editor’s note

ENJOY EVERY

sandwich

I’m not a big fan of inspirational quotes.

Okay, I know that sounds harsh, so before you write me off as a naysayer, let me qualify that a bit: I think that many popular nuggets of wisdom have been overused and abused to the point that they’ve lost their zest and impact. As a writer, I’ve spent countless hours sniffing out clichés and trying to figure out how to disguise commonplace messages in fresh packaging. I also don’t know how many times I’ve read some variation of the following sentence at the end of an extremely exhausting and poorly written student essay: “According to Gandhi/Kayne West/my high school soccer coach, whatever doesn’t kill you, only makes you stronger.” Don’t get me wrong: I’m a champion of positive mental health and uplifting others. We all need daily encouragement and mantras in our lives, but realproducersmag.com

like the way our bodies need — and sometimes crave — a variety of food, our spirits also need to consume different types of nourishment.

started to fill in the blank on a regular basis: Enjoy… every garden cucumber, every walk with my mom, every hot shower, every time my husband holds my hand, every hug from my 18-year-old son.

And that’s exactly what I got one day when my husband — who is not an inspirational-quote kind of guy — shared this little gem of inspiration that rockstar Warren Zevon said before he died of cancer: “Enjoy every sandwich.”

There was even a day when, on my way to the dentist’s office, I caught myself thinking, enjoy every dentist appointment. At first, I laughed at the absurdity of the thought, but then I realized how a few simple words have the power to ground us in life as it unfolds around us.

From the tuna fish salad sandwiches that my mom used to pack in my lunchbox to the po’ boys that my husband and I trekked for what seemed like miles in the New Orleans heat to devour, I am a big fan of sandwiches, so the thought of enjoying every sandwich was some advice that I had no problem getting behind. Beyond my infatuation with one of the most perfect and diverse foods, “Enjoy every sandwich” incited me to slowly chew each bite of life and appreciate the flavor of each moment. The phrase impressed me so much that I

This month, as you take a break and read all the pages sandwiched between the front and back cover, I hope the stories “nourish” you and that you find some gems of inspiration — some words of wisdom to ground you in the present moment, so that you, too, can enjoy every sandwich…and, of course, if a sandwich doesn’t inspire you as it did me, feel free to fill in the blank with one of life’s many simple treats and enjoy every bite of it! GARY BRINCAT & SCOTT FADER

Committed to Clients, Agents and the Community

realproducersmag.com

Oakland County Real Producers • 17

For Scott Fader and Gary Brincat, real estate is more than a business opportunity that feeds their families: It’s a venture of love fueled by their passion for the industry and commitment to their clients, agents and the community. Through Mitten Realty Group, LLC, Co-Owners Scott and Gary have leveraged their combined 40 years of real estate experience in buying, renting, flipping and selling homes — as well as their extensive training in contract negotiations — to build a thriving veteran-owned business and one of Michigan’s 2019 top-25 firms founded on the simple principle that there is always time to help someone else succeed. “We don’t keep score, and we help each other whenever possible,” Gary said. “We answer our agents’ calls 24/7 and make sure that our agents have access to us, no matter what day or time — this allows them to have success with their buyers or sellers.” “We don’t just claim to provide training; we actually provide great individual and group training,” Scott said. “We also minimize monthly fees and costs.” Another way that Scott and Gary distinguish their business and actualize their commitment to others 18 • October 2020

is through their ongoing efforts to help veterans, law enforcement, firefighters and other first responders. As honorary members of the Detroit Police Lieutenants and Sergeants Association (DPLSA), Scott and Gary have sponsored the DPLSA Honors Ball — an event that recognizes fallen officers — as well as golf outings to fundraise for Detroit police. Mitten Realty Group also partners with a local non-profit that fundraises for local and national charities through real estate, in addition to reducing commissions or returning 33% of their commissions back to first responders and military members following the purchase or sale of a home. “Beyond being a veteran-owned business, what motivates us is that so many people put their lives on the line, sacrificing time, family and themselves for others. We like to make sure these people know they are appreciated,” said Scott. Before becoming a real estate agent, Scott worked with his father’s CPA firm, which handled accounting for investors and real estate agents. He then was presented with an investment opportunity and earned his real estate license in 2003. In 2008, when Scott was 35 years old, he took a hiatus from real estate to join the army where he was deployed to Afghanistan. He then went on to earn his broker’s license in 2018. @realproducers

Gary has spent 20 years buying, flipping and investing in real estate, and he also served as vice president of sales for a multinational marketing company and a multinational software company. Then about three years ago, Gary decided to leave the corporate world and become a real estate agent, and that’s when he teamed up with Scott to build Mitten Realty Group. Scott and Gary, both of whom were multi-million dollar producers in 2019 and are on track to increase production in 2020, are well-versed in all aspects of the business, but Scott gravitates toward marketing and working with buyers while Gary enjoys working with sellers. Right now, they are focused on growing their team with individuals who share their passion for real estate and dedication to helping others, which they say can be challenging at times because they are looking to work with people who look beyond the profit. They shared that one of their goals is to create a “long-term culture and environment where people look forward to coming to work each day.” They are also grateful for all of their agents. “We are like a family,” Scott said. “Without our agents, we would not be growing as we are.” When Scott isn’t with his work family, he enjoys spending time with Sara — his wife of 20 years — and their son Diego, who they adopted from Guatemala in 2006. The Faders travel to Disney World several times a year, and Scott says they are “Disney addicts.” Scott, who regularly takes online classes for both business and personal growth, also says that he is “addicted to education” and loves reading and watching biographies. Gary and his wife Romiana — who was born in Bulgaria — met in France and like to travel. They have two children and four grandchildren. Their daughter Nelly is a commercial property manager, and their son William, who is FAA licensed to fly drones, is an agent and photographer at Mitten Realty Group. Gary is a 7th-degree black belt and owns two martial arts schools. He also developed a two-credit hour continuing education real estate safety class, trains police in self-defense and enjoys business, mystery and puzzle-solving books. Scott and Gary agree that success is measured on an individual, team and company basis, and they both strive to succeed in all three areas. They also believe that success will come to those who work at it. “Putting in the time, working through the ups and the downs and being able to see mistakes as opportunities will lead you to the paths you want and the goals you seek,” Gary said. “We all run into issues with deals, clients, mortgage companies and title companies — there are a lot of moving parts — but we know each time we encounter an issue, we learn from it and are more likely to be prepared for the next transaction.” For Gary, the most rewarding aspect of his business is helping someone achieve something they didn’t think was possible. For Scott, it’s helping veterans and first responders. Collectively, they care a great deal about their clients, agents and community. “Without our clients, agents and community, Mitten Realty Group would not be here,” they said. realproducersmag.com

JAYMIE PATERNOSTER

HOUSE CALL HOME INSPECTION A Business Built on Solid Communications and Integrity Jaymie Paternoster is a woman of deep faith who has a love for her family and a commitment to conduct and operate her business with absolute integrity and genuine communication.

As the owner of House Call Home Inspection, Jaymie wears many hats to get the job done. While she is also an inspector, an inspector trainer, the communications director, and the accountant, she will affectionately refer to herself as a software guru, a micromanager and social butterfly. She runs her business with her husband, Brandon, who is an incredible visionary and coach. Together they use their strengths and complement one another with divided responsibilities. “Brandon makes sure our team is successful and accountable,” Jaymie shared. “He keeps us educated and manages our services and equipment while I am passionate about training our home inspectors in technology and the importance of communication.” Jaymie’s journey to where she is today is amazing. She has an associate’s degree in architectural technology and a bachelor’s degree in facility management. After she landed her first job as a facility designer in Manhattan, New York, she decided to attend graduate school at New York University where she earned her master’s degree in speech and interpersonal communication.

In 2018, Jaymie launched House Call in the Detroit area. “This is where my husband is from and we truly missed living in a larger city,” Jaymie said. “We love building a business by building genuine relationships — Detroit is a great city to make that happen!” During the first two years in Detroit, the company

In 2006 — one year after Hurricane Katrina — there was a massive need for building renovations in New Orleans. With the abundance of work in her industry, Jaymie decided to move south to continue the pursuit of her career. After years of dating long distance, Brandon decided to join Jaymie in New Orleans as well. It was there they established the foundation for their relationship. They found a common leadership role within their church and a shared vision for their future as a couple and as business partners. The two started a photo booth company and immediately became hooked on entrepreneurship. “What started out as a hobby for some extra ‘fun’ money, quickly turned to the realization of how well we worked together,” Jaymie recalled. “After that, we really started to build our business and our confidence as business owners.” After Jaymie became a licensed home inspector in 2010, she began working with House Call as a home inspector. “I was hired by the owner in New Orleans,” Jaymie said. “We were a team of 10 and it really felt like family.” After three years of learning the business, Jaymie and her husband sold their photo booth business and purchased a House Call franchise to be set up in Indiana to be closer to Jaymie’s hometown. This was the first franchise for the company to open north of the Mississippi. Their business was growing and so was their family — while all this was happening, the couple learned they would soon be parents. Within a year, Jaymie was awarded “Entrepreneur of the Year” by the local Woman’s Council of REALTORS®. realproducersmag.com

doubled their business. “Best of all, after 10 years in the industry our work is still fun and rewarding,” she said. The team focus is centered around several basic principles that have made them successful: empowering their clients with knowledge and working with integrity while creating peace-ofmind through education; creating an unparalleled environment that attracts top talent and fun partners; prioritizing God, family and business — in that order; sharing daily gratitude and thanksgiving; encouraging health in spirit, mind and body in an energized environment; accountability in each other’s families, education and personal growth; and following the Golden Rule through collaboration, client service and partner relationships. The company offers almost any service a person would need to know regarding how their home functions. “Small changes in our industry will always ruffle a few feathers or make most business owners stand up a little straighter,” Jaymie explained. “But you know how we thrive; communication, friendly demeanor, a humble disposition and ongoing availability to our clients — we don’t complicate it.”

Because home inspections are a crucial part of the purchase and clients rely on inspection companies for valuable information during the decision-making process, Jaymie believes the experience doesn’t need to be scary or overwhelming. “We conduct all our services with joy and enthusiasm,” Jaymie said. “We believe that 50% of our job is to inform clients about safety issues and maintenance, and the other 50% is to communicate that information in a way that our clients understand.” To empower their clients, Jaymie’s teams are trained to teach their clients what they know, so they feel confident and educated to make the best decisions possible. “When we know something, we educate our clients, so they can move forward with knowledge and confidence,” Jaymie shared. “Isn’t that why we were created? To help others?” Jaymie and her husband, Brandon, have been married for nine years and together they have two children — Isaiah, 6, and Josephine, 3. The Magic of Yoga

healthy living By Shauna Osborne

As a near-lifelong yoga enthusiast, I can’t help but break into a wide smile at the mention of this most peaceful and centering practice. Yoga, from the Sanskrit word for “yoke” or “union,” is an ancient tradition combining breathwork, meditation, and various poses, or asanas, to unite the body and mind, resulting in greater mental clarity and bodily relaxation. First introduced in the U.S. in the late 1800s, nowadays, there’s a yoga class for everyone: hot, aerial, beer…even goat! More popular than ever, the practice of yoga offers numerous evidence-based health benefits for faithful yogis.

Physical • Improved cardiovascular health: Yoga

is known to lower blood pressure, blood sugar, and heart rate, and has also been linked to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels. • Better sleep quality: Regular yoga practice can improve sleep quality through its impact on melatonin secretion, a hormone that regulates slumber and wakefulness. It also diminishes common sleep impediments like anxiety, depression, and stress (discussed below), and activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is calming and restorative. • Improved flexibility and balance / reduced chronic pain: The most obvi-

ous physical benefits of this practice, flexibility is improved through the 28 • October 2020

repetition of asanas, gradually loosening tight muscles and connective tissues that can lead to poor alignment and chronic pain. Yoga also increases proprioception (the perception of the body in space), which leads to better balance and posture overall. Mental / Emotional • Decreased stress, depression, and anxiety:

A core principle of yoga is presence – that is, being present in the current moment, not worrying over the future or past. Further, multiple studies have shown yoga practice to decrease the secretion of cortisol, the primary stress hormone that influences serotonin levels, and monoamine oxidase, an enzyme that breaks down neurotransmitters.

• Healthier eating habits / body image:

Another fundamental tenet of yoga is mindfulness, and this practice travels with yogis from the mat and into everyday life choices. Mindful eating means taking time to note the physical sensations of each bite, encouraging healthier eating behaviors, better self-esteem, and elevated bodily awareness. • Clearer mental acuity / concentration:

The breathwork and meditation involved in yoga work to calm the mind and body, keeping attention on the present and distracting thoughts away. The discipline of focusing on the breath and yogic asanas enables practitioners, over time, to remain more engaged and alert in meaningful situations and release feelings or information not serving them. @realproducers

LISA LIPARI Chasing Goals with Honesty and Hard Work

30 • October 2020

rising star By Robbyn Moore Photos by Jessica Laine Photography

@realproducers

With less than five years in the real estate business, Lisa has already earned Rookie of the Year at Max Broock Real Estate and Top Dog honors for the highest sales volume at DOBI Real Estate, as well as been named a 2020 Real Estate All-Star by “Hour Detroit.” She is a 2020 board member for the Women’s Council of REALTORS® in Birmingham/Bloomfield and a member of Impact100 Oakland County. Lisa is also a charity committee member at DOBI and launched a working-moms networking group in May 2019. “Growing up, my parents always taught me to be very independent and to rely only on myself for my financial needs,” Lisa recalled. “My mother encouraged education and a career in corporate America while my father demonstrated the benefits of entrepreneurship and working independently.” After years of working in a corporate environment, Lisa was ready for a change. She wanted the freedom to make her own schedule and the ability to earn more money. At the time, she managed an office of 15 employees and worked more than 80 hours a week. “I was overworked and underpaid and very stressed out,” Lisa said. “It was time for me to leave and do something else.”

L

Lisa Lipari is no stranger to hard work, and to say she is driven would be an understatement. At the age of 14, she started working at her family’s restaurants. She continued to work while she was getting her bachelor’s degree at Michigan State University and held down two jobs while completing her MBA at Walsh College. Furthermore, when Lisa

realproducersmag.com

decided it was time to get her real estate license, she enrolled in a 40hour, one-week real estate course, passed the exam and began her real estate career three weeks later. “I am an extremely competitive person but mostly with myself,” Lisa confessed. “I am definitely a goal chaser, and I’m always looking for ways to be better today than I was yesterday.”

Real estate was a natural fit for Lisa. Her self-starting personality, along with her education and experience, were the necessary tools needed to launch her real estate career. “I have always loved looking at houses, seeing different styles, architecture and design,” Lisa said. “Also, my previous work experience in customer service and relationship building gave me confidence that I could excel in this career.” Beyond Lisa’s impressive skill set, it is her ability to connect with clients that has made her successful — and most fulfilled in her work. She said her best moments are when her clients are happy. “I like to create a Oakland County Real Producers • 31

positive, memorable home-buying experience for my clients,” Lisa said. “I know I’ve done my job when my clients tell me how happy they are in their new home. I work hard to create a seamless process from the first meeting to the closing. There is no greater feeling or compliment when my clients share their experience with others, resulting in a referral. Additionally, it is confirmation of a job well done when clients become friends.”

As a family, they spend time doing puzzles, going to the park, swimming and having lots of dance parties. Lisa shared how her real estate career has given her the freedom to spend time with her family and attend her son’s activities that she may otherwise have missed if she had stayed in her previous positions. “My goal is to continue doing real estate for the rest of my life,” Lisa shared. “We plan to expand our family, and I know that I will be able to do that and have a career without skipping a beat.”

Over the years, Lisa has proven to be a hard-working agent to even her closest of friends. In a few instances, her friends had originally enlisted other agents to do the work, however, after six months — when none of the homes sold — Lisa sold each of the homes within a week. “Sometimes I think friends don’t want to interfere with my professional activities,” Lisa said. “That couldn’t be further from the truth. I am eager to work hard and help my friends, and in this instance, sell all of their homes quickly!” Lisa is nearing her fifth year in real estate with a total sales volume over $20 million. She is best known for honesty and transparency in her business transactions. “I am very forthcoming with my clients,” Lisa said. “If I don’t think a client should buy a house, I will tell them because I am here to guide them and help them make the right decision — that’s my job.” She offered sound advice to others just entering the marketplace. “The first thing I suggest is to be patient,” Lisa laughed. “It takes time to establish yourself and earn a good living.” Additionally, Lisa suggested investing in yourself. “This advice was given to me early in my career, and it has paid off,” she said. “I also think it is important to differentiate yourself by creating marketing materials that stand out.” Furthermore, Lisa stressed the importance of education and staying informed. “It is so important to read everything carefully and stay up to date on new laws, rules and changes within the industry.” Lastly, Lisa emphasized the importance of communication. “This is what I do best,” Lisa said with a smile. “I may even over-communicate.” Lisa said she prides herself on immediately responding to all calls, texts and emails. “Clients appreciate a prompt response. They like knowing they are a priority. And while I’m sometimes attached to my phone, I think my accessibility is what helps make me successful.” When she is not working, Lisa can be found at the gym or on the golf course at the Detroit Golf Club where she and her husband Jimmy are members. The couple has a 2-and-a-half-year-old son, Luca. 32 • October 2020

@realproducers

Do you work with someone who truly makes a difference in the industry, in your business or at your office? Email Terra Csotty at terra. csotty@realproducersmag.com to nominate them to be featured as a Behind-the-Scenes All-Star in an upcoming issue.

Jennifer Tait, managing broker at Brookstone Realtors, says that Kirstie has played a major role in the success and growth of Brookstone. “You will often hear Brookstone Founders Brandon Mulrenin and Bill Calunas say how Kristie is the best decision the company has ever made,” Jennifer said. “I truly agree with that statement and know all others at Brookstone also agree.” surrounded by a great support system make each day exciting and fun — and motivates me to go above and beyond. What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Being surrounded by a supportive team and knowing I’m always working toward the next level in my career is very rewarding. I also enjoy meeting new people and getting to personally know the agents rather than just being a support staff member. We are a family at Brookstone, and I love that. What is the most challenging aspect of your job?

The fast-paced and ever-changing environment of real estate. What is one thing about you that others might find surprising or interesting?

I am a huge animal lover. I not only have many of my own fur babies, but I also am a foster with the Michigan Humane Society. My house is constantly a zoo! When you’re not working, what do you like to do for fun?

I enjoy hiking, exploring, reading, swimming, going up north to my grandparents’ cabin and spending time with my family. How do you feel about being nominated as a Behind-the-Scenes All-Star?

I was shocked to see that I was nominated for this. It was very unexpected, and I am completely honored and humbled. Is there anything else you’d like to share about yourself, about your job or about your relationship with the person who nominated you?

I’m surrounded by amazing people and amazing leaders who inspire and encourage me to be better each and every day. I’m so thankful to have that with this company and to have found my place here at Brookstone. I say it all the time: I’m the happiest I’ve ever been, and I’m truly honored to work for Brookstone Realtors.

realproducersmag.com

According to Jennifer, Kristie goes above and beyond to individually help each one of Brookstone’s 135+ agents. More so, Kristie is very reliable: She always finds a way to get the job done — even in last-minute or high-pressure situations. “Kristie never needs to be asked more than once — you know it will get done and be done right when she takes on a task,” Jennifer said. “Whether it comes from staff on the leadership team, a Brookstone agent or a client, she is always more than willing to help and accommodate in any way needed.” Jennifer appreciates what a great listener Kristie is and how she takes the time to hear all sides of a situation. “At our company leadership meetings, Kristie can be found taking notes and staying quiet for the most part; however, when she does speak up, she always leads with valuable, non-biased input,” Jennifer said. Kristie plays a monumental role in the careers of Brookstone’s agents and staff members; it’s precisely why they voted her the “People’s Choice Award” winner in their office. “Once you get to know Kristie, it is apparent that she loves her family, cares about others, and truly loves and admires her work,” Jennifer said.

Benefits of

BAKING Homemade

BREAD By Shauna Osborne

Baking bread at home can seem like a formidable task, at first. Fickle variables like rising times, protein levels in flour, and proper dough “stickiness” are enough to send many running for the bread aisle. However, with a little time, practice, and effort, bread-baking can easily become a part of your weekly routine. The holidays – and all associated parties, dinners, and gatherings – are just around the corner, so step up your bread game this fall and get ready to impress! • Healthy: Ever notice how store-bought bread never quite seems to mold? That’s because it’s loaded with artificial preservatives, such as calcium propionate and propionic acid, to extend its shelf life. Not to mention, store-bought bread is generally loaded with calories and sugar, and lacking the benefits of real whole wheat: fiber, protein, micronutrients, and B vitamins. Homemade bread recipes can be adjusted – adding rye flour, oats, flax, or healthy seeds and nuts – to be as tasty and healthy as you please! realproducersmag.com

• Fresh: That bread you just picked up at the store – likely baked in and transported from a factory hundreds of miles away – was already starting to go stale when you bought it. Since most storebought bread is pre-sliced, more surface area of the bread is exposed, which means it goes stale faster. With homemade bread, you always know it’s fresh! • Cost-effective: A 1-pound loaf of storebrand white bread costs around $1.50, depending on where you live. Looking for organic or other artisanal breads, like sourdough, multi-grain, or cinna-

mon-raisin? Expect to pay up to $5/6 for a loaf. A basic sandwich bread recipe comprises simple, inexpensive ingredients like flour, water, and yeast, which means a loaf or two can be made for less than a dollar once all the standard ingredients are acquired. • Fun! Finally, making bread is deeply gratifying. The satisfaction of kneading and punching down the dough…the yeasty smell of baking bread wafting through the house…the pleasure of watching others enjoy your masterpiece – perfection! Why stop with bread? A quick Google search reveals a plethora of easy recipes for homemade buns, pizza crust, even cinnamon rolls, both with and without a bread-maker. It’s going to be a yummy fall!

KAREN

MARCINAK FINDING SUCCESS IN THE FREEDOM

42 • October 2020

@realproducers

The events in Karen’s life have shaped and defined her and guided her to where she is today. Her experiences continuously motivate her and remind her of her creativity, determination, and optimistic point of view. Karen recalls a time when she had to take care of her younger sister while her mother was away at work. “My friends were asking me to play and I had to stay with my sister,” she said. “I remember thinking I could only count on myself. To this day, I have a hard time asking for help because of that time in my life.” It was also during this impressionable time in Karen’s life when she realized she could do whatever she set her mind to; and no one was going to stop her. This mindset has become a part of Karen’s mantra and fueled her to success. Karen loves to keep things interesting in her life. Her family refers to her, saying, “You never know what Karen is going to do.” Karen said with a smile, “I take it as a compliment because it’s correct. I might decide to go hang-gliding off a cliff one day, and the next day I’m flying an airplane.” In 1993, Karen took a class on setting goals. She made her first vision board which included a picture of a vacation home. Even before she had her own home, she found her dream vacation property and made it her own. “I still use vision boards today because they work,” Karen said. “My advice to anyone setting goals is to visualize what you want, then put it down on paper or create a board — seeing what you want helps define who you are, what makes you unique and clearly defines your direction.”

For 31 years, Associate Broker Karen Marcinak has defined her business success in a variety of ways: finding the perfect home for her clients, accomplishing daily goals — both big and small — and rewarding herself with a muchearned vacation. However, her number one definition for success is having the freedom of choice.

When Karen first graduated from college, she had a very uninspiring job and found herself wishing the weeks away with a regular case of the “Sunday-night blues.” Recognizing there was a better way to earn a living, Karen decided to combine realproducersmag.com

her marketing degree and part-time work as a real estate agent, and pave a career path for herself. “Now, there are no Mondays,” Karen laughed. “As real estate agents, we have the choice to work every day of the week if we choose — or pick the days that work best for us.” Karen said she loves the freedom to make her own schedule. She often helps her grandparents get to their doctor appointments or spends a wellearned afternoon on her boat. Karen added, “Having the ability to choose what you want in life is true freedom — and in my opinion — the ultimate measure of success.”

When asked what other advice she had for up-andcoming real estate agents, Karen suggested, “Learn the basics — they will get you through tough times. Also, find your niche by developing business from your own interests and hobbies. It’s smart to work within areas you’re already passionate about — providing a unique brand yourself that can be carried throughout all of your advertising and taglines.” She also added, “Beef up your negotiating skills. You will need them to position your offers to purchase or for upcoming objections.” Karen also emphasized the importance of “being the expert” — suggesting meeting and interviewing multiple mortgage representatives. “You want to be prepared for your clients — offering them knowledge and options will bring them comfort,” she said. “And lastly, but most importantly, keep those relationships going — long after the closing. In the end, Oakland County Real Producers • 43

what I cherish the most is the time I spent with a ‘friend’ — because we usually end up becoming friends.”

team is a vital working component for securing her desire to practice both real estate and doctoring.

“When was the last time you did something for the first time?” She said, “It delights my heart to continuously discover new things.”

Karen — who is with Real Estate One — has a proven track record for what it takes to be a leader in the real estate business. When she first entered the marketplace, she identified opportunities for her business by hosting a booth at a bridal show. “I figured that starting a new chapter for newly-engaged couples also included getting a new marital residence,” Karen shared. “And by golly, it worked!” she laughed. “I established relationships with first-time buyers, their families and their friends. I still get clients from my bridal show days because 90% of my business is repeat and referral.”

“As I get older, it feels like the years go by faster and faster,” Karen said. “My resolve to this is having a bucket list — big or small, once a week, once a year — it fills your life with purpose and excitement.” Karen relates to the words sung by singer Darius Rucker,

Karen will probably best be remembered for her wonderful laugh — a likable trait that has her noticed in a crowd — easy to recognize, hard to forget. She has an optimistic view of life and embraces each day with gratitude. She concluded, “At the end of the day, when you lay to rest, ask yourself, did I celebrate?”

As a result of Karen’s unique approach to business, she was asked to contribute a chapter in a book titled, “How to Buy and Sell Real Estate in Today’s Market.” Her co-authored chapter is titled “Trust,” which makes her smile when she thinks back to how she began her career. Through the years, Karen has been recognized as an All-Star for “Hour Detroit” magazine, a member of Real Estate One’s Multi-Million Dollar Club, President’s Council of Excellence, President’s Diamond Award, President’s Gold Award and top 5% in sales volume in the nation. Karen was the president of the Women’s Council of REALTORS® in 2016-2017 and received an honor for membership retention — an award which had not been won since the organization’s inception in 1938 for her chapter. Helping people move into their next chapter of life has always been the most rewarding aspect of what Karen does. Looking ahead, Karen would like to build a team — sharing with them the knowledge she has gained over the years. Currently, Karen is studying to become a naturopathic doctor — a dream she has had since college. Developing her real estate 44 • October 2020

When news of a pandemic broke earlier this year, few of us could have predicted that we would spend months wearing masks, distancing ourselves from friends and colleagues, and missing out on all of our favorite live events, restaurants, travel destinations and so much more. While the desire for in-person interaction has only intensified for some, many are still wary of planning or attending an event without serious protocols in place. The good news is that once we are given the all-clear to gather in larger numbers again, our newly-heightened awareness of how to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 will also help keep the usual suspects like influenza and the common cold at bay as well. While buffet lines and self-serve stations have long been standards of catered events, today’s protocols greatly reduce the number of people handling items used for serving and coming in contact with food. Plated dinners might have been reserved for more formal occasions in the past, but restaurants, caterers and venues are hiring more servers and training them in the latest CDC and FDA protocols to meet the demand for increased staffing across the board. @realproducers

Of course, the fewer people touching liquor bottles, dishes and serving utensils the better, so hiring bartenders and waitstaff to serve food and beverages is ideal. Also, opt for passed hors d’oeuvres instead of stations and plated dinners or individual meal boxes instead of buffets. Eliminate as much hand-to-hand contact as possible by using individually rolled utensils placed at the tables. Say goodbye to bowls of chips and questions like, “Can you please pass the salt?” by replacing communal items with single-serve condiments and individually wrapped snacks.

GO ABOVE AND BEYOND

While temperature checks and health questionnaires upon entry would have seemed extreme and borderline invasive in 2019, the coronavirus has pushed us into a whole new level of caution in 2020 and made us more receptive to a variety of new precautionary measures. While a few guests may scoff at such policies, most will happily comply if it is an event they are truly interested in attending. Touchless forehead monitors are quick and easy, and a short questionnaire prior to entry will offer a sense of assurance that you care enough not to admit someone who is symptomatic or has been in a high-risk situation recently.

AMP UP THE CLEANLINESS

We all know we need to wash our hands a lot more regularly these days, but sometimes a thorough washing isn’t always an option. Hand sanitizing stations should be readily available near each restroom and also near the bar or other common areas. To eliminate unnecessary surface touching, prop open any interior doors that are not used for privacy, and/or have a volunteer act as the doorperson for high traffic entryways. If your company is hosting many events or regular visitors in your office, consider replacing doorknobs with elbow-friendly push pads or touch-free, auto-open devices where feasible. Also install touchless soap dispensers and hand dryers, as well as motion-sensing light switches in restrooms. If hosting an event in your home or another location where touch-free devices are not available, disposable paper towels instead of communal cloth towels are the best bet.

realproducersmag.com

Regardless of which measures you take, communication is key. Let your guests know ahead of time what is being done to assure their safety, as well as what you will be requiring of them prior to entry into your event, so they can make an informed go/no-go decision. As an optimist, I am hopeful we will be back to some semblance of normal by the holidays and will find our calendars brimming with too many events to choose from. In-person events may never go back to the way things were pre-coronavirus, but the new normals to ensure guests’ well-being might just be the better way after all. Your best practices for health and hygiene will be rewarded with good attendance, happy guests and fond memories!

Tom was born and raised in Chelsea, Michigan, by loving parents who impressed upon him the value of hard work, positivity and giving back to the community. After years as part-owner of a wholesale floral corporation and after the passing of both his parents, Tom decided it was time to try something new. He was 50 years old. “My dad got his real estate license at age 65,” Tom shared. “I viewed this as a sign that it was something I should pursue.” As with many new real estate agents, Tom initially found the business to be overwhelming. “There were so many different ways to develop my business,” Tom recalled. “The best advice I got was from Steve Stockton who guided me to pick a path, write it down, hold myself accountable for daily actions and just simply work hard.” After a year, Tom watched his business take off. His tenacity and optimism led him to meeting and exceeding his personal goals. He has been recognized as a top agent in “Hour Detroit” and a 2018 recipient of the State of Michigan Cultural Ambassador Award for Keller Williams where he was acknowledged among other agents from around the world.

Tom Gaunt leads his life with positivity. His first two years at Keller Williams Showcase - Commerce Township, he was voted the happiest agent in the office. He is also the current president of the Huron Valley Optimist Club and an active member in Optimist International, which is a 100-year-old charity helping children in local school districts. Tom enjoys bringing happiness to his clients and leads his business and community involvement with a happy heart. realproducersmag.com

Whether his clients are listing or buying, Tom treats all his clients like family. “There is a level of stress in almost every transaction,” Tom said. “It is my goal to bring a little relief to those situations along with positive energy and of course, some smiles — it’s what I love about being a real estate agent.” Nearly 80% of Tom’s business comes from referrals. He has built his career on a fundamental business model that consists of answering phone calls, ac-

curate listings, listening to his clients’ needs, follow-through, and enthusiasm in every conversation. “My clients know I care about them,” Tom said. “I treat everyone with respect and kindness. I work hard for my clients and I am honest and genuine in my efforts. I not only build trust with my clients but also lifelong friendships.”

While this was a difficult time in his life, Tom’s optimism prevailed. When he first began his real estate career, he honored his parents — who were very charitable people — by donating at least $100 from every closing to his optimist group. “Since that time, I’ve increased my giving and added Lake-

land High and Milford High athletics to my donations.” Any client working with Tom is guaranteed a lot of laughter and smiles. “I’m a happy person,” Tom said with a smile. “One of my life’s goals is to bring a smile to every person I meet — even if it’s only for a brief moment.”

When Tom was in eighth grade, he joined the school swimming team. To this day, he attributes his goal setting, time management, and determination to the lessons his sport taught him. Additionally, after the birth of his two children — Chelsea, 29, and Nick, 27 — Tom developed a level of gratitude for life’s precious moments. “My life experiences have made me who I am today,” Tom stated. “I’ve always been a really positive person and I tend to see the good side in every human being.” Real estate is a great environment for Tom to share his smile and laughter with others. He is passionate about helping people realize their dream of finding a home and handles most of his transactions on his own. “I have no desire to build a team,” he said. “I do, however, lean on another agent in my office, Rick Barren, who helps cover me when I’m on vacation or have multiple listings that need assistance. He’s also about 20 years younger than me and helps me see the business from a different perspective.” Tom is an avid sportsman. He plays basketball several days a week, he is in golf and bowling leagues, and he still finds time to travel and ride his motorcycle. He and his wife, Laura, have been married for eight years, and together they enjoy gardening, playing with their two German Shepherds and making each other laugh. In 2014, both of Tom’s parents died within five weeks of each other.

Maggie’s

WIGS

charity spotlight By Robbyn Moore

KIDS

of Michigan, Inc

A BEAUTIFUL ADVOCATE FOR KIDS When Maggie Varney became a licensed cosmetologist over 40 years ago, she had no idea the impact she would later have on the lives of so many children. Because of her kindness, effort and care, thousands of children who experience hair loss can receive wigs and support services at no charge throughout the state of Michigan. Maggie’s inspiration and passion began when she was volunteering her time through the American Cancer Society to help adults deal with appearance-related side effects from cancer treatments. After years of teaching the class, Maggie met a young girl who attended the workshop with her mother. Thinking the young girl was

there to support her mother, Maggie soon learned it was the young girl who needed the assistance. Unfortunately, at the time, wigs were tailored in a style for adults — leaving little or no options for a child or a teen’s head. Maggie invited the young girl to her salon and quickly figured out a way to provide the support she needed. With the young girl as Maggie’s catalyst, she launched Maggie’s Wigs 4 Kids of Michigan, Inc. (W4K). Seventeen years later, through the kindness and generosity of others, W4K has been able to serve over 4,700 Michigan children from 49 different counties at no charge to them or their families. A typical wig retails between $2,500$3,000, costing W4K $800 and 16 hours of labor. “Each child’s story is so unique,” Maggie shared. “It is an

honor and privilege to give a unique service during a time of uncertainty.” The non-profit organization provides wigs and support to children ages 3-18 who experience hair loss due to cancer, alopecia, trichotillomania, hydrocephalus, lupus, blood disorders, severe burns, dog bites, autism, down syndrome, and cerebral palsy. Each child gets a custom-made wig based on their individual head size. They also receive support service classes, social activities, field trips and counseling. Maggie explained, “Our goal is to provide a wig to every Michigan child in need. Since we opened our services in 2003 — thanks to the open hearts of the community — no child has ever been turned away and there’s never been a waiting list.” Maggie devotes 90 hours a week to managing the organization — including

talented and hard-working individuals helping to support the group as well as an impressive Board of Directors, and hundreds of volunteers and businesses, schools and churches who believe in the mission. “Our dream is to double the number of children we serve — requiring a much bigger space than our current facility,” Maggie said. “We are in the midst of a capital campaign to raise funds and build a permanent brickand-mortar wellness center where we can expand our programming.” To help with this initiative — through the donation and support from the DG Foundation and Keller Williams Great Lakes — W4K was given a house to restore and sell for seed money for their capital campaign. “The house was boarded and needed a lot of work,” she said, “But we put $20,000 into it and sold it for $60,000 — giving us a solid base to launch our campaign.” Eleni, one of the organization’s newest children who experiences alopecia.

community outreach and fundraising. “I give so much of my time because that’s the level of dedication and commitment it takes to run a successful non-profit group,” she said. “It’s all worth it to ensure every child’s needs are met. I always make sure the children’s needs are taken care of first.” While Maggie is the face of W4K, she points out she is not alone in her efforts. There is a team of

Adding to that, W4K was awarded a $122,000 grant from the women’s group, Impact 100 Metro Detroit. “The grant money helped us purchase property to build a facility where the children will always have a place to come and heal from the side effect of hair loss,” Maggie shared. “To me, that was our most successful effort on behalf of the program — validating the work we do, the difference we make throughout the state and allowing us to continue our mission.” The new wellness center will offer further program expansion and increase the capacity of children served.

anywhere in the world. We’re unique and address the appearance-related, emotional, social and psychological issues children have as they journey through their health challenge.” For Maggie, working with the kids is the most fulfilling part of what she does — seeing the positive impact is the most rewarding. “I watch these children grow up and see how it affects them when they are going through health challenges, and then later in life — after they’ve healed — seeing them become more sensitive to others, mentoring to others in the program, and even volunteering and fundraising,” she said. Unfortunately, Maggie sees about 25% of the kids lose their battle to their illness. With a somber tone, Maggie shared, “It’s the most challenging part of what I do — each child is special and leaves an imprint on my heart.” Maggie finds a good life-work balance with the support of her husband, Bobby — a REALTOR® at Keller Williams Great Lakes — who helps her in the community and serves on the advisory board. Also serving on the advisory board is Carol Lukity, Real Living Realty and Karla Orlando, Business Development Officer, Senior Vice President at Huntington Bank. To find out how to get involved or for more information, please visit www. wigs4kids.org or call 586-772-6656.

W4K receives calls from around the world, seeking to replicate the program. Maggie explained, “Children experiencing hair loss is not a local or national issue — it’s universal.” The group receives hair donations from 62 countries around the globe. “There’s nothing else like this organization
