I wish to congratulate each of you on your outstanding achievements in academic excellence. We salute you in our Honors Celebration today for your hard work, dedication, and determination to continue the legacy of excellence at Tennessee State University (TSU). We are immensely proud of the number of Dean’s List students (2,459), President’s List students (154), and Honors College Graduating Seniors (247) who are being recognized today for their outstanding academic achievements.
We are also honored to have Mr. Blake Crawford, a graduating senior from the College of Agriculture, as the keynote speaker today. Blake serves on the University Honors College Student Leadership Council as Mister Honors for the 2025-2026 academic year. He has been accepted into the Masters in Sustainability Management Program at Columbia University and is a Columbia HBCU Fellow.
As President of Tennessee State University and former student of our beloved alma mater, I commend you for your tenacity and diligence. Your high grade-point average is a direct reflection of your determination and drive for success, all while serving as role models to your peers. I wish all the honorees continued success in their chosen fields. May your path be blessed and prosperous.
Sincerely,
Dwayne Tucker President
Blake Crawford is a native of Chicago, Illinois, and a senior at Tennessee State University majoring in Agricultural Science with a concentration in Environmental Science and a proud member of the TSU Honors College, where he was selected Mr. Honors College. Known for blending academic excellence with community impact, Blake founded the Occasional Good Deed Club, a multi-city volunteer and social entrepreneurship organization now active across Nashville, Chicago, Los Angeles, Savannah, and Ithaca. The organization operates around a simple but powerful “earn the party” ethos, doing good before celebrating. Blake graduates in May 2026 and will continue his studies at Columbia University, earning his M.S. in Sustainability Management as a Columbia HBCU Fellow.
University Honors College
In 1963, Dr. Walter S. Davis, who was the second President of Tennessee State University (TSU), appointed a committee that was charged with the responsibility of studying honors programs and determining the feasibility of establishing one at the University. After completing the investigation, the committee recommended that TSU keep pace with many other universities throughout the country. As a result, an Honors Program for first-year students started in the fall semester of 1964. Sophomore through senior level course work was added annually throughout 1968, thus marking the year of the first student to graduate with “University Honors”, a distinction that is reserved for students who have successfully completed the requirements of the University Honors College (UHC).
Dr. McDonald Williams became the director of the Honors Program at TSU in 1966 and held that position until his retirement in 1988. Additionally, he gave 30 years of distinguished service as an English professor at TSU. The University Honors Center, which is now located in the Harold M. Love Sr. Student Success Center, was named the McDonald Williams Honors Center on October 31, 1995. Dr. Joan Elliot served as interim director from 1988 to 1990, Dr. Mayibuye Monanabela served as director from 1990 to 1992, and Dr. Sandra Holt from 1992 to 2013. The current dean, Dr. Coreen Jackson, was appointed in 2013 to take the helm of the Honors Program.
It was the desire of former President Glenda Glover and the administrators to implement the goal of the Academic Master Plan 2008-2028 that enhanced the Honors Program and transitioned it into an Honors College. Dr. Jackson took the lead in the application process, and in January 2016, the Tennessee Board of Regents and the Tennessee Higher Education Committee approved the Honors Program to be elevated from an Honors Program to an Honors College. The Honors College currently consists of over 704 multi-disciplinary, high-achieving scholars who must maintain an overall GPA of 3.25 or above. The Honors College boasts world-class faculty, who are nurturing yet have high expectations of their students, who are challenged with rigorous course work. Students who love to be challenged academically tend to excel in their studies, enjoy community service to make a difference in the lives of others, conduct scholarly research, and engage in professional and career development. They relish the warm and engaging, tight-knit, family-type community that the Honors College provides. As a result, our assessment shows that Honors College has a 93.99% Fall to Fall retention rate and graduates all of its seniors, with approximately 83% earning their University Honors distinction. Today, we are pleased to salute the Honors graduates who have excelled in their academics, many of whom have already landed high-level positions with top companies and been accepted into medical schools, law schools, pharmacy schools, graduate programs, and other professional schools.
We are proud of all the Dean’s List and President’s List students as well for their outstanding achievements.
It is our honor to celebrate you with this observation of academic excellence and a commitment to higher education during the 2026 Honors Celebration.

Dr. Samantha Morgan-Curtis, Chapter President
The primary objective of the National Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is the recognition and encouragement of superior scholarship in all academic disciplines. For undergraduate initiates, as juniors, students must be in the top 7.5 percent of their class; and as seniors and graduates, students must be in the top 10 percent of their class. Moreover, the Society serves the interests of the students capable of excellence by insisting that in order to acquire a chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, an institution must provide the means and atmosphere conductive to academic excellence. Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897, and the TSU chapter was established in April 1994.
