NOTE This month, we celebrate Father’s Day, look back on the first month of the quarantine and highlight some charitable organizations that are especially relevant in these unprecedented times.
When I think about Father’s Day, I think about the father Chris is to our kids — how fun and loving he is, how he leads by example and how he shares the best lessons with our three children. I also think about Dr. Joseph Csotty, my father-in-law and rock of the Csotty family who passed away four years ago at the age of 70. My dear father-in-law was a passionate man — he was passionate about life, work, his friends, and, most importantly, his family. No matter what was going on in our lives, he would always bring us together, go out of his way to attend his grandchildren’s events and spend time with us because he knew that time spent with the people you love is priceless. He was taken from us too soon, but his legacy lives on through his son, and I am forever grateful to him for raising the man I am proud to have by my side as my husband and father to my children. This Father’s Day, celebrate the important men in your life who have inspired and taught you life lessons. Tell your father, fatherin-law, uncle, brother, or husband how grateful you are for them. This month’s “Making a Difference” feature on Glover’s Heroes shares how one non-profit organization in the real estate community responded to the COVID-19 crisis by showing appreciation to Michigan’s hometown heroes on the front lines of the pandemic. Our “Charity Spotlight” on Henry Ford SandCastles Grief Support Program raises awareness about children’s and teens’ unique needs following the death of a loved one and illustrates how its programs and services — which will be in higher demand following the aftermath of COVID-19 — support and serve grieving families in Southeast Michigan. If you have a charity you would like to see featured in an upcoming issue of Real Producers, reach out to us. Like all of you, we at Real Producers had to quickly adapt to the many changes and challenges that materialized due to COVID-19. In order to continue to build relationships in the real estate com10 • June 2020
munity, we amped up our online presence by hosting two Virtual Master Panels that were open to the public. We also established a new private Facebook group for the TOP 500 and our partners and streamed “Partner Spotlight” mini-interviews to promote our partners. Thank you to all the TOP PRODUCER panelists and PREFERRED PARTNERS who participated and shared their expertise with our followers, as well as to the hundreds of you who joined our zoom meetings. Finally, we came together to raise $2,000 for Beaumont’s COVID-19 Fund — thank you to those of you who donated to this important cause. On a lighter note, this month’s two “We Ask, You Answer” (WAYA) features aim to lift your spirits with #quarantinelife photos and Father’s Day tributes from the tykes and teens who shared their thoughts about the man they are honored to call Dad. As you celebrate Father’s Day and get excited for summer, we hope you enjoy our June issue, which, like all our issues, is made possible by the support of our Preferred Partners.

A UNIQUE PARTNERSHIP BUILT ON COMMON GROUND It is understood that a successful partnership is built upon basic principles of trust, mutual respect, common goals and open communication. However, to establish a legendary partnership, Deby Gannes and Lynn Baker elevated the industry standard. According to Deby, “We are fundamentally alike on how we approach our work and our clients. Our partnership is unique because we have similar backgrounds and experiences; a key advantage to our success.” The “dynamic duo” has sustained a successful real estate business for more than 22 years.

DEBY GANNES & LYNN BAKER By Robbyn Moore

@realproducers
Both Deby and Lynn were raised during the 1960s with influences from their first-generation American families. Deby’s family is from Riga, Latvia and settled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Lynn’s family came from Hungary and chose Detroit as a place to live, work and raise their children. Both families instilled in their girls an incredible work ethic, as well as the importance of education, which inspired both to earn college degrees and have an entrepreneurial spirit. Deby has a bachelor’s in art education and a master’s in special education. Lynn holds a bachelor’s in special education and a master’s in clinical social work. Each went on to work as teachers for many years in their respective fields.
realproducersmag.com
After years of teaching, Deby and Lynn transitioned their careers into real estate. Not surprisingly, the duo became REALTORS® for the same reasons, business ownership with a flexible schedule. Their combined experiences from childhood, education and teaching formed them as women and would later bond them as business partners. In 1998, as fate would have it, Deby walked into a model home where Lynn was working and began a typical sales conversation that would later lead to a partnership far greater than either of them had envisioned. The two formed a friendship and decided to join forces to build a real estate partnership. They found Hall & Hunter Realtors to be a perfect fit to build their business. At the time of their newly formed partnership, the two women discovered there was an untapped market for high-end sales in the Rochester and Oakland Township area. Deby recalled, “When we broke into the northern Oakland County market, we elevated the industry standard. It was an uphill battle, but we persevered and developed a strong market share.” Lynn added, “Sweat equity is the best term to describe how we accomplished our goals. We have always been steadfast and creative in developing our business and serving

our buyers and sellers.” Now, 22 years later, they’re happily running their business at Hall & Hunter Realtors. Deby’s diligent working style and determination is a great balance to Lynn’s strong negotiating skills and understanding of the seller’s needs. Their combined background in social work and teaching gave them the tools needed for excellent client relationships. “Lynn has good intuition and is great at developing trust with people,” Deby said. Similarly, Lynn shared, “Deby pays attention to the details both in our clients and the overall sales transaction. She listens to the needs of our clients and reassures them in a way that builds their confidence in our abilities to get the job done.” The duo is known for going the extra mile — checking on a house for outof-town-clients, making sure lights are turned off, asking hard questions on behalf of the client, treating the client with the utmost respect. “Everybody is important,” Deby explained. “Whether it’s a $100,000 home or a $1 million home, we treat everyone’s circumstances the same.” As a team, the two women have been top listing agents in their office throughout their 22 years together. Moreover, they have a combined career sales volume of nearly $1 billion. “We establish yearly and quarterly goals and have bi-monthly meetings to problem solve and improve our constantly-changing environment,” they said. “Additionally, we are most passionate about maintaining consistent communication with our buyers and sellers — whether it’s topnotch marketing or simply listening to the needs of our clients, we can be counted on for delivering the highest quality of service.” The team sees the fruits of their labor through referrals and lifelong relationships. “We are a part of the communities we serve,” Lynn said. “Our clients have become friends 18 • June 2020
and we’re now seeing their children coming to us with real estate needs. It is very rewarding to be a part of a multigenerational experience.” In addition to Deby and Lynn, the team continues to grow with its group of talented women. “Our assistants Donna Rousseau and Jean Sander are licensed REALTORS®,” Deby explained. “Their personalities and talents enable our success to continue.” New to the team is Lucy Kollin, a REALTOR® originally from China who is fluent in Mandarin along with a background in finance. “Lucy’s skill set will help us reach a broader audience among the growing Asian population in Michigan.” Also, among the growing team is Deby’s daughter, Meredith Gannes Alves. She is a licensed REALTOR® and very excited to follow in her mother’s footsteps. “We have put together an amazing group of women who complement and enhance our agenda.”

ISAAC WHITNEY
partner spotlight By Robbyn Moore
Isaac said that taking care of every client as if they were his only client is what makes people feel comforted. “’Your Community is Our Community’ is more than just our slogan,” Isaac said. “This is our hometown and we strive to be involved, build relationships, and support our community.” The agency has standards in place to make sure that people do not have any gaps in their coverage. “I know it’s not always fun to deal with insurance companies, however, I know how important it is to find the right coverage at the right price in a timely manner.”
Isaac Whitney is known as an insurance agent who cares about his clients. He places the highest level of importance on protecting his customers while at the same time educating them about their options based on their needs.
Community Insurance Center Taking Care of Coverage
20 • June 2020
@realproducers
The agency is one of the largest insurance agencies in northern Oakland County. They are constantly seeking new ways to efficiently and effectively provide service to new and existing clients and have the latest in technology for management systems. Additionally, the company is keeping pace with the ever-changing insurance industry by offering on-going professional education for all its employees. “I spent close to 10 years with a large insurance company before going independent,” he said. “The agency I’m with now really pushes new education and growing knowledge through various classes and programs.”
Isaac is an insurance agent at Community Insurance Center where last year they earned the Five Star award by Fremont Insurance, which is the highest level to achieve based on servicing and protecting clients. “Our agency has always finished top in the region, so this award was a true honor,” Isaac said. “Protecting our clients is taken very seriously within our company. I pride myself on educating my clients on all their options, so they have a level of comfort to make a sound decision.”
realproducersmag.com
When Isaac isn’t helping his clients, he can be found at a sports car show or enjoying a concert with his wife, Elizabeth. Together, they also enjoy afternoons at the pool with their daughters, Sadie and Reagan, as well as annual family vacations. “While I measure my work success by the amount of client referrals, I also believe that being involved in my children’s lives is the greatest measure of success,” Isaac said. Isaac, who learned a long time ago that guidelines, coverages and overall industry rules are always changing, said, “I stay very in tune with the new laws and business trends. I will always keep my clients informed and provide all the tools to perform at the highest level.” “Our agency believes in maintaining the highest ethical standards and credibility with clients, carriers and the public,” he explained. “Every client has different needs and situations and knowing that I provided the best coverage possible is truly the most fulfilling aspect of what I do.”

“Missing watching my boys play hockey, so I’m watching replays.” TERRA CSOTTY, PUBLISHER, REAL PRODUCERS OF OAKLAND AND WAYNE COUNTY

Glover’s HEROES Lifting Up Michigan’s Frontline With Meals and More making a difference By Jane K. Asher, Ph.D.
As COVID-19 cases increased across the state, Michigan hospital workers on the front lines of the pandemic faced increasingly scary and stressful working conditions. After hearing several stories about the dedicated medical experts who braved these tough conditions on a daily basis, Glover’s Heroes, a non-profit organization founded by Jeff Glover of Jeff Glover & Associates, made it their mission to find a way to help. “Since I can’t sew, and medical equipment is hard to get a hold of right now, we figured we’d do the next best thing … feed our nurses and medical professionals,” said Jeff. “We feel for each and every nurse and medical professional on the front lines and are so grateful for their work each and every day. We wanted to make their day a little brighter and thank them for being our heroes.” On Sunday, March 29, Jeff and a team of Glover’s Heroes volunteers filled their cars with countless boxes

of Jimmy John’s sandwiches and made “freaky fast” deliveries of just over 5,000 subs to 25 hospitals across Metro Detroit, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Ann Arbor. A little bit before 11 p.m., as Jeff finished up the last delivery in Kalamazoo and reflected upon his day of service, he was overwhelmed by the outpouring of gratitude from every nurse who greeted him to receive the sandwich delivery. “I really hope our work today inspires others to contribute to and support this hard-working group of heroes,” he said. “You never know when you may need their help, so you might as well pay it forward now while they are in need the most.” @realproducers
Throughout the day, in addition to delivering sandwiches, volunteers also shared information about the Glover’s Heroes Home Repair Program, which covers 100% of the cost of materials and labor for nurses who have fallen on hard times and could benefit from financial assistance for home repairs or home-improvement projects. “We want to take care of our medical staff for selflessly taking care of so many right now, and we will select as many nominees as we can,” Jeff said. local heroes — veterans, teachers, employed caregivers, firefighters, police officers and emergency medical technicians — are all funded by Jeff Glover & Associates. When they sell homes for any one of these “heroes,” the agent donates 20% of their commission back to the hero and another 5% to Glover’s Heroes. behind-the-scenes all-star
Stephanie AT I A S Stepping in and Stepping Up Name: Stephanie Atias Position/Title: Director of Operations Office/Company: The Delia Group with Keller Williams Years in Current Position: 1.5 years Years in the Real Estate Industry: 1.5 years
How would you describe your job in one word?
Demanding Why do you think you excel at your job?
First and foremost, I am a strong multitasker and have the ability to prioritize moving targets and tasks. I also possess amazing communication skills as a result of my background in the restaurant industry, and I regularly take the time to adapt my content for different people to ensure that I get the right message across. While this can take more time, it makes all the difference to the people I interact with and in the responses I receive from them. What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
I feel most rewarded when I see the client succeed. Everything we do — all our marketing, branding, outreach, etc. — is all about helping our client reach their goal.
What did you do before you began working in your current position?
I worked in the hospitality industry, primarily in restaurants, for 12 years prior to my transition into real estate. I was the general manager of several restaurants where I supervised the day-to-day operations, as well as marketing, financials and community outreach.
What is the most challenging aspect of your job?
Marketing, financial, HR and contracts all fall on me, so wearing many “hats” can be challenging at times.
What does your typical workday look like?
Everything I do is held against the benchmark of “does it drive us in the right direction and does it add towards us being profitable?” I typically work in the office Monday-Friday from about 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. My morning starts by checking in on emails and responding back to anything urgent. I then take a look at what is going on with the contract-to-close process/outgoing sales. I work closely with our two transaction coordinators and make sure they have anything they need. After that, my day can change depending on the week and time of year. I oversee

our team calendar and our events, so planning, marketing and coordinating all the moving pieces are all time-consuming tasks. I also oversee the team’s spending and financials, so I’m responsible for approving spending requests, asking for sponsorships, and keeping up with payroll and profit and loss statements. As I tackle my event planning and contract-to-close duties, I build and update our continuing outreach plan. Finally, as I perform all of these duties, I remain available to offer support to agents and team members.
@realproducers
What is one thing about you that others might find surprising or interesting?
I have two children, one of whom has severe food allergies. I have become incredibly adept at cooking without dairy, gluten, soy or peanuts.
How do you feel about being nominated as a Behind-the-Scenes All-Star?
Honored Is there anything else you’d like to share about yourself, about your job or about your relationship with the person who nominated you?
I have known Joe since high school and am honored to work with someone who has such vision and drive. It was his ability to see more that gave me this opportunity. With so much restaurant background, it was difficult for anyone to picture me in another role, but Joe saw what talents I had and how I could effectively use them in his business. He gave me an opportunity to transition into a career that was better for my family. When I was running restaurants, I worked a majority of nights, weekends and holidays, and with two children, it was incredibly difficult to balance work and life. I am beyond blessed to have a leadership position and a career that I love and that better aligns my business and life.
Joe Delia, operating principal at Keller Williams Paint Creek & Somerset and founder of The Delia Group, is impressed by Stephanie’s “relentless” work ethic. “Steph just gets stuff done, she’s candid and real, and she puts in the work,” Joe said. “Stephanie came to our company with little real experience yet stepped right in and started to take charge of the priorities of the business — she’s helped steer us through ups and downs, and she’s greatly appreciated.” Joe admires Stephanie’s foresight and takecharge spirt. “She understands where we’re going, and she’s willing to align around that,” he said. “Stephanie continuously takes the bull by the horns and just handles things.”
When you’re not working, what do you like to do for fun?
I am an avid runner. I usually run six days a week, and I have already committed to two half marathons this year.

E M O T I O N A L
RESILIENCE As I sit down to write this in mid-March, we as a nation – no, as humanity – are in the firm grip of the COVID-19 pandemic. Schools are out, businesses are closed… and it feels like everything is upside-down. I’m seeing reactions from friends and family fluctuating wildly, everything between sheer panic and complete apathy (sometimes even in the same day or from the same person!). We can define emotional resilience as the ability to cope in highly stressful situations, such as the one we currently face. Emotionally resilient people handle acute trauma more efficiently, and they can bounce back more quickly in the aftermath. These individuals grow stronger and learn about themselves and others from their negative experiences, while others barely recover or develop harmful coping mechanisms (e.g., substance abuse) or psychological disorders as a result. What makes some people more resilient in crises than others? Overall, emotionally resilient people tend to have several traits in common: • Emotional awareness: Resilient people are conscious of their
emotions and have taken time to explore and understand
what they feel and why they feel it. This important form of self-care leads to higher degrees of self-awareness, allowing them to disengage from the adversity at hand, thus gaining them perspective.
Homes that have been professionally staged statistically sell in 1/5 of the time and for 4-16% more! With this kind of windfall in each home, how can you afford NOT to use a professional home stager?
Contact Us Today!
• Strong social support system: Perhaps most important, a
strong support system is consciously cultivated and valued by emotionally resilient individuals. Positive social support has been shown to stimulate the release of oxytocin, a “happy hormone,” whereas a lack of support from friends and family is associated with indicators of compromised physical and mental health. • Perception of mastery: Resilient people believe they have
control over their own lives rather than being controlled by external factors, which allows them to be proactive in dealing with stress and finding solutions for the problems at hand. As author Jean-Paul Bedard writes for Huffington Post, “Resilience has a lot to do with embracing past scars and the dissonance of lived experience as a road map forward and, ultimately, as a bridge to connect with others in your community.” With this in mind, see you on the other side!

RON
LEAPING
ROCZ
WITHOUT
LIMITS
After a little more than a decade as a REALTOR®, Ron was once again inspired to leap. “As a kid, my Dad had me listen to Earl Nightingale’s The Strangest Secret, and my main takeaway was that the people who thrive in the world are the ones who go out and look for the situations they want...and if they can’t find them...they make them,” Ron said. “I found my ideal career in real estate, but I realized I wanted more for my personal business and for my team, so I set out to find it.” Ron didn’t end up finding what he wanted, so after receiving his broker’s license in 2014, he decided to create his ideal brokerage. That leap landed Ron as broker and owner of RE/MAX Nexus, where he has built a home for over 40 licensed agents and five support staff, three of whom are licensed. The company runs primarily out of its Birmingham headquarters but also offers a satellite, cafe-style location in Madison Heights. At RE/MAX Nexus, agents subscribe to a mantra of “CLASS”: culture, leads, accountability, systems and structure. “Our agents have core values and a growth mindset,” Ron said. “They choose to participate in accountability sessions and are provided with systems to support all aspects of their business, as well as the support of our stellar marketing team, transactions team, field services and agent service division.”
Ron Rocz firmly believes that “you can’t cross a chasm in two small jumps,” so, in 2003, he opted for one big leap by quitting his job at his family’s audio and video production company to study real estate. A month later, Ron was working in the business, and 60 days in, he was celebrating his first closing. In the remaining six months of that first year, Ron went on to sell 20 more homes — his giant leap into the unknown landed him a Rising Star award at his company and left him amazed at what was possible.
broker feature
Ron’s career volume as a REALTOR® is over $150 million, and in 2018, he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award for exceeding $100 million in sales. In 2019, Nexus Group, Ron’s team, sold $39 million, which resulted in them earning the prestigious RE/MAX Diamond Team Award as well as the #1 ranking for all RE/MAX of Southeastern Michigan for both number of units sold and total sales volume. In addition to being the 2016 RE/ MAX Broker Owner of the Year, from 2017-2019, the brokerage received the Highest Net Gain in agent recruitment for RE/MAX.

“Right now, and really every day since we started Nexus, my greatest passion has been helping our agents reach their goals,” Ron said. “We help them achieve their respective goals by asking the right questions, listening, understanding, advocating and making a plan that works for them...then we hold them accountable to their goal.” Ron believes that brokers need a diverse skill set to expertly advise agents in competitive and potentially combative situations. “Being a broker or a team leader must come from a position of abundance — you must have more to give than you can ever expect in return,” Ron said. Ron admits that effectively operating a brokerage is a time-consuming undertaking, and he doesn’t divide his work life from his home life. Ron and his wife Mary, the marketing and advertising specialist at Nexus, Right now, and love what they do and strive really every day to be positive role models as professionals and as parents to since we started their daughters Mia and Chloe. Nexus, my greatest Between the sleepovers and the sports schedules — Mia swims passion has been and plays softball, volleyball and helping our agents tennis, and Chloe is a competitive team gymnast — Ron and reach their goals, Mary keep busy outside the office. In their free time, the Rocz family enjoys traveling, being poolside at home and hanging out with their dog Scarlet, a Shi-chon who happens to be their biggest fan. Ron’s entrepreneurial spirit can be traced back to both of his parents. His dad began his career as a radio DJ and opened a recording studio in the basement of their home that grew into a globally recognized name in the production industry; and after his parents divorced, his mom moved Ron and his siblings to Florida where she started her own real estate company. They later moved to Houston where Ron’s family had a portfolio of properties to sell. In 1992, following Ron’s high school graduation and the devastation of Hurricane Andrew, Ron and his family moved to South Florida. “Shelter is a foundation block in the hierarchy of needs, and people needed homes,” Ron said. “Real estate was always a part of my journey, and it continues to shape my future journey: We do great work for our

clients, they refer us to others who want to experience the same and we give back to our community more each time — the more we do, the more good we can do.” As a result of his upbringing and rich experiences in the industry, Ron sees past problems, seeks out new opportunities and capitalizes on the future. He possesses the grit and the will to leap forward, and in doing so, he’s discovered a path for himself as a REALTOR® and forged his own path as a broker at Nexus. “I consider it a great honor to be able to do the work we do, and I hope the many licensed REALTORS® in the market understand the weight of the role we play in the communities we serve,” he said. “Taking care of clients and navigating the process is important work, and it’s made possible by our willingness to innovate, inspire and connect with one another.” @realproducers

FINANCIAL
TIPS
CONGRATULATIONS – the big day has finally arrived! Although I’m sure this senior year looked pretty different from how you anticipated (thanks, COVID-19!), high school graduation nevertheless is an exciting time for both students and parents. Now that your grown-up, independent future is spreading out before you, there are so many variables to consider: college? Job? Military service? Travel? Finances? Yep, that’s a big one! It can feel overwhelming if you don’t know where to begin with managing your own finances. Check out (and share with your favorite grad!) the tips below to get started on the right foot! Make a budget.
Creating a sensible budget for yourself is a crucial first step. Once you know where your money is going, you can better understand how to make it go where you want. There are many ways to approach setting up a budget – you might write everything out on paper or choose one of many excellent budgeting apps available (I like Mint). Most important is having an accurate account of your income and your major fixed expenses, such as utilities, food, rent, etc.

FOR NEW HIGH SCHOOL GRADS Establish credit (responsibly).
Credit is a useful and necessary financial tool, but only if you understand how to use it properly. First, take time to research and understand what determines your credit score; after all, your score affects practically every decision these days, including your ability to take out loans, rent a house or apartment, or even open utilities in your name. Then, when you’re ready to build some credit history, start small! Choose a small loan or a credit card with a low limit and interest rate, and establish a regular pattern of on-time payments.

ager Peggy Nielsen, LPC. “Our mission focuses on the belief that every child and teen deserve the opportunity to grieve in a supportive, nurturing environment.”
charity spotlight By Jane K. Asher, Ph.D.
In 1997, Peggy, who had experience working with two children’s bereavement programs in the Midwest, teamed up with Henry Ford Hospice Administrator Sondra Seely to establish SandCastles, the first children’s bereavement program of its kind in Southeast Michigan. Peggy knew from her experience that this vital resource could change the lives and futures of grieving children, as she had seen and experienced it. As a hospice administrator, as well as a mother who lost a child just after birth, Sondra knew the hardships and challenges that plague grieving families. Together they were determined to help families support their children in grief, and within 15 months, they had three SandCastles programs up and running.
Henry Ford SandCastles Grief Support Program
“Grieving children commonly feel alone in their experiences and may lack the coping skills, cognitive function, and supportive family environment necessary to express their grief in a healthy manner,” Peggy said. “Unresolved childhood bereavement has been shown to lead to an increased likelihood of substance abuse, greater vulnerability to depression, higher rates of criminal behavior, reduced academic achievement and lower employment rates. SandCastles works as a preventative program to help children and teens learn how to grieve and cope with the loss in a positive way, eliminate self-destructive behavior and promote healthy lifestyles — by learning how to make positive life choices now, children can carry these healthy habits into adulthood and secure a brighter, healthier future.”
Building Safe Spaces for Children to Grieve, Heal and Grow Coping with the death of a loved one — and navigating grief that follows — is undoubtedly a harrowing experience for anyone, regardless of their age. However, the loss of a loved one poses unique challenges for children and teens, especially if they find themselves without the social and emotional support to mitigate a world that often avoids talking about loss.
From the onset of its establishment, Henry Ford SandCastles Grief Support Program for Children and Families (SandCastles), a community division of Henry Ford Hospice, set out to fill the unmet needs of grieving children in Southeast Michigan; and for over two decades, SandCastles has expanded its reach across three counties and seven programs to change the lives and futures of hundreds of grieving children.
SandCastles offers a range of services to help children and teens successfully navigate their grief journeys: A year-round bi-weekly family grief support group program at seven sites across Oakland, Wayne, and Macomb Counties; SandCastles Camp, a weekend overnight bereavement camp held in August; support for schools; and community education and trainings on children’s grief and loss.
“Families share with us that when death occurs in a family, life turns upside down. Everyone is hurting and no one knows what to do — adults find it difficult to cope with their own grief let alone trying to aid their young children in this difficult journey,” said SandCastles Co-Founder and Program Man48 • June 2020

Typically, the grief support sessions begin with dinner, include age-based smallgroup activities and conclude with a closing circle activity for all children and adult participants. The children have the opportunity to openly share their stories in a judgment-free space and discover ideas for coping with day-to-day obstacles and difficult painful moments. “Healing occurs in the sharing of their stories and listening to others,” Peggy said. “Participants gain hope for a better future and discover new ways to remember loved ones.”
Spread the Word — Sharing that SandCastles is available for families in need is always helpful. Learn more by visiting the contact page at www.aboutsandcastles.org and joining SandCastles email list.
SandCastles Camp offers companionship and understanding from others who have experienced similar situations. Similar to the year-round program, group sessions at SandCastles Camp focus on the three tasks of grief: Understanding what dead means; feeling the feelings associated with the death; and going on living and loving after the death — moving the person from a physical relationship to a memory. Through projects, art, writing, and other creative expression, campers learn about their grief journey, share their memories, support their peers and develop life-long coping skills.
Donate Funds — Individuals who have a heart for children can support SandCastles programs through personal or corporate financial contributions.
SandCastles programs and services are 100% funded by donor dollars. “We are extremely grateful to receive in-kind donations from Henry Ford Health System (HFHS), such as office space and access to our legal, philanthropy and marketing departments, yet our budget — whatever it takes to run the programs — must be raised each year,” Peggy said. In anticipation of the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and the increased need for grief support, SandCastles is ramping up its fundraising and volunteer initiatives to continue offering its services to families for free. “Research has shown that in the State of Michigan, 1 in 12 children will experience the death of a parent or sibling before they turn 18. This doesn’t account for grandparents, friends, teachers, etc. With the current COVID-19 crisis, we expect this number to be significantly higher,” Peggy said. If SandCastles’ mission touches your heart, there are several ways that you can help:
Join the SandCastles Team — Volunteers are an integral part of SandCastles programming. The organization regularly trains community volunteers who are willing to help grieving children by volunteering their time and serving as group facilitators and program aides.
Participate in “Build the Castle” — Each year, SandCastles has a “Build the Castle” month or quarter, which is a collection of third-party fundraisers (dining events, donor drives and even painting parties) put on by anyone in the community who wants to help raise funds. Attend Fundraising Events — Cruise-In for a Cause, SandCastles’ annual event at the Suburban Exotic Motor Cars of Michigan dealership in Troy, is typically held each May but is currently postponed until fall. For a minimum donation, guests can test drive a luxury car such as a Maserati or a Bentley, browse the showrooms, and enjoy tasty food, wine, amazing gift baskets and great people. SandCastles is also planning its first team fundraising event with the Detroit Free Press Marathon 5K and Family Fun Run, which is held in October. Sponsor an Event — Real estate businesses and our Preferred Partners can support the SandCastles mission by sponsoring fundraising events for the organization.
