Preface
How to Use This Manual Preparing for a course can often be the most daunting part of teaching it! The Instructor Resource and Support Manual to accompany the fourteenth edition of Health: The Basics was designed to aid personal health and wellness instructors to prepare lectures, activities, and syllabi. It is especially helpful for teachers who are preparing and creating their personal health and wellness lecture materials for the first time. Each section of the manual offers advice and instruction on how to: • organize the content throughout the course, • prepare clear and informative materials in the least amount of time, and • provide the best interactive learning experience for your students. The chapter outlines in Part 1 will help you easily incorporate key terms, discussion questions, critical thinking questions, student activities, PowerPoint lecture slides, ABC News video clips, and images and tables from the text. Chapter outlines are broken into the following parts to allow for easy accessibility and quick reference to all the available student and instructor resources.
Overview The overview provides background information pertinent to a topic in the chapter or suggestions for what to pay particular attention to during the course of instruction of the chapter.
Learning Outcomes The learning outcomes list the key concepts students should understand as they reach the conclusion of each chapter. These outcomes can be helpful in organizing lesson plans or lectures and come directly from the main text.
Lecture Outline The outlines for each chapter are helpful in formulating and structuring lectures.
Discussion Questions The discussion questions are presented to help students understand the material conceptually. The questions integrate the information presented in the text with real life to facilitate better understanding.
