family, friends and former classmates were devastated to learn of the passing of a beloved alumnus, Mikey Goodwin (Class of 2019). Heartbreak resonated throughout the Hustler community. Mikey was a vibrant 19-yearold college student when diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a rare and deadly form of brain cancer. His courageous fight lasted just three months before he gained his angel wings and was wrapped in the loving arms of Jesus. Although his earthly life was cut entirely too short, the impact that he made on so many will live on forever. Mikey’s quiet strength and zest for life engaged others and drew them closer to the “real” Mikey: a faith-filled, loving advocate for all. He embodied the Franciscan virtues of compassion, humility, brotherhood, joy and service to others. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need, advocate for the underdog, offer encouraging words or pitch in wherever needed. His love for his friends and teammates was boundless. Service to others was at the core of Mikey’s being. Whether it was in the classroom, in the hallway or on the playing field, he was always ready to lift the spirits of others. His deep empathy and compassion was ever-present and brightened the day of
anyone feeling down. With his easy smile and kind words, Mikey impacted those around him on a daily basis. With courageous faith, the Goodwin family is honoring Mikey’s incredible spirit by helping others – just as Mikey would want. They have established the Mikey Strong Foundation with a mission to help fight DIPG but also to honor Mikey by awarding scholarships to deserving athletes at MCC. The first of four annual awards were given out on Senior Night held on October 23. The recipients were: Tevon “Scooter” Brown (Football), DeAndre Pearson (Football), and Aaron Turner (Boy’s Golf). Two more scholarships will be awarded in the spring to senior boys participating in basketball and lacrosse. Mikey dedicated his life to helping others. Through the generosity of our alumni, grandparents, staff, and friends, Melbourne Central Catholic has been blessed with financial gifts and support to achieve our mission. OUR PRESIDENT
Dear Members of the Melbourne Central Catholic High School Family, The fall Friday night scene was both familiar and surreal. The Hustler football team battled local rival Holy Trinity in a back and forth game. Familiar. Spectators wearing masks spread out through the home stands keeping appropriate distance from each other cheered the home team. Surreal. As the first half ended, a fan approached me asking if I was an administrator. Familiar and surreal as you never know to what the administrator question will lead. I introduced myself and we started talking about MCC. A member of the Class of 1974, Ray Sands reminisced about his time at the school, the 1973 state championship basketball team (Ray played an integral role), and the terrific foundation MCC provided as he moved on to the Air Force Academy. Now the Director of Chapter Development for the Gary Sinese Foundation, Ray comes back to campus whenever he can to catch a football game or basketball game. MCC remains a special part of his life because the faculty here reinforced the importance of hard work, teamwork, and perseverance -- values his family stressed at home. Ray’s story is one I heard often from both graduates and parents, in my first year as President – an MCC education goes beyond the classroom. Value centered and grounded in the charism of St. Francis of Assisi, we will always strive for academic excellence and spiritual integrity. The pages that follow give us the opportunity to thank those who so generously support our mission. They give us the opportunity to thank those who support our students. The generosity of alumni, parents, grandparents and friends helps Melbourne Central Catholic High School provide a quality Catholic education to a diverse group of young men and women each year. This is a gift made by a provision in one’s will naming Melbourne Central Catholic High School as beneficiary. It can reduce estate taxes.
A Gift of Cash most often in the form of a personal check payable to Melbourne Central Catholic High School (or gifts made via MasterCard, Visa or Discover).
• Mandatory retirement account distributions • A Gift of Stock may be transferred to Melbourne Central Catholic High School avoiding any capital gains tax. • A Matching Gift from a corporation. Several hundred U.S. companies participate in this program.
Gift Restrictions Although many investors choose to allow the school to use their gifts where they are most needed, we fund several special programs and projects through restricted gifts each year. These include gifts for enhanced equipment, programs and facilities.
Charitable Gift Annuity This gift allows the donor to receive benefits for his/her lifetime and to qualify for a charitable tax deduction. This form of support is attractive when one has highly appreciated assets. Melbourne Central Catholic High School requires a minimum gift of $5,000 to establish this gift.
Life Insurance If Melbourne Central Catholic High School is named as the owner and beneficiary of a life insurance policy, the policy premiums become eligible as a tax-deductible gift.
The MCC Fund Gifts help us meet the critical needs of families requesting tuition assistance and impact all aspects of school operations. We receive gifts on every business day of the year. Any member of the MCC family may make a gift or pledge at any time during the year (in our annual report we will acknowledge gifts made during each fiscal year, July 1 – June 30). It is important to note that there is no official “kick-off” for MCC Fund gifts.

“As an alum along with both of my brothers, it was the obvious choice to conclude Aaron’s parochial school (Our Lady Of Lourdes) education at MCC. My husband was also the product of parochial school education in Indianapolis (Holy Spirit). A faith-based education that emphasizes the beatitudes, Catholic-Christian values and strong moral character is essential to the growth of young adults, perhaps what is lacking in today’s society but stressed at MCC. The emphasis on college prep and academics were also pivotal in our choice to make the sacrifice to send Aaron to MCC.
