Expect Great Things From MPS As It Works On Literacy, Schools, Operations Information obtained from online at www.milwaukeepublicschools.org

With the new school year near, MPS Superintendent Brenda Cassellius, EdD, said families as well as the city should expect great things from Milwaukee Public Schools in 2026-27, as the district works to improve literacy, update school buildings, and operate more effectively. “That means investing in great teaching, great opportunities, great schools, and the people who make those things possible every day. Our students deserve nothing less,” she said. Dr. Cassellius spoke at the refreshed Frances Brock Starms Discovery Learning Center on Thursday, August 27, alongside Milwaukee Board of School Directors President Missy Zombor and Mayor Cavalier Johnson. Starms Discovery is one of six schools the district is investing in to make them welcoming, safe, and inspiring for students. At Starms, that means improvements such as new flooring, fresh paint in appealing colors, a safe playground surface, and a new gymnasium that includes new flooring, paint, lighting, and sound panels in vivid blues and greens. “The students will be so surprised” when they come to school on the first day, Dr. Love added. “The school looks nothing like it did before. … To me, it sends a powerful message. It sends a message that they matter. It’s going to be an enhancement in the day-to-day experience for the students and the families — and also the staff.”

Signs of Progress in Reading Dr. Cassellius noted that the district is seeing early signs of progress under its new literacy plan. Curriculum based on the science of reading was introduced in elementary schools in January; the high schools will receive their new reading curriculum this fall. The superintendent reported progress in filling teaching positions, as well. Last year at this time, about 120 teaching positions were vacant; this year, about 60 are vacant, even while the district has added teaching positions to help manage and reduce class sizes. “We are entering this school year in a much stronger position than we were a year ago,” Dr. Cassellius said. The superintendent indicated that the partnership between schools and families is key to student success. “We want families to know that their voices matter, their expectations matter, and their partnership matters. If we want great things for our students, we need families and schools working together.” She also urged students to “come to school ready to learn. Ask questions. Try things that may be difficult. Find something you’re passionate about. And know that the adults at MPS are here to support you.”

The principal noted that the design — like the design at other investment schools — was based on input from students, families, staff, and others in the Starms community.

Dr. Cassellius also called on businesses, nonprofits, elected officials and other civic leaders, and residents to be partners in the work of Milwaukee Public Schools. “We have seen an outpouring of support for our schools, and we are incredibly grateful. And we still need you,” she said.

“I hope, when they enter, they feel a real sense of ownership,” Dr. Love said of the students. “They’ll feel like this is their space. It really is a reflection of the tremendous potential we see in them every day.”

Gathering Community Input Milwaukee Board of School Directors President Missy Zombor said district employees are ready to welcome back students on the first day of school, Tuesday, September 1.

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson remarked at Starms Discovery, “With these really important improvements and upgrades, students and parents, staff, the neighbors who live nearby, they can all feel proud and look forward to a bright new year that’s ahead.”

“Our teachers, principals, school staff, district team, and union partners have been working day and night to make sure our schools are ready to welcome back students,” President Zombor said. “MPS has the people and the passion to give all of our students a safe, enriching, and joyful school experience.”

The other schools in which MPS invested over the summer are Brown Street Academy, Andrew S. Douglas School, Gwen T. Jackson Early Childhood and Elementary School, North Division High School, and River Trail School of Agricultural Science. The schools primarily are in historically underinvested neighborhoods.Funding for the improvements are from the district’s Fund 46, a long-term capital-improvement trust fund.

Looking ahead into the new school year, the superintendent said MPS will establish advisory committees to gather community input on its priorities for its budget and buildings — including building closures and new construction — which will h drive the district’s direction for the next several years.

In 1990, this great man of God was installed as Pastor of Greater New Birth Church where he continues to serve as Senior Pastor. Under his leadership, Greater New Birth Church provides training to youth and adults in various areas of leadership and outreach ministries that address many social skills in the community, a 6 -module ministers-in- training curriculum, and a staff of more than 120 ministers. Greater New Birth Church is currently in the fourth and final phase of a multi-million dollar project. This project includes new sanctuary, a family life center equipped with classrooms and recreational space, economic development opportunities and outreach efforts. God’s divine will and Bishop Burt’s leadership have made it possible for Greater New Birth Church to bring God’s vision to reality with no outstanding debt attached to the project. Bishop Burt not only serves as pastor to Greater New Birth Church, but travels worldwide preaching and teaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ in an effort to serve the Body of Christ. Her spiritual gifts include warring in prayer, anointed singing and administration. Her hobbies are working on the computer and sewing. Pastor Patricia acknowledged her call into ministry over 15 years ago. On September 25, 2005, First Lady Burt became Pastor Patricia Burt. It is with great excitement that those who love her were able to witness her move into greater manifestation of the power of God that rests in her life. Pastor Patricia works diligently in ministry at Greater New Birth Church as First Lady, and her presence brings with it an air of excellence, virtuous womanhood and Godliness. Mi’Amor L. Johnson of Milwaukee, WI, possesses a genuine love for people, especially her family, and words. While managing the day-to-day rigors of being a teenager, which involves school, sports, listening to music, hanging out with friends, and more, Mi’Amor also loves to write. Writing is a gift that Mi’Amor realized early in her young life. She says, “I began officially writing when I was 10 years old, but I unofficially began writing even younger than that.” Mi’Amor shares that her vision came from looking through her notebook and writing down random thoughts about her name, prayers, etc. Amazingly, at age 10, she wrote her first book, and that was when it all became serious for her. “The vision honestly came from my mom and dad. I saw writing as something that I randomly did, but they saw it as greatness, and as a gift.” Mi’Amor has published several books that are intended for young readers between the ages of 3 and 10. Her works are part of a series about a young character named Samantha. Samantha, Mi’Amor says, is a fictional character who gives children a lot to look forward to and teaches lessons about life, morals, and history. One of the books, 10 Days With Samantha, takes readers through a 10-day journey in the day-to-day life of a little girl named Samantha. In 10 Days with Samantha, Mi’Amor creates this young girl who is simply excited about life. She shares the love and joy Samantha has for her family members and friends. Readers learn what makes Samantha happy and what makes her afraid, and also learn that it’s because of her own moral convictions and daily reflections that Samantha is able to overcome her fears and struggles. Readers truly get a chance to practice connection with the thoughts and feelings of another child, and Mi’Amor says this happens not only for the sake of knowledge, but to demonstrate true care and concern with joy and gratitude. Mi’Amor closes each day of the book with a simple prayer for Samantha, and she says that Samantha is a character that readers will learn to love and enjoy because of the good characterization skills utilized in the story she has written. Another book she has written is Samantha Goes to Atlanta. Mi’Amor instructs her readers to pack their bags and join Samantha on her most meaningful adventure yet! Following the heartwarming journey in 10 Days with Samantha, the young and curious explorer is heading to the vibrant city of Atlanta, located in the state of Georgia. In this exciting sequel, Samantha discovers that a vacation can be full of both fun and deep inspiration. From the bustling city streets to iconic landmarks, Samantha’s trip is a beautiful blend of exploration and education. She walks in the footsteps of a hero while exploring the birthplace of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. There, she learns about the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and feels the powerful call to courage at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights. Samantha Goes to Atlanta is a story of discovery that encourages young readers to embrace history, celebrate progress, and see how they, too, can be “Agents of Change” in their own communities.

Mi’Amor says that what she loves most about writing and her published works is how they bring her closer to helping others. Writing also provides her with an opportunity to make her voice heard. “While there is usually “Samantha” in my stories, she often represents me in disguise,” she says. Mi’Amor shares that her parents inspire her more than anyone else. Both are published authors, and Mi’Amor has witnessed them writing her entire life. She says that her parents are also the most intelligent people she knows, and they inspire and motivate her to strive for greatness. Mi’Amor shares that her surrounding environment, particularly the people at her school, serves as an additional source of inspiration. “There is one girl in my class who is also an author, and she is wonderful. She accomplished something I didn’t have faith in myself to do. Her enthusiasm motivated and showed me that I can do the same if I only believed in myself more,” she says.

As a young aspiring author, Mi’Amor shares that there is so much she doesn’t talk about that runs constantly through her mind. This includes things such as questioning herself. “Am I good enough?” “Will I be unheard or misunderstood?” “Will I be taken seriously?” She has also encountered writer’s block and asked: “Is this writing thing for me for real?” Mi’Amor shares she has countered those thoughts by praying continuously and speaking positive affirmations into existence. “After I pray, I focus on what I’m asking for and speak as if it has already come to pass,” she says. For the amazingly talented young author, the future looks pretty bright. She has entered her senior year in high school and is currently seeking scholarships to attend Howard University in Washington, D.C., or Hampton University in Hampton, VA. Mi’Amor shares that her next step is not just to be recognized for her character Samantha’s writing, but also to gain attention for her poetry. “I want my writing to change someone’s life for the better; I want it to be transformative. In the future, I envision my books lining the shelves of stores, and I see myself receiving awards for my published books, acknowledging not only the books themselves, but also the blood, sweat, and tears I have poured into writing them.” h

The Joe Greene Foundation By Terry L. Watson - Photos Provided by Joe Greene There is a saying in life that when life gives you lemons, you should make lemonade. For Asheville, NC, native and resident Joe Greene, this adage is very fitting. Five years ago, Joe was diagnosed with Colon Cancer, stage three to be exact. For some, a diagnosis such as this can be detrimental and life-altering. At the young age of 40, the diagnosis brought everything into perspective for Joe. Instead of being quiet, Joe chose to use his condition to talk about it and educate others, specifically black men, about the importance of getting a colonoscopy and being screened early. “Getting screened and knowing your status is very important. I feel like cancer was given to me for a reason, a purpose. It was given to me to speak up and show others that you can still live your life while going through such a tough battle. I want to educate others about the warning signs and symptoms of Colon Cancer, and encourage them to get screened as well,” he says. Often acknowledged as The BLACK Spokesman for Colonoscopy Test at age 40, and The Colorectal Cancer Ambassador of COGI Organization, Joe shares that he enjoys each day that he has, and realizes that life could be worse. “The stigma associated with cancer often brings fear. However, being diagnosed with cancer is probably one of the better things that have happened to me in my life. It woke me up, it educated me, and it brought my family together. Cancer has opened the eyes of a lot of people around me. Due to my diagnosis, there have been nearly 500 people who have had a colonoscopy because of my story,” he says. In response to receiving his diagnosis, Joe launched the Joe Greene Foundation. The Joe Greene Foundation is deeply committed to advancing equity, particularly in healthcare access and outcomes for underserved Black communities. Joe shares that the foundation’s approach to equity is multifaceted, involving targeted outreach, culturally competent programming, advocacy, and continuous community engagement. The Joe Greene Foundation recognizes that equity goes beyond equal treatment—it involves understanding and addressing the specific barriers and needs of those who have been historically marginalized. “Colon Cancer Awareness is a community-led effort to reduce late-stage colorectal cancer in Western North Carolina by increasing culturally relevant education, early screening, and peer navigation for Black men and their families,” he says. The Joe Greene Foundation uses real-time storytelling, trusted community spaces, and one-on-one support to break stigma, address medical mistrust, and connect individuals to care. Through partnerships with churches, schools, health providers, and local organizations, they are able to move people from awareness to completed screenings while also supporting mental health, survivorship, and family health history conversations that build long-term prevention and resilience.

The Joe Greene Foundation significantly expanded its education and awareness efforts in ways that strengthen both community health and long-term regional resilience. Presently, Joe is undergoing treatment for his condition, which has advanced to Stage Four. He has shared real-time experiences of living with Stage 4 colon cancer through digital media, reaching thousands and helping normalize conversations about screening, treatment, ostomy care, and survivorship. He adds that these authentic narratives deeply resonate with Black men and families who are often underrepresented in cancer education, reducing stigma and supporting earlier detection and better health outcomes that directly affect workforce stability and economic security. Outreach for the foundation has also grown through radio talk shows, Cancer Comedy Awareness events, and educational sessions in churches and community centers. He says that increasing both the number and diversity of venues, including Early Screening Saves Lives spaces and men’s health gatherings, has strengthened trusted community networks, expanded access to life-saving information across generations, and built local capacity for prevention, advocacy, and shared care. In addition to launching his foundation, Joe has also written two books to help others who may be facing a similar ordeal understand some of the things that are involved. His first book, The Next Chapter, Early Screening Saves Lives, focuses on sharing the truths that are involved with Cancer. “I wrote The Next Chapter to explain the taste that you get in your mouth from the medicine, and the neuropathy that you get in your feet and hands after a treatment. I want others to know that the medicine put in your body to fight cancer cells also hits other places. In my book, I interviewed all my doctors and allowed them to explain what everything meant and how it affects my body,” Joe shares. His second book, The Next Chapter: What About The Mental, focuses on the importance of seeking therapy while battling cancer. “I was encouraged by another black man to try therapy, and I am so glad that I did. It changed my life and gave me some answers that I needed. During my sessions, I asked my therapist to help me write a book that would help others. Therapy is a great thing, and I recommend it to other black men.”

Understandably, with managing his foundation, Joe has encountered a few challenges. He shares that he has found that people say they want to learn about health matters that affect Black people, but when it comes to funding the cause, it is not always there. “Sometimes I wonder if people are really listening. I think that we are not talking about colorectal cancer enough in the black community, and the issue is often swept under the rug. We need to have more involvement and support to spread awareness, which will create opportunities for more early screenings,” he says. Joe attended North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro. He is a father of three and an active member of his community. Joe has spent decades as an event organizer and promoter, as well as passionately serving his community in Asheville, often as a youth mentor with the non-profit organization led by Keynon Lake. Looking ahead, Joe plans to do all that he can to raise awareness about early screening. He adds that his mission is to encourage others to get colonoscopies at the age of 40. “Insurance used to cover colonoscopies at 50, and now it’s age 45. I want to lower that number to age 40, because I was diagnosed at 40, and if I waited till age 45, I don’t know if I would be here today,” he says. During the week of January 28th through the 31st, 2027, Joe is producing a stage play titled The Battle In Life. It will take place in Asheville, NC, at the Diana Wortham Theater. Dr. Tamika L. Johnson of Milwaukee, WI, is a good example of what a serial entrepreneur looks like. She is the owner of Grow Up Empowerment Life Coaching LLC. Located in Germantown, WI, her company offers various services, including individual life coaching, couples coaching, and group workshops. Dr. Johnson also provides academic tutoring and empowerment speaking engagements. Her coaching services focus on purpose, self-love, leadership, growth mindset, and personal growth to help clients achieve their goals and overcome internal roadblocks. Dr, Johnson is also the founder of a non-profit organization named Women Leaving the Clubs and Returning Home. She owns a clothing Brand named Stand Out Apparel and a publishing company: Najm Publishing. I encourage my clients to reach their fullest potential by helping them realize that their desires are already within them; they just need to believe and explore their possibilities. My sessions begin with a focus on self-acceptance, as I believe that one cannot truly impact and love others without having self-love that radiates unconditional love. Another component of my life coaching business is my focus on mental health management. I coach on the importance of taking care of your mind by thinking positively and having a growth mindset. I also coach on the importance of sustaining and maintaining one’s mental health through self-care and/ or professional treatment.” In addition to being a successful business owner, Dr. Johnson is a wife, mother of two children, and grandmother, having one granddaughter. Dr. Johnson’s work and advocacy hasn’t happened without recognition. Her accolades include receiving a Community Leader/Life Coach Award in 2023 from “It Takes A Village”. She was awarded The Truth Radio 101.7’s Community- Education Award in 2024. Also in 2024, she received the Wisconsin GHP Mental Health Advocacy Award, along with a LiveWire Excellence Life Coach Award. Dr. Johnson has been featured in several publications and published books. Dr. Johnson says that what she loves most about work is her ability to help her clients gain clarity, accountability, and confidence. She adds, “I love that I am able to allow my clients to experience and appreciate the unbiased, non-judgmental space to explore ideas, set realistic goals, and stay motivated to overcome obstacles. For Dr. Johnson, a significant challenge she has faced has been maintaining a steady client base, marketing, and establishing a wide range of credibility. “I’ve dealt with the challenge of keeping my company open as well as income instability. I’ve learned to weather the storm by remaining consistent and optimistic. I’ve developed the mindset of the importance of remaining resilient and the art of being able to rebrand myself and keep myself in front of my audience or the group who needs my services. Even more, I’ve been challenged with balancing my personal and professional life. I have countered this by setting boundaries for myself to ensure that my mental health is fine and my personal life is well balanced,” she says. For others who may follow a path similar to that of Dr. Johnson, she offers some sound advice. “Remain consistent and set boundaries for yourself. I would also encourage you to consistently assess your client’s progress as well as the progress of your business aspect of coaching. Make sure you continue with self-improvement and personal growth. Also, weather the storm and learn to rebrand yourself when necessary,” she says. Moving forward, Dr. Johnson plans to continue to scale her life coaching business, diversify her service offerings by creating passive income streams like online courses or digital products alongside her signature book and journal entitled “Grow Up On Purpose”. She adds, “I plan on using more software and potentially hiring a virtual assistant to handle administrative tasks to free up my time. I also plan to optimize my marketing and sales by raising my prices strategically, targeting specific client needs with focused content, and exploring affiliate marketing or paid ads,” she says. h

Elisha Ferrell, of Newark, NJ, is a woman of faith, a hospitality professional, and an entrepreneur. She also possesses a genuine heart for service. Elisha is the Founder and Hospitality & Experience Strategist of Elevated Experience Consulting LLC, a hospitality-informed consulting and advisory firm focused on helping organizations strengthen how they operate, engage, and create experiences for the people they serve. Elisha says that Elevated Experience Consulting provides hospitality-informed consulting and advisory support to leaders and organizations that want to strengthen how they operate and how people experience their brand, organization, or event. “Our work currently centers around Experience Readiness and Integrity Reviews, High Visibility Protocols and Etiquette Support, and Post-Experience Debrief and Corrective Actions. Born and raised in New York, Elisha has deep family roots in Walterboro and Charleston, South Carolina. “I would consider myself a Northern girl with a Southern twist,” she says. Growing up with both influences shaped how Elisha connects with and cares for people. She adds that she was taught to be nice, something that became deeply embedded in who she is. “I learned early that kindness, generosity, and making people feel welcome cost nothing, and I still believe it takes far more energy to be rude or unkind than it does to simply treat people well.” Faith has been foundational in Elisha’s life from the very beginning. Her mother raised her in the church and taught her that having a relationship with God is essential, continuing the foundation her grandmother had first established in her and her siblings. Elisha says that her mother was the first person to recognize and cultivate her gifts, giving her opportunities to serve, volunteer, organize, lead, and use her hospitality and administrative abilities. Service became second nature to Elisha. Whether she was serving on the usher board, singing in the choir, fundraising, volunteering at school, helping at church, or stepping in wherever she was needed, Elisha learned early the importance and significance of service. The foundation Elisha experienced followed her into her professional career, beginning with Hyatt Hotels Corporation. There, she grew from a front desk agent into supervisory and management roles, and later expanded across human resources, communications, government, administration, global stakeholder engagement, and operational support. Each experience, Elisha says, strengthened her understanding of people, service, leadership, and the work that happens behind the scenes to create an excellent experience. She would eventually earn her Bachelor of Arts from St. Francis College and later a Master of Business Administration from Keller Graduate School of Management. Elevated Experience Consulting LLC was launched in April 2026. Elisha says that hospitality taught her early that an exceptional experience is rarely accidental. Structure is involved, as well as anticipating people’s needs, solving problems, communicating clearly, and paying attention to details that others may overlook or never know existed. As her career expanded beyond hotels, she began recognizing those same principles everywhere. Whether she was supporting executives, coordinating international stakeholder engagements, working with community organizations, or helping execute events, Elisha found herself asking: What does this experience feel like for the team helping to create it? What does it feel like for the people receiving it? What needs to happen behind the scenes to make the experience better for everyone involved? The answer: EEC was created to bring hospitality thinking into spaces that may not traditionally consider themselves hospitality businesses. Organizations still have guests, clients, employees, stakeholders, members, partners, and communities who experience them. Elisha desires to make those experiences intentional. When asked what she loves most about EEC, Elisha says it’s the reaction and lasting impact she has on others. “There is something incredibly fulfilling about watching someone experience the result of work that happened behind the scenes. They may never know every problem that was solved, every detail that was considered, or every adjustment that had to be made, but they know how the experience made them feel,” she said. “I also love being able to reduce the weight carried by the person leading an experience. When I can anticipate a need, solve a problem, bring structure to something that feels overwhelming, or simply allow a leader to focus on their people and their purpose because they know I am paying attention to the details, that is meaningful to me.” Elisha shares that her greatest inspiration comes from her faith, and she believes that the gifts, experiences, relationships, and opportunities she has been given carry responsibility. “I want my legacy to reflect that. I want every person I encounter to be better for having crossed paths with me, whether through service, encouragement, opportunity, or simply how I treated them,” she says. Elisha credits her mother, Dr. Jacqueline Ferrell, and her uncle, Dr. Edison Bond Jr for also playing a huge role in her development. “My mother was the first person to cultivate my gifts and teach me that serving others is not simply something you do, but a way of life. Whether in ministry, her career, or within our family and community, she has consistently led through compassion, generosity, and service. Watching her pour into people taught me that true leadership begins with a servant’s heart.” As a healthcare executive, minister, and lifelong learner, Elisha’s uncle has shown her what it looks like to pursue excellence while remaining grounded in integrity, accountability, compassion, and service. Like most business owners, Elisha has faced various challenges while building her business. One she identifies has been building a business while learning to be patient with the process. She is also learning that building a business does not mean everything has to happen at once. She adds that there will always be another resource, investment, or opportunity that could help EEC grow, but part of building responsibly is knowing what makes sense for the business now and what can come as the business grows and more resources become available. “I manage challenges that occur in my business through faith, continued learning, relationship building, being willing to ask questions, and most importantly, continuing to move. I am learning that progress does not always announce itself as success. Sometimes progress is the relationship you built, the pitch you sent, the opportunity you pursued, or simply choosing to keep building when the results have not arrived yet.” Moving forward, Elisha has her sights set on growing EEC. This also involves visibility, strategic partnerships, and paid opportunities that allow her work to speak for itself. “I want to continue building relationships with leaders, organizations, hospitality brands, corporations, faith-based and community organizations, and teams responsible for creating high visibility experiences,” she says. “Long-term, I see EEC expanding its reach across industries, developing strategic partnerships, creating educational resources and training opportunities, and building a reputation for excellence in hospitality-informed operational and experience strategy. I want EEC to be known as a trusted resource that organizations turn to because they understand that great experiences begin long before the physical or virtual doors open and before a program ever begins. I am still at the beginning, and I think that is part of what makes this season terrifying yet exciting. China says that one of the biggest challenges has been balancing entrepreneurship with everyday life. “Building a business requires long hours, constant learning, and the ability to adapt quickly. Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve faced financial challenges, moments of uncertainty, and the pressure of wearing multiple hats. Christina “Chrissy” Holloway of Cleveland, OH, prides herself on being an example of what strength, faith, and perseverance can produce.
