through its popularity with the global industry but also by addressing the current challenges of our era and especially of its sector, first and foremost in regard to “plastics for sustainable development” and the “circular economy”. These not only will be among the hot topics touched on at the exhibitors’ stands at the upcoming K but will also be covered comprehensively in the supporting programme. For example, the special exhibition “Plastics Shape the Future” also sees itself as a podium for solutions and answers to current social trends and discussions. The world’s fastest offset printer for bottle caps The next K show edition will be an opportunity to present an important innovation in the range of printing systems produced by MOSS

he Reggio Emilia-based company, with over 50 years’ experience in the printing machines industry, currently devoted to the manufacturing of 4.0 technology equipment, will reveal a brand new version of the MO 2062, the flagship model of automatic machines for plastic cap decoration, with up to 300,000 effective PCO28 caps per hour in the top configuration. The MO 2062 model remains the fastest offset machine for caps in the world and it can be equipped with 4 colors, plus a special pre-print color unit suitable for background color printing. These peculiar characteristics have ensured that the world’s leading plastic caps manufacturers included this model in their production processes. Thanks to the 10-year collaboration with a worldleading manufacturer of compression molding machines for plastic caps, the MO 2062 exhibited

at K will feature a quality control produced by the Imola-based group, directly integrated into the printing machine. Unlike the configuration available so far, which requires adding a buffering turntable, a jet-stream conveyor and the quality control system itself, the new version allows to limit the overall dimensions, while preserving the output and reliability characteristics. Another reason to visit MOSS at K will be the possibility to see a machine via remote connection that will be in the pre-testing stage at the Reggio Emilia factory. The mentioned line will be dedicated to flexible tubes decoration and it will consist of a multipurpose machine MP8 equipped for tube lacquering connected to a 5-color servo-assisted screen-printer MS 1070. The line will feature two capping units for screw-on and snap-on caps with print orientation, pin accumulator, lacquerdrying UV oven and decoration UV-LED dryers.

fter the excellent results of the past edition, the PLASTInternational Exhibition for Plastics and Rubber Industries organizing secretariat announces the next three-year appointment for the event, which will take place from Tuesday, 4 May to Friday, 7 May 2021 at the Fiera Milano RhoPero fairgrounds, again together with The Innovation Alliance. “The broad approval expressed by exhibitors and visitors alike for the formula piloted in 2018,” stated Alessandro Grassi, President of AMAPLAST and of the management company PROMAPLAST srl, organizer of PLAST, “has more than convinced us to renew the agreement with the organizing committees of the other four fairs taking part in the innovative tradeshow format (IPACK-IMA, MEAT-TECH, PRINT4ALL, INTRALOGISTICA ITALIA).” PLAST 2018 closed its doors on a positive trend, with over 1,500 exhibitors in 55,000 square metres of exhibition space drawing in more than 63,000 visitors. There was also a significant increase

in foreign representation, partly thanks to over 30 official delegations welcomed to the specialized fair, which thus reaffirms its international stature and draw. There was a rich showcase of technology presented to the operators, especially as regards the core of the exhibition: machinery, equipment and moulds for processing plastics and rubber, with over 3,500 units on display in the 6 exhibition halls. This is an important sector in Italian manufacturing, with a production value estimated by the trade association AMAPLAST at 4.7 billion euros in 2018, approximately 70% going to exports. Russia’s economy is picking up Marked uptick in the propensity to invest at interplastica and upakovka 2019

trong interest taken in the accompanying expert forums The Russian market seems to be finally moving out of the trough at least as regards the plastics, rubber and packaging sectors and related process industries. Impressive proof of this has been provided by the two trade fairs interplastica, 22nd International Trade Fair for Plastics and Rubber, and upakovka – Processing and Packaging, which drew to a successful close after four trade fair days on 1 February 2019. To the tune of 25,000 visitors came to the AO Expocenter in Krasnaja Presnja, Moscow to seek information on the extensive ranges displayed by 950 exhibitors from 32 countries. After a period of stagnation in 2016 and a -2.8 % recession in 2015, Russia saw a new growth phase start in 2017 with 1.5 % GNP growth. Four years after the sanctions were imposed and the oil price dropped the Russian economy has adapted to the new circumstances and managed to grow again. There is a great deal of renewed interest in modern machinery, production plants and high-tech materials. This also especially applies to demand for packaging technologies and plastic processing

equipment. To the delight of the exhibiting companies, activities at interplastica und upakovka were therefore not only confined to an exchange of information. Many trade visitors also came with concrete intentions to buy and took their purchasing decisions right on site. This underpins the substantial investment needs that continue to exist in Russia and its neighbouring states. The presence of numerous foreign exhibitors evidences the sustained strong interest taken in the Russian market. “Following some difficult years things are picking up again. Those showing stamina will now be rewarded,” reflects Werner Matthias Dornscheidt, CEO and President of Messe Düsseldorf, drawing a positive conclusion. Very satisfied with the results of the two trade fairs, he goes on to say: “The mood in the halls was excellent, exhibitors reported extremely interested business people who were also prepared to place orders. They capitalised on the unique opportunity here to see the latest developments in world markets and negotiate with suppliers on site.” In 2017 (for want of more recent figures) plastics and rubber machines worth EUR 457 million were exported to Russia from all over the world; this means 40.4% more than in 2016 (325.5 million). From January to September 2018 plastics and rubber machinery exports from Germany totalled EUR 90.8 million – a 3.3% plus against the same period of the previous year. Commenting on this Thorsten Kühmann, General Manager at the Fachverband Kunststoff- und Gummimaschinen (the Plastics and Rubber Machinery Association within the VDMA), said: “Following a marked rise in German deliveries

to Russia in 2017, these levels were maintained and had even raised slightly by November 2018. As before there are clear impulses for the packaging sector as a direct upshot of the Russian food sanctions. As a result, packaging must increasingly be produced in Russia to preserve regional foodstuffs. Add to this the positive effect companies with local branches can feel as their stamina is increasingly rewarded. It is true that the Russian market has not been able to follow on from the successful years around 2013 yet but it offers compensation in volatile times.” Austria and China were represented with strong joint pavilions at interplastica 2019 while Germany promoted the quality seal “Made in Germany” with a large, official German participation. Furthermore, Italy attended with its usual strong participation. 65 Italian exhibitors at individual stands and at the big country pavilion in Hall 2.3 provided a comprehensive overview. Fabrizio Vanzan, Exhibition Manager at AMAPLAST, summed it up as follows: “interplastica 2019 proved very positive for us and even exceeded our expectations against the backdrop of the known, difficult economic situation. Our Italian exhibitors welcomed many existing customers but also new customers from Russia and its neighbouring countries to their stands. We expect very good follow-up business.” “Two topics also generating particular interest at interplastica 2019 were Industry 4.0 and Recycling,” says Natallia Esche, Team Assistant at VDMA AG Hybride Leichtbau Technologien. In terms of recycling Esche refers to the internationally still very different development status: “The problem of waste disposal is a very acute one

Whereas in many Western European countries this problem is already being actively solved with the introduction of entire processing complexes, Russia currently only has a few, small plants.” The ranges displayed by interplastica exhibitors were complemented by a programme of high-calibre technical events. At the Polymer Plaza in Hall 1 expert lectures and panel discussions addressing such current issues as “Plastics and the Circular Economy – Recycling Trends and Rising Environmental Conscience”, “Innovative Trends in the Modern Polymer Industry”, or “Biopolymers and Recycling” made for packed rows in the audience. Also proving a key attraction for visitors was the third edition of the special show 3D fab+print. The strong growth areas of Additive Manufacturing and 3D printing were centre stage. Here Russian and international experts discussed developments, opportunities and challenges of this young technology while exhibitors showcased their innovative products and solutions within this theme. After drawing the pieces, the male holder bar is turned and placed again on the electrical translation device from and to the press. The global cycle time will be defined by the press according to the injection, vulcanization and frame exchange time.

In the run-up to K 2019, The World´s No. 1 Trade Fair Plastics and Rubber, which will take place in Düsseldorf from 16 to 23 October 2019, we will first take a look at the Asian economy, broken down into various areas, in order to then identify the plastics industry, market growth and challenges in the region

ith the world economies on a roller coaster ride, sluggish trade growth is expected on the heels of further trade restrictions and policy uncertainties. According to the OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development), the global economy is likely to expand from 3.3% in 2019 to 3.4% in 2020, down from the 3.5% it had projected for both years last year. Meanwhile, in China, while new policy measures have offset weak trade developments, OECD’s forecast for the country remains close to 2018, with a forecast growth of 6.2% in 2019 from 6.3%. And while India’s growth wound down to 7.1% in the third quarter of 2018, it is expected to grow at 7.3% in the fiscal year 2018-19, and 7.5% in the following two years, says the World Bank. Bracing for further headwinds in the months to come, mature economies are pointing their compasses towards Southeast Asian countries, even against the Bank of America Merrill Lynch forecast of a slowdown in five countries – Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand – with growth falling slightly to 4.8% in 2019, from 5% in 2018. As a single market, Southeast Asia is very attractive for key industries,

including automotive, packaging, construction and medical devices. The region is also embracing salient issues relating to fuel efficiency, through development of its electric vehicle industry; plastics waste reduction through a recycling infrastructure; and adoption of smart manufacturing via Industry 4.0 initiatives. Southeast Asia’s plastics market is expected to register a CAGR of 5.5% from 2018-2023, according to a report by Mordor Intelligence. Construction and packaging industries are the major consumers of plastics in the region, as are film/sheet applications. Meanwhile, Mordor Intelligence also says that the market for engineering plastics in Asia-Pacific was 25.37 million tonnes in 2017. The market is expected to portray a healthy growth rate over the forecast period of 2018-2023, at a CAGR of 5.7%. PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) resins are expected to dominate the segment, with a 51% share in the engineering plastics’ product share and a growth of 6.6% over the next five years. Flaunting its automotive base assets To remain competitive, Southeast Asia needs to measure up with the global automotive demand. The region produced over 4 million vehicles in 2018, and averaged a 7.6% growth in production and sales, from January-November 2018, according to the ASEAN Automotive Federation (AAF). Thailand the region’s largest producer of vehicles (commercial and passenger vehicles), takes the lead, having produced 2.16 million units in 2018, up by 9% from the previous year. For 2018, full year vehicle sales in Thailand increased 19.2% yearon-year to 1 million units. However, the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) forecasts that vehicle production in Thailand is expected to decrease slightly to 2.15 million units in 2019. The country, dubbed as the Detroit of Asia, remains a manufacturing haven for global automobile makers including Toyota, Ford, Honda, BMW, Mercedes and more, which have set up factories in Thailand. Second in rank in production is Indonesia, which produced over 1.24 million units, up 9.9% from 1.13 million units a year ago, according to the AAF data. Southeast Asia: a wild card in the global plastics industry

2018, having sold 1.06 million units in the 11 months to November, up 6.9% from 994,436 units over the same period a year ago. Meanwhile car producing Malaysia, saw a 23.7% dip in sales following three months of a windfall from JuneAugust; and capped the month of November 2018 with a sales growth of 5.5%, according to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA). Plugging into electric vehicles or EVs Sales of electric cars are increasing around the world, surpassing 1.2 million for the first time in 2018, and more than 1.6 million EVs expected to be sold worldwide by the end of the year, according to the Frost & Sullivan Global Electric Vehicle Market Outlook for 2018. While China, the US and Europe account for around 90% of all electric car

sales in the world, Japan and South Korea are also major players, with China cornering half of global production in 2017, followed by Europe and the US with 21%, and 17%, respectively; and Japan and South Korea representing 8% and 3%, respectively. Southeast Asia, where vehicle, industrial and biomass burning are main reasons for degrading air quality, is also progressing towards low carbon transport. A 2018 study by Frost & Sullivan and Nissan, covering Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and the Philippines, says though EV uptake remains comparatively low, consumers are aware of the di¬fferences in various EV technologies such as battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid

vehicles (PHEVs) and full hybrid. It also said EVs are gaining popularity among young individuals below the age of 40. When British technology firm Dyson picked Singapore as the location for its multi-billion dollar electric car project, to roll out its first EVs by 2021, it came as a surprise since almost 90% of vehicles are petrol-based in Singapore. According to the Land Transport Authority (LTA), as of last year, 357 cars were petrol-electric plug-ins while 466 were pure electric, of the 614,937 cars registered in Singapore. Nevertheless, the country is one of a few in the world with both an electric car-sharing scheme and an electric taxi fleet and it is also expected that 60 electric buses will ply public bus routes by 2020, according to the LTA. Elsewhere, the “Big 3” – Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia, have formed respective EV roadmaps to build an integrated EV ecosystem to support private investments across the value chain. Under its “Electric Vehicle Promotion Plan”, part of the Thailand Alternative Energy Development Plan 2012-2021, Thailand has progressed from having 60,000 hybrid passenger cars and 8,000 battery electric motorcycles in 2014 to 102,000 hybrid cars and 1,400 battery electric vehicles in 2018, according to the Land Transport Department. Indonesia has delved deeper into the issue of adoption, pushing its goal for 20% of all locally manufactured cars to be electric by 2025. It is targeting 2.1 million units of two-wheeler EVs like e-motorcycles and and 2,200 units of four-wheeler vehicles by 2025. Investments are rife and recent developments include South Korea’s Hyundai setting up a 250,000-unit/ year EV plant in Cikarang Industrial Complex; and a consortium of investors from South Korea, Japan and China building a US$4 billion EV battery plant in Morowali to tap into Indonesia’s abundant nickel laterite reserves, a key ingredient in lithium ion batteries. The country is also finalising a policy that offers fiscal incentives to EV battery producers and car makers, as well as tariff agreements with countries that have high EV demand. Under its National Green Technology Master Plan and the Electric Mobility Blueprint (EMB), Malaysia envisages by 2030, it will have 100,000 electric cars on the road, along with 2,000 electric buses and 125,000 charging stations, says the Malaysian Investment Development Authority. In the Philippines, the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP) set a target in 2014 to have

1 million EVs on roads by 2020, while the Philippine Department of Energy (DOE) collaborated with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to introduce e-tricycles (e-trikes) powered by lithium-ion battery technology. As of 2018, around 1,400 e-jeepneys and e-trikes ply the roads, according to the Department of Trade and Industry’s Board of Investments, along with charging stations in 19 locations. EVAP envisions 200 of these in place by 2022. In predominantly two-wheeler Vietnam, its first car manufacturer Vinfast expects to produce 250,000 e-motorcycles/year and is planning to release its own electric car in the near future. Still, the region has to tackle the slow take-up rate of EVs due to unattractive incentives, higher prices of EVs, compared to petrol engine equivalents, and lack of availability of charging infrastructure, with the Frost & Sullivan findings indicating that governments have a critical role to play in promoting EV usage. Top scorers in packaging The Asian flexible packaging market is poised to reach a CAGR of 5.7% to US$6.7 billion from 20162024, according to a Transparency Market Research sector forecast,

driven by growth and increasing disposable incomes. Thailand, touted as the “Kitchen of the World” for drawing importance on its food and agriculture sectors, has one of Asia’s most advanced food processing segment, with more than 10,000 food-and-beverage processing factories. Its third largest sector, it accounts for over 20% of the country’s GDP. The Thai packaging industry is expected to grow to 63.1 trillion units in 2020 from 51.3 trillion units in 2017, registering a CAGR of 4.2%, says Global Data research. Packaging that offers greater functionality such as onthe-go, sustainable or personalised packs are forecast to rake in higher demand in the longer term, as is rigid plastics with the highest market share gainer and growth of 4.5% during 2017-2022. Indonesia is, likewise, predicted to lead in the flexible packaging market in the region, with food packaging accounting for 70% of plastic consumption, according to Transparency Market Research. Food and beverage sales are among key drivers to Indonesia’s strong retail sales growth averaging 3.7% year-on-year based on the December 2018 data of Bank Indonesia. This backs the growth of the Indonesian plastics market, forecast to witness a CAGR of 6.23% in a Mordor Intelligence report spanning 2018-2023. The emerging trend of busy, fastpaced lifestyles in Indonesia’s flourishing urbanisation is driving the demand for smaller, convenient, onthe-go packs, and other packaging types, according to Global Data, which also alludes to rising

environment awareness among consumers as a key factor in thriving demand for eco-friendly packaging formats. Flexible packaging holds a broad usage in Indonesia’s food industry, owing to its low cost, flexibility to suit multiple shapes and sizes, convenience, and low-carbon foot print. Flexible packaging occupied a market share of 42% in 2016, accounting for 42 billion units in 2016, and is forecast to reach 52 billion units in 2021, at a CAGR of 4.3% during 2016-2021. Nevertheless, rigid packaging snapped up a sizeable market share in Indonesia in 2016, accounting for nearly 25% of the market, and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.7% by 2021. With over 1,500 plastic production companies, Malaysia’s plastics market is driven by packaging. Citing data from Statista, Malaysia’s food and beverage segment is predicted to earn US$268 million in 2019; and is expected to grow annually at a CAGR of 18% to US$520 million by 2023. In the same trajectory, the pharmaceutical industry is propelling the growth of packaging. Looming waste problem – going full circle for sustainability The booming plastics and packaging sectors in Southeast Asia have resulted in a growing waste problem. According to the Ocean Conservancy environmental advocacy group, and based on the findings of the Science journal, more than half of plastics that end up in the oceans come from five countries – China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. Meanwhile, with China’s ban on the import of most global recyclable plastics last year, to develop its own domestic recycling capacity, Southeast Asia has become a dumping ground for plastic waste from other countries. And while Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia have started to enforce import bans on plastic waste, further legislation is required to stem the tide, since illegal plastics recycling factories rise up even with the enforcement. As the second largest contributor to the plastic waste crisis in the oceans, trailing only behind China, Indonesia has a monumental task to tackle. The 250 million-populated country used 9.8 billion plastic bags in 2016 alone, according to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. Against a failed plastic bag tax on single-use bags, which would have had an “impact on small and medium enterprises”, according to Indonesian Olefin, Aromatic and Plastic Industry Association (Inaplas), the country has now pledged US$1 billion, including a US$100 million loan from the World Bank. EXHIBITIONS to reduce the amount of plastic it leaks into the oceans by 70% by 2025, according to the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs, through product packaging redesign, use of recyclable materials, and adequate waste management. Of the latter, the country has a “sizeable” recycling industry, with about 1.1 million tonnes/year of plastic waste recycled, yet the recycling rate remains low at 20%, says the newly formed Indonesia Plastics Recyclers (IPR). With Thailand producing around 3 million tonnes/year of plastic waste, the country has established a 20-year strategy, which includes banning the use of thin single-use plastic bags by 2022, followed by single-use plastic cups and straws in 2025, according to plans drafted by the Pollution Control Department. Neighbouring country Malaysia has charted a zero-waste plan that aims to abolish single-use plastics by 2030. With incineration high on its agenda, Singapore has held off on introducing policies that either ban or tax single-use plastic, to the chagrin of environmentalists since even Cambodia has introduced a levy on plastic bags in shopping centres and supermarkets. In the Philippines, a ban on single-use plastic also came into effect in government offices, with plastic utensils, bags and straws banned. Local governments have also enforced zero-plastic policies in their cities. Conclusions and outlook for the Southeast Asian plastics industry As Southeast Asia moves on a trajectory path, in its plastics sector growth, sustainability in the industry cannot be achieved without altering the current systems of plastics management and consumption. Already, the five Asian countries of Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia collectively produce 8.9 million tonnes/year of mismanaged plastic waste. Addressing the environmental impact of handling waste buildup through plastic bag bans, and similar tax-based actions, which are predominantly the first line of defence for many countries to manage waste, may no longer be as efficient as anticipated. Today, a more expansive approach is sought to incorporate design and enable technologies to maximise the value of materials. Bringing into the fold is the circular economy model that aims to curb wastage through reuse of materials as well as recyclability of materials in major sectors (automotive, construction, packaging and others). Meanwhile, targets have been set in the newly formed sustainable

framework led by Malaysia-based NGO, Circular Economy Asia (CEA), to consolidate efforts for Asia to tackle its waste leading to a circular economy. CEA’s model includes providing a regular, convenient and efficient collection service, support of informal recycling collectors and utilising the tiers they operate within because it is a system that already works well; as well as licensing informal recycling collectors for technologyconnected geographical areas, providing the information and data for a range of key solutions. CEA is also lauding the Asian Plastics & Packaging Agreement (APPA), a programme that seeks to establish a common recycling labelling system, a certifiable supply chain and advocates each country in Asia to establish a sustainable, circular plastics and packaging industry.

Finally, CEA says that if policy makers embrace the circular economy now, it is expected to come full circle for Asia in 2050, through the elimination of landfilling with the diversion of recyclable resources for reprocessing and with the production of 100% of recyclable plastics. At K 2019, both raw material producers and mechanical engineers want to make their experience and knowledge of recycling, sustainable development and circular economy with plastics available internationally. Against this background in particular, the “Circular Economy” will be at the centre of K 2019, which as the leading global trade fair for the sector offers optimum conditions for deepening discussions on this important topic with experts from many countries around the world and for intensifying cooperation.

Eurasia’s leading plastics industry fair Plast Eurasia Istanbul counts down for its 29th edition

Versatility and power EXACT to launch its new E-120, a compact extruder that will meet demands for edge trim recovery at high speed

EXACT has chosen 2019 K-Show as a stage for the presentation of its latest model of extruder: EXACT E-120. What are the ramifications of the present situation for the plastics industry, and what options does recycling offer today?

lastic waste desecrating beaches and rivers or oozing out of the ruptured belly of a dead fish – at the moment, these disturbing images seem to be ubiquitous. Consequently, the image of plastics has never been as negative as it is today, and discussions regarding the use of plastics have rarely been so emotionally charged. However, the fact is that, with perhaps the exception of a few indigenous peoples, not one of the 7.5 billion inhabitants of this planet could live a normal life without plastic, regardless of whether they are conscious of this or not. After all, plastics have for some considerable time now been used in more applications than toys, household appliances and packaging. Plastics also provide important – indeed almost

essential – solutions to problems in the transportation and electronics industries and the medical sector. The plastics industry is defending itself against accusations, but it must present concepts for the future and demonstrate that plastic and environmental protection are compatible. Issues such as waste collection systems and collection rates, recovery methods, recycling and the circular economy are now more centre stage than ever before. Unsurprising, therefore, that the circular economy is one of the leading issues at this year’s international K 2019 trade fair. Visitors to this event will be greeted by a variety of proposals and solutions relating to this “green” topic. The industry has achieved much in recent years, as demonstrated in several examples. The demand for plastics continues to rise – despite, it would seem, their poor image. In its report “Plastics – The Facts”, Plastics Europe pointed out that the production of plastics worldwide was 348 million tonnes in 2017, around 4% higher than in 2016. In Europe, the output of the 28 EU countries plus Norway and Switzerland rose from 60 to 64.4 million tonnes (up 7%). Europe accounts for around a fifth of global production, placing it second among producers, after China (29%) and just ahead of the NAFTA region (18%). Although a degree of consolidation has led to a reduction in the number of companies in the European plastics industry to around 60,000 since the last K event, figures for those employed in the sector have increased, with 1.5 million working in the plastics industry and generating stable sales of about EUR 350bn in 2017. Almost 40% of plastics produced, indeed the largest proportion, is sourced by the packaging industry where it provides important protection during transportation and ensures the shelf life of goods, making a substantial contribution to environmental protection in the process. Recycling: an essential measure for the circular economy

of products and services. Plastics mainly reduce the consumption of resources in the usage phase, a fact which, according to BLV GmbH (Frankfurt), is frequently overlooked when the question of resource conservation arises solely in relation to the handling of waste. This is also the case when it comes to the second most important customer for plastics: the construction industry. This sector consumes almost 20% of all plastics. The automotive industry uses around 10% of output, achieving the highest level of growth in a comparison of 2016 and 2017. The advantageous of plastics are particularly evident in the car, given their lightness and adaptability in a variety of applications. Their impact on the reduction of the carbon footprint is decisive. Marine pollution A look at different consumer sectors clearly indicates that the usage duration for plastic products differs greatly, and this in turn influences recycling rates and options. However, as Plastics Europe has established in its study, the appreciation that plastics are much too valuable to simply discard them at the end of their service life, has grown in Europe. Recycling of plastic waste increased by almost 80% in the ten years between

2006 and 2016. At 40.9%, plastic packaging now accounts for the majority of recycling, followed by energetic recovery at 38.8%.The compulsion to act that is born of the public perception of plastic waste has contributed to a range of new laws governing higher recycling rates. Following China’s lead, other Southeast Asian countries (and Taiwan in December 2018) have imposed import restrictions on plastic waste. Landfill bans on plastic waste are already in force in ten European countries. Following its prohibition of plastic bags on 1 January 2019, Italy also imposed a ban on cotton buds made of plastic. Legislation with similar rules has been drafted and should become law throughout the EU in 2021. Criticism is also directed at other disposable plastic items such as cutlery, plates, drinking straws, stirrers and balloon sticks. Together with fishing gear, these account for 70% of the 8 million tonnes of plastic that end up in the oceans every year. The EU Commission has proposed requiring that these objects be manufactured from environmentally friendlier, more perishable materials in future. Disposable beverage cups made of plastic should only be permitted if the lid and seal are permanently attached components. RPC TedecoGizeh, the only British manufacturer of vending machine cups, has adopted one solution for the recycling of plastic cups. Together with BPI Recycling, its affiliated company, it offers all operators of drinks machines a collection service, recycling the cups recovered to manufacture new products. One exemplary initiative deserving of mention is STOP (Stop Ocean Plastics). Launched by Borealis AG and SYSTEMIQ in conjunction with the Norwegian government, Nova Chemicals, Borouge and Veolia, STOP has now gained a new strategic partner – namely Nestle, the world’s

largest food company. The common goal here is to make a pioneering contribution to the prevention of marine pollution in Southeast Asia. Nestle has also pledged to ensure that all its packaging is recyclable or reusable by 2025. Numerous recycling concepts are already in operation PET bottles are the perfect example of packaging items that are perfectly recyclable, mainly on a bottle-tobottle basis and not infrequently to a rate of 100%. The proportion of PET bottles recycled in Europe in 2017 totalled 58.2% percent. This said, striking differences are evident between countries. Whereas recycling rates of up to 95% are recorded in Germany and Finland, a study conducted by PETcore indicates that some Mediterranean countries struggle to achieve 40%. Vöslauer, the Austrian mineral water producer, switched to 100% R-PET bottles at the beginning of 2019 for all its water varieties, and this was extended to its flavoured range in April. Vöslauer itself reports that it has even succeeded in reducing material consumption by around one quarter when compared to other R-PET bottles. Coca-Cola has also been very active for years now in efforts to offer customers more sustainable bottle variants. The corporation is now taking further steps with regard to chemical recycling of PET packaging which is then used to manufacturer new bottles. A PET upcycling plant is currently being established in the Netherlands in cooperation with the Dutch start-up Ioniqa Technologies in Eindhoven. Effective collection and recovery systems have also existed for some time now for PVC window profiles, and the volumes involved here have increased from year to year. Within the Rewindo recycling initiative, an amalgamation of leading German plastic profile manufacturers succeeded in 2015

in processing over 27,000 tonnes of recycled material from old windows, roller blinds and doors and refeeding it back into the production process. In conjunction with waste from the plastic profile cutting required for tolerance production of new plastic windows, over 100,000 tonnes of recovered PVC found its way back onto the market. Rewindo says that this saves resources and energy and contributes to a reduction in the carbon footprint. There are, of course, numerous other functional recycling systems (e.g. for PE bottle crates) which cannot all be mentioned here, but it can generally be said that the purer a recovered plastic is, the better it can be reprocessed for new products. Genuine cases of production waste have been practically eliminated. This is either returned directly to the current production process, or forwarded to specialised processing companies. One of these is Hoffmann + Voss GmbH in Viersen/Germany. It specialises in the treatment of engineering plastic waste, refining it to produce high-quality recompounds which are used in the automotive industry in place of new materials. Reprocessing is always more difficult where mixed plastic waste is involved, but even here functional concepts already exist, as evident in Hahn Kunststoffe GmbH in Hahn/Germany. Every year, around 50,000 tonnes of waste from the mixed fraction are given a new lease of life in the form of railings, noise barriers, posts, bollards, flower boxes, waste containers and playground or municipal furnishings. Although these recovery concepts are effective and interesting in themselves, the question does arise as to the practicality of processing all residual plastics, or whether it would be better to use those which are difficult to recover as fuel to replace fossil resources in incineration plants.

EXHIBITIONS Recycling raw materials as an alternative The issue of recycling raw materials and the recovery of unmixed initial monomers has garnered greater attention recently, with more and more companies launching research and development projects, such as Coca- Cola which exploits chemical recycling of PET packaging. Sabic, the chemical corporation, recently announced that, in conjunction with Plastic Energy, the British specialists in London, it would be establishing a plant in the Netherlands which would process commercial volumes of mixed plastic waste to produce oil which, in turn, would then be used as a raw material for new plastics. Starting material recovered in this manner conserves fossil resources and is a good example of a functioning circular economy. However, nascent projects of this kind need time to take root. Circular concepts already exist in which newly filled, coloured or specific additive compounds are created from plastic waste and can be used by plastics processors to manufacture new substitutes for many products. Minimal or absolutely no adjustments need be made for the use of so-called recompounds, as manufacturers of injection moulding and extrusion plants continually emphasise. The importance of these efforts is demonstrated in the latest investments made by major raw material manufacturers. For example, 2016 saw the takeover of mtm plastics GmbH in Niedergebra by Borealis. The former has a plant capacity of 30,000 tonnes per annum and manufactures recycled polyolefins from mixed plastic waste. Together with the processing firm Suez, LyondellBasell took control of QCP B.V. in Geleen/Netherlands last year, a company whose stateof-the-art processing plant has a current capacity 35,000 tonnes per annum and manufactures PE and PP recompounds from postconsumer packaging. 2018 also saw the purchase by Albis of Wipag GmbH, the recycler and closed loop process specialist from Neuburg. Having specialised in the automotive sector for decades, Wipag has now even developed a process for recovering the robust material CFRP and enabling its reuse. Recycling is not only a designated product category at K 2019, but is also discussed in the K Specials, as is the entire field of Circular Economy. The special show “Plastics shape the Future” aims to involve both politicians and socially relevant groups, while the “Science Campus” of K 2019 stands for the dialogue between science and business.

Preferential heating uses a differentiated/dedicated temperature profile, allowing the preform to expand in a controlled manner and take the specific shape of the mould. Preferential heating enables to: - Have a better material distribution; in particular it allows to obtain uniform thicknesses on complex containers (i.e. asymmetric, non-cylindrical); - Eliminate zones with an excessive thickness; - Facilitate the labelling; - Optimize the weight of a particularly complex container. Therefore, preferential heating is suitable to the production of containers for detergents, cleaners, cosmetics, pharmaceutical products, sauces, condiments and some alcoholic beverages with the ratio of the long and short side exceeding 2. AirMaster air recovery system Double-stage system for the recovery of high pressure compressed air mounted as a standard equipment in all EBS K models (this allows to reduce by about 50% HP air consumption compared to the standard machine)

value, from the residence time to the temperature, maintaining optimum operating conditions even as hourly production and initial temperature and humidity conditions of the plastic granulate vary. The innovations that this new generation machine brings include more intuitive control and improved self-regulation. Significant improvements have also been made to the AIPC (Automatic Injection Pressure Control) technology that ensures the lowest production cost for each preform, not in terms of energy savings alone, but in terms of optimisation of the entire preform production process, with increased end product quality and reduction of rejects. Regarding solutions for PET, at the Düsseldorf exhibition, visitors will be able to check out the new user-friendly range of instruments for analysing preform quality. These devices enable the most important parameters, such as the acetaldehyde level in preforms, to be measured in a simple and intuitive manner. Accurate dosing Also Fdm, the Group company based in Troisdorf (Germany) specialising in the production of advanced solutions for extrusion applications, will showcase new dosing technologies at K 2019, with the GDS 5, the new gravimetric blender of the GDS line optimised to enable mounting up to 5 granulate stations, while still maintaining compact dimensions and featuring a Siemens PLC system. Handing of materials with Penta and Piovan Penta, the Group company that designs and produces large systems for storing, conveying and dosing materials in powder or chips, will present the latest innovations in the production of pipes and cables for managing additives in the compounding sector. At the exhibition, visitors will be able to see Vakupulse, a system that will be in operation to show the conveying of materials in the dense phase, which is particularly suitable for conveying delicate raw materials at low speeds and flow rates over short distances. Particularly remarkable is undoubtedly the new RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tagging system which checks that the match between sources and destinations is correct. If an error occurs, the conveying system does not activate the loading cycle, thus avoiding any risk of contamination between different materials. A system of LEDs, which can also be duplicated on a dedicated display, guides the operator. The LEDs changes colour as the conveying pipes are coupled, enabling active connections to be checked at a glance. Ready for medical applications At the exhibition, Piovan will present important innovations also in the medical sector: a new microdosing unit will be on display for the first time. This unit is able to feed the machines even with only one granule at a time, whilst maintaining very high accuracy to meet requests that come mainly above all from highly technical sectors such as the medical sector and precision micromoulding. The medical range is also complemented by machines suitable for usage in clean rooms, such as the Pureflo filterless receiver, which requires neither compressed air nor maintenance, and the emission-free DPA dryer. Cooling solutions Aquatech, the Group company dedicated to industrial cooling and temperature control technologies, will be in the limelight with many product innovations on display in a dedicated area: from temperature control units to new adiabatic dry coolers. The Easytherm range of temperature control units, the mould temperature control units that won the IF Design Award 2019, will be completed with the new pressurised temperature controls that will complement the line of atmospheric temperature controllers. There are also interesting innovations related to the DigitempEvo water-cooled thermochillers that ensure high performance whilst keeping energy consumption levels very low. Special focus also on the Easycool+ line of chillers: this range of extremely compact chillers has been conceived, designed and engineered to meet the specific cooling requirements of plastics industrial processes with unrivalled efficiency. The annual show held this year at the China Import & Export Fair Complex, Pazhou, in Southern China –– attracted 3,622 exhibitors and 163,314 professional visitors from all over the world. were overseas visitors from over 150 countries and regions. The top 15 countries, in terms of visitors, were Brazil, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Thailand, Turkey, Vietnam, and the United States. Currently, the world’s economic growth, including international trade, has been slowing down. The escalation of the Sino-US trade dispute, coupled with deterioration in trading conditions, has severely impacted global supply chains. Consequently, Chinese and foreign companies have been exercising increased caution in investments. This combination of complicated internal and external factors has served to depress economic growth. “Under the gloom of such a downturn, there was a gap between the number of visitors to CHINAPLAS 2019 and our previously set goal; we achieved a 5.19% increase compared to the last Guangzhou edition of show two years ago, ” said Ada Leung, General

Plastics, meanwhile, owing to their versatility, continue to increasingly penetrate into many downstream application industries such as electrical and electronics, automotive, packaging, building materials, medical, sports, and leisure. In the fair’s machinery exhibition area, digital smart manufacturing solutions showcased the implementation of various intelligent manufacturing options, while exhibitors also introduced a large number of highperformance, high-precision advanced equipment and a wealth of advanced molding processes. Visitors also got to see cost-effective, high-quality, small-batch, diversified production processes, in-mold decorating techniques, as well as polyurethane (PU) in-mold coating and flexible manufacturing technologies, multilayer injection molding and co-extrusion technologies, and automated all-in-one machines, among other high-end sophisticated technologies. “Going green” is now a core plank in the mission of most companies. The unstoppable trend of the circular economy was apparent at the show, as an abundance of high-performance, environmentally friendly and

recyclable solutions were on display. The theme zones that focused on the circular economy –– namely, the “Recycled Plastics Zone”, the “Recycling Technology Zone” and the “Bioplastics Zone” –– proved hugely popular with visitors.Concurrent events were plentiful as well. “Industry 4.0 Factory of the Future”, “Tech Talk”, “Design x Innovation”, “Medical Plastics Connect”, and the “Plastics Recycling & Circular Economy Conference and Showcase” all drew large crowds and featured a vigorous exchange of ideas while nourishing collaboration between various sectors. Strong praise from exhibitors & visitors alike During the four days at this plastics and rubber extravaganza, exhibitors and visitors learned from one another about new materials and techniques to enhance the competitiveness of their products in the market. up to 250 mm, and of the VENUS COAT series for the coating of PE or metal pipes with protective or functional layers. ZEPHYR is the most performing extruder manufactured by Tecnomatic, it features an array of advanced technical solutions which makes it ideal and suitable for pipe producers looking for even more focused energy saving machines, offering extreme output performance at lower melt temperatures. The innovation spans the entire extruder and includes new spiral grooved bush, screw and motors. Pipe extrusion is highly dependent on electricity and most of the energy usage is in operating the extruder itself. The Zephyr series has been designed by focusing on this as a priority, in fact the extruders of this line feature increased screw length and AC water-cooled motors, to ensure same output of bigger size extruders but with a better energy efficiency. The new feed bush ensures minor friction, commonly generated by raw material transport, with subsequent increasing of the specific and total throughput. The further development in screw design, with optimization and enhancement of torque and shearing elements, have improved the output but have also led to process the material at lower melt temperatures. development, with respect to the growing improvement of material properties, single-layer pipes are not always able to fulfil the necessary requirements. Tecnomatic has well interpreted these customer needs and has developed, on the basis of the VENUS concept, a full range of die-heads for the production of 2, 3 or 4 layers polyolefin pipes even in big size. The VENUS MULTI pipe heads have implemented important technological features in order to reach the best pipes processing and to fit a wide range of materials at very high output. The spiral geometry has been especially optimized for the latest generation of PE and PP raw materials, while length, volume and pressure have been reduced. The heart of the VENUS MULTI consists of an innovative flow channels geometry, which has been calculated by considering the current raw material. This geometry assures the same behaviour for pressure and distribution of the melt, in every pipe head of the range, also at very high output rate. The new feeding system of the spiral channels, as well as for the matching ranges and the small die sets contributes to reduce the working pressure. This influences remarkably energy consumption during extrusion taking into account that approximately 5 to 10% of the extruder power is necessary for the pumping capacity. Lower pressure also results in a lower increase of the melt temperature and with lower residence times assuring improved pipe’s characteristics with regard to OIT (oxidation resistance) values, extra weight and thermal and shear stresses reduction. Coated pipes The inherent flexibility of polyethylene has enabled a wide range of techniques, including thrust boring, directional drilling and pipe bursting,

to be used to install polyethylene pipe systems. Multilayer pipe systems have been developed with the specific objectives of improving the protection of the pressure pipes during such installations and to maximize the quality of the pipe system. This pipe, with a peelable outer skin, has provided significant economic and environmental benefits in water distribution pipelines and it is currently being tested and introduced into the Gas distribution networks. The jacket is made of a specially modified polypropylene material, which protects the surface of the inner pipe against potential notches and cracks generally associated with demanding installation methods such as pipe bursting or wash-boring. Even extremely deep notches in the protective jacket will not be transferred to the inner pipe when it is eventually exposed to servicerelated stresses. The core pipe is instead made from PE resins. The dimensions of the core pipe match those of standard solid wall PE pipes. “Adhered” to the outer wall of the PE core pipe there is a tough skin, which is typically 0.6 to 0.7 mm thick for all current dimensions of this new multilayered pipes. The “skin” is added by a cross-head positioned before the last cooling bath. To fulfill the needs of coated pipes production with protective layers, Tecnomatic has developed a full range of die-heads, based on spiral or radial technology suitable for both plastic or metal pipes coating with range from 5 to 800 mm, and solutions up to 4 layers. The die-heads are based on a typical spiral technology for large and single layer co-extrusion, while combined solutions with radial distributors or short path spiral are offered according to material characteristics or volume as for PA, EVOH, PVDF or adhesive bonds.

he Fakuma international trade fair for plastics processing is an acknowledged industry and technology barometer where innovations covering all aspects of injection moulding are concerned, as well as associated issues such as materials, machines, periphery, processes and simulation. Fakuma continues to expand upon its leading position. 1933 exhibitors from 40 countries travelled to Friedrichshafen in 2018 to participate at Fakuma, and nearly 48,000 expert visitors from 126 countries attended the industry highlight on Lake Constance. The first NOVA e130T on stand fitted with a 40 mm barrier screw will run a mould, made by MOLMASA (Barcelona, Spain), to produce Roll On. This moulding solution for the packaging industry is a new patented method for producing high quality plastic blown bottles directly from the injection moulding machine. The benefits of this application are a compact mould concept operation simple and reliable, horizontal injection moulding machine used, simple and fast start-up, high quality of the final product and a low cost of the moulded pieces production. The second NOVA eT is a 220-tonne model that produces glass thanks to a four-impression mould made by FB Moulds and it is completed

by a bagging machine. Parts are extracted via a side entry SYTRAMA Robot and placed into the bagging line. This is an ideal application in which traditional machines struggle in terms of energy consumption and performance. The fourth machine will be a 330 ton machine that produces a broom brush incorporating our FMC technology. FMC is a technique of moulding with gas (nitrogen in microcellular form) which reduces the weight of the product and eliminates aesthetic defects. The use of WPC (wood plastic compound) raw material in addition to FMC system guarantees an ecological solution for plastic production. This is equivalent to producing up to 17 million additional preforms per year. The application of MMM integrates the dryer into a “responsive” system as required by the 4.0 intelligent factory project. MMM measures the initial moisture of the granule and based on this, knowing the precise behaviour of each material, it performs the appropriate drying cycle to obtain the result requested by the customer in terms of final moisture, which is then monitored at the hoppers outlet. In this way, MMM maximizes process performance and achieves incredible results in terms of energy savings. At K 2019 Moretto proposes a series of solutions dedicated to “micro” conveying for the feeding and conveying of small quantities of technical materials. Very compact feeders, ideal for installation on stand-alone machines, on drying and dosing systems or directly on the throat of the processing machine. These conveying systems, like all of the Moretto range, include models specifically indicated for the use in clean rooms. To automatically manage and supervise the entire conveying process of small or large quantities of plastic material, ONE WIRE 3 guarantees the greatest transport efficiency, thanks to its advanced FIFO logic. KRUISEKONTROL, an exclusive Moretto patent, which the European Patent Office (EPO) recognized as “the only automatic and intelligent system in the world capable of defining the best transport conditions for each plastic material”. The uniqueness of this system lies in its ability to manage the speed of the material during the conveying phases, eliminating the peaks and the consequent formation of angel hair and wear of the pipes and adapt in a responsive way the transport conditions, differently from the various inverter systems that simply act on the air speed, but without taking into account the numerous variables that characterize each material (KK controls more than 15 parameters) and which constitute elements of strong differentiation in their behaviour in the pipe. The DGM Gravix is the dosing unit that, thanks to its particular control with exclusive Vibration Immunity System and the double eyelid system, doses with precision up to 0.01% even when installed on a blow moulding machine, without being affected by the continuous movements and vibrations to which it is subjected. The DGM Gravix dosing units cover dosing requirements for granule, powder and flakes materials, with dedicated applications, up to 12 materials and 12,000 kg/h. Applications dedicated to micro dosing, such as Rotopulse, make these machines extremely flexible in their use in the department. DPK is a compact precise lossin-weight dosing system, suitable for the dosing of small amounts of masterbatch or additives. The technology of the load cells and the control algorithm make DPK reaching dosing accuracy of up to ±0.03%. The masterbatch or additive to be dosed is contained in a hopper built in a specific transparent resistant acrylic material, free from electrostatic charges, which makes immediately visible the content material and the level of load and avoids the stop of material on the hopper walls. The hopper is easily removable without the use of tools and, together with the intelligent storage and recognition system of the masterbatches alongside the machine, the recipe change is even more immediate. Moreover, Moretto offers a complete range of thermo and cooling systems to satisfy any production requirement, from single unit on the side of the machine, to ad hoc developed modular open centralized systems with a maniacal attention to total energy efficiency.

At the K fair, LAWER show in Booth E08 - Hall 10 their own innovative powder weighing systems for preparation of blends, compounds and recipes, developed from the extensive experience gained with their customers in the rubber & plastic industry. SUPERSINCRO Multiple weighing system for powder products The modular system can be suited from 10 to 60 stainless steel storage silos of 200/300 l. capacity. Each product, received in bags or big-bag, is loaded into its own silos by gravity or pneumatically. The silos are equipped with VSF dosing devices coupled to a dedicated weighing scale. The containers handling system provides a step-by-step positioning of the bags below the silos. Supersincro allows to produce indicatively from 40 to 120 preparations/hour, delivering products weighed into bags of two different capacities automatically supplied, cut and vacuum sealed from a tubular roll of plastic film (EVA). Identification data is printed on the bag ant the end of each preparation.

UNICA HD / SUPERCOLOR Sequential weighing systems for powder products & pigments The two modular systems allow the automatic dosing of powder products of different types (i.e. ingredients, pigments, etc.). UNICA HD, for powder ingredients, can be equipped with 12/24/36 storage silos of 50 liters, loaded by gravity; SUPERCOLOR for powder pigments and products, can host from 10 to 150 silos of 150/300 liters, loaded for pneumatic vacuum. In both systems one or two weighing trolleys slide under the silos, positioning in sequence the collecting vessel, suited of a pre-formed plastic bag. Indicatively, depending on the model, the systems can produce from 6 to 20 preparations/hr. A device provides for automatic loading and unloading of buckets. The systems, available as an option also in ATEX version, are managed by PC and dedicated software and complete with an effective dust extraction and abatement unit to guarantee hygiene and safety in the working environment.

Or it is better to say - the record to the power of three: the largest exhibition space ever, the largest number of exhibitors and visitors. From 28 to 31 May the 7 Targi Kielce exhibition halls were the showcase for 910 exhibitors (2018 - 812) from 42 countries (2018 - 39).Over 17 500 square meters of the exhibition space were the display for the industry leaders from 4 continents who presented their offer. The fourday event attracted 19.760 businessinsiders and professionals. Foreign entrepreneurs account for more than 50 per cent of exhibitors, this year they represented: England, Austria, Belgium, Belarus, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, France, Georgia, the Netherlands, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Qatar, South Korea, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland, Sweden, Thailand, Taiwan, Turkey, Ukraine, the USA, Uzbekistan, Hungary and Italy. Following the manyyear tradition, the PlasticsEurope Foundation presented the latest industry data for 2018 - the Targi Kielce expo was the arena to present the latest data. It was clearly demonstrated that the plastics processors’ demand has increased both in Poland and in Europe. - According to estimates, Poland’s 3.6 million tons demonstrates over 7% increase, while it is only 0.3% increase in Europe - said the managing director Kazimierz Borkowski during the conference which was open to the general public - (...) International clusters focus on recycling Targi Kielce International Fair of Plastics and Rubber Processing PLASTPOL 2019 was the meeting platform for waste management clusters from Poland, Hungary and Slovakia. On the second market day, 29 May there was the conference - the Cluster Business Forum organised the project: “Internationalization of the Waste Management and Recycling Cluster through the Cluster’s partners and introduction of new eco-products into foreign markets.” The meeting

encompassed the limits of recycling in circular economy and the increased the role of entities which introduce plastics into the market and their financial responsibility for the system. The need to improve selective collection of secondary raw materials were also discussed. PLATINUM PLAST 2019 Gala and the great winners The PLATINUM PLAST gala ceremony has accompanied the PLASTPOL for years - this is when Targi Kielce Medals and distinctions in the product category are awarded. The jury panel also appreciated the unique exhibition presentations. In 2019 as many as four Targi Kielce Medals were presented to exhibitors from Germany.The two products awards in the four categories went to Polish entrepreneurs. The gala was also the occasion to present the Waste Management and Recycling Cluster certificates for eco-products presented within the scope of the PLASTPOL trade fair.
