Wow, the year appears to be flying by, as we are already in the month of April, and it’s not too far from being over. Spring is upon us and in full bloom. The flowers are a beautiful sight for eyes that may have been dismayed by the greys of winter. It’s also time for us to be on watch, as the Bumble Bees are very active, yet they mean us no harm. I thank God for blessing me with another season to enjoy all His marvels and grandeur.
What if tomorrow didn’t arrive? All of your plans, hopes and dreams wouldn’t have a street to park on. What if everything that you decided to put off until tomorrow never happened? There would be no reason to save for a rainy day, and you could spare someone the trouble of making promises. What if your last opportunity seemingly expired today? What would you do?
With Spring, it also signifies continuity, and the repetition of life. The goals that I made for myself in January haven’t changed, however the journey of completing them has, and that is not too surprising, because I am accustomed to things never being the same. In my quiet time with God, He has reminded me that while things are often changing around me, He doesn’t, and in knowing this, I am reassured that regardless of what things may look like, God is right there in the thick of things with me. He always has His children on His mind and promises to never leave us nor forsake us.
I’ve been told that I often seem like I do too much. Honestly, I feel like I am not doing enough and I’m a firm believer in knowing that God wouldn’t put anything on me that I couldn’t handle. I sometimes wonder how life would be if I chose to sit idle and accept what it presented to me. I have found that to be very boring. In my opinion, opportunity is a blessing that isn’t afforded to everyone. A challenge to me is an adventure. What is the worst that can happen? If I do nothing, I fail, and if I try I don’t, but instead learn something new about myself. Relinquish your pride and in return acquire life.
With the test and trials that life presents me, I must admit that some have been breathtaking. I have questioned God as to why they were happening. The adages, “God chooses His strongest for the toughest battles” and “He will never put more on us than we can handle” have accurately aligned with my life. In hindsight, I can only thank God for the test and trials as they have showed me where I was the weakest and most vulnerable. God’s testing has also strengthened me, and led me to even more of His grooming, as I have accepted this as the life of a believer.
The best advice ever given to me happened when someone told me to make my tomorrow happen today. In doing so I have pressed my way through doors with a key that only hope provided. I have also learned the difference between what God blesses me with and what life can burden me with as well. I compare it to knowing when to be confident and when to be quiet, because someone may get it confused with being arrogant.
Life is but a whisper and it flies by really fast. For many, the goal is to get as much accomplished as we can in the time that God allows us. I truly believe that God doesn’t have a problem with His children aspiring, just as long as He is included in them. I believe that one of the biggest ways to welcome disappoint into our lives is to spend its entirety in the driver’s seat and not allowing God to lead. Either way, He will always meet us at our point of destiny. I choose to strive for a Godfilled Purposed.

General Inquiries

Make you tomorrow happen today, but most importantly make it count. Life is but a whisper and we must put ourselves in a position to hear what it is telling us.

“My book shares the story of my life, and how God has been there through it all, and has always directed my path”

La-Sheka Melvin of Durham, NC, is a genuine example of an overcomer. A mother of five and grandmother of two, La-Sheka is a woman of faith, and declares that without God, there is no way that she would be in a position to do the things she does today.
At the young age of 12, La-Sheka lost her father, Ronald Melvin, to violence. He was murdered, and the case remains unsolved today. Her response to her loss encouraged La-Sheka to launch a campaign focused on domestic violence to help other kids and families who may deal with a similar situation.
La-Sheka is a member of Lincoln Memorial Baptist Church, born and raised. She is currently preparing to receive her Associates Degree in Biblical Studies from Safe Haven Interdenominational Bible College and Training Institute in Raleigh. She is also seeking a degree in ADM from Vance Granville Community College. As if she didn’t have a full plate, La-Sheka finds time to work at Duke Hospital in Durham as a Financial Care Counselor and serves as Vice President of Blacktivate Affinity Group at Duke.
La-Sheka is also the owner of Lovely Wilks Creations and Designs. As an event planner, her company helps to make her clients’ dreams come true. The vision for her design company began at church, La-Sheka says. “Everybody asks me to decorate the church events. I began with the Pastor Aid department, and it soon branched off from that.” Some of the services she offers include event planning for weddings, coordinating events, funerals, repasses, birthday parties, and more.
“With my event planning company, sometimes I get BrideZillas, those who may try to change the atmosphere or the way things are done. I counter their energy with meditation, and I work to get a clear understanding of my client’s needs. I allow God to use me.”
La-Sheka is also authoring a book, The La-Sheka Melvin Story: Broken But Not Forgotten, which she says is a story about her life. “My book shares the story of my life, and how God has been there through it all, and has always directed my path,” she says. La-Sheka adds that she has a passion for helping and serving others. She is a supervisor of the Durham County Youth Missionary Department. She is also an advocate for Stop The Silent Domestic Violence, which is a project she launched as a response to the loved ones she has lost to domestic violence. More than anything, La-Sheka loves to help people and meet them at their point of need. Whether it be with decorating, serving in a missionary capacity, or in a nursing facility, La-Sheka heart remains in a postured position to serve.
Wearing all of the hats she does often comes with many challenges. Yet, LaSheka finds ways to manage each of them while keeping her goals and purpose in perspective. “With my event planning company, sometimes I get Bride-Zillas, those who may try to change the atmosphere or the way things are done. I counter their energy with meditation, and I work to get a clear understanding of my client’s needs. I allow God to use me,” she says. Her ability to think outside the box, matched with her desire to help make things beautiful, usually helps her to get through the rough patches in business.
While things are going great for La-Sheka, she admits there are a few things, if given the opportunity, she would change. One is listening more and starting her educational journey sooner. “I would have embraced my journey in school and followed the proper channels instead of going all the way around the block to get there,” she says.

“If a mother is trying to leave their abuser, if they have a child who is a male, they can’t come to the shelter with them because of that. I want to create a space that will allow families to remain together.”
While she experienced tragedy at a young age, a purpose was revealed. As she realized her gift of design and creativity, avenues opened that led to an event and design company. La-Sheka shares that her faith in God and having a strong and consistent support system have also played a significant role in helping her to become who she is. “I have a strong family. My mom and grandmother, who recently passed, have always been there for me,” she says. La-Sheka also credits Leon Goldston for stepping into the gap to be a father figure for her after her father was killed.
Looking ahead, La-Sheka says her goal is to own an event center. She adds that some of the proceeds will support her Stop The Silence Domestic Violence movement. “If a mother is trying to leave their abuser, if they have a child who is a male, they can’t come to the shelter with them because of that. I want to create a space that will allow families to remain together,” she says.
It’s obvious that La-Sheka has shaped her life to fulfill the purpose that God has called her to. She is also a sound reminder of what perseverance and determination will take you. To purchase a copy of La-Sheka’s book, please contact her directly.

Her design company provides event design and floral services that reflect creativity, excellence, and attention to detail. Creative Expressions Events & Floral Designs, LLC, is based in Union County, SC, and proudly serves clients throughout the upstate and midlands regions, and is available for travel to accommodate event needs elsewhere. Mary and her team provide comprehensive event and floral design services tailored to create memorable and personalized experiences. Additionally, they offer full-service event design, including the rental of décor elements such as linens, chairs, lighting, and specialty furniture to enhance the overall aesthetic of each occasion. They also specialize in custom floral design, creating bespoke arrangements that reflect each client’s style, personality, and vision. Mary says, “Clients have the unique option of selecting either fresh florals or high-quality faux flowers, allowing for flexibility in design, longevity, and budget while maintaining elegance and visual impact. Every service is delivered with a commitment to creativity, attention to detail, and excellence in presentation.”
Besides being a very successful event coordinator and designer, Mary is an accomplished educator and work-based learning coordinator with a strong background in business, technology, and student career development. She brings extensive experience in both secondary and post-secondary education, and has dedicated her career to preparing students for success in academic and professional environments. She currently serves as a Work-based Learning Coordinator, connecting students with meaningful internship opportunities that align with their career interests and workforce needs. Prior to this role, she taught Business and Technology, equipping students with practical skills in computing, applications, and professional readiness.
As a wife, mother of three, and grandmother of five, Mary is a great example of what the combination of faith and hard work looks like. She is a devoted minister and faithfully serves her church community, and is deeply committed to service, mentorship, and lifelong learning. Mary holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Management with a major in Computer Science, Software and Applications from Limestone University. Mary also earned a Master of Business Administration in Management and Strategy from Western Governors University and a Master of Information Systems from the University of Phoenix.
“Clients have the unique option of selecting either fresh florals or high-quality faux flowers, allowing for flexibility in design, longevity, and budget while maintaining elegance and visual impact.”

Mary shares that Creative Expressions Events & Floral Design, LLC was established in 2007. She was inspired by a longstanding passion for interior design and creative expression. She previously served as a Home Interior & Gift representative, and in that capacity, Mary developed an eye for design and décor. “When the company underwent changes, I redirected my talents toward creating custom arrangements for private homes and designing decorative elements for my church community. The business formally took shape when my niece requested that I design her wedding. Although initially hesitant to undertake such a significant responsibility, I accepted the challenge, obtained my business license, and successfully executed my first large-scale event—serving 250 guests. The experience affirmed both my capability and calling in event and floral design,” Mary shared.
Mary’s creative vision is continually shaped by inspiration from high-end interior designers, interior design publications, and floral design magazines. She remains attentive to emerging trends while maintaining a commitment to timeless elegance and personalized design. When asked what she loves most about what she does, Mary says it’s the meaningful relationships that she builds with her clients. “Many of those relationships grow over time, with families returning for multiple celebrations and entrusting me with each special occasion they host. It is deeply rewarding to see a client’s vision thoughtfully brought to life and to witness the joy and surprise on their faces when they experience the finished design. Being part of moments that help transform a dream into reality provides a profound sense of fulfillment and purpose.”
Mary shares that her company has been significantly impacted by the clients and families she’s been able to serve. She adds, “Their trust, continued support, and referrals have played a vital role in expanding the business and shaping its reputation for excellence. Inspiration drawn from leading interior designers and industry publications has continually elevated my creative approach and commitment to quality. Together, these relationships and influences have strengthened my dedication to delivering personalized designs that reflect each client’s vision with elegance and care. My design inspiration for Creative Expressions Events & Floral Design, LLC is drawn from a blend of classic elegance and emerging trends in interior and floral design. I regularly study the work of high-end interior designers and explore leading interior design and floral publications to remain current with color palettes, textures, and styling techniques. I am also inspired by the individuality of each client—their personality, vision, and story serve as the foundation for every design. By combining industry trends with personal expression, I strive to create distinctive environments that are both timeless and meaningful.”
While wearing the many hats she does and managing a successful event planning company, understandably, Mary has faced some challenges. One of the most significant challenges, she says, occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Like many in the events industry, the business experienced widespread cancellations, shutdowns, and the complex task of rescheduling weddings and special events. Client’s—particularly brides— were navigating uncertainty about whether their celebrations could proceed as planned. Through consistent communication, flexibility, and a commitment to honoring each client’s vision, we successfully rescheduled events once restrictions were lifted. The trust and patience of our clients were instrumental in

helping the business persevere during that unprecedented time,” she said. Another ongoing challenge for Mary has been building and maintaining a strong, dedicated team. “While event and floral design may appear effortless, the work requires extensive preparation, early mornings, late evenings, weekend commitments, and physically demanding setup. Establishing a team that shares the same work ethic, attention to detail, and commitment to excellence has been essential to delivering the high-quality service our clients expect. Through perseverance, clear standards, and shared purpose, these challenges have strengthened both the business and its foundation for continued growth.”
Many joys and moments of elation come with owning an event planning and design company. Mary has weathered both some highs a nd low moments, and she offers some advice to others who may have similar aspirations. She says, “I would encourage others to begin as early as possible and remain open to where their passions lead them. My journey taught me that experience in one field can meaningfully support success in another. Although my background is in education, my passion for event design has been equally strong, and integrating both has been incredibly rewarding. I would advise staying committed to continuous learning, building strong relationships, and confidently pursuing the work that aligns with your purpose.”

What is next for Mary and Creative Expressions Events and Floral Designs? Mary shares that she will continue to grow through her full-time commitment to serving clients. “Transitioning into the event industry as a retired educator will allow me to fully dedicate my time and creativity to designing more meaningful, memorable experiences. As I move forward, I will also integrate my educational background by offering classes and mentorship opportunities for new and aspiring event designers.”

Erykah Sampson of Hampton Roads, VA, is an overcomer. Her story is one of service, resilience, and reinvention. A proud military veteran, devoted mother, entrepreneur, and lifelong learner, she embodies dedication both professionally and personally.
For 10 years, Erykah served her country with honor in the United States Navy and the Army National Guard. Her time in uniform instilled in her a deep sense of discipline, leadership, and commitment—values that continue to shape every aspect of her life today. Transitioning from military service to civilian life, Erykah carried forward her mission-driven mindset and passion for helping others. Now based in Hampton Roads, Virginia, she is a trusted realtor and notary public, guiding individuals and families through some of the most important decisions of their lives.
Erykah’s professional journey is uniquely strengthened by her background in the medical field, where she developed a keen attention to detail, compassion, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Whether assisting clients with real estate transactions or ensuring important documents are executed with precision, Erykah approaches her work with integrity and care. Never one to stop growing, Erykah is currently pursuing her Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in Acquisition and Contract Management. Her academic path reflects her strategic mindset and long-term vision—continuing to expand her expertise while balancing career and family life.
Family is at the heart of everything she does. As a proud mother of two daughters, one serving in the Navy and the other pursuing her college education, Erykah beams with pride at the example of strength and ambition they represent. She also treasures her role as “Grandma” to her energetic three-year-old granddaughter, cherishing every moment spent together. Outside of her professional and academic commitments, Erykah embraces creativity and connection. She finds joy in baking and decorating cakes, cooking meals that bring loved ones together, gardening, and creating warm, meaningful experiences with family and friends. “For me, success is measured not only in achievements, but in impact—on my clients, my community, and especially my family.”
Erykah’s journey is a testament to the power of service, perseverance, and purpose. Whether in unifor m, in business, in the classroom, or at home, she continues to lead with heart and determination, building a legacy of excellence for the next generation.
In addition to all the other hats Erykah wears, she has found time to manage several businesses. One is Dream 2 Reality Homes, LLC, a real estate company, and Sampson Notary Services, LLC, a notary business. She officially launched Sampson Notary Services, LLC in May 2020. At the time, she was searching for a way to increase her income while also creating flexibility to be more present for her children, who were in middle and high school. “Family has always been my priority, and I wanted a path that allowed me to build something meaningful without sacrificing time with them. Interestingly, my journey into the notary field began when I refinanced my home. I met Seben Griffin, owner of Griffin Notary Services, who served as my notary during that process. After learning more about the profession, I was inspired by the opportunity it provided for independence and service. With his guidance on how to get started, I took the leap into entrepreneurship— and I haven’t looked back since,” she says.
In October 2022, Erykah expanded her vision and launched Dream 2 Reality Homes, LLC. Her real estate business was built from a deeply personal place. “As a veteran and first-time homebuyer, myself, I understand both the excitement and the uncertainty that can come with pursuing homeownership. Over the years, I met so many individuals, especially first-time buyers and fellow veterans—who dreamed of owning a home but didn’t know where to begin. I realized that my experiences, combined with my passion for service, uniquely positioned me to guide others through that journey. I wanted to help people not only purchase homes but also build wealth and long-term stability through real estate. For me, it’s more than a career, it’s about empowering others with the knowledge and confidence to turn their dreams into reality.”
“My children have been one of my greatest motivations. They may not have realized it at the time, but knowing they were watching me shaped many of my decisions. I wanted to model discipline, courage, faith, and ambition.”
Through Dream 2 Reality Homes, LLC, Erykah helps individuals and families turn their homeownership goals into reality, guiding them through the buying and selling process with integrity and dedication. With Sampson Notary Services, LLC, she provides professional and reliable notary services across Virginia, ensuring accuracy, confidentiality, and convenience for every client she serves.
When asked what she loves most about what she does, Erykah says it’s the opportunity to serve. “Serving my community isn’t just part of my career, it’s part of my purpose in life. Whether through real estate or notary work, I have the privilege of being present during some of the most important moments in people’s lives. In my real estate business, I get to walk alongside clients as they pursue homeownership, often one of their biggest goals. There’s nothing more fulfilling than handing someone the keys to their new home and knowing I played a role in helping them build stability and generational wealth. I especially love working with first-time homebuyers and veterans because I understand their journey personally. Seeing their confidence grow throughout the process is incredibly rewarding. Through my notary business, I serve in a different but equally meaningful way. I’m often part of significant milestones—refinances, purchases, powers of attorney, and other important life decisions. Being trusted to ensure those documents are handled with accuracy and professionalism is an honor I don’t take lightly.”
For Erykah to accomplish what she has, she has relied on a sound and supportive team. She shares there have been several people and experiences that have profoundly shaped both her life and career. She says, “First and foremost, my late grandmother had an incredible impact on me. She instilled in me the value of hard work, resilience, and perseverance. No matter the circumstances, she believed in earning everything with integrity and determination. That work ethic has carried me through the military, entrepreneurship, and higher education. My late best friend, whom I had the honor of serving alongside in the military, also played a significant role in my journey. He was one of my biggest encouragers. He constantly reminded me of my strength and potential, and he never hesitated to tell me how proud he was of me. His belief in me, especially during challenging seasons, gave me the confidence to pursue bigger goals and keep pushing forward. My children have been one of my greatest motivations. They may not have realized it at the time, but knowing they were watching me shaped many of my decisions. I wanted to model discipline, courage, faith, and ambition. I wanted them to see that obstacles don’t define your response to them does. Everything I strive for is rooted in being a positive example for them. Growing up in the foster care system for part of my childhood and experiencing significant negativity also impacted me deeply. Those early challenges could have defined my limits, but instead, they fueled my determination. I made a conscious decision to rise above my circumstances and live up to my full potential. Those humble beginnings gave me empathy, strength, and a relentless drive to build a life rooted in purpose and service. Each of these influences—love, loss, responsibility, and resilience—has shaped not only the professional I am today, but the woman behind the work.”
Stepping outside of her0 comfort zone, especially when it comes to networking, has been a very big challenge for Erykah. She adds, “Although I genuinely love helping people and building meaningful relationships, I am naturally an introvert. Putting myself out there consistently, attending events, and initiating conversations didn’t always come easily.” Another challenge for Erykah has been learning to ask for help. “I’ve always been independent and resourceful, often preferring to “figure it out” on my own. While that determination has served me well, entrepreneurship has taught me the value of collaboration, mentorship, and community. I have countered these challenges by learning that growth requires visibility. I’ve intentionally worked to become more comfortable in those spaces. I’ve have also come to understand that seeking guidance isn’t a weakness, it’s a strategy for growth. Each of these challenges has stretched me in positive ways. They’ve helped me build confidence, strengthen relationships, and become a more wellrounded business owner.”

Looking ahead, Erykah shares that she has many exciting plans for her business. Presently, she is focused on finishing her college degree and strengthening the foundations of Dream 2 Reality Homes, LLC, and Sampson Notary Services, LLC. “I want to continue providing exceptional service to my clients while expanding my skills, knowledge, and impact. Completing my Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in Acquisition and Contract Management will not only enhance my professional expertise but also position me to grow my businesses strategically and help even more people achieve their goals. My vision is to keep building, learning, and serving—turning both my dreams and the dreams of others into reality,” she says. h

Vuliwear is an elevated eyewear and lifestyle brand redefining how fashion, function, and intention come together. “Vuli” means “shade” in Swahili. Vuilwear came to life on June 27th, 2017, which happens to be National Sunglasses Day. Founded by Philadelphia, PA, native, and current South New Jersey resident, Dionne Ellison, the brand was created from a desire to offer more than accessories—it was built to deliver statement pieces that reflect individuality, confidence, and a deeper way of seeing.
Dionne shares that at the heart of Vuliwear is its distinctive lens-first design philosophy, where each style begins with the visual experience and evolves into a bold fashion expression. Known for striking silhouettes, insect-inspired lens artistry, and a commitment to quality craftsmanship, Vuliwear creates sunglasses exposing nature’s hidden beauty that are both visually captivating and purpose-driven. “Every pair is designed to elevate personal style while offering the UV protection and performance today’s consumer expects. Our focus on the lens is intentional. It’s the first thing people see when wearing sunglasses so it makes sense that it should be the priority, not only for its design but more importantly for the protection from harmful rays,” she says.
More than an eyewear label, Vuliwear is growing into a modern lifestyle house. Through its expansion into Vuli Life, the brand is extending its vision into accessories, fashion, art, and curated collaborations that reflect a broader expression of contemporary living. This next chapter includes innovative products such as the Beba crossbody bag, designed with both style and practicality in mind, further reinforcing the brand’s commitment to thoughtful design. “Eyewear is where we got our start. We are now expanding in to lifestyle accessories, and eventually activewear, art, and home. Fashion can expand and that is what I am really looking to do, is to build a fashion house,” she says.

As Vuliwear approaches its 10 Year Anniversary, Dionne shares that her focus is seeing beyond where the company currently is, and how it can be expanded. Her focus is also on generating generational wealth and utilizing the talents that are available in her immediate family. “My son helped design the Beba Bag, the crossbody bag for men. My sister does our sketches for our eyewear, and I have another sister that is an artist and seamstress,” she says. Her 10 Year Anniversary also comes with a few unique challenges. “There are more challenges than wins. When you are creating something new that people are not used to, that is when the true test comes in. You have to be able to take the compliments just as you take the criticism. Nothing happens overnight. You don’t know what you don’t know, until you start going through the process,” she says. Another challenge has been funding. Fortunately, when Dionne first started, she had three coworkers who invested in her idea and brand. Still, funding is something that she will need to continue her journey. Other challenges that Dionne has endured include logistical, motivational, emotional, and physical.
Rooted in creativity, innovation, and cultural perspective, Vuliwear speaks to a global-minded audience that values originality and elevated design. The brand’s signature message, “See Beyond,” reflects its essence: encouraging people to look beyond the expected, embrace personal style, and move through the world with clarity and intention.
Vuliwear is now featured on the Nordstrom Marketplace and is available on WeLoveUs.com, an online shopping experience produced by Essence Magazine. Vuliwear continues to expand its presence with momentum within the broader elevated fashion eyewear and lifestyle space.
“With each collection, Vuliwear continues to build a distinctive presence at the intersection of eyewear, fashion, and lifestyle—offering pieces that are not only worn, but experienced,” Dionne says.
For Vuliwear to become successful, Dionne has relied on partnerships with business strategists and others. “When you are working on things alone, it can be hard to focus and prioritize,” she says. She is working with the brand strategist, Dr. Hermead, who has helped Dionne establish one of her key five pillars for her business. It has helped Dionne to understand where Vuliwear is going from an operational standpoint. Having such assistance allows Dionne to place her attention on other pressing matters, and gives her flexibility to network. One organization she networks with is Strategic Links. The ogranization is made of other professionals and meets several times per month with the focus to learn and share ideas with one another. Dionne shares the freedom to be creative is what she loves most about what she does. “When you go to work for someone else, it’s usually their vision. For me, being an entrepreneur and creating Vuliwear, it allows me to do exactly what I want and what my vision is. That is freedom for me, to be able to create like that,” she says.

Running her company is not just about what Dionne can acquire, she also gives back. A portion of the company’s proceeds are donated to United To Beat Malaria, a United Nation foundation and initiative that sends bed nets and other lifesaving supplies to families in Africa and the Sub-Sahara who are threatened every evening by mosquitos carrying Malaria. “Knowing that by purchasing Vuliwear Eyewear, you are not only protecting your eyes, you are also saving a life. It not just a vanity grab, it’s not about us, about seeing the world,” Dionne says.
What is next for Dionne and Vuliwear? Vuli Life is Dionne’s primary focus, which will encompass other fashion accessories, art, and home. She is also working with others to produce a collection line of eyewear. Regardless of what Dionne is doing, it will be extravagant. “We are expanding upon what we have done already. I am excited to take the Vuliwear brand to the next level,” she says.

They are a great example of a thriving, power couple. Chicago, IL, residents Jessica and Drew Osi are the creators of Mahogany House Candles. Their company operates as a premium candle and lifestyle brand, and embodies both luxury and accessibility, embracing the idea that one can — and should — have both.
Based in Homewood, IL, the Black-owned company offers a collection of luxury, hand-poured candles, wax melts, votives, candle care accessories, and branded apparel. They share that each product is designed to transform everyday experiences into moments of sophistication, indulgence, and self-expression. Additionally, they host intimate candle-making workshops and corporate events, fostering creativity and community.
Jessica and Drew explain that the idea for Mahogany House began after Jess became a mother. “At home with my newborn, I began creating candles as a way to maintain a sense of calm and beauty amid the chaos of new parenthood. What started as a personal passion quickly grew, and in 2024, we launched Mahogany House online and opened our first brick-and-mortar boutique.”
Jessica (Jess) Osi is a Registered Nurse, entrepreneur, wife, and mother of two. She is also the founder and face of Mahogany House Candles. Raised in the South Suburbs of Chicago, Jess spent the last decade earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and building her nursing career in St. Louis, Indianapolis, and Seattle. After welcoming her first child, she sought a new pace of life, returning home to raise her family and pursue her passion for business. Today, Jess leads Mahogany House’s branding, social media, and Public Relation efforts.
Drew serves as the brand’s co-founder. He holds a Master’s Degree in organizational psychology and works as a Data Analyst and Consultant. Drew also serves as the data-driven strategist behind Mahogany House, guiding marketing and financial execution. While he typically operates behind the scenes, his expertise helps lay the foundation for their business.
When asked what they love most about their business, Jess shares her greatest joy comes from seeing others enjoy what she has created. “Whether it’s the launch of a new product or the shared experience of a candle-making class, those genuine reactions remind me why the journey is worth it,” she says. Jess and Drew both draw strength from their daughters, Navy and Love, who remain their greatest motivation. They also credit their community of family, friends, and fellow entrepreneurs for providing constant support.
While the road to entrepreneurship has been far from easy, Jess embraces it fully, recognizing the meaning and freedom it brings. She says, “As a Black woman entrepreneur, I must emphasize the importance of surrounding myself with peers who understand the unique challenges and triumphs of building a business in today’s climate.” She adds that a pivotal moment for her came during a goal-setting session with Drew. It was then that Jess realized she did not love her nursing career enough to continue advancing in it. “Becoming a mother further reinforced my desire to own my time and build something that aligned with my values,” she shared.
Like many small business owners, Jess and Drew have faced a few hurdles while building their brand. Some include limited funding, the need to drive consistent traffic, and the challenge of balancing family life. Yet, these obstacles have strengthened their marriage and partnership. “Our disagreements tend to center on business matters, leaving space for us to enjoy our personal relationship outside of work,” Jess says.

For other aspiring entrepreneurs who may find themselves on a path similar to Jess and Drew, the power couple offers some sound advice. “Be patient and persistent. Mahogany House was not built overnight; We spent two years refining our brand before launching, and success required laying a strong foundation rather than rushing into the market,” they said. Additionally, they don’t have many regrets for how things have happened in business, with only wishing they had started sooner. “Reflecting on the growth we have experienced in just the first year, I wonder where Mahogany House might be had we pursued entrepreneurship earlier. Respectfully, I acknowledge that every step of the journey has contributed to the brand’s success.”
With Mahogany House now in its second year, Jess and Drew are focused on scaling. Last year, they celebrated their first $10,000 month and have since expanded with wholesale partnerships, creating larger and more immersive candlemaking experiences. Looking ahead, the couple is excited to see just how far they can grow Mahogany House. To learn more about Mahogany House Candles, please visit their website.

Tiffany Price is a lifelong resident of Kansas City, MO, and a proud mother of four sons: Bryan, Phillip, Preston, and Karter, and a grandmother to Brayden, Bryan’s son. Community and service are at the core of who Tiffany is, and she has dedicated her career to supporting youth and families across Kansas City.
Tiffany is also the face and founder of Hold Em Up 4 Care, a nonprofit organization that provides essential clothing and hygiene resources to school-aged children and teens ages 9–19 in the Kansas City, Missouri, area. The organization offers free bras, underwear, socks, and belts, along with educational programs including hygiene curriculum, self-breast and testicular exams, bra measuring and fittings, etiquette classes, and a “boy prom closet.” Tiffany says, “Our wellness initiatives include yoga programs like Hip Hop Boys Yoga and summer/fall wellness programming. These services are designed to boost self-esteem, mental health resiliency, and confidence while ensuring youth have the basic necessities they need to thrive.”
Tiffany shares that she started Hold Em Up 4 Care as a community project through the Parent Leadership Training Institute of Kansas City (PLTI-KC). She adds, “The vision came from seeing firsthand how the lack of basic clothing items impacted children’s confidence and participation at school. I wanted to create an organization that provided immediate support while also empowering youth with knowledge and tools for long-term personal growth.”
When asked what she loves most about her program, Tiffany says it’s the opportunity to see the impact on the youth, watching them gain confidence, learn about their health, and feel proud of themselves. “Knowing our programs help young people feel seen, valued, and capable is the most rewarding part of my work.” Even more, Tiffany says the partnerships with local schools, volunteers, community leaders, and donors have been impactful and transformative. “The students themselves inspire the work every day; they remind us why equitable access to essentials matters.”
Managing a nonprofit organization often comes with unique challenges, and Tiffany has managed them with persistence and tactfulness. Some ongoing challenges have been limited funding, growing demand, operating without a physical office, and raising awareness of clothing insecurity in our community. Through strategic fundraising, strong partnerships, volunteer support, and efficient program design, Tiffany and her team have been able to stretch resources and maximize the organization’s impact. “Our storage-based operations allow us to serve more youth while keeping costs manageable,” she says.
Even with the challenges and obstacles that Hold Em Up 4 Care has encountered, Tiffany has enjoyed the experiences it has offered. When asked if there is anything different that she would have done, she says, “I would have loved to pursue our own or a shared space and expand with more partners. Every step has been a learning experience, but having a physical space and additional collaborations would have accelerated our growth and community impact.”
For others who may be interested in starting a program similar to what Tiffany has done, she offers a bit of advice that may be helpful. She adds, “Start with a clear vision, listen to your community, and build strong partnerships. Be persistent, focus on sustainable growth, and remember that even small actions can create lasting change. Passion alone isn’t enough; action and consistency make the difference.”
The future looks very bright for Tiffany and Hold Em Up 4 Care, and she has set her sights on doing even more in her community to serve and meet the needs of others. One she says is expanding Hold Em Up 4 Care’s programs, strengthening school partnerships in Kansas City, and integrating wellness and educational initiatives directly into student curricula. As a state representative, Tiffany also aims to advocate for policies that improve access to resources and opportunities for families across Missouri, creating both immediate support and longterm systemic change.
