Provenance:

Sir John Jarvis, 1st Bt. (1876-1950) and by descent.

Sir John Jarvis was born in March 1876 in Harpenden. He had a successful career as an industrialist and represented Guildford in the House of Commons from 1935 to 1950 but is perhaps best remembered for his philanthropic efforts for Jarrow during the depression of the 1930s.

Though he lived in Hascombe, Surrey, a visit to Jarrow, suffering at the time with an unemployment rate of 80%, inspired him to launch an appeal for donations. The fund eventually raised some £40,000 which was used to buy materials to enable men in Jarrow to continue working, on tasks such as constructing playgrounds and sports facilities and the redecoration of houses.

Jarvis also used his own money to support the cause, buying for example, the decommissioned liner Olympic, the sister ship to the ill-fated Titanic, and sending it to Tyneside to be broken up. These efforts enabled the establishment of new businesses in the Jarrow area. Having already been created a Baronet Jarvis was also made a freeman of Jarrow in 1935 and he was remembered with a plaque on the walls of Jarrow Town Hall after his death.

Peregrine Widdrington (1692-1748/9), painted on ivory and set within a wavy border 80mm wide by 60mm deep by 63mm high, gross weight 7oz 6dwt, 227gr

Hon. Peregrine Widdrington (1692-1748/49) was the second son, and third child, of William Widdrington, 3rd Baron Widdrington (16561695) and his wife Alathea Fairfax, daughter of Charles Fairfax, 5th Viscount Fairfax of Emley (d.1671). J. A. Skeet records his life in History of the Families of Skeet, Somerscales, Widdrington, Wilby, Murray, Blake, Grimshaw and Others, London, 1906, pp. 109-111, noting that he was baptised in the civil parish of Blankney in the North Kesteven district of Lincolnshire.

The family, named after the village of Widdrington in the County of Northumberland, were staunch Catholics and supporters of the Stuart claim to the crowns of England, Scotland and Ireland. Such was their dedication to the cause that Peregrine, along with his elder brother William, by this point 4th Baron Widdrington, were taken prisoner after the Battle of Preston. During his incarceration Peregrine was to lose his wealth as well as contracting an ailment known as spotted fever, though he luckily recovered. His brother was initially sentenced to death for treason but was instead spared and allowed to retire to Bath, though only after forfeiting his title and estates.

Peregrine had been educated in the Low Countries, probably at the English Jesuit College at St Omer. The school had been founded in 1593 in Artois but was forced to move several times, eventually relocating to Stonyhurst with the founding of Stonyhurst College. He went on to marry Mary Franisca Shireburn (d.1754), only surviving child and heir of Sir Nicholas Shireburn, 1st Baronet of Stonyhurst. Mary had previously been married to Thomas Howard, 8th Duke of Norfolk (1683-1732).

Her marriage, in 1733, to Peregrine was recorded in the Gentleman’s Magazine but not in the parish register, suggesting that they had been married by a Catholic priest. The marriage seems to have been a happy one with the duchess penning a touching epithet to him at Shireburn Chapel at Mitton, where he was interred, as quoted by Skeet, op. cit. p. 109:

In this vault lies the body of the Hon. Peregrin [sic] Widdrington. The Hon. Peregrin [sic] Widdrington was the youngest brother of William, Lord Widdrington, who died April the 17th 1742. This Peregrin [sic] was a man of the strictest friendship and honour, with all the good qualities that accomplished a fine Gentleman; he was of so amiable a disposition and so engaging, that he was beloved and esteemed by all who had the honour and happiness of his acquaintance, being ever ready to oblige and to act the friendly part on all occasions, firm and stedfast [sic] in all his principles, which was delicately fine and good as could be wished in any man; he was both sincere and agreeable in life and conversation. He was born May the 2nd 1692 and died February 4th 1748/9. He was with his brother in the Preston affair, 1715, where he lost his fortune and health by a long confinement in prison. This monument is set up by the Dowager Duchess of Norfolk in memory of the Hon Peregin [sic] Widdrington

The suggestion of Peregrine losing his fortune would seem not to have been entirely true based on his will, proved on 16 February 1747/8. By the time of his death he was living in Hanover Square, in what is now a highly fashionable part of London. His will lists not only a house in Chiswick but also estates in Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Leicestershire and Warwickshire. He seems to have left most of the estates to his nephew the Hon. William Tempest Widdrington. The present box, dated some 15 years after Peregrine’s death was presumably intended as a tribute to the generosity shown to his nephew and his descendants.

Condition Reports

We are happy to provide Condition Reports to Prospective Buyers, but would welcome your request as soon as possible, preferably at least 48 hours before the Day of Sale. A Condition Report is an honest expression of our opinion, not a statement of fact and is provided as a service to the Seller. We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.

Caveat Emptor

The principle of caveat emptor applies to the sale of all goods sold at auction by us. Furthermore, we have no control over the condition of any item offered for sale.

Additional Images

Requests for additional images of items in the sale can made up to 48 hours before the Day of Sale.

We offer an online bidding service via our own platformTennants Live Bidding at www.tennants.co.uk. Items purchased via this platform will be subject to an additional 1.5% commission charge plus VAT at the prevailing rate. We also offer online bidding via www.the-saleroom.com for prospective buyers who cannot attend the sale. Items bought via this platform will be subject to an additional 4.95% commission charge plus VAT.

(b) confirm that you are authorised to provide these credit/bank details to Tennants through www.the-saleroom.com and agree that Tennants are entitled to permit the shipping of the goods to the card holder and card holder address provided in fulfilment of the sale.

Agency

We act as agents for the Seller, whose details remain confidential. If you buy at auction your contract is with the Seller, not us.

Jewellery

Coloured Stones. It should be noted that gemstones are often treated to improve their appearance. Heating, for instance, can intensify the colour or transparency of sapphires and rubies, whilst oiling can improve the clarity of emeralds. The international jewellery trade generally accepts these methods. Once heated, the colour enhancement is permanent, though there may be some effect on the durability of the gemstone in question. Once a gemstone has been oiled, the process may need to be repeated in the future to maintain the clarity. Certificates. Some lots are accompanied by gemmological certificates which give an opinion on some or all of the gemstones included in that particular piece. These certificates may have been obtained by Tennants or supplied by vendors. It is important to note that the content of these certificates is not guaranteed by Tennants and we cannot be held responsible for any disagreement over the content of certificates after the sale or for a retrospective change in opinion by the providers of any of the certificates.

Watches

All Lots are sold as seen, and the absence of any reference to the condition of a watch does not imply the lot is in good condition and without defects, repairs or restorations. Most watches have been repaired in the course of their normal lifetime and may now incorporate parts not original to them. We do not undertake any inspection of any watches prior to any Sale. We make no representation or warranty that any watch is in working order. As watches often contain fine and complex mechanisms, Prospective Buyers should be aware that a general service, change of battery or further repair work, for which they are solely responsible, may be necessary.

CITES Regulations/Ivory Act 2018

CITES-restricted items and Ivory Exempt items will be accompanied by a current CITES Article 10 licence/Ivory Exemption Declaration where applicable and the licence/exemption declaration number will be displayed within the original catalogue description (required by UK law). Both CITES Article 10 licences and Ivory Exemption Declarations are non-transferable and buyers must apply for a new Article 10 licence/Ivory Exemption Declaration in their name if they wish to sell to a third party.

It is the sole responsibility of the buyer and/or contracted shipping agent to have in place the correct CITES re-export and import licences into the buyer’s chosen country before shipping can be undertaken.

CITES regulations are given on www.ukcites.gov.uk or may be obtained from:
