YOUR

BOUNTY

Around this time every year, I begin to think about all the fun activities — and not-sofun tasks — that I still want to check off my summer to-do list … and then the August anxiety begins to set in. Typically, I spend a few days contemplating a last-minute weekend getaway or mustering up the energy to clean out my garage before I redirect my attention to my garden, the one thing that I can count on to beat my summer blues.

Unlike the immediate pleasures of summer vacations, barbecues, fireside drinks with friends and days at the beach, my garden doesn’t instantly yield tangible rewards. Those rewards — the abundance of tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, lettuce, herbs and raspberries — require an abundance of my time and energy throughout the late-spring and early-summer months, countless hours of composting, tilling, toiling, weeding, mulching, pruning, watering, tending and nurturing. And every year, I willingly and habitually take on all of these grueling tasks in anticipation of August and the bounty that it brings. As I fill baskets with the fruits and vegetables of my labor, I realize that I’ve had a pretty productive few months even if I didn’t check all the boxes off my summer bucket list. I grow content with the harvest I have cultivated with my own two hands and look forward to garden fresh salads, sauces and purees, as well as to some new end-of-the-summer priorities: canning, pickling and fermenting. The summer may be coming to an end, but it leaves me with a bounty of long-awaited treasures to enjoy and share with family and friends. As you read this August issue, which celebrates the hard work and accomplishments of some amazing real estate professionals, I encourage you to make the most of what’s left of summer. Enjoy — and share — the fruits of your labor.

micah CHILDRESS A FUNdamental Approach to Real Estate

12 • August 2021

@realproducers

By Robbyn Moore Photos by Jacob Harr with harr Creative LLC

MICAH CHILDRESS has a passion for helping others achieve really large goals in life. For years, he was a history professor at Grand Valley State University, where he enjoyed teaching and connecting with his students. He found that his greatest reward was helping his students navigate their future plans in life. In 2013, when he and his wife, Anna, were selling their home, Micah was amazed at how much the real estate business paralleled his work as a professor. “I always thought I’d be a professor forever,” Micah recalled. “But after we sold our first house, I kept thinking about how real estate could be really fun, interesting and engaging, and how an agent’s role truly helps people reach their goals in life.”

“

I LISTEN TO MY CLIENTS’ NEEDS, AND THEN IT’S MY JOB TO PUT THOSE PUZZLE PIECES TOGETHER.

Six years ago, with the idea that he could provide solutions to his clients, Micah decided to take the leap into real estate. He aligned himself with Five Star Real Estate, and in 2019, he formed The Move with Micah Team. “I view real estate as a puzzle that has to be solved,” he said. “I listen to my clients’ needs, and then it’s my job to put those puzzle pieces together.” Micah’s love for real estate is a passion that runs deep. His approach to work is simple and fun, accompanied by his recognizable humor. In every transaction, Micah strives to make sure his clients are having a good time, especially during tough market trends. “Our team’s core value is ‘don’t be boring,’” he explained. “Real estate

is already serious because clients are often dealing with some of their biggest life decisions, so there needs to be some levity to balance that out. There’s no reason why you can’t do an awesome job for your clients while having fun. It’s like when I decided to write my Ph.D. dissertation on the circus: If you’re going to write 300 pages, do it on something fun. Similarly, if you’re going to sell $20 million in volume as a team, why not have fun while you’re doing it?” In 2018, Micah’s creativity in marketing and business led him to design a custom LEGO version of himself and of his team’s logo. “I gave it to my clients’ kids at closings as a fun way to engage the entire family in the process,” he said. Micah also made a property video where he wore a series of ridiculous outfits — including some of his wife’s workout clothes — to showcase the various features of the house. “If you worked with me and didn’t laugh, then we probably didn’t work together,” he said with a smile. 14 • August 2021

Photo by Anna Guerink with Anna Ink Creative

To enhance his team, Micah added Dave Draayer, who was originally brought on as a buyer’s agent. “I refer to Dave as my business partner because we run our team together,” Micah said. “Dave and I have similar values on what really matters in life: It’s not about money or being a top agent; it’s about serving our clients well, taking care of our families and finding ways to give back to those in need.”

One of the most rewarding aspects of Micah’s job is turning clients into friends and making lifelong connections. When Micah attended his father’s funeral after he died from cancer in January, he met with a lot of people who told him how important his father made them feel. “So many people said that my dad let others know they truly mattered,” he said. “He cared about @realproducers

people, and they felt it. It inspired me to want to do the same thing.” Originally from Hanover, Indiana, Micah has a master’s degree from Indiana Wesleyan University, a Ph.D. from Purdue University and published a book in 2018. While Micah was growing up, his parents stressed the importance of having a strong work ethic along with a firm anchor in his faith. His parents also taught him the value of family, which Micah said became more apparent to him during the pandemic. “I realized life isn’t always about work,” he shared. “Time with family is something that you never get back. When my dad passed away, it further confirmed my feelings that time spent with family is paramount.” As a real estate agent, it’s not uncommon to have a 60-hour workweek, and after the first few years, Micah found he was no different. “My business coach, Todd Anderson, was instrumental in helping me set boundaries and establish a work-life balance, which was crucial to the health of my marriage,” Micah said. Micah has since found that balance with his wife and their three children: Ezra, 6, Josie, 4, and Brynlee, 2. Together, they enjoy family bike rides, shooting hoops in the driveway or playing catch in the backyard. Additionally, Micah serves at his church as an elder and has even given a few sermons. He is also an avid Indiana University basketball fan. Micah’s team is heavily involved in Hand2Hand, a food resource for kids and their families who are food insecure. The organization provides schools with backpacks full of food, which are then given to students at the end of the week so they don’t have to worry about what to eat over the weekend. “It seems like people disagree over anything these days, but feeding hungry kids is something that everyone can support,” Micah said. realproducersmag.com

“

IT’S ALL ABOUT

MAKING MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS AND

SERVING THEM WELL. Beyond wanting to help people reach their real estate goals, Micah wants to be the reason people smile and laugh. “Just because you’re a real estate agent, it doesn’t mean you have to be serious and by the book,” he said. “I felt the same way as a history professor — I never wanted to be thought of as some boring old dude, so I broke that stereotype and created a fun atmosphere.” Micah plans on continuing to bring fun times to his real estate business for at least two more decades. “I believe in making my clients the center of the transaction,” he said. “It’s all about making meaningful connections and serving them well.” Grand Rapids Real Producers • 15

TESSA MISNER CROSBY & HENRY, INC.

AN ENDURING LEGACY BUILT ON RELATIONSHIPS & TRUST ike most people who work for an insurance business, Tessa Misner did not seek out to join the industry. Recognized for her outstanding customer service skills at her former job in retail, she took a chance on herself 20 years ago when Timothy Howard — who was the manager at Foremost — recommended that she apply to an open position in their call center. “My humble beginnings created the foundation of what I love most about my career: talking to new people and taking care of their needs,” Tessa explained.

16 • August 2021

As of January 2020, Tessa is now a personal lines account manager at Crosby & Henry, Inc. One of the oldest agencies in Michigan, Crosby & Henry has been in the business since 1858. With over a century’s worth of experience, the staff at the independent @realproducers

research available coverage for new clients, but we also go back to existing clients to offer additional coverage.”

agency are experts in commercial, home, auto, life and health insurance. Although there are a multitude of other insurance agencies within the market, Crosby & Henry sets itself apart by how relational they are with every client. “The staff at Crosby & Henry take great pride in doing a job that covers all details and aspects of getting to know a person and meeting all of their needs,” Tessa said. “Not only are we able to create longstanding relationships along the way, but we’re also allowing our clients to get to know us and the business professionals that we are.” Forming relationships and trust with clients — as opposed to selling a product — is essential to the agency. Everyone needs insurance to cover their assets, however, and Crosby & Henry takes that responsibility very seriously. “In the insurance industry, you’re paying someone with the hope that, on the back end, they are going to be and do all that they say they are,” Tessa explained. “We have been here for the long haul, so it’s given us some tools in the tool belt that train the newer staff along those same thought processes.” realproducersmag.com

As a result of being dependable and trustworthy, Crosby & Henry has created a robust referral program with local mortgage companies and with many business professionals in multiple trade industries. “We are interested in getting to know your clients and how we can take care of them in the same high caliber of service we do for all of our other amazing clients!” Tessa said. In addition to creating lasting relationships, the company has another passion: informing clients about their policies. “We believe that by educating our clients, not only do they appreciate the products they are purchasing, but it also creates an environment of preventative losses along the way,” Tessa said. “The best claim is the one that never happens, and education is key to that.”

Beyond spending detailed attention on clients and caring for their needs, Tessa likes to devote quality time with her blended family. She and her husband, Steve, have four children — Stephen, 28, Gabriel, 27, Noah, 20, and Isabelle, 19. Their kids live in several states and are in various stages of life, but when they come together, they love to simply hang out and cook. For Tessa and her husband, most of their free time is dedicated to renovating an 1890 farmhouse. “That pretty much consumes every spare minute,” she said, laughing. “When we’re tired

of that, we take weekend trips to Petoskey to shop and, of course, look for Petoskey stones.” Tessa is also an enthusiastic volunteer at Impact Church, her local church in Lowell. She leads Bible studies in her home or at local coffee shops several nights each week. Tessa wants to be remembered for her willingness to go the extra mile, for her selfless acts and for taking care of others. She strives to turn a bad situation into a positive one, and working in the insurance industry has fulfilled that desire for her. “If I didn’t love people and their stories and learn what matters to them — which is so important — then I’m in the wrong line of business,” Tessa concluded.

When the pandemic hit, the team kept a close eye on the rising cost of home insurance and the need for additional coverage on homes. They are also knowledgeable about cyber coverage. “We have an amazing commercial lines team who is continually educating themselves to specifically address this need,” Tessa said. “We not only Grand Rapids Real Producers • 17

Q&A

behind-the-scenes all-star

Going Above and Beyond to Serve With a Smile Position/Title: Director of Agent Support Systems Office/Company: City2Shore Real Estate

How long have you been working with the person who nominated you? 6 years

How long have you been working in the real estate industry? 6 years What did you do before you began working in your current position? I was working as a retail manager in a jewelry store and had my cosmetology license. What does your typical workday look like? There are never two days that are the same, and that’s part of the job that I love. I generally spend my day organizing emails, processing paperwork, following task lists set in place and

keeping my agents’ calendars clear of the paperwork so they can go out and do more profitable activities. How would you describe your job in one word? Rewarding!

Why do you think you excel at your job? I am a very organized person who can adapt to new situations. The combination of these two characteristics is ideal for my position and has proven to greatly benefit my agents. What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? Helping my agents become top producers and achieve goals for their clients. Taking ordinary people and making them extraordinary! What is the most challenging aspect of your job? Working with people who are not comfortable with

LAURA CARR from City2Shore Real Estate describes Abbey as a “ray of sunshine” who always has a smile on her face and who is always ready to help in any way she can. Laura appreciates how Abbey provides the same level of excellent service to everyone and how she handles each file with great care and attention. “Abbey is an excellent employee — a

technology. Especially since COVID-19 hit, and everything has been pushed online more than ever, it sometimes takes a little more convincing to get agents and clients to trust technology and online systems. What is one thing about you that others might find surprising or interesting? While being a part of the City2Shore Agent Support Team and now as the director, I have helped close over 1,500 transactions. When you’re not working, what do you like to do for fun? Trying new restaurants around Grand Rapids, taking my dog to local dog parks, drinking a glass of wine and spending as many weekends as I can traveling around the country. How do you feel about being nominated as a Behind-theScenes All-Star?

So incredibly thankful! It feels so good to work for such amazing people who recognize my team’s hard work. This is one of the best, most encouraging atmospheres I have worked in. Is there anything else you’d like to share about yourself, about your job or about your relationship with the person who nominated you? I love being a member of the City2Shore family! Starting in the industry with no previous knowledge of real estate and now being the director of our agent support systems has really proved that they want to help not only their agents but also their staff grow. Being nominated by Chris and Laura Carr means so much — they are such great agents, and it’s so refreshing to see how much they care about their clients. I am very excited to see how my future unfolds at City2Shore and where they can take me professionally.

go-getter and forward-thinker who has been a real asset to the growth of our business,” Laura shared. “She is always a step ahead of what is needed.” “Abbey goes above and beyond the call each and every single day and does so in a cheerful way to always put clients’ needs before her own,” Laura said. “I want to recognize her contributions to the industry because the people who are behind the face of the public do not get noticed or recognized for all that they do.”

Do you work with someone who truly makes a difference in the industry, in your business or at your office? Email Terra Csotty at terra.csotty@realproducersmag.com to nominate them to be featured as a Behind-the-Scenes All-Star in an upcoming issue.

Effective

(AND SURPRISINGLY FUN!)

Low-Impact Workouts TIME Magazine recently reported that, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics, most Americans became even more sedentary during the coronavirus pandemic than before, when only one in four adults was engaging in the recommended amount of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity. Now, for our health’s sake, it’s time to get active (and before winter hibernation sets in!) – but after months of physical inertia and high stress levels, the prospect may be daunting. Where to begin?

following activities are a great way to achieve a fun, heart-pumping workout while reducing the risk of injury. Swimming

Swimming is easy on the joints but incredibly beneficial for both cardio and respiratory endurance and upper body muscles. Best of all, you can swim year-round, no matter where you live, in heated, indoor pools! Kayaking

Low-impact workouts, at least at first, may be the answer. Fitness experts consider any workout that is gentle on the joints and prevents strain on any one part of the body to be “low impact”; the

Kayaking is a delightful, low-impact way to get outdoors and explore Mother Nature while reducing stress, raising heart rate, and strengthening the core and upper body. Paddleboarding

This cross between surfing and kayaking is a calorie-burning workout (about 430 calories per hour for a casual paddle!) for the core, back, and arms that improves balance, strength, and endurance while exerting little stress on the joints – all of this, with a view! Cycling

WHEN CONFIDENCE MATTERS…

Whether indoors or outdoors, cycling is an effective whole-body workout that strengthens quads, hamstrings, and glutes while having virtually no impact on joints. Biking is particularly beneficial for arthritis sufferers or those recovering from a joint injury because it strengthens leg muscles, which provides more support for the joints, in turn, lessening pain.

Hiking is the ultimate low-impact workout, with the potential to burn over 500 calories an hour, lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of stroke, diabetes, and heart disease, and even lower cholesterol … all while taking in the fresh air and beauty of the autumn wilderness. Opt for hikes on flat terrain to keep impact low and avoid sudden movements that may affect stability. Fall is a season of new beginnings, so whether you’re cautiously ready to get back out there and move – or perhaps recovering from surgery, injury, or illness and just need to slow down – have fun, take it easy on your joints, and try one of these enjoyable low-impact activities! @realproducers
