Celebrate and Share Your
Bounty
Around this time every year, I begin to think about all the fun activities — and not-so-fun tasks — that I still want to check off my summer to-do list … and then the August anxiety begins to set in. Typically, I spend a few days contemplating a last-minute weekend getaway or mustering up the energy to clean out my garage before I redirect my attention to my garden, the one thing that I can count on to beat my summer blues. Unlike the immediate pleasures of summer vacations, barbecues, fireside drinks with friends and days at the beach, my garden doesn’t instantly yield tangible rewards. Those rewards — the abundance of tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, lettuce, herbs and raspberries — require an abundance of my time and energy throughout the late-spring and early-summer months, countless hours of composting, tilling, toiling, weeding, mulching, pruning, watering, tending and nurturing. And every year, I willingly and habitually take on all of these grueling tasks in anticipation of August and the bounty that it brings. As I fill baskets with the fruits and vegetables of my labor, I realize that I’ve had a pretty productive few months even if I didn’t check all the boxes off my summer bucket list. I grow content with the harvest I have cultivated with my own two hands and look forward to garden fresh salads, sauces and purees, as well as to some new end-of-the-summer priorities: canning, pickling and fermenting. The summer may be coming to an end, but it leaves me with a bounty of long-awaited treasures to enjoy and share with family and friends. As you read this August issue, which celebrates the hard work and accomplishments of some amazing real estate professionals, I encourage you to make the most of what’s left of summer. Enjoy — and share — the fruits of your labor. Jane K. Asher, Ph.D. Managing Editor jane.asher@realproducersmag.com

Kyle Matta Striving for Greatness top producer By Jane K. Asher, Ph.D. Photos by Stylish Detroit
18 • August 2021
@realproducers
Kyle Matta’s work ethic and drive for success traces back to his first job — and first paycheck — at the age of 14. “My parents made me get a job at a young age, which taught me that I needed to work to get what I want,” Kyle said. “Ever since, I have been building on that work ethic — it drives me every single day.” Kyle’s industrious nature incited his passion for entrepreneurship and eventually led to the establishment of his car detailing business and snow removal company in Downtown Rochester. As a result, Kyle learned the ins and outs of owning and operating his own business at a young age, and he also developed a lot of invaluable customer service skills. “My business — and all the learning experiences that came along with it — definitely was a stepping stone to my successful career in real estate,” he said.
Producer as well as the #2 CENTURY 21 producer in Michigan. To date, his career volume exceeds $64 million. “I am in competition with myself to strive for greatness, and my commitment to professional development is something that happens every single day,” Kyle said. “Real estate keeps self-improvement and progress at the forefront of my mind — with the ever-changing market and the diversity of clients, the learning never stops no matter how long you’ve been in the business.”
After about four years, Kyle was ready to take the next step in his professional path, and that step just so happened to be prompted by a job posting in the window of CENTURY 21 Sakmar & Associates. “When I saw the ad, I thought, ‘why not me?’” he said. “I then took a leap of faith and dedicated myself to learning and pursuing the path of real estate.” In late 2015, 23-year-old Kyle commenced his full-time real estate career and hit the ground running, closing his first deal within a few weeks. Early on, Kyle’s biggest challenge was getting his foot in the door at listing interviews. “I had potential clients close the door after seeing me in person and tell me I did not have the expertise for the job,” Kyle said. “That quickly changed once I had the opportunity to prove myself, and I was successful from that point forward.” In 2016, Kyle reached CENTURY 21 Platinum status, and he continued to climb the production ladder in the years that followed, earning Emerald level in 2017, Masters Emerald in 2018 and CENTURION® Producer in 2019. In 2020, after selling over $25 million, Kyle became a Double CENTURION® realproducersmag.com

Kyle says that his solid foundation and noteworthy advancement in real estate stem from his relationship with Andy Sakmar. “Andy was — and still is — the best mentor in real estate and life,” Kyle shared. “He took me under his wing, provided me with so much industry knowledge and taught me that the first step to success is taking pride in your honesty and integrity.” As an associate broker at CENTURY 21 Sakmar & Associates, Kyle flies solo, but he hopes to establish a team and expand his business in the future. “What I am most passionate about in my business is knowing that the sky’s the limit for me, and with that, I’m working every day to enrich myself and others in the real estate community.” Kyle and Marionna, his wife of two and a half years, enjoy cooking, traveling and “doing spontaneous things” such as skydiving in Kauai, Hawaii, during their honeymoon and taking an impromptu trip to Bora Bora where they swam with a 40-foot humpback whale in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean. When he’s not adventuring away from home, Kyle likes to listen to classic rock, play hockey, get together with family and friends, and spend time with Barron, their 105-pound, long-haired German

Shepherd who loves outdoor time and playing in the sprinklers. Most excitingly, the Mattas are expecting their first child — a boy. “We can’t wait to take on the next chapter of our lives as we get ready to become parents,” Kyle said. Kyle also supports Wicked Awesome Wishes and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in honor of his best friend who died of cancer in 2010. Kyle greatly appreciates the flexibility of his career. “Having the freedom to work from anywhere in the world at any given time is certainly a bonus, because, after all, real estate never sleeps,” he said. He also says that being his own boss and creating his own success is one of the best aspects of real estate. Each day, Kyle, who is now 28 years old, is proud of all the accomplishments he has achieved at such a young age and feels blessed to have helped so many families — especially first-time homebuyers — successfully navigate one of life’s biggest transactions. “I put my clients first: I always have their best interests in mind and take my job incredibly seriously,” he said. “I will go above and beyond the job to make sure my clients are satisfied.” Kyle encourages up-and-coming real estate professionals to always remember that “what you put in is what you will get out.” He also advises them to swallow their fear about working independently to make things happen. “Don’t be afraid to stop and celebrate those small successes along the way,” he said. “Looking at the bigger picture will help you pave your path to success.”

BRITTON PROVISION INSURANCE GROUP Building a Business on the Strength of a Team partner spotlight By Robbyn Moore Photos by Jessica Laine Photography Photos taken at Toll Brothers - Reserve at West Bloomfield
When Britton Steele, CEO and founder of Provision Insurance Group, started his business, he recognized that he needed to do more than merely provide great insurance rates to his clients. To separate himself, he devised a strategy that would raise the bar on customer experience while also delivering the best quotes. Britton knew the first step to making his success possible would be the investment in his team. “I began creating stable career opportunities for my group,” he said. “I wanted to elevate my team in ways that built solid internal relationships and confidence in their work — people will always do more than what’s expected when they feel appreciated.”

Knowing that making the team work would be paramount to making the dream work, Britton and his team created, met and even exceeded their goals. For the third consecutive year, they were recognized by Inc. magazine as an Inc. 5000 — a list of the fastest-growing private companies in America. “We’ve accomplished this, among many other successes, due to the culture we embody,” Britton said. “What my team and I have built together has sculpted my character in return,” Britton shared. “I’ve learned something from each challenge, and I’m inspired by the individuals who have been with me on this journey.” Together, Britton said his team has challenged the industry in unique ways that reinforced their determination and desire to deliver excellence. “It may sound cheesy, but I love my team, and I find coming to work every day very fulfilling. It’s a fun atmosphere because we are all driven, yet we know how to enjoy life.”
others and continuously lift them up. At the end of the day, it’s not about me; it’s about how others are growing around me.” Today, Provision serves over 20,000 customers across all 50 states. As they continue to deliver excellence to every customer, Britton looks forward to seeing what the future holds for his team and business. For more information about Provision Insurance, please visit provisioninsurance.com or call 248-821-5074.
Located in Bingham Farms, Michigan, Provision Insurance is a Michigan-based insurance brokerage firm dedicated to finding their customers the optimal policy. They shop all major carriers to give their clients the most affordable and substantial coverage options available on the market. Provision supports those who are self-employed, uninsured, need coverage for employees or turned down by other carriers. “In my work as an insurance agent, I see a need to build a bridge: to help families, businesses and individuals connect to affordable coverage,” Britton said. “What truly makes Provision Insurance different is our inquisitive approach to improvement — asking how we can do better for our clients again and again. We’re continuously looking for new paths, new technology and new ways to serve each family.” In addition to the company’s focus on building solid teams and loyal clients, Provision offers real estate agents the ability to receive commissions for client referrals. “With applicable licenses, we are able to pay new and renewal commissions,” Britton said. “We have partnered with some of the largest real estate firms to help build this program, and it’s proven to be very successful for additional income streams, especially for high volume agents.” Britton wants to be remembered for giving people a chance to grow beyond their own limitations. “I truly believe that every person can accomplish financial security and freedom, and I am here to be a platform for that,” he said. “I define success as a state of being. It’s not a singular accomplishment — it’s a set of actions, behaviors and beliefs centered on the idea that I am here to serve realproducersmag.com

PROVING IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO START SOMETHING NEW
SIMJANOSKI
rising star By Robbyn Moore Photos by Stylish Detroit
26 • August 2021
@realproducers
t age 40, Ivica “Vic” Simjanoski made the bold decision to leave his 20-year position in manufacturing for an entirely new career. When his father — who was also his business partner — retired from the family company, Vic decided it was the perfect time to make a change and try something new; something that would reward his hard work without relying on numerous other employees. “In manufacturing, no matter how great my work ethic and drive were, I had to rely on others to achieve success,” Vic shared. “If the same work ethic wasn’t shared, I could never advance. I wanted to advance.” Vic’s family is no stranger to taking risks. When his father was 20 years old, he came to the United States from former Yugoslavia with just $20 in his pocket and a suitcase of clothes. He didn’t speak the language and knew nothing about the country. He started his own company and — with the help from another family member — he built a business that eventually employed 30 people. “My dad’s courage to chase after his dream was so inspiring to me,” Vic said. “It’s something that I admired growing up and model myself after today.” While taking a year to consider his options, Vic traveled to Ireland on a golf trip. There, he met Simon Thomas, CEO of DOBI Real Estate. During that encounter, Simon offered helpful insight into the real estate industry. Following the trip, the two stayed in contact and bonded over their mutual admiration for golf and continued their real estate conversations. After researching all his options, Vic decided to get into real estate because of the limitless opportunities for career advancement, schedule flexibility and earning potential.
Over the past year, Vic has built a team of agents who share a common goal of winning and a combined mentality of being better than yesterday. This dynamic team is known as The VS Group and, together, they play off one another’s strengths and uniqueness. Vic and his team members — Ursula Mullen, Jaimie Seitz, Vladimir Dimcevski, Joanna Tuttle, Jenna Kaltenburg, Joanna Rojas and Nancy Haller — are passionate about helping their clients and doing their best work while still finding time for team-building activities. In addition to building his team, Vic is focused on becoming a top agent in the Rail District of Birmingham, which is centrally located to DOBI’s office. “We’ve partnered with great builders, amazing architects and we’re bringing exciting new construction to the area,” he shared. Treating everyone with respect and building relationships with people are the most important details to Vic’s business. “I’m really good at staying levelheaded, even in stressful situations,” Vic said. “I’m solution-oriented and always looking for ways to go above and beyond my client’s needs and expectations.” Furthermore, Vic is dedicated to helping new agents — who would otherwise be lost in the process — navigate their way into the real estate world. “Having strong relationships with other agents and mentoring younger, newer agents are just a few aspects of what I love about real estate. Because networking is a huge part of real estate, there are always opportunities to share ideas and gain new perspectives.”
In 2016, Vic decided to join forces with DOBI Real Estate because of their fearless approach to business, technology and training – all of which aligned perfectly with Vic’s vision for his future, resulting in his decision to join the real estate group. “I was attracted to the group’s work ethic and desire to be the best of the best, but more significantly, I quickly developed trusting relationships and support that was essential to the launch and growth of my business,” Vic said. Since entering the marketplace, Vic has a career volume over $60 million and achieved seven Top Dog awards for the highest sales volume at DOBI. Vic was also recognized by the group as a top agent with the highest GCI in 2017 and 2018.

“
IF THE SAME WORK ETHIC WASN’T SHARED, I COULD NEVER ADVANCE.
In addition to helping at his office and at church, Vic supports Project Feeding Kids, which aids in providing meals for nearly 16 million children in need across the country. “Kids didn’t choose to be here, so it’s our responsibility to support them until they can support themselves,” he said. “I want to freely give my time and knowledge to others and help as many people as possible.” Vic said he finds success in the number of people he’s helped and in the legacy he’s creating for his family. Along with his wife, Jeanine, Vic’s highest priority outside of business is creating memories with his family. They have two boys — Lucas, 5, and Isaac, 3 — who love all things boys, going to the pool, playing outside, watching Disney movies and cheering for the Michigan Wolverines with their daddy. “I changed careers at age 40,” Vic said. “I want people to know that fear is normal, but you can’t let it stop you from who you want to be in life. I was able to overcome that by knowing and understanding that as long as I put in the work and believed in myself, the business would come.” Just like any new agent, Vic recalled his initial challenges of cold calling and building up his business. “It’s okay to make a change and pivot to who you’re destined to be,” he said. “I’m proof that it’s never too late to start something new.” 28 • August 2021

Shaping Seamless Experiences From Contract to Close
Deborah Hughson
behind-the-scenes all-star Position: Director of Operations Office/Company: The Robertelli Team —
What is the most challenging aspect of your job?
Max Broock, Bloomfield Hills
In this fast-paced market, my biggest challenge is making sure our clients have a smooth and stress-free experience buying or selling their homes with us. Real estate transactions involve working closely with lenders, title companies, inspectors, city building/assessor departments, etc. I want our clients to have a seamless experience with us as we work hard behind the scenes.
How long have you been working with the person who nominated you? 1.5 years How long have you been working in the real estate industry? 6.5 years What did you do before you began working in your current position?
My background is in hospitality technology, working for MICROS System through 2010. I was fortunate to be able to stay at home with my young daughters for five years before earning my real estate license in 2015 and joining Max Broock, Bloomfield Hills as an agent. What does your typical workday look like?
I am an early riser, checking emails by 6:30 a.m. and following up on anything that came through late in the evening. My days are busy with many tasks to support The Robertelli Team and our clients. My responsibilities include taking contracts from signing to past close, confirming details of listings and supporting marketing efforts, as well as working closely with clients to support their selling or buying needs. The days are fluid depending on what the team is working on. How would you describe your job in one word?
Collaboration Why do you think you excel at your job?
Real estate transactions can be complicated with many moving parts. I am detail-oriented and highly organized — perhaps a little type A — which makes for a great team member. I also love talking to and working directly with clients.
What is one thing about you that others might find surprising or interesting?
I am a second-generation real estate agent, following in my mother’s footsteps at Max Broock. When you’re not working, what do you like to do for fun?
My favorite thing to do is spend time with my daughters, my husband and our friends. We are very fortunate that we are able to travel often — planning our next adventure together is always exciting! How do you feel about being nominated as a Behind-the-Scenes All-Star?
I feel honored to be nominated by such a successful real estate professional and team leader.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Is there anything else you’d like to share about yourself, about your job or about your relationship with the person who nominated you?
Hearing and seeing clients’ excitement when they find the perfect house or when they sell their house and are moving into the next chapter of their lives. This brings such joy!
Alyse Robertelli and Candice Van Slembrouck are two professional, successful women whom I am lucky to call my teammates and also my friends.
realproducersmag.com
Alyse Robertelli, Candice VanSlembrouck and Lauren Salome all agree that Deborah is an invaluable member of The Robertelli Team: She’s an organized and detail-oriented selfstarter who always puts clients’ needs first. Alyse describes Deborah as an honest and hardworking individual who goes above and beyond to oversee transactions from contract to close. “Deborah has a great balance between her homelife and worklife and still gives us her all,” Alyse said. “She always comes to work with a smile on her face and is ready to jump into her workload.” “Deborah has the patience of a saint and handles our client interactions with patience and understanding,” Alyse said. “It is evident that she treats people with the highest level of respect and that she will do anything to assist our clients or teammates.”
Do you work with someone who truly makes a difference in the industry, in your business or at your office? Email Terra Csotty at terra.csotty@ realproducersmag.com to nominate them to be featured as a Behind-the-Scenes All-Star in an upcoming issue.

Candice Rich Utilizing Financial Prowess as a Compass in Real Estate

corporate and individual tax preparation and bookkeeping. Moreover, Candice has been investing in real estate since her early 20s. “It has been said that 90% of all millionaires become so through owning real estate — I have goals!” she said. After selling her accounting practice, Candice wanted a new career where she could bring together her accounting background, her experience as a real estate investor and her passion for interior design. From there, her real estate career was born. When Candice entered the real estate industry over five years ago, she studied the market like a stockbroker. Within her first year and a half, Candice surpassed $10 million in sales — not a common feat for most new agents. Her financial prowess and solid past relationships strongly positioned her for success. “I had a book of business — a pretty healthy one — made up of top executives, athletes and investors. I came in as a seasoned professional and hit the ground running. I also believe my drive helped to grow my business quickly.”
By nature, Candice Rich is a people person and a financially savvy maven. With many years of financial experience, she is an entrepreneur and business owner who has proudly built her business 95% organically from client referrals.
Because of her extensive financial background, Candice’s approach to real estate is a bit different than most agents. “It’s not about sales to me; I am not the sales-y type,” she said. “I prefer to build relationships and help my clients find the lifestyle that they’re after. I’m also a number cruncher, so I look strongly at the current and future market value of a property. I’m not just selling a home; rather, I’m advising my clients on their investment — more than likely one of the largest and most intimate investments in one’s portfolio: their home.” Candice’s journey into real estate came after 22 years as a private practice accountant and owning her own CPA firm. During that time, she financially consulted with small and midsize corporations as well as provided realproducersmag.com
Shortly after achieving her inaugural success, Candice joined a top-producing team. Collectively, they grossed roughly $80 million in sales that year. In January 2020, Candice moved to KW Domain Luxury Homes International in Birmingham, which is currently ranked as the #1 luxury agency in Michigan in both sales volume and top-producing agent. Within the next year, Candice plans to sit for her broker’s license and Florida license and develop a small team to begin selling in both states. Candice was born and raised in Dearborn, Michigan, a tight-knit community known during that time as “the melting pot.” It was a multicultural town of hardworking families striving for the American Dream. Candice attended Fordson High School and later went on to the University of Michigan and Walsh College. During those years, Candice was strongly influenced by her parents who stressed the importance of education, independence and integrity, as well as by her athletic coaches who encouraged leadership and discipline. “In any sport, it takes hours and hours of practice to become great; it teaches you to set goals and to push through barriers to become the best you can be.” As an athlete and dancer for most of her life, Candice was fortunate to be a part of championship teams. “I was even more fortunate to be the captain on many of those teams,” she said. “I had to earn the trust from my teammates and coaches on many levels. They trusted me to lead, to perform under pressure and to know when to make tough decisions in order to win. At the same time, it was a great opportunity to learn and accept how to lose with class and grace.”
Oakland County Real Producers • 37
Candice lives, works and invests in Birmingham. Her self-motivating personality, along with a relentless pursuit to be her best, has put Candice on the leaderboard as a specialist in the luxury market. Since her move to KW last year, and after being furloughed for several months during the COVID-19 shutdown, Candice is still on track to achieve her sales goals. “Now more than ever — with so much uncertainty — people want to feel comfortable again investing in real estate,” Candice said. “Being able to bring value to people and to advise them on how to navigate this market is crucial.” Candice’s business approach is twofold: build trusting relationships and have a proven track record of results. “Relationships are everything,” she said. “It’s important for me to establish trust with my clients as we are working as a team to reach a common goal.”
Moreover, Candice stressed the importance of becoming a local expert in your niche market. “Do the research, educate yourself in real estate law, study trends in new development, and know where the market values sit daily in the cities you represent in order to respond quickly, should it affect your clients,” she shared. “Becoming a local expert also positions you to negotiate the best pricing for your clients or to be able to advise them when to walk away from a potential bad investment.” Above all, Candice believes the most important thing when working with buyers and sellers is to simply listen. “Listen to your clients’ needs and desires. Be compassionate, as it is an emotional journey for some,” she said. “That not only provides top-quality service, but it also shows integrity.”
I’m not just selling a home; rather, I’m advising my clients on their investment.
Candice advises up-and-coming agents to understand that this is a business and that they are entrepreneurs. “You should build a network of trusted go-to professionals that will help grow your business,” she suggested. “It’s important to show up, stay focused, have a mindset of gratitude and abundance, have clarity and vision of your goals, and hold yourself accountable for attaining them.”
Although Candice has sold many amazing homes throughout the years, she said being a real estate agent in the luxury market is much more than just looking at beautiful million-dollar homes all day. “Working with a high-net-worth clientele in the luxury market involves elevating the client’s experience. They are busy professionals who rely on you to get them to the finish line. It’s important to be a concierge to them on many levels.” 38 • August 2021

Sunil Paingol
making a difference
By Robbyn Moore Photos by Jessica Laine Photography
A BEACON OF GOODWILL TO HIS COMMUNITY
Sunil Paingol’s approach to his real estate business distinctively parallels his philosophy in life: Live life with uniqueness by creating an identity in such a way that people undoubtedly realize that ignoring or leaving you is their loss. His firm belief to put kindness above everything else has made him successful in real estate, in his Indian American community and in life. In addition to his work as a real estate agent with Keller Williams Home Realty in Farmington Hills and West Bloomfield, Sunil devotes his time supporting the Detroit Malayalee Association (DMA). The main objective of the organization is to preserve and maintain the culture and heritage of Kerala, India, among Detroit Malayalees. This initiative was realized more than 30 years ago to serve a growing Indian American community in Detroit and the neighboring area while also fostering friendships, goodwill, moral, social, educational, literary, artistic and philanthropic opportunities.
42 • August 2021
@realproducers
Sunil has been a member of DMA for over 12 years, actively volunteering his time in outreach programs and cultural events. In 2014, he served as president and initiated an adopt-a-road program with the support from the Michigan Department of Transportation. Currently, Sunil is an executive member, helping with food drives and fundraising events that aid in flood relief and medical assistant programs in India. “This organization was started with like-minded people who wanted to bring together and support the Indian community in all parts of the world,” Sunil explained. “It is the group’s intention to give back to communities within the United States and underprivileged families in India.” Sunil believes everyone comes into this world with nothing and leaves the world with nothing;
realproducersmag.com
therefore, he is motivated by offering others intangible gifts that live on forever. “Giving provides the ultimate satisfaction in life,” he said. “Life is a choice between a process of aging and growing: Aging is adding years to your life, while growing is adding life to your years.” An example of DMA’s charitable work that greatly impacted the lives of others was its involvement in helping flood victims in India. In 2018, one of the worst floods in nearly a century hit Kerala, India. Over 480 people died, and 140 others went missing. Nearly a million people were evacuated, leaving close to one-sixth of the total population of Kerala directly affected by the floods and related incidents. “These were folks who lost their homes in no time and were left with nothing,” Sunil shared. “As a group, we organized a fundraiser event to help rebuild homes, provide medical supplies and other necessary donations.” As a result, DMA was able to raise $108,000. “To reach this success, the community came together as a whole — committee members, their families and other generous supporters. The reaction of seeing the smile on the faces of the people who were able to get shelter was immeasurable,” Sunil said.
Every year, DMA hosts a high-profile event where they invite celebrities and movie stars from India. It is a ticketed event that generates nearly 1,500 people in attendance. The annual fundraising affair is supported by local community members and business sponsors with a goal to raise a minimum of $50,000. This year, they are planning to raise enough money to support the educational needs of children in underfunded areas in India. Sunil’s decision to align himself with DMA is simply a part of who he is and what he believes in. “Leadership is about making others better as a result of your presence,” he explained. “I have encouraged a few of my friends to join the organization because I want my sphere of influence to have a positive impact on others.” Additionally, Sunil wants to be an example to his children by showing them the benefits of helping others, especially in a leadership role. “I want to teach them the purpose of life,” he said.
Oakland County Real Producers • 43
One of Sunil’s children, his daughter Navya, has already taken her father’s causes to heart and is a leader among her peers. A 12th-grade student at West Bloomfield High School, she is the president of the Interact Club and DMA’s Youth Forum president. This fall, she plans to study medicine in college so she can continue to help more people. As someone who unconditionally gives and respects others, Sunil wants to keep on inspiring others to do the same. “As long as I am physically and mentally able to bring about change in my work and charitable activities, I will continue to do so,” he said. “This will for sure bring a positive impact to my community.” Sunil and other ambassadors of DMA aim to bring a healthy fusion of their culture and harmony while consciously increasing focus on charitable and social activities carried out by their members.
44 • August 2021
“I have made a lot of friends in this organization,” Sunil said. “They are more than family to me now.”

beyond the book
MIKE RIPINSKI CENTURY 21 Curran & Oberski – Royal Oak BIG BEAVER ROAD
Describe your book in 7 words or less.
A murder mystery with political sub-plot What do you hope your readers take away from your book?
I hope readers will enjoy the story and the characters. Anyone from the Metro Detroit area will recognize and even relate to most of the locations as the plot unfolds. What was your favorite part of the writing/publishing journey?
My favorite part of the journey was having the final product in print and e-book, as well as receiving positive feedback from family and friends. Who helped you write your book, and/or who do you pay tribute to in your book acknowledgments?
Year of Publication: 2014 Publisher: Kindle Direct Genre: Mystery What inspired you to write your book?
My daughter Angela encouraged me when she was taking journalism classes at Michigan State. She knew that I enjoyed writing and telling stories and inspired me to go for it. What is your book about?
Dick Hagen, a retired Detroit Homicide detective, is drawn into a murder investigation in Troy, Michigan. As it unfolds, a well-known politician and his banker friend become suspects, and the motive involves a cover-up of a real estate development with undisclosed hazardous waste. The trail leads to other partners in the deal, and as Hagen gets closer, the pace quickens with a highspeed chase, a plane crash and a final confrontation in Chicago. 50 • August 2021
My wife, Dawne, encouraged me even when I wanted to give up. The book is dedicated to her. Do you hear from your readers much? What do they have to say about your book?
My family and friends were very encouraging and supportive. Reviews were generous; however, I had one Amazon review that I thought was a little harsh. This project was for fun and to see if I could really accomplish a longtime dream. I do not consider myself a literary master, and I can accept the criticism.
downtown Royal Oak and Yellow Door Artist Market in Berkley also carry it. Do you have any tips or advice for aspiring writers?
Read as many books as you can in the genre(s) that interest you. For mystery, pay attention to the dialogue and the way other writers develop a story. My favorite author is the late Elmore Leonard. Do you plan to write another book in the future, or do you currently have another writing project in the works?
I have already published a second book, “Jack’s Hot Dog,” which was loosely inspired by events and people I knew while growing up in Toledo, Ohio. It is a story of friendship, mystery and redemption that takes place over five or six decades. It is also available on Amazon and at local bookstores. Is there anything else you’d like to share about your writing process, your book or the reception of your book?
Writing is like many other pursuits or endeavors: To be successful, it takes practice, commitment, patience and creativity … and thick skin.
Where can readers purchase your book?
The book is still available on Amazon, or people can contact me directly at mjripinski@yahoo.com. A few local bookstores such as Paper Trail Books in @realproducers

ETIQUETTE T H AT E N D U R ES
Who remembers, as a child, having to sit down in the days following your birthday and holidays and painstakingly write out “thank you” cards to those friends and family members who had presented you with a gift? Though it seemed a tedious chore at the time, this deliberate, impactful practice of showing gratitude has likely stayed with you over the years, taking on various forms of expression as etiquette expectations have changed. Here are a few etiquette expectations that have retained their social value and should, in this author’s opinion, continue to be honored: BE PUNCTUAL.
While we joke about being “fashionably late” for parties and other casual get-togethers, being on time has never gone out of style. Being punctual – from the Latin punctualis, meaning “a point” – literally means arriving at the right time and the right place, demonstrating that you respect the time and efforts of the person or institution expecting you. USE GOOD TABLE MANNERS.
In these times of busy families and eating on the go, having a civil, sociable meal around the dinner table is more refreshing than
ever. While rules about which fork to use and keeping elbows off the table can be relaxed now, some conduct should never change: Chew with your mouth closed, wash your hands before you eat, and don’t reach across the table or others’ plates. EXPRESS GRATITUDE.
Whether a handwritten “thank you” note (still the gold standard), an email, or a phone call, expressing gratitude is an imperative interpersonal interaction that helps strengthen relationships and brings the person giving thanks as much gratification as the person receiving it. Whatever form it takes, your “thank you” should be personal, specific, and succinct. USE TECHNOLOGY RESPECTFULLY.
Think back to before cell phones, when taking a call necessitated stepping away from company to speak in privacy: the same rule of respect should apply today. If taking a call is necessary when in the presence of others, step away – for your discretion and to prevent any awkwardness for your companions. On the whole, try to focus on who is in front of you; texts, phone calls, and social media that can wait for later should.
