In June of 2020, Kim Draper made her Real Producers debut as a Rising Star in the industry. At the time, Kim, who had less than two years of real estate experience as an agent with Island Realty Inc., was intent on earning a coveted Top Producer spot on the cover — and now, Kim has done just that. “I am always up for a challenge, but, more importantly, I consider it an honor to be included with the many well-deserved people before me,” she said. “I am just naturally competitive, a hard worker and very goal oriented. I’m always striving for personal growth and ways to improve myself.” Kim’s rapid ascent to Top Producer and the strong brand recognition she has developed on Grosse Ile and in the neighboring communities materialized as a result of her dedication to ongoing education and her propensity for keeping up to date with video marketing and other industry trends. Most importantly, she hasn’t lost sight of what matters the most in this industry: the clients. “My focus has always been — and still is — my clients’ overall experience,” Kim said. “In real estate, no two transactions are the same. I am constantly adjusting to new situations and coming up with solutions to make deals work. Through attentiveness and creativity, there is a solution for everyone — the word ‘no’ is not an option; it’s a starting point.” Driven by her commitment to her clients, as well as by her willingness to pivot and adapt in an ever-changing industry, Kim is currently on track to close out 2021 with nearly $20 million in sales. She has also been Island Realty’s top producer in both 2019 and 2020 and will most likely retain her title in 2021. “I complete all transactions with the utmost integrity and sincerity for all of my clients,” Kim said. “I love the emotion of real estate, the roller coaster ride with clients. Some people shy away from that piece, but I gravitate toward it.” Kim also loves surrounding herself with people she knows and trusts. “I consider my clients to be in that pool, along with my co-workers and friends,” she added. One of those people Kim trusts and works closely with is her “amazing marketing director/transaction coordinator/ director of all things,” Andrea O’Donnell. “Andrea wears multiple hats, and she has a ton of patience and a great background in marketing and public relations,” Kim said. “We are a great team — we can take an idea and run with it. As the leader of the company’s largest account, Kim regularly traveled throughout the midwestern and eastern U.S. After she and her husband, Rob, started their family, Kim was ready for a new career, one in which she could set her own schedule and “be present at home.” After Kim and her husband purchased and sold a few of their homes, Kim kept in touch with their agent who inspired and encouraged her to give real estate a try. “I have always had a passion for real estate, and I love meeting new families and helping them achieve their goals, so this change was perfect for me,” Kim said.

In real estate, Kim finds a lot of personal fulfillment in educating her buyers on the state of the market and helping them find their dream home. “The whole process can be overwhelming and stressful, but the smile on my client’s face when they have keys in hand makes everything worth it,” she said. “My true passion is being a home matchmaker, and I wouldn’t change a thing!”

She is also ever so thankful for her #1 fan, Rob, as well as for her sister and longtime group of friends who continue to support her along the way. “My friends and family truly inspire and motivate me,” Kim shared. Kim and Rob met at Michigan State University where Kim earned her bachelor’s degree in packaging engineering. They have been married for 13 years and are the proud parents of three boys: Dylan, 11, Mason, 10, and Lennon, 6. As a family, the Drapers all enjoy playing sports and board games, skiing, hiking and vacationing. In her free time, Kim likes watching a good tearjerker — her favorites are the Hallmark holiday movies that she used to watch with her grandma — and listening to country, alternative, pop and throwback ‘80s and ‘90s jams. Kim makes time for exercising on her Peloton and running outside — she has completed seven marathons. Additionally, Kim is involved with her sons’ schools where she helps out in their classrooms and has served on the Grosse Ile Parent and Teacher Booster Club board for several years. She is also an active member of The Guidance Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to cultivating the development, resilience and well-being of individuals and families. At the end of the day, Kim wants to be remembered for her smile and for inspiring others. “Helping my clients and building lasting relationships is what matters the most,” she said. “Be yourself — don’t portray yourself as someone you’re not. Let your true self shine through, be honest and people will like you for you.”

His curiosity in home construction led him to discussions with a former supervisor who started doing home inspections and encouraged Gerard to observe the industry alongside him. In 2002, Gerard started Reliable Home Inspection Service, LLC. However, in the fall of 2006, he was given the chance to work at Protech Environmental Services in Ann Arbor, where he ran the department that specialized in indoor air quality and mold testing for 11 years. In November 2016, Gerard’s wife of 25 years died unexpectedly. As a result, Gerard shifted his focus onto his family and pursued his original plan of being self-employed with Reliable Home Inspection Service, doing home inspections full time. As Gerard continued to educate himself about the industry, he acquired a home inspection certificate from Macomb Community College, a residential builder’s license for the state of Michigan and a certification from the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI). He is also a background-verified inspector from the ASHI, which is a program that conducts background checks on inspectors entering a home to help bring peace of mind to clients. Additionally, Gerard is a council-certified indoor environmental consultant (CIEC) and a member of the Indoor Air Quality Association (IAQA). “I do my best to provide a thorough inspection of every property, but more than that, I also let my clients know that I am working for them and in their interest,” Gerard said. Most of his work comes from real estate agent referrals
or past clients. “Just like the company name states, we are reliable,” he added. Early in his career, Gerard realized how nerve-racking the inspection process can be for new-home purchasers, especially when repairs or issues arise. “I do not overhype a problem,” Gerard said. “I calmly explain the situation to the client so they can fully understand the circumstances, and I offer solutions to resolve or repair the issue. I’m sensitive to how trying it can be while purchasing a home — it’s an emotional time in people’s lives.” What Gerard enjoys most is meeting new real estate agents and establishing lifelong relationships with everyone involved in a transaction. “I love getting emails a month or so after an inspection from a client who thanks me and tells me that they have closed on their new home,” he said. When Gerard first launched his business, he was using a three-part carbon copy checklist and no photos. “Today, the inspection is on a computerized tablet along with a 40-page report and numerous photographs,” he shared.
“Flashlights are now super bright LEDs, and we’re using drones for high- and steep-pitched roofs. Beyond that, microcameras are used for hard-to-reach areas and crawl spaces. Technology has definitely advanced the home inspection process.” When Gerard is not working, he fondly carries on the memory of his wife, Laura, with their two children — Paul, 21, and Gina, 18. “My kids keep me hopping with their activities,” he said. “We do an annual vacation to the Upper Peninsula every year. We pick a base camp and explore the area for a week. Needless to say, these trips are a yearly highlight for me.” Gerard is a volunteer at Stahls Auto Foundation in Chesterfield, Michigan, and was the president of the Parents’ Advisory Association at Austin Catholic High School until his daughter graduated in May 2021. He also started the Austin Catholic Dads’ Club (AC/ DC) as a way to show students how to work on cars and teach them the basic understanding of tools around the house. Gerard is also a soccer coach for the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) VIP Program, which is a team of developmentally disabled adults, and is a volunteer for the Goodfellows paper sale. mom of two children in multiple sports,” she said. “Additionally, I have a passion for helping others, and it was during the downturn of the market when I first began, so I was in a position to help several friends who were facing foreclosure and short sales, along with warning them about many fraudulent lending practices.”
For almost 20 years, Susie Carone has been working within the real estate industry. She worked as an office manager for years, cultivating tough negotiating skills at a construction company as well as a heating and cooling company, which was then followed by a role within the mortgage industry. Her knowledge and experience in these respective fields proved to be invaluable precursors to her successful career as a real estate agent.
Originally from Dearborn Heights, Susie said her biggest influencers were her parents. “They worked very hard as entrepreneurs and owned several small businesses. My father was a master electrician and a man of all trades,” she shared. “I assisted him in building two homes while I was working at the construction company as a project manager. My father was my biggest fan and the one who I could always turn to whenever I had a question regarding anything related to my real estate transactions. The sudden passing of my father in April has been very difficult. I miss him — all our talks and his guidance to help me succeed. I wish I had more time to spend with him.”

Susie is drawn to all aspects of the real estate industry and loves to find creative ways to help her clients find housing that meets their needs as well as their budgets. “There’s nothing more rewarding than finding the perfect home for my clients,” she said. “I carefully listen to their needs and then happily hunt for a home that fits them financially and is structurally sound.”

She and her husband, John, enjoy traveling, biking, wine tasting and soaking up the sunshine. Together, they own Don Yeyo Cigar Factory, Kelly’s Irish Pub in Dearborn and Dotte Pub in Wyandotte. Susie’s daughter, Karissa, and her husband, Sean, have three children: Bannon, 8, Avery, 6, and Cameron, 2. Their fourth child is due on Christmas Day, which is the first granddaughter for Susie. Susie’s advice to up-and-coming agents is to understand the value of business planning and scheduling, and to take as many continuing education classes as possible to stay current on trends. “Continuing education and finding a great brokerage that supports you are key factors in helping any agent succeed,” she said. Susie wants to be remembered for her laugh, for her smile and, most of all, for her kindness. “I have always been shy and quiet,” she said. “However, I love to include all my friends in everything I do — never leaving anyone out and continuously trying to understand other people’s perspectives and situations; this includes my personal and professional life.” When it comes to her clients, Susie’s main concern is to always make sure they are happy and confident with their decisions. “Of course I want my clients to have a perfect home and the best available house on the market,” she explained. “But I am very mindful to be sure every home is structurally and mechanically safe, and I always advise my clients to obtain professional advice — it has to be something that will bring happiness for years to come.”

ROBERT YODER & TIM BRUCE B U I L D I N G A ‘ B E T T E R WAY ’ T O G E T H E R The origin of HomeCraft Real Estate traces back to a simple question that Robert Yoder texted Tim Bruce late one night in the winter of 2018: “Do you think there is a better way to sell real estate and help agents achieve at a high level?” This wasn’t the first time Robert had pondered this question: Inspired by his bigger-picture goal of giving back to the community, he had thought about venturing out on his own for years, but family and other life commitments kept him from pulling the trigger. Apparently, Tim was intrigued because — despite it being 11 p.m. — he immediately called Robert. Within one week, the two of them met at Hermann’s Olde Town Grille in Plymouth where they began mapping out a business plan for what would eventually become HomeCraft Team. “We both agreed that real estate should not be a solo show and that neither of us wanted our faces or names associated with the company,” Robert said. “We knew the path would be harder moving forward, but it was important to us to start a company that would be built on solid core principles, including high standards and exceptional service.” Intent on ditching “the traditional brokerage model,” Tim and Robert initially found it challenging to shift their own mindsets from the status quo — and to convince agents to do the same. However, once they began venturing into new territory, they began to uncover and establish a “better way” by disrupting the traditional real estate model and building a thriving company founded on highly efficient and well-organized processes, high standards and giving back. At the heart of the HomeCraft model is Tim and Robert’s commitment to their agents, all of whom they selectively recruit based on very specific criteria. “We ask what we can do for our agents rather than asking them what they can do for us,” Robert said. “HomeCraft takes all the marketing off the agents’ plates and lets them do what they do the best: take care of their clients.” “Our team members do not have to buy-in — if a $1 million listing appointment is in the books, it doesn’t go to the owner,” Tim said. “We diversify as our longterm goal remains the same: Invest in the team. For Evaluation. https://www.qoppa.com/pdfstudio Another element that makes HomeCraft special is its charitable giving: The team donates 10% of all their sales to the local communities they serve. “We are all about growth and giving back,” Robert said. “Although we are not the pioneers of this model, we feel it carries significant importance.” “From sponsoring small soccer teams to neighborhoods, schools and local businesses, we are currently working with the Salvation Army on our Peppermint Sign fundraiser, where 100% of proceeds go directly to the Salvation Army and local families in need. We actively participate in our communities and support them,” Tim said. “If we keep our community close to us, we have found that it gives back to us as well.” Tim and Robert have sold over $100 million in their careers, and since establishing HomeCraft at the end of 2019, the team has sold over $45 million and is currently on track for a record-breaking 2021 with over $30 million sold in the year alone. “We both put so much energy into the business, and the growth has been way faster than expected,” Robert said. “We grew over 400% from 2019 to 2020 and will grow over 250% from 2020 to 2021.”
The success that Robert and Tim have achieved through HomeCraft may have happened quickly, but it is truly a shared endeavor — a culmination of many years of hard work and commitment to their craft and their clients. More so, their successful partnership has rewarded both of them with an abundance of growth and an irreplaceable friendship. “For over 15 years, we had crossed paths as strangers, but a simple evening sparked a longterm friendship that I greatly value,” Tim said. “I’ve learned so much from our relationship,” Robert said, “We still have a long way to go, but I couldn’t imagine a ‘better way’ forward than with Tim.”
Robert, who likes to work behind the scenes in the office by taking care of all the planning aspects of the business, began his real estate career right out of high school and became one of the top-producing agents at his office when he was 19. Unsure about his career path, Robert was also a bartender throughout college. Several years later, Robert went back to school to get his master’s degree and worked as a high school educator while selling real estate part time. “As I grew up and life smacked me in the face, real estate kept calling me back,” Robert said. “After years of learning from my mistakes, a mentor made me realize that I might have to give something up in order to accomplish great things — that was when I decided to walk away from teaching and focus all my energy on growing a real estate business.” Robert also says that his journey to where he is today wouldn’t have been possible without his wife, Stacey, his children Thomas and Evelyn, and his longtime mentor and friend John Aschermann. Tim, who tends to focus his attention outside of the office by interfacing with clients, began his career as a professional pilot. “Always striving to stay busy, I aimed for real estate in 2006, passed the exam and fastened my future for takeoff,” he said. “I’m now a full-time agent and part-time pilot.” Reflecting on the many demands of the real estate industry, such as working weekends and evenings and taking midnight phone calls to negotiate deals, Tim says that his family — his wife, Joy, and children Jack and Lily — is his anchor. “For some reason, my wife holds the fort together, and my kids are full of happiness,” Tim said. “Joy Bruce is my rock star who has trusted me to start a new company and let it grow to its quick success.” 30 • December 2021
