NOTE I am willing to bet that the majority of culinary enthusiasts generally fall into one of two camps in the kitchen: They either enjoy cooking or baking. Because I don’t like to be bound by precise measurements, I can’t stand a countertop covered in flour, and I don’t have an ounce of patience for confectionery artistry, I staunchly prefer cooking over baking any day of the year — with the exception of one special day around the holidays.

The thing is, I’m usually late to the game in catching the holiday spirit, especially during the years when I volunteer to host back-to-back family gatherings. I am also typically a master procrastinator when it comes to holiday prep, shopping and decorating. One year, I was outside in the freezing cold on the eve of December 22, untangling and stringing up massive amounts of lights in a sort of Clark Griswold-inspired mania. At any rate, let’s just say that I’m not the kind of gal who’s overflowing with holiday cheer at the first sight of snow. Despite my aversion to baking, cookie day — which has been running strong for the past decade — is good for my soul. For starters, I get to spend 12+

and because we deem them the perfect breakfast cookie. uninterrupted hours with Becky, my kindergarten BFF and dearest friend whom I don’t get to see nearly enough. After Becky boisterously greets me with a hug and a “top of the mornin’ to ya!” she hauls all of her supplies into my kitchen. We then commence the cookie-day festivities by unwrapping Hershey’s kisses, chatting and sipping coffee, followed by our trusty first meal of the day: my husband’s breakfast burritos. We then review our recipe cards and laugh about how we call our double fudgy pudgy cookies “fuzzy puppies” or about the time Becky unknowingly doubled the Crisco in a batch of peanut butter blossoms, and we couldn’t figure out why the heck the dough was too sticky to roll into balls.

Throughout the day, Becky and I fill my kitchen with song and laughter and deep conversation and mixing bowls and measuring cups and cookies – so many cookies! By the end of the day, our bellies are full and our bodies are exhausted, but, like any auspicious holiday tradition, our hearts brim with joy and cheer. This holiday season, no matter what camp you fall into, where you start, where you go or what you still have left to do, may you, too, find your home filled with song and laughter, your kitchen filled with cookies and your heart filled with joy and cheer.

Then, we put our aprons on over our “Bake Like a Boss” shirts, crank up the music and get to work. Our first order of business is a quadruple batch of cream cheese sugar cookies accompanied by holiday tunes. As we frost and sprinkle the cookies, we both belt out “O Holy Night,” and we totally butcher the high notes. Then, as we churn out 100 peanut butter kiss cookies and a triple batch of no-bakes, we transition to Regina Spektor, Florence + the Machine, Brandi Carlile or Tori Amos – all our favorites that have shaped our friendship throughout the years. Then it’s onto buckeyes or peanut butter squares, loads of fuzzy puppies, magic cookie bars and Cornflake wreaths — we always dread this last one because of the green marshmallow goo it leaves all over our hands, but we continue to make them because, well, tradition,

Staging a Successful Real Estate Career with Integrity and Style

When Nancy Hackett made her debut as a part-time real estate agent in 2013, she was transitioning out of a 25-year career as a wardrobe stylist and costumer in the television commercial and movie industry. Over the course of that first year, she realized that “most people don’t want a part-time real estate agent.” More significantly, she discovered that her advertising, design and entrepreneurial experience — coupled with her capacity for building meaningful relationships — proved to be very valuable in the world of real estate. At the start of her second year, Nancy became a full-time agent, and that’s when she says that “things began to happen.”

In her previous career working behind the scenes on movie and commercial sets — styling TV commercials being her main focus — Nancy’s responsibilities included purchasing, assembling and fitting wardrobe for actors as well as ensuring costume continuity throughout production. “The atmosphere behind the scenes on a movie set is a lot of fun!” she said. “I’ve worked on movies with Miley Cyrus, Demi Moore and even Al Pacino, and was able to walk to my job for the filming of Scream 4 in downtown Northville.” Pre-real estate, Nancy — who is a longtime Northville resident — also owned Friends Unique Furnishing and Design Center, a store in downtown Northville. “As the name implies, my relationships with my customers became so much more than professional — consultations with clients turned into conversations about their homes and their lives,” Nancy said. “I’m still friends with so many of the wonderful people who came into my store.” As the film industry began to leave Michigan, Nancy, who had been involved with the local community for years and was captivated with the way that styling transformed both homes and actors, began

contemplating the next act of her career. During that time, Nancy and her husband worked with Chris Knight to list their house on Main Street. “Chris greatly influenced me to consider a career in real estate,” Nancy said. “His approach wasn’t just about the sale. This was the house where we raised our children, hosted a family wedding and extensively renovated — Chris embraced all the emotions the transition generated for us.” After Chris piqued Nancy’s interest, it was Anne Smith, a real estate agent and close friend, who recognized Nancy’s propensity to succeed in real estate and ultimately convinced her to enter the industry. Nancy wanted to work at the same company as Anne, so after she earned her license, Nancy signed on with Coldwell Banker Weir Manuel in Northville. “Anne has been an incredible mentor to me,” Nancy said. “It was such a gift to be able to learn the business not just from a Wayne County Real Producers • 17

Becca; Tara and her husband, Jon; Oliver; and grandchildren, Lila, Jonah, Lennon and Stella. “My son Derek and his family recently moved back to Michigan from California, and now we all live within 10 minutes of each other,” Nancy said. “I’ve loved having everyone nearby again!”

friend but also from an accomplished salesperson who operates with such care for her clients.” This year, Nancy reached a milestone in her career with a total sales volume of $100 million. In addition to being an Hour Detroit Real Estate All-Star and International President’s Elite recipient, Nancy is consistently one of the top agents at Coldwell Banker Weir Manuel, and ranks number nine among Coldwell Banker agents in Michigan and number 615 across the U.S. Nancy is a solo agent who is fortunate to have “the most amazing assistant,” Lisa Sygit. “Lisa is also a licensed agent, but she’s so much more: She’s my transaction coordinator, social media manager, scheduler and sometimes even my therapist,” Nancy said. “Lisa is always up for anything that comes her way, and I can’t imagine doing this without her.” Nancy says that she’s surrounded by many talented, hardworking people and considers all the photographers, inspectors, lenders, vendors and contractors that she works with as crucial members of her support team. Nancy is most passionate about home staging, which she says maximizes the benefit of professional photography by capturing a space that already looks its best. “Staging is aspirational and effective at every price: It helps buyers envision living a wonderful life in the home,” she said. “Attracting buyers and showcasing a home’s features and full potential help me fulfill my commitment to sellers — get top market value and make the experience a positive one.” Nancy’s love for home staging is also personally motivated because it allows her to work with her family, albeit in a different industry. In her previous career, Nancy worked alongside her husband, Dan Hackett, and styled most of the shoots for the commercials he directed. She also has great memories 18 • December 2020

For the past 30 years, the Hacketts look forward to summer weekends at their lake house, which is about 20 minutes from Northville. Nancy also enjoys reading — she’s a member of a monthly book club — and working out at the gym. For 10 years, she served as a board member for Leah’s Happy Hearts, a nonprofit that supported families of children with brain tumors. The charity was dissolved in 2019, but Nancy continues to support the cause as well as various other causes that are important to her friends and family. For Nancy, being a real estate agent is much more than a job. “It’s a network of relationships, a creative outlet and a source of opportunities … and it demands that I keep learning and continue to refine my skills,” she said. of working with her son Derek Hackett before he moved to California to further his film career.

production crew is together again, just in a different industry!” Nancy said.

Now, Nancy’s daughter, Tara Hackett, is her go-to for all of her home staging. Tara is a graduate of the College for Creative Studies and previously worked at Doner Company, the full-service advertising agency where Nancy began her career as a wardrobe stylist and costumer. “Tara is amazingly talented at assessing a homeowner’s space and knowing exactly what to do, and she expertly highlights a home’s best features in order to sell it,” Nancy said. Her son Oliver Hackett — along with Dan — also assists Nancy with staging and preparing homes for the market. “Our creative team and

Nancy says that home staging combines her love of interior design and costuming. “Plus, I must admit that I love shopping, and staging gives me a very valid reason to do so — I’m a regular at HomeGoods and At Home,” she said. When Nancy isn’t spending time with clients — her favorite part of her job — she and Dan enjoy quality time with their family: Derek and his wife, @realproducers

Nancy’s success in real estate, much like her success as a stylist, is a complex production that entails ongoing goal setting, skill development and persistence behind the scenes, as well as a spotlight on honesty and relationship-building. Nancy earned a leading role in the industry by staging her business on accountability and styling it with remarkable integrity.

NABIH SAAD ESTATES TITLE AGENCY

“FOR ALL YOUR TITLE NEEDS, CALL MR. DEEDS”

partner spotlight By Cecily McPherson Photos by Jermaine Buie with Perfect Light, LLC

Nabih Saad is a strong believer that his profession found him. As branch manager/account representative at Estates Title Agency, Nabih grew up with a fascination for law, which later led him to pursue a degree in paralegal studies at Madonna University. Shortly before graduation, Nabih was “pulled” into the title industry by two attorney mentors who were planning to open their own agency. That plan

26 • December 2020

@realproducers

realproducersmag.com

changed when they were approached by a much bigger, reputable title agency that proposed Nabih and his mentors take over the interest in their developed agency instead. “The opportunity to combine an established reputation with our energy and ambition was too good to pass up; this is the birth of Estates Title Agency,” Nabih said.

Nabih’s inherent success in the industry extends from his natural enjoyment for his profession. “I genuinely enjoy the work involved in researching the chain of title for a property and brushing up on the constantly changing laws and regulations of real estate title insurance. There is no bigger rush I enjoy than that of the ‘closing table,’” Nabih said.

Estates Title Agency is a full-service title insurance, settlement and escrow agency. They handle both residential and commercial properties and have an extensive background in tax-title clearance. They believe in efficiency and accuracy, allowing them to help with closing real estate sales without the long and lengthy process that typically arises.

When Nabih is not talking title, he loves to be outdoors. From running, golfing, walking his dog, enjoying a family barbecue or cruising the city with his fiancé, if it is outdoors, he is there.

The staff at Estates Title Agency has one goal: “To be the best! No exceptions! No excuses!” With more than 50 years of combined experience in real estate and title agencies, the title team has worked diligently to adapt to current times with extended hours of availability — 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The speed of the transaction is what Nabih and his team believe to be the biggest differentiating factor between the past and present. Their determination to resolve any difficult problem and handle even the most trying situations in a timely manner is what sets them apart from other title agencies. Nabih and his team take the most pride in their ability to quicken closings. To increase efficiency and the speed of the transactions even more, Nabih has extended his own availability to all agents, lenders and consumers, allowing them to contact him via cell phone after hours and on weekends. By transforming a typically long and complicated process, Nabih truly showcases the agency’s ability to handle even the most complex tax-title clearance cases.

Nabih accredits his vibrant family with teaching him the importance of tackling every obstacle in life with “utmost enthusiasm.” No matter the challenge — be it athletics or work — Nabih stands with his parents in believing that all of life’s battles should be undertaken with the confidence of success. “Some define success as being prosperous; I define success as being virtuous,” Nabih said. “Put simply, you must help others when nobody is watching, the same as when everybody is watching.” Through helping others, Nabih finds his deepest satisfaction. Creating a hassle-free and comfortable environment in the real estate community is what Nabih strives to be remembered for. MICHELLE DAVIS

ichelle Davis started learning the ropes of real estate well before she officially began her career as a real estate agent. Her unofficial real estate training began in 1986 when she purchased her first rental property, and then she continued as a “student of the school of hard knocks” as she flipped houses with her dad.

the following industry designations: Graduate, REALTOR® Institute (GRI), Accredited Buyer Representative (ABR), Certified Probate Real Estate Specialist (CPRES) and Internet Professional Certificate (ePro).

In 2005, after successfully renovating over 15 homes, Michelle earned her real estate license to save money on commissions and soon discovered the value of her renovation experience and knowledge that she had developed as a result. “Friends and family started asking me to help them out, buyers sought me out to help them purchase their homes, and investors appreciated my knowledge of the homes and of the financial end of investing — I could teach them how to avoid the mistakes I made along the way,” Michelle said. “It grew to a point where it made more sense to sell homes than to flip them. Then my business organically grew through referrals, so I slowly transitioned into real estate full time.” Since joining RE/MAX Masters as a full-time agent in 2007, Michelle has sold over 450 units and generated over $60 million in sales. She has also been recognized through a variety of prestigious awards and titles, including Hour Detroit Top 5%, RE/MAX Hall of Fame, Miracle Agent, Top 100, Humanitarian/Community Service Award and Seven Star Certificate of Excellence. Additionally, Michelle holds

Michelle grew up in the downriver area, graduated from Flat Rock High School and earned an associate degree in science from Monroe County Community College. She started her career as a nuclear power plant operator at Fermi II and went on to become one of Detroit Edison’s first female nuclear power plant operators before transitioning to substation operations at DTE. After getting married, Michelle moved to Georgia, and while raising her two young boys, she graduated summa cum laude from Kennesaw State University with a bachelor’s in business administration. Michelle says that, thanks to her parents, she had a “wonderful upbringing.” “My dad is especially influential in my life,” Michelle said. “He didn’t have any formal education past eighth grade but started his own business and built it by doing excellent work and always putting his clients and employees first — he exemplifies the saying ‘do the right things and the rest will follow.’” Having been “blessed with a good life,” Michelle seeks to give back to others through support, knowledge and financial means. “I strongly feel that what goes around, comes around — it may not always be through the same path, but it does come back.”

Michelle’s faith and involvement with her church are very important aspects of her life, especially following her divorce in 2013. “I needed to rebuild my life,” she said. “And I sank myself into my work as a way to cope and to redefine who I am.” Up until last year, Michelle operated as an individual agent. She is now in the process of building a team so that she can regain some balance in her life. “When you try to do everything on your own, you hit a point when you just can’t sell more homes without sacrificing time with your loved ones or for yourself — nothing is more important than your faith, family and friends,” Michelle said. “My goal with the team has been not only to create more balance in my life but also to allow my team members to enjoy balance in their lives.” Michelle’s team includes Megan Barnosky — a technologically savvy client care coordinator — and obviously Michelle, who brings the real estate experience and a passion for problem-solving. She is also looking for a new buyer’s agent following the retirement of her previous one. “We have great ethics and put our clients first, so we make a great group,” Michelle said. Now that Michelle is finding some work-life balance, she’s looking forward to spending more time with Michael, her oldest son who lives in Boston and works in mergers and acquisitions at Bose, and her younger son, Stephen, also known as Brother Martin, who is a Dominican Brother in the Catholic Church and living in Washington, D.C. Michelle’s partner of seven years, Daryl Kowalski, also has two children: Mason, who will be attending Western Michigan University in the fall, and Maya, a 13-year-old special-needs child. “All of our kids vary in ages and interests, but I like to ski with Michael and go for long walks and

contemplate life with Brother Martin,” Michelle said. “And we like to camp with the younger kids.”

Your One Stop Shop

Michelle describes Daryl as “an amazing man” who is “very supportive” of her career. When they find some time alone, the two of them enjoy traveling and dining at new restaurants. Michelle also enjoys reading a good murder mystery and loves all types of music and going to the theater. In addition to spending time with family and friends, Michelle likes to spend her leisure time gardening — she was a Master Gardener in 2005 — camping, hiking, kayaking and cooking. She also supports the Susan G. Komen Foundation — she completed the organization’s 60-mile walk twice — donates money from each closing to Children’s Miracle Network and regularly donates to a variety of other local organizations. “I am a firm believer in the saying ‘to whom much has been given, much is required,’” she said.

Michelle also believes that money and notoriety are meaningless when they exist apart from kindness, generosity and balance. Throughout her years in the business, she’s learned how valuable it is to admit when she’s wrong — and apologize — and developed the healthy habit of avoiding yelling matches with agents and clients at all costs. “Yelling serves no purpose and just escalates things — I do that after I get off the phone, LOL,” she said. “One of the most important things that has helped me in my job — and that other agents should strive for — is the ability to empathize: You don’t need to always agree with what your client or other agents are doing, but if you can put yourself in their shoes and understand why they think the way they do, you can help them solve their problems more easily,” Michelle said. “Money and success are nothing if you can’t achieve them by helping and uplifting others.”

celebrating leaders By Robbyn Moore Photos by Dawn Townsend Photography & Design

Robert Chubb jokingly said he is uniquely qualified to do one thing in life: real estate. He began his career in April 2002. Within two months, he had closed his first sale, and by the end of that year, Robert had acquired $1.5 million in sales volume. Eighteen years later, Robert is still at the top of the leaderboard with a career volume over $100 million and currently leading the way as CEO and team leader at Keller Williams Advantage.

ROBERT

Like other real estate agents when they enter the marketplace, Robert thought real estate would be a smart career choice because of the flexible hours, unlimited income and the opportunity to be his own boss. “I think most agents get into this business for the obvious reasons but soon learn it’s a much different program once they’re in it,” Robert explained. “This business is a servant job. Agents need to be available when their clients are available, and every

part of the transaction is time-sensitive.” Now he teaches agents how to meet the demands of the job while maintaining their schedule flexibility. Robert always had an interest in real estate and jumped right in at the age of 22. “I was 22 years old, but I looked about 15,” he said with a chuckle. “But I decided to go for it anyway.” Shortly after Robert started his career with Real Estate One, the industry shifted to online systems. While many agents struggled to keep up with the change, Robert’s youth and adaptability allowed him to embrace the changes and he became the tech trainer for the agents in his office. “I’ve always had a learn and teach mindset,” Robert shared. “At one point, I wanted to have more of an impact on my brokerage and the agents, so I left to open a boutique brokerage with a colleague. I developed a curriculum for training and coaching for that company.”

At a time when Robert felt there was a lack of resources for training and support available to agents, he received a phone call from Wendy Patton who was the operating principal of Keller Williams in Novi. “After exploring Keller Williams, I realized I was living on an island and that everything I was doing or working toward was already being done at KW,” Robert said. “I attended one of their events, and that is where I saw a whole new world of training, education and a group of masterminds who were working at an extremely high level.” After careful consideration, Robert decided that KW would be the right fit. “Keller Williams has a uniquely set up infrastructure unlike any other brokerage I’ve ever seen,” Robert said. “Wendy put the opportunity map in front of me and showed me what was possible if I was willing to work for it,” he shared.

Shortly after joining KW, Robert built an amazing group which allowed him to step into the role of productivity coach as part of the leadership team and develop a coaching program. In June 2019, he was offered the role of team leader. “It wasn’t something I had set my sights on when I joined; however, I couldn’t pass it up when it was offered to me. It has proven to be an incredibly rewarding position for me and my career.

In his role as team leader, Robert acts in the same capacity as a CEO. He oversees the entire operation of his office with the focus and responsibility on growth, productivity and retention. He also consults top agents inside and outside of KW. After joining KW, Robert said his biggest gain was having proven systems and models. “Now, I have the resources at Keller Williams to provide top-notch programs at the highest level.

Robert is most passionate about helping agents to think and operate like business owners. “When I see my agents lead big lives and achieve big results, I know I’ve done my job, he said.  “It’s so rewarding to see their success. It’s in my nature to help others get what they want. Robert finds inspiration for himself and other agents in books such as “The One Thing by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan and “Start with Why by Simon Sinek. “I merge concepts from these books with my own practical experience to help agents fine-tune various components of their business, Robert said. Robert leads his business and his life with a generous heart. He is known for putting the needs of his clients and agents at the highest priority. “I was influenced early in my career by Gail Turner and Fil Superfisky,

Robert recalled. “They showed me that by doing the right thing, no matter what, I would always find success. That advice has served me very well. Robert’s loyalty to the industry is steadfast as it has opened many doors for him and his family. “Every single thing I’ve done has led me to where

I am right now, Robert said. “If I could go back, I may have made a couple different choices to get into a higher producing environment earlier, but I do not live with too many regrets in my life.  When Robert isn’t working with his teams, he and his wife, Nina, along with their children — Henry, Sebastian and Evangeline — can be found enjoying weekend day trips and various outdoor activities.

2020 Holiday Décor home matters

By Shauna Osborne

2020 has been a unique year in many ways, so it’s no surprise that holiday decorating trends will be distinctive, as well! According to digital marketing data from Pinterest and other social networks, many Americans have been daydreaming about and planning for the holiday season this year since summertime. A time of peace, of joy, of togetherness — all things sorely missed and much desired during difficult times. People are looking to get back to any sense of normalcy and are more excited than ever to start decorating for the holidays! Recycled / budget-friendly: Though trends have been leaning this way for several years now, this year, eco- and budget-friendly décor choices are more popular than ever. Many are feeling the financial pinch right now, but that doesn’t mean holiday homes can’t be splendid; instead of decking the halls with new décor items, repurpose what you’ve already amassed from previous years and add in some DIY holiday crafts to supplement (find 31 gorgeous options here: https://www.house beautiful.com/entertaining/holidays-celebrations/g3952/ diy-christmas-decorations/). Instead of wasteful wrapping paper, swaddle gifts in fabric, cloth bags, newspaper, or craft paper. Classic / nostalgic: Ah, the good old days, when our biggest worries were whether we’d get snow on Christmas Day or which relatives would drink too much eggnog and quarrel at the dinner table. Nostalgia is a huge theme in décor this holiday season, with a focus on gratitude for life’s small things. Think of what your home and traditions looked like during the holidays growing up – what made you feel warm and fuzzy – and surround yourself with those trimmings (and sentiments!). Bring out heirloom pieces long tucked away, filling the home with love, memories, and family, especially if you cannot be with loved ones this year.

in an emphasis on quality and sustainability versus quantity. Look for simple, beautiful décor designs in neutrals that will work in multiple rooms and incorporate natural light and wood details for that comfy hygge vibe. Less is truly more. Perhaps most importantly, give yourself permission to celebrate as much or as little as you feel able to this year. Whether going all out, not decorating at all, or somewhere in between, we wish you the most joyful of holiday seasons.
