The La Plata R-II Student Council will sponsor a Red Cross Blood Drive on Monday, December 9, 2013, from 1:30 - 6:00 P.M., at the La Plata Christian Church. The goal is 37 units. The Red Cross has assured us that the problems encountered with the last drive have been remedied, and this one should go smoothly. Blood is always short this time of year, so your contribution is urgently needed. Give an early Christmas present, the gift of life.

Johnson Places 4th at FFA Competition

November 18-22 was Elementary Career Week at Macon R-1 hosted at the Macon Area Career and Technical Education Center building. Each day different grades (K-Grade 5) visited for career presentations in the programs areas. High school students from LaPlata, Atlanta, N. Shelby, S. Shelby, and Macon, Bevier, New Cambria and Cairo taught the younger students. Monday, Kindergarten students learned about Automotive Technology and Culinary Arts. Tuesday, Grade 5 learned about Early Childhood Careers and Graphic Arts. Wednesday, Grade 3 learned about Agriculture and Grade 4 learned about Business. On Thursday, Grade 2 learns about Health Occupations and Family/Consumer Science and Friday Grade First Graders learned about Building Trades and Industrial Welding.

From the Office of Representative Tim Remole - 6th District It has been a very busy summer and a fast one. It is hard to believe it is November. I have enjoyed being in the 6th district over the past few months. I count it a privilege to represent the people of the 6th district. I have been meeting with the Interim Agriculture Committee to learn more about the number one industry in Missouri. We have met all over to the state to meet with row crop, dairy & cattle farmers. An important issue within our area is dealing with the Thomas Hill Energy Center. We will be

holding an informational meeting to stop EPA rate hikes. The informational meeting will be Tuesday, December 10th at Westran High School in Huntsville. The start time will be 6 pm.

The Holiday season is upon us with Thanksgiving quickly approaching. Thanksgiving is the time to express gratitude to God for all the good things in life we are so blessed to have and to share. It is a time to acknowledge the good deeds of our fellow men and

women and be thankful to our families and our dearest friends. It is those with thankful hearts whose lives are filled with song. We should take time for kindness to those we hold most dear and extend a helping hand to others in need throughout the year. So may the blessings of this day fill you with Thanksgiving peace that lasts the whole year through! Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas!

PALS is a mentoring program that matches high school agriculture students with elementary and middle school students. The program helps students to build trust in others and develop positive selfesteem, and engage in ag literacy activities. Through the PALS program, high school, middle school and elementary students develop special, one-toone relationships, while exploring their interests in plants, animals and the world around them. We were treated to some beautiful piano music Monday morning. Ardith Simpson was here and the residents had a great time listening to some of their favorite songs. Holly and the residents played Bingo this afternoon. The grand prize winners were Dolores White, Grace Killen, and Dorothy Dee Daniel. This evening, more fantastic music was on the agenda. They shared a delicious anniversary cake with everyone in the dining room. Thank you, Frank & Martha, and congratulations! Thursday morning, the residents watched the movie “The Sound of Music”. We had forgot how much we love that movie and the music! The Friendship Design class met this afternoon. They made snowmen decorations for their rooms. Bill Lear & Friends were here this evening. They put on quite a show with incredible music. Everyone is looking forward to their next visit! Mark and Holly took Frank Mason, Frank Bowen, Doreena Young, and Norma Latimer to Windmill Ridge this afternoon. The store had lots of yummy baked goods and Christmas candy which we had to try! REMEMBERING TO OFFER THANKS FOR OUR BLESSINGS ON THANKSGIVING DAY

Our traditional Thanksgiving Day that we celebrate yearly on the fourth Thursday of November has its roots in the first Thanksgiving celebration, when there were harvest festivals and days of thanking God for plentiful crops. We are reminded of the year 1621 when the Pilgrim’s started the first Thanksgiving, which later has become a tradition for our entire nation. As a young child growing up, I was taught much about the first Thanksgiving Celebration from my Mother Azalea Belt Walker and by my first grade teacher Alice T. Llewellyn as we studied history at Anabel District #83; a one room school located in southeast Macon County near the community of Anabel. My young classmates

and I learned that it was a time of feast and thanksgiving organized in which there were dishes like boiled turkey, corn, fruits, vegetables, along with fish, which was packed in salt, and meat that was smoke cured over fires. We learned that the Pilgrims had invited their neighbors, Native American Indians, to share in the thanksgiving dinner. We learned that Governor William Bradford proclaimed a day of thanksgiving that was to be shared by all the colonists and the neighboring Native American Indians. Even now today, we still love to follow the Thanksgiving traditions of the past. The most significant Thanksgiving customs are still popular and followed by many of us today as we observe Thanksgiving Day. Most of us will gather with family and friends on Thanksgiving Day for celebrating this special day together; giving thanks for our many blessings for those things that we are truly grateful for. For many of us, that have our roots in farming and agriculture, we will also give thanks to the Almighty for the recent bountiful harvest of our crops. Many of our families will collectively offer Thanksgiving prayer to the Lord for His blessings upon us. Of course, the Thanksgiving Dinner is a custom that we continue to celebrate most with our families and friends together on this day. Eating at least one dish made of turkey is a compulsory and interesting Thanksgiving tradition. Some of us love to play and/

Community Child Development Center Receives Start Smart Grant

Community Child Development Center in Macon has received great news-CCDC has received a $350,000 grant to help expand the quickly growing early childhood facility. The grant, Missouri Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP), will allow CCDC to add a 2400 square foot addition to its existing facility for an additional preschool room and a multipurpose room also functioning as a safe room. “We have had a waiting list of 40-50 children for more than two years,” said Tricia Knowles, Director. “This grant is a unique opportunity created by the Missouri Start Smart Initiative. “ However, there is a catch to this grant. The state pays the grant in state tax credits, not in cash monies meaning CCDC is responsible for selling tax credits before they can use the money toward the renovation. Anyone in Missouri with business income is eligible to purchase tax credits. The 50 percent tax credits are good for up

to five years from the date of purchase. “Tax credits keep state monies here in Northeast Missouri, said Knowles. If you sent your taxes to Jefferson City, you don’t know what happens to them. Contributing through tax credits allows you to see what your tax dollars are doing.” This isn’t the first time CCDC has received a NAP grant. This is NAP grand number four. “Since 2005, CCDC has kept $779.590 of tax monies in Northeast Missouri.” This expansion would not only allow more physical space in CCDC, but also room for 18 more children. The safe/multipurpose room would provide a mini-gym for children during inclement weather and a safe room for storms. Knowles remarked, “CCDC appreciates all the support received in the past and is looking forward to serving the community in the future.” If you are interested in tax credits, call 660-395-0134.

Others may make plans for the following day of early Christmas shopping on what is now referred to as Black Friday. No matter how you choose to observe Thanksgiving Day; I do believe that it is important for all of us to stop and reflect upon on our blessings that day; to remember the reason that we celebrate and observe this day. Also, I believe that we should all try to resolve that we will all work together to insure that this tradition of giving thanks to God for our many blessings continues on. As for me, I will be with family and friends at my Aunt Phyllis Belt’s home in Macon enjoying a wonderful Thanksgiving Dinner, along with time for conversation, reflection and fellowship with those attending. Just prior to our Thanksgiving

Dinner we all collectively join together and form a circle holding hands, where we all offer a prayer of thanks and gratefulness for all of our individual and collective blessings. After dinner, my Aunt Phyllis will often go to her piano and we will all join in singing hymns and other songs together. It is always a great and fun time to be together in fellowship and thanksgiving with family and friends. I am grateful for the opportunity serve as your 3rd District State Representative. Jane Thompson, President welcomed guest Twila Halley, Samatha Halley and Carol Harrell. She thanked members in attendance and called the meeting to order. Sue Williams, Chaplain gave the invocation followed by the Pledge Alligance to the Flag. Bonnie Morris, Vice Pres. presented a slate of officers for 2014 - 2015. Club members voted to elect the slate as presented. Programs for next year were discussed. Rowena Young, Treasurer gave the treasury report. Next meeting will be January 9, 2014 at the Apple Basket in Macon.

THE SHEPHERD CALLS Focus on a Blessing

The sign in front of the church reads, “Do the math. Count your blessings.” That’s good advice. On some occasion, you may have been advised to make a list of all the things for which you are thankful. We even have a hymn instructing us to do so, “Count your many blessings, name them one by one”. Unfortunately we seldom sing that hymn except at Thanksgiving. For most of us, the problem with making a list would be remembering all our blessings. If you could remember them all, there would be too many to list.

GIFFORD ITEMS Deer hunters are all around Hohenadel Hill. Not much luck, maybe it is too windy and warm I guess. One careless hunter set fire in the Hidden Hallow Conservation area. Carolyn Hill of Clarence and Marilyn Sinnock spent a few days at Branson. They enjoyed seeing Roy Rogers Junior and son Dustin, the Bald Knobbers and the violist, Shoji Tabouchi. Donna and Jerry Gray attended the Atlanta Tourniment this past week. Sharron Burns attended Atalpal 2 meeting at the La Plata Expresso Restaurant Thursday afternoon. Roger Jay and Jeremy Jarman visited Roger and Mary Jarman this week. Lisa, Tyler and Tanner Leonard visited Dean Marietta Slaughter this weekend. Roger Vezkala, Brian and Zachary Gray, Todd Gray and Steve Sceimah were deer hunting at the Donna and Jerry Gray farm this week. Realizing these suggestions are impractical, a colleague encouraged his parishioners to select just one thing for which they are thankful and write it down as completely as possible. Then he continued, find an appropriate person or persons and share your penned thanks with them. The implications of such an act are many. First, it would force us to be specific. It is one thing to say, “I am thankful.” It is quite another thing to say, “I am thankful for my surgeon. He literally saved my life.” Just choosing a specific item for thanksgiving will make you more grateful.

Sharing your thankfulness with someone else will bless you and bless the persons with whom you share. The Psalmist seemed to have this idea in mind when he said, “Give thanks to the Lord . . . make known His deeds among the people”. (Psalm 105:1) Realizing preachers should practice what they preach; I have selected a blessing and written it out. I am thankful I live in a country that observes a national day of thanksgiving. I realize not everyone will spend the entire day giving thanks, but many will. Thanksgiving forces us to focus—focus on

However, our nation is not the provider. The provider is God Himself. We are “one nation under God”. A national day of thanksgiving recognizes Him as the ultimate provider, and I am thankful for that. And, there you have it. OBITUARY

William A. Tuggle William A. Tuggle, age 60 of La Plata, Missouri, passed away Monday, November 18, 2013 at Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, Missouri. Born April 20, 1953 in Kirksville, Missouri, he was the son of Billy M. and Stella M. (Pippin) Tuggle. On August 30, 1975 in Kirksville, he married Mary J. Tietsort who survives. Also surviving is his mother, Stella Tuggle of La Plata; one son, Ryan Tuggle and wife Toni of La Plata; two daughters, Cassie Robinson and husband Josh and Laura Tuggle and friend Josh Noel, all of La Plata; one brother, J.R. Tuggle and wife Molly of La Plata; two sisters, Susie Tuggle and friend Lindsey Evans and Janet Tuggle, all of La Plata; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Tuggle of La Plata and Kathy Nunez and husband Herb of West Hills, California; seven grandchildren, Kalie Lene, Madisyn, Hunter, Haylea and Ella Tuggle, Haygan and Alivia Robinson; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Billy; one brother, Tom Tuggle; and one nephew, Derek Tuggle. Willie lived all of his life in the La Plata community. He was a 1971 graduate of La Plata High School, and was employed by BNSF Railroad from 1971 to 2013. Willie enjoyed woodworking, fishing and spending time with his family. Funeral services were 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 23, 2013 at the La Plata Baptist Church. Officiating was Pastor David Gottman. Burial was in the La Plata Cemetery. Visitation was Friday November 22, 2013 and the family received friends from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Travis Funeral Chapel in La Plata, Missouri. HEARTLAND HEADLINESK. Nickerson The big news around Heartland this week is that the cross is back on top of our water tower! The tower got a new paint job this summer, and in the process, the cross was taken down so some lighting could be repaired. It hasn’t felt quite like home with that bare spot in the sky. This week a huge crane came in and lifted the cross back into its proper position. We were all stopping along the road and taking pictures like a bunch of tourists. I think that symbol represents much more to us than just a

trademark for our city. Most of us have come to Heartland to get a fresh start in life. We have literally come out of darkness into God’s marvelous light. And the cross is what drew us here. The light that shines for miles around from the top of our water tower is the emblem of our hope. I know the spiritual cross wasn’t absent from our lives while the lighted one was down. But it just feels better to have it back in place. It is easier now to find our way home.

COMMUNITY NEWS CLARENCE CHRONICLES November 21: Fifty years ago today at noon, I set up my ironing board in my living room. I got my weeks worth of ironing (back then we ironed everything) plugged in my iron and put by beautiful one-year-old son on a big quilt on the floor. I intended to watch the noon news and then watch As The World Turns while I ironed. I didn’t do any of that. I saw our President JFK killed. I was crying and my beautiful baby boy took his first steps over to me I picked him up and cried. Some for joy because he walked and some for horror that someone killed our President. I watched all day and later Larry came home and cried with me. I saw everything and I saw Lee Harvey Oswald shot on TV. Today you see all the killings on TV shows but I saw the killing that changed the world. Oh to have a strong president like JFK today. I think everyone is really busy getting ready for the Christmas season. A lot of my friends are busy putting up Christmas lights. Last week our Grandson Derek got the lights put up on the outside of the house. I now

have three Christmas Trees up and the upstairs is decorated. One of my friends told me I was her hero and I inspired her and she has two trees up now. My son Raymond always has the same question,” Why so early? It’s not Thanksgiving yet.” I always tell him that when you decorate everything in sight you have to start early. I went to a fun party last Sunday afternoon. My friend Lori Grubb had a jewelry party. It was lots of fun and we all got to play dress up with all the beautiful, necklaces, rings, bracelets, and earrings. I had so much fun that I booked a party for February. I have not picked a date yet but I will let you know and you are invited. I know everyone is into Deer Season. Derek and his friend went hunting over the week-end. I know they had a lot of fun even though they didn’t get a deer. They had a great time planning the the hunt. This afternoon Kenny and I went to visit our daughter Laura and Granddaughters Kaylee and Katherine in Callao. They are working on their new home and it is

Patty Truitt coming along nicely. It will be so beautiful when Laura and Mitch get it finished. Thanksgiving is coming and I am so excited. I have my turkey and I know the menu. Turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, dressing, corn, pumpkin and apple pies. I know who all is coming and I am ready. I have so much to be thankful for; I am healthy. I have a great husband, five wonderful children and each of them has a wonderful person to share their life with. Lots of grandchildren and great grandchildren. I have a nice home, two dogs and two cats that are part of the family. I have a good job and lots of friends. I love my church and my church family. Most of all I am thankful for a loving God and the Christmas season when we will celebrate the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ. Yes I have a lot to be thankful for and I pray all of you have a wonderful and blessed Christmas season. Till next week enjoy getting ready for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Patty

Back-to-School Health and Safety Fair Will Return! Thanks to the Athenian Club, the Macon County Back-to-School Health & Safety Fair will be held on schedule Saturday, August 2, 2014. The location will change to the Macon United Methodist Church, 208 Pearl Street. Jane Hunter & Jenn Gordan, two of the original members of the Back-to-School Fair Planning Committee, are pleased to announce this transition to the Athenian Club. I would like to say Happy Thanksgiving to everyone and take a moment to reflect on the many, many things we have to be thankful for this year. The community would like to extend its deepest sympathy to the family of Willie Tuggle. The community would like to send out prayers on behalf of John Malusky, husband of Sheryl Lene Malusky who suffer a stroke and is in the hospital in Houston, Texas. Zach Kimbrough of Moberly spent the first weekend of deer season with his grandparents, Dean and Pam Burris. He had a big buck in view

and then the wind shifted and off it went. He’s hoping for better luck the last weekend. He did help his grandma with a computer problem before going back to college. Shawn and Jennipher Burris spent November 9-16 in Venezuela at Samuel’s House on a mission trip. They had a very productive week building and playing with the children. Shawn drove straight to Elmer to hunt when he got back to Moberly. Shawn got a doe on Sunday afternoon. Sunday night Asher Kimbrough of Moberly came to his grandparents to deer hunt. He works weekends and Monday he bagged a 7

point buck and Tuesdayhe got a doe. Grandma enjoys having her boys around to spoil them. Grandpa not as certain because he gets to work up the deer and get up early to make his famous blueberry waffles. Dean and Pam Burris attended the Walsworth Annual Banquet on Sunday at Marceline. Ron Watson of Atlanta was a caller in the Burris home on Tuesday night. ELMER BAPTIST CHURCH NEWS Billy Pippin will be the guest speaker on Sunday, December 1, 2013.

American Legion Posts Honor Ethel Soldier

November 19, 2013, 21 Legionnaires from the American Legion Bucklin Green Hills Post 57, Ethel Memorial Post 247, and Callao/New Cambria Argonne Memorial Post 360 performed Military Rites for Raymond A. Gall of Ethel, Missouri at the New Boston Cemetery. Gall was a veteran of the United States Army, a farmer and an area resident all his life. The three Legion Posts jointly folded and presented the flag to the Gall family, sounded taps and performed a three round rifle volley. The Patriot Guard provided a flag line and motorcycle escort for the funeral entourage.

They had been deer hunting. Travis Palmer of Warrensburg spent the weekend deer hunting at his grandparents, Wayne and Elizabeth Beeson. Mae Graham and Rhoda Graham went to LaPlata and Kirksville on business and shopping on Monday.

Deloma Nuhn Biography-100 Years

NOTICE Deloma Maxine Pippin Nuhn was born on November 19, 1913, near Callao, Missouri. Her parents were Robert and Relda (Rector) Pippin. She was the fourth child of six children. Her siblings’ names were John, Lester, Deona, George, and Ethel Ann. She grew up around the Callao/Bevier/Chariton River area. On July 2, 1934, she married Loren Dale Nuhn in Bevier, Missouri. After their wedding, they moved to Wyoming where they would visit Loren’s father, Roy Nuhn, who was surveying in Wyoming. From there they went to Alzada, Montana and ran a gas station for a short time. The gas station had very few customers. Deloma said they would go a whole month without a visitor. They then moved to Belle Fouch, South Dakota. Loren had an uncle there that needed help on his sheep ranch. Their first son, Dale Armon, was born while they were living there. Deloma talked about riding a horse to the mailbox because it was seventeen miles from the house. She also said that the mail only ran three days a week. After this time, Loren began working for the government and they were sent to Ohio. The government then sent him to Macon, Georgia

to work at Warner-Robbins Air Force Base. While they were living in Georgia, their second son, Robert Jerry, was born. They remained in Georgia for several years. In 1956, after Loren retired, they moved back to Atlanta, Missouri. Loren served on the police force in both Macon and Atlanta. Deloma worked in Theo Gooding’s grocery store in Atlanta for about two years. In approximately 1960, she then went to work at Banquet Foods in Macon. She worked on the food line for around five years. In the mid 1960’s, Deloma began working at Loch Haven. She worked in the Dietary Department first. Then she helped in the Activities Department. Shirley Bernhardt was the Activities Director at that time. Deloma also worked with Delores Dunseith and Lucille Long in the Activities Department. She enjoyed the people she worked with, and also enjoyed making crafts with the residents. She retired from Loch Haven in November of 1985. Over the years, Deloma has enjoyed making quilts. Her favorite quilt to make is the Cathedral Window. She had made several quilts over the years to give to family and friends.

TOPS MO877 La Plata met Tuesday November 19 in the La Plata Christian Church Fellowship Hall with 6 members weighing in. Gail led the meeting. We opened with our TOPS and KOPS pledges. Roll call was “Did you lose or gain?”

Best TOPS loser was Janet with Bobbi as runner-up. KOPS Barbara G. stayed in leeway. Our Thanksgiving contest led by Donnie Joyce is in it’s third week. This week’s bonus point is to clean a closet. Barbara G led the group in this week’s “Smart Goal”

There is an interesting history behind South 63 Cafe’. It was originally built as a home by AJ Noll for his wife. Over the years it was lived in by RL Smead, and Gary & Betty Pillars. The building was then owned by Dorothy and JD Wilcox. Their daughter, Oniska Wilcox, ran it as a restaurant called Miner’s Diner. The restaurant then became Barb & Sherry’s and in 2004 Marshell Turner opened South 63 Cafe’. The menu consists of home-cooked meals including real hamburgers, hand-breaded tenderloins, hot sandwiches, the famous “3B” burger, and awesome homemade pies!
