MOMS
WHO MA KE I T
editor’s note
HAPPEN In honor of Mother’s Day, this special issue showcases some very special women and celebrates the dynamic bond that working moms share with their families, colleagues and clients. You’ll read about amazing women at various stages in their personal and professional lives, and in each story, you’ll follow a unique journey of a working mom who “Makes It Happen” on her own terms — and in a way that works best for her and her family. Shelley Pies, who began her real estate career in 2011 as a single mom of four children, shares how parenting prepared her for real estate and how her children — and her need to support them — motivated her to work hard without compromising her principles. Jaymie Paternoster, owner of House Call Home Inspection and mother of three, describes how she and her husband established their business in the midst of growing their family and how her faith and love for her family serve as the foundation of her company. Leila L. Hamka, a wife, mother of two and real estate agent of four years, reflects upon her upbringing in a very cultured Lebanese home and how she did not fully understand the value of how her mother raised her and her four siblings until she grew older. Now, as a mother to her own children, Leila has chosen to uphold many of the same traditions while also acclimating to today’s society, and she says that her children constantly incite her to lead by example. realproducersmag.com
Lynn DeJohn and Jen DeJohn, a mother and daughter who teamed up in real estate in 2014, emphasize how the success of their partnership stems from their shared values and practices. Lynn, who has been married for 57 years and has three children, nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter, entered the real estate industry in 1982 in order to help support her family. Jen shares how Lynn’s work ethic and drive always inspired her and how real estate has allowed her to achieve financial independence as a single mom, as well as enabled her to be there for her son and be an active participant in all of his endeavors, just as her mom was for her. Staci Kowalczyk, who has been a real estate agent for six years, describes her experiences raising and advocating for her son, Blake, who was diagnosed with Autism at age 2. Staci recounts how determined she was to “find a better way” for Blake to have the life he wanted, and how, as a result of her grit, determination, patience and love, she was able to help him build the life he wanted … and carve out a happy life and successful career for herself. The many different life journeys, perspectives, family situations and career paths in these stories magnify the diverse experiences of working mothers, yet, despite their many differences, at the heart of each of these stories is a mom abounding with the love and the motivation to “Make it Happen” for her family. Happy Mother’s Day to all of the moms who are making it happen! Jane K. Asher, Ph.D. Managing Editor of Real Producers of Wayne County jane.asher@realproducersmag.com Wayne County Real Producers • 7

A CAREER BUILT SINGLE-HANDEDLY WITHOUT ANY EXCUSES
SHELLEY PIES
By Robbyn Moore Photos by Stylish Detroit Photos taken at Toll Brothers Westridge Estates of Canton
16 • May 2021
@realproducers
Shelley Pies (pronounced “peez”) is a motivated real estate agent at eXp Realty - The Luxe Group who is passionate about her work and steadfast in her faith. She’s known for her unwavering client service and tough negotiation skills, and lives by the motto, “Don’t make an excuse. Make a way.”

With her natural “mom” instincts, Shelley watches over her clients just as she would a newborn baby. “Once a client chooses me to list their home, I let them know they can rest easy because they just hired me to lose sleep for them.” Shelley’s relentless commitment to her work and family came as a result of several life experiences: years as a wine sales representative, nearly 15 years as a mortgage lender and a divorce that abruptly ended her time as a stay-at-home mom. “With four children — from potty training to puberty — I knew that as a single mom, I could not go back to the daily structure of being gone 40-60 hours a week,” Shelley explained. “It was 2011, and while the economy was still feeling the effects from the housing collapse, I took a chance and decided to get my real estate license where I could have more control over my schedule and work around the needs of my children.” It was out of pure necessity that Shelley decided to pursue her career in real estate — an effort that was both calculated and aggressive. “My goal was to put my family first and let God work out the details,” she said. “Everyone in my life was strongly advising me to take the safe, guaranteed paycheck from banks and lenders that had offered me positions, but I couldn’t bear to be away from my kids at that time, so I pursued this route, and the rest is history.” realproducersmag.com
Wayne County Real Producers • 17
Nine years later, Shelley has a career volume of nearly $50 million. She has surpassed numerous personal and professional goals and is currently on track to earn ICON status with eXp Realty.
Her community of Christian friends has been a sphere of influence, helping to build her business. “Their trust in me is what paid my bills and fed my children,” Shelley said. “Even today, they are my primary source of referral business.”
As an only child of a single mother, Shelley watched her mother work long hours on the line at Ford Motor Company. Contrary to her own experiences, Shelley did not want her kids growing up in a latchkey-type home. She wanted a career that would ensure she could be available to her children when they needed her. Real estate was a perfect fit.
Shelley is most humbled and honored when friends or family members refer business to her and takes the responsibility very seriously. “I feel as though the referring person is as much my client as the referred client,” she said. “I love getting to know each member of a family that I represent; it’s a connection that makes this career especially satisfying for me.”
With her allegiance to her clients and family, Shelley built her business. She brilliantly manages her schedule so she can be fully present at home and at work — typically taking on as many clients as she can successfully manage at one time. “I believe every one of my clients deserve me at my absolute best,” she said. “If I feel I cannot balance my top priority — which is my family — while giving my buyers and sellers the full and present attention they rightfully deserve, I will refer the transaction out to another trusted agent. I will never let anything slip through the cracks because I was too busy or preoccupied with another all-consuming deal. My expectation of myself is to exceed the expectations of my clients.” Shelley considers real estate to be an industry of service rather than sales and said she never wants to “sell” a house to her clients. “I bring my research, knowledge and experience to the table to help make educated decisions,” she explained. “I do not ever allow my financial needs to influence what is best for my client. At the end of the day, it’s not about the sale: It’s about providing the best service I possibly can and doing what’s best for my client.” Nearly all of Shelley’s business can be traced back to her trusted relationships formed at church. 18 • May 2021
With children ranging from the ages of 11-24 years old, Shelley is clearly parenting for the long haul and said she wouldn’t want it any other way. “I always say parenting prepared me for real estate — nothing scares me because I raised four kids basically on my own for many years,” she said with a laugh. Shelley’s kids were motivators to earn a solid income and reminders to work hard without compromising her principles. “The saying ‘the hard thing and the right thing are usually the same thing’ is a great mental narrative for me, especially when things get tough.”
kids combined. “We are incredibly proud of everyone in our crew.” Over the years Shelley has relied on her strong faith to help balance the challenges of work and family. “I am fueled by my trust in God,” she shared. “My advice to other working moms is to trust in a higher power, put your children first and work hard.” In a season of life that could have crippled Shelley, she managed to build a very successful career. “Four little faces from diapers to driver’s ed depended on me, which launched me into a career that I love,” she concluded. “It can be done. It isn’t easy, but it is possible. I’m living proof.”
Shelley never used her family as an excuse for not getting things done. When her kids were young and her career was new, she would work an hour before her family woke up and then again all day while they were at school. After dinner, homework and bath time, Shelley would put her kids to bed and start her “second shift” of work. “They were, and always will be, my ‘why,’” she said. “Everything I do, I do for them.” Shelley was remarried in September 2019 to Brian Herbert, who is a great, tremendous support to both her and her children. Together, their blended families enjoy life with eight @realproducers

JAYMIE PATERNOSTER HOUSE CALL HOME INSPECTION partner spotlight
By Robbyn Moore Photos by Jermaine Buie with Perfect Light, LLC
A Business Built on Solid Communications and Integrity Jaymie Paternoster is a woman of deep faith who has a love for her family and a commitment to conduct and operate her business with absolute integrity and genuine communication. As the owner of House Call Home Inspection, Jaymie wears many hats to get the job done. While she is also an inspector, an inspector trainer, the communications director and the accountant, she will affectionately refer to herself as a software guru, a micromanager and social butterfly. She runs her business with her husband, Brandon, who is an incredible visionary and coach. Together they use their strengths and complement one another with divided responsibilities. “Brandon makes sure our team is successful and accountable,” Jaymie shared. “He keeps us educated and manages our services and equipment while I am passionate about training our home inspectors in technology and the importance of communication.” Jaymie’s journey to where she is today is amazing. She has an associate’s degree in architectural 20 • May 2021
technology and a bachelor’s degree in facility management. After she landed her first job as a facility designer in Manhattan, New York, she decided to attend graduate school at New York University where she earned her master’s degree in speech and interpersonal communication. In 2006 — one year after Hurricane Katrina — there was a massive need for building renovations in New Orleans. With the abundance of work in her industry, Jaymie decided to move south to continue the pursuit of her career. After @realproducers
Because home inspections are a crucial part of the purchase and clients rely on inspection companies for valuable information during the decision-making process, Jaymie believes the experience doesn’t need to be scary or overwhelming. “We conduct all our services with joy and enthusiasm,” Jaymie said. “We believe that 50% of our job is to inform clients about safety issues and maintenance, and the other 50% is to communicate that information in a way that our clients understand.”
years of dating long-distance, Brandon decided to join Jaymie in New Orleans as well. It was there they established the foundation for their relationship. They found a common leadership role within their church and a shared vision for their future as a couple and as business partners. The two started a photo booth company and immediately became hooked on entrepreneurship. “What started out as a hobby for some extra ‘fun’ money quickly turned to the realization of how well we worked together,” Jaymie recalled. “After that, we really started to build our business and our confidence as business owners.” After Jaymie became a licensed home inspector in 2010, she began working with House Call as a home inspector. “I was hired by the owner in New Orleans,” Jaymie said. “We were a team of 10, and it really felt like family.” After three years of learning the business, Jaymie and her husband sold their photo booth business and purchased a House Call franchise to be set up in Indiana to be closer to Jaymie’s hometown. This was the first franchise for the company to open north of the Mississippi. Their business was growing and so was their family — while all this was happening, the couple learned they would soon be parents. Within a year, Jaymie was awarded “Entrepreneur of the Year” by the local Woman’s Council of REALTORS®. In 2018, Jaymie launched House Call in the Detroit area. “This is where my husband is from and we truly realproducersmag.com
missed living in a larger city,” Jaymie said. “We love building a business by building genuine relationships — Detroit is a great city to make that happen!” During the first two years in Detroit, the company doubled their business. “Best of all, after 10 years in the industry our work is still fun and rewarding,” she said. The team focus is centered around several basic principles that have made them successful: empowering their clients with knowledge and working with integrity while creating peace-of-mind through education; creating an unparalleled environment that attracts top talent and fun partners; prioritizing God, family and business — in that order; sharing daily gratitude and thanksgiving; encouraging health in spirit, mind and body in an energized environment; accountability in each other’s families, education and personal growth; and following the Golden Rule through collaboration, client service and partner relationships. The company offers almost any service a person would need to know regarding how their home functions. “Small changes in our industry will always ruffle a few feathers or make most business owners stand up a little straighter,” Jaymie explained. “But you know how we thrive; communication, friendly demeanor, a humble disposition and ongoing availability to our clients — we don’t complicate it.”
To empower their clients, Jaymie’s teams are trained to teach their clients what they know, so they feel confident and educated to make the best decisions possible. “When we know something, we educate our clients, so they can move forward with knowledge and confidence,” Jaymie shared. “Isn’t that why we were created? To help others?” Jaymie and her husband, Brandon, have been married for 10 years and have three children — Isaiah, 6, Josephine, 3, and Eve, 2 months. As a family, they enjoy everything outdoors: camping, campfires, walks in the woods and playing in the water. House Call is a franchise based in New Orleans and offers traditional home inspections, termite inspections, sewer scope, radon testing, air quality and mold testing, thermal imaging, and water lead and bacteria testing. Jaymie has received Strategic Partner of the Year from LakePointe Women’s Council of REALTORS®, Volunteer of the Year from Grosse Pointe Board of REALTORS®, Franchise of the Year from the corporate office of House Call and Affiliate Regent from the Macomb chapter of the Grosse Pointe Board of REALTORS®. “If I can pour positivity into people’s lives, have a solid marriage, raise kind children and sleep with a good conscience at night, then I’ve been successful,” Jaymie concluded.

Hamka Leila L.
FINDING RHYTHM IN HER ROLES
agent spotlight By Robbyn Moore Photos taken at Cranbrook Custom Homes Montcaret in Northville
Although born and raised in Dearborn, Michigan, Leila L. Hamka grew up in a very cultured Lebanese home. Her mother and father emigrated from Lebanon to the United States in the mid-70s, fleeing the civil war. Leila’s mother was very proud of the family’s heritage and insisted on keeping habits and traditions alive in their home. As a result, Leila was given the opportunity to acclimate in a modern society while still benefiting from the elements of her legacy. “When I was younger, I did not fully understand the value of how my mother raised us,” Leila said. “However, as I grew older, I learned to really appreciate her sacrifices and understood that she did her best to guide us in an exemplary way. Now, as a mother to my own children, I have also chosen to uphold a lot of the same traditions in my home while also maintaining modernity and acclimation to today’s society.”

As the second oldest of five children, Leila often helped her parents with family obligations. Prior to getting into real estate, Leila’s father traveled for work while her mother worked as a seamstress and housewife. Watching her parents make sacrifices for the family influenced @realproducers

Leila to work hard at school and in her profession. She earned a bachelor’s degree in biology and psychology, and a master’s degree in teaching from the University of Michigan - Dearborn, graduating cum laude with both degrees. She went on to teach day and night classes in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, business communications and interpersonal skills at Dorsey Schools. During this time, Leila’s father had become a real estate agent and asked if Leila could watch over the real estate business for about a month while he took a small trip overseas to visit his siblings and relatives. While helping at the office, Leila realized how much she enjoyed meeting new people every day and the exciting opportunities that came with real estate. With her newfound enthusiasm and a nudge from her father, Leila received her real estate license in 2017. As a wife and mother of two children, Leila wanted to find the right rhythm between work and home, and therefore, decided to stop teaching and fully focus her efforts on real estate. “Balancing motherhood, a family and a successful career is not an easy task,” Leila shared. “It can be challenging to not feel guilty about my home obligations when I am busy with professional commitments. It’s a work in progress for sure, but I know my children are watching and that motivates me to constantly strive toward being the best version of myself.” Leila added, “My kids are a constant reminder for me to lead by example; it is important to me that my children grasp the ideologies that I believe in.” Leila is a real estate agent and office manager at Hometown Group Real Estate, a brokerage her father launched in 1996.
During her first year in the business, Leila was awarded Rookie of the Year, and in 2019, she won a seat on the Dearborn Area Board of REALTORS®, a position she was appointed to by her peers. Currently, Leila is very passionate about modernizing and growing her business. “I would love to see our brokerage flourish to a higher level while maintaining a consistent level of success for all the agents who work here,” she explained. “I don’t necessarily strive for a very large brokerage, but rather, I would love one that helps to embrace intimate relationships and attract people who want to feel appreciated and needed.” Looking ahead, Leila wants to build a team of 10-15 people who encourage a culture of growth through educational, instructional and mental practices. “I hope to lead others to find fulfillment and mindfulness in practicing real estate,” she said. “I believe in celebrating the small achievements rather than just looking at the sales figures and the number of closings each week. To me, success is found in contentment, which can be discovered in many things: connecting with a new client, learning a new marketing skill or simply keeping a smooth rhythm Photo by Ali Moussa between work and family life.” Leila and her husband Ali — who is the principal at Walled Lake Western High School — have been married for 15 years and, together, they have two children: Hannah, 12, and Hydar, 9. As a family, they love staying in for movie nights or traveling to northern Michigan to enjoy biking, walking and all things active. As a working mother, Leila offered simple advice to other working moms: “It’s okay to rely on others for help; in fact, I encourage it,” she suggested. “Without the reliance on others, it is very difficult to coordinate equal time for everything — even time for yourself. The key to family/work lifestyle is finding the right rhythm and knowing when you will need to rely on others for help at home or at the office.”

Along with her father’s patience and compassion, Leila also conveyed how her mother’s strict and structured upbringing influenced who she is today. “Being a hardworking mother means enriching the lives of their kids through culture and faith, and helping them to aspire for great things as they get older, all the while maintaining their connectedness to family.” Education and independence were encouraged and celebrated by Leila’s parents, and as a result, helped identify Leila’s self-worth. “In all my doings, I try my best to remain grounded and humble,” she said. “Having self-worth allows me to never shy away from asking for help when needed because I try to show value in others as I expect it for myself.” This intangible strength has translated into excellent communication skills. Leila’s ability to quickly respond to emails, text messages and phone calls has become a hallmark among her clients, coordinating agents, lenders and colleagues. “In the end, we all want the same thing: to get to that closing table and ensure our clients had a great experience.” Her kindheartedness has led to lifelong friendships with other real estate agents. “Some of my dearest friendships were formed at the closing table,” she said. Additionally, some of Leila’s greatest business rewards come from seeing the excitement on her clients’ faces after they’ve purchased a home when they thought it would

never be possible. “This is very specific to single moms,” Leila said. “I love to see the relief on their face during the closing.” Leila is a very loyal, self-aware woman who is humbled by her life experiences. “I know what it means to work hard,” she said. “I use that knowledge as a tool for my daily mental alignment. I also take my role as mother, wife, sister, daughter and friend very seriously, so to find my rhythm in all those roles, I have had to slow down and be intentional with my daily choices — it’s a continuous work in progress.”

Lynn DeJohn & Jen DeJohn A Winning Mother-Daughter Teamship dynamic duo By Jane K. Asher, Ph.D. Photos by Stylish Detroit
In 1982, Lynn DeJohn was a dental hygienist looking for a more lucrative career opportunity. At the time, she and her husband, Paul, were financially preparing to send their two oldest children to college at the same time as well as shelling out a lot of money to fund their youngest daughter’s burgeoning career as a competitive figure skater. Paul had been working as a part-time real estate agent to supplement their income, so, without too much thought, Lynn decided to join him in the industry. “I went to real estate school at night while still working two dental jobs and taking care of my family,” Lynn said. “Needless to say, I was literally falling asleep in my soup!” After receiving her license, Lynn made a smooth transition into the industry where she was fortunate to be mentored by her wonderful first broker, Darlene Shemanski. Lynn and Paul worked together for several years, and she hoped to form a family team at some point in the future. “Probably back in the 90s, I asked my older daughter if she would like to join me, but she wasn’t interested. So, when I learned that my younger daughter Jen was studying for her license, there was no hesitation that we’d become a team,” Lynn said. “We had spent many hours and trips together over her skating career — I drove her to all her competitions, tried to make sure all the off-ice 28 • May 2021

things went well and was, I think, her biggest fan. … It just seemed fitting that we’d continue our ‘teamship,’ and she would offer her support to me.” In 2013, Jen DeJohn, who had spent 25 years coaching competitive figure skating and hockey skating and 10 years as the USA Hockey Arena Program Director, was battling recurring low back and foot injuries that made “living in skates 24/7” increasingly difficult, both physically and mentally. She was also recently divorced and wanted a career that enabled her to better provide for herself and her son yet still afforded her the flexibility of self-employment. “While I was coaching and directing full-time at the arena, I actually started the licensing process in secret by completing the course online in the wee hours of the night,” Jen said. “I always knew I could join my mom in the business. The offer was always there, but I wanted to see for myself if real estate was something that interested me enough to make it my second career — hence my secrecy out of the gate.” Jen, who went from training full-time as a competitive skater to coaching full-time to pay for her first car and college, says that it was difficult to hang up her skates and step away from the profession that had encompassed her life since childhood. However, after getting licensed and shadowing her mom on a few appointments, Jen realized how much she enjoyed the business and how well her problem-solving, organizational and people skills transferred from skating to real estate. More so, both Jen and Lynn discovered that their “teamship” on the ice provided them a solid foundation for building a productive, rewarding business partnership in real estate. “What can I say? I’ve been trained by one of the best in the business!” Jen said. Established in 2014, Team DeJohn at RE/MAX Classic - Plymouth has proven to be a winning combination. realproducersmag.com
“We are a great blend of ‘old school’ and the new,” Lynn said. “When we first started working together, I told clients that I was teaching Jen long-standing best practices and she’s constantly teaching me all the technology and sharing her valuable viewpoint as the younger member of our team — we are a fine blend of experience and expertise.” Throughout her 38 years in the business, Lynn has sold over $115 million worth of real estate and distinguished herself with countless RE/MAX awards. As a team, Lynn and Jen’s career volume is over $44 million, and their trophy shelf includes many awards and titles, including Hour Detroit Real Estate All-Star in 2019 and 2020, RE/MAX 100% Club from 2015-2018 and RE/MAX Platinum Club in 2019. In 2021, Jen — the skilled “techie” responsible for the team’s social media presence — earned the RE/MAX Classic Technology Award as well as gained recognition from RE/MAX of Southeastern Michigan for mastering insight posts on a new online platform. Lynn and Jen attribute the success of their partnership to their shared values and practices: They are detail-oriented individuals who regularly communicate and collaborate with one another and with their clients, they genuinely care about their clients and they both enjoy seeing their buyers and sellers achieve their goals. With regard to their differences, Lynn says that sometimes she gets stuck in the wrong headspace, so she is thankful for Jen’s positive attitude and ability to redirect her. Jen jokes about their different filing habits: “My mom kills trees by printing everything; I try
to save trees by keeping electronic records as much as possible.” On a more serious note, Jen deeply respects and admires her mother and appreciates everything she has done for their family. “In high school, I watched my mom become the main wage earner for our family after my dad had his first debilitating back injury,” Jen said. “Her drive, organization at work and at home, and her ability to stay active in the lives of all her family members was always something I wanted to emulate as an adult.” As a single mom, Jen has learned how important it is to ask for help. “I wanted to do all and be all, but it’s really not possible without a village,” she said. “I don’t know what I’d do without my family.” Jen’s 17-year-old son, Nate, is a junior at Salem High School and a former competitive musician. He spends most of his free time working in the electrical subgroup of the Lightning Robotics team and plans to study electrical and/or mechanical engineering in college. Jen’s significant other, Steve, is a professional photographer. They all enjoy spending time with their new puppy, robotics, cars, music, boating on Hamlin Lake and camping in Ludington. Lynn and Paul have been married for 57 years and have three adult children, nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Their son Paul is a nurse in Ohio, and their older daughter Debbie is a special education teacher in Plymouth-Canton Schools. Due to health issues, Lynn and Paul had to retire from their favorite hobby — fly-fishing — but they still enjoy many getaways to Ludington in their camper, visits to Ohio to see Paul and his family and trips to Clearwater, Florida, to visit extended family. “We are a close-knit family, and my family means everything to me,” Lynn said. “It has been so fulfilling to see Jen become financially independent and purchase her home as a result of our partnership,” Lynn said. “It also is rewarding to know that when I retire or slow down, she will be able to step into the business I created and carry it on to support herself and her son.”
WE ARE A GREAT BLEND OF ‘OLD SCHOOL’ AND THE NEW.
Of course, Jen is equally thankful that real estate has facilitated her financial independence and homeownership, as well as enabled her to be there for her son and be an active participant in all of his endeavors, just as her mom was for her. Above all else, the DeJohn “teamship” has imparted Jen and Lynn with the intangible blessing of precious time with one another. “What’s the one thing people regret when they look back? They want more time doing what they enjoy or being with the people most important to them,” Jen said. “I get both — I know I’ll never regret that.” 30 • May 2021

Kowalczyk A REAL ESTATE CAREER PRIMED THROUGH LIFE LESSONS
32 • May 2021
@realproducers
S
taci Kowalczyk’s optimistic outlook on life is what has made her successful. She intentionally used her hardships and sacrifices as tools to build a career and savored moments of greatness as inspirations to make a difference. She turned life events into opportunities to become a tough negotiator, a compassionate professional and a top-producing agent.
As a teenager, Staci traveled around the United States playing softball. “Some of my fondest memories were made during those years on the field. I loved being a pitcher and playing on a team,” she said. “My dad was one of the coaches and instilled hard work and dedication, creating my strong work ethic and being a team player. It was a great life experience that I will always treasure.” Staci went on to attend college at Central Michigan University. While there, she had the opportunity to work as an intern in the Disney College Program. During that time, she learned the secret “magic” to Disney’s customer service. Today, Staci continues to draw upon that knowledge in her real estate work. “I sprinkle kindness
and knowledge into each client experience and transaction,” she said with a wink. “Everyone deserves the best possible experience, especially if it has to do with personal investments.” Growing up, Staci’s parents were successful entrepreneurs and insisted that the family help with the maintenance on their investment properties. “Through endless hard work and tons of painting from myself and my sisters, Jennifer and Samantha, we helped my parents work on rental homes,” Staci explained. “It was never an option; it was expected. Whether we were painting, patching a roof, putting in new cupboards, hauling out garbage or tearing out carpeting, we all helped and worked together to get the job done. I’m thankful for those days because it made me who I am today.” Staci continued, “Real estate has always been in my blood. It influenced me and developed my desire to someday become a real estate agent.” While Staci had the dreams, drive and knowledge to work in real estate, unforeseen life events led her down a path that looked much different than the one she had originally envisioned. In 2000, Staci’s son Blake was diagnosed with Autism at age 2. One
of the best doctors in the country, a University of Michigan Autism expert at the time, diagnosed that Blake would never talk, read or write. He recommended to Staci and Blake’s dad that they should not waste their time or money on therapies and to simply just love their son, and keep him in special education. Furthermore, they were told that Blake would live with them for the rest of his life. With grit and determination, tons of love, patience and tears, Blake’s parents found therapies and support to develop Blake’s verbal and social skills, and fine and gross motor capabilities. “I’m pretty sure my intense determination to never give up or quit advocating during Blake’s school years for a free and appropriate public education under the state and federal law was a training ground for future real estate negotiations,” Staci said. “I worked tirelessly to be an advocate — not only for my son but for many others who also were in search of solutions.” At the time, Staci said she had difficulty finding professionals who were familiar with the complexity of Autism or how to manage it. “Other than the movie ‘Rain Man,’ nobody understood the disability. Therefore, I had to scour the country looking for alternative therapies and like-minded support groups,” she explained. The dynamics of learning about something very few people understood were stressful to Staci, but she forged ahead with a knowledge-is-power mentality.

Family Speech, Sensory Integration & Learning Center. Additionally, Staci launched and co-hosted the radio show “My Great Kid” from 2009-2012, which aired on WAAM Talk Radio in Ann Arbor and Clear Channel Radio. Furthermore, Staci helped co-found and manage The Liberty Kids, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) that raised $50,000 in scholarships, which were given to children with Autism and other related disorders. “Just because life doesn’t go as you may have planned or expected, it doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world,” Staci shared. “I am stronger today because of these obstacles.” Six years ago, Staci earned her real estate license, and today, she is with Moving The Mitten Real Estate Group. She has closed more than 200 transactions, along with an impressive career volume of over $52 million in sales. She is a Master Certified Negotiation Expert and one of her brokerage’s top producers. “Imagine being young parents in your 20s when the internet was a foreign research tool,” Staci said. “Because this was so personal, I became an expert and learned very quickly that no one cares or fights harder about your child than you.” Because of Staci’s relentless efforts, Blake never relied on medications and successfully attended school in a regular classroom where he learned to read, write and speak. “To this day, it touches my heart when I see the friends he has made over the years at school and in theater,” she shared. Today, at age 22, he is very social and has a job at The Henry Ford Museum in guest services. He loves painting, building LEGOs and enjoys participating in local theater. “I never accepted the limitations that he was given,” she said. “I was determined to find a better way for my son to have a life he wanted, not what was going to be decided by others. And I did.” As a result of her dedicated work, Staci became a special education pioneer for Michigan special needs families. She co-founded numerous groups that raised awareness and support for Autism, including My Great Kid, LLC and Great Expectations 34 • May 2021
“One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is being trusted with some of the biggest life decisions a couple, a family or single person can make,” Staci said. “There are so many different variables that bring people to sell or purchase a home. Most of the time it’s an occasion filled with excitement; however, a transaction can also be a result of a divorce or death, and that requires a great deal of compassion.” Regardless of the circumstances that bring Staci’s clients to her, she is unyielding with her empathy and unshakable with her consistent communication and availability.
She is affectionately known in the real estate world as the Sunshine Bulldog. While she has a cheery disposition and sweet demeanor, she is also fearless when it comes to contract negotiations. “I can go head-to-head with the best of them,” Staci said. “I will get the greatest deal I can for my clients and still maintain solid relationships with everyone in the transaction.” Staci also found personal happiness and love later in life with her boyfriend John. “He’s my love and my best friend,” Staci said. “John and Blake are good friends, and that means the world to me. We all make each other happy with lots of laughter, great conversations and spend quality time together. Life is good; I keep waiting to wake up from this wonderful dream.” “Despite some ups and downs in my life, everything has worked out better than I ever imagined,” Staci said. “I always wanted to make my real estate dreams come true, and I wasn’t going to let anything get in the way of that happening. I can happily say it’s no longer a dream: it’s a reality.”
However, do not mistake Staci’s kindness for weakness. @realproducers
