On behalf of my dedicated clergy colleagues, Rabbi Sarah Bassin and Cantor Lizzie Weiss, Rabbi Adam Lutz and Rabbi Emerita Laura Geller, our Executive Director Matt Davidson and the entire staff, I’d like to welcome you to our programming, events, and information guide for the year. On the pages of this booklet (digital and print) you will find our offerings for this year. From the special musical guests and Shabbat services, to our classes and conversation series, Temple Emanuel will be offering the same high-quality Jewish life experiences that we have been providing over the years. Of course, this year all of our programs and services will be virtual and accessible via Zoom, Facebook Live, and YouTube as they have been since the stay-at-home order began. We are constantly monitoring the state and county guidelines to determine when we again may gather safely in person. But, in the meantime, we want every congregant to stay connected to Temple Emanuel and Jewish life. This year’s theme is an important one considering what’s happening in our world: P’tach Libi, “Open up my heart,” and comes from the prayer “Elohai N’tzor” in the siddur. The whole line is P’tach libi b’toratecha uv’mitzvotecha tirdof nafshi: “Open my heart with your Torah, let my soul pursue your mitzvot.” Over the course of the year we will explore ways in which we can open our hearts to meet the challenges of this particular time in our lives. Some of our hearts will open gently, some of us will need to break open our hearts, and still others may have to mend our hearts before we can even begin to open them. Our sermons, classes, school activities and writings will all engage in understanding what it means for all of us to open our hearts. This past year has seen so many changes in the way we interact with the world and this unique moment in history amplifies the need for an open heart, where spiritual balance and resilience helps us endure the world we live in, for now. We will open our hearts through the teachings of our tradition, caring for the stranger, the orphan and the widow, those less fortunate, those without power, and those who are being treated unjustly. We will turn our souls towards goodness through the mitzvah to take more responsibility for the welfare of others: to visit the sick, comfort the mourner, and help fellow family members in need. This is the year for us to open our hearts to change, to open our hearts to a new way to view ourselves. This year, let us discover ourselves and our world, as we open up our hearts through Jewish teachings and values and actions, to leave the world a better place than we found it.

Congregants actively participate in the service by volunteering for honors, greeting visitors, chanting the weekly Torah portions, and celebrating life-cycle events. The service culminates with a thought-provoking Torah study that begins at 11:30 am.. Kiddush lunch dependent on the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions.

Temple Emanuel's award-winning Early Childhood Center (ECC) program provides children with an enriching learning environment designed to stimulate curiosity, learning, and imagination as we introduce Jewish customs and values. Our school strives to maximize the unique potential of each child, and our innovative, developmentally-sensitive curriculum presents endless opportunities to build positive self-esteem and creativity. TEMPLE EMANUEL K-12 PROGRAMMING Kindergarten to 7th Grade
Temple Emanuel’s religious school strives to teach students the skills, knowledge, and Jewish values they need to develop into engaged, excited, and active Jewish adults. In our unique school, students explore Jewish values, Hebrew, prayers, holidays—we do it all. Our students don’t only learn about our tradition, they learn how to apply it to their lives today. Through thoughtful project-based, personalized instruction, students explore the questions they care about through year-long projects and learn how to look at the world through a Jewish lens. Our curriculum focuses on collaboration and team-building activities so that students build connections with their classmates, gain self confidence, develop critical thinking, and hone the 21st century skills they care about. 8th to 12th Grade Classes Civil Rights and Racial Justice in Los Angeles We may not be able to travel, but we can still transform the world....and ourselves. This year, rather than offer two programs with different travel destinations for our 8th-12th graders, we are meeting the moment by putting all of our efforts into a single program exploring local civil rights and racial justice issues. How can we create a world in which all voices have value—not just the ones with more historical power? How have minorities used their voices to transform society? How do we know when to use ours and when to listen? What does Jewish tradition have to teach us about the importance of minority voices? Through a combination of learning, art, and advocacy, students will better understand the past and present of civil rights in Los Angeles.
TEMTY TEMTY is a youth group for teens, led by teens. Our youth group is a safe space for our teens to socialize, relax, and talk about whatever is on their minds. Additionally, the TEMTY board is an amazing opportunity for teens to try out what it feels like to be a leader, and to build their resume!
Madrichim This weekly leadership program allows students to gain valuable experience by assisting in the classroom. In separate training sessions, students explore their roles as leaders in all the spaces they inhabit: the classroom, the home, and the wider world. 21

Strengthening Our Internal Diversity to Strengthen the Jewish Future
As America becomes more diverse, so does the Jewish community. Recent studies indicate that currently People of Color make up 12-15% of the Jewish community and that number is steadily increasing. Yet most Jewish institutions do not yet reflect this reality. We’re building a road map for Temple Emanuel as a spiritual home for Reform Jews who are diverse ethnically, culturally and religiously. Voter Postcard Campaign With OneLA-IAF, Temple Emanuel, in conjunction with Temple Isaiah and ChaiVillageLA has been partnering with the Religious Action Center and the non-partisan campaign, Reclaim Our Vote to encourage people of color to register and vote in states where voter suppression is most active. From sending postcards, to phone banking and texting through Election Day, there are many ways to get involved. OUR SOCIAL JUSTICE PARTNERS... The Esperanza Immigrants Rights Project Assisting unaccompanied children, families, and individuals striving for a better life in our community.
Temple Emanuel members support several major projects within Esperanza. Last year, the focus was on the Esperanza Baby Shower and Esperanza Emergency Fund. The successful baby shower provided twenty-one young women with needed baby supplies and training. Most of these women were themselves unaccompanied minors. The Esperanza Emergency Fund provides assistance to clients whether it be emergency food, transportation costs, clothing or other general supplies. Many of the supplies contributed during the High Holy Days go towards this fund.

Addressing Homelessness and Mental Health in the Los Angeles Area Temple Emanuel has been a member of One LA-IAF since 2004. As a multi-faith coalition of churches, synagogues, non-profits, schools, and clinics, we are committed to civic measures for justice. We do this work, building sustainable power, by listening to each other, building relationships within the institution, across institutions and with elected officials making decisions that impact our lives.

Muslim And Jewish Collaboration for International Relief Work MAJOR Fund is a global humanitarian organization. This past year, the focus has shifted slightly to immigrant and COVID relief. Major Fund hosted a Tiyya Foundation dinner, catered by Tiyya's own Flavors from Afar for recent graduates of NewGround's Professional Fellowship.
