editor’s note

AIM SMALL.

MISS SMALL.

The same is true in many areas of life: When we lower our expectations, we’re less likely to miss them and be disappointed. However, I knew that this inexact, broad approach to a very precise, calculated game was counterproductive to my improvement. If I wanted to see some results, I’d need to hyperfocus on a small target on the board and give myself something very specific to shoot for. I’d have to train my body and my mind to hit my target and then make adjustments along the way so that eventually I could improve my precision and consistently hit my target. So, that’s exactly what I did, and slowly but surely, I began to make progress. At first, I still didn’t even come close to winning a game, but at least I was able to hit multiple singles and close out some numbers by the time Nate seized victory. That little bit of headway gave me some hope and motivated me to stick with it, and over time, I was hitting triples and beginning to level the playing field a bit. Then, with ongoing practice and sustained focus, I reached a tipping point, and from that moment on, we had some bona fide competition … and eventually, some “bully races.”

My husband Nate and I have always filled our fun time with leisure sports and games — and friendly competition. Some of our favorites include bowling, cornhole, shuffleboard, bocce ball, Kubb and Kan Jam, but our latest obsession is darts. Over the last year, we’ve played so many games of Cricket that there have been mornings when I wake up with a sore arm. Of all the games Nate and I regularly play, up until recently, darts has been my least favorite because my skills were underdeveloped, and the learning curve seemed so steep. Nate always won, or, more accurately, he swiftly crushed me game after game after game. Most games would end with him closing out bull’s-eyes while I was still diligently attempting to hit my first three marks to close out my 20s. Eventually, by game three, I’d become increasingly frustrated with my inability to hit my target, totally lose all focus and resort to aiming for the entire board.

realproducersmag.com

Even though I could rarely hit one bull’s-eye — let alone three to win the game — I continued to focus on that ever-so-tiny circle in the middle of the board. At that point, I was determined to overcome the final hurdle and become a regular contender, and months later, during an epic game when I hit a triple 16 followed by a single and double bull’s-eye, I gleefully danced my way to the chalkboard and marked my first of many wins. As you set your goals this month, rather than aiming for generalities, I challenge you to aim small — to hyperfocus on a specific goal and to keep at it until you begin to see some results. You won’t hit your mark right away, but over time, you’ll develop the necessary skills, clarity and confidence to become a contender … and eventually, a champion. Jane K. Gregg

Wysocki Leaving a Legacy Without Any ‘Buts’

When Gregg Wysocki decided to enter the real estate industry, he didn’t have a very high opinion of real estate agents. Following the failure of his business and on the verge of financial ruin, he also didn’t have many viable options for getting back on his feet. “To be honest,” Gregg said, “if I had other choices, I probably would not have become a real estate agent.” Consequently, Gregg quickly realized that his negative perception of real estate agents stemmed from ignorance, and after becoming a real estate agent — and thriving as one — Gregg made it his personal mission to “show people, indeed, how rigorous a career it truly is.” Now, after spending 16 years in the industry and selling over $100 million worth of homes, Gregg can’t imagine a choice more fulfilling than real estate. “Every morning, I am passionate about this business,” he said. “In fact, at 59 years old, I am more passionate than I have ever been in the past.”

from which one of the teams went on to win the Little League World Series in 1959 and the PONY League World Series in 1961. “I have a saying that my team often kids me about: ‘No buts left behind,’” Gregg said. “When someone reflects on a person who has passed away, they may say, ‘He was a great guy but …’ or ‘She was really nice but …’ The true indicator of my success will be when my name comes up in conversation after my life is over, and people say, ‘He was a great guy.’ Period. No buts left behind — cheesy, I know, but it is how I feel.” One of the ways that Gregg is shaping his legacy is through his partnership with #BeKindLikeGia, a local suicide awareness and prevention charity

founded by his friend who lost her 21-year-old daughter to suicide. “Nine years ago, we lost my wife’s 50-yearold brother, who was also one of my best friends, to suicide,” he said. “I partner with #BeKindLikeGia in his honor, and my wife and I intend to start our own foundation for this cause to honor his memory.” Another way Gregg is striving to make a meaningful impact on others is by creating business opportunities for his team members so that they can provide incredible lives for their families. IIn addition to Gregg, The Wysocki Group includes Marketing Director Amanda Schaub, Buyer’s Specialist Frostie Owen, Executive Assistant Kelli Donaldson and Business Coach Monica Edwards.

Gregg’s passion is driven by his strong desire to leave a legacy, one that will continue to make a difference in the lives of others for years to come. “Nobody will come to the funeral home because I made a lot of money,” Gregg said. “Success, to me, is leaving a legacy such as my father did.” Gregg’s father, a well-respected community member, business owner and recreation director in the city of Hamtramck, developed Hamtramck’s youth baseball organization realproducersmag.com

With a hyper-local focus on a niche luxury market, The Wysocki Group generates 85% of its business within a one-square-mile area. One of Gregg’s goals is to expand the team’s system and approach to become the “expert” in additional neighboring one-squaremile areas. The Wysocki Group also distinguishes itself via its diverse marketing and communication initiatives, including print, social media and high-tech, high-touch campaigns. Gregg, who has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Michigan as well as years of work experience as a computer programmer, makes market research and communication a central component

Gregg and Susan — his “partner and rock” — have been married for 34 years and have a 26-year-old daughter, Caitlin, who is in her fourth and final year of pharmacy school at the University of Michigan and recently engaged to her college sweetheart, Demetri. loves hanging out at their Rochester Hills home with their three kittens — Maisy, Izzo and Pita — and relaxing in their yard and pool with longtime neighbors and friends. They also love to travel — they’ve owned a timeshare for the past 25 years and enjoy visiting and exploring different locations together. Throughout his life, Gregg has encountered numerous personal and professional challenges; however, he doesn’t allow these hurdles to define or hinder him. Instead, he’s overcome his hardships — and kept his sight on “a big why” — through faith, determination and hard work. “By the grace of God, and unwavering support of my wife, I picked myself up from the ashes, dusted myself off — twice — and have managed to chisel out a mildly successful business,” he said. “That said, because of the storms I’ve come through, I try to stay humble and use the gifts I’ve been given to the best of my abilities. All else is beyond my control.” Gregg is adamant about continually growing and maintaining his standards, his vision and his work ethic. “Operating with mediocrity is not an option. I like to sleep well at night,” he said. “Before bed, I like to look myself in the mirror and know that I could not have done anything more to represent my clients to the best of my ability — just as I promised them I would. By remaining focused on our mission — serving as fiduciary representatives of our clients in what is, most likely, a transaction involving their greatest asset — and relying on experience, training and continual growth, success will be a natural byproduct.” realproducersmag.com

Dreadknot Services, LLC Tree Care With Deeply Rooted Values

partner spotlight By Robbyn Moore Photos by Dawn Townsend Photography & Design

Most 9-year-old boys are preoccupied with friends, recess and video games. For Jay Rhodes, however, that was the age he found his “playground” with roofing and construction. Throughout the years, until he left for college, Jay worked for several small, self-made teams and bosses who were always willing to teach and educate him. At age 19, he was introduced to tree work and found his calling even farther off the ground. He pursued an education in business management while slowly acquiring knowledge, equipment and friendships. Today, Jay is still a kid at heart who loves to climb trees. Literally. Jay is the owner and operator for Dreadknot Services, LLC, a tree care company specializing in removing, trimming, pruning, stump grinding and fine-tuned tree work that requires rope climbing techniques to go anywhere and everywhere. “A lot of people call us because most other tree companies will not take care of trees that require too much climbing,” Jay explained. “For us, that’s where our knowledge and skills set us apart. We can access any tree with man-powered techniques over equipment. Furthermore, our number one point of differentiation is our drive to get the job done right — without compromising other trees, the property or even a flower bed.” Jay and his solid five-man team bring trust and peace-of-mind to their customers. The company name was built around the promise of alleviating any worry in the job request or requirement. “When I started this company, I wanted my customers to know they should ‘fear not,’ or rather, ‘dread not,’ when they need us,” Jay said in reference to the company name. “When I’m preparing and climbing trees, I’m basically tying knots for a living, so it was a fun play on words to create the company name — Dreadknot. And I guess it’s no coincidence that my hair is dreadlocked.”

@realproducers

While Jay’s tree company has rooted itself in Oakland County, his family has lived all over the world. His father, a native of Highland, Michigan, was in the Air Force, and as a result, was relocated many times. Jay was born in Landstuhl, Germany; his brother Vince was born in London, England; and his sister Deana was born in Marquette, Michigan. Jay attributes much of his success to the support he receives from his family. “Nothing I have accomplished would have been possible without my family,” he said. “I am consistently blown away by how supportive and involved my parents are in each of our lives. As a family, we look after one another and enjoy working together. People often say you shouldn’t work with family, but I feel that’s all we have ever done.”

But don’t let Jay’s hairstyle fool you. Behind the hippie, dreadlock persona is a skilled, hardworking, professional tradesman who brings efficiency and care to every project he does. He is the person you speak to on the phone, the one who is creating the quotes and attending meetings, and the guy who shows up on the site, doing the work. He treats every property like it’s his own and goes to great lengths to ensure his team is doing the same.

feeling of doing your best, working hard and completing a difficult task,” he said. Jay relates this mentality to his years as a wrestling coach, a CrossFit trainer and a musician. “I’ve had wrestlers lose a match but still perform successfully. I’ve played successfully to a nearly vacant audience, and I’ve successfully completed jobs where no money was made.”

Even if he was a millionaire, Jay said he would still do tree work because he truly finds it fun. “I have several capable young men who are seeing the fun amidst the hard work,” Jay shared. “If we can continue to fuel that notion as time progresses, I feel this company is going to see a lot of smiling faces in its future.” Stay connected with Dreadknot Services, LLC on Facebook and Instagram, or call 248-884-1681 for more information.

While tree care has been happening for thousands of years and helps to maintain communities, homes and gardens, it’s still a complicated, high-risk business. “By nature, tree work is a relatively destructive process,” Jay said. “But that doesn’t mean you should destroy the environment around the work. We go the extra mile to provide quality over production.” This unique attribute has customers praising the company’s work. “Hands down,” Jay said, “the most fulfilling thing about the tree industry is what it has — and continues — to teach me. I have learned physics, patience, team development, stress management, motor mechanics and time management. I am a student of the profession, and I will continue to learn all that I can.” Jay’s definition of success is measured by the amount of effort and involvement a person gives. “No amount of money or praise can replace the realproducersmag.com

Jack

Apap rising star

By Robbyn Moore Photos by Sasha Marceta with Skyview Experts

HARDWIRED TO FAMILY AND CAREER When Jack Apap graduated from the University of Dayton in May of 2016, he realized his interest in real estate was more than a summer job helping his dad distribute property flyers and setting up For Sale signs. He discovered that his true enjoyment in life was home renovation and restoration, and helping people achieve homeownership success. Born and raised in Bloomfield Village, and a graduate of Birmingham’s Ernest W. Seaholm High School, Jack decided to follow in his parents’ footsteps and join the family team at The Apap Realty Group at Signature Sotheby’s in Birmingham. In just three-and-a-half short years, Jack has achieved a career volume of $31 million — $14 million of which he generated last year. During his first few years in the industry, Jack earned the Signature Sotheby’s bronze and silver medal and was recognized as an Hour Detroit Real Estate All-Star in 2018 and 2019. “I received my real estate license during the summer of my junior year at college,” Jack shared. “During my time off from school, I used to work for my parents, and I began to learn the ins and outs of real estate. However, once I started my real estate career and began to build relationships with people, I could see that real estate was suited for me beyond

connecting to what my parents had created; real estate was, and still is, a perfect fit for my personality.” By nature, Jack is a guy who loves to be on the move. “I cannot imagine sitting at a desk for nine hours straight every day,” he said. “I love the diversity that each day brings. Whether it’s the people or the homes or simply the scenery, having the ability to be on my feet and create my own opportunities is what makes real estate so unique. I can honestly say I learn something new every day — not many other industries can say the same.” The enthusiasm Jack has for his real estate career is reflected in the time and attention he pours into his business. “It’s so gratifying to find the perfect home for my clients,” Jack said. “I’m sure most agents love when clients purchase a home on the first day of showings, but I believe the most rewarding part of my work comes after a relationship is built and a perfectly-matched home is found. The joy that comes from hard work and tenacity is priceless.” As with many young, eager professionals, Jack’s dedication to his work is full throttle and often met with the challenge of knowing when to turn “it” off. “I love my job; however, I have a habit of working 24/7,” he said. “Luckily, my entire family is in the business, so we get quality time together — like it or not. However, my parents just became next-door neighbors, so this might be getting a little too close for comfort,” Jack said, laughing. The Apap Realty Group has six active agents. Jack’s parents, John and Bridget, founded the unique family-based business more than 20 years ago and have remained consistent in its sales and service since its inception. “My parents have definitely influenced me in a major way,” Jack shared.

@realproducers

“It has been very inspiring watching how they built their business from scratch to becoming top producers in the area. And never once have I felt pressure from them to join the family business; they have always supported my choices, ideas, dreams and goals.” When Jack does break away from his work, he spends much of his free time with his fiancé, Megan, or running half marathons. He also enjoys hanging out with his friends and playing in a hockey league at Troy Sports Center, a men’s softball league in Southfield and squash at the Birmingham Athletic Club. When time permits, Jack also goes house hunting with his older sister Mary Clare — who is also an agent at the firm — and vacations with his family in Florida and Northern Michigan. Along with the entire Apap family, Jack is most passionate about his work supporting their recently launched Paul C. Apap ALS Foundation, a nonprofit organization that is named after Paul Apap, who was Jack’s uncle and like a second father to him. Paul was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), which is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease in 2009. “For 10 years, my uncle fought this disease with a positive attitude,” Jack shared. “He was the most selfless person I have ever met. He kept his humor at all times and lit up a room everywhere he went.”

The organization is committed to lessening the expenses to families affected by ALS, which often amount to nearly $200,000 annually to care for a single patient. They additionally donate to the ALS Therapy Development Institute to help find a cure. A portion of every Apap agent’s commission goes to the foundation to provide the necessary financial support to ALS patients and their families. “We fulfill this goal by providing the specific equipment and services needed to assure quality patient care and comfort for the entire family,” Jack said. “My uncle Paul would say ALS is not an incurable disease: it’s an underfunded one.”

Jack’s uncle, along with his aunt and cousins, all struggled with ALS and were motivators for Jack to help make a difference. “My relatives fought this horrible disease with smiles on their faces and made the best of every situation that was thrown their way,” Jack said. “They are true inspirations to me.” Becoming a real estate agent helped Jack put his renovation and restoration dreams into a reality. “If I was not in the business, I would not have worked with contractors and investors who showed me the tricks and trends in the industry,” Jack said. “Through the knowledge I have

”

acquired from them, I was able to understand the renovating process and put it into action. I have now flipped several homes throughout my real estate career and feel confident about my goals moving forward.” For Jack, success means being consistent every day and never settling for anything but the absolute best. “I attribute my success to hard work and persistence,” he said. “But at the end of the day, we work in a service industry, and therefore, anything I can do to make my clients’ experience more enjoyable is a good day in the office.” 30 • April 2021

ANDY

BRINGING OUT THE BEST IN PEOPLE

SAKMAR

36 • April 2021

@realproducers

In 1975, after spending three years as a part-time real estate agent, Andy Sakmar became a victim of a slowdown in the tool and die industry and was laid off from his full-time job as an estimator. As a result, Andy, who had grown increasingly passionate about real estate, seized the opportunity to change his course in life. “I knew I wanted real estate to be my life’s work,” he said. “So, I obtained my broker’s license and started my own real estate firm.” Today, after having spent 48 years pouring his heart and soul into the industry, Andy’s acclaim continues to emanate in CENTURY 21 Sakmar & Associates, where he served as associate broker for 45 years before he sold the company to Chris Hendrix in 2019. “We are truly defined by our agents as being a family. We all encourage each other and share our strengths with each other,” Andy said. “We even sing, but that — along with Sakmar Dollars — is a story for another day.” Andy has garnered the respect and admiration of his clients and colleagues by conducting his business with remarkable honesty and integrity. “I have always held myself to a high ethical standard and strived to treat everyone fairly,” he said. “I always give the $100,000 buyer and seller the same level of service as the $1 million buyer and seller.” Andy, who has sold an excess of $150 million throughout his career, says that his greatest reward is helping agents and clients achieve their dreams and goals. “The best part of this business is knowing that you did something that was appreciated by your fellow man,” Andy said. “And you can never leave out the thrill of the deal — that’s pretty great, too.” Andy grew up in the Van Dyke-Lynch Road area on Detroit’s east side and says that his father played an important role in shaping his morals, ethics and work ethic. “My father was very inspirational and full of encouraging anecdotes,” Andy said. “Some of his favorite words of wisdom were ‘What man can imagine, man can do’ and ‘A man without an aim is like a ship without a rudder, aimlessly drifting at sea.’” realproducersmag.com

In addition to the memorable guidance he received from his father, Andy is forever grateful for his wife Ann who died of leukemia in 1988. “Ann was very encouraging and supportive in all my endeavors,” he said. “After I started the brokerage, which was during the era of stay-at-home moms, she immediately sought employment to help supplement our income.” Ann eventually became the bookkeeper at Sakmar & Associates, where she worked alongside her husband until her untimely passing at the age of 46. “Ann was a woman who did the right thing all the time — I have always tried to conduct my brokerage in the same matter,” he said. “My last, but certainly not least, mentor is my friend and business partner Lawrence Smith,” Andy said. Andy is the sole proprietor of Sakmar & Associates, but he and Lawrence accumulated a number of properties together throughout the years. “Lawrence had faith in me, and without hesitation or reservation, he helped me out financially during turbulent times in our industry — he is a true friend indeed,” Andy said. Above all else, Andy pays tribute to the talented and local agents who helped build his business and shape his legacy. “My most valued assets were the agents — years ago, they came to work for me under my banner, and many of them are still here after 20 and 30 years or more,” Andy said. “I feel extremely blessed by the people who have chosen to be associated with me.” Oakland County Real Producers • 37

“ And those people — the many agents who proudly work under Andy’s banner — have undoubtedly been equally blessed by his leadership, mentorship and friendship. “I’ve been a real estate agent with Andy for 25 years and couldn’t have asked for a better boss — he’s been one of the best role models I have had in my life,” said Irene Gatt. “Andy’s the most honest and caring individual anyone could ever work for. I don’t know anyone who is more knowledgeable about real estate — he’s my go-to person.” Associate Broker at CENTURY 21 Sakmar & Associates Don Robinson, who was hired by Andy in 1978, echoes Irene’s sentiment. “Andy taught me that honesty, integrity and treating people the way I wanted to be treated are just as important as hard work,” Don said. “Just about everyone in Rochester knows Andy, and in over 40 years of working with Andy, I have never heard anyone say anything bad about him!” Phil Cini met Andy in 2015. At the time, Phil had just retired from a 32-year career in media marketing and was looking to start a second chapter in real estate at the age of 56. “I have worked with many great corporate leaders at some very progressive companies, so I know good leadership when I see 38 • April 2021

The best part of this business is knowing that you did something that was appreciated by your fellow man.” it,” Phil said. “Andy is a leader who understands how positive motivation enables individuals to obtain their greatest achievements in real estate and in life. Andy is a legend because he is a realistic problem solver who makes everyone involved feel good about their decisions … and makes everyone feel like a winner.”

Now that Andy has passed on the Sakmar & Associates torch, he’ll be spending his winters in Florida and his summers at his up-north cottage, where he enjoys fishing and golfing with his family: daughter Loretta, son Michael and two grandsons. Andy’s passion outside of real estate is Thoroughbred horse racing — since 1976, he has attended every Kentucky Derby with the exception of about four. Andy also likes to travel to Las Vegas at least once a year. Although real estate no longer dominates Andy’s dayto-day life like it once did, he continues to pop in the office on a weekly basis, sell houses and pass on a lot of referrals. He may have officially retired from his post as broker/owner of Sakmar & Associates, but he shall forever be the dignitary behind the mighty Sakmar banner — and the cherished leader who made bringing out the best in people his full-time focus. “I leave you with the words that I read every day from the plaque on my desk: ‘The task of a leader is to get his people from where they are to where they have not been. The ultimate leader is one who is willing to develop people to the point that they eventually surpass him in knowledge and ability. The final test of a leader is that he leaves behind him in other men the conviction and the will to carry on,’” Andy said. “In signing off, I leave with the feeling of mission accomplished.” @realproducers

SoniaWARREN behind-thescenes all-star

Removing the Stress From Every Move Title: National Account & Consumer Move Coordinator Company: Morse Moving & Storage with Allied Van Lines How long have you been working with the person who nominated you? 3 years What did you do before you began working in your current position?

I worked as a restaurant manager for over 20 years and then switched to real estate and worked as a real estate agent for about six years. What does your typical workday look like?

My daily responsibilities include setting up and coordinating corporate relocations from beginning to end and coordinating consumer cross-country and local moves. My goal is to make sure that every move — whether it is a corporate account or a consumer move — exceeds the shipper’s expectations. How would you describe your job in one word?

Rewarding Why do you think you excel at your job?

I enjoy working with people and helping them start the next chapter of their lives with their new home. It means a lot to me that I give people an amazing moving experience, so I do everything in my power to make sure everyone has a great experience they remember for a lifetime.

40 • April 2021

@realproducers

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

The most rewarding aspect of my job is when I can alleviate as much stress from the shipper as possible and when they feel comfortable leaving the move to me and our team. What is the most challenging aspect of your job?

My job can be very challenging at times, but my goal is to make sure the shipper does not feel stressed, nervous or anxious. If I cannot accomplish this, then I like to know how and where the move went wrong. I get frustrated when I am unable to fix something, so I search for all possible solutions. Sometimes, I may even spend too much time trying to ensure that a single move is perfect. What is one thing about you that others might find surprising or interesting?

My grandmother was a Rosy who worked at the World War II bomber plant near Ypsilanti and then became a real estate agent. She won several industry awards throughout her career and worked in real estate until her mid-70s. My grandmother is the reason why I love real estate so much. I used to stuff envelopes, sit at open houses and answer phones with her, and I loved every second of it. When you’re not working, what do you like to do for fun?

I enjoy spending time with my two daughters and my dogs or binge-watching a good TV show. How do you feel about being nominated as a Behind-the-Scenes All-Star?

I feel honored and grateful to be nominated. Whether or not I am chosen, it is rewarding to know that someone I work with thought of me for this and took the time to nominate me. Is there anything else you’d like to share about yourself, about your job or about your relationship with the person who nominated you?

A few years ago after I was diagnosed with some issues that caused me to stop working as an agent, I found a position where I could work behind the scenes and still help people with one of the biggest decisions in their lives: moving. Kyle and I work together as a team, and we are both extremely passionate about what we do. We are patient and share the same goal: to ensure every move is a success.

realproducersmag.com

According to Kyle Meagher, district sales manager at Morse Moving & Storage, Sonia is a rock star who does everything she can to ensure that each customer’s move is stress- and anxiety-free. “It was very important for me to recognize Sonia because she has a very tough, exhausting job,” Kyle said. “A lot of her work goes unnoticed, and I wanted to make sure she knows that I appreciate everything she does for me and the company.” Sonia goes above and beyond in so many ways, but what Kyle appreciates the most is how well she interacts with customers. “I appreciate the time and effort Sonia takes with each individual customer to ensure they are properly taken care of, and I respect the fact that she gives it 110% every single day,” Kyle said. “She is very patient with our customers and empathetic to what they may be going through. Sonia is readily available any day or time to answer customers’ questions — she is an example of an ideal employee.” Kyle says that Sonia carries herself in a very professional manner and never lets her emotions get the best of her. “It’s a testament to her character and how strong of a person she really is,” he said. “I’m forever thankful for her hard work.”

Do you work with someone who truly makes a difference in the industry, in your business or at your office? Email Terra Csotty at terra.csotty@realproducersmag.com to nominate them to be featured as a Behindthe-Scenes All-Star in an upcoming issue.

Carollo Andrea

FOSTERING A STRONGER ‘FUREVER’ HOME MARKET IN SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN

Three years ago, Andrea Carollo made a trip to PetSmart to purchase some wet dog food for her Yorkie, who had just undergone dental surgery. As she stood in the checkout line, she felt “something” staring at her and then locked eyes with “Bob” — a funny-looking, tailless cat and former stray awaiting adoption from Animal House of South East Michigan (AHSEM). “There was just something about Bob, who I ended up adopting and renaming Lord Cabbit,” Andrea said. “He proved to be such a wonderful addition to my life, and the experience inspired me to give back.” Shortly after, Andrea, who has always been an animal lover, began volunteering with AHSEM, a 501(c)(3) organization and no-kill animal rescue that works primarily with cats and dogs through adoption, owner assistance and community education. Andrea is extremely grateful for everything she has, and she’s especially grateful for her “fur children.” In addition to Lord Cabbit, she adopted Jagger, a special needs cat who was rescued by AHSEM. Andrea also has three dogs: a 15 ½-yearold Yorkie named Birkin and

home. Since then, several of the Port Austin cats have already been successfully adopted.

two rescued Greyhounds named Jypsiere and Massai. Massai is a tripod and cancer survivor. “Volunteering with AHSEM offers me the chance to give something back to the community and make a difference in the lives of many animals in need,” she said. “I strongly believe in AHSEM’s mission — it is a no-kill rescue. Contrary to what has been shown in the media, not all Michigan shelters are actually no-kill shelters.” Andrea also applauds AHSEM’s Foster-to-Adopt and no same-day adoption policies, which help to ensure best fit matches and mindful “furever” adoption decisions. As an active AHSEM volunteer for over two years, Andrea regularly cleans and cares for the adoptable cats at the organization’s adoption location at PetSmart in Royal Oak. She has also participated in several cat welfare missions, including a memorable one in Port Austin that resulted in AHSEM trapping and rescuing 15 cats over the course of several days in January.

Prior to volunteering with AHSEM, Andrea says that she was unaware of how many animals are in need of help and how those animals in need include not just strays but also the feral cat population. Occasionally, AHSEM comes in contact with young kittens that can be socialized or a friendly adult cat that can be adopted, but the majority of feral cats in a colony are trapped, neutered and then returned to their territory where caretakers provide them with regular food/shelter. “Feral cats cannot be adopted into a home as they are wild. TNR or TrapNeuter-Return is the only method proven to be humane and effective at controlling feral/stray cat population growth,” Andrea explained. “TNR stabilizes the number of cats as a cat can have three litters a year.” In addition to her involvement on the ground level of the organization, Andrea served on the planning committee for the inaugural AHSEM Pet Fashion show in 2019, which was the organization’s first big fundraiser to date. At the event, both owners and

their pets were dressed in costumes as they strutted down the runway to compete for “Best of Show.” Max Broock, REALTORS®, where Andrea has been an agent for over 17 years, provided the use of their Ferndale office space free of charge, and the event drew a full house and attracted local news coverage. “Max Broock - Real Estate One has been very supportive of my charitable efforts,” Andrea said. “Gigi Debbrecht, one of my colleagues, even walked the runway with her pup, Calvin.” “I am proud to have been a part of the planning committee that helped make it such a success,” Andrea said. “We keep getting asked when the 2020 event will be held, but due to COVID-19 concerns, we have not yet announced the 2020 fashion show date.” Given her charitable leadership and experience, Andrea advises up-and-coming agents to take action in their communities. “A lot of people think someone else will take care of it; others hide behind social media and send ‘thoughts and prayers,’ but is that really making a difference?” she asked. “Seek out an organization that you have a passion for and get involved. Don’t be someone who just says that they care — do something about it.”

“The situation was especially concerning because several house cats had been forced outside of the house following the death of their owner and sale of their home,” she said. “The new owners moved into the home and were surprised to notice multiple cats attempting to gain entry, and it was during this past winter when temperatures were very cold.” After Andrea and her fellow volunteers safely rescued all the cats, AHSEM saw that each cat was vetted, spayed/neutered and placed into a safe foster realproducersmag.com

Oakland County Real Producers • 45

As both a real estate professional and an animal activist, Andrea does not shy away from challenges and isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty in order to achieve a goal. “It might not be the most glamorous task, but if it needs to get done, I will get it done,” she said. “This is true in my business, my volunteering, my relationships and even in my extracurricular activities of marathons and triathlons. Good things don’t come easily. Sure, even the fools get lucky sometimes, but it takes hard work, integrity and determination to achieve long-term success.” Andrea, who believes that volunteering is good for the body and mind, says that she will definitely be involved with animal rescue for the rest of her life and plans on increasing her volunteer time after she retires from real estate. “I am proud to know that through my volunteering, I have played a small part in the successful adoption of each animal into a loving ‘furever’ home,” she said. MARCY SOUFRINE agent spotlight

By Robbyn Moore Photos by Jessica Laine Photography

FINDING HOME IN FRIENDSHIPS AND IN A CAREER

In 2001, after the events on September 11, many companies were facing layoffs and forced shutdowns. As a result, Marcy Soufrine was laid off from her job and found herself searching for a new career at a time when there weren’t too many jobs to be found. To find the security she desired, she was advised by a friend that the only way to find job security was to create a career of her own. With that thought in mind, Marcy’s mother — who was a real estate agent in the ‘80s — suggested to her daughter the idea of becoming a real estate agent. Given Marcy’s personality — which thrives on building and maintaining relationships, coupled with her independent spirit and can-do attitude — a profession in the real estate industry was a perfect match. “Honestly,” she said with a laugh, “I just wanted to find something that would allow me to talk to people all day, every day.” On her first day in the business, Marcy spoke to a friend who was interested in a house and wanted to look at it. After touring the home, her client immediately wanted to make an offer. “I didn’t have a clue as to what I was doing,” Marcy confessed. “So I turned to my broker, David Botsford, and a few coworkers to help me put the deal together. Coincidentally, the listing agent is now a colleague of mine and has since become a good friend and mentor.” For nearly six years, Marcy continued to immerse herself in the business: learning from others, networking and creating a strong presence in the industry. When the real estate market began to crumble, Marcy moved to Los Angeles to expand her career and to pursue a dream of working in television. While there, Marcy reconnected with a real estate friend who was a Michigan native and had grown his real estate business into one that catered to celebrities and athletes. This gave Marcy an idea. 50 • April 2021

partners, colleagues and office administration staff,” she shared. “I consider all of these people team members and friends. Together, we encourage, inspire and lift each other up.” Along with Marcy’s strong work ethic and self-described “elephant skin,” she understands the importance of having mentors and colleagues who help her stay focused on her goals. “Having trusted business coaches and accountability partners are very helpful,” she said. “One of the greatest assets to the Soufrine Team is Pauline Izrailov, a lifelong friend who possesses a wealth of experience in new construction, a great deal of knowledge about school systems, a remarkable talent in public relations and incredible compassion for customers.”

Prior to getting into real estate, Marcy produced community programming for local television productions. While her real estate business was doing well in California, Marcy was still very passionate about the television industry. “Hearing of my friend’s interaction with high-profile clients and the types of homes they buy gave me an idea for a show that would allow people to see how high-profile clients live,” she said. “So I shot a sizzle reel and pitched it and eventually sold it to HGTV.” Additionally, Marcy worked on home renovation and decor-type shows with Thom Filicia from “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” and HGTV star David Bromstad. As a result of her production success, Marcy began working with celebrity and athlete clientele. After nearly eight years in California, Marcy began to long for home. “I missed the seasons, my friends and family, and the ease of living in Michigan,” she said. “I realized that my interpretation of ‘living the dream’ — as they say in Hollywood — was living on a lake in Michigan.” Marcy returned home to continue her real estate career with Keller Williams. Refreshed, refocused and reenergized, Marcy was ready to reinvest in her Michigan business and clients. With her uplifting, positive attitude, she took her career to the next level by helping her clients achieve their real estate dreams. “I am at my happiest when I’m helping people get what they want,” she said. “Whether it’s selling, right-sizing, buying a home for the first time or acquiring a family vacation cottage, I am truly living my dream by helping others fulfill theirs.” Her intangible skill to form relationships is a hallmark of Marcy’s that comes natural and easy. Through a collaboration of friends in real estate, Marcy has found mutual support and encouragement. “I have excellent relationships with my mortgage and title realproducersmag.com

“

Whether it’s selling, right-sizing, buying a home for the first time or acquiring a family vacation cottage, I am truly living my dream by helping others fulfill theirs.

Beyond making a difference in real estate, Marcy finds strength through volunteering. “As a young girl, I was influenced by my grandparents, who generously gave their time to others,” she said. “Their kind hearts and their spirit of being generous with their time was something I was always grateful for and admired.” As time went on, Marcy was inspired to make a difference as a volunteer for the Jewish Family Services/Jewish Federation. She drives for Meals on Wheels and Kosher Meals on Wheels and helps seniors learn how to use iPads. When she lived in California, Marcy volunteered for Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters and Camp Max Straus, which guides at-risk youth to achieve their full potential through the creation of art and by playing sports.

”

“Giving to others makes me feel connected and humbled,” Marcy said. “There is always someone who needs us and our time, so I do my best to be generous with it. I find the more I volunteer, the better I feel — it lifts my spirits.” Marcy’s friends truly are her family. Through everything in her life — world events, new careers, divorce, major moves across the country — her friends have stood by her side. Together, they enjoy boating, creating art, helping others and celebrating life. Moreover, her mother Karen has been Marcy’s constant “rock” and her greatest supporter. They spend quality time together by bargain shopping, playing cards, watching movies, reading, making jewelry and doing home improvements. For Marcy, real estate will always be a part of her life. “It has become a part of who I am,” she said. “There will always be good times and bad, but if you love this, you have to stick with it and keep working on your relationships. Some of my most challenging clients have become my strongest advocates. I have learned over the years that when people are angry, they aren’t really angry at me. It’s important to have perspective and remember that the homebuying and selling process can be one of the most stressful life events people will ever go through. Therefore, it is imperative to be kind, compassionate and really listen to the things your clients are saying and not saying, regardless of their price point.” 52 • April 2021

Marcy believes it’s okay to not have the answers to everything but to have an open mind and be willing to learn something new with every transaction. “Be curious, ask questions, read, learn and always work on yourself and your skills,” she advised. “It’s smart to find answers on your own before creating an emergency for somebody else. And above all, be kind! Currently, Marcy is serving as secretary on the North Oakland County Board of REALTORS® and is an MLS committee member. Since launching her real estate career nearly 20 years ago, she has represented everyone from athletes and entertainers to first-time homebuyers, active military personnel, veterans and seniors. “We are all human, and we all care about the same things,” Marcy said. “No matter who you are or where you’re from, home is a place to find happiness, inner peace and comfort.” @realproducers

Here in the U.S., we are just over a year and counting of COVID-related lockdowns and restrictions, and even with the development and fledgling distribution of promising vaccines, we are likely looking at many months more of uncertainty and disruption, according to health officials. This “new normal” way of life has become a fact of life, and Americans are coping in a variety of ways: working and schooling from home, connecting via Zoom, embracing the outdoors, and finding new ways to unwind at home. An unfortunate, and not entirely unexpected, byproduct of the pandemic has been a sharp increase in alcohol consumption, up by more than 14% for men and 17% for women, with distressing self-reported upticks in binge-drinking (as much as 40%), according to reports from late 2020. Substance abuse research trends show that Americans tend to drink more during and in the wake of nationwide traumatic events (e.g., after 9/11, the Great Recession) as a coping mechanism. Current alcohol consumption trends are particularly worrying in parents, according to The Washington Post, who have been hit with the quadruple whammy of employment insecurity / pivoting to remote work, isolation / lockdowns, fear for their own and loved ones’ health, all the while providing schoolwork assistance and childcare due to closed schools.

Quarantini… About That

EXPERIENCED ATTORNEYS. INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS.

In short, Americans are drinking more to cope with the pandemic, they are drinking alone (since socializing is mostly unavailable), and experts say this could have long-lasting impacts on our society. Further, the World Health Organization warns that alcohol consumption “compromises the body’s immune system and increases the risk of adverse health outcomes. Therefore, people should minimize their alcohol consumption … particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.” April is National Alcohol Awareness Month, presenting an opportunity to increase our awareness of alcohol addiction, so, in that spirit, here are a few suggestions for curbing unhealthy drinking habits, whether developed during the pandemic or before: • Observe your drinking: With honesty and without judgment, take stock of when and why you drink. Daily or for special occasions? When you’re feeling stressed? Next, track how much. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services defines moderate drinking as “up to one drink a day for women or two drinks for men.” Keep in mind: A glass does not always equal “one drink,” depending on how much and what is in the glass. • Change your habits: Sip rather than gulp, eat while you drink, and practice drinking a glass of water between alcoholic drinks, which also improves hydration. Instead of a daily happy hour, substitute with another pleasant activity, such as taking a walk or indulging in a show you enjoy.
