CHELSEA ANTIQUES
CREATIVE DECOR
Richard Kelly holds up an old coin pierced with a bullet hole. âA sharp shooter tossed this into the air and shot it.â he explained. The history and paperwork provided with the coin are out-shadowed by the sheer impossibility of this feat. Kelly, who owns the store with his wife Patricia, returns to the coin counterâan array of history told through money. âNot only do we sell coins and currency,â he adds, âwe also buy gold, silver, coins, jewelry, and antique furniture.â Coins are not the only thing one can find at CHELSEA ANTIQUES. Vintage signs adorn the walls, a scoop of vintage buttons charm the visitor, and the vast selection of vintage jewelry makes for a unique gift or a one-of-a-kind adornment for a wedding or other special occasion. This is a place for everyone. âThe thing we hear most is that people didnât realize the extent of what we have in the store,â said Patricia Kelly. Chelsea antiques offers an eclectic mix for any antique enthusiast. With thousands of items under one roof, there is something for everyone. âWe have primitives, shabby chic, linens, Victorian, small collectibles, tins, fishing lures and much, much more.â

âWhen I find something old in an attic, Iâm thinking about who touched it last or who wore it and what conversations were had over it. It thrills me to death,â said Norm Sauer, owner of Sauer Furniture and Antiques, located in Monroe near the banks of beautiful Lake Erie. Sauer, who is known as âMonroeâs Own Picker,â has been operating out of the same location for more than 50 years and offers 20,000 square feet of showroom reflecting both his experience and his never-ending excitement for seeking out new inventory. Sauer has a knack for keeping up with current antique decorating trends as well as a knack for finding items of unique and historical impact. Local history buffs revel in items relating to General Custer, Monroe Auto Equipment, La-Z-Boy, and Ford. Others delight in the wide array of antiques, Victorian trinkets, signs, tools, furniture, architectural items, Indian artifacts, and war memorabilia dating back to the Spanish-American War. It is a shop of treasures waiting to be discovered and taken home. âI donât care if youâre male or female, eight or 80, something in here will attract your interest,â said Sauer. âThereâs a little bit of everything for everyone.â

ANTIQUE APPEAL No matter how many times you walk into TECUMSEH ANTIQUE APPEAL, new treasures await â an intricate piece of old furniture, a beautiful broach with the patina of age, or a tool, worn smooth by the grip of long ago work. The store has a following. Loyal customers return again and again from as near as Tecumseh and Livonia and from as far as Indiana and Tennessee. They come back for the friendly and knowledgeable staff. They come back for the great prices. They come back for the clean, bright, and organized atmosphere. âWhatâs the secret of our success?â asks owner Juli Jones. âWe have over 30 dealers. There is something here for every style. Our customers come back again and again knowing that there will be something new each time they return. You can come back every day, and it is never the same store.â As Jones is talking, she watches her employee open the door and help a customer inside from a sudden downpour. âThatâs actually the real secret,â smiles Jones, nodding toward her employee. âOur staff and dealers are amazing. They can answer your questions. They will remember your name and what items you love. They are the ones who make this store.â

MONROE NEWS PHOTO BY TOM HAWLEY
Maybe itâs the repurposed junk, or the smiling moose head, or maybe itâs the pretty jewelry. Or maybe itâs the inability to label and define IDK Creative that makes the shop so magical. Maybe true authenticity canât quite be defined, itâs more of a feeling. âIâm not sure I fit in a category. All I know is how to be me,â answered owner Lisa Czubko when asked to define her style. IDK is more than a shop, it is an experience. Small rooms display beautiful and quirky and unusual pieces ranging from creative furniture to her husbandâs custom-made farmhouse tables to smaller pieces to jewelry. âThe jewelry is like the frosting,â said Czubko with a smile. âShould you take life seriously?â asked Czubko as she motioned to her shop. âNo. Should you take yourself seriously? No. Should you have a sense of humor? Yes. I think environment controls mood. When we are surrounded by whimsy and creative it sets a backdrop for fun. I want people to come in and enjoy their time here, have fun, and be inspired. I want to surprise them and make them laugh.â
