Fanaticism in the name of religion has become a 21st century reality. How do religions that hold love as a central tenant become the conduit for violence and evil? In this class, we will explore the tension between violence and love in the sacred texts of multiple religions. We will examine the sociological factors that lead to the development of extremism. Most importantly we will discuss “how to save religion from itself.” The class will include works by Jewish experts Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, Rabbi Reuven Firestone, and Dr. Mark Jeurgensmeyer, author of Terror in the Mind of God.

But curiously, when the rabbis expound upon this in the Mishnah, patrilineal descent is responsible for the tribe to which you belong (Priest, Levite, Judean, etc). It is unclear why this change took place, although some speculate that when the people of Israel were dispersed, it was easier to verify if the mother was Jewish.

In 1983, the Reform Rabbinate, led by then President of the Reform movement, Alexander Schindler, put forth a resolution stating that when ONE parent is Jewish, whether the mother OR father, their offspring is Jewish. So in your case, since you were brought up Jewish, and identify as a Jewish person, and one of your parents was Jewish, you are Jewish. Prayer of the Month A New Year is upon us. As Jews, we are lucky to have two opportunities to celebrate new beginnings. In October we “begin again” with our celebration of the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah. In January we celebrate the secular New Year. Of course, there are traditions that have become mainstream, like rejoining the gym or starting therapy. But you might not know that Judaism always strives to acknowledge new beginnings. This month, I want to highlight a prayer called “Birkat Hachodesh,” the blessing of the new month. In ancient times when there were no clocks to show how time passed, the

rabbis recognized the importance of marking time, and so each month, they would watch for the new moon and once they were sure of its appearance, they would announce the occasion to their communities. This very practical ritual holds deep spiritual meaning. “Grant Us a long life – a life of peace, a life of goodness, a life of blessing, a life of sustenance, a life of bodily vigor, a life in which there is fear of heaven and fear of sin…. A life of prosperity and honor, a life in which there will be love of Torah and fear of heaven, a life in which will be fulfilled the wishes of our hearts for goodness."
My blessing for each of you is that you take a moment this year to recognize that time always flies, but that you have the ability to stop for a moment, recognize your blessings, and reflect upon your wishes for a new beginning. May God renew this New Year for you and your families. “A life of peace, a life of happiness and rejoicing and for deliverance and for consolation. And let us say, Amen.”
