editor’s note
Hats Off to the
2021 RPWC BEST-IN-CLASS HONOREES!
School’s out for summer, and we’re really excited to close out the school year by celebrating Wayne County’s best and brightest young real estate professionals of 2021!
They all distinguish themselves in different ways but are all distinctly impressive, and that’s why we are so proud to pay them tribute.
The BEST-IN-CLASS honorees featured in this first-of-its-kind special issue embody the new school of real estate. Equipped with drive, talent, mad technology skills and passion, these individuals, all of whom are 35 or younger, are eager to learn, serve, lead and do good in the industry: Their personal and professional investment in real estate — their commitment to clients and colleagues — showcases their value and assures us that the future of the industry is in good hands.
I want to thank everyone who took time out of their busy schedules to submit nominations: Your promising, young colleagues admire you, value your ongoing support, and appreciate your kindness and public recognition. I also want to thank Andy Schwartz of Stylish Detroit for doing an amazing job with all the photos: This issue entailed a lot of work and extra planning, and you totally crushed it.
Our search for the BEST-IN-CLASS 2021 line-up began in December with several calls for nominations, followed by an application deadline in February. As we reviewed the many applications, we took a variety of factors into consideration, including personal character, commitment to professional development, proven success, professional achievement, leadership capability, dedication to clients, and service to the industry and community.
Finally, and most importantly, thank you to each of our BEST-IN-CLASS honorees for participating in this special issue, which I hope transpires into an annual endeavor. Your passion for real estate is remarkable, and your excitement for the future is inspiring. We can’t wait to see you grow and shape your professional paths … and, hopefully, if you’re not there already, join the ranks of Wayne County’s Top 300.
The individuals we selected to stand in this elite class are hustlers and go-getters and innovators. They exhibit honor and humility and empathy and grit. They have unique voices, uplifting spirits, lofty dreams, interesting hobbies and great jokes.

KULACKI Elevating a Passion for Giving Back

making a difference By Robbyn Moore Photos by Jermaine Buie with Perfect Light, LLC Photos taken at Toll Brothers Reserve at West Bloomfield
Baldrick’s Foundation determines the best research to make the greatest impact for children with cancer and takes great care with every donor dollar, keeping the staff small, the expenses low and directing every possible dollar to childhood cancer research. The goal is to one day put a stop to childhood cancer. To raise funds, the organization hosts a series of head-shaving events in and around the community. When Matthew attended his first event, Robb Drzewicki was the Volunteer Event Organizer (VEO). Since then, Robb and Matthew have become great friends, and Matthew has since become Robb’s successor.
Matthew Kulacki firmly believes if you have influence in this world — no matter how big or small — you should use it to do something positive. As a native from the Livonia area — and years as a bartender, real estate agent and philanthropist — Matthew’s sphere of influence reaches a vast, diverse and benevolent audience.
Matthew’s opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of others presented itself five years ago when he was asked to bartend at a St. Baldrick’s Foundation event. Once he saw the impact the organization was having on everyone involved, he knew he had to become a part of it. “As a bartender, I meet so many people from all different walks of life,” Matthew said. “The volunteer groups at St. Baldrick’s are some of those people. Good people.”
“Five years ago, I volunteered at my first event and was hooked,” Matthew recalled. “My participation has grown where I am now in the lead organizer role, overseeing our Metro Detroit chapter.” Matthew said his volunteer work with St. Baldrick’s is fuel for his soul. “As a father, husband and full-time real estate agent, I don’t have an abundance of free time to spread
around,” he explained. “But I know that there are people out there who need help — my help. And in doing so, these events make me feel proud. Actually, they make me feel fantastic! But most of all, I am humbled to be a part of it.” Typically, the foundation sets up a series of satellite events to promote the main event where everyone’s head is shaved. For years, they kick off the event season with a Bloody Mary Contest in January at the Plymouth ROC bar. This was traditionally followed by a Day at the Arcade event in February at the 1up Arcade Bar in Farmington. In April, there is a Bartender Flair Show at Slingers Bar and Grill, which is the precursor to the main event in May. In 2020, however, they had to cancel their third event and postpone the main event until the end of August where they could host a safe and sanitary outdoor event. This year’s event season raised nearly $140,000. While the foundation’s most successful event was in 2017 when they raised $142,000 and shaved over 100 heads, their biggest success was in 2020. “Beyond the impressive funds we raised during a pandemic, we watched volunteers get creative,” Matthew said proudly. “We had virtual live-shave events on Facebook and threw together a safe, sanitary outdoor event in the parking lot at the One Under Craft Bar + Eats. I am most proud of the efforts of everyone this year.”
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer- and donor-powered charity committed to supporting the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and giving survivors long and healthy lives. By working closely with leading pediatric oncologists, the St. realproducersmag.com

“I am extremely proud of my participation in this amazing cause,” Matthew said. “In my first year, I volunteered as a guest bartender and raised $1,000. The following year, I signed up to shave my head and raised $2,500, and this past year, my team raised $19,371. My goal for myself this year is to personally raise $10,000 and $25,000 for my team.”
Real estate is an industry that allows Matthew the flexibility to manage his schedule and time, and therefore, can dedicate an equal balance of time to his clients, the community and other organizations. “I’m so grateful to have the ability to decide how busy I want to be,” he said. “One of my true passions is giving back — that’s why I give a portion of my commissions to charity every year. Additionally, my team’s motto ‘The Group That Gives Back’ is not just something we say: It’s a way of life and how I run my business.”
Matthew’s immediate target for this year’s “Million Dollar March” is to bring their running event total to a million dollars. “Ten years ago, we raised $10,000,” Matthew shared. “Since that time, we have raised just over $800,000. Our hope for this year is to hit that million-dollar mark!”
Matthew hopes to be remembered as “the guy who did all the charity stuff ” while inspiring others to do the same. “Giving back is my passion, and I hope it fuels others to find an organization that they can
As a real estate agent at Keller Williams - Matthew Kulacki Real Estate Group, Matthew receives an outpouring of support from his peers, colleagues and the city of Livonia. “My office engages in all of my wild fundraising ideas,” he said. “This year, our team of agents purchased a large YETI cooler and filled it with bottles of liquor and libations for our annual raffle; we raised almost $3,000.”
be passionate about as well,” he said. “Be a champion of your community, live local and honestly care about your community.” For more information about St. Baldrick’s Foundation, call 888-899-2253 or visit stbaldricks.org.
Matthew’s objective over the next five years is to continue the momentum of raising funds and awareness to fight childhood cancer. “Beyond that, I hope to also find a successor for my VEO position and leave a legacy of caring and kindness,” he said. Matthew also shared that he could not do what he does without the constant support and understanding from his beautiful wife Felicia. They married in May 2019 and recently welcomed their first child Isaac. 16 • June 2021

Age: 32 Number of Years in Real Estate: 3
Why did you decide to get into real estate?
I decided to get into real estate because it seemed like a way in which I could use my skills in sales and communications to provide for my children. I was working hour-for-hour as a massage therapist and quickly realized that trading hours for dollars was not for me. What are you most excited about in your life right now?
I am most excited that my business is taking on a new form that I never saw coming, which has me genuinely eager and thrilled for what my business will look like in the future. What do you do to stay grounded/ centered/sane?
I rely heavily on my mentors and friends who have believed in me. Although my circle is small, I have cultivated a group of people who are a sounding board and a grounding space to help me govern my emotions and sanity. I also like to talk mean shit to my phone when I hang up calls that are annoying as heck. realproducersmag.com
When are you at your best?
After my Starbucks coffee and then again from 8:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Night dweller for life! I also find when I truly believe in something my true inner self comes out, and it’s hard to miss. How did your challenges shape who you are today?
All I know is challenge. All I know is pressure. All I know is chaos. I have grown up and lived in chaotic environments that required me to perform and provide for myself so that I could get what I want and need to survive. I have learned to hone in on what is wildly important in front of me and let everything else fall behind me.

of real-life emotions. Everyone buying or selling a home is experiencing some form of life change and stress from the purchase or sale of what is — most of the time — their largest possession in life. I would say to people that it’s far more than opening doors or endless text messages. Be more than basic. Also, there is no secret sauce to success. It requires very simple tasks all the time with consistency and steadfastness. If you work, it will work.

Age: 25 Number of Years in Real Estate: 5 Why did you decide to get into real estate?
I was always a salesman. From a young age, I raised and sold kittens and cockatiels. As I got older, it evolved into reselling cars, and real estate looked to be the next progressing step. I started real estate on the investment side; however, as I helped friends and family purchase, I realized I enjoyed the sales more than the investments. At that point, I went full-time. What does success mean to you?
Success to me is recognition in the real estate world — being nominated for such awards is the best feeling. On the sales side, success is having the trust of my clients so that they can happily and unhesitatingly refer me to friends and family. What are you most excited about in your life right now?
I am most excited in life to start traveling more. I am reaching a point in my career where I can more successfully balance my work and personal life. I am looking forward to exploring 22 • June 2021

different states, countries and experiences. What do you do to stay grounded/ centered/sane?
Lists and routines. Everything — literally everything — that I plan to do throughout the day is on a list and crossed off as it is done. It keeps me sane and on track throughout the day. My friends call me list-boy! Also, a daily routine for both work and personal life gives me structure. How did your challenges shape who you are today?
My life challenges have always pushed me to want more. February marked five years of remission for me from Leukemia. During that time, it made me realize how short life was and not take anything for granted.
Who has helped you get where you are today?
My parents have been a huge factor in pushing me to where I am today, both in my professional and personal life. Why did you decide to get into real estate?
I wanted something where I was helping people and could have a flexible schedule. Although I am busy, it is a business that is family-oriented and flexible. What does success mean to you?
Success means being able to provide a safe, happy home for my family. Success is helping my clients have the same thing. What are you most excited about in your life right now?
I am most excited about growing my business to help ensure my family is as stable as possible. When are you at your best?
I am at my best when I feel as though my home team — my family — is proud of me. I am at my best when I know exactly where to find the answers. How did your challenges shape who you are today?
My challenges have shaped me to be empathetic to all humans. Perspective is key, and realproducersmag.com
I never have a harsh judgment on anyone. I have also learned that I am a survivor of many hardships, and nothing can keep me down. I can set goals, educate myself and surround myself with successful people to encourage and inspire me to always do better. What drives or motivates you?
I am driven by knowing that every day I can do something to learn more and help someone. I am driven by wanting to know and do more. Who has helped you get where you are today?
So many … my family and friends for rooting me on, my partner, my kids. Shannon Hall, Boyd Rudy and Deanna DuRussel have all helped me in many facets of my life, not just my business. My clients who have trusted and referred me.

My wife and I had just gone through the process of selling and buying a home. As we navigated through the process, I really enjoyed everything about it and learning how things came together. What does success mean to you?
Every time I get a referral from someone, I think of that as success. It means I did a good enough job or they trust me enough to help somebody they know through the process.
where I’m at that year. Up to this point in my career, I’ve improved every year over year, so I know that I am my only competition. People will ask “what’s your secret?” or “how do you do so much business?” But for the elite agents, it’s just what you do. Being Kyle Lang is how I do it. Who has helped you get where you are today?
My wife for sure — she has always been a big supporter of mine. My broker Lisa Hall really treats me like family and has always believed in me. My goal for 2020 was $10 million, and she told me I’d do $12 million. Wouldn’t you know, I finished with just over $12 million. Why did you decide to get into real estate?
One day while I was in my college apartment and trying to decide what I wanted to do after I graduate in a few months, my roommate at the time was watching “Million Dollar Listing New York.” I really fell in love with the lifestyle of the agents on the show and decided I immediately wanted a career in real estate. I signed up for an online real estate course the next day. What do you do to stay grounded/centered/sane?
I wake up early on Saturday mornings to recap my week and write out where I want my life and business to go. This helps me relax and take things one day at a time. How did your challenges shape who you are today?
They showed me that with hard work you can overcome any obstacle. Back in high school, I graduated with a very low GPA, which led to me going to community college. This was mainly because I missed a majority of my senior year by almost going blind in one of my eyes. All of my high school peers laughed at me for going to a community college, but I used this challenge as fuel to get my grades up and eventually transfer to Michigan State University and graduate from the Eli Broad College of Business. realproducersmag.com

This shaped me by demonstrating that by having a goal and a strong work ethic, your life can change for the better in a short period of time. What drives or motivates you?
My youngest sister. I realize that she imitates a lot of decisions that I make in life, and she’s always super happy for my success. A lot of what I do is for her — I want to be an example for her to achieve the goals she has set. Who has helped you get where you are today?
My mom, dad and aunt. Without them, I probably wouldn’t even be a real estate agent — they supported my decision 100%. They also helped me out a lot financially in those first couple of years while I was still trying to figure out how to get clients to pay the bills. I am truly blessed and grateful to have them in my life. As a 2021 Best-in-Class honoree, what are your words of wisdom for the next generation of real estate agents?
The wisdom I would give is for them to really understand that this is truly a communication and networking business. It took me nearly five years to realize this.

I was always someone who struggled in school. I wasn’t passionate about being in a classroom and have always preferred to be out in the real world working with people. I’ve always been a people person, and real estate put me at the center of some of the most important moments in people’s lives. Age: 31 Number of Years in Real Estate: 6 Why did you decide to get into real estate?
The real estate industry has seen very little change over the last 20 years. “Innovation” in real estate is coming out with an electronic lockbox that solves a problem that never really existed. I saw an opportunity to leverage social media and technology in a way that hasn’t been done before and wanted to be the first one to hit the ground running. What does success mean to you?

harder and grow my business, I’m able to provide more opportunities and support to my friends, family and everyone around me in the real estate industry, along with people outside of the industry being aided through our nonprofit. What are you most excited about in your life right now?
I’m extremely excited to see how Social House Group grows over the next two-to-three years. I genuinely think we’re doing something special and something that will change this industry forever. We’re focused on giving each of our agents all of the tools that they need to build a business for themselves rather than simply something that builds up the people at the top. I can’t wait to have more agents join our team and exceed their most ambitious goals without having to work 60+ hours a week. When are you at your best?
While it sounds counterintuitive, I’m at my best when I have way too much on my plate. I thrive under pressure and always welcome new challenges. When I’m not busy or not working 80+ hours in a week, I quickly get bored and fall into a mental slump. As realproducersmag.com
a result, I’m always coming up with new ideas and strategies to innovate both in and out of real estate. Who has helped you get where you are today?
My family has been an incredible motivator, and my friends have always encouraged me to strive for more no matter what level of success I’ve achieved. I wouldn’t be where I’m at without them. Special shoutout to my business partner, Yaz, who has played an integral role in building Social House Group into what it is today. The company wouldn’t exist without her. As a 2021 Best-in-Class honoree, what are your words of wisdom for the next generation of real estate agents?
