BUILDING AS URBAN FOREST FOR A VIABLE CANADIAN NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION

How can a greenhouse be maintained in a climate increasingly prone to cold snaps and heat waves, adjacent to a frantic urban street in a fragile riparian landscape?
The project sought an answer from the beginning that departs from economic development models (take-makeuse-throw away) to focus on a circular economy, repurposing, and suspending the construction investment in
a loop. An early decision was made to limit concrete and steel use, which is energy and carbon-intensive, directing construction instead to large quantities of mass timber, extensive sitework, and environmental improvements. These costs are then mitigated at the level of detailing, where resources chosen and spaces enclosed are ‘built for change’, with modularity, durability, and adaptability in mind. The initial costs are far outweighed by the prolonged building and material lifespan, and a highly specific design integration with the site. Furthermore, the building strives to be energy positive through heat generation and recirculation from the greenhouses, storage, and heat release via integral Trombe walls, and stackeffect natural ventilation. Additional passive principles are employed, like photovoltaics, a responsible glazing ratio and continuous airtight, highly insulated envelope.

THE SENSORY EXPERIENCE OF HEMP-LIME ARCHITECTURE

This research explores the multisensory properties of hemp-lime construction as an antidote to the overly visual experience of contemporary architecture.
The project begins design from the material and elaborates on the senses involved with the dynamics of hemp walls: the airy trio of humidity, thermal, and sound. By dissolving the complexity of a conventional wall, where the layers act separately, it is compared to a hemp-lime composition which acts in unison. Throughout, the research strives to be environmentally responsible with methods of construction that consider the life cycle of the material; from the conception of a carbon-negative product to the built experience, and to its afterlife of being recycled or fully decomposed. Alongside the historical significance of hemp and lime, the project works at crafting a space of reverence, located in the sacred site of St Raphael’s Cemetery (Ontario), that cleanses the occupant’s senses through materiality.
