TFCU Donates To Stony Brook Village’s Meal Program One of the largest credit unions in the U.S. is giving a philanthropic effort a financial boost. Teachers Federal Credit Union recently donated $5,000 to the Stony Brook Village/ Stony Brook University Hospital Health Care Meal Program, according to a press release from the Ward Melville Heritage Organization. Inna Sprague, TFCU chief experience officer, and Suresh Renganathan, TFCU chief technology officer, presented the donation to Richard Rugen, WMHO chairman, and
Gloria Rocchio, WMHO president. The program benefits local nurses, doctors and health care personnel on the front lines of the COVID-19 outbreak. Brad Calhoun, TFCU president and CEO, said the foundation of the credit union is its communities.“During these unprecedented times, our organization is channeling our passion for the communities we serve by supporting our health care professionals on the front lines of COVID-19 and the local small businesses that have been financially impacted,” he said.
TFCU has donated more than $25,000 to Suffolk County downtown districts in an effort to keep the local economy in motion and support local health care workers, according to the press release. “This example of coming together in a time of crisis and giving freely of yourself is the true definition of community,” Rocchio said. “We thank Teachers Federal Credit Union for coming forward with their contribution to this important program.”

Obituary Carl E. Hanes
Carl E. Hanes Jr., of Setauket, died April 2 at the age of 80. Born July 10, 1939, he lived a full and rewarding life with a positive attitude and sense of humor. Carl was happily married to his wife Constance for 58 years. He had four children, Daniel, Melanie, Mary and Amie; and two grandchildren Madilyn and Mia. Born in Akron, Ohio, Carl was a graduate of Ohio University and went on to work in finance at Firestone Tire and Rubber Company before accepting a position as chief accountant at the University of Michigan. In 1970, Carl, Connie and family moved to Long Island where he was the vice president of Finance and Management at SUNY Stony Brook for 36 years, under three separate presidents. He was instrumental in the building of Stony Brook University Hospital, two local Long Island hi-tech incubators, and the Stony Brook Child Care Center. He was also a past president of the National Association of College and University Business Officers. Carl was a committed community member serving on a variety of boards of directors including the St. Charles Hospital Foundation and Boy Scouts of America

The civic association sent an email April 10 to inform members that the group established a Helping Hands program with the aim to deliver up to $100 groceries per week to anyone who needs them. Those who are unable to leave the house because they may be infected, are one of the people at high risk or are having financial difficulties as a result of the pandemic, can reach out to the civic association for help. Volunteers will shop, pay for and deliver the groceries.

Residents who receive assistance are asked to contribute to the program if they can do so. TVCA President Jonathan Kornreich said more than a dozen people asked for assistance during the first week of the program. He said that more than 20 people have offered to volunteer to help. “The community is so amazing and ready to help,” Kornreich said, adding that local residents have sent in donations totaling $2,500 so far. SBU Conducting Study to Find Cure for COVID-19 Patients Centerport Resident Among First to Donate Convalescent Blood Plasma BY RITA J. EGAN RITA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Stony Brook Medicine has launched a research study in the hopes of developing a treatment for those severely suffering from the coronavirus. On April 2, SBM began a U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved research study to determine if convalescent blood plasma from those who’ve recovered from COVID-19 can help treat currently hospitalized patients. One of the first volunteers was Mark Goidell, a litigation attorney from Centerport.
The Research Study
Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero, vice chair of Clinical Research and Innovation in the Renaissance School of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology, is heading up the research study. He said the hospital needs approximately 100 volunteers who have recovered from the coronavirus to donate blood plasma, possibly once a week or every other week. Subjects must have contracted COVID-19 and be free of symptoms for 14 days. As of April 22, the doctor said they have received a large number of inquiries leading to 180 people being screened and 90 have been identified as having high levels of antibodies. Currently 25 have either donated blood plasma or are scheduled to do so. Bennett-Guerrero said researchers are looking for those with high antibody levels of the virus and testing takes about 15 minutes. The donors must also meet regular criteria to be a blood donor, the doctor said, which includes being at least 17 years old, weighing more than 100 pounds, and having no infections Certain
travel outside of the U.S. will also be reviewed. “We’re very fortunate that we can run this protocol independently, because we have access to a very good test for antibodies, and we also have a licensed blood collection facility already in our hospital,” the doctor said. “So we have those two main ingredients to help us to collect blood plasma and unfortunately have a large number of patients who are in desperate need of help.” Bennett-Guerrero said the trial will include 500 hospital patients ranging from those who are intubated and those who are not. A higher percentage of patients will receive convalescent serum on a random basis compared to other trials which tend to have 50 percent of patients serve as a control group who receive a placebo. “Our protocol is unique in that while we want to help as many people as possible, we also want to determine if it’s safe and effective,” the doctor said. “It’s a randomized trial where 80 percent of the patients will receive the convalescent plasma because we hope to benefit as many patients as possible, and there will be a small group of 20 percent of patients that will serve as the control group and get standard plasma. It’s the only way we can rigorously determine if it’s safe and effective to do this.” Plasma, which is the liquid portion of the blood, helps with clotting and supporting immunity. The hope is the plasma from those who have survived COVID-19 will contain antibodies which in turn can kill the virus in seriously ill patients. According to SBM, convalescent serum therapy is a centuryold treatment that has been used in patients during the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918, the diphtheria epidemic in the U.S. in the 1920s, and more recently, the Ebola outbreak in 2014. The doctor said it’s too early to determine if giving convalescent blood plasma to a COVID-19 patient will help. “It’s very early in the stage with this pandemic,” he said. “We’re only beginning to learn what are the patterns of antibody formation in people who had the COVID-19 infection. In general it’s believed that antibodies to COVID-19 will probably persist for a while, perhaps months or years, and likely be protective. However, we don’t know yet if the antibodies that we are measuring actually mean, ‘quote-unquote,’ one is immune and can’t be reinfected. We think that’s probably the case but it’s not proven yet.”

donation criteria. Both Goidell, 64, and his wife Lynn, 62, came down with the virus. The attorney said he was sick toward the end of February and in early March, and his symptoms included being lethargic and feverish, and at times during the night he would frequently wake up and try to catch his breath, many times going outside to do so. His wife was admitted to Huntington Hospital March 13 due to having double pneumonia and was discharged a few days later. Goidell said he did have a relapse where he said his symptoms felt like a sinus infection, with a loss of smell and taste. He said he has recovered about 70 percent of those senses. While his symptoms didn’t initially lead to testing, he said, once his wife was hospitalized he was tested March 17 at an urgent care facility. After reading about the Stony Brook study on the News12 website, Goidell said he was more than willing to participate in the trial. “It’s heartbreaking to see what’s happening and all the tragedy and anguish that is being brought about by the virus,” Goidell said. “I’m grateful for the fact that I’ve recovered, and I’m able to do something to help.” He said he feels fortunate to live in close proximity to Stony Brook Medicine. Between his experience with the study so far and his
wife’s hospital stay at Huntington Hospital, he has gained an even greater respect and admiration for health care workers. He called those who treated his wife “heroes.” He added the two of them are now back to working remotely, joking that he has put on some weight due to his wife’s good cooking, and he has been playing a lot of basketball in his driveway to burn off the pounds. He said he hopes that others who have recovered will donate their plasma, and that others will “stay inside and help each other out.” “I wish Dr. Bennett-Guerrero and the researchers at Stony Brook the best of luck, and I have the most gratitude for the work they are doing,” he said. People who have recovered from COVID-19 and want to donate blood plasma can visit www.stonybrookmedicine.edu/ COVID_donateplasma where they will be required to fill out an online survey. Potentially eligible people will be asked to participate in a screening visit at a Stony Brook Medicine facility, which will take approximately 30 minutes. You do not need to be a Stony Brook University Hospital patient to participate, but you must meet the required criteria for plasma donation and have high levels of antibodies to the virus that causes COVID-19.

Editorial Letters to the Editor Reimagining a Brittle Society Chamber Asks for COVID-19 Changes in Insurance
Of all the things that have come undone since the start of the pandemic, one of the worst has been the loss of confidence in the systems that have governed us for so long. Our local businesses are experiencing untold hardship. People are suffering at home, furloughed or dismissed from their jobs, and many are having a hard time paying the bills or buying food. Beyond all that, people are dying. The most vulnerable —the old and those with underlying medical issues — have been the ones most harmed by the pandemic. We’ve had a long time to come to terms with the issues in our society, but what the coronavirus has made clear is the brittleness of so many of our institutions. There has been more than one report about how the federal government failed to follow the pandemic response playbook present in prior administrations, and how the U.S., in a bid to tighten the financial belt, eliminated people in government whose job was to identify and mitigate such large-scale viral disasters. We do not know how the end of this virus will play out. Doctors have said the only way for us to truly break away from the restrictions placed on us by SARS Cov-2 is to either develop a vaccine or have widespread, unprecedented testing of practically every U.S. citizen. States like New York have called for such tests, but the federal government has not yet hinted at doing anything close to what would be needed. What is needed, as Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) said so succinctly in his April 20 address, is less a reopening, but a reimagining of our systems. “Let’s use this crisis, this situation, this time to actually learn the lessons … let’s reimagine what we want society to be,” Cuomo said. The governor cited things like the public transportation system, which has for so long been a bane of so many commuters. The Long Island Rail Road has seen a near 95 percent loss in ridership and now faces real financial collapse. With that in mind, flip that picture, and imagine a service that is both fast and efficient in the vein of Tokyo’s or Seoul’s public transportation system. Imagine rent prices not being upwards of $1,500 for a studio apartment. Imagine housing prices that don’t restrict all but the middle to upper class affording a home on Long Island. Imagine young people not being pushed off the Island because of its general unaffordability. This is what happens during a crisis. We see the things that have exacerbated the pandemic, namely a health care system that is simply not built to give the greatest amount of help to the greatest number of people. We witness the outsized unfairness that large businesses with thousands of employees nationwide somehow are allowed to apply for loans designated for small businesses. The Washington Post reported close to 70 large companies applied for and got loans through the payment protection program. While a company like Shake Shack actually returned the $10 million small business loan it received, the fact there were many thousands of businesses that could not get a dime despite applying as soon as they were able shows how high current processes are stacked against them. We can do better, and if we can build upon the lessons made only more apparent during our time in isolation, we will be safer and prepared for a better world. Letters … We welcome your letters. Dear Gov. Cuomo, On behalf of the members of the Three Village Chamber of Commerce, we urge you to address the issue of insurance coverage for COVID-19 related loss and damage in commercial business insurance policies. Over the past several years the insurance industry has been stressed by covering loss sustained in floods, hurricanes, tornados, forest fires and the SARS epidemic. Thankfully until now business insurance coverage for both physical loss and damage and business interruption losses have been covered. The premium business owners pay year after year served the intended purpose, to protect the financial interests of policyholders. As you well know, an insurance policy is a contract between the insured and the insurer that clearly spells
out the perils which trigger coverage and the exclusion from coverage. In recent years, because of severe losses, insurers have added exclusions to their policies, slowly diminishing the very purpose of insurance. Our concern at this time is the exclusion of a virus or a bacteria incident and the exclusion from business interruption coverage if the loss is not the result of a physical loss or damage to the insured property. These exclusions from coverage, in the case of business losses sustained as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, should not apply if the insured’s loss of business is directly caused by the pandemic and/or the governmentally ordered shutdown. Insurers must be required to find coverage for business losses in
their policies and the government must take responsibility to enforce that the coverage is granted. Small business owners will need these funds to start their businesses again; restaurants will need to purchase inventory, clean all equipment, and retailers who missed a season will have to drastically mark down goods and buy new inventory and so much more. Having business interruption coverage to cover some of the monetary losses is crucial for a successful restart of our economy. Zeldin and Bellone as Bipartisan Partners
Daniel Dunaief’s April article highlighting the bipartisan cooperation between Republican Congressman Lee Zeldin (RNY1), and Democrat Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D), was a much appreciated breath of fresh air. The speed with which these two elected public officials, working across the aisle, attended to the needs of their community was remarkable. On the first weekend in April, the congressman received an urgent message from Mr. Bellone saying the county’s stockpile was out of, among other things surgical, and N95 masks. Upon receiving that information Mr. Zeldin put out a tweet asking for help. Almost immediately President Donald Trump’s
(R) son-in-law Jared Kusher reached out, and Executive Bellone was able to buy 150,000 surgical masks. They were delivered the following day. Coincidently, on that same Sunday, the president promised a shipment of 200,000 critical N95 masks from the federal government. As Congressman Zeldin said, “For the N95 masks to come without a charge helps all of those local entities laying out a lot of cash at the moment.” In his April 6 column, Mr. Dunaief pointed out Zeldin was continuing his search for additional equipment. His pursuit has paid quick and very significant dividends. By the middle of that week Suffolk had over 250,000 N95 masks,
with an additional 100,000 of those going to Northwell Hospitals located west of us. It was a much larger number than the administration promised. By the end of this past week another 40,000 N95 masks were received. Three quarters came from the federal stockpile, and 10,000 from the wonderful Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation. GOP Congressman Zeldin, using his influence at the federal level to quickly aid Executive Bellone (D), shows what can happen when two men, from rival political parties work together to save lives in a time of crisis. Meals on Wheels Adapts During Pandemic
As a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and also a board member, I am familiar with how grateful our recipients are for the meals we deliver. For some of our clients, we are the only contact they have each day. Our visits and our meals are the highlight of their day. Of course, lately we have had some real challenges to our meal delivery service. Like everyone, we had to decide whether to continue delivery of the meals and if so, how to do so safely. After much consultation, the board members and the president of our Meals on Wheels program decided to continue
delivery, however we did face some obstacles. Some of our volunteers decided to “take a break” from delivering meals so we had to get creative to keep the meals going. Typically, we send volunteers out in pairs. For now, only one volunteer is doing the delivery and many of our volunteers have offered to deliver as often as necessary.. The administrators in our Meals on Wheels office and our president have worked around the clock making provisions to keep the meal delivery continuous and safe. New measures have been implemented for the volunteers
when delivering the meals to endure safe distancing practices are in effect during the transmission of the meals. The hospital staff at St. Charles and Mather have continued to work with us, making new provisions to ensure the meals they provide are safe for our clients. Taking these measures has kept this essential and important program in place. We hope to return to our normal meals and delivery systems as soon as the pandemic is over and we can do so safely. Observations From the Dog Twilight Zone
I
’m the dog that lives in a house with these four people who never leave. I think I may have entered the dog Twilight Zone. First, there’s this guy who loves to pick me up. It’s crazy, because I’m about 90 pounds, but he says he’s getting exercise. I don’t mind too much, but it does feel weird being up as high as the cats get when they jump to get away from me. Then, there’s this D. None smaller girl who is of the above his sister. She speaks BY DANIEL DUNAIEF to me once a day in a
high squeaky voice and pats my head. I wag my tail to encourage her, but she has too many other things to do, much of which involve the phone in her hand. Then there’s “Mom,” who is a self-described cat person. She doesn’t like the way I smell and I’m always in her way. Still, she gives me food once in a while and she tells everyone else to leave me alone and let me go to sleep. The girl and boy stay up way after mom and dad and they sometimes want to play when I would prefer to dream about this old dog who lives next door. Finally, there’s the one they call “Dad.” He takes me on most of my walks. Sometimes, he puts these white things in his ears and talks to people who aren’t there. He doesn’t always pay close attention to me when he’s got those things in his head, so I get more time to sniff the high traffic areas where other dogs leave their scents.
My daily routine has changed considerably. For starters, walks are both better and worse. They are better because I can go further and I see more people. I am what you might call a “people dog.” But here’s where things get weird. As soon as people get almost close enough to pat my head, either Dad takes me across the street or the other people walk away from me. I’ve tried everything. I lay down and put my head between my paws. That’s a classic, nonthreatening pose. People sometimes slow down when they see that one and they make happy noises, but they rarely stop and they never pat my head. I also stop and wag my tail with my ears up. Again, it’s Dog Tricks 101, but it doesn’t seem to be working. Sometimes they smile at me, although, more often than not, they seem to be holding their breath when Dad and I walk by. Maybe Dad has been eating too many onions
again and he has bad people breath. Nobody walks in the door and announces they are home anymore. They’re here almost all the time. They used to be happy when I barked at people who walked past the house or who came to the door. Now, they scream about how I have “perfect timing” and how they’re on a “work call” and they need me to “keep quiet.” I am just doing what generations of dogs have done since the beginning of that whole wolf-dog transformation. I’m protecting the house. How am I supposed to know that it’s “just a stroller” or that I’m going to “make that little kid fall off his bike?” I’m definitely in the dog Twilight Zone these days, waiting for people to pet me again and waiting for the four people who never leave to start appreciating all the little things I do again, like protecting the house.
There is (Almost) Always Another Way

f presented with a decision you do not wish to make, especially if told you have no choice, don’t do it. Don’t accept the unacceptable because you are told there is no other way to go. There is (almost) always another way. I will share with you a true story that recently happened to make my point. It may seem like the telling of a miracle. A man I know, who lives many hundreds of miles away, was having Between abdominal pain and his abdomen you and me was somewhat BY LEAH S. DUNAIEF distended, so he made an appointment and went to see his primary care physician. The
doctor palpated his distressed area, front and back, and sent him for imaging tests. Of particular concern was the fact that the patient had come into this world with only one kidney. When the results came back, the prognosis wasn’t good. He was sent by his doctor to an oncologist. At this next appointment the grim news was confirmed. He had a cancerous tumor on the kidney, and the organ would have to be removed. That meant he was fated to be on dialysis the rest of his life. The oncologist then sent the patient along to an oncology team that specialized in cancerous kidney surgery in a big city hospital. The appointment was for four days later, and while he waited, the man did extensive research on the internet, learning everything he could about cancer of the kidney. At that next visit, the diagnosis was repeated and the team urged what they believed to be the inevitable: arrange to have the stricken kidney removed. Three doctor appointments, and at all three, there was agreement as to the diagnosis and treatment. Realizing that he was about to have his life altered, and determined to make one

more try at changing the outcome, he returned to the internet. One physician in particular, the renal department chairman of a research hospital, had been impressively profiled. The hospital was in a different part of the country, and COVID-19 was beginning to close down most airline flights. With little expectation of actually being seen by this specialist, and while he was worried about how he might get there and return, he nonetheless picked up the phone and called the department. He was given an appointment almost immediately. He almost didn’t accept it when he was told that he couldn’t bring his test results with him, that those tests would have to be done all over again. But in the end, he went. It took three flights before he reached his destination, and together with his family, he checked into the hotel opposite the hospital, as he had been instructed to do. For the next two days, there were extensive tests, and then the chairman told him the conclusion: the chances were 95 percent that they could save his kidney. He wheeled around and hugged the doctor.

Three days after the surgery, which involved a technique called modelling accompanied by 3500 pictures of the diseased kidney, he walked out of the hospital, holding his family tightly around him. The doctors told him the wondrous news. He was cancer free. The tumor had not yet begun to spread. He had found the right person to deal with his problem because he refused to accept the original path laid out before him, even though he had been told there was no choice. He was determined to find another way, creative in his casting about for an alternative and tenacious enough to transcend the obstacles on his way to a successful outcome. I have known this story for more than a month, thrilled by its outcome yet not wanting to invade the privacy of the principals. So I have not identified any of the people or institutions involved. But I believe it is an experience that must be told to be of possible help for others. And the choices one is presented with don’t have to be life threatening. They can just be part of daily life. The moral is still the same.
