Shana Tovah! It’s at the holiday season when we take a close look at the year just past and then focus our energies on the opportunities that tomorrow brings. We ground ourselves in our essential values brought to us from Torah: tikvah - hope; tikkun olam – fixing the world; klal Israel – strengthening community. Our building is in the final stages of construction thanks to the remarkable generosity of our Temple friends. With our return imminent, our spirits are soaring. Soon we will truly live the values of inclusion and we will also benefit from a facility that is safer and more beautiful. We’re grateful to be able to bring our sacred intentions for the year next door to Temple as we pray that this season will be one of renewal.

Our High Holiday clergy team is Rabbi Daniel Mikelberg, Rabbi Emeritus Steven Garten, Cantor David Malecki, Rabbi Dara Lithwick and Student Rabbi Sue Potechin. No service would be complete without our wonderful Temple Israel Liturgical Choir, under the direction of accompanist Carol Gurofsky. Rabbi Dara Lithwick and Student Rabbi Sue Potechin will be focusing their attentions on a variety of alternative programming intended to connect with our diverse community.

We will primarily worship in the Hellenic Centre Assembly Hall. We have a variety of service options so that we can accommodate everyone comfortably. The Hellenic Centre parking lot is available for our use. To parents of young children, you can register your kids for babysitting in advance for both Rosh Hashahah and Yom Kippur morning. Lastly, we’re glad to of fer some of our sanctuary services livestreamed so that you can continue to participate from the comfort of your home.

Ela Ezkarah is a medieval poem which recounts the martyrdom of ten rabbis who were killed by the Romans following the destruction of the Second Temple. Rabbi Garten will lead us in a service reflecting on difficult periods of history, and our member Fran Klowdowski will speak to her mother’s story in the Holocaust.

As the sun begins to set, we will join together for concluding prayers including the final shofar blasts.

We will honour their memory as we grieve, reflect and carry the legacy of our loved ones forward. Led by Rabbi Mikelberg and Cantor Malecki. Rabbi Garten will guide us in words of memory.

CHAG SAMEACH: Hebrew for "happy holiday." The Yiddish equivalent is "Gut Yuntif." GAMAR CHATIMAH TOVAH: "May you be sealed (in the Book of Life) for (a) good (year)." KOL NIDRE: The words literally mean "all of my vows." These are the first two words of the famous prayer sung on Erev (the evening of) Yom Kippur. They refer to those promises we have (or will) be unable to keep despite our best efforts. L'SHANAH TOVAH TIKATEIVU: "May you be written (in the Book of Life) for a good year." MACHZOR: The High Holy Day prayerbook (as distinct from the Siddur, the Shabbat and daily prayerbook). ROSH HASHANAH: The "head of the year," in other words, the Jewish New Year. SEFER CHAYIM: The Book of Life. All of us hope that the book in which our names are written is the Book of Life. SELICHOT: The word "Selicha" means "forgiveness," "Selichot" is simply the plural. It is a reference to the prayers for forgiveness we say during this season, and the special service of penitence held at midnight on the Saturday night before Rosh Hashanah. SHOFAR: The ram's horn, blown by Jews on Rosh Hashanah to shake the soul and stir awareness of the special nature of these holy days. TASHLICH: The Hebrew word means, "to send, to cast out." This is the special ceremony on Rosh Hashanah afternoon in which Jews symbolically cast their sins (in the form of breadcrumbs) into a body of flowing water. TESHUVAH: The Hebrew word for "repentance," which literally means "turning" -- away from sin, towards the good. It is the central goal of these days. YAMIM NOR'AIM: Days of Awe. The Hebrew name for the High Holy Days. YIZKOR: "Remembrance." It is the name of the Memorial Service on Yom Kippur, and a prayer service in which we specify those whom we are remembering. YOM KIPPUR: The "Day of Atonement."

A YEAR OF RENEWAL Inevitably at this season we imagine what will be. As Rosh Hashanah arrives, we do our best to make our days sweet, both literally and figuratively. We have the opportunity to say so long to what was, and we actively take steps to open ourselves up to new possibilities. Some years this is more difficult than others, I recognize that we are feeling vulnerable at this moment. The Middle East continues to be in disarray, and we feel the weight of this chaos here in Ottawa. We have deep concerns for our own safety as well as for our children. This is complemented by economic instability, never mind the fear that we feel for our planet, seemingly aflame. Rightfully so, we are feeling unsteady, our concerns are many. Our holiday liturgy reminds us that there are many world phenomena for which we do not control. However, there are more qualities in our lives for which we are in the driver’s seat. We lift up the potential to foster blessings and build a better tomorrow. I am humbled to be the spiritual leader of Temple, it’s been remarkable to accompany our community over these past 7 years. I’m grateful for your trust. In recent days we have grown, quite considerably, now numbering over 400 families. This follows a pattern that many synagogues are finding post Oct 7th, it’s been referred to as a “synagogue surge.” It is from these difficult days that we are finding renewed meaning in our heritage, and we are craving a sense of Jewish community. I’m thrilled that Temple can provide this source and I’m eager to see the new directions that we carve out. On that note, the new year will include the opening of our renewed facility, December with any luck. We will be able to take pride in living our values, especially inclusion. We can also take solace with our extra focus on security. And amazing that this has been a team effort, we would not be here without each of you. We are rising to the occasion and continuing to serve as a progressive Jewish hub for the region. Let’s embrace days ahead, let’s imagine what can be, let’s look forward with hope. On the day before our grandson’s birthday, our daughter asked him how he felt about changing from age 7 to age 8. He paused, reflected, and replied, “Fier.” Proud? This reminded me of something simple and universal: we are all aging, every day. How do you feel as you get older? Proud? Happy? Anxious? Children first encounter Jewish life through the holidays celebrated within the family. Over time, these moments deepen: Shabbat becomes a pause in the week and a source of connection; Pesach teaches Freedom; Chanukah teaches Courage. These early experiences root children in the rhythms of Jewish living. As they grow, young people wrestle with change, question their choices, and begin to understand that being Jewish is both an inheritance and a burden – a tradition they carry and eventually take as their own. As adulthood takes shape, work, partnership, and community involvement become central. It is often the moment to join a synagogue, build a home, volunteer, and make future plans. Later, the balancing act intensifies, supporting parents while guiding children, confronting rising antisemitism, and forming like‑minded groups – Jews and non‑Jews – to respond with resilience. This is often a time of looking inward, into our neshama, questioning our values and how they align with the life we have built. Some call it mid-life crisis; others call it growth. Pirkei Avot asks: “Who is wise?” and answers: “One who learns from every person.” Sharing life stories, reflecting on our backgrounds, handing down family history, remembering our childhood – we come full circle. We become wiser and focus on what we pass on to younger generations. Elders’ stories become gifts, rituals become anchors, and resilience becomes a model. RENOVATION PROJECT We’re Getting Closer to Coming Home As our renovation enters an exciting new phase, we are excited to share another update with you. After years of planning and hard work, it is wonderful to see the transformation of Temple Israel taking shape. With our anticipated return in December, we are entering the final stretch of this extraordinary project.

The Building Is Taking Shape Work is progressing throughout the building: •

Sanctuary & Bimah: Framing and drywall are nearly complete, with technology, security and other building services being installed.

Community Room: Drywall and AV infrastructure are underway.

•

Lobby & Vestibule: New walls, ceilings and the elevator shaft are taking shape.

•

Kitchen, Washrooms & Offices: Drywall, ceilings and mechanical work are progressing.

•

Exterior: Roofing and work on the new addition continue.

•

Lower Level: Work continues on the elevator and new IT room

Looking Toward December There is still a lot to do, but the transformation is becoming increasingly visible. Our current expectation is that we will be able to come home to Temple Israel in December. We know how much our community is looking forward to that day. We are too. An Important Financial Update Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our members and friends, we reached our original $5 million fundraising goal. We are deeply grateful. As construction has progressed, however, we have encountered unexpected conditions that have added to the cost, including relocating underground plumbing for the

elevator, modifying hidden ductwork for the bimah ramp, rebuilding the exterior stairs and accessible entrance ramp, and removing hazardous materials not identified in the initial assessment. We have also faced additional security costs as the security environment facing Jewish institutions has changed significantly since the project was first planned. Strengthening access control, surveillance, perimeter protection and emergency systems is essential to ensuring that our community can gather safely. And the cost of a project of this size extends beyond construction itself. The overall Renewal Project includes HST, architectural and engineering consultants, professional fees, temporary rent for school and admin staff and shabbat and holiday services while we are out of the building, and other project-related expenses. These costs are an essential part of undertaking a major renovation and of allowing our community to continue operating while the work is underway. The delay in opening has also contributed to the budget increase. Together, these factors have resulted in the project being projected at approximately 15% over budget. EXTENDING OUR CAMPAIGN TO DECEMBER One Final Stretch: $750,000 To give our community the opportunity to help us complete the project responsibly, we are extending our fundraising campaign through December. We are seeking an additional $750,000 to complete the Renewal Project as a whole and bring this long-awaited transformation to the finish line. We continue to work carefully to control costs, find savings and determine what must be completed now and what can wait. A Jewish Home for the Next Generation This renewal is about more than a building. It is about creating a Temple Israel that is more accessible, more secure and ready to serve our community for generations to come. Those who built Temple Israel entrusted us with a vibrant Jewish community and a responsibility to carry it forward—l’dor va-dor, from generation to generation. Part of that responsibility is ensuring that we do not leave the next generation with the financial burden of the work we undertake today. We want them to inherit a renewed Temple Israel. We are almost there. If you are able, please consider making an additional gift, increasing your commitment, or encouraging family and friends to support the project.
