Harvey Rice Educator Earns Prestigious Ohio Teacher of the Year Recognition Information obtained from online Press Release

As an intervention specialist, Bowman supports students both in the classroom and through individualized services, helping them access the support they need while remaining connected to their peers. “My students see they’re not the only ones who need help,” Bowman said. “It keeps them connected to their peers while making sure they get the services they need.” Beyond her classroom responsibilities, Bowman serves as a champion for students with disabilities and their families. She works closely with teachers, parents, and school support teams to identify student needs and connect scholars with appropriate services and interventions. Her commitment to advocacy also extends beyond the school building. Through her involvement with the National Alliance of Black School Educators, Bowman regularly promotes awareness and support for special education. The Ohio State Board of Education named Angela Bowman, an intervention specialist at Harvey Rice Wraparound School, to its 2027 State Board District Teachers of the Year cohort, recognizing her excellence in the classroom and leadership as an advocate for special education. Selected through Ohio’s Teacher of the Year Program, Bowman is now part of a cohort of educators advancing through the state’s recognition process. The program, established in 1964, celebrates outstanding teachers and provides opportunities for professional learning, leadership, and advocacy throughout Ohio. “Just being nominated alongside general education teachers was important,” Bowman said. “It gives me a chance to talk about special education, the work we do, and the students we serve.” A 15-year veteran of Cleveland Metropolitan School District, including the past 12 years at Harvey Rice, Bowman believes strong relationships are at the heart of student success. “Everything begins with relationships,” she said. “Parents need to know that I’m an advocate for their child. Students need to know I’m there for them. Once that trust is there, we can do the work.”

“I’m always asking, ‘What about special education?’” She said. “This recognition gives me a larger platform to advocate for students and hopefully inspire future teachers to consider this field.” The honor comes after a rigorous application process that includes essays and video submissions. Bowman said she was surprised by the nomination and never expected to advance this far. Her husband passed away shortly after she was nominated. She considered stepping away from the process but chose to continue, inspired by his encouragement and the excitement about the opportunity. “I honestly didn’t think I would make it this far,” she said. The next phase of the selection process will determine four state finalists, with one educator ultimately being named Ohio Teacher of the Year. Regardless of the outcome, Bowman hopes her recognition helps elevate the profession and shine a light on the impact intervention specialists make every day. “This gives me an opportunity to show what special education teachers do and why it matters,” she said.

City of Cleveland Launches New Emergency Alert System, Rave Information obtained from online Press Release

The City of Cleveland has launched Rave, the City’s official emergency notification system designed to keep residents, businesses, visitors, and neighboring areas informed during emergencies, major events, and other important community updates. Community members are encouraged to register today to stay informed during emergencies, major events, and important community updates. “Whether dealing with emergency situations or major events, timely and reliable communication is critical for residents, visitors, and our first responders,” says Wayne Drummond, Director of Public Safety for the City of Cleveland. “This essential tool will strengthen our emergency response, keeping our communities safe, informed, and connected.” Rave delivers timely notifications directly to subscribers by text message, email, and/or voice call, helping community members stay informed and prepared when critical information matters most. Residents can customize their alert preferences by selecting the types of notifications they want to receive, the geographic areas they want to monitor, and their preferred method of communication. Whether at home, work, or on the go, Rave provides important information to help individuals make informed decisions during emergencies and other significant events. “For older adults, receiving accurate information quickly can make all the difference during an emergency,” said Mary McNamara, Director of the City of Cleveland Department of Aging. “We encourage Cleveland seniors, their families, caregivers, and neighbors to sign up for Rave so they receive timely alerts that help them stay safe, prepared, and connected to their community.” Registration is free and only takes a few minutes. Current subscribers are also encouraged to review and update their h contact information and notification preferences to ensure they continue receiving the alerts.

China says that family has always been important to her; she shares that it taught her the value of love, resilience, and being available and present for the people around her. China is a student of life, and says that her education has come from both the classroom and life itself. “While formal education gave me a foundation, entrepreneurship became my greatest teacher. Every success, setback, mistake, and victory has shaped the woman I am today. I believe life is always teaching us if we’re willing to learn. At my core, I’m simply someone who loves helping people. Knowing that what she does has the ability to brighten someone’s day is what China says she loves most about her company. Whether someone is enjoying one of her meals, hearing her speak, reading her book, or simply receiving encouragement during a difficult season, knowing that she made a positive impact is the greatest reward. She adds, “Success isn’t just measured by sales or recognition for me. It’s measured by lives touched, relationships built, and the smiles created along the way.” Running her company has come with many challenges for the ambitious and successful entrepreneur. China says that one of the biggest challenges has been balancing entrepreneurship with everyday life. “Building a business requires long hours, constant learning, and the ability to adapt quickly. Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve faced financial challenges, moments of uncertainty, and the pressure of wearing multiple hats. There have also been times when I had to remind myself that growth takes patience and that every season serves a purpose.” Faith has been China’s foundation, and it’s also what she has relied on to face her difficulties. She says, “I’ve learned that every obstacle carries a lesson. Instead of allowing challenges to discourage me, I’ve used them to become stronger, wiser, and more intentional. I’ve also learned the importance of taking care of myself. Recently, my health reminded me that rest is just as important as hard work. Today, I’m focused on building a business that is successful and sustainable while maintaining balance in my personal life.” China also states that God has had the greatest impact on her life. “There have been many moments when I didn’t know what the next step would be, but my faith has always reminded me to keep moving forward. Every opportunity, every lesson, and every blessing has strengthened my belief that purpose is bigger than fear. I have been able to find inspiration in those that I serve. Meeting individuals from different walks of life reminds me daily why I started this journey. Even more, their stories continue to motivate me to keep showing up and giving my best,” China says.

For those who may follow a similar path in business as China, she offers some clear and sound advice. She says, “Don’t wait until everything is perfect to begin. Start where you are, use what you have, and trust the process. There will be mistakes, setbacks, and moments when you question yourself, but don’t let those moments stop you. Also, stay teachable, remain consistent, surround yourself with people who genuinely support your growth, and never lose sight of why you started. Most importantly, don’t compare your journey to someone else’s. Your path is unique, and your purpose is too.” China shares that her future is incredibly exciting, so much so that she is planning to continue expanding Unique Meals & More LLC through larger catering opportunities, corporate partnerships, community initiatives, and the growth of our mobile food experiences. She is also looking forward to expanding her motivational speaking platform, reaching more audiences through her book, and creating programs that help aspiring entrepreneurs build successful businesses with confidence. “More than anything, I want my legacy to be one of service. I hope people remember me as someone who used every opportunity to inspire others, strengthen communities, and remind people that with faith, consistency, and purpose, anything is possible.” h

For Asheville, NC, native and resident Joe Greene, this adage is very fitting. Five years ago, Joe was diagnosed with Colon Cancer, stage three to be exact. For some, a diagnosis such as this can be detrimental and life-altering. At the young age of 40, the diagnosis brought everything into perspective for Joe. Instead of being quiet, Joe chose to use his condition to talk about it and educate others, specifically black men, about the importance of getting a colonoscopy and being screened early. “Getting screened and knowing your status is very important. I feel like cancer was given to me for a reason, a purpose. It was given to me to speak up and show others that you can still live your life while going through such a tough battle. I want to educate others about the warning signs and symptoms of Colon Cancer, and encourage them to get screened as well,” he says. Often acknowledged as The BLACK Spokesman for Colonoscopy Test at age 40, and The Colorectal Cancer Ambassador of COGI Organization, Joe shares that he enjoys each day that he has, and realizes that life could be worse. “The stigma associated with cancer often brings fear. However, being diagnosed with cancer is probably one of the better things that have happened to me in my life. It woke me up, it educated me, and it brought my family together. Cancer has opened the eyes of a lot of people around me. Due to my diagnosis, there have been nearly 500 people who have had a colonoscopy because of my story,” he says. In response to receiving his diagnosis, Joe launched the Joe Greene Foundation. The Joe Greene Foundation is deeply committed to advancing equity, particularly in healthcare access and outcomes for underserved Black communities. Joe shares that the foundation’s approach to equity is multifaceted, involving targeted outreach, culturally competent programming, advocacy, and continuous community engagement. The Joe Greene Foundation recognizes that equity goes beyond equal treatment—it involves understanding and addressing the specific barriers and needs of those who have been historically marginalized. “Colon Cancer Awareness is a community-led effort to reduce late-stage colorectal cancer in Western North Carolina by increasing culturally relevant education, early screening, and peer navigation for Black men and their families,” he says. The Joe Greene Foundation uses real-time storytelling, trusted community spaces, and one-on-one support to break stigma, address medical mistrust, and connect individuals to care. Through partnerships with churches, schools, health providers, and local organizations, they are able to move people from awareness to completed screenings while also supporting mental health, survivorship, and family health history conversations that build long-term prevention and resilience.

The Joe Greene Foundation significantly expanded its education and awareness efforts in ways that strengthen both community health and long-term regional resilience. Presently, Joe is undergoing treatment for his condition, which has advanced to Stage Four. He has shared real-time experiences of living with Stage 4 colon cancer through digital media, reaching thousands and helping normalize conversations about screening, treatment, ostomy care, and survivorship. He adds that these authentic narratives deeply resonate with Black men and families who are often underrepresented in cancer education, reducing stigma and supporting earlier detection and better health outcomes that directly affect workforce stability and economic security. Outreach for the foundation has also grown through radio talk shows, Cancer Comedy Awareness events, and educational sessions in churches and community centers. He says that increasing both the number and diversity of venues, including Early Screening Saves Lives spaces and men’s health gatherings, has strengthened trusted community networks, expanded access to life-saving information across generations, and built local capacity for prevention, advocacy, and shared care. In addition to launching his foundation, Joe has also written two books to help others who may be facing a similar ordeal understand some of the things that are involved. His first book, The Next Chapter, Early Screening Saves Lives, focuses on sharing the truths that are involved with Cancer. “I wrote The Next Chapter to explain the taste that you get in your mouth from the medicine, and the neuropathy that you get in your feet and hands after a treatment. I want others to know that the medicine put in your body to fight cancer cells also hits other places. In my book, I interviewed all my doctors and allowed them to explain what everything meant and how it affects my body,” Joe shares. His second book, The Next Chapter: What About The Mental, focuses on the importance of seeking therapy while battling cancer. “I was encouraged by another black man to try therapy, and I am so glad that I did. It changed my life and gave me some answers that I needed. During my sessions, I asked my therapist to help me write a book that would help others. Therapy is a great thing, and I recommend it to other black men.”

Understandably, with managing his foundation, Joe has encountered a few challenges. He shares that he has found that people say they want to learn about health matters that affect Black people, but when it comes to funding the cause, it is not always there. “Sometimes I wonder if people are really listening. I think that we are not talking about colorectal cancer enough in the black community, and the issue is often swept under the rug. We need to have more involvement and support to spread awareness, which will create opportunities for more early screenings,” he says. Joe attended North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro. He is a father of three and an active member of his community. Joe has spent decades as an event organizer and promoter, as well as passionately serving his community in Asheville, often as a youth mentor with the non-profit organization led by Keynon Lake. Looking ahead, Joe plans to do all that he can to raise awareness about early screening. He adds that his mission is to encourage others to get colonoscopies at the age of 40. “Insurance used to cover colonoscopies at 50, and now it’s age 45. I want to lower that number to age 40, because I was diagnosed at 40, and if I waited till age 45, I don’t know if I would be here today,” he says. During the week of January 28th through the 31st, 2027, Joe is producing a stage play titled The Battle In Life. It will take place in Asheville, NC, at the Diana Wortham Theater. Nikki K. Lopez, MBA, is a wife, mother, entrepreneur, certified dementia practitioner, published author, advocate, facilitator, and someone whose life was forever changed by becoming a family caregiver. She is also the founder of Caregiver OneCall and CEO of Caring Haven. Caregiver OneCall is a national nonprofit created from the realization that family caregivers are too often left to navigate one of life’s hardest responsibilities alone. Through free education, respite, support groups, trusted guidance, and community partnerships, the organization helps caregivers make informed decisions before exhaustion, burnout, or crisis takes over. Caring Haven is a non-medical home care agency dedicated to helping older adults and individuals with disabilities live safely and independently at home. Their services include companionship, personal care, respite, transportation, and specialized support for those living with Alzheimer’s, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, chronic illness, or recovering from surgery. Every care plan is built around the unique needs of the individual and the family supporting them. Collectively, the two organizations support both the caregiver and the person receiving care, as Nikki says that one cannot thrive without the other. “Our work is centered on one belief: Caregiving shouldn’t begin with a crisis, and support shouldn’t either.” Presently residing in Antioch, CA, Nikki was born and raised in the beautiful country of Jamaica. She shares that growing up in Jamaica taught her the value of community. “You looked out for your neighbors, showed up for family, and believed that helping one another wasn’t extraordinary; it was simply what you did. That belief has shaped both my life and the organizations I’ve built.” Professionally, Nikki has worked in banking, corporate leadership, healthcare, and nonprofit organizations. Those experiences taught Nikki how systems work. The vision for Caregiver OneCall and CEO of Caring Haven, Nikki, shares, started with her grandmother. “As I cared for her, I realized how little support exists for the person doing the caregiving. Everyone focuses on the patient, but very few people ask how the caregiver is doing. I remember searching for answers, trying to understand what to do next, and feeling like I was navigating everything alone. Every phone call led to another phone call. Every decision felt overwhelming. I kept thinking, “There has to be a better way.” I wasn’t a healthcare professional. I was a granddaughter trying to do the best I could with no roadmap and very little guidance,” she says. That experience led Nikki to start Caring Haven so families could receive compassionate care at home. However, soon she realized home care wasn’t enough. Families also needed someone to educate them, guide them, connect them to resources, and remind them they weren’t alone, and that’s why she founded Caregiver OneCall.

I’ve spoken with caregivers who haven’t slept through the night in years. I’ve met daughters who emptied their retirement accounts to keep a parent safe, and husbands quietly grieving wives who are still alive because dementia has slowly taken the person they knew.

Nikki says that caring for her grandmother taught her where the caregiving systems fail. She adds, “I couldn’t change what my family went through, but I could dedicate my life to making sure other families had a better path. Like so many families, I suddenly found myself responsible for making decisions I wasn’t prepared to make. I was trying to coordinate care, understand resources, advocate for someone I loved, and somehow keep my own life moving forward. It was overwhelming, isolating, and far more complicated than I ever imagined. That experience became the foundation for everything I do today. I never set out to build organizations. I set out to make sure other families didn’t have to navigate caregiving the way mine did.” In Nikki’s opinion, people often think the hardest part of entrepreneurship is money. Parents caring for children with disabilities while wondering who will care for them one day. The hardest part is knowing that every time we answer one call, thousands of caregivers still don’t know we exist.” Building two mission-driven organizations has also meant hearing “no” over and over again. No funding. No partnership. No response. No room in the budget. Those have been ongoing challenges for Nikki. She says that families don’t stop needing help because funding runs out, and admits there have been moments when she questioned whether she could keep going. Yet every time she thought about stopping, another caregiver reminded her why she couldn’t. Through each experience, Nikki says she has learned that resilience isn’t about pretending things are easy. It’s about getting up after every disappointment and continuing anyway. “I’ve built relationships instead of trying to build everything alone. I’ve learned from mentors, leaned on community partners, listened to families, and stayed focused on the reason this work exists. When the mission is bigger than your fear, you keep moving.” In business, Nikki says that what she loves most is watching people realize they’re no longer alone. She adds, “Sometimes it’s helping someone understand a dementia diagnosis. Sometimes it’s finding respite so a caregiver can finally rest. Sometimes it’s simply letting them know that they are not alone, and assuring them that we’re going to figure this out together. Sometimes changing a life begins with answering the phone.”

Nikki shares that her grandmother will always be her greatest inspiration, and says she never imagined that caring for her would one day inspire an organization dedicated to supporting thousands of family caregivers. “My grandmother’s story became the reason mine changed,” she says. Nikki is also inspired by the caregivers she meets every day. “They continue showing up despite exhaustion, grief, financial strain, and uncertainty. Their strength deserves more than admiration. It deserves action.” When asked if there is anything she would change about her journey in business, believing in herself sooner is her response. She adds, “For too long, I thought I needed permission before taking the next step. I worried about having enough experience, enough resources, or enough certainty. Looking back, I realize confidence isn’t something you wait for. It’s something you build by taking the next step. Purpose doesn’t wait for perfect timing, and neither should we.” The advice she offers to others who may follow a path similar to hers is clear. “Know why you’re doing it, and don’t chase success. Solve a real problem. If you spend your time creating something people genuinely need, success has a way of following. Also, don’t wait until everything is perfect, and start before you feel ready. Ask questions, build relationships, accept help, and keep learning. You must be able to pivot, and don’t be married to your way. And most importantly, don’t build something just because it can make money. Build something that makes a difference.” What does the future look like for Nikki and her brands? She states they are at a turning point. “Family caregiving is no longer a private family matter. It’s a workforce issue, a healthcare issue, and an economic issue affecting millions of Americans every single day. Yet caregivers remain one of the most overlooked populations in our country. I’m building Caregiver OneCall so no family caregiver has to face one of life’s hardest journeys alone. She believes that employers, healthcare providers, policymakers, businesses, and communities all have a role to play. “If we truly value caregivers, we have to stop thanking them after they’ve burned out and start supporting them before they do. When caregivers are supported, families are stronger, communities are healthier, and everyone benefits.” In conclusion, Nikki shares, “Caregiving will touch nearly every family at some point in life. The question isn’t whether we’ll need caregivers. It’s whether we’ll finally give them the support they deserve when that moment comes. Mi’Amor L. Johnson of Milwaukee, WI, possesses a genuine love for people, especially her family, and words. While managing the day-to-day rigors of being a teenager, which involves school, sports, listening to music, hanging out with friends, and more, Mi’Amor also loves to write. Writing is a gift that Mi’Amor realized early in her young life. She says, “I began officially writing when I was 10 years old, but I unofficially began writing even younger than that.” Mi’Amor shares that her vision came from looking through her notebook and writing down random thoughts about her name, prayers, etc. Amazingly, at age 10, she wrote her first book, and that was when it all became serious for her. “The vision honestly came from my mom and dad. I saw writing as something that I randomly did, but they saw it as greatness, and as a gift.” Mi’Amor has published several books that are intended for young readers between the ages of 3 and 10. Her works are part of a series about a young character named Samantha. Samantha, Mi’Amor says, is a fictional character who gives children a lot to look forward to and teaches lessons about life, morals, and history. One of the books, 10 Days With Samantha, takes readers through a 10-day journey in the day-to-day life of a little girl named Samantha. In 10 Days with Samantha, Mi’Amor creates this young girl who is simply excited about life. She shares the love and joy Samantha has for her family members and friends. Readers learn what makes Samantha happy and what makes her afraid, and also learn that it’s because of her own moral convictions and daily reflections that Samantha is able to overcome her fears and struggles. Readers truly get a chance to practice connection with the thoughts and feelings of another child, and Mi’Amor says this happens not only for the sake of knowledge, but to demonstrate true care and concern with joy and gratitude. Mi’Amor closes each day of the book with a simple prayer for Samantha, and she says that Samantha is a character that readers will learn to love and enjoy because of the good characterization skills utilized in the story she has written. Mi’Amor says that what she loves most about writing and her published works is how they bring her closer to helping others. Writing also provides her with an opportunity to make her voice heard. “While there is usually “Samantha” in my stories, she often represents me in disguise,” she says. Mi’Amor shares that her parents inspire her more than anyone else. Both are published authors, and Mi’Amor has witnessed them writing her entire life. She says that her parents are also the most intelligent people she knows, and they inspire and motivate her to strive for greatness. As a young aspiring author, Mi’Amor shares that there is so much she doesn’t talk about that runs constantly through her mind. This includes things such as questioning herself. “Am I good enough?” “Will I be unheard or misunderstood?” “Will I be taken seriously?” She has also encountered writer’s block and asked: “Is this writing thing for me for real?” Mi’Amor shares she has countered those thoughts by praying continuously and speaking positive affirmations into existence. “After I pray, I focus on what I’m asking for and speak as if it has already come to pass,” she says. Dr. Johnson’s work and advocacy hasn’t happened without recognition. Her accolades include receiving a Community Leader/Life Coach Award in 2023 from “It Takes A Village”. She was awarded The Truth Radio 101.7’s Community- Education Award in 2024. Also in 2024, she received the Wisconsin GHP Mental Health Advocacy Award, along with a LiveWire Excellence Life Coach Award. Dr. Johnson has been featured in several publications and published books. Dr. Johnson says that what she loves most about work is her ability to help her clients gain clarity, accountability, and confidence. She adds, “I love that I am able to allow my clients to experience and appreciate the unbiased, non-judgmental space to explore ideas, set realistic goals, and stay motivated to overcome obstacles. For Dr. Johnson, a significant challenge she has faced has been maintaining a steady client base, marketing, and establishing a wide range of credibility. “I’ve dealt with the challenge of keeping my company open as well as income instability. I’ve learned to weather the storm by remaining consistent and optimistic. I’ve developed the mindset of the importance of remaining resilient and the art of being able to rebrand myself and keep myself in front of my audience or the group who needs my services. Even more, I’ve been challenged with balancing my personal and professional life. I have countered this by setting boundaries for myself to ensure that my mental health is fine and my personal life is well balanced,” she says. For others who may follow a path similar to that of Dr. Johnson, she offers some sound advice. “Remain consistent and set boundaries for yourself. I would also encourage you to consistently assess your client’s progress as well as the progress of your business aspect of coaching. Make sure you continue with self-improvement and personal growth.
