Literature:
T. D. Whitaker, LL.D. F.S.A., The History and Antiquities of the Deanery of Craven in the County of York, London, 1805, pp. 282-283.

The present beakers are one of two sets that Nicholas Tufton, 3rd Earl of Thanet (1631-1679), presented to his attorneys, as recorded by T. D. Whitaker, LL.D. F.S.A., The History and Antiquities of the Deanery of Craven in the County of York, London, 1805, pp. 282-283
“I am obliged to the respectable correspondent, the Rev. Mr. Swire, rector of Melsonby, for the following anecdote, relating to this transaction. Nicholas earl of Thanet gave to John Coates, of Kildwick Grange, a set of silver-beakers with his arms engraven thereon; and another set, plain, to Roger Coates, of Roydhouse, who were both attorneys, and has particularly assisted him in recovering his estates in Craven, which were forcibly held by his brother Sir John Tufton; and especially by prevailing upon the tenants of Silsden to return to Nicholas - The first set are still in the possession of the Swire family.”
While recorded in 1802 as still being with the family, the first set was to appear on the market just over a century later when sold by Miss Coats [sic], of Fergusite House, at Christie’s, London, 6 May 1903 at which time they were purchased by Mallett and sold to J. C. Butterick. His subsequent sale, in 1935, of the beakers saw them purchased first by William Randolph Hearst and later by Archibald Alexander Hutchinson. Hutchinson was to donate them to the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard, in 1949 where they remain to this day (1949.114.1.A-E).

The following lots represent a portion of a service of silver that was engraved for the marriage, in 1766, of John Crewe, 1st Baron Crewe (1742-1829) and Frances Anne Greville (d.1818), daughter of Fulke Greville (1717-1806) and Frances Macartney, though as Crewe was not created Baron Crewe until 1806 the coronet would have been added after that date.
Crewe was the eldest son of John Crewe, Member of Parliament for Cheshire between 1734 and 1752, and grandson of John Offley Crewe who had also held the same seat before him. On his father's death, in 1752, he succeeded to Crewe Hall and in 1764 was chosen High Sheriff of Cheshire. He entered parliament at a by-election in 1765 as Whig member for Stafford; but at the next general election, in 1768, he was returned unopposed for Cheshire, which he represented for the next 34 years. He was never opposed for his parliamentary seat and was presumably well regarded locally, being described as 'an enlightened agriculturalist and a good landlord'.
In the factional politics of the Whig Party, Crewe was initially a friend and follower of the Duke of Grafton, but later became a particular supporter of Charles James Fox, supposedly providing him £1,200 a year. After Fox's resignation from office in 1782, the incoming administration considered offering Crewe some governmental office to secure his support, but were told that his only ambition was for a peerage. He remained loyal to Fox, and in February 1784 was on Fox's list of new peers to be made should he return to office as he hoped. Fox did not succeed in returning to power at that point, but Crewe was finally created Baron Crewe, of Crewe in the County Palatine of Chester on 25 February 1806 when Fox returned to office in 1806.
Crewe rarely spoke in the House of Commons, and more than half his recorded contributions concerned a single measure, the Parliament Act 1782 which thereafter bore his name. This was an attempt to curb a particular source of corruption in elections: in many of the rotten boroughs of the period, only a few votes were needed to swing elections, and it was common for those who held the power of appointment to various well-paid official posts to reserve these for voters in return for co-operation at election time. The scale of the problem may
be judged by Prime Minister Rockingham's statement that 11,500 officers of customs and excise were electors, and that 70 Commons seats were decided chiefly by such votes. William Dowdeswell had attempted in 1770 to put a stop to this practice by preventing officers of the Custom, Excise and Post Office from voting. This measure had not reached the statute book, but Crewe introduced a bill with the same object in 1780 and again in 1781, succeeding on the latter occasion in passing it into law. Unfortunately, the new regulation was easily evaded, as the power of patronage was simply shifted to offer lucrative offices to the voters' relatives instead of to the voters themselves.
He and Frances Anne Greville had two surviving children, John, who succeeded him in the peerage, though having become estranged from the family, and Elizabeth Emma Crewe, who married Foster CunliffeOffley.

Sir Robert Offley Ashburton Crewe-Milnes, 2nd Baron Houghton, until 1895 when he was created Earl of Crewe and subsequently Marquess of Crewe in 1911 (1858-1945). He was to marry first, in 1880, Sibyl Marcia Graham (1857-1887), daughter of Sir Frederick Graham, 3rd Baronet, and later Lady Margaret Etienne Hannah Primrose (18811967), daughter of Archibald Philip, 5th Earl of Rosebery and his wife Hannah de Rothschild. As the couple's only son was to die in childhood, the title of Marquess of Crewe became extinct on the death of Sir Fredrick in 1945, and his chattels were inherited by his last surviving daughter, Lady Celia Hermione Crewe-Milnes (1884-1985), who married Sir Edward Clive Milnes-Coates, 2nd Baronet (18791971), and by descent.

Coloured Stones. It should be noted that gemstones are often treated to improve their appearance. Heating, for instance, can intensify the colour or transparency of sapphires and rubies, whilst oiling can improve the clarity of emeralds. The international jewellery trade generally accepts these methods. Once heated, the colour enhancement is permanent, though there may be some effect on the durability of the gemstone in question. Once a gemstone has been oiled, the process may need to be repeated in the future to maintain the clarity. Certificates. Some lots are accompanied by gemmological certificates which give an opinion on some or all of the gemstones included in that particular piece. These certificates may have been obtained by Tennants or supplied by vendors. It is important to note that the content of these certificates is not guaranteed by Tennants and we cannot be held responsible for any disagreement over the content of certificates after the sale or for a retrospective change in opinion by the providers of any of the certificates.
All Lots are sold as seen, and the absence of any reference to the condition of a watch does not imply the lot is in good condition and without defects, repairs or restorations. Most watches have been repaired in the course of their normal lifetime and may now incorporate parts not original to them. We do not undertake any inspection of any watches prior to any Sale. We make no representation or warranty that any watch is in working order. As watches often contain fine and complex mechanisms, Prospective Buyers should be aware that a general service, change of battery or further repair work, for which they are solely responsible, may be necessary.
