The synagogue has many names. It is “a Beit Tefillah – a House of Prayer” and “a Beit Limmud –a House of Study.” Most common, we refer to the Temple as “a Beit Knesset – a House of Gathering.” Throughout history, as Jewish people have settled down, they have made for themselves a Temple home, as we know synagogue life is essential to our being. It’s at Temple where we explore our faith, where we experience the highs and lows of our life journeys, and where we make precious friendships that last a lifetime. Sixty years ago, 17 families took note that we needed a Reform synagogue in Ottawa, and here we are today. The friendships formed are countless, and we continue to connect.
These continue to be lonely days, in society at large but also as Jews. We’re questioning our place, often times struggling to express ourselves Jewishly. At the same time neighbours don’t know each other to the same extent that they have in the past, and individual needs have become prioritized over the communal. It’s from this context that we’ve turned to Temple, craving meaning in our lives in the context of authentic relationship. It’s not an accident that our numbers now exceed 400 households. I’m heartened that Temple is serving as an important hub in these challenging times.
At every age and stage, we have groups gathering to connect and flourish. TIRS, under the leadership of Ranit Braun and David Osterer is bursting with excitement, the love our kids share for one another is precious. Our teens recently hosted the entire NFTY Eastern Canada region, they were wowed by the Rideau Canal but more so by our leadership and inclusion. Thank you to Seline Herz Fischler and Jasmine Albagli for championing this weekend Kallah. Sarah

and Aaron Good are starting to program for people in their 40’s and 50’s, it’s not fair for the kids to have all the fun. Their monthly Monday night discussion group has become a hub of activity. Our seniors are hosting social gatherings and learning sessions, you are an inspiration to us all. Crossing generations, our Shabbat and holiday services are a place to make new friends as we aspire for a pause of shalom amidst the craziness outside. Take note of our potluck nights, an ideal setting to nosh and schmooze.
We have a number of holidays coming up. First Purim, then Passover, Yom Ha’Atzmaut and finally Shavuot. Note down the dates and join us at Temple as we celebrate as one. If you’re new to the Temple, welcome, we are so glad you’ve joined our family.
Let’s make the most of our Beit Knesset as we gather in friendship and love.
Rabbi Daniel Mikelberg

I’ve been reflecting on the past sixty years—back to 1966—when a small group of Ottawa’s Jewish residents dreamed of having a congregation to call their own. At the time, there was no building where they could gather to worship, celebrate, learn, or simply be together. It took several years before the building at 1301 Prince of Wales Drive became a reality, and in that in between period, those founding families met in private homes, rented halls, and even outdoors.
And here we are today—once again without a building to call our own while Temple undergoes renovation. Yet, just as our founders did, we continue to gather in living rooms, in borrowed spaces, and under open skies. In many ways, this moment brings us full circle, echoing the resilience and creativity that shaped Temple Israel from the very beginning.
“Temple on the Road” has taken us to ski slopes, along the Rideau Canal, through Parc Jacques Cartier, and to The Bayit. Our TIRS students—across all ages—are temporarily learning, playing, and singing at our sister congregation, KBI.
A group of working professionals has begun meeting in their homes, inviting guest speakers to inspire and spark meaningful conversation. A dedicated circle of seniors continues to gather in one another’s homes, leading rich discussions on a wide range of topics. Our pilot Havdalah initiative, “HAVA HAVADALAH,” is underway, and we hope more members will step forward as hosts and leaders. Occasional challah baking sessions will begin this spring. Also launching this spring is a new daytime program for those “Young at Heart,” offering opportunities to learn, connect, and socialize.

Our Wednesday Talmud class continues. Thursday minyan continues. Friday Coffee House continues, and our Friday and Saturday Shabbat services remain vibrant, grounding, and inspiring. Temple has not paused its commitment to community, learning, and spiritual connection—even without a permanent physical space.
I welcome your ideas for engaging our members during this Time of Transition. Click on my name at the bottom of any Weekly email or Weekender to send me a note. Let’s talk.
All are welcome at Temple Israel. L’Dor v’Dor

We are pleased to announce the launch of a new group, tentatively named 'Young at Heart', for Temple Israel members who enjoy connection, conversation, and community. The group will meet once every two weeks on a weekday afternoon for approximately 1½–2 hours in an event space that is accessible for everyone.
Each gathering will begin with a short social time, followed by a speaker, presentation, or fun activity. We’ll then continue the afternoon with coffee, cookies, and more time to socialize. This group is designed to be relaxed, friendly, and engaging — a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and strengthen connections within our Temple community.
Watch for dates and details in the upcoming Weekly notices.
All Temple members are welcome.

20, 2026:
After researching his Jewish Romanian background, Mark Palmer visited the birthplaces of his maternal grandparents to pay tribute and see what more might be found regarding his family’s Jewish Romanian roots.
The presentation includes an overview of Romanian history, primarily through a Jewish lens, including way of life, antisemitism and waves of emigration followed by a description of Mark’s travels and research ndings along with plenty of anecdotes and photos.
The presentation may be of interest to a variety of members: people curious about a country they know little about, individuals whose family hails from Romania, and others interested in embarking on their own exploration into their Jewish roots wherever that might be.

Canadian Jewish life has typically developed slowly. However, in recent years our community has evolved sharply in response to a surge in antisemitism and interestingly a wave of Canadian pride. We welcome Dr. Ko man from Toronto who will help us explore this moment in time and prepare as a Temple community for tomorrow.
David S. Ko man is the J. Richard Shi Chair for the Study of Canadian Jewry, an associate professor in the Department of History at York University, and Editor-in-Chief of Canadian Jewish Studies / Études juives canadiennes.
Delighted to cosponsor this weekend with Life and Legacy. We’ll honour the contributions of our Chai Legacy donors on Shabbat morning.

What an amazing weekend! From February 6-8th, FROSTY, Temple’s high school youth group, hosted 57 people from the newly created Central Canada region of NFTY! Teens and the advisors stayed at the Saint Lo hostel, the old prison!
Our weekend included Friday and Saturday services, a murder mystery, Tshirt decorating, a downtown scavenger hunt, skating on the canal and taking in winterlude events, a personal tour with Q&A on the House of Commons with MP Naqvi, two separate presentations from Stand With Us Canada, along with presentation on advocacy from a political science student, a jail tour of our accommodations, song sesh and oh so many snacks!
Feedback from our teens include: “A truly wonderful experience, a way to strengthen my ties to the community, my sense of identity and see the city of Ottawa in a new light. I feel like I’m part of something so much bigger than

myself.” “One of the greatest moments of my year. Brought me so much joy when I needed. Helped me feel truly connected to my community. When I have to stand up I know they got my back. And the lectures we received were very helpful. The vibes were truly wonderful. I felt safe, and very, very alive. I saw the city of Ottawa in a new way. Walked the canal. Learned new music. Dressed a friend up in a toilet paper dress in the parliament building. And the sleeping arrangements were comfortable, and the building had a fascinating history. Simply put, I loved Kallah."
Our event happened with the help of many people. We received a very helpful microgrant from JFO! Huge thanks to Catherine Deri-Armstrong who got us space at University of Ottawa, helped with all the setup and tear down and volunteered her time to help take care of the teens! MP Naqvi, and his assistant, Matthew Edginton, for helping us with space, and showing us an insider's view of the House of Commons at Parliament! And to all the parents who supported us!

Building on the success of previous years, in commemoration of Yom HaShoah 2026, CHES and the Embassy of Israel are once again coordinating a Zikaron BaSalon program. Zikaron BaSalon is an informal social gathering in private homes providing a novel approach to remember and learn about the Holocaust.
We are looking for volunteers willing to host a small gathering of their friends in their home on April 12th. These gatherings offer an intimate space in which participants hear directly from descendants of Holocaust survivors, who are provided by CHES. Speakers share their families' experiences of the Holocaust and reflect on how those histories continue to shape their lives today.
If you are interested in having a meaningful and worthwhile evening in your home by hosting a Zikaron BaSalon gathering, or have any questions, please email ana@chesatottawa.ca

Temple Israel is Ottawa’s Reform congregation where Jewish Life Happens -- committing ourselves to Kehilah K’lal Yisrael, and Tikun Olam.
We are a dynamic and welcoming congregation (Kehilah) where varied Jewish experiences offer pathways to learn and to experience G-d for all, respecting tradition and creating new celebrations.
We are an active liberal presence in the larger Jewish community (K’lal Yisrael).
We strive through social action to fulfill the Mitzvot of caring for others (Gimilut Chasadim) and repairing the world (Tikun Olam).
