editor’s note

Hats Off to the

2021 RPOC BEST-IN-CLASS HONOREES!

School’s out for summer, and we’re really excited to close out the school year by celebrating Oakland County’s best and brightest young real estate professionals of 2021!

They all distinguish themselves in different ways but are all distinctly impressive, and that’s why we are so proud to pay them tribute.

The BEST-IN-CLASS honorees featured in this first-of-its-kind special issue embody the new school of real estate. Equipped with drive, talent, mad technology skills and passion, these individuals, all of whom are 35 or younger, are eager to learn, serve, lead and do good in the industry: Their personal and professional investment in real estate — their commitment to clients and colleagues — showcases their value and assures us that the future of the industry is in good hands.

I want to thank everyone who took time out of their busy schedules to submit nominations: Your promising, young colleagues admire you, value your ongoing support, and appreciate your kindness and public recognition. I also want to thank Andy Schwartz of Stylish Detroit for doing an amazing job with all the photos: This issue entailed a lot of work and extra planning, and you totally crushed it.

Our search for the BEST-IN-CLASS 2021 line-up began in December with several calls for nominations, followed by an application deadline in February. As we reviewed the many applications, we took a variety of factors into consideration, including personal character, commitment to professional development, proven success, professional achievement, leadership capability, dedication to clients, and service to the industry and community.

Finally, and most importantly, thank you to each of our BEST-IN-CLASS honorees for participating in this special issue, which I hope transpires into an annual endeavor. Your passion for real estate is remarkable, and your excitement for the future is inspiring. We can’t wait to see you grow and shape your professional paths … and, hopefully, if you’re not there already, join the ranks of Oakland County’s Top 500.

The individuals we selected to stand in this elite class are hustlers and go-getters and innovators. They exhibit honor and humility and empathy and grit. They have unique voices, uplifting spirits, lofty dreams, interesting hobbies and great jokes.

Innovating and Inspiring a New Standard of Luxury building the client’s dream home,” said Vice President of Marketing Melissa Cervin. “This collaboration serves to limit budget overages and lower costs overall, all while ensuring delivery on time.” In addition to setting and meeting clients’ expectations and ensuring transparency throughout their homebuilding journey, Cranbrook’s 11-step design-build process gives clients the opportunity to meet with renowned designer and Cranbrook Custom Homes Vice President Stephen McKay, who is a Certified Green Professional, LEED AP and Associate AIA. “Stephen takes his time to understand how the client intends to live in their home, thus designing a custom home around their lifestyle and around the land upon which the home will be built,” Melissa said. Clients mainly interact with the sales and construction managers and designer throughout the design-build process, but, as Melissa points out, Cranbrook’s 40+ dedicated team members all play an integral role in

As a 2021 Best-in-Class honoree, what are your words of wisdom for the next generation of real estate agents?

Why did you decide to get into real estate?

Success takes time — it doesn’t happen overnight. The more you put into this business, the more you will get out of it. Build those connections everywhere you go. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Most importantly, stay positive and don’t give up.

A family friend who has been a top-producing agent for 30 years said I reminded her of herself when she was younger and that I should give it a try. I’m so glad I did! What does success mean to you?

Success to me is doing what you love and being authentic while you do it.

In this business, it’s so easy to let things affect you. When I start to get to that place, I stop, take a deep breath and say, “Life could be a lot worse.” Yoga really helps.

Age: 31 Number of Years in Real Estate: 3 Why did you decide to get into real estate?

I reluctantly got my license at the suggestion of a prior mentor — so grateful for that nudge and so happy I took the leap of faith! What are you most excited about in your life right now?

Watching my kids grow up — being a dad and husband are two of my favorite things. I am also super excited about my partnership with eXp and the growth plan I have in place for my business. Big things planned for 2021! What do you do to stay grounded/centered/sane?

Daily exercise, meditation, enough water and a healthy diet. Hanging with my family and friends, disconnecting for movie nights and/or reading at home.

They constantly show me love and shower me with referrals, and I am so grateful for their support. As a 2021 Best-in-Class honoree, what are your words of wisdom for the next generation of real estate agents?

Listen to what your client wants and provide that. It’s not about what you want. I experienced quite a few challenges growing up. I was actively addicted to drugs and alcohol as a teenager and spent years in and out of treatment programs. I got sober on Sept. 7, 2009, at 20 years old and have been on a journey of recovery and learning about myself and the world ever since. I am still sober to this day! Many of my very close friends passed away, and I miss them quite a bit. Their passing motivated me to live my life to the absolute fullest — to honor them, their friendship and their passing. It’s easy to be grateful nowadays when I look back on and compare it to what I previously experienced. I went from living on a couch and being actively addicted at 19, with only a few very strained relationships remaining, to living in my dream home with a beautiful wife, two kids and a life I enjoy and am proud of at 31. So much pain, growth, sacrifice and faith to get here and so excited about where life is headed. I am truly grateful! Who has helped you get where you are today?

My wife, Nicole, and our kids, Gracie and Myla. It would be so much more difficult to be doing the stuff I am doing if my wife wasn’t so supportive of my goals and dreams — so realproducersmag.com

McKENZIE Age: 26 Number of Years in Real Estate: 2 Why did you decide to get into real estate?

I have been exposed to the real estate world for as long as I can remember. I used to help my grandparents with their fixer-uppers and rentals when I was younger and even went to my first closing around age 4. It has always been an interest of mine, but it really got brought to my attention when I was going into my second year of college and a family friend thought it would be a good career choice for me. After I graduated and had a couple of different jobs — all of which never really gave me the satisfaction I needed but did give me the confidence for the next step — we talked again, and I decided to make the leap. Now here I am working at Real Estate One. Thanks, Abby!

What do you do to stay grounded/ centered/sane?

I try and have fun in everything I do and see the light in it. I remember why I chose this job, and whenever I am feeling like I am falling short, I then, shortly after, have my busiest times. I also go for a run or walk, pray and always keep the wine stocked. Who has helped you get where you are today?

Cliché, I know, but my family and my friends. They are all so important to me. Each of them has helped me in their own special way. It is the little things that really go a long way for me. Of course, my husband as well — that pretty much goes without saying. I keep him on his toes every day, and he still sticks around to my surprise. We have been together for almost 10 years; he is my rock through it all.

Age: 35 Number of Years in Real Estate: 4 Why did you decide to get into real estate?

Real Estate One has been a part of my life since I was born. My great-grandfather founded Elsea Realty, which later formed Real Estate One in 1929. My grandfather worked for him and further grew the business; today, my dad and uncle — third-generation — own and operate the Real Estate One Family of Companies. What do you do to stay grounded/centered/sane?

I travel all over the country to fish the many beautiful saltwater estuaries between North Carolina and Texas — this is a lifelong passion that most certainly keeps me sane! How did your challenges shape who you are today?

My parents instilled a strong work ethic in my brother and me from a very young age. I had my first job when I was in sixth grade. We worked all throughout high school, started our own business in college, etc. This was not the norm in the community that I grew up in or amongst my peers but

28 • June 2021

helped mold the work ethic that I believe has attributed to success in my adult life. What drives or motivates you?

Career and workwise, a lot of what motivates me is to achieve “success” based on what success means to me. Beyond that, I am a work-hard, playhard person; so, to a certain extent, I “work to live,” and so much of what drives me is not related to my work life. Enjoying life with family and friends, and, most importantly, experiencing as much of God’s creation as possible is a huge motivator for me. Who has helped you get where you are today?

My mom Judy, dad Stuart, brother Evan and my wife Sarah. As a 2021 Best-in-Class honoree, what are your words of wisdom for the next generation of real estate agents?

Anybody can be successful selling real estate: You don’t have to try to become what you see on TV or what you think a stereotypical real estate agent is. I want them to have the absolute best childhood and life that I am able to provide for them. I love that they see their mom as someone who is out working very hard for them, both at work and at home. Who has helped you get where you are today?

My husband is one heck of a role model. He is the hardest working, most generous person I have ever met. Without his love, support and guidance, I would not have the career that I do today.

Why did you decide to get into real estate?

Real estate has always been an interest of mine. Since purchasing my first property at 21 right after graduating from undergraduate school, I seemed to be moving or building a house every year or so until I decided to help other people buy, sell and build — and to settle my family in one spot. Since becoming an agent, I have only purchased one property and built another. I really love real estate! What does success mean to you?

To me, success in real estate is building a well-balanced business where family time is a top priority. I do not measure my success in units or gross commissions but rather in the relationships I nurture and grow throughout the year.

As a 2021 Best-in-Class honoree, what are your words of wisdom for the next generation of real estate agents?

Never put limitations on yourself. You can have it all. You do not have to sacrifice homelife for worklife or vice versa. Balance is the key to success. FAST FACTS & FAVORITES Bucket list item?

I love real estate — the excitement of the entire process, from house-hunting to closing. From the moment I purchased my first home, I have always wanted to get into real estate, and I finally felt determined enough to do it.

Who has helped you get where you are today?

My husband Brandon, my parents and my mentor in real estate, Dana Shook. As a 2021 Best-in-Class honoree, what are your words of wisdom for the next generation of real estate agents?

Kindness and respect go a long way. We are all in this together!

What does success mean to you?

To me, success means feeling happy with what you’re doing and being respected while you do it, as well as achieving goals that you set for yourself. What do you do to stay grounded/centered/sane?

I also work as a nurse, and when I see people who are going through certain things in their life, I really realize how lucky I am and how fortunate I am to be where I am in life. When are you at your best?

HOTCHKISS Age: 32 Number of Years in Real Estate: 8 Why did you decide to get into real estate?

My mother has been selling real estate for 26 years — the combination of her success and my love for helping people fulfill their dreams of homeownership is the main reason I chose real estate as a career. After deciding to move on from racing Motocross, I felt I needed to do something that allowed me to control my destiny. I knew if I worked hard, I would be successful.

How did your challenges shape who you are today?

You cannot learn without failure. Keeping a positive “never-quit” mindset is a must, and that is what has helped me most. Who has helped you get where you are today?

My mother and father — their hard work, undying love and priceless teachings formed me into the person I am today! As a 2021 Best-in-Class honoree, what are your words of wisdom for the next generation of real estate agents?

Zack Jones MARK Z Real Estate Experts - eXp Realty Age: 29 Number of Years in Real Estate: 5 Why did you decide to get into real estate?

I wanted to help people find their dream home and help others achieve their dreams of homeownership when they didn’t think it was possible. It has grown into using real estate to create passive income. Leveraging real estate is one way to gain wealth. What does success mean to you?

I have learned through helping others that if you love what you are doing, you will be successful. I feel that money does not always equate to success. Instead of focusing on the money 100% of the time, I am more interested in seeing who I can help. What are you most excited about in your life right now?

Outside of my real estate business, I have created a way to generate passive income through rental properties. I just purchased my second and will have a third soon — with no cash out of pocket. I will be looking for properties out of state to use as an Airbnb investment. Also through eXp Realty, I have been able to help so many agents create a stronger business. Seeing them take off has been extremely exciting and rewarding. What do you do to stay grounded/ centered/sane?

I love being able to come home to my girlfriend Morgan and our puppy Ozzy. Morgan is way more relaxed 38 • June 2021

than me, so she knows how to keep me from going crazy and helps me stay grounded.

How did your challenges shape who you are today?

Starting out in real estate was a challenge itself. 80% of first-year agents fail. When I started, I had very minimal personal funds and a huge commute to my team and office every day. This made me determined to succeed — I didn’t let the thought of failure scare me away from doing what I wanted to do. Who has helped you get where you are today?

Age: 33 Number of Years in Real Estate: 9 Why did you decide to get into real estate?

Honestly, because it was in front of me at the time. I stumbled across Oakland University’s Career Counseling Center in 2012. I was new to Michigan and deciding between getting a

second degree in engineering, going to law school or becoming a teacher. Instead, I decided to give real estate a try. It completely stuck, and I found a perfect fit wherein I was able to flex the teaching muscle by previously being the office educator for my brokerage and advising my co-workers on their career goals, and am now able to lead the @properties Birmingham office. What are you most excited about in your life right now?

My family. I love to work, but I also love to live. Having three kids age 4 and under and a kickass wife has brought a whole new meaning and purpose to why I strive for success and growth in the real estate industry. What do you do to stay grounded/centered/sane?

That’s the hardest part of the job — the off switch! Having boundaries and accountability are key elements to control the craziness that comes with a profession in real estate. Designating time to pour into my family and focusing on them allows me to be my best, both at home and in the office. I also find the time I spend on the soccer field to be a therapeutic release.

life,” I owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to Sarah, my wife. She helped me to not just stay on track but also was a constant support system. Additionally, I credit my previous brokerage, Hall & Hunter, REALTORS®. The incredible family there welcomed me and raised me in the real estate industry. As a 2021 Best-in-Class honoree, what are your words of wisdom for the next generation of real estate agents?

I once had a mentor explain and break it down this way, and I’ve found it to be so true: The first year sucks. Even if it’s great, it still is difficult. Around year three is when you start to understand the business. Really, year five is when things come into focus: You know your strengths, weaknesses, patterns and where your strengths lie. Even still, the real estate sector is the long game. Run the marathon, not the sprint. FAST FACTS & FAVORITES Bucket list item? Drive the

I feel that the challenges I unintentionally faced allowed me to endure the initial learning curve that comes with entering the real estate sector. Coming into the business with no connections, no market knowledge, no geographic knowledge and with my back against a wall … These are the reasons I was forced into learning and success. I said “yes” to every opportunity and soaked up knowledge and experience at every turn.

Max Broock, REALTORS® Age: 29 Number of Years in Real Estate: 7 Why did you decide to get into real estate?

I was fortunate to discover my passion for real estate at a very young age. I remember looking at houses with my parents when I was 13 and absolutely loving every minute of it. I worked as a receptionist at CENTURY 21 Town & Country as soon as I legally could work. Every summer in college I interned at a new real estate company to continue to learn about different brokerages. Ultimately, my desire to build relationships and problem-solve is what I love about being in real estate. More recently, I have discovered that I really admire the architecture and design aspects of real estate. What are you most excited about in your life right now?

The realization that this is just the beginning! 2020 has opened my eyes to the endless opportunities realproducersmag.com

that are out there. From a business perspective, I have a few business plan/marketing ideas that are new and pushing me out of my comfort zone. I am really excited to dive into a leadership role as president of Women’s Council of REALTORS® Birmingham-Bloomfield Network. From a personal perspective, I am thrilled about some of the places I am crossing off my travel bucket list. I’m also really, really, really excited to learn how to play piano! Who has helped you get where you are today?

My mom has been my inspiration, and she continues to be my #1 cheerleader. I probably talk to her five times a day; somehow she just always knows the right thing to say, even if I don’t want to hear it. She raised three kids, consistently nationally ranked in top sales in the pharmaceutical field in the 90s-2000s and never missed a dance performance of mine. best-in-class honoree Photo by Stylish Detroit

Age: 28 Number of Years in Real Estate: 3

As a 2021 Best-in-Class honoree, what are your words of wisdom for the next generation of real estate agents?

Why did you decide to get into real estate?

Starting out in this business is not easy. People will tell you it’s crazy to dive in headfirst without a backup plan — and maybe it is. They will throw percentages and timelines at you, such as “94% of real estate agents quit their first year,” or “it will take at least a year to make any money in this business.” While some of these instances may be somewhat accurate, do not let them get to your head. Do not give up or waver from the goals you wanted to achieve when you first decided to get into this business. Set your goals and a plan to reach them, work really hard to follow that plan and I guarantee you will find success.

I grew up learning and understanding real estate. Being taken to different developments and construction sites was a part of my childhood because my dad is a developer. It was what we did on the way home from dinner as a family or out on a drive getting ice cream. My dad started his own business in development right out of college, and his passion for it was infectious and inspiring. This fact led me to have summer jobs in real estate sales offices and to speak to clients at a young age. I was learning how to engage with clients and build strong relationships and connections. I was initiating cold calls to gain business for the developments, and I was learning how to problem-solve when everything didn’t go as planned, which happens a lot in this business.

FAST FACTS & FAVORITES Bucket list item? Scuba dive

My family, my planner How did your challenges shape who you are today?

I have lived a blessed life and consider the challenges in my past as learning experiences that have helped me become more worldly. It has not always been so easy to pay bills or stand up for things you believe in, especially in the workplace. Even though those times in my past were difficult, I am thankful for them now because I know I’ll be able to handle anything that comes my way.

Why did you decide to get into real estate?

Keep. Going. Some days you will feel like you didn’t accomplish anything, and some days you will feel on top of the world. Either way, keep going.

At the age of 5, I would sit and look at the homes for sale in the Sunday paper. I told my mom that I was going to do hair during the day and sell homes at night. Directly out of high school, I went to beauty school and started my career as a cosmetologist, which lasted the next 11 years. Ten years into my career, and after my now-husband pushed me into my lifelong dream of real estate, I finally took the leap and got my license. A year later, my husband and I moved out to Michigan. I knew I wanted to pursue real estate full-time, but I needed the right environment to thrive in. What does success mean to you?

My dad encouraged me. He has a couple rental properties and has fixed and flipped a handful of homes in his life. You could consider him an investor. What does success mean to you?

To me, success is the creation of an abundant, healthy and sustainable lifestyle that allows you to do what you love and impact your world in a meaningful way. Success is not a destination but an ever-evolving and growing place of being. It is a verb, not an adjective, to me. What do you do to stay grounded/centered/sane?

I would say I am at my best at social events. I love talking to other people and especially getting below-the-surface-level conversations. My favorite questions are “Why? Why? Why?”

realproducersmag.com

What drives or motivates you?

Tiny successes motivate me: when I get a call back from a client I have been nurturing, when I get an offer accepted for a client, when I get the listing after an appointment. It’s energizing. It motivates me to do more. Who has helped you get where you are today?

More people than I can name! Mom and Dad, all the KW agents, my friends and family who unconditionally support me. The authors/podcasters I listen to have dramatically changed my life. As a 2021 Best-in-Class honoree, what are your words of wisdom for the next generation of real estate agents?

Experience trumps education every time. Don’t try to learn it all before you do it. Learn a little, do a little, learn a little, do a little. Find a top agent, build a relationship, spoil them and learn how they got to where they are. The spoiling is optional. … I just like to. FAST FACTS & FAVORITES Bucket list item? Why did you decide to get into real estate?

I was recruited to work for a builder when I was working in furniture sales. I hit the ground running in 2012 and never looked back. To this day, I still can’t imagine doing anything else. What does success mean to you?

Success is the byproduct of hard work — in some aspects, it is financial and the ability to take care of my son on my own. Mattox is my greatest life achievement. It is also the ability to be able to give generously to organizations that mean a lot to me. My biggest success comes from the impact that I am able to make on my clients’ lives and on the individuals that I am privileged to lead in my professional roles. What are you most excited about in your life right now?

Another year of growth! 2020 was the year of the pivot and setting up a business — built and ran on my terms. 2021 is the year of explosive growth, and we are already projecting to smash the initial goal set.

Who has helped you get where you are today?

So many people! My grandmother, Matt Riley, Mike Lyon, Jim Hoekenschnieder, Dan Hunt, Kate Simon, Christina Griffin and Jeff Glover. I am so fortunate to have so many incredible people to look to for advice, guidance and support in any and every aspect of my life. As a 2021 Best-in-Class honoree, what are your words of wisdom for the next generation of real estate agents?

Hoekenschnieder What do you do to stay grounded/centered/sane?

I have many hobbies and interests outside of work. When I need to focus on work, knowing that I will have the ability to “turn it off” soon is my biggest way of staying centered. Golfing, boating, pool days with Mattox, wine nights with my girlfriends and travel are how I reward myself for working hard during my “on” hours. How did your challenges shape who you are today?

Growing up very poor in a rural Alabama town, I knew I would have to move away to have vast opportunities to better myself. While relocating to Michigan wasn’t ever my plan, it ended up being the best part of my plan because of Mattox. While being a working mom is hard — especially without immediate family nearby to assist when needed — it forces me to be all in when I’m at work so I can take the time that I need outside of work for him.

Why did you decide to get into real estate?

I had worked in restaurants my entire life, and I love working and interacting with people. I have always had a passion and loved to work in general, and in real estate, you can work as much as you want. My mom is also a real estate agent, and I watched her while I was growing up. What does success mean to you?

Success to me is pure happiness. I do what I love, and I love what I do: I thrive in real estate. What are you most excited about in your life right now?

I am most excited about being able to grow with my husband. We just got married in 2020. We both are people who thrive on growing as people and as professionals, so I cannot wait to see what else we can accomplish together. What do you do to stay grounded/ centered/sane?

Exercise is important to me. I absolutely love

hot yoga, and I think staying physical is very important both physically and mentally. How did your challenges shape who you are today?

My challenges have made me grow up at a young age. I have learned to be very self-driven, motivated and determined. Instead of choosing to dwell on my past, I use it to fuel myself to keep moving forward. Who has helped you get where you are today?

I would say I am the person who helped me get to where I am today. I have a great group of cheerleaders and people who are proud of me, but I pushed myself to get to where I am today. I knew what I needed to do and what I had to sacrifice to keep moving forward. As a 2021 Best-in-Class honoree, what are your words of wisdom for the next generation of real estate agents?

Care and have passion for what you are doing. Real estate is not about making money, and if that is the attitude you have, it will show. You should genuinely care

Why did you decide to get into real estate?

To be honest, I was not enjoying the field I was in prior to real estate. I had been friends with Pam and Doug’s daughters for a while, so I got to dip into “The Shaw Team” before I even joined the team. I found the housing market fascinating and decided to pursue it full-time without hesitation. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, but I also knew how rewarding it could be if I worked hard. What does success mean to you?

Success to me isn’t money — it’s happiness. Life is too short to be doing something you don’t enjoy. Money is a factor, but it is certainly not the main factor for me. I would rather be making little money but be so happy that I couldn’t contain it! Right now, I feel successful every day because I get to help people. I have always been that type of person — the “mom” of the group — and I care for others deeply. Being able to help and make connections with my clients every day has made me feel successful. When are you at your best?

I am my best, without a doubt, when I am happy. Happiness for me is huge — it keeps me going. I am also my best when I am encouraged and surrounded by other positive people. I try to encourage the “negative Nancies” of the world to be more like the “positive Pennies.” Although I am not perfect, I also have my off days. I have been trying to take one day at a time to really be my best self each day.

Stick with it, don’t give up. Even when it’s hard, remind yourself that you did this for a reason and that commitment and hard work will get you where you want to be. Lean on your mentors and on those you work with to really learn the business of real estate. Work hard, smile, laugh and be encouraging to others. Make relationships, and be there for your clients.
