editor’s note
Hello
Sunshine! Summer is here in all of its glory, which means that my productivity will constantly be put to the test. Let’s be honest — no one wants to be indoors tackling that to-do list on a gorgeous, sunny afternoon, and I am no exception. I would rather be lounging on my patio, chatting with my neighbor at the fence, tending my garden, churning my compost, putzing around in my garage, running the trail near my house, power washing my porch, pulling weeds from my grass — literally anything that gets me away from my desk and my computer. The “summer slump” is real — several studies report that 25% of people feel less productive in the summertime. But the good news is that we need not feel guilty about our summer slacking because time spent away from our desks and enjoying sunny skies ultimately increases our productivity. Soaking up some vitamin D on a regular basis during your summer workdays and giving yourself adequate time to recharge and refresh on an extended vacation boosts motivation and happiness. Unlike the fleeting warmth and magic of summer, those items on your to-do list

aren’t going anywhere — they’ll be waiting for you when you make your way back indoors or when you return home from a much-needed, weeklong vacation. So what are you waiting for? Embrace the summer slump right now: Grab your sunglasses, pour yourself a glass of something refreshing, venture to your favorite outdoor spot, and savor this July issue of Real Producers beneath the summer sun. ALI T. SUCCESS CHARARA A COMMITMENT TO
top producer By Robbyn Moore Photos by Stylish Detroit
Prior to launching a career in real estate in 2005, Ali T. Charara was an entrepreneur, a real estate developer and also worked with the City of Dearborn as a sworn officer of the 19th District Court. He initially started working on a part-time basis; however, after two years into his career, he decided to fully commit himself to his true passion of real estate. Since that time, Ali has an impressive career volume of more than $350 million — $62 million of which he generated in 2020. He has been with CENTURY 21 Curran & Oberski for 15 years and has won numerous awards within his company, including President’s Team, Quality Service Pinnacle Team, Top 21 Global Team and GRAND CENTURION for six consecutive years. Ali also received an award recognizing his professional accomplishments in real estate from the American Arab Chamber of Commerce and was given special recognition by the Michigan House of Representatives. Since 2018, he has had the #1 team in Michigan in sales volume and placed in the top 10 in the United States.
because the market was hitting rock bottom and future growth looked uncertain. As a new agent, he had to deal with foreclosures and short sales while witnessing other agents leave the industry. “I gained a lot of experience by weathering the storm,” he explained. “I believed in myself, trusted my instincts and focused on building a solid clientele.”
Ali was born in Lebanon and raised in Dearborn, Michigan. His father was a successful businessman who played a major role in influencing Ali and, ultimately, became a motivating factor for Ali’s success.
Admittedly, Ali said every dream and goal in life revolves around real estate. “I confess that I eat, sleep and breathe real estate,” he said with a laugh. “I honestly don’t know what my life would be like without it.”
“My father is the one man I admire most in my life,” Ali shared. “Everyone who knew him loved him for his amazing characteristics. When my father passed away, I decided that I wanted to keep his legacy going by following in his footsteps as a businessman.” When Ali first got into the real estate business, it was a very challenging time

Ali defines success by commitment: to his job, to his clients, to his family and to himself. “Being committed to my efforts is the core of success,” he said. “It’s how I’ve built my business, and it’s what keeps me going every day.”
Ali’s allegiance to his work underscores his passion to be the best at his craft. “I am dedicated to my team and my clients,” he said. “I have no problem taking calls late at night or making myself available on weekends; my door is always open for all agents and clients alike.”

Ali has an acute understanding of how to put his clients at ease and said the most rewarding part of what he does is to make people happy. “I will always go over and above for my clients,” he said. “Any obstacles that come in the way, I make sure they are resolved in the best manner for a happy and successful closing.” Getting to the closing table is Ali’s favorite aspect of his job. “Closing day represents all our accomplishments because it entails going through so many hurdles, solving so many unexpected issues and addressing them head-on,” he said. “It’s the challenge of a transaction that makes the closing so rewarding.” Setting personal goals has helped Ali define his career path. In 2016, he decided to start a team, which now includes two other agents. Together, they work to motivate and empower one another by helping each other with support, assistance and ongoing education.
Given Ali’s status and expertise, he is especially talented at guiding and advising up-and-coming agents. He stresses the importance of building relationships — not just with clients but also with other real estate agents. “Relationships are built on mutual respect,” Ali explained. “Clients should be treated the way you would want to be treated. The same goes for other agents. This includes agents on your team, in your brokerage and on the other side of the transaction. When 14 • July 2021

MY DOOR IS ALWAYS OPEN FOR ALL AGENTS AND CLIENTS ALIKE.” there’s mutual respect and honesty, a long-term relationship can be built; otherwise, you will lose credibility, and people will prefer not to deal with you.” Outside of business, Ali enjoys running, and watching and playing football. He and his wife, Mirna, have been married for 16 years and have two boys, Mohamed Ali and Tyser. They enjoy watching movies together and hanging out with friends and family. realproducersmag.com
Ali’s career in real estate has been a natural extension of his enthusiasm and extraordinary focus on the needs and goals of his clients. Moving forward, he is most passionate about growing his business and reaching yearly goals while continuously reinvesting in his relationships. “In today’s real estate business, I don’t wait for properties or deals to hit the market,” Ali said. “I am committed to finding and creating deals. If need be, I will knock on people’s doors to put things together; I don’t wait for them to knock on mine.” Wayne County Real Producers • 15

tool to share with contractors for estimate or pre-planning furniture placement. Prior to launching his business, Dave worked for years in engineering and design, and as a certified property manager — both excellent precursors to a career in the real estate inspection field. Beyond that, Dave has been involved in residential and commercial construction projects throughout the country as well as mission work in Mexico. “My involvement in construction was inspired at an early age as I watched my father run a very successful homebuilding business for over 50 years,” he shared. Dave’s company is involved with various groups within the community and actively serves on the Affiliate committee for the Greater Metropolitan Association of REALTORS® (GMAR) and the Dearborn Area Board of REALTORS® (DABOR). In 2020, the DABOR honored the company as Affiliate of the Year. “Be the easiest part of the real estate transaction” is their team’s motto. From the booking of the appointment to the completion of the inspection, the group aims to provide above-and-beyond exceptional care to their clients. “We have six full-time inspectors, with over 75 years combined experience,” Dave said. “We are the largest franchise in Michigan with daily operations running seven days a week. Our technology allows clients to review their report 24/7 online, ensuring quality service is communicated at all levels.” Throughout the years, Dave has seen a lot of changes — many of them due to technology and the increasing market demands. “When we started, 15% to 20% of transactions had professional inspections handwritten,” he explained. “Today, it’s about 85% and realproducersmag.com

We’ve been very involved with the evolution of new technologies in homes: everything from geothermal HVAC and tankless water heaters to solar and various home technology automations.” The team’s ability to keep up on technology allows them to inform and educate customers on the condition of such systems in the home. “Technology has improved the way we test homes and how we document results and prepare the report. It allows us to print the report on-site to meet the demands on time and make it available any time of the day,” Dave said. The Dalfino Team performs inspections that require an investigative role as well as an educational role, both key elements that have earned them a stellar reputation in client service. “We enjoy helping our clients buy with confidence by providing an accurate assessment of the home in a way that doesn’t cause alarm,” Dave shared. “I embrace every opportunity to educate our team and real estate partners so that we can all build our business together. As home inspectors, we have the unique opportunity to meet people during a rather strenuous time in their lives. What we do and say matters in these moments to our clients as they think through one of the largest single purchases in their lifetime. If we can effectively communicate our findings in a way that eases fear and brings confidence, we’ve done our job.” With over 30 years and 20,000 inspections behind them, The Dalfino Team is more than just a part of the community: They’re like family. “We have been inspecting homes long enough to have relationships with generations of families,” Dave said proudly. “We are inspecting homes for the children of previous clients whose childhood home we inspected — adding a whole new meaning to the term ‘family business.’” For more information about The Dalfino Team, visit westwayne.pillartopost.com.

Dave MacFarland agent on the rise
By Jane K. Asher, Ph.D. Photos by Stylish Detroit Photos taken at Cranbrook Custom Homes – Montcaret in Northville
D R I V I N G A PAT H O F P U R P O S E Dave MacFarland possesses an enlightened sense of selfagency and is extremely cognizant of the consequences of his actions. “Everything that happens to us in life can be traced back to a single decision or to a series of decisions we make,” he said. “Having clarity on that is power — placing blame on others is for people who aren’t willing to hold themselves accountable.”
Throughout his life, Dave’s propensity for situating himself in the driver’s seat empowered him to shape his own road forward in his career. And although he did not pave that road overnight or encounter some detours along the way, he eventually found his professional stride and perfect career route in real estate. After graduating from Livonia Stevenson High in 2002, Dave went away to college where he studied to become a physical education teacher. After spending three years in college, Dave wasn’t certain that he was on the right career path, so he decided to take a full-time position with his brother’s construction company. By 2007, 23-yearold Dave had saved up enough money to purchase a nice brick ranch in Redford but decided to hold off and continue to watch the market. Then, as the market was bottoming out in 2009, he seized the opportunity and purchased his first home: a foreclosure with 80 feet of canal frontage on Cass Lake in West Bloomfield. By 2013, Dave, who was no longer happy working in construction, told his girlfriend-now-wife, Maureen, that he was contemplating selling his house and using the profit to start a new venture. “She reminded me how it always bothered me that I didn’t finish my last two semesters of college, and within three months of that conversation, the house was sold, and I was a full-time student again,” he said. realproducersmag.com
After graduating with honors with a bachelor’s in communications and a minor in health education from Eastern Michigan University, Dave began to hunt for the perfect career. “It was during this time that the agent I’d used in the past called me on what I know now to be a routine prospecting call — we chatted about what I was going through, and he suggested that I consider real estate,” Dave said. “We had the same conversation when I was 20 and again at 25, but I wasn’t ready. Then, at 30, I was ready to bet on myself — I was licensed within four weeks of the conversation and haven’t looked back.” Today, Dave is a lead agent and president of MacFarland & Company Home Sales at Keller Williams Advantage and has achieved a career volume of $48 million — $12.4 million of which he generated in 2020. In addition to earning the title of Hour Detroit Real Estate All-Star, Dave was named Rookie of Year at KW Advantage in 2015, as well as KW International’s Silver status in 2016 and 2018, Bronze in 2017 and Triple Gold in 2019 and 2020. “I am most passionate about understanding the shifting market landscape so that I am fully equipped to best help my clients make smart decisions about what’s likely to be their largest asset/ investment,” Dave said. “My greatest reward is keeping in touch with past clients and seeing them at our appreciation events — we are working to build a community rather than a database.” MacFarland & Company Home Sales includes Operation Manager Beth Mancuso, who has been working with Dave for the past year. “We are a perfect team because she does what I’m not excited to do at an extraordinarily high level and vice versa,” he said. Dave also relies on the support of showing assistants and is looking forward to bringing new dynamic talent on board as his business continues to grow. Wayne County Real Producers • 23
Dave says that his route in both business and in life is paved with accountability and goal setting. These values stem from his parents — they were both educators who taught Dave to value not just the act of knowing but also of understanding the world around him. “My parents also instilled in me a strong sense of accountability and guided me to realize that nothing happens by accident,” Dave said. “There is a lesson to be learned in every life experience — good, bad and indifferent — and the people who can identify these learning opportunities and grow from them are the happiest.” Throughout his life, Dave relished countless long car rides to the family cabin with his dad, whom he describes as “a true Renaissance man.” “For three and a half hours each way, I’d fire off as many questions as I could think of and try and sponge as much from his answers as I could,” Dave said. “If my dad didn’t know something, he’d learn it and was happy to share his experience and advice with anyone who needed it.” Dave is also grateful for his mother’s ongoing commitment to his personal growth and development. “I’m not a naturally organized person — it’s something I’ve always struggled with,” he said. “Ever since I was a child, my mom offered me what I now know to be ‘systems and leverage’ to help address my shortcomings, so I could focus more on my strengths.”
he said. Additionally, Dave teaches multiple classes at his office’s market center every year and enjoys the many opportunities he has to help new and experienced agents grow their businesses. Dave wants to be remembered as the individual who his parents raised him to be: a man who acts purposely and lives by design. This goal resonates in his spirit now more than ever after experiencing the death of both of his parents this past year. “Life and business are going to have ups and downs, some of which is outside of our control — what we can control is how we react, respond and learn,” he said. “My parents were both extremely proud of who I am and who I’m working to become; if I used losing them as an excuse to take my foot off the gas, well, that would piss them right off.” And so, without hesitation, Dave continues to drive forward on the road that he has shaped throughout the years, holding himself accountable for his decisions in business and in life … and with each deliberate turn, Dave doesn’t just continue his journey; he reflects on the road that he has traveled, on the knowledge he has acquired and on the goals he has set — and actualized — along the way.
“We are working to build a community rather than a database.”
Dave was also greatly influenced by his hardworking and extremely driven brother John and by the years he spent working alongside him in the construction industry, as well as by Mrs. Judy Berjeski, his high school global education teacher who stressed “the why” over “the what” and encouraged Dave to “think global and act local.” More so, Dave is thankful for his wife, whom he calls his perfect match. “Maureen understands me better than anyone I’ve ever known, and I’m incredibly lucky to have met her,” Dave said. “We just welcomed our first child, Rose Marie, into the world in March of this year, and we are head over heels for her and having a blast watching her learn something new every day.” Given all his wise and stimulating mentors, it’s not surprising that Dave’s fervor for teaching and learning extends into his career. “I have a passion for teaching, and real estate allows me to teach my clients about not only buying and selling their home but also basic home construction and maintenance,” 24 • July 2021

us personally, so we focused on the goal, and, together, we were able to get both of our clients the results they were hoping for in the end.” After the transaction was completed, Erik approached Yaz about an idea that he had to start his own brokerage with a focus on the strategy that had allowed him to build his personal business. He was doing something new in the industry by leveraging social media and technology to sell homes more effectively. With Erik’s expertise being geared more toward business strategy and marketing, Yaz was the perfect partner to handle the operational side of the company. Exemplary leadership is not something that can be taught in a classroom. Leaders are bred and taught through their experiences with adversity and conflict. Through precisely those types of experiences, Yesmeen “Yaz” Abdullatif has evolved into the kind of leader that any company would be lucky to have leading the way.
At 16 years old, Yaz faced an unfathomable amount of adversity when she suddenly lost both of her parents. Most 16-year-olds would break under such circumstances, but Yaz couldn’t. She’s the oldest of four children and knew that she needed to stay strong for her brother and sisters. It was at the same time that most kids were deciding where to attend college that Yaz was getting custody of her three siblings and buying her first home.
to evolve into a leader with a perfect balance of empathy and assertion. “Buying and selling homes are two of the most important and emotional decisions someone will make in their lifetime. Being able to assist with that is rewarding on so many levels. The best part about my job was not only helping in that area but also having the privilege to help friends and colleagues create a career for themselves as well,” Yaz explained. “The chance to teach others became so rewarding that I began to find every opportunity to champion others. In turn, I was learning something new every day.”
It was around this time that Yaz was introduced to the world of real estate. She was given an opportunity to work for a brokerage and jumped on it without hesitation. As her experience expanded, so did her passion for all things real estate. Even more so, her new leadership role at home and her growing knowledge of the industry had her ready to take the next step in her career. To further evolve her skills, she began working for a Detroitbased title company.
A little over two years ago, Yaz listed a home for sale in Canton, MI. It was during this transaction that Yaz met Erik Wright, who was working with a small brokerage out of Plymouth, MI, at the time. He was representing the buyers, and they both had to work together to get through several speed bumps throughout the deal.
In no time, Yaz was moving up within the company and took on a leadership position within the company’s real estate team and began leading at a national level. Yaz knew exactly what she was meant to do for a living — helping people grow and hone their skills through coaching and training. The same experiences that caused so much pain allowed her
“Everything that could go wrong with this deal, did,” Yaz recalled. “In an effort to get our clients to the closing table, Erik and I maintained a very level-headed relationship. The disruptions of the transaction had nothing to do with either one of

“While I was earning a very healthy income at the time, I wasn’t feeling strong about my future growth possibilities,” Yaz shared. “I’ve never chased money to make me happy, so I was excited to hear more about what Erik was working on.” After a couple of months of Erik trying to sell her on starting this company with him, Yaz decided it was time to take the leap. Yaz has always been hungry for growth and for further developing her own skills, and this presented the opportunity to do just that. They decided to name the company Social House Real Estate Group (SH) after their strategy, which is heavily focused on paid social media marketing. “I’m so glad that I took the leap and invested in myself,” Yaz said. “I’m healthier and happier after finding the type of autonomy that I was looking for, which has led to a whole new level of confidence in myself. Bottom line, best decision I’ve ever made.” At SH, Yaz acts as the Chief Operating Officer where she puts her talents on full display — training their growing team of agents and helping them achieve their goals by implementing their innovative, new strategies. They currently have 15 licensed salespeople and two staff members, with plans to more than double their team in 2021. “We continue to see technology threaten to replace jobs all over the United States, and real estate is no exception. Anyone can simply list a home, but merely uploading a home to the internet isn’t going to cut it anymore. We need to do more for our clients and, in turn, help them make more money when they’re selling by leveraging strategic, paid social media ads that get their home in front of hundreds of thousands more people,” Yaz explained. “It’s important that we don’t ignore the obvious changes in people’s 30 • July 2021
expectations when it comes to buying and selling a home. Blockbuster, for example, refused to adapt to consumer needs, and we saw how that ended for them. I don’t want the same to happen to our profession.” “The saying, ‘people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care’ really resonates with me,” Yaz said. “I think a lot of leaders like to jump in and tell their teams about everything they’ve learned or know without taking the time to learn about their people. My question is: If you can’t take the time to invest in the people around you, then why will they invest in anything you’re building?” It’s that mentality that has led Yaz to become an incredible leader, both in and out of the real estate industry. In addition to her role at SH, she also serves as the president of a nonprofit organization called Pet-A-Pet where she helps volunteers who offer their personal dogs and/or cats as pet therapy animals.
Yaz has no plans of slowing down. “I’m excited for what else is to come,” Yaz said enthusiastically. “I owe a debt of gratitude to Erik for seeing something in me and never giving up.” Her appreciation has been poured into her business, which is led by a genuine work ethic and fueled with compassion. “I’ve always believed in myself, but it’s nice when others do, too.” A lesson that Yaz learned early in her career, which she offers to other agents, is to take a chance on yourself. “You won’t regret it,” she concluded. @realproducers

CARS & REAL ESTATE
STARS We couldn’t have asked for a more gorgeous day for our first in-person event of 2021, which was also our first-ever joint event for Oakland County Real Producers and Wayne County Real Producers. The private event revved up at GR Auto Gallery where top real estate agents and our Preferred Partners browsed the expansive showroom of antique, classic and sports cars, and refueled with tasty food and treats provided by Franks Etc. food truck from Thomas’s Catering and Detroit Mini Donut.
Special thanks to our Platinum Sponsors — GR Auto Gallery, Omega Lending, Alliance Title of Michigan and Defined Home Improvement — as well as to our Silver Sponsors — Sandi Frith from Huntington Bank, Lombardo Homes, Cranbrook Custom Homes, Morse Moving and Storage, Total House Inspection, Jacque Gorris from Supreme Lending, Chet’s Cleaning and Detroit Mini Donut — for making this event possible. Thank you to Andy Schwartz from Stylish Detroit, Dawn Townsend and WayUp Media for capturing the event with video and photos. Thank you to Jimmy Johnson and Tammy Dalmer from Graphic Takeover for filling the swag bags, as well as to Amanda Hatfield from Omega Lending and Lisa Zubal from One Hope Wine for checking in real estate agents. We are so grateful to all of you who joined us, and we look forward to making more memories with you at our next event.
“I didn’t think I would enjoy the cars so much,” said Tayleon Puryear from eXp Realty. “The food was great, and I loved getting to meet some of the other top-producing agents — I am looking forward to the next event.” “I enjoyed that Real Producers tied high-end cars to the real estate world, and the people who own the facility are great,” said Daryl Wizinsky from Elegant Homes Realty. “It is always said that your network is your net worth — making connections like this can only lead to bigger and better relationships.” 34 • July 2021
