Letter from Our Board President
By Mike Ehrenberg
December 31, 2025
Dear friends,
Service on Temple’s board is extremely fulfilling. For me, one of the extra benefits is more time with our amazing clergy. Every interaction is an opportunity to learn. Let me start this note with some transliterated Hebrew that I just learned from Rabbi Weiner by wishing everyone a Shana Tovah Hiloni (Happy Secular New Year!). I hope that 2026 brings peace, health and happiness for our entire TDHS community.
As we enter 2026, we are – as always – grateful for the amazing generosity of our Temple community. In this Tidings, we specifically celebrate three areas where that generosity is helping us deliver better experiences today and tomorrow:
• Thank you for your incredible support of our just completed Annual Campaign. Exceeding our goals, these donations help us deliver the programs and services that make TDHS special. I’d like to recognize Temple’s Board for their leadership in the campaign: we reached 100% Board participation this year!
• We are featuring a transformational gift to the Jennifer Rosen Meade Preschool that will help us attract, develop and retain the best possible staff for JRM. I am also excited to share that this same gift is enabling us to completely transform the JRM Playground in Bellevue and that we’ve kicked off that construction. Stay tuned for an exciting new space for our kids!
MIKE EHRENBERG BOARD PRESIDENT
• Our Capital Campaign continues to excel – not only in the generous pledges we’ve received, but through donors accelerating payment of those pledges. That acceleration has dramatically reduced Temple’s need to borrow to finance the construction, making more funds available to expand the renovation and create a reserve to take care of our facilities for the long term. Please mark the weekend of May 1st on your calendars for the reopening and our celebration of Rabbi Weiner’s 25 years as our Senior Rabbi – much more on that in future newsletters.
Again, on behalf of Temple, thank you to all of our supporters for all the ways that you donate to Temple’s present and future, and here’s hoping that everyone has a peaceful, healthy and happy 2026. S hana Tovah Hiloni.
Mike Ehrenberg President, Board of Trustees
Rabbi’s Corner
By Rabbi Daniel Weiner, Senior Rabbi
In January at the Annual Convention of the Pacific Association of Reform Rabbis (PARR), I was installed as President. I am the 70th holder of that office for an organization founded by Rabbi Levine in 1946. We celebrated PARR’s 80th Anniversary and the serendipity of its history spanning rabbis from Temple De Hirsch Sinai. At the ceremony inaugurating my tenure, I shared the following words. They spoke as much to that moment as they do to my broader perspective on my 25 years at Temple and our renewed Seattle campus, which will provide an engaging and inspiring foundation for the next generations.
We are all quite familiar with the verse from the Talmud about what a father owes a son—something we’ve expanded to encompass parents and children more broadly. Tractate Kiddushin teaches that a father must circumcise and redeem his son, teach him Torah, teach him a trade, and, some would say, teach him to swim.
Apart from the critical aquatic skills that needed to be shared at home before the advent of JCCs, the rabbis clearly understood that Jewish parenting required providing the foundation for all that a child would need: a community bound by faith, an education rooted in a moral system, and the ability to be materially self-sufficient.
I am blessed that my parents provided me with these gifts. And when I think about my father, Marty— alav hashalom—particularly at this moment in my life and here at PARR, I know that this passage affirmed his hopes and dreams for his children—and for me more
specifically as a colleague, a mentee, and a son.
My rabbinate has shared many elements with that of my father’s, and some that have been distinct. Music has been integral in my role and my personal spirituality, and Marty couldn’t carry a tune to save his life. He saw the realm of public policy as central to his leadership and the extension of Jewish values, and I’ve pursued that responsibility more situationally. And my father cherished his involvement and leadership in the CCAR (Central Conference of American Rabbis) and PARR, among many organizations—mentoring and serving the needs of colleagues and seminary students. I, on the other hand, have far less patience sitting through the endless committee and board meetings that are required if one wants to ascend the ranks of professional associations.
But PARR possessed qualities that always seemed different, special, and dare I say, kadosh
Yes, colleagues from around the country appreciated that our region chose Palm Springs as the winter destination for our retreat. But there was a secret sauce to PARR and the community it spawned that created a sense of camaraderie, support, and care that felt even more palpable than larger national gatherings.
Even as a kid, growing up watching my parents attend, they always looked forward to this post–New Year’s ritual and returned home often tanned but always refreshed and revitalized. I’m sure the programs and networking were valuable, but it was the chance to reconnect with old friends and classmates that meant the most to them. As rabbis, the boundaries between true friendship and amiability with congregants are often limiting and lonely. The chance to spend time and to process with real rabbinic friends who “get it” was deeply meaningful and comforting. And so, when offered the chance to follow in my father’s footsteps as
President of PARR, I embraced it as an opportunity: to expand the scope of my rabbinate—even as I enter the swan-song years of my tenure—and to experience something that was important to him. Perhaps it’s a small but significant way to bring a bit of his presence and spirit into my life.
We rabbis have faced unprecedented challenges over the last five years—some of which Jewish leaders haven’t had to negotiate in the modern era. I hope that the program I helped to create for this conference addressed these trials with substance and provided some inspiration for what awaits us in the coming years. But I pray that the true power and purpose of these few last days emerged from our shared experience as servant leaders whose sacrifice, struggle, and faith are as singular as they are sacred.
Last week’s parasha saw Jacob at the end of his life seeking a meeting with Joseph. After asking for a commitment to take his bones out of Egypt, Jacob blesses Efraim and Manasseh and, in essence, adopts them as sons rather than grandsons. Scholars may teach us that this has more to do with later tribal politics and territory. But I see something else that is very personal to me.
In the last few weeks, my son Ben was accepted to the rabbinic program of Hebrew Union College. It was a path both surprising but also very much characteristic of him. There are few, if any, direct three generations of Reform rabbis. I so wish my father were here to celebrate this very special moment in
Ben’s and my life. But my wife Cindy shares some comfort in that: as he lay close to death but was still lucid, she told him that, while not certain, Ben seemed to be on that course. Even the possibility that he knew brings me great pride and solace.
But in so many ways, like the generations spanning Jacob to Efraim and Manasseh, Marty is as much a father to Ben as to me, in that he provided the foundation, the model, and the inspiration for both of us to use our gifts and our opportunities to embrace a life path that is as gratifying as it is impactful, as challenging as it is affirming, and as replete with personal fulfillment as it is with dedication to public service.
And the blessing (shown below) that Jacob gave to Joseph, Efraim, and Manasseh—often called Hamalach Hagoel Oti—captures the essence of this continuity of the generations.
In this moment, I feel the power of my place as a link in the shalshelet ha-kaballah—linking my father and my son. I am blessed among you, my colleagues, to receive this honor that fills me with poignant memories of Marty, fervent hopes for Ben, and love for our tradition, our people, and for PARR. I wish all of us chazak v’ematz as we stand among the generations in a momentous time.
And he blessed Joseph, saying, “The God in whose ways my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, The God who has been my shepherd from my birth to the day—
The Messenger who has redeemed me from all harm—Bless the lads. In them may my name be recalled, And the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac, And may they be teeming multitudes upon the earth.”

Mazel Tov to Benjamin Weiner on His Rabbinic School Acceptance
We are proud to share that Benjamin Weiner has been accepted into the Rabbinic Program of the Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute of Religion. Ben’s family—Daniel, Cindy, and Julia—are overjoyed at the decision Ben has made to commit himself to our people and our tradition. And in so many ways, the TDHS community in which he came of age can also feel abiding pride in having provided a nurturing foundation for his chosen vocation.

From Repetition to Renewal: A Journey of Joy
By Jessica Fenton
About a year ago, I changed my morning alarm to Sonny and Cher’s “I’ve Got You Babe.” It was the song that woke up Bill Murray in the movie Groundhog Day. His character, Phil Connors, relived the same day over and over, a day that began with that song. I figured it was appropriate since I felt like I was living the same day over and over as well.
After my father passed away 2.5 years ago, my mother moved in with me, and I became her full-time caregiver. While I welcomed spending so much quality time with her, I discovered that caring for a loved one who has cognitive impairment was overwhelming. I was already the full-time caregiver for my three children, and I immediately became a member of the “sandwich generation.” I soon realized that I needed support, and I
discovered Elderwise and Nefesh L’Nefesh. Elderwise is a local nonprofit whose stated mission is to enrich the lives of caregivers and adults living with dementia through teaching and demonstrating the Elderwise philosophy and practice of Spirit-Centered Care. They offer weekday sessions from 10 am to 2 pm. Family caregivers can drop off their loved ones, giving them a respite from care while the participant engages in meaningful programming. I signed my mom up for the weekly session held at the TDHS Bellevue Campus, and we went to check it out. Little did I know it was exactly what both my mom and I needed.

The participants at Elderwise engage in group discussion, paint, join in sing-alongs, and practice gentle chair exercises. Lunch is also included. I cannot

put into words how warm, encouraging, and welcoming the staff are. Moreover, the volunteers who help with the program are always smiling and engaging, many of them Temple members. If I didn’t need the break from caregiving, this is absolutely something I would volunteer for as well! More importantly, Elderwise has given my mother a new lease on life with cognitive challenges. She looks forward to seeing the other Elderwise participants; she loves painting and showing off her artwork every week; she enthusiastically sings classic songs and tunes; and she has found a place to thrive without needing me. I have gotten to know my mother in a new light, and we are both deriving joy from it.
When my mother first attended Elderwise, it gave me a chance to seek out a support system for myself. I contacted Terry Brashem, who spearheads Temple’s Nefesh L’Nefesh group. The group supports people caring for loved ones who are experiencing cognitive decline by organizing holiday celebrations, providing educational opportunities, and holding monthly spousal support groups. Terry and I are working to launch another group to serve non-spousal caregivers like me. It truly helps to know that you are not alone, and I hope to help others in similar situations.
No longer am I living in my Groundhog Day. It is a new day filled with hope and joy, and I have Temple
to thank for that. I guess I need to change my morning alarm song!

From Chanukah to Tu BiShvat: Seasonal Joy in Our Classrooms
By Jessie Cunningham, Director of Jennifer Rosen Meade Preschool
We hope your Chanukah was filled with light, joy, and meaningful family moments! As the glow of the menorah fades, our preschool classrooms continue to shine with warmth and creativity. The children have been sharing stories of their holiday celebrations and exploring the beautiful themes of light, kindness, and community that carry us through the winter season.
In the weeks ahead, our little learners will dive into engaging winter activities—painting snowy scenes, experimenting with ice and water in sensory play, and discovering the wonders of nature during this time of year. We’ll also continue weaving Jewish values into our daily experiences, focusing on gratitude, caring for others, and finding joy in simple acts of kindness.
Upcoming: We are excited to celebrate Tu BiShvat, the “New Year of the Trees,” at the end of January. In our classrooms, we’ll explore the beauty of nature and the importance of caring for our world. The children
will enjoy hands-on activities like planting parsley seeds, tasting fruits from Israel, and learning how trees help our planet. Tu BiShvat is a wonderful opportunity to connect Jewish values with environmental awareness, and we can’t wait to share this special holiday with your children!
Mark Your Calendars for Community Tot Shabbat!
We are excited to invite you and your families to join JRM Preschool for Community Tot Shabbat every Friday at 9:30 a.m. This special service is designed for our youngest members and their families—a joyful, musical, and interactive way to welcome Shabbat together. Bringing Judaism Alive: Experiences at Bridge Family Religion School
By Stacey Delcau, Director of Education
If you take a walk around Bridge Family Religion School on a Sunday morning, you will experience something different and dynamic in each classroom. You won’t see kids sitting around a table in silence with the teacher reading a textbook. This is not your parents’ version of Sunday school!
You will find 2nd graders standing around a table, creating a spaghetti tower to represent the Tower of Babel. You will find a group of middle schoolers debating the balance between candor and kindness when telling a friend something difficult. You will find a group of 5th graders standing in line to be asked health and education questions in a mock Ellis Island Jewish immigration simulation. You will find a class of kindergarteners building a diorama of the creation story.
You will find our Tiyulim 7th grade program on weekly field trips off campus, finding Jewish connections to places like the Seattle Zoo, the MoPop, and historic Jewish Seattle locations. You will find our 11th/12th

Music and sounds of Hebrew fill the hallways and gathering spaces. And our teen madrichim (teaching assistants) create fun community-building games and add the coolness factor!
In writing this list, it’s overwhelming to think about the things we don’t even have space to share! Our education and teaching teams bring Judaism alive and help our students build strong Jewish identities where our students feel connected to Temple, to each other, and to Judaism!

Discovering Israel
Reflections from Temple High Schoolers on the Alexander Muss Program
Spending a semester in Israel is an unforgettable experience, full of history, culture, and personal discovery. Two high school students recently shared their experiences on the Alexander Muss High School in Israel program, describing everything from exploring cities and learning history firsthand to meaningful moments of community and reflection. Their stories capture what makes this program so unique: the chance to live the history and grow in ways that go far beyond the classroom.
Jeremy Steinhart
My semester in Israel was such an amazing experience! While attending Heller High, I was so privileged to walk the land of Israel and learn the history of my ancestors. One highlight was going to Tel Aviv for the day. We walked all over the city where Rav Kook lived, and it felt like the whole place had an amazing energy. Everyone is just so happy in Tel Aviv. My favorite part of the day was going up to random people on the street and asking them about their identity and how they define themselves here in Tel Aviv. At first, approaching random people sounded kind of awkward, but people in Israel are so open and welcoming. It was so interesting to hear how different everyone’s story was. We finished the day at the beach watching the sunset!
What I love about the program is that the learning doesn’t feel like school; it feels real. You are actually touring places you have heard about forever while you are learning about the subject at school. It makes everything way more meaningful, and I have learned a lot about Israel and, honestly, a lot about myself too. I would recommend this trip to anyone looking to explore the Holy Land and learn more about their Jewish identity.
Shira Speizer
Like many in our community, I have always wanted to go to Israel. So when I learned about the URJ’s Heller High program, I jumped at the opportunity to not only visit Israel, but live there for four months while traveling the country and learning all about the rich history of the land. Heller High is now incorporated into Alexander Muss High School in Israel, meaning that I got to participate in everything with Muss while, at the same
time, having a smaller core group of peers and learning about history and society through a Reform perspective. It gave our small group extra special opportunities such as a four-day orientation, outings, and full days with just us, and even a special Shabbat morning service with Rabbi Rick Jacobs and Rabbi Josh Weinberg, who were in Israel for the World Zionist Congress.
One of my favorite experiences from Heller High was havdalah in Hostage Square. On the fourth Shabbat in August, we had only been in Israel for about a day and a half, but between a graffiti tour, Friday evening services with other teens on a kibbutz, and more, we had already done so much. When we first got to Hostage Square, or Kikar HaChatufim in Hebrew, I was taken aback by everything around me. From a huge screen displaying the days, hours, and minutes Israel had been at war, to pictures of all the hostages, to yellow ribbons everywhere, to a mockup of a Hamas tunnel with bomb sounds that play as you walk through, it was all a bit overwhelming. But as a large group gathered to sing, pray, and listen to people share their stories, I was also overwhelmed by a sense of community. Even though Israelis have so many reasons to simply be angry at the world all the time, it was obvious to me that the majority of them choose to see the good as much as possible and focus on how the events, no matter how horrific, can bring them together. This is not something you always see, but it is the kind of thing that leads me to want to make it that much more common. That evening is just one example of four months of Heller High’s experiences and impact that anybody on the program is lucky to have.
Transformational New Gift to Jennifer Rosen Meade Preschool Honors Century-Plus Connection to Temple
The Laurie A. Crocker Fund in Memory of Ruth and George Winston
will ensure that our beloved JRM Preschool will continue to be the premier preschool of choice for young families beginning their Jewish journeys. Each year, the Fund will prioritize investments to create an enriched, early childhood experience for Temple’s littlest members, their teachers, and their families. In the coming year, the Fund also will invest in a new playground intentionally designed for young children to learn about themselves and each other through structured and unstructured play.
Jennifer Rosen Meade Preschool was founded in 1991 by Kermit Rosen Jr. in memory of his beloved daughter, Jennifer Rosen Meade.
Above clockwise form left: Marjorie Fisher Winston and George Winston (1944). Ruth and George Winston (2004). Laurie and Garry Crocker, today.
My maternal grandparents, Frederick and Ida Fisher, were pioneers of Seattle’s Jewish community, with Fred serving as a Temple board member in the 1920s. My mother, Marjorie, graduated from Temple in 1937 and later married George Winston, a Naval Officer, in 1943. Tragically, my mother passed away in 1945. My father later married Ruth Lancaster, who became my stepmother. I made this gift to honor each of them and to ensure that Temple’s preschool children have a wonderful experience for future generations.”
–Laurie Crocker
In this trying and tumultuous moment for the Jewish people, this gift will ensure that JRM and Temple will continue to provide firm and enduring foundations of faith and vision for our future.”
–Rabbi Daniel A. Weiner
The gift from Laurie Crocker already is creating an immediate and longer-term impact at JRM. We’ve already invested in new curricular enhancements for the classroom. Our new outdoor experience —under the beautiful trees on our Bellevue campus—will soon fill our kids with delight every day!”

In just a few months, Temple will welcome home members into beautiful, functional, and inclusive spaces that reflect how we worship, gather, and celebrate today. As we prepare for the Grand Opening Weekend May 1-3, 2026, know that you are a link between the generations of members and friends who have called Temple their spiritual home since 1899!
A Vision Made Possible by Community Generosity
Thank you to the hundreds of members who have already stepped forward with personally meaningful gifts and pledges to bring our vision to renew our Seattle campus to life. As of mid-January, our very generous Temple family had donated almost $23.6 million toward our stretch goal of $24 million! If you would like to participate, your new or increased gift will be matched – dollar for dollar – up to $50,000 per gift.
Thank You to our Matching Pool Donors

Gary and Karen Schwartz
In 1960, Temple’s then-President Sandy Birnbaum (z”l), Rabbi Levine (z”l) and others signed a historic contract with Sellen Construction for the “New Temple.” Six decades later, Sellen has brought the same level of quality to our transformation!
Recognizing Our Link Between the Generations
Unless anonymity is requested, donors to this historic campaign will be recognized in various ways in Seattle’s new Foyer. To be consistent with Temple’s values, no dollar amounts will be listed.
• Naming opportunities - for those who wish, gifts of $250,000 or more will be recognized on a central plaque
• Donor Wall - Gifts of $10,000 or more, in descending order, will be recognized by giving level
• Campaign donors at all levels will be listed in alphabetical order on a plaque adjacent to the Chapel entry.
For more information or to make a gift, please contact: Barb Maduell, Senior Director of Capital Campaign And Major Gifts bmaduell@tdhs-nw.org (425) 891-9392
After completing the dome repairs, workers begin to install a ring of lights that will hang halfway between the top of the ceiling and seating, enabling the room to feel more intimate for smaller gatherings. Inset: A tiered ceiling in the foyer will foster a greater sense of warmth and intimacy.
Here are just some highlights of what will be completed in the coming months:
• New concrete slab that levels the front half of the Alhadeff Sanctuary
• Sanctuary finishes, carpet, plaster, paint, fixed seating, and accessibility lift to the Bimah
• Completion of new restrooms
• Foyer finishes, carpet, paint, and lighting
• New audio-visual technology
• New security system
• New fire sprinkler system
• Installation of the Plaza entrance gates, fence, and landscaping
