How Learning Fuels Lake Nona’s Growth
Innovation and collaboration are behind everything we do in Lake Nona. Early Childhood Education: Where It All Begins
Four early-childhood learning institutions are in Lake Nona: The Learning Experience, The Goddard School, Primrose School of Lake Nona and Amazing Explorers Academy. Each school’s learning philosophy is different from the others.

Elementary School: Inspiring Students to Reach Their Full Potential
The two elementary schools in Lake Nona — NorthLake Park Community School and Laureate Park Elementary School — are both A-rated by Orange County Public Schools. A third school, Village Park Elementary, will be ready to receive students for the 2021-22 school year. NorthLake Park Community School shares its space with the Lake Nona YMCA, and is founded on an innovative public-private partnership. The two entities share resources and encourage parent, teacher and student involvement and interface to achieve lasting school success.

High School: Making Memories and Forging Forward
Since the area’s development first began, Lake Nona High School has served as the launchpad for transitional education between grade school and career choice. The A-rated Lake Nona High School gives students the opportunity to get a head start on college with its partnership with Valencia College, located just next door. The Collegiate Academy offers students the opportunity to complete an A.A. degree during their time in high school, and the Lake Nona High School Health Academy partners with AdventHealth East Orlando to prepare students for future careers in healthcare.
Higher Education: Teaching Leaders of the Next Generation
The original plans for Lake Nona were founded on the area as a hub for higher learning and advancement in technology and healthcare. It should be no surprise, then, that both the UCF Health Sciences Campus, which includes the College of Medicine and Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences, and the UF Research and Academic Center, home to the UF College of Pharmacy, decided to locate in Lake Nona. Recently, a new adult teaching hospital also opened — the UCF Lake Nona Medical Center — making way for even more advancement and innovation. The Lake Nona campus of Valencia College was designed with collaboration and attention to detail in mind, encouraging students to connect with each other and the world around them. The open-design library and learning support area encourage communication and exchange of ideas. The campus features 18 classrooms, two computer labs, six science labs and state-of-the-art educational tools for instructors.
In 2022, Lake Nona will be pleased to welcome a new bilingual campus for the Inter American University of Puerto Rico (IUPR). The campus will include 187,000 square feet of academic and administrative buildings, plus on-site housing for 192 students. With all these students contributing to the continued growth of Lake Nona, including three new public schools currently planned for the area, it’s easy to see how our community has become known as a leader in education.

Hit the Sand with Olympic Champions
Last year, pro beach volleyball players and Lake Nona Residents, Phil and Jennifer Dalhausser, announced a partnership with Lake Nona for the Phil Dalhausser Beach Volleyball academy. The classes are designed for kids and teens of all skill levels (plus there are adult social leagues if you’re looking to get your own spike on). As parents themselves, Phil and Jennifer are always on the lookout for fun things to do in town. With the academy in Lake Nona, they’re looking to inspire kids to kick up some sand and enjoy the fun of beach volleyball, which here in Lake Nona, we’re lucky enough to take part in year round.
Stop and Smell the Wildflowers
Head to Tavistock Lakes Boulevard near the Town Center and Lake Nona Boulevard near Boggy Creek Road with a Florida flower identification guide. The area is home to many species of wildflowers growing along the road, where kids can compete to see who can identify the most, and take photos with these beautiful blooms. You’re also likely to spy some pollinators, making it a great place for a little science lesson. This spot is also perfect for whipping out that fancy smartphone camera and snapping some colorful memories.
Most neighborhood playgrounds are reserved for residents, however guests and residents alike are welcome to play at our two City of Orlando Parks:
Blaze the Trails
With more than 44 miles of paved and unpaved trails to explore, Lake Nona is the perfect spot to hitch up the bikes and go for a ride or a nature walk. Soak in the sights and sounds from the flora and fauna around you. Make a scavenger hunt for the kids to keep busy as you enjoy Florida’s natural scenery.
Be the Talk of the Town Center
Lake Nona Town Center is the beating heart of the community, and it’s a hub for families looking to unwind after a long day or week. Start with dinner at Park Pizza & Brewing Co., Bosphorous or Chroma Modern Bar & Kitchen. The green space is a perfect spot to wait for a table, snag a snap in front of the angel wings mural, or let the kids play while you lounge on one of the patio chairs and soak up the moments of sunshine. Across the street at Boxi Park, the playground, pavilion and dog run areas are high-priority for kiddos to meet and greet each other and watch the favorite pups play.
Dive into Laureate Park Aquatic Center
It’s hot out there! If you’re a Laureate Park resident, grab the kids, their swimsuits and towels and splash away the day at the Laureate Park Aquatic Center, which recently grew by 17,000 square feet.

There’s a new 6,500-square-foot pavilion for picnicking, and a five-lane lap pool for your little Michael Phelps to practice his butterfly. On land, the half-sized basketball court and beach volleyball courts are perfect for playing before taking a dip. The Aquatic Center also features a splash pool for little squirts to play with water cannons and 25-foot-tall dumping bucket. Don’t worry, though: There are plenty of loungers nearby for parents to keep watch.
Scavenge for Art
Lake Nona is home to dozens of art installations that feature different art forms including sculptures, murals, digital art and live performances. Take the kids on a scavenger hunt to find these art installations throughout the community on the sides of buildings and parking garages, in gardens and courtyards, indoors and out. Select pieces of art in Lake Nona have QR codes installed in front of the installations. Scan the QR codes with your phone’s camera to learn more about the artist and inspiration behind each of these unique pieces.
Play the Day Away
Lake Nona kids can make the most of sunny days by playing at the neighborhood playgrounds complete with slides, a rope climb and custom features made with little ones in mind.

The park also has plenty of green space and a 12-foot wide trail for walking and jogging. Or, play ball at the McCoy Community Park located on Dowden Road near NorthLake Park. The 25-acre park features a pony field, softball field, and two Little League fields perfect for practicing your swing. The park also connects to Lake Nona’s robust trail system.
Thrill seekers can head over to Nona Adventure Park – an outdoor water park packed with activities for all ages and skill levels. Providing an adventure like no other, the park features a floating aqua obstacle course, cable park for wakeboarding and water skiing, and a 60foot climbing tower and ropes course.
One-of-a-kind Facilities Take a swim lesson or fitness class at Lake Nona’s YMCA Family Center open to all YMCA members and residents of NorthLake Park. Glass House
We’re proud to introduce you to the trio of talented artists behind the latest art installations located throughout Pixon, Lake Nona’s newest apartment community. Their custom artwork created with printed digital artwork, chalk and spray paint can be admired from the outside and inside.
Situated in Laureate Park near Canvas Restaurant & Market is “Glass House,” a stunning work of installation art conceived and constructed by Brooklyn-based artist Tom Fruin. It utilizes reclaimed materials and pulls cues from sustainable urban design and American folk art, all while eliciting the spiritual qualities of stained glass.

The Beacon and Code Wall
Equinox
At the heart of Lake Nona’s Town Center stands “The Beacon and Code Wall” by Lake Nona resident and public artist JERFE. “The Beacon” is a six-story landmark that comes to life at night with a visual experience of video, music and interactive elements. Alongside stands “Code Wall,” an installation of specialized dichroic glass with imagery and messages written in binary code.
When Lake Nona sought an artist in 2018 for this project, Cecilia Lueza’s winning entry certainly caught our eye. “For this piece, I wanted to incorporate that Florida vibe and also capture the dynamics of everyday life and create a sensation of movement with shapes and color,” said Cecilia.

Disco Dog Sculpture
Lake Nona Sign & Prismatic
The 35-foot tall, 3,100-pound stainless steel sculpture was designed by local Lake Nona artist JEFRE. The sculpture was inspired by Lake Nona, with the fractal, reflective surface replicating the water/waves of the community’s namesake – Lake Nona. The sculpture is meant to welcome residents and guests as they enter Town Center.
The mural’s cascade of color transforms the utilitarian chiller plant into a instagram-worthy artistic display. The mural designer, Carissa Bloemeke, was inspired by a deconstructed prism. The picture-perfect “Prismatic” mural plays off of the visual where interacting light creates a spectrum of different colors.

The GuideWell Innovation Center is a medical innovation hub for start-ups and health care entrepreneurs. Designed to promote collaboration and acceleration of groundbreaking ideas, the Innovation Center provides the resources and collaborative environment innovators need to develop new solutions, and the connections to take concepts to market.
Printed wall art designed by Carissa Bloemeke in the 5G Accelerator co-working space. The art is inspired by circuit board patterns found in technology, and geometric patterns taken from acceleration graphs.

Global Angel Wings Project Colette Miller created the Global Angel Wings Project in 2012, in the streets of Los Angeles, the “City of Angels.” They were painted to remind humanity that we are the angels of this earth. Colette has painted wings globally and right here in Lake Nona Town Center.

Nature Sculptures Created in Argentina, the sculptures were all made from re-used materials in the region. Measuring 10-feet high and each weighing in at 600-700 pounds, the artist Vanessa Mazza was inspired by the nature and wildlife native to her home in southern Argentina.
Brain Freeze Lining the exterior of Pixon’s second apartment building is “Brain Freeze.” Another bold piece designed by Carissa Bloemeke, the 9,000-square-foot mural gives the building the appearance of varying height and colorful emerging towers, creating a skyline that differs from the architecture of the building. The top of the mural features a metallic painted wave that changes color depending on the time of day.

Fusion “Fusion,” is a sculpture by Lake Nona public artist JERFE. The piece is located on the exterior lounge of Chroma Modern Bar + Kitchen, which harnesses its inspiration from the restaurant’s colorful small plate menu and serves as an artistic extension of “The Beacon and Code Wall.”

How the Orlando VA Medical Center provides outstanding care to Central Florida’s veteran community Whole-person health is a priority at the Orlando VA Medical Center in Lake Nona, where Veterans in Central Florida have access to everything from emergency to specialty care and integrative services designed with their individual needs in mind. The 1.2 million-square-foot facility includes a large multi-specialty outpatient clinic, 134-inpatient beds, 120-community living center beds, a 60-bed domiciliary and administrative and support services. The campus is also home to the Veterans Health Administration SimLEARN National Simulation Center where medical professionals from across the country and UCF College of Medicine students come to learn the best practices to improve health care for local Veterans. With more than 118,000 Veterans in the Central Florida region, the stateof-the-art Orlando VA Medical Center provides valuable resources and personalized care for our local heroes.

“We feel like a very important part of this community,” said Timothy Cooke, Orlando VA Medical Center Director and CEO. “Here in Lake Nona, we have a unique opportunity to collaborate that’s unlike other VA locations. Here, there’s a targeted effort of excellence from all of the health and life sciences partners to provide the highest quality and most advanced care.” In addition to clinical care and traditional treatment plans, the Orlando VA Medical Center takes a whole health approach to delivering patient-centered care. “When you think about pain management, your first solution might be medication. But at the Orlando VA Medical Center, the first solution could be Battle Field Acupuncture, mindfulness and meditation, or yoga,” Cooke explained. Across the VA Healthcare System, integrative solutions are used for whole health that focuses on the individual and empowers them to take charge of their own health and wellbeing. At the Orlando VA Medical Center, individual care is managed by five Patient
Aligned Care Teams (PACT) made up of a doctor, nurses, a psychologist and support staff. Each PACT is responsible for a group of about 1,200 Veterans.
When the coronavirus pandemic hit, the Orlando VA Medical Center embraced virtual to ensure Veterans could stay connected to their health care resources.
“Our team approach allows us to focus on groups of Veterans who share common health conditions like diabetes and chronic heart failure. This way, teams can bring in specialists to help care for multiple patients who are experiencing similar injuries and illnesses,” said Cooke.
“95% of our work was done in-person prior to the pandemic and we were able to flip that entirely to our Veteran Video Connect (VVC) platform that allows patients to safely and securely talk to their care teams from home,” said Cooke.
The Orlando VA Medical Center is becoming a center of excellence in one specialty – women’s care and women’s surgical care. “We have a high concentration of expertise, technologies, and resources available to not only deliver incredible women’s care, but also to teach the next generation of providers at the same time,” said Cooke. The total number of female Veterans enrolled in the Orlando VA Medical Center reached 15,455 in 2020, up from 13,569 in 2019. An estimated 25% of those Veterans may need access to women’s health services during a visit.
He explained that the virtual appointment option has been particularly helpful in mental health resources for Veterans. Tennis participation in the U.S. increased by 22% in 2020, with 21.64 million people hitting the courts, according to recent data from the Physical Activity Council’s Participation (PAC) report produced by Sports Marketing Surveys. The survey and report monitor more than 120 different sports and activities participated in by Americans. Of the more than 21 million Americans saying they played tennis last year, 6.78 million were either new or returning/lapsed players. Nearly 3 million of those were firsttime players, a 44% increase over players new to the sport in 2019. Additionally, the 3.82 million Americans who returned to the sport after time away was a 40% increase over the same measure in 2019. With its inherent social distancing, along with many other health benefits, tennis continued to show strength in the face of the coronavirus pandemic. Tennis’ positive health impacts are well documented, and have recently been further highlighted by one of the largest sport-specific studies to date. The study, published in the July 2020 edition of the Journal of Medicine and Science in Tennis, showed that those who play the sport have higher general, physical, social and mental health scores than the general population. The USTA National Campus in Lake Nona’s Sports and Performance District has seen the positive trends firsthand, posting strong programming numbers since the

facility reopened in June 2020. The Campus offers programming for both new and returning players of all ages and abilities, as well as standard court rentals. The 36-foot courts that are a part of the Nemours Family Zone are free to use if they are not already in use by scheduled programming or events. For youth players, the Nemours Family Zone offers beginner programming for kids 10-and-under, while the Youth Development program, for children ages 11-17, offers a more structured and comprehensive pathway of junior development. These programs are designed based upon a player’s individual progression, further honing in on skill development. For adult players, all of the traditional programming options are available. This includes Singles & Doubles Training, Singles & Doubles Live Ball, and Advanced Drills. USTA also offers onehour Cardio classes, Innovation Clinics, as well as Tennis 101 and 102 instruction.
New in June 2021, the Campus also features four pickleball and four padel courts as the USTA looks to expand its offerings of complementary racquets sports. In addition to being a community hub for recreational tennis activity, the Campus hosts more than 100 international, national and local events and tournaments. These include high level college events such as the NCAA DI Tennis Championships, as well as professional tournaments, international wheelchair competitions and various USTA national championships.
