I know the High Holidays are not easy. Not for the clergy, and not for the ones sitting in the pews. And standing and sitting. It’s not the aerobics that are difficult – and if they are, be comfortable. Stay seated if you need. Or stay standing if that’s better for you. What’s difficult is this marathon where our job is to bare our soul. To look into our heart. To think about the year that was and think about who I am and who I wanted to be and if I am on the right path. To remember the devastating losses, we had this year. The setbacks and the scares. The health and relationship and career complications. And to settle into the idea that life isn’t always what we plan. To take this time seriously – not just to flip through the pages but to be embarrassingly present for yourself. And it’s also the time to think about the successes. To be able to pat yourself on the back for how far you’ve come, for how you’ve bounced back. To take this sacred time when phones are off and there shouldn’t be distractions and think about the things we did that were good. Especially in the ways we helped others or ourselves. The mitzvot we did – whether it was lighting Shabbat candles, or it was helping a friend in need. The hard work is diving deep. You don’t need to share your

thoughts with anyone – there is no confessional booth here. I know that connecting to God is hard. Judaism developed this idea of God who is invisible, who does not speak directly to us, who does not give us a representation that we can look at and feel better. Judaism demands a lot of us: to be our best selves for no reward, no promise of heaven, no handsome deity. There are shortcuts. If you want to see God, there are several hallucinogenic options there that promise you will see something divine. Being here means you are not looking for a shortcut. You are looking to do the work. To take a few days to figure out what is truly important. To toy with your theology and understand the world in a new way. This is not to denigrate any other spiritual practice. But I am fully aware that Judaism as we live it is just that: a practice. It takes time and patience, like we are trying to hone any other skill. May these holidays be meaningful. May the food be delicious and the company divine. And may we each find a sacred part of ourselves in the process.

We’re in Elul now, the month that leans in toward the High Holidays, and every year I find myself re-litigating the same word: teshuvah. Most people translate it as repentance, and picture something like a courtroom — an admission, a sentence, a clean slate. But the Hebrew comes from the root *shuv*, to return, and the tradition is less interested in your verdict than in your address. Repentance asks what you did wrong. Return asks where you’ve been. So here’s the question I’ve been sitting with, and the one I’d offer you this month: what’s an aspect of yourself you’d like to return to? Not a resolution — those point forward. This points backward,

toward something you already know how to be. For a lot of us, that’s less about who we were and more about who we were with. Maybe there’s a standing coffee that quietly fell off your calendar, or a study partner you haven’t texted in a while, or a minyan you keep meaning to get back to. Teshuvah has a way of being less solitary than we assume. I talked about this a bit on the podcast this month, if you want the longer version. But mostly I just wanted to plant the question early, before the holidays arrive and there’s no room left to sit with it. Wishing you a thoughtful Elul. Come say hi.

“Hey, just wanted to wish you a happy Roshmadon.” It was 2017, and I was about a year into a new job when a colleague—twenty years younger and already much more successful—wished me a happy “Roshmadon,” which is...not a thing. I politely corrected him, grinning and letting him know that the holiday was called “Rosh Hashanah,” and he sheepishly apologized for getting it wrong. I wasn’t offended. Growing up in the South, I have a long history of being and feeling different. (Those differences may have been what originally inspired me to seek a career in entertainment, but that’s another article for ETZETERA.) I wasn’t offended because the well wishes were coming from a good place. This younger colleague was supportive, kind and great to work with—yet a key part of who I was remained a complete mystery to him. As Jews in America, we are living through a challenging time, where antisemitism and misunderstandings about our identity feel more prevalent than ever. Beyond those challenges, there has also been a widespread yet simple, persistent lack of understanding about what actually makes Jews... Jews. This month, we celebrate the most important Jewish holidays of the year. On Rosh Hashanah, we mark the new year, and on Yom Kippur, we reflect on how we may have fallen short over the past twelve months. While so many beautiful cultural traditions make our people

unique, the High Holidays are the most important. During the High Holidays, we come together as one community, one congregation, worshipping together. The theme for this year’s High Holidays at TEC is “L’dor v’dor”—from generation to generation. On the surface, it’s easy to assume this is about ensuring our children and our children’s children follow in our footsteps and adhere to tradition. But it’s more than that. Without subsequent generations to observe these holy days, we risk losing the very core of our shared identity. I guess you could say the High Holidays is what makes Jews... Jews. It’s when we share the common experience of worshipping as one, as we have every year for thousands of years: celebrating our family’s traditions, anticipating a sweet new year, admitting our faults and vowing to do better and, finally, breaking the fast. For these few weeks, we are united in prayer. A week after my younger colleague’s “Roshmadon” wish, he approached me again. This time, he offered a heartfelt wish for an easy fast and a happy Yom Kippur. He had done some research, taking the time to learn the meaningful way to wish me and my family well. I thanked him - grateful for the thoughtfulness of a younger generation. L’Shana Tova to you and your family.

The High Holiday season is here—a time of both seriousness and joy. Rabbi Ed Feinstein of VBS, in a sermon titled “As the Jews Turn,” shared a teaching from Rabbi Mark Borovitz, a great teacher of teshuvah: Imagine that this year you are 51% evil and 49% good. All we ask is a 2% improvement. Just 2%. Can you find 2% more time for your family, your community, or the world? Can you give 2% more to charity? Become 2% more considerate or kinder? Grow 2% in wisdom? That is all the holiday asks of us.

invite family and friends, gather in the sukkah, and celebrate together. And then Simchat Torah, a holiday of great joy that is forever marked by what happened on October 7, 2023, which coincided with Simchat Torah that year.

I find this idea profound. Judaism does not necessarily ask for dramatic transformation. Sometimes small changes can have a profound impact on ourselves, our families, and our communities.

I look forward to the prayers, the music, the food, and the traditions that await me during this season. As I do every year, I will travel back in time to Sweden—to remember my family’s past and present, and the friends I have been so fortunate to know.

For three weeks, we embark on a spiritual journey. We begin with Rosh Hashanah, taking stock of who we are and where we want to grow. On Yom Kippur, we confront ourselves honestly and, through prayer and teshuvah, emerge with a renewed and purified soul, ready to take on the world again. Then comes Sukkot, when we are commanded to be joyful—to

We remember, we mourn, and we celebrate—all at the same time. This is what we do as Jews: we hold seemingly opposite truths together. We carry grief and joy, memory and hope, sorrow and celebration.

I wish the same for you, wherever this season may take you. May these days give us the opportunity to reflect, to remember, to reconnect, and perhaps to become just 2% better. Wishing you all a meaningful, peaceful, and joyous High Holiday season. Shanah Tovah Umetokah

The new school year is here, and we are so excited to welcome our students and families back to Religious School! The first day of Religious School for students in grades 3–7 is Tuesday, September 8, from 4:15–6:15 p.m. Students in grades TK–2 will begin on Sunday, September 20, from 9:00–11:00 a.m. There will be a parent meeting on the first day of school for each group. Parents are invited to join us in the Social Hall on September 8 and the Wolfson Auditorium on September 20. You will be able to pick up your High Holiday tickets and “Parent Tags” and learn more about the exciting year ahead. Celebrating the High Holidays Together We look forward to celebrating the High Holidays with your family and creating meaningful experiences and lasting memories. Our special programming is designed to nurture our children and help them understand and enjoy these important Holy Days. For Rosh Hashanah on Saturday, September 12, and Yom Kippur on Monday, September 21, we have designed age-appropriate programs for children in kindergarten through seventh grade. High Holiday Children’s Programming Family-Friendly High Holiday Services – Sanctuary Designed for families with children, these creative and inspirational services will take place from 8:30–9:30 a.m. No tickets are required, and everyone is welcome! High Holiday Hangout – Wolfson Auditorium Beginning at 10:00 a.m., the High Holiday Hangout will provide a relaxed and welcoming space for students in grades K–7 before High Holiday Experience and Junior Congregation. Children can enjoy games, crafts, snacks, and time together with friends. High Holiday Experience – Grades K–4 This program is designed for children who are too old for

childcare but not quite ready for Junior Congregation. Students will participate in a creative service and enjoy inspiring activities. Please bring a dairy or pareve lunch, clearly labeled with your child’s first and last name and grade. Snacks will be provided. Registration is required. High Holiday Junior Congregation – Grades 5–7 This interactive service encourages participation while helping students learn about the meaning and significance of the High Holidays. Please bring a dairy or pareve lunch, clearly labeled with your child’s first and last name and grade. Snacks will be provided. Registration is required. Neilah Service and Havdalah – Children of All Ages The Neilah service will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by Havdalah. We invite children of all ages to join us on Monday, September 21, at 7:15 p.m. sharp. Please meet in the Chapel. It is a very moving moment to see the sanctuary dimly lit as the children walk from the back of the Social Hall to the Bima, holding their light sticks. This beautiful and emotional moment is very touching for the entire congregation. Please make sure your children are registered for their High Holiday programs. Our staff spends many hours preparing for these special experiences, and registration helps us plan appropriately for every child. A flyer with additional information about each program is included in this bulletin. As we begin a new school year and are preparing to celebrate the High Holidays together, I am grateful for our wonderful TEC community. May the coming year be filled with learning, joy, connection, and meaningful moments. My husband, Leo, our children, grandchildren, and I wish everyone a Happy, Healthy, Peaceful, and Sweet New Year. The ECE had so much fun this summer! Each week was filled with exciting activities, hands-on experiences, and opportunities to learn, explore, and grow. Our children became scientists, artists, musicians, and explorers! During Science Week, Mad Science joined us for an exciting, hands-on science experience. We mixed colors, conducted experiments, and made discoveries together. We also learned from a bubbleologist, who showed us how to create different shapes and movements with bubbles. The Reptile Family brought lots of amazing animals for us to see and touch! The children had the opportunity to get up close with a variety of reptiles and other animals, creating an

unforgettable learning experience. Throughout the summer, we connected our learning to meaningful Jewish values. We learned about taking care of the earth, protecting sea creatures and our oceans, and celebrating the idea that each of us is special and unique. We sang songs in music, splashed and played in the water, explored our creativity through art, and made so many wonderful memories together. We ended our summer with a drum circle and a concert from our favorite band, The Beat Buds! It was the perfect way to celebrate a summer filled with joy, friendship, learning, and fun–filled summer we had in the ECE!

TEC Community Mark Goldstein, President, Men’s Club Hi Everyone! Hope you had an enjoyable summer. To cap the summer, in August, Men’s Club hosted a Men’s Night Out on the patio at Naughty Pine Brewery in Westlake Village and a wonderful Torah on the Trail event. Thank you to Rabbi Averbach for helping us appreciate our surroundings and Hazzan Noam for leading us in song. Please join us for our next Men’s Night Out on September 9 at 7pm at Naughty Pine in Westlake Village and a Torah on the Trail event to be scheduled in October. We look forward to a full year ahead. Sukkah Building is on Sunday, September 20 8:30 am – 12:00 pm. Come and help construct the

sukkah which will be used by the whole Temple community during Sukkot. Then partake in the Sukkah with our annual Men’s Club Scotch, Steak (or Salmon) and Torah in the Sukkah dinner event on Tuesday, September 29 at 6:30 pm. Men’s Club and WoTEC will be leading Shabbat Shuvah services September 18 and 19. We look forward to you joining us. Please sign up for parts if you haven’t done so yet. All are welcome to Men’s Club Board Meetings. The next is set for Tuesday September 15 at 7 pm. A new Men’s Club TEC Cycling Club is still forming. Events will be announced soon.
