The only thing that remains in our hands is what we do with the time we have and how we live a given day. The knowledge of this fragility can either transform us or crush us. We can either seek solace in self-destructive ways, or we can seek purpose and strength. Hashkiveinu reminds us that the life we have been given is a gift. Not one of us is exempt from this truth.

Life is fragile. We remind ourselves of this each night before we go to bed. We pray that we can lie down in peace and that tomorrow we will rise up. We pray because we understand that life is a fragile gift. Not an entitlement, not a given. None of us knows when our time will come. The gay community learned this lesson through AIDS, which matured us in a tremendously painful way. Hashkiveinu acknowledges the evil that surrounds us and prays for protection.

A Prayer before Marching for Equality â—‹â—?
And so, today, we march. We march to tell the world that every human being is created b’tzelem Elohim. We march to show pride in those who share the beauty and wholeness of their idenitites. We march to show solidarity with those whose identities are known only to themselves. We march for those in fear who cannot march. We march as allies, we march as friends, we march as family. We march as Jews. Neitzei Hasadeh- Let us go forth and let our message ring out, that God loves us all, that we love us all, and that love conquers all.

We have marched. When God called to Abram, Lech l’cha, “Go forth!,” Abram walked to the land God showed him. When we endured the pain of enslavement in Egypt, We put one foot in front of the other.
