A New Year of Hope, Resilience, and Community As our nation celebrated its 250th anniversary, we commemorated far more than a milestone in history. We celebrated the enduring ideals that have defined America—freedom of thought, the pursuit of knowledge, the courage to innovate, and the belief that together we can build a brighter future. For more than 75 years, Temple Sinai has embraced these same ideals while remaining firmly rooted in our Jewish values and traditions. Ours is a community where faith is nurtured, learning is lifelong, friendships are formed, and every generation has the opportunity to deepen its connection to Judaism. Together, we have created a congregation that is both welcoming and vibrant—a place where we celebrate life’s joys, support one another through its challenges, and strengthen our commitment to our Jewish heritage. The past year has reminded us that the freedoms and security we cherish can never be taken for granted. Since the horrific events of October 7, Jews around the world have experienced an alarming resurgence of antisemitism. Many of us have found ourselves having difficult conversations with our children and grandchildren, explaining acts of hatred that we hoped they would never witness. We have also been called upon to respond to misinformation about Israel, Zionism, and the Jewish people’s enduring connection to our ancestral homeland. Yet, throughout Jewish history, our people have demonstrated extraordinary resilience. We have endured adversity not simply by surviving but by remaining steadfast in our faith, our traditions, and our commitment to one another. That resilience continues to define us today.

The High Holy Days remind us that every new year offers an opportunity for reflection, renewal, and hope. They challenge us to examine who we are, strengthen our relationships, and recommit ourselves to building a more compassionate and just world. As we enter this new year together, may we embrace those opportunities with gratitude, optimism, and purpose. One of the greatest blessings of Temple Sinai is our community. Whether gathering for Friday night services, participating in Adult Engagement programs, welcoming distinguished guest speakers, celebrating our holidays, or simply sharing time with friends, we are reminded that Judaism is meant to be lived together. Our congregation is more than a synagogue—it is an extended family that supports one another, celebrates together, and finds strength in our shared values and traditions. As we look ahead, there is much to anticipate. Our clergy, staff, and Board of Trustees remain committed to providing meaningful worship, enriching educational opportunities, engaging programs, and a warm, inclusive home for every member of our Temple Sinai family. Together, we will continue to strengthen Temple Sinai, support one another, and ensure that our community remains a place where Jewish life flourishes for generations to come. Judaism’s Sacred Temporary Dwelling One of my favorite holidays in the Jewish calendar is Sukkot, a seven-day festival where we step away from the comforts of our homes and dwell in a temporary structure called a Sukkah. This holiday, which closely follows Yom Kippur, can often be written off or overlooked, but to me it is one of the greatest teachers of resilience and adaptability. The Sukkah is not built to last forever. On the contrary, our tradition tells us that a Sukkah must be temporary in order for it to be kosher. And yet, we are taught that the Sukkah, despite being a temporary space, should be treated as if it is our only home during the holiday. We read in the Talmud, All seven days of Sukkot, a person renders their sukkah a permanent residence and their house a temporary residence. How so? If one has beautiful vessels, one takes them up to the sukkah. If one has beautiful bedding, one takes it up to the sukkah. One eats and drinks and relaxes in the sukkah. (Sukkot 28b) This may at first sound like an extraordinary effort for just one week. Moreover, for most of us, the idea of living in temporary spaces is a tremendous challenge. Why then, do we move all the items that feel like home into the Sukkah, only to move them back a week later?

I feel that this lesson is especially meaningful this year for our Temple Sinai community, as we begin a year of transition and liminality. Sukkot provides a framework (no pun intended) to navigate this temporary moment, reminding us that we have the power and possibility to celebrate the beauty of our community even as we know that some things will change. The start of a new Jewish year is always a time for reflection and growth, with rituals and clergy to ground us and guide us. Together, each year, we celebrate a new beginning for ourselves, and we look with hope toward an unknown future. Even in moments of transition, our tradition encourages us to seek out joy, fill our spaces with things and people that are precious to us, and appreciate the blessings we have. What a

Our sages knew that we are creatures of comfort, resistant to change and disruption. They also knew, as we know, that change is inevitable, and while we cannot prevent it, we can increase our ability to live with it. Sukkot then, simulates disruption, and offers a roadmap for us to not merely cope with change, but to embrace it. We enter into a space unfamiliar to us, one that is intentionally fragile and temporary, and we do our best to make it feel like home. By engaging in the practice of dwelling in Sukkot, we are reminded that life is uncertain, but we are resilient enough to face whatever lies ahead, and that home can be wherever we are together.

So Many Ways to Connect! The Adult Engagement Committee and I are excited for the year ahead! The theme for 2026-2027 is the diversity of Judaism. Our array of programs will reflect this, as we continue to expand our Jewish learning, while deepening our connections to one another. Our program year will start with An Evening with Jonny Daniels on Tuesday, October 6. Please save the date and join us for what’s sure to be a moving and impactful event as we hear his perspective on Israel today and we commemorate October 7 together. Adult Engagement is delighted to partner with Brotherhood to host Sinai’s own Scott Reich, who will be talking about his newly published book, One Day in September: Baseball, Brotherhood, and the Birth of the All-Star Game. We’re also thrilled to once again partner with Friend of a Friend to welcome another author from the Jewish Book Council; Zeeva Bukai will be here in November to tell us all about her novel, The Anatomy of Exile. Another of Sinai’s own, David White, will give us an update from ADL, as will Scott Richman, ADL’s Regional Director of New York and New Jersey, later in the program year. Films will include Unorthodox Education (with a talkback with the documentary’s producer) and Ain’t No Back to a Merry-Go-Round in

honor of Black History Month. Via Zoom from Israel, we’ll welcome Ariel Beery, who will discuss his book, Being Israeli After the Destruction of Gaza. In the spring, we’ll go on a tour of the Eldridge Street Synagogue and have lunch on the Lower East Side. As always, we look forward to new, engaging offerings from our outstanding clergy team, including adult education classes and world-class musical programs. Sinai Tribes are ongoing, and we’re looking for congregants of all ages to convene new Tribes. Please get in touch with me if you’re interested in leading – or participating in – one of these small groups. They’re a great way to form new friendships and build Jewish community. Lastly, keep an eye out for opportunities to join in our intergenerational programming throughout the upcoming year. These experiences are a joy to participate in and to behold!

Distribution will take place on October 17 at Roslyn High School On Sukkot, we are instructed to spend a week dwelling in a Sukkah, a temporary shelter exposed to the elements. We experience a tiny bit of what people who face housing insecurity experience every day. We are fortunate enough to return to warm, safe homes at the end of the holiday, but we know that many people cannot. Please donate your warm coats and winter accessories to Long Island’s most vulnerable. Coats, hats, gloves, and scarves can be dropped off in our temple bins through October 15. In addition to warm outerwear, we will also be collecting PARTY ATTIRE for teens and adults. This includes party dresses for women and girls (both long and short), as well as suits, tuxedos, sport jackets, shirts, and ties for men and boys. C IS FOR CEREAL COLLECTION! On Sunday, February 1 We All RISE AGAINST HUNGER! This has become one of the most popular temple-wide events of the year and for good reason: anyone can participate, it’s easy, it’s fun and…we are helping feed those without food in a BIG way, which feels so good! Rise Against Hunger is a global effort to end hunger. We are always excited to host this fun social action project, where we will pack at least 20,000 meals for those in need throughout the world. While the summer months bring long, restful days, we know there will be busy days ahead when the High Holy Days come early this year in mid-September! With the second year of my term as President of Friend of a Friend just beginning, I am thrilled to highlight some of the special events that brought us together this past year and share many exciting upcoming activities and events we have planned for the fall season. If you have never been to a Friend of a Friend event, join us! We are a friendly, welcoming, nonjudgmental group of women of all ages and we would love to get to know you! Please enjoy these highlights from our 2025-2026 program year! America’s Semiquincentennial In honor of America’s 250th Anniversary, we have been learning about Jewish American women who inspire us. This beautiful theme will conclude with several fun and creative upcoming events. We will be making a special coffee table book and hope you will attend our book-making workshop where we will commemorate the year with pictures and inspiration from the women we’ve learned about. The coffee table book will only be ordered for those who want a printed copy, but we are hoping to offer a digital copy to everyone at no charge. If you love history, books, artistic projects, or simply enjoy getting together, please get involved! Lunch & Learn To prepare for our Friend of a Friend Shabbat service, Cantor-Educator Elena Schwartz guided us through two insightful Lunch & Learn programs. We reflected on aspects of Judaism while preparing to lead a service for and with the women of Temple Sinai. Thank you to Anne Niesenbaum and Diane Hirsch for hosting these lovely gatherings! Friend of a Friend Shabbat At our fourth annual Friend of a Friend Shabbat service, we welcomed the women of Temple Sinai to the bimah. We celebrated each other and the legacy of impactful Jewish American women to honor this year’s theme, Celebrating Women Who Sparkle and Shine! We even wore something special to add a little extra sparkle! FOF members contributed to all aspects of the service and brought delicious home-baked or lovingly selected desserts for a very special Oneg! Wine, Women, & Wisdom We also enjoyed a thoughtful session of Wine, Women, & Wisdom led by Cantor-Educator Elena Schwartz. This was a very insightful evening, in which we had a chance to learn more about the prayers we know and gain deeper insights into the history of Judaism. Thank you to Barbara Unger for graciously hosting this special evening! Closing Brunch At our closing brunch, we continued our year-long theme by asking everyone to embrace an Americana theme! The theme was delightfully represented in the delicious buffet arranged by Leslie Lewit Milner and Jill Wasser. At the brunch, Susan Moisoff, who spearheads our Rosh Hashanah honey fundraiser, showed us a video that offered attendees a chance to learn more about World ORT’s schools and programs that benefit from our honey sales. After brunch, we kicked up our cowboy boot heels and learned how to line dance with a fabulous country music line dancing instructor! Pride Shabbat The women of Friend of a Friend were thrilled to once again help to make Temple Sinai’s Pride Shabbat such a festive and memorable occasion! Thank you to Diane Hirsch and Pamela Potter Osit for arranging dessert and to everyone who participated in this very meaningful Shabbat!

Summer Potluck Our summer potluck dinner, once again generously hosted by Tammy Szerencsy, was a wonderful chance to catch up with each other while enjoying a wonderful meal and a celebration of summer birthdays! BROTHERHOOD At its heart, Brotherhood is about connection. Because the world is changing, our responsibility to one another has become even more important. Our tradition teaches, Kol Yisrael arevim zeh bazeh: “All Israel is responsible for one another.” That timeless principle reminds us that we are strongest when we stand together, support one another, and invest in our Jewish community. Brotherhood is about much more than planning events. We strive to be a welcoming community where men of all ages can build meaningful relationships, deepen their Jewish identity, serve our congregation, and find a genuine sense of belonging. By strengthening one another, we also strengthen Temple Sinai and help ensure that it remains a vibrant Jewish home for future generations. While July technically marks the beginning of our new year, we are taking the time to reflect on our past events and programs. We are in the process of reimagining Brotherhood for the next generation of Temple Sinai men. To help guide that effort, we are launching a Brotherhood Listening Project. By the time you read this article, we will have sent out a three question survey to the congregation. We would like to better understand how Brotherhood can best serve the men of Temple Sinai. To do that, we are asking some fundamental questions: What types of activities would inspire you to become more involved? What Jewish educational or spiritual experiences would be meaningful to you? And what opportunities to support our temple and serve the broader community would you find most rewarding? On Sunday, October 18, at 10:00 am, Brotherhood, in partnership with the Adult Engagement Committee, invites you to join us for a delicious bagel breakfast and an outstanding guest speaker. Our very own Scott Reich will discuss his recently published book, One Day in September: Baseball, Brotherhood, and the Birth of the All-Star Game. Discover the remarkable story of the 1917 exhibition game that brought baseball’s greatest stars together for a cause larger than the game itself and helped inspire today’s All Star Game. Whether you are a lifelong baseball fan or simply enjoy a great story, this promises to be an entertaining and engaging morning. We hope you will join us! Looking for something a little different? In November (date to be determined), Brotherhood will host an evening at NY Axe for a fun-filled axe throwing competition. Parent and grandparent involvement is essential to everything we do. Jewish learning takes root when it is lived at home as well as in the classroom, and we count on our families as full partners in this work. The Spirit of Kiruv In Jewish tradition, there is a beautiful concept called kiruv—literally, “drawing near.” Kiruv describes the ongoing, warm work of bringing people closer to Jewish life, to the synagogue, and to community. It is not a single event but a continuous invitation: a hand extended, again and again, welcoming every family further into Jewish learning, prayer, and belonging. Kiruv is at the heart of everything our Religious School offers—every program we run is, in its own way, an invitation to draw a little closer. This year, we will continue to create multiple opportunities to draw closer through: Family Education Programs - hands-on learning experiences designed for parents and children together.

We are living through a moment that asks more of us as Jewish educators, parents, grandparents and as a Jewish community. Family Shabbat and Holiday Experiences - Shabbat and Holidays programming that brings the whole family into the rhythm of Jewish time.

The Sinai Supper Club - a way for Religious School families to connect socially with one another while championing our community throughout the year. New This Year Weekly Student-Led Services - Our students will continue to participate in and lead weekday Religious School services on the bimah. This year, we are also introducing a new teaching element—a model Torah service—giving students hands-on experience with the structure, choreography, and meaning behind our sacred worship. Parents and grandparents will have an opportunity to participate in the Torah Services and have an aliyah. Mezuzathon Madness - Our students have been collecting tzedakah, and with those funds we will be replacing the mezuzot throughout the temple. Families will have the opportunity to join us and even lead prayers as each new mezuzah is affixed—a hands-on lesson in tzedakah, mitzvah, and the sacred act of marking our home as a Jewish home.

Long before they became the dedicated co-chairs of our Religious School Committee, Allyson Stumacher and Amy Zuflacht were once Religious School students themselves, complete with their own B’nei Mitzvah photos to prove it! In this Q&A with Cantor Elena, they look back on the Jewish experiences that shaped them and share their hopes, values, and excitement for the next generation of Temple Sinai students.

What is one thing happening in our Religious School this year that you are especially excited about?

Allyson Stumacher: I am especially excited for our students to have even more hands-on learning experiences that bring Judaism to life. My goal is for every child to feel excited and proud to be Jewish. When children actively engage with our traditions, holidays, and values, they develop meaningful connections that create lasting memories and inspire a lifelong love of Jewish learning.

AZ: One of my favorite religious school memories from growing up was being in the sanctuary with my friends singing songs and learning about the Jewish traditions. It was especially nice when we were invited on the bimah to participate in the weekend services and show off what we had learned.

Amy Zuflacht: One of the most amazing experiences that the religious school offers is the Holocaust program for the sixth grade. It is such a special and moving experience for all the children. I also look forward to parent involvement in the holiday boutique and latke party. What Jewish value or lesson do you hope every child takes with them from their years at Temple Sinai? AS: I hope every child leaves Temple Sinai with a genuine love for Judaism—its values, traditions, stories, and rich history. Judaism is a beautiful heritage that connects us across generations, and I hope our students embrace it with pride, curiosity, and joy. My greatest wish is that they continue to carry those lessons with them and feel a strong connection to their Jewish identity throughout their lives. AZ: The Jewish lesson I would hope every child takes with them from their years at Sinai would be the notion of chesed (loving-kindness); small acts such as welcoming a new friend, helping someone who is struggling, including others in a game, or speaking kindly to others. What is your favorite Religious School memory from when you were a student? AS: One of my favorite memories from Hebrew school was the school-wide Seder that was held each year before Passover. The temple ballroom was transformed with long tables where the entire Religious School gathered to celebrate together. Every class and many of the students had a special role in reading the Haggadah, making everyone an active participant. It was such a meaningful experience that truly brought the Passover

If you could invite any Jewish figure from history to visit our Religious School for a day, who would it be and why? AS: I would invite Anne Frank. I think our students would connect with her because she was a child whose story continues to inspire people around the world. Through her experiences before and during the Holocaust, she demonstrated remarkable courage, hope, and resilience in the face of unimaginable hardship. I believe she would encourage our students to appreciate the strength that comes from within, the importance of kindness and compassion, and the responsibility we all share to stand up against hatred and injustice. AZ: If I could invite any Jewish figure from history to visit the Religious School, I would invite Golda Meir. As one of the first women to lead a modern nation, she exhibits a sense of strength and determination. A strong Zionist, she helped support the creation of the state of Israel. Complete this sentence: “Our Religious School is a school children love because…” AS: Our Religious School is a school children love because it is warm, welcoming, and inclusive. Our dedicated teachers create a positive environment where every child feels valued, supported, and excited to learn. We strive to make Jewish learning engaging, meaningful, and fun, helping each student build lasting friendships and a lifelong connection to our Jewish community .

AZ: Our Religious School is a school children love because of the kind and caring clergy and religious school staff. They provide a warm and nurturing environment to all types of students and learners. The classroom environment is engaging and exciting for the children. It is a place to learn, socialize, and grow.

Wait ‘Til You See What’s in Store This Year! Welcome back to Temple Sinai’s Teen Program!! We’ve missed you so much all summer– really, it’s been SO quiet! But don’t worry, we’ve used this quiet time wisely to plan LOTS of fun and to restock our beloved Candy Cabinet with some fun new goodies too! We can’t wait to kick off another amazing year with you–we’re pretty sure it’s going to be our BEST ONE YET! There’s lots of new fun in store this year and of course your favorite Sinai classics too–I mean would it even be the teen program at Sinai without Sushi in the Sukkah???!

This year, we’re excited to introduce a new registration model designed to give teens the freedom to create an experience that’s uniquely their own. With our All Access Pass, teens can unlock a full year of opportunities—from social events and service projects to leadership experiences, Jewish learning, and so much more—all with the flexibility to choose what sparks their curiosity. Because the most meaningful journeys aren’t about following a single path—they’re about discovering new passions, trying something unexpected, and finding the people who make the adventure worthwhile. No longer limited to registering for a specific program, our teen program is now your (kosher) oyster! New to the Sinai Teen Community and not ready to commit just yet? That’s okay! Experience our wide variety of programs by trying out 5 sessions of ANY of them with our First Time Teen Discovery 5 Class pass! Opportunities Overview SORTY Sinai of Roslyn Temple Youth Group—is the premier social, Jewish, and service-oriented teen experience on Long Island! JCC? BBYO? Eat your heart out! Featuring exciting social, Jewish, and community service-based events 1-2 times a month and exclusive teen experiences, SORTY is simply THE place to be. Events are announced regularly and are planned for teens BY teens, including fan favorites: Sushi in the Sukkah, Hanukkah Hibachi, Lasertag, sporting events, and more! Sinai Experiential Workplace Learning (formerly Internship) We’ve renamed the internship program and changed things up a little, but mostly, it’s the program you know and love! At Temple Sinai, teens have the unique opportunity to gain real work experience in our classrooms and offices. Create your own schedule to work 1-2 hours a week in an area of the synagogue of your choice! PLUS, you can receive a stipend or community service to do it. PLEASE NOTE: All participants old and new are required to participate in an accompanying learning experience*, that will show you how to best incorporate your experience into future applications and resumés, and begin and continue to develop professional skills you’ll carry with you through life, including classroom management, goal setting, professional communication and more! Monday-Thursday between 3:00-7:00 pm Create your own schedule and work a maximum of 1-2 hours a week Meets 1x Weekly *The required learning component will take place in a hybrid model of synchronous and asynchronous sessions that occur once a month on a rotating schedule of select Monday/Wednesday evenings (when live).

SORTY Leadership Team (FOR ELECTED SORTY LEADERSHIP TEAM 2026-2027 ONLY) SORTY Leadership Team elected officials [elected in May 2026] are the driving force in planning and executing events for their peers. As a Leadership Team member, you’ll develop leadership and hands-on project management skills while working closely with like-minded teens and mentors. Together, you’ll brainstorm ideas, organize impactful events, and create meaningful experiences that foster community, enhance Jewish identity, and promote social responsibility, all while building lasting friendships and valuable skills for the future and earning a little community service, too! Leadership Team Meetings: Tuesdays 6:30-7:30 pm on ZOOM or 6:30-8:00 pm in-person • Executive Board (Presidents & VPs) meets 2x a month—once on ZOOM, once in-person • Full Leadership Team (Directors) meets every other month in person, Trustees attend every 2 months or as often as desired. Havdallah for Hunger Join us for an eye-opening monthly mitzvah experience serving those experiencing food insecurity and homelessness. Each month, we engage in a rotation of city-based sessions on the streets of NYC, time at the JCC Community Needs Bank, and at a local Adolescent Shelter. Together, we’ll prepare bagged meals and hygiene kits, shelve supplies, or hang out with homeless teens and young adults while learning about the Jewish values that drive our work, legislative policies that affect the people we work with, and more. Earn up to 40 Hours of Community Service! Saturdays 5:30-10:00 pm Meets 1x a month Hand in Hand Bring joy to housing-insecure youth currently residing in homeless shelters across NY through monthly fun, social, and educational activities. In alternating sessions, we’ll learn about the systemic issues that impact those affected, and participate in other community service opportunities that benefit them. Join us for this hands-on and educational experience that makes a real difference, PLUS, earn up to 25 hours of Community Service! Sundays 12:00-3:00 pm Meets 2x a month Confirmation (10th Grade) Our 10th grade students explore modern issues through the lens of ancient texts, tackle life’s big questions, and engage in critical conversations with Rabbi White and Rabbi Schachter. Participants are also encouraged to attend an extended weekend-long professional lobbying experience at the Religious Action Center in Washington, D.C from January 26-29, 2027. The confirmation program culminates in a meaningful Confirmation ceremony and dinner on Shavuot, when each of our confirmands will have the opportunity to be celebrated and to share their reflections with our community.
