Each year the annual Awards Banquet honors local businesses, volunteers and board members who support the Temple Chamber and help our community continue to thrive. This year’s banquet will be held on Friday, January 25, at the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center. Doors will open at 6pm with a social hour, and the dinner will begin at 7pm. Several awards are given during this event, including the Jean Garner Red Carpet Ambassador of the Year, the Small Business of the Year and Community Impact Awards. As the official representatives of the Chamber, Red Carpet Ambassadors provide a valuable service by welcoming new members, conducting ribbon cuttings and assisting with recruitment. The large and small businesses of the year will also be awarded during the ceremony. Some past winners in these categories consist include The Shoe Box in the Temple Mall and In The Mood Ballroom,
whose downtown revitalization efforts have brought new life to Main Street. The 2012 Board and Committee Chairman Dan Jones will also give his remarks on the past year and introduce Kenny McCarty as Chairman for 2013. Health & Science: a Focus of Temple & its Residents for Over 100 Years By: Elizabeth Carlton, Leadership Temple Temple, Texas is a hub of health and life sciences for Central Texas. The Temple Chamber of Commerce Leadership Temple class enjoyed a day in the medical field visiting McLane Children’s Hospital Scott & White, Scott and White Memorial Hospital, Seaton Medical Center Harker Heights, Seton Outpatient Surgery Center in Temple and King’s Daughter Clinics. A highlight of the day was hand on experi-
ence in the clinical simulation center at Scott and White Memorial Hospital with Della Austin, Director, Clinical Simulation. The simulation training uses state-of-the-art health simulator mannequins to enhance patient safety and quality care through use of clinical simulation in education and research. The mannequins are used for training medical students, nursing students, medical residents and fellows and other health-related care givers. The Leadership Temple class also visited the Seton Medical Center Harker Heights, who hosted the group for lunch and a tour of the new hospital. Matt Maxfield, CEO and Luke Potts, Physician and Business Development shared with us that the medical center is expected to bring in two thousand jobs over the next 10 years and an estimated local economic impact of almost $23 million. The full-service acute care center opened in June 2012 with more than 300 employees. The hospital features an intensive care unit, emergency room,

Bend O’ The River Receives Donation By: Katie Smith, Temple Chamber of Commerce It is common to think of the new year as a time to turn over a new leaf, but it is also a time for old attractions to receive new life. Bend O’ The River Botanic Garden is on the way to just that, spurred along with local donations such as last month’s by the Temple Chamber of Commerce. The land, gifted to the City of Temple by the Talasek family in 2011 is a historic treasure with a scenic riverfront and towering trees. Now, a variety of community leaders and organizations are working with the City in hopes
of making the property available for events that would benefit the creation of a botanic garden. One of those community leaders is Jennifer Graham with the Temple College Foundation, who last month received a thousand-dollar donation from the Temple Chamber of Commerce. With the support of the community, 2013 is expected to be a busy year of planning and development, so that soon research, education, and recreation will make the Bend O’ The River Botanic Garden the only attraction of its kind from Dallas to San Antonio. KNCT to Host 5th Annual Wine Classic in January KNCT, the local public TV and radio station and Temple Chamber member, will present a special evening of wine tasting during the fifth annual KNCT Wine Classic on January 19, 2013, at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center. The event will also feature a Wine 101 class, food and a silent auction. Participants will have the opportunity to taste and learn as more than 150 wines from local Texas vineyards as well as wines from around the world will be paired with a variety of hors d’oeuvres.
The evening starts at 5 p.m. with the Wine 101 class led by Steve Hanik, certified sommelier. The class will teach novices how to select the right wine for each meal, what to look for in taste and scent in selecting wines and other aspects of the wine-making process. Tickets for the class are $100 and include early entry into the wine tasting event. Those interested in the wine class should consider purchasing tickets early as seating is limited.
The wine tasting will be from 7 – 10 p.m. Tickets for only the tasting portion of the evening are $60. A silent auction for wines, art, wine refrigerator, wine dinners and other items will be held at the event. Guests will also have the opportunity to purchase wines from Texas Wineries outside the conference center. Women’s Chorus Invites Visitors To January Rehearsals If you have a passion for music and would like to learn more about a cappella singing, a local women’s chorus invites you to step through the rehearsal doors every Thursday night in January at 6:45 p.m. at the Cultural Activities Center, 3011 North 3rd St. in Temple. Chisholm Trail Chorus of Sweet Adelines International will introduce something new about 4-part, a cappella (also known as barbershop) singing each week: • January 3 – Techniques for getting the most out of your voice, especially if you haven’t sung in a long time.

Downtown Temple Alliance This alliance promotes the revitalizations, redevelopment and preservation of downtown Temple through its four main initiatives: historic preservation, parking, business and public outreach. Bloomin’ Temple Festival This event brings in live music, a carnival, food, arts & crafts, business booths, races and contests during a two day celebration in downtown Temple. Mark your calendars for May 10-11! Business After Hours As one of the Chamber’s most attended events, these mixers provide members the opportunity to network after work. Communications This committee writes and produces
the Focus on Business, a monthly publication distributed in the local newspaper. Red Carpet Ambassadors This committee serves as the official representatives of the Chamber in welcoming new members and conducting ribbon cuttings. Business Networking Breakfast This early-morning networking event allows for individuals to create contacts before the work day. Business Link Lunch This is the newest of the Chamber’s networking events with the opportunity to network while enjoying lunch. Golf Tournament This committee will plan, organize and coordinate the events for the day and sponsorships for the 4th Annual Golf Tournament.
