Turks and Caicos Islands Hospital (TCIH) is proud to be recognised by the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario for its commitment to advancing evidence-based care and fostering a culture where clinical decisions are guided by the best available research

This recognition marks TCIH’s successful designation as a Best Practice Spotlight Organization® (BPSO®), a global program that supports healthcare institutions in implementing and sustaining evidence-based practices to improve patient outcomes and strengthen health systems

“RNAO is proud to honour Turks and Caicos Islands Hospital and their progress as a Best Practice Spotlight Organization® (BPSO®) The team’s dedication to patient and family-centred care, strengthening safety practices and preventing harm from falls and pressure injuries reflects the tremendous work they’ve done,” said Dr Doris Grinspun, CEO of RNAO “Through staff education, interprofessional collaboration and strong leadership support, TCIH has shown that even smaller health systems can successfully use research to improve everyday care”

TCIH joined the BPSO program in 2021 with the goal of elevating nursing standards and embedding evidencebased practices across the organization In 2025, the hospital achieved full designation after successfully implementing key best practice guidelines in Person and Family-Centred Care, Falls Prevention and Pressure Injury Prevention

As part of this process, RNAO conducted a site visit to assess the hospital’s progress, including its infrastructure, staff engagement and implementation of best practice guidelines The visit also included Best Practice Champions training, equipping staff with tools to lead change and sustain continuous improvement

“The Champions training equipped staff with practical tools to lead and support change as they implement new guidelines,” said Dr Michelle Rey, Director of International Affairs and Best Practice Guidelines Centre at RNAO “I’m pleased with the significant progress TCIH has accomplished over the past few years, including developing comprehensive educational plans, aligning policies with best practices and maintaining strong staff engagement”

Ms Mikette Been, Chief of Clinical Services and BPSO Lead at TCIH, highlighted the significance of the achievement: “As BPSO Lead for the Turks and Caicos Islands Hospitals, I am immensely proud of this achievement and the dedication shown by our entire team in embedding evidence-based practice into everyday care

This recognition reflects not only our commitment to excellence, but also our shared vision of delivering safe, patient and family-centred care across the Turks and Caicos Islands We remain committed to sustaining this momentum and continuing to strengthen outcomes for those we serve”

Dr Denise Brathwaite-Tennant, CEO of Turks and Caicos Islands Hospital, emphasised both the milestone and the broader impact of the partnership:

This milestone comes as TCIH also celebrates 16 years of service to the community, marking over a decade of progress in advancing healthcare delivery across the islands Looking ahead, the hospital will continue its journey of improvement by implementing additional best practice guidelines, including Transitions in Care and Services and Pain: Prevention, Assessment and Management

The Power of Nurses Nurses Week 2026

The Turks and Caicos Islands Hospital, proudly celebrated Nurses Week 2026 from the 6th to the 12th of May, under the inspiring theme, “Power of Nurses,” recognising the invaluable contributions of nurses and midwives across the Turks and Caicos Islands healthcare system

The week-long observance featured a series of activities designed to honour the dedication, compassion, and professionalism of nurses and midwives, who represent the largest segment of the healthcare workforce within the Turks and Caicos Islands Hospital and wider healthcare system

The celebrations commenced with nurses from the Cheshire Hall Medical Centre and Cockburn Town Medical Centre joining colleagues from the Ministry of Health for special church services to officially launch the week's activities Throughout the week, nurses participated in community outreach initiatives, cultural shows, educational engagements, and recognition ceremonies.

Among the highlights were the Nurse of the Year awards, which recognised outstanding excellence in patient care and leadership Mr Jomal Warrick was named Nurse of the Year for Cheshire Hall Medical Centre, while Ms Inette WebsterBrown received the Nurse of the Year award for Cockburn Town Medical Centre This recognition reflects their unwavering dedication, professionalism, compassion, and commitment to delivering exceptional patient care

The celebrations also included tours of the hospital facilities by Premier Hon. Charles Washington Misick, Minister of Health Hon Kyle Knowles, and Permanent Secretary of Health, Mrs Desiree Lewis, who met with nursing teams and expressed appreciation for their continued service and commitment to healthcare delivery

As part of the week's activities, the nursing team produced a special video entitled “A Day in My Shoes,” featuring nurses from across TCI hospital sharing insights into their roles and the impact they make daily in delivering quality patient care and service excellence.

Special celebratory dinners were held in Providenciales and Grand Turk to commemorate the hospital's achievement of becoming an RNAO Best Practice Spotlight Organisation® (BPSO®) designation The events provided an opportunity for nurses and midwives to engage, reflect, and be recognised for their achievements and contributions to advancing evidence-based nursing practices Representatives from the Ministry of Health extended congratulations and appreciation during both events, with remarks delivered by Chief Nursing Officer, Nurse Jackurlyn Sutton and Primary Health Care Manager Ms. Alrisa Gardiner on behalf of the Ministry.

A special edition of TCI Hospital's talk show House Call was also hosted during the week on the topic, “The Evolution of Nursing in the Turks and Caicos Islands” The programme featured Chief Nursing Officer Nurse Jackurlyn Sutton, Chief of Clinical Services, Nurse Mikette Been, and Inpatient Nurse Manager Nurse Jolly Kurien The panel discussed the significant transformation of nursing within the Turks and Caicos Islands and shared their collective vision for advancing the profession through increased local capacity building, specialist nursing development, and stronger partnerships with the Health Professions Authority and the Turks and Caicos Islands Community College.

Chief Nursing Officer Nurse Jackurlyn Sutton also highlighted several significant advancements in the development of nursing within the Turks and Caicos Islands During the House Call discussion, she spoke about the establishment of the first Nursing and Midwifery Council within the Turks and Caicos Islands, noting that prior to its introduction there was no dedicated nursing registration and licensing authority, with oversight previously falling solely under the Health Practitioners Board.

The Power of Nurses

Nurse Sutton further shared that the Turks and Caicos Islands now has a contractual arrangement with the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) to facilitate the delivery of nursing examinations locally, representing another important milestone in strengthening local nursing education and professional certification opportunities The Nursing and Midwifery Council introduced the first Associate Registered Nursing Clinical Examination, which was delivered at the Turks and Caicos Islands Hospital This is a major milestone in strengthening local nursing education and workforce development.

She also emphasised the collective vision to advance from associate registered nurses to specialist nurses while simultaneously upskilling existing nursing leaders within the Turks and Caicos Islands to function as nursing tutors and advanced practice nurses These nursing professionals would not only strengthen clinical leadership across the healthcare system but also support the continued growth and development of the nursing programme at the Turks and Caicos Islands Community College These initiatives are aimed at addressing the increasing demand for specialist nurses locally while advancing a sustainable, high-quality, and best practice approach to nursing education and workforce development within the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Chief of Clinical Services Ms Mikette Been praised the dedication of the nursing teams and reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to supporting professional growth within the sector

Chief Executive Officer Dr Denise Braithwaite-Tennant also commended the nursing teams for their unwavering service and contributions to healthcare excellence

On 10 April 2026, Turks and Caicos Islands Hospital (TCIH), operated by InterHealth Canada, celebrated 16 years of delivering high-quality, evidence-based care. This milestone underscores the hospital's success in transforming healthcare through a public-private partnership model established in 2008 with the Government of Turks and Caicos and InterHealth Canada Limited The partnership modernised healthcare facilities and improved access to international standards of care

TCIH, comprising Cheshire Hall and Cockburn Town Medical Centres, emphasise quality and patient safety, earning international accreditation and recognition for clinical excellence. It has maintained the highest accreditation level from Accreditation Canada since 2012, showcasing its commitment to rigorous global standards.

The hospital is a hub for education and workforce development, offering accredited training programmes and partnerships with educational institutions to enhance local healthcare capacity In 2026, TCIH was designated a Best Practice Spotlight Organisation®, integrating evidence-based guidelines to improve care outcomes

Leadership in surgical safety is demonstrated by the AORN Go Clear™ Award in 2020, recognising TCIH's commitment to smoke-free surgical environments and international best practices The hospital also invests in the next generation of healthcare professionals through its READY Programme and Clinical Observership Programme, nurturing local talent

With rising demand due to population growth and increased visitor numbers, TCIH faces capacity challenges, particularly in inpatient, emergency, and outpatient services. Education, Outreach, and Innovation

In celebration of this year’s Lab Week theme, “Lab Story – To Infinity and Beyond for Our Patients,” Turks and Caicos Islands Hospital Laboratory Department hosted a dynamic series of educational, engaging, and community-focused activities. The initiative highlighted the critical role laboratory professionals play in delivering accurate diagnostics and high-quality patient care.

A central feature of the week was a Continuing Medical Education (CME) session on Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) stool antigen testing, presented by Winsome Haylee-Parker. The session provided valuable insights into the diagnostic significance, methodology, and clinical application of this non-invasive test, reinforcing the laboratory’s commitment to precision and patient-centred care

As part of its outreach efforts, the department welcomed a science class from Holy Family Academy for an immersive laboratory tour Students experienced first-hand the journey of patient samples, from collection to analysis, while gaining a deeper appreciation of the laboratory’s integral role in healthcare delivery

During the visit, students were introduced to essential laboratory processes, including specimen reception and labelling, centrifugation, slide preparation, and microscopic examination They also observed key equipment such as microscopes, pipettes, centrifuges, and automated analysers used in haematology and clinical chemistry testing Safety remained a key focus, with demonstrations of proper personal protective equipment (PPE), infection control protocols, and quality assurance practices that ensure reliable and timely results

Laboratory staff delivered engaging, age-appropriate explanations, helping to inspire interest in science and healthcare careers while emphasising teamwork, accuracy, and professionalism.

This year’s Lab Week activities highlighted the hospital’s ongoing dedication to excellence, innovation, and public engagement. The theme, “To Infinity and Beyond for Our Patients,” captured a shared commitment to exceeding expectations and advancing healthcare through reliable diagnostics and compassionate service.

HOSPITAL DEPARTMENTS COLLABORATE TO SUPPORT A. LOUISE GARLAND THOMAS HIGH SCHOOL CAREER DAY

On Friday, 1 May, several departments from TCI Hospital collaborated to participate in A. Louise Garland Thomas High School’s Career Day Led by the Human Resources Manager, Lorenzo Seymour, teams from Human Resources, Nursing, Infection Control, Pharmacy, and Medicine, supported by the Public Relations and Admin Support team, interacted with students about career pathways, workplace skills, and the importance of education in crafting future opportunities Students from other government and private high schools were also in attendance, allowing the team’s effort to have a further reach

The teams conducted engaging demonstrations, sparking an early interest in various hospital professions.

The day brimmed with enthusiasm and curiosity as students eagerly explored the myriad of possibilities their futures might hold This dialogue was not only informative but also inspired students to reflect on their interests and how these could align with a career in healthcare.

The success of the Career Day event was clear from the students’ excitement and the insightful questions they raised It underscored the crucial role education and mentorship play in empowering young minds

IHC STAFF ATTEND “NIGHT FOR THE FIGHT”

InterHealth Canada - Turks and Caicos Islands Hospital lent their support to a number of key community initiatives throughout the quarter A standout event was the National Cancer Society’s “Night for the Fight” which brought community members together for an inspiring evening dedicated to raising awareness and funds for cancer patient support

The event featured heartfelt stories from survivors and a four lap walk around the National Stadium’s 400m Track in honour of cancer survivors, cancer patients, caregivers of cancer patients and those who have lost their lives to cancer The night also featured an array of performances by local artists that uplifted spirits and fostered a sense of unity

TCI HOSPITAL STANDS WITH ROYAL TCI POLICE FORCE AGAINST CHILD ABUSE

A team from Turks and Caicos Islands Hospital attended the Safeguarding and Public Protection Unit of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force’s Fun Day on Friday, 24 April 2026, at the Ethel Ingham Centre The event brought together students, teachers, and key stakeholders to observe Child Abuse Awareness Month

Activities included a march against child abuse, reinforcing the national message of protection and advocacy for children, and a ceremony featuring an engaging and educational skit performed by officers of the Safeguarding and Public Protection Unit, highlighting the realities of abuse and the importance of speaking out

Children were encouraged to recognise the signs of abuse and to speak up, reinforcing the message that safeguarding is a shared responsibility

On 26th and 28th May, Turks and Caicos Islands Hospitals hosted their annual Heart of Healthcare Award Ceremony at the Cockburn Town Medical Centre and Cheshire Hall Medical Centre respectively. This special event recognised team members who consistently go above and beyond in caring for our patients, supporting one another, and embodying the values that define the organisation’s mission

Our Heart of Champion honourees demonstrate compassion, excellence, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference every day Their dedication inspires those around them and strengthens the exceptional care we provide to our communities.

Speaking at the events, CEO Dr. Denise Braithwaite-Tennant delivered a compelling address titled “Strategic Transformation”. She highlighted the importance of adaptability and innovation in healthcare, emphasising how these elements are crucial in navigating the challenges faced by medical professionals today. Dr. Braithwaite-Tennant commended the awardees for their remarkable contributions, noting that their efforts not only enhance patient care but also foster a culture of resilience and growth within the organisation.

Annual S.N.A.P. Centre Sports Day Celebrates Inclusivity and Achievement

The S N A P Centre held its 4th Annual Sports Day on Friday, 29 May 2026, marking a significant event that highlights TCI Hospitals’ dedication to education, empowerment and inclusivity As sponsors, TCI Hospital played a vital role in supporting the S.N.A.P. Centre's management to ensure a day filled with enjoyment and positive impact for all attendees.

The event featured a range of activities tailored to accommodate various abilities, promoting a sense of inclusivity and accomplishment. Participants competed in traditional races, including the egg and spoon race, sack race, and potato race Other activities included ball blowing, colour sorting, balloon cup blowing and more

Hospital staff members were on hand to offer support and encouragement, ensuring that every participant had the chance to shine and feel appreciated Their efforts contributed to an uplifting atmosphere throughout the day.

The event was a celebration of joy and camaraderie within the S.N.A.P. community. It acknowledged and applauded the achievements of the students, embodying the true spirit of sportsmanship and community.

Human Resources Department attends Shining Stars Preparatory School Career Expo

The Shining Stars Preparatory School held its annual Careers Expo on Friday, 29th May, offering students in grades K-6 the chance to engage with professionals from various industries TCI Hospital participated in the event, providing students with valuable insights into healthcare professions

Lorenzo Seymour, TCIH Human Resources Manager, commented on the event: “It was a fantastic opportunity for us to connect with the future generation and inspire them to consider careers in healthcare. We were impressed by the curiosity and enthusiasm of the students, who asked insightful questions and showed a genuine interest in learning more about the medical field.”

He further elaborated, “Events like these are crucial for broadening young minds and helping them envisage a wide range of career possibilities. We believe that by exposing students to different professions at a young age, we can ignite passions and interests that may guide their future educational and career choices”

Careers expositions are vital for schools as they provide students with a glimpse into the multitude of career paths available. These events bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world applications, allowing children to see how their studies relate to various professional fields.

Deputy Governor’s 5K Walk/Run

TCI Hospital was proud to support the Deputy Governor’s 5K Walk/Run on Saturday, 6 June 2026 As a Bronze Sponsor, TCI Hospital supported all three of the charities in whose honour the race was held. Those charities were the National Cancer Society, United Way and Ashley’s Learning Centre.

Demonstrating its commitment to community health and wellness, TCI Hospital's staff eagerly participated in the race. Their enthusiasm and dedication underscored the hospital's ongoing efforts to promote active lifestyles and community involvement.

Staff from the Medical and Nursing teams also supported the event by offering free blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol screening. Participants were grateful for these services, which not only provided valuable health insights but also highlighted the hospital’s proactive approach to preventive care.

TCI Hospital Awards Top Science Students Nationwide

Interhealth Canada - Turks and Caicos Islands Hospital has once again demonstrated its commitment to education by continuing its support for high school graduations as the season kicked off in June 2026 The hospital, known for fostering educational growth among youth in the community, has consistently contributed to graduation ceremonies across the Turks and Caicos Islands.

In recognition of outstanding academic achievement in science, the top science student from each government high school received a crystal award and a cash donation. Additionally, students from four private high schools were also honoured with crystal awards.

IHC Top Science Awardees are also encouraged to apply for the hospital’s 2026 “Ready Programme,” where students from 3rd to 5th form can explore the hospital’s clinical operations through a two-week internship This exposure not only enhances their understanding but also inspires potential future careers in healthcare.

The hospital’s involvement in these initiatives highlights its dedication to both healthcare excellence and the empowerment of future generations As graduation season unfolds, the partnership between Interhealth Canada TCI Hospital and local schools exemplifies the enduring support and investment in the community's future leaders.

The annual Easter Egg Hunt took place on Friday, 3 April, transforming the healing garden grounds into a vibrant and lively setting The atmosphere was filled with joy and enthusiasm as children eagerly searched for the colourful eggs hidden among the greens Amidst the excitement, the highlight of the event was the appearance of the Easter Bunny, delighting both young and old alike
